The best thing about Carlene Thompson's excellent psychological thriller isn't the carefully restrained writing or the credible characters. It's the way she can take one of the exhausted cliches of the genre--"Did I Marry a Serial Killer?"--and make it dance. When Deborah Robinson's handsome, overworked lawyer husband Steve suddenly disappears, she begins to wonder about his recent odd behavior and his possible involvement in a series of brutal attacks on local women. Deborah starts to dig, and she soon turns up enough scary stuff about Steve to keep you guessing and feverishly turning pages until the surprising conclusion.
Book Description
For Better...
Deborah Robinson lived on a quiet street in a small town with her handsome husband and darling twins. It was the picture-perfect life---until the day Deborah's husband vanished without a trace.
Or For Worse...
Before he disappeared, Steve had been on edge. When he told her he was distracted by work, Deborah is scared. She's heard about the sadistic murders of several local women, and she can't shake the horrible feeling that the killings are somehow connected to Steve's disappearance.
Until Death Do Us Part...
Torn by guilt, tormented by suspiciou, Deborah begins to delve into the shadowy secrets of her husband's past. What she finds will chill her to the bone. Dor Deborah no longer knows who or what her husband was. But she does know that someone is watching the Robinson house, someone who has ruthlessly killed---and is only waiting for the perfect moment to stike again...

I always like to order from Amazon.com. I have never had a problem of any kind with Amazon or the sellers. The packages are always in good condition and arrive in a timely fashion. This order was no exception. Everything was great! Vicky McCollum
Thompson is becoming one of my favorite authors!.......2006-01-03
This is the 5th book I've read by Thompson and it was great. I was surprised by the ending, and although the characters were without real depth, the plot and suspense make up for it. Also good by Thompson-In the Event of My Death, Black for Remembrance, If She Should Die, and Since You've Been Gone.
Awsome Writer.......2005-02-23
The first book I read of Carlene Thompson was "The Way You Look Tonight" and I was immediately hooked, I went to a used bookstore to find a couple of her books that were out of print and bought all the rest new. I am waiting for her next one. Her books are the only one's I have to pre-order. The only problem I have with her books is I loose a lot of sleep (I cannot put them down once I start).
Great.......2004-07-01
All of her books are great. One of the best things about her books,is that they are losely set in real towns.
who hasn't read all her books.......2003-06-25
this book was a 5 +, but then all her books are. i've read them all and even the very first one was great and can't wait for black moon to get on the shelves. i wish she would write 3 or 4 a year. thanks carlene (i feel like we're on a first name basis) :-)

A selection of recent poems by a poet of whom James Schuyler wrote: "Wit is never distant from the scenes he invents, a metaphysical wit suggestive of Marvell, and one that is not satirical but informed with pity. Book Description
Then he walked in the door...
A "do-gooder with a bad-girl streak," Jorie Morrison is devoted to her music, her work with underprivileged kids, and her cousin, Lily. So when her cousin returns from Europe with a wealthy fiancÉ in tow, Jorie's ready to take a good, hard look at her intended -- but she's totally unprepared for his dark, attractive former guardian.
A prominent litigator, Simon Grant is stuffy, serious -- and seriously "corporate" -- definitely not freewheeling Jorie's type. So why does her pulse jump whenever he's around?
This beautiful unconventional woman may be an ally in Simon's quest to prevent the impetuous young James from making a major mistake. But though Jorie's incredibly alluring, she's reckless and unpredictable -- with a deep inner passion Simon finds somewhat unnerving. If he's not careful, she'll have him feeling things he locked away inside himself long ago.
But Lily and James know a budding romance when they see it -- and they'll do everything they can to help "fire" and "ice" mix to create something wondrous.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent!!!.......2004-10-07
When I first began to read this book, I didn't think I was going to like it. How wrong I was! The more I read, the more I liked. Simon and Jorie are terrific together. It would have been nice to have other characters fleshed out a bit more. But there is only so much space in a book and I'd rather have devoted to the h/h relationship.
A lovely book to read by the fire or at the beach.
Great book.......2003-03-27
Simon Grant has been James Wells guardian since James was fifteen. Even though James is now twenty-two, Simon is still very involved in James' life and cares deeply for him so when James gets engaged to a young woman he barely knows, Simon will do anything to protect him.
Jorie Morrison moved in with her aunt and uncle when her cousin Lily was just a baby. Jorie had an influential role in raising Lily and the two are closer than sisters. Jorie knows that Lily is deeply in love with James but she is a little afraid that James will take her place in Lily's heart.
As Simon and Jorie spend time together, Simon begins to fall for Jorie. As he investigates Lily further, he soon realizes that Lily and James are truly in love but he is concerned that someone close to Lily is trying to ruin James' company.
This book had very likable characters and a good story line. There is one scene in particular where Jorie's eight year old piano student Darius is giving Simon tips on how to attract a woman that is riotous.
delightful contemporary romance.......2003-03-01
In Boston, Jorie Morrison and Simon Grant react differently towards the announced engagement between their respective younger charges Lily Benton and James Wells though they feel the same about the upcoming marriage. Simon respects a vow he made to James' deceased dad to protect his son, the heir to Wells Enterprise and demands a prenuptial agreement that alienates the two folks in love. Jorie wisely holds her council though she believes things have happened too fast.
Simon blackmails Jorie into assisting him at least with his image by offering a large grant to Jorie's group that helps disadvantaged children with talent obtain scholarships. He also adds a piano for her impoverished protégé Darius Jackson. She reluctantly accepts. As Jorie and Simon come into close contact and fall in love, he has evidence that Simon's uncle is pulling a stock fraud that apparently implicates Lily's father.
Though the villains are too obvious and the "wrap up" to ingenuous, contemporary romance readers will enjoy this delightful tale because of the key cast. The lead pair feels the attraction, but both know she is way too passionate him, as he prefers logic. The secondary romantic duo provides immaturity yet hope for the future as they refuse to allow any barriers to hinder their plans. This quartet makes for a wonderful novel that the audience will value.

Book Description
The push for students to excel at school and get into the best colleges has never been more intense. In this invaluable new book, the bestselling co-author of Raising Cain addresses America’s performance-driven obsession with the accomplishments of its kids–and provides a deeply humane response.
“How was school?” These three words contain a world of desire on the part of parents to know what their children are learning and experiencing in school each day. Children may not divulge much, but psychologist Michael Thompson suggests that the answers are there if we know how to read the clues and–equally important–if we remember our own school days.
School, Thompson reminds us, occupies more waking hours than kids spend at home; and school is full not just of studies but of human emotion–excitement, fear, envy, love, anger, sexuality, boredom, competitiveness. Through richly detailed interviews, case histories, and student e-mail journals, including those of his own children, Thompson illuminates the deeper psychological journey that school demands, a journey that all children must take in order to grow and develop, whether they are academic aces or borderline dropouts. Most of us remember this journey, if we are honest with ourselves, but our children must experience it in their own way, for better or worse.
In stories that are by turns poignant, shocking, uplifting, and inspiring, we see students grapple with the textured reality of their lives, devising their own unique strategies to survive and thrive in school. For parents, this book reveals the hidden emotional landscape of the school day and points toward the answers we both desire and dread as we seek to help our children find success in school and beyond.
Bridging the worlds of the growing and the grown-up, and told in Thompson’s compassionate voice as both psychologist and father, The Pressured Child shows us how to listen for the truth of our children’s experience–and how to trust, love, and ultimately let go of a child. It is a crucial book for our stressful age–and an ideal resource for families struggling to survive it.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Great Resource for Educators or Parents.......2005-08-19
Michael Thompson has an easy writing style and salient points to make in this latest book on pressured children. In the spirit of "A Tribe Apart" (Hersch) he shadows days in the lives of students and draws some worthwhile and meaty conclusions. His background in psychology gives credibility to his analysis; his readable prose will reach a wide audience. As a middle school principal we will use this book with parents in our Book Club; working in an international school in southeast Asia a book about "pressured children" is most appropriate.
A must for parents.......2004-10-24
No matter how involved you are with your child, it can be impossible to truly understand what is going on inside his/her school. This book gives parents a valuable look at what our children are dealing with every day. Mr. Thompson tells individual stories from the kids' viewpoints--extremely helpful. I saw my own child in his example of a boy who is "allergic" to school....and reading about this boy was like looking into the future. If I have any complaint, it is that the author didn't discuss the option of homeschooling as a positive alternative for some children like this. For those of us without many school options (no money, living rurally), his suggestion for finding a "better fit" in other school situations, did not apply. Our "allergic" son is doing great with homeschooling now and after reading "The Pressured Child" I'm even more committed to trying to keep him at home where he can learn to love learning....not dread school. Even if you have a child who has a "school brain" (as Thompson calls it) you should read this book to see how your successful child is actually getting through his/her day. I should note this isn't an "anti-public school" book-- but more of a look inside the schools so you can understand...and decide if your school is a good fit for your particular child. Fascinating reminder for all of us who have been out of school for a long time!!

Good addition to your vegetarian cookbook library.......2007-01-11
This book is set up to be used - nicely laid out with recipes on one page only so you don't have to flip pages while you are cooking. I haven't tried all the recipes yet but the ones I have tried have been great. I especially liked the 30-Minute Vegetarian Chili and loved the Red Lentil Dal. I'm looking forward to trying the Beer Bread along with some of the soup recipes. The fact that the recipes in this book contain extra fiber is definitely a plus but I bought it because they taste so good!
very small book with no pictures; recipes aren't appealing.......2003-03-18
book is very small, not many pages, no pictures except on the front page; very disappointed; many recipes don't have anymore fiber than average cookbook.
Roughage Reigns.......2003-02-27
In The Fiber For Life Cookbook, acclaimed natural foods author
Bryanna Clark Grogan's challenge is to make us believe that "fiber" and "gourmet" can be used in the same sentence. With all of the attention focused on protein, fats, and carbohydrates today, fiber has been virtually ignored (except for Weight Watcher's, which made the connection between fiberous foods and weight loss many years ago). Simply put, when the outside layer of seeds, fruits, legumes, etc., is stripped away in a refining process, dietary fiber is also discarded. Grogran explains that dietary fiber is responsible for balancing alkalinity and acidity, and for detoxifying chemicals in the gastrointestinal system that can cause diseases such as cancer. Without fiber in our diet, cancer-producing toxins are produced in the gut by bacteria that flourish in a fiber-deficient system. When this occurs, Grogan points out that constipation may be a precursor to such life-threatening diseases as diverticulitis, large bowel cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, gallstones, hiatus hernia, varicose veins, obesity, diabetes, and hemorrhoids, many of which do not occur in those consuming a high fiber diet. A chart of "Fiber Superstars" lists 50 foods containing at least 4.5 grams of fiber per serving (a cup of kidney beans contains a whopping 19.4 grams of fiber!). This informative chart is now on my fridge. Another chart lists the fiber and calorie content of over 100 name-brand foods. Sample menus, with suggestions for increasing fiber, are listed for meals and snacks. Over 150 pages are devoted to recipes for breakfast, breads, appetizer/snacks, salads/dressings/sauces, soups, beans, vegetables, grains, and desserts. With a flair for international cuisine, Grogan circles the globe with her inventive Yemiser Wat (Ethiopian Spicy Lentils), Eggless Crepes, Pizza Dough with flax seeds, Pasta Alla Primavera, Vegetarian Feijoada (Brazilian Black Beans), Chiles Rellenos Casserole, Red Lentil Dal, French Strawberry Pie, and Italian-Style Apple Tart, to name but a few of the mouth-watering, high-fiber, vegan dishes. I highly recommend this book to anyone who doubts that the words "fiber" and "gourmet" can indeed be used in the same sentence.
Gourmet fiber treats ..........2002-11-17
The benefits of fiber can hardly be argued - and Bryanna's new cookbook tells you how to incorporate fiber in your diet AND make it taste delicious too. In this book she focuses more on vegetables, beans and grains, to a larger extend than in her previous books which focused more on tofu, seitan, and other (low-fiber) meat subs - Bryanna gets inspired from cuisines from all over the world. The Italian dishes - taken from her fabulous "Nonna's Italian Kitchen" - are outstanding (such as her Pasta alla Primavera), even a humble-looking recipe like Irish mashed potatoes with kale is a gourmet meal. There are Chinese-style, Latin-American, Indian, and Middle-East-style dishes, ranging from soups (The Lentin Soup is so good!), salads and dinner entrees, even several cake recipes! This may not be as ground-breaking an effort as her truly outstanding vegan masterpieces "Nonna's Italian Kitchen" and "Authentic Chinese Cuisine" - but less can do! This is a completely respectable vegan cookbook that you will definitely enjoy for everyday use. Me, I'm already starting to look forward to Bryanna's next book ...

Disappointed.......2005-03-18
I was really disappointed in this book. I bought it specifically for the High-Fiber recipes and it fails to tell you how much fiber is in each recipe. It gives fat content, but not fiber content. In the books title it say 150 Nutritious, High-Fiber, Low Fat Recipes, yet doesn't include the fiber content in any of the recipes. I'd like to keep track of my daily fiber intake, but I can't do so using this book. So for my purposes this book is useless.
