Book Description
They are detection’s oddest couple: two cranky detectives whose professional partnership dates back half a century. Now Arthur Bryant and John May return in a case of multiple murder that twists through a subterranean course of the secrets, lies, and extreme passions that drive even ordinary men and women to the most shocking crimes….
They are living legends with a reputation for solving even the trickiest cases using unorthodox, unconventional, and often completely unauthorized methods. But the Peculiar Crimes Unit headed by Detectives John May and Arthur Bryant is one mistake away from being shut down for good. And when the elderly sister of Bryant’s friend is found dead in the basement of her decrepit house in Kentish Town, they find themselves on the verge of making exactly that mistake.
According to the coroner, Ruth Singh’s heart simply stopped beating. But why was a woman who rarely left the house fully dressed for an outing? And why was there river water in her throat? Convinced that the old lady didn’t die a natural death, the detectives delve into a murky case with no apparent motive, no forensics, and no clues. And they’ve barely launched their investigation when death claims another victim. Suddenly they discover some very unnatural behavior surrounding Ruth Singh’s death by “natural” causes—from shady real estate developers and racist threats to two troubled marriages, from a dodgy academician working London’s notorious “grey economy” to a network of antiquities collectors obsessed with Egyptian mythology. And running beneath it all are the sweeping tentacles of London’s vast and forgotten underground river system. As the rains pour down and the water rises, Bryant and May must rely on instinct, experience, and their own very peculiar methods to stem a tide of evil that threatens to drown them all.

Customer Reviews:
Decent work.......2007-09-10
Brayant and May - the main characters of this novel - are detectives of London's Pecular Crimes Unit. London's PCU takes to investigation only very complicated, very odd and sensitive cases which other police departments failed to solve. And the case of The Water Room was supposed to be one of such mysteries.
The begining of the novel really promisses a lot. An old woman dies strange way, forgotten underground river system, people of Balaklava street, each of them has a story and may be something to hide. All this tickles reader's senses promissing a good detective story.
But somehow as the novel progresses you realize that the author actually failed to develope his own brilliant idea. Sometimes the story drifts to history and mythology a little to much. There are a lot of elder characters in the book. This could be a bit excentric if there would be not so MANY of them.
In the key points you'd expect more emotions or more drama. Unfortunately, the Water Room fails here as well. I had a strong impression, that author knows how to write about London's history, but has no idea how to deal with action.
Although, this is not the best detective story I ever read, I have to say The Water Room can be quite entertaining sometimes and overall is a very decent work.
A very exoteric read.......2007-08-27
Fowler's second novel appeals too a wide and varied audience it is not esoteric, rather, exoteric. It's an easy read with sharp, undulating plot twists, and the foolery of the geriatric detectives Bryant and May. My, what capers they get involved in, from Crippin the feisty feline, to Tate the misunderstood, affable tramp, the book runs the gamut. Aside from the esotericism of Londons lost waterways, the book engrosses and amazes the reader by making the common occurence seem so illustrative. My hat is off to Fowler along with the totality of my current garb, so to speak. The only problem with the book, and this only pertains to an esoteric audience, is the overuse of the word esoteric.
Fascinating Offbeat Mystery.......2006-05-17
If you like an offbeat, thought-provoking story, I highly recommend this mystery by Christopher Fowler. Bryant and May, the odd-couple detectives of London's peculiar crimes unit are at it again. This time they must solve the mystery of the dry woman drowned in her basement. It leads them through lost rivers, Roman mythology, paganism, and, of course, the history of London and its class struggles.
Absolutely wonderful!.......2005-09-18
The first of this series, "Full Dark House," was very good and this was even better. My only two regrets are that (1) the characters are of an age where you wonder how long they can be around and (2) I wish there were more books already there for me to read. But I know the next book is due out soon, so I'll take heart. The relationship and dialogue between the two detectives is priceless, and there are great supporting characters. The writing is wonderful-it's funny, suspenseful and educational, and, as with fine wine, should be savored but thoroughly enjoyed. Very highly recommended.
What he really said:.......2005-07-16
"I'll never understand how anyone as open-minded as you can be such a closet Victorian, Albert."

Great HVAC Rule of Thumbs!!!.......2007-01-12
This book is filled with alot of information that will come in handy for an entry level HVAC designer because it contains all sorts of fundamental equations as well as rules of thumbs that the industry uses. It's also great when you're not sure of something and it's there for a quick look up. The book is nicely laid out for convience.
Real Truth.......2006-07-11
In my opinion it's a good book for aquiring knowledge about the Design, Common Systems, codes.... For students as well as for designers also it's helpful for adopting the systems and requirements in the fast growing world.
Great Resource..........2005-07-25
I am a recent grad and working in a engineering firm where I am constantly looking for rules of thumb, helpful design guidelines, and data pertaining to my projects. This book offers a wealth of hvac information that is organized and extremely valuable for entry hvac engineers.
unorganized but occasionally useful.......2005-03-04
This book did not live up to my expectations, yet over the years I have used it on occasion. Typically, for conversions, steam tables, general rules of thumb. If you have studied for the PE exam, you probably have most of what this book has to offer.
I made the wrong decision.......2004-01-23
I was very disappointed to get this book.
I've gone through it and found it is a book of waste money and time. It is hard for me to get this book returned to get my money back because I am in Australia but I'll try.
If you like HVAC, go try other books, not this one.
Book Description
The latest in the Pamphlet Architecture series, Seven Partly Underground Rooms and Buildings investigates unusual spaces in Italy, ranging from a honeycombed and mazelike series of rooms and stairs for midgets, to the dining chambers of a Pompeiian estate, to a half-buried sphere that serves as a place for ice storage. Ray reveals these quixotic spaces through constructed drawings, collaged photographs, and insightful text.
Mary-Ann Ray is a principal, with Robert Mangurian, of the architecture firm Studio Works in Los Angeles. A fellow of the American Academy in Rome, she is also a professor at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc). Her projects have received various awards, including the Progressive Architecture Urban Design Award (1991). Her work also appears in "Re: American Dream".
Pamphlet Architecture, begun in 1978 by William Stout and Steven Holl, has become a popular venue for publishing the works and thoughts of a younger generation of architects. Small in scale, low in price, but large in impact, these books present and disseminate new and innovative theories.

Not quite "must have".......2001-02-16
The reviews of Massie's other book are telling here as well. The writing style is fine, and the real world examples are interesting, but there's NOT a lot of meat. If you're looking for a light read during which you'll say "oh, yeah - i should (or could) have thought of that", this might be it. If you're looking for a hardcore primer on personal effectiveness, this is NOT it.
Engaging, brilliant, clever and insightful leadership book.......1999-07-06
Brigid McGrath-Massie has artfully combined her wit and wisdom into a thought-provoking analysis of personal effectiveness. Through her personal experience and business leadership training, she has pulled together an easy read of material that has one really thinking about "what they say when I leave the room!" A "must have" book in a library of today's contemporary leadership information.
Book Description
This study covers the latent demand outlook for water source heat pump unitary air conditioners excluding room air conditioners across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as “regions”). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of “economic population”, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this “economic” definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city’s marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for water source heat pump unitary air conditioners excluding room air conditioners. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study covers the latent demand outlook for water source heat pump unitary air conditioners excluding room air conditioners across the states, union territories and cities of India. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 4,900 cities in India. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it’s state or union territory and of India as a whole is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-à-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each state or union territory and city, latent demand estimates are created for water source heat pump unitary air conditioners excluding room air conditioners. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. Book Description
Jackie Scott and her mother Diane Scott had tried just about every diet under the sun, sometimes losing weight but always gaining it back. So, with the help of Dianes husband, Brett, a board certified neurosurgeon, they developed their own diet complete with menus, shopping lists, over 100 recipes, and generous helpings of common sense. They soon discovered that not only did their calorie-based diet work for them (Jackie lost 100 pounds, Diane over 200 pounds, and even Brett lost 50 pounds) but it worked for their friends. This is not a starvation or a fad diet. Its not really a diet at all.Its about learning how to eat for a lifetime from two real women who have been there and are making it work.

Especially helpful if your family doesn't support you!.......2006-04-03
Jackie & Diane asked themselves why diets failed THEM in the past and what it would take for THEM to succeed. It just so happens that I had the same issue.
The recipes are very simple and easy to follow. I am a non-cook so, this is important to me. With this book, you can fix meals that are not "diet" and can still lose weight. If you would like books that are good companion volumes to this book are:
Uncle Sam's Diet & The Step Diet (The Step Diet comes with a pedometer and is based on the data gathered by the National Weight Control Registry).
No book can be everything to everybody. I read this and had my "AHA" moment. Jackie & Diane point out that you need to take care of yourself because no one else will
Easy Read!.......2006-03-24
Thoroughly enjoyable, readable, funny and serious at the same time. The concept makes sense and gives confidence that once the weight is lost, you are ready to keep it off. I like the been-there-done-that stories, makes their success all that more remarkable. The recipes are very good - not diet food but meals the whole family can enjoy.
I loved this book! Really life changing! great recipes.......2006-01-08
I really love this book--the concept of Eucalorics really makes sense to me! I have tried several of the recipes and they are delish! I think this is a whole new way to look at calorie coounting and I am extremely excited about meeting my weight and health goals. Finally a reasonable way to gain control over eating!!
Simple, effective weight loss!.......2005-11-27
There are tons of weight loss books on the market. Many of the authors have never struggled with their weight. Jackie and Diane are a mother and daughter who have lost 300+ pounds between the two of them. They know what it's like to be heavy.
The two tried a number of diets and studied the diet books on the market. They came up with the simple conclusion. If you want to lose weight you have to eat less. You don't have to combine foods in a certain way, cut out carbs or exercise till you are blue in the face. You simply have to burn more calories than you are taking in through diet and exercise.
Throughout the years there have been many diet plans that agree with Jackie and Diane. Cut calories, move a little more - lose weight. Weight Watcher's members count points, Jenny Craig doles out low calorie meals etc. Many of these diet plans enable members to lose weight. The problem is people gain the weight back and usually a few extra lbs with it!
Jackie and Diane advocate a different approach. They advocate a system called EUCALORIES or normal calories. They suggest you select your goal weight, making it a realistic one and then multiply that weight by 12. For example if you wish to weigh 135, you would multiply 135 by 12 and get 1620. Start eating 1620 calories on a daily basis and eventually you will wind up weighing 135. It will take longer than if you cut to say 1200 calories BUT you are more likely to stick with the program...forever! Weight loss can be enhanced by adding in more excercise.
There are drawbacks to the plan. Individuals do differ in their metabolisms, acitivity levels etc. So the actual calorie count per individual may vary. But in general Jackie and Diane say this method will work for most.
One area Jackie and Diane address is dietary guidelines ie how many grains, veggies etc. you should eat. They use government guidelines By following the recommendations you will know how much and what to eat daily. HOWEVER the beauty of the method is, if you don't follow the recommendations..so long as you count the calories (baring medical problems) you should reach your goals. For good health though, it is recommended that you follow the guidelines most of the time. The recommendation for fats and oils is listed on p. 53 as 2 servings per week. This did not look correct to me and I emailed the authors. They said it was a printing error and it should be 2 servings daily.
Eating more calories but still losing weight is much easier than sticking to a low calorie diet, however, there will still be times when one has trouble. Eating protein will help with control. It has been shown that folks that eat a little more protein eat fewer calories and stay in greater control. Though Jackie and Diane touched on nutrients etc. They did not share this information and it is really crucial for many people who lose control when they eat too many carbs. It's not a matter of giving up carbs..its a matter of making sure you eat enough protein to regulate sugar surges.
The mental aspect of weight loss are barely addressed in this book and for two women that were 300+ overweight I think they could have discussed this.
The book is set up so it shares the plan in the first half and the second half is primarily recipes. Recipes include mushroom smothered chicken, ham and egg fried rice, banana muffins and smashed parmesan and roasted garlic potatoes. Each recipe includes calories, fat, carbs and protein. There is also a daily menu plan for 28 days spelling out breakfast, lunch, dinner and allowing you to select your own snacks. The back of the book includes a snack and calorie guide.
Kudos for Jackie and Diane for their tremendous weight loss accomplishment and thanks for sharing this new way of looking at how to do it!
Jackie and Diane Scott changed my life!!.......2005-11-16
I just finished reading "Calorie Queens", but I have been living it for the past year. Let me explain -
In March 2004, I heard Jackie Scott speak at a conference reception I attended in Lexington, KY. At the time I was carrying about 185 pounds on my 51-year-old, 5' 1" frame (I didn't have a bathroom scale, but weighed 188 with clothes at an October 2003 doctor's appointment). I had, however, maintained that weight for about 5 years. I was deathly afraid of the word "diet" -- yo yo dieting was the way I had "grown" from an average healthy nonpregnant weight of 110 pounds in my young adult life (from age 15 to age 30) to an average obese weight of 185 in my forties and now fifties.
Jackie's story of "learning how to eat normally" made so much sense to me -- but I procrastinated 8 months more before actually doing anything about it. I didn't even buy the book (self-published edition) at the time, but the concept stuck.
In December of 2004 I began keeping a food journal and discovered to my great surprise that I was actually eating far more calories than I would have estimated. On January 2005, I weighed in at 180 pounds sans clothes. Between January and August, I dropped about 5 pounds per month following Jackie and Diane's program of "normal Calories" (40 pounds total) -- due to my active lifestyle I ate an average of 1900 calories per day! Since August to the current date of November 16, I have dropped about 5 more pounds. At 135 pounds, I am within 4 pounds of a magic "healthy" weight on the bmi chart of 131 pounds!!
The best part of this highly nutritious, common-sense approach is that you only have ONE PLAN for the REST OF YOUR LIFE. No stage one stage two stage three then maintenance. You are starting on maintenance.
I still keep my food journal. As to exercise, while hauling around those 45 extra pounds made me breathe hard climbing one flight of steps, I now walk regularly, always take the stairs instead of the elevator, dance and play volleyball on the weekends. And my 1900 calorie lifestyle is completely workable with celebrations, eating out, in other words -- normal life! I have learned to "eat thin in a fat world" :-)
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to pursue a healthy lifestyle.

Who Wants Candy?.......2007-02-10
Great book with several receipes from easy to advanced for the same candy. Gives you a choice on what recipe to follow. Interesting stories about the candy and how the author came across the recipe.
The only candy-making book you'll ever need!.......2006-12-31
All the recipes I have tried have turned out well, although I have to admit, if my husband had his way, all I would ever make is the Marry Me Toffee! This recipe alone is worth the price of the book. Kudos to the author for this book: people like me whose mothers did not make toffee can learn to do so with ease, confidence and with great success!
You Know You Have To Buy The Book When..........2006-02-20
You have checked a book out of the public library more than a few times! I've enjoyed this book for quite some time and just recently broke down and purchased it. I've had great success with everything I have tried. My normally "I don't eat sweets" husband could not stop raving about the Hopscoth Candy. Beware, you may not be able to stop eating your confections! :) I've read many books on candy making and this one is by far the most informative. It has a nice layout with a wealth of recipes for every level of candy-maker. What more could you ask for?
The Candy Making Bible.......2005-11-04
Serious, this is the best book on making candy out there. I've looked, I know. I own over 300 cookbooks, and yet, if I want something sweet, this is my go to book. Not only has Jane Sharrock taken all the mystery out of making candy with 27 pages of easy to follow directions and instructions, she rates every recipe, telling whether it's Novice Super Simple, Novice Easy, Average, Advanced, and Expert. She tells you how much the recipe will make and exactly what you need to make it- not only the food ingredients, but all the utensils, so you can be sure you have everything on hand before you start.
The recipes themselves are a treasure hoard of delights from the elegant to simple, from complicated to comfortable. Generations of her family are represented by recipes and she tells delightful anecdotes about most of them along with the recipes. Because such a broad range of time is covered, you'll not only discover new treats, you'll find family favorites.
My only word of warning is that there aren't many pictures, so if you're someone like my friend Lindsay that thinks cookbooks need pictures I wanted to warn you, but I still recommend this book! It's perfect the way it is.
Wonderful, clearly-written tried-and-true candy recipes.......2005-08-06
This book is wonderful! It is filled with tried-and-true, well-tested candy recipes clearly written to ensure success, and prefaced by complete descriptions of why they're so special. My only quibble (and the reason I didn't give it 5 stars) is that it has the worst index on the planet (e.g., Luscious Raspberry Fudge Truffles aren't under R for Raspberry, F for fudge, C for chocolate, or T for Truffles, but L for Luscious --which you may not remember is in the name when looking for the recipe), and includes every possible version of every candy, rather than those that taste the best. Nevertheless, it is a wonderful book, and very highly recommended
