Book Description

Behind the scenes of Napoleon's threatened invasion of England, a war of wits known as "The Great Terror."

In 1801, as Napoleon's Grande Armée faced an army of English volunteers across the Channel, a secret war of espionage and subversion was being fought by shadowy men with little-known names. New weapons—rockets, submarines, and torpedoes—were being developed in France by the American inventor Robert Fulton. Even during the lull of the Peace of Amiens, when English tourists flocked to Paris, the secret war continued.

Drawing on diaries, letters, and newspapers, Tom Pocock provides a wonderful picture of the years 1801-5, and of the people caught up in these unique events: Nelson blockading the French at sea for two years while his beloved Emma Hamilton waited at home; Jane Austen and her naval brothers; the admirals, generals, and politicians on both sides; and perhaps most interesting of all, those lesser-known men such as Congreve, Moreau, and Pichegru, who were responsible for a new kind of warfare. 16 pages of b/w illustrations.

4 out of 5 stars Great addition to the literature.......2006-12-15

Trafalgar was a brutal conflict that changed the course of the wars on the continent. With the destruction of the French and Spanish fleet the British had control over the seas. This book talks about the prolonged conflict and the mission that Napoleon hoped to send his fleet on in order to deceive the British. Only Nelson's luck allowed the plot to unravel and the British to defeat the French. This is a good book once you have started to read about Trafalgar but I would not recommend starting with it. This book leaves out some events that occurred in the background but sheds new light on other aspects of the conflict. Overall it is well worth a read.

5 out of 5 stars A Time Rather Like the Phony War of 1940.......2005-12-10

The Battle of Trafalgar has long been regarded as a definitive battle in the history of the Napoleonic wars. This book concentrates on a little known time during those wars when there was peace between England and France. The peace, if it could be called that, between 1801 when it became clear that Napoleon was at least thinking of invading England until 1805 when, with the Battle of Trafalgar the threat ended.

Tom Pocock has combined his usual exhaustive research with his customary skill in writing. He presents a story of a time not unlike the Phony War of 1940 when two countries were nominally at peace but when undercurrents of war including the actions of secret agents were rampant. All was not quite peaceful during this time, Nelson conducted what today would be called raids against France and there were other activities.

This is a most interesting book of a time that was prologue to the last of the great sailing ship battles.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good and worth the money........2004-05-23

This is not as good as Mr Pocock's excellent biography of Lord Nelson, which may well be among the top two or three ever written. But it is still illuminating and interesting. I can't see how other rewiewers found it muddled, but they are naturally welcome to their view. I found this easy to follow and quite clear throughout.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting History, Muddled.......2003-08-26

I was very excited when I heard of this books publication, as I felt it would give attention to a historical period that I think is sadly ignored. Noted historian Tom Pocock, in his new book, paints the picture of the "peaceful" years, the time period between about 1801-1804 when Great Britain and Napoleonic France suffered through an uneasy peace, separated by the channel. This time period is a very interesting few years, as it shares a lot of similar aspects with the US-USSR Cold War. Two very powerful nations, unable to grapple directly with each other, use every underhanded and dirty trick in the book to degrade the others influence, while still preparing for later all out war. It was a time of espionage, rebellion, intrigue, and new weapon designs. These factors make for great history, but I felt Pocock fails in regard to a truly monumental work.

By late 1801, it was clear to most that France and her emperor were firmly entrenched as masters of the continent. French armies dominated Italy, Austria, and most of Eastern Europe, while the old empires such as the Austria-Hungarian, pledged loyalty and peace to the Corsican general. England, with its small army, had no chance of dislodging the power of France. Many at home, interestingly, pushed for peace, both in admiration of Napoleon and his "Republican" ideals and their own deteriorating financial straits. The declared peace brought little relief however, as both sides stepped up their covert activities. Alliances were proposed, economic warfare often ensued, and the British secret service sought several ways to degrade the Emperor's regime.

At the same time, one of the few military figures to emerge heroically from the war, lived a relatively peaceful (but scandalous) life as a hero of the nation. Horatio Nelson was a wily naval hero who had badly beaten Napoleon at Egypt and knew how to make full use of Britain's superior position upon the sea. His days were spent usually on personal matters, but his date with destiny was rapidly approaching, and he did stay involved in the matters of state and the admiralty. His nemesis across the waves was also preparing for destiny, desperately trying to prepare a valid invasion fleet. Bonaparte knew that if he could get his troops across the 26 mile wide straight, he would easily crush the British. The hard part, of course, was getting there.

While I had initial excitement for this story, it was soon degraded by Pocock's style of writing it. Some parts that I feel had little actual impact on the historical record, or in anyone's interest, are harped on incessantly, to the detriment of the really fascinating events taking place. I want to hear of spies, of diplomatic trickery, not constant looks at Nelson's private life or which house his mistress should by. If I wanted that, I would turn to the thousands of Nelson biographies. Too often throughout his book, Pocock gets hung up on the wide range of knowledge he's decided to include, some of which are just annoying accessories to the main story. Still, the book was fairly entertaining and educational, it is just some of the writing is tepid and uninteresting. In the hands of a better writer, I felt this story could have been something really special.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and informative........2003-07-09

I respectfully suggest that the previous reviewer may be a little hard on Tom Pocock, who is anything but a "lazy" scholar. He is prolific, industrious and original.
Not all books have to be totally original in every paragraph of every page. A book that contains SOME new interpretations, insights and information is still a great accomplishment. Pocock's book falls into this category. It does contain a lot of material already in the "public domain" (a strange phrase for knowledge, anyway), but it also contains some gently presented but nonetheless invaluable insights and information. I learned much from this book, and I'm a scholar!
The book is meticulously researched, carefully arranged, sensibly and persuasively argued and Pocock-ishly written (in other words, elegantly). It is broad in its sweep of topics, but not in the least disjointed. All topics relate and flow together to form a colourful and richly helpful portrayal of a perilous period. I congratulate Mr Pocock, who has inspired me during my own academic journey. With this book he continues to do so.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining.......2006-03-21

This is the book where two of the most lively characters ever created by Agatha Christie make their debuts. Tommy Beresford, a lieutenant during the war, is a very down-to-earth and unimaginative type of teenager, while Prudence "Tuppence" Cowley, his partner, is exactly the opposite. She is an energetic girl in her early twenties who has a fast-thinking mind and who relies more on her natural instinct than her common sense. They complement each other and make a perfect couple. Together they're able to defeat even the most notorious master criminal of their time.

In this book, Agatha Christie fully displayed her gift of a great sense of humour. The amusing conversation between the two lovely young characters never failed to crack me up all the time and I highly recommend this book to everyone.

3 out of 5 stars Great Lead Characters Bogged Down in Weak Book.......2005-03-15

Tommy and Tuppence were sparkling creations by Agatha Christie (and their ability to transfer deliciously to the small screen is also a proven fact.) But sadly they were never given as strong mystery material as Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot were and have, therefore, languished on the literary sidelines to a great extent. Their first appearance, in the Secret Adversary, is a good example of this problem. Christie is weakest when politics are involved and the story is hopelessly naive with the fate of the world being controlled by one man, Mr. Brown, who ultimately is rather easily bested by those two crazy kids of the flapper Twenties, Tommy and Tuppence. The author never, ever, succeeded in achieving anything remotely approaching a spy thriller. Still, this book will hold interest for anyone wanting an early glimpse of the crazy duo who are always a pleasure to spend some time with.

4 out of 5 stars Young Adventurers vs. Militant Labor Unions.......2004-08-22

Great light beach reading in this little known series of Agatha Christie's Young Adventurers. In this first appearance, the soon to be husband and wife team of Tommy and Tuppence cast off their post-war boredom by hiring themselves out as adventurers.

They soon find themselves Britain's only hope against an unbelievable collection of thugs, unionists, and socialists bent on destroying the empire in ways that can only be spoken of in whispers. The chrismatic yet unknown Mr. Brown is behind all of this, and no one knows who he is. Join our heroes as they chase him down with several false leads and misidentifications. After almost a century this tale still holds up well. The sinking of the Lusitania and other events of the Great War play a prominent role as Victorian life provides our setting.

4 out of 5 stars NO SECRET HERE - A FINE VOICE PERFORMANCE.......2004-08-12

Popular performer Samantha Bond uses her wonderful British voice to best advantage in reading this -not-too-heavy tale by the doyenne of mysteries, Agatha Christie.

Tommy Beresford and Tuppence Cowley suffer from a common malady - they need money. So, being an imaginative pair they decide to hire themselves out as adventurers, if you will, able and ready to tackle anything for a sum.

Better be careful what you ask for - they're retained by the evil Mr. Whittington who is a threat not only to Great Britain but also to our impecunious pair.

As they say, two heads are better than one but Tommy and Tuppence must use all the brainpower each possesses to get out of this scrape.

The dialogue features frequent feasts of repartee - a thoroughly entertaining listen.

5 out of 5 stars A fun ride through history's dark moments.......2004-07-05

After all, this novel was about an important document that would turn history on its head. In the days of great ocean liners, a secret document was sent to America for safekeeping aboard the Lusitania. The ship sank, but not before the man who kept this document gave it away to someone. Fast forward to Tommy and Tuppence who were both almost jobless and had no rich boyfriend/girlfriend to turn to. Tuppence had the idea to turn themselves into an adventuring couple and sent an ad to the news. What follows is a rigmarole of mistaken identity, blatant lies and international intrigue.

'The secret adversary' effectively introduces Tommy and Tuppence as the power couple of the detective world. The Queen's narrative is as lively as the characters itself, and you'll find yourself reading this to the wee hours of them morning.

5 out of 5 stars This one is a page-turning, spine-tingling mystery ........2004-06-24

The Secret Adversary was one of the most engaging books I have ever read. Set in post World War I England, two down-on-their-luck friends (Prudence Cowley and Tommy Beresford) form a pact to create Young Adventurers, Ltd., a company billing itself as willing to perform any task-- provided the pay was good enough. Yet before they place their advertisement, Prudence is approached by an unusual man who has overheard their conversation and wants to meet her-- alone-- the next morning. The story that follows stimulates the mind as well as appeasing those with a taste for action, without being graphic or offensive. Truly a good read.

Book Description

Hillary's Secret War is the true story of how a group of renegade journalists fought to expose America's darkest scandals through the Internet-and how the most powerful woman in the world tried to stop them.

From her own "war room" in the White House, Hillary Clinton commanded a secret police operation dedicated to silencing dissent, muzzling media critics, intimidating political foes, whitewashing Clinton scandals, and obstructing justice. Hillary's operatives infiltrated every level of the news media, federal law enforcement, intelligence agencies, and the federal court system.

They looked upon the "unregulated" datastream of cyberspace as a threat to their power, potentially devastating in its ability to bypass the controlled, corporate media. For that reason, Hillary's secret police persecuted Internet dissidents with special ferocity.

Mainstream news media spiked the story of Hillary's secret war-and of the scandals she sought to conceal. But the courageous new journalists of the Internet underground defied the odds and exposed the shocking truth about history's most corrupt presidency. This is their story.

Written with all the drama and tension of a gripping novel, this carefully researched book gives the inside story of how these modern-day patriots endured Hillary's attacks, and emerged from the battlefield to become a sprawling, innovative news source reaching tens of millions each day. Hillary's Secret War presents a tale of dogged courage and sacrifice, one of the greatest untold stories in the annals of journalism.

"Hillary's Shadow Team," says Poe, "will no doubt play a crucial role in smoothing the way for her planned return to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Likewise, the Internet will figure prominently in the effort to stop her."

1 out of 5 stars Another good-right-bad-left propaganda book.......2007-09-15

What we have here is an apparently hard-hitting, gloves-off book that exposes the depths of the corruption of Bill and Hillary Clinton. It's real purpose, though, is to preach to the choir of those who already dislike the Clintons intensely, while cleverly covering up the deeper, broader corruption that envelopes both major political parties and all the nation's major opinion molders. The proof of the pudding is in the following long passage in the book describing how Kenneth Starr's "investigators" shrugged off the frightening harassment of an inconvenient witness in the Vince Foster death case:

No one knows who ordered the harassment team to begin its operation against Patrick Knowlton on October 26, 1995. However, someone close to the Starr investigation must have tipped them off that Knowlton had received a subpoena.

Throughout Knowlton's ordeal, Starr's team treated the beleaguered witness with extraordinary contempt.

When the street harassment began, Knowlton called the FBI and requested witness protection. Nothing happened for two days. Finally, Agent Russell Bransford--the same FBI agent who had delivered Starr's subpoena--showed up. "He had this smirk on his face, as if he thought the whole thing was amusing," says Knowlton. "I told him to get the hell out of my house."

At the same time Knowlton was calling the FBI, Ruddy and Evans-Pritchard called Deputy Independent Counsel John Bates to report the intimidation of a grand jury witness. Bates's secretary jotted down some notes. "An hour later I called again," says Evans-Pritchard. "She let out an audible laugh and said that her boss had received the message...Bates never called back.

What did Starr's people find so funny about the situation?

As a last resort, Knowlton prepared a "Report of Witness Tampering" and took it personally to the Office of the Independent Counsel. "It was their responsibility, at the very least, to find out who leaked word of his subpoena," notes Evans-Pritchard. According to Evans-Pritchard, John Bates responded by calling security and having Knowlton removed from the building.

Perhaps the most telling indication of Starr's attitude toward Knowlton is the humiliating cross-examination to which this brave man was subjected before the grand jury. Knowlton says that he was "treated like a suspect." Prosecutor Brett Kavanaugh appeared to be trying to imply that Knowlton was a homosexual who was cruising Fort Marcy Park for sex. Regarding the suspicious Hispanic-looking man he had seen guarding the park entrance, Kavanaugh asked, Did he "pass you a note?" Did he "touch your genitals?"

Knowlton flew into a rage at Kavanaugh's insinuations. Evans-Pritchard writes that several African American jurors burst into laughter at the spectacle, rocking "back and forth as if they were at a Baptist revival meeting. Kavanaugh was unable to reassert his authority. The grand jury was laughing at him. The proceedings were out of control."

It was at that point, reports [British reporter and author Ambrose] Evans-Pritchard, that Patrick Knowlton was finally compelled to confront the obvious: "the Office of the Independent Counsel was itself corrupt." (pp. 106-107)

Note carefully the names of those two Starr underlings involved in the harassment of the witness, Knowlton. They are John Bates and Brett Kavanaugh. On page 143 Poe says, not surprisingly, "Like most Americans I support George W. Bush and his War on Terror." But Poe conveniently neglects to tell his readers that this president, whom he praises as a "decent, God-fearing man," has made federal judges--with the approval of the United States Senate--of these two accomplices after the fact of a high-level murder. He even leaves their names out of his extensive index. You will never find this connection made anywhere in the mainstream media, either.

I rest my case.

5 out of 5 stars An interesting history of an alternative media.......2006-09-08

This book does give a concise and to the point overview of scandals and cover-ups that have ties with Hillary, with documentation for further research. However, as far as this book is specifically concerned, I would describe it as a very interesting history of the new Internet journalists, especially as regards their rocky relationship with Hillary Clinton when she was first lady. In addition to this, it also documents the failure, in many cases, of the mainstream "Big" media (sometimes purposely, according to the author) to report the facts as they are, so as not to offend certain power structures in the country.

I do not believe anyone in their right mind, (Hillary is in her wrong mind :-) reading this wonderful chronology of Internet journalism, could pin the term "vast, right wing conspiracy" on the expository news released by the more conservative Internet journalists. After all, politically speaking, it has been the left wing, and less the right wing (with some exceptions), in recent history, that has resorted to more surreptitious and psychologically deliberate forms of persuasion. Either way, I do agree with Anne Coulter's observation, as quoted in this book, that "Liberals fail in any media realm where there is competition. In the three media where success is determined on the free market--radio, books, and the Internet--conservatives rule....Only a monopoly could produce a Dan Rather." (p. 56)

4 out of 5 stars Interesting study.......2005-04-27

Richard Poe provides an interesting take on the emergence of the conservative internet as a response to the liberal slanted mainstream media (New York Times, Washington Times, LA Times, CNN and the big three networks). Poe discusses how some of the powers behind such sites as the Drudge Report, NewsMax and FreeRepublic (for example) were ostracized by the mainstream media and turned to the internet to voice their opinions. They were quickly joined by hundreds of thousands of like minded net surfers and what started as a very large discussion forum grew into political action. It was the conservative internet that exposed the falsified documents used as the basis of the CBS "60 Minutes" report on President Bush's National Guard service. Liberals tried unsuccessfully to answer back with their own web sites. When she found she couldn't control them Hillary unleashed her dogs; suddenly people were being audited, sued and some lost funding (when donors were threatened). Through it all they preserved and, in so doing, flourished.

While I have no doubt that liberals would like nothing more than to silence the conservative voice (which threatens their monopoly on news, opinions and, hence, threatens their agenda), I think Poe sometimes sees conspiracies where there may not be any (however, if I went through what some of these folks did I'm not sure I would see conspiracies everywhere also). I also think he goes a bit overboard with his praise of Matt Drudge (and his website).

But those reservations aside I recommend this book for two reasons. First, for anyone coming a bit late to the internet party this book is good at catching you up to what's gone into getting things where they are today. Second I found the discussions of the Vince Foster and Ron Brown cases fascinating. It lays bare the lengths the Clintons, their minions and accomplices within the media will go to obfuscate the truth in pursuit of their goals (power and a return to the White House). Will the internet be powerful enough to stop them? Poe seems to think so. I hope he's right.

5 out of 5 stars An Insider's Guide to the New Underground.......2005-03-14

Poe plays Virgil and Hillary is the Debbil on this fascinating tour of the nether regions of trans millennial political intrigue. It would be hard to find a better spirit guide than Poe. He speaks with a reliable precision when delving the personalities and policies that make up the current American debate. This came forth on an episode of the O'Reily Factor when the host categorized George Soros as a "Leftist." Poe responded that Soros is not a doctrinal leftist and, in fact, is not doctrinaire. He merely wants to rule the World.

Read Secret War and learn about Hillary's collusion with the major media to deflect and divert public attention from the scandals of the Clinton Administration. Get the details on Whitewater, Chinagate, and the Arkancide body count. Find out who really invented the Internet. Read about the New Underground- when it became self aware, who are the major players and what influence it will have on Hillary's aspirations- and what she is willing to do to stop them.

Hillary's Secret War had taken on even greater importance with the implosion of the mainline media that took place shortly after publication. The events of Rathergate read like the next chapter in "..Secret War", highlighting Poe's perspicacity and underlining the credibility and importance of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Be informed....read this book...........2005-03-04

This is one of the most frightening books I have ever read. Others have reviewed the content very well, so my only message is...If Hillary is on the ballot, please do not go to the polls until you have read this book and understand who she really is. Then make your decision.

5 out of 5 stars A good, enjoyable read worth savoring.......2007-04-04

I took my time reading this book and so enjoyed it much. The first chapter was difficult for me because of everything going on at once and characters to get acquainted with, but it was worth the sweat! Very creative! The author sweeps the reader away to another world, and takes us on fond (and dangerous) adventures throughout. I can't wait until I have time this summer to read the second book. I hear a third is almost ready for publication. Anyways, worth every penny and a writer I hope will give us more in time.

A revolutionary program that can indefinitely postpone the need for dialysis

If you've been diagnosed with kidney failure, this book could save your life. If you suffer from diabetes, hypertension, obesity, or any of a host of conditions that put you at risk for kidney disease, you owe it to yourself to read what is in this book. If you are among the 60,000 North Americans who go on dialysis each year, the information in this book could substantially improve your quality of life.

In Coping with Kidney Disease, a leading expert tells you, in plain English, what you need to know to:

The centerpiece of Coping with Kidney Disease is Dr. Walser's revolutionary 12-step program for avoiding dialysis. Based on treatments he has pioneered with his own patients at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the program calls for a supplemented low-protein diet supported by treatments to control blood pressure and correct high cholesterol. So effective has this breakthrough strategy proven to be that in many patients it actually worked to slow or arrest the progression of kidney failure to the end stage.

Knowledge is power. Coping with Kidney Disease empowers you with what you need to take charge of kidney disease.

5 out of 5 stars Thank God for Dr Walser.......2007-10-09

This book, in my opinion, is a must for kidney patients. Well written and easy to understand, it gave me a much better understanding of CKD and what I need to do to live a longer and healthier life. Dialysis is not something I want to experience.

After being diagnosed with CKD 18 months ago (stage 3)I did a lot of research on diet, etc. and happened upon Dr. Walser's book. With the approval of my nephrologist, I started using the amino acid suppliments in place of most of my dietary protein. My GFR went from 45 to 75 in three months. Very heartening!

Most of the recipe books for CKD patients, in my opinion, offer a nutritionally deficient regimen and many seemed more like recipe books for developing diabetes. Being a person who likes whole foods, I decided to create my own diet regimen. I bought a copy of DietPro (a diet program that tracks food nutrition by weight) for my computer, a digital food scale, some Calwood Nutritionals amino acid powders and some of the other nutritional suppliments Dr Walser recommended. Since I'm still in the earlier stages of CKD, some days I still eat a small amount of animal protein with my evening meal, but limit it to under 4 ounces raw. I keep my potassium at 2000-3000 mg, phosphorus at 1500-1000 and sodium to under 1500 daily.

It wasn't easy at first, but I'm used to it now. It takes a bit of time to set up the menu plan initially, but after that I spend about 15 minutes a day on DietPro working out my daily menu. My nephrologist says I'm doing very well and says he wishes more of his patients took a more active interest in managing their CKD. My bun creatine levels have improved and my blood potassium levels have dropped to the normal range. The swelling in my ankles and hands is pretty much gone too.

              Thank you Dr. Walser!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A Must for Those with Kidney Disease.......2007-08-09

This book is the best out there on Kidney Disease and how to manage it. I rated it 4 stars instead of 5 because I think there is room for improvement with regards to diet and menus. For those seeking information on Kidney Disease and how to best deal with it, the biggest frustration is the lack of good information available. The author explains why not much has been done about educating the public with kidney disease. A lot of good information.

              5 out of 5 stars awesome!.......2007-07-29

This book was easy to understand, you could start from the beginning or skip to sections of interest.

              5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2007-07-15

Even though some of this book is technical, most of it has case histories on people who delayed dialysis for many years so that is proof that patients can delay dialysis with diet alone. There was also mention of amino acids and when I mentioned it to our physician and nephrologist, our nephrologist told me we didn't need amino acids and not to administer anything without consulting with him. However this book can help with the diet and help loved ones cope with Kidney disease as when you are told someone in your family has it, it is a shock and feeling of despair, this book comes in handy.

It has helped me better dealing with it.

              2 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2007-02-14

This book may be more helpful for the person who is a borderline candidate for kidney disease in instructing them in ways to better care for themselves, what to avoid and what to look for in regards to progression of the disease.

4 out of 5 stars The best of both worlds (raw and cooked)........1999-06-19

If you are looking for excellent raw cuisine, or if you are interested in great vegan recipes, try this book. Having experimented with both for 20 years, I find this book to be among the best in either genre. Almost every recipe I've tried is truly noteworthy, but the living foods recipes stand out as both delicious and easy to prepare. Highly recommended -- by someone who is not big on angels, but who loves to eat well, and hates a lot of prep.
