WHAT WE RISK
Mick "Brew" Axbrewder is a P.I. who's seen better days. Once a full partner with investigator Ginny Fistoulari, now he works mostly as her hired muscle. They don't talk much since the time his screw-ups led to her losing a hand.
But their latest client's story doesn't add up. He claims to be on the run from mobsters to whom he owes large gambling debts. But he seems almost determined to get into harm's way, and to drag Brew and Ginny into the line of fire beside him.
Just to survive this case, much less solve it, Brew and Ginny are going to have to start working together better. And Brew's going to have to face up to his greatest fears.
"The settings ring true, and the characters have depth."

similar to The Man Who Killed His Brother.......2007-08-11
This is the second in a series of mystery novels written by Donaldson in between larger writing projects. In this episode, Axbrewder and Fistoulari are hired to protect a bank executive whose life is threatened, but their client tells so many lies that they spend half the book trying to figure out what he is actually up to, while the goons come after them and all hell breaks loose, etc. It's not very deep, but makes fun vacation reading. This novel is very similar to its predecessor, "The Man Who Killed His Brother", although a bit slower and more angst-ridden. In fact it is perhaps a bit too similar in structure. In any case, if you are going to read both books, it is preferable, though not essential, to read TMWKHB first.
A PATHETIC TRAVESTY!!!.......2004-12-19
Unlike Donaldson's first "Chronicles" trilogy (arguably one of the finest epic fantasys ever written), this pretentious attempt at hard-boiled detective fiction is inauthentic, tiresome, and a complete waste of the reader's time. I got my copy for free, and I still feel cheated! If you want to read something worthwhile in this genre, check out something by Raymond Chandler, Andrew Vachss, or David Cray -- even the worst mass-market fluff by that hack Robert Parker is far better than this travesty! Have you no shame, Mister Donaldson?
hardboiled detective story inside an angst laden drama.......2003-11-09
In Puerto del Sol in the southwest desert, private sleuth Mick "Brew" Axbrewder feels self loathing and guilt. During an alcoholic stupor, he killed his brother. Adding to his despondency, his detective partner and lover at that time Ginny Fistoulari blew off her hand with a grenade saving his butt from his latest blunder. Though a doubting Thomas about his abilities, Brew struggles with sobriety vowing in a personal covenant to take care of the depressed Gin, who has not mentally recovered from her trauma.
Gin and Brew are hired to protect First Puerta del Sol National Bank Chief Accountant Reg Haskell. He tells them he lost a lot of money gambling at the El Machismo and has been threatened if he fails to pay off his debt. Though they doubt Reg's claim, Brew serves as his personal bodyguard. However as the sleuths investigate his story they find other fabrications and conclude the entire tale is fiction. When several murder attempts occur, Brew and Gin struggle to put aside their personal problems to uncover the person wanting their mendacious client dead.
THE MAN WHO RISKED HIS PARTNER is the second tale of an expansion of novels written in the 1980s under the name Reed Stephens (see THE MAN WHO FOUGHT ALONE). The story line mixes a hardboiled detective story inside an angst relationship drama. Though Reg is a great support character with his changing explanations fun to follow, the tale suffers from an overabundance of negativity. While Gin behaves semi comatose barely living, Brew is the poster boy for guilty loser. Their angst overwhelms a solid private detective tale, depressing the reader.

Excellent mystery, with involving characters.......1998-05-25
i would expect no less from Stephen Donaldson writing under an asumed name, author of the Gap series, a brilliant mystery novel if you like them this is a good one
The Man Who Risked His Partner.......1997-04-26
The 2nd book in a 3 book series by Reed Stephens. Brew, feeling responsible for Ginny's disabliity, forces Ginny to take a job as body guards. They almost end up the targets of a mob hit. A great follow up to The Man Who Killed His Brother
Product Description
Stephen R. Donaldson is one of America's acclaimed storytellers. But in the 1980s, he published three novels about private investigators Mick Axbrewder and Ginny Fistoulari, as paperback originals under the pseudonym "Reed Stephens." In 2001, Tor published a fourth novel about these characters, The Man Who Fought Alone, this time in hardcover under Donaldson's own name. Now Donaldson has returned to the first three novels in the sequence, rewriting and expanding them. The Man Who Killed His Brother was the first, and this is the second of the three.
Mick "Brew" Axbrewder is a P.I. who's seen better days. Deeply into alcoholism, some time back, he accidentally shot and killed a cop. Worse, the cop turned out to be his brother. Even worse, in a case not long after that, his partner Ginny Fistoulari blew off her own left hand, protecting him and others.
Now Mick works mostly as hired muscle for Ginny. They don't talk much. But their latest client's story doesn't add up. They're going to have to start working better together. And Brew's going to have to face some of his own worst fears.

Pretty Decent.......1999-05-05
I enjoyed this series. It was a lot better than Jefferies "Loremasters of Elundium" series, which got pretty boring after awhile. One complaint about all of Jefferies writing is his incessant overuse of his characters laughing. If they are happy, sad, mad, or just sitting around he has them laugh: "Krann laughed softly", "Garteret laughed, scattering dust", "Erek Shrieked with laughter", etc. It is more irritating (maybe) than the Book of Mormons overuse of the expression "and it came to pass." Somebody buy this guy a thesaurus. The ending leaves a lot of loose ends for further Elundium books.

Book Description
Happy and innocent, Dawn's daughter Christie has grown up in the safest, most loving of homes...
Yet Christie can't help feeling as if a dark cloud hovers over Cutler's Cove...a cloud whose origins lie in her family's troubled history, and the many questions no one, not even Dawn, will answer. Only one person can always chase away her blues: Gavin, Daddy Jimmy's young and handsome stepbrother.
Then, in one harsh night, Christie's world is changed forever. She is shocked to discover her Uncle Philip's unbrotherly love for her mother but even worse is the way he now looks at Christie, his eyes bright with tortured passion. Fleeing to New York City, she finds her real father...a pathetic, helpless has-been. Desperate and heartbroken, she turns to Gavin, who travels with her to The Meadows, the plantation where Christie was born. In Gavin's arms, in the first, tender moments of true love, Christie finds a refuge from her painful memories. But The Meadows is blighted by its own dark secrets -- and all too soon Christie is torn from Gavin's embrace. Now as black storms of evil gather around her, Christie must struggle to break the cruel bonds of the past...to defy the curse that has haunted Cutler's Cove for generations....

Okay, time to face the truth.......2007-09-03
V.C. Andrews was not a good writer. period. I guess the books are great if you like reading the same poorly written story about kids and incest over and over. I'll admit, reading about sick stuff can be entertaining. I would suggest a true crime book about a serial killer. The writing is usually better and the content far more interesting.
Come on now, how many good writers would have new "ghost-written" books published in their name long after they are dead? Answer: Zero.
It was ok........2004-12-25
Not the best out of her series. I really couldn't stand the fact that they were treating Jefferson like he was five instead of nine. A nine year old is capable of dressing and bathing himself. Actually, most kids I know at that age are beginning to get modest. But in this story they carry him around and dress him like he is five.
I also wish they would cut out on the rape stuff. Philip was one of my favourite characters and than they had to go and make him rape Christie.
The saga continues.......2004-08-16
This book was probably my least favorite in the Dawn Cutler series, however it was still decent.
It was fun to see Dawn's daughter go back to the places Dawn visited, meet the people she met- to see what had happened since. It was also fun to see "new" characters take on the evil role. However, something just didn't click for me in this book as it did in the others. Maybe it was just that Dawn wasn't present for most of the book.
I'd recommend this series though as a whole if you enjoy VC Andrews or if you enjoy books of this genre.
one of my favorites.......2004-04-28
i have to say ive read the cutler seris the doll seris and now im reading the casteel seris the cutler seris is my favorite so far and this book is my favorite by far but isnt it kind of preverted that christie makes out with her step uncle? i mean that isnt as bad as philip and dawn but still well im not going to be one of the those reviewers who tells you everything because then it ruins the book. i think whoever writes these since V.C Andrews is dead shouldnt just stop a seris like that i want to know what happens with christie and gavin and if things get better for christie and jefferson at home same thing with the doll seris but thats for another reveiw
3.5 stars..........2003-07-04
I was not happy that this book killed off Dawn and Jimmy so fast. Made the book a little more difficult to get into. FITA and the Heaven series 4th books were more engaging that this one. I love the Cutler series, but I didn't really enjoy it as much from Christie's perspective as I enjoyed Bart's in FITA. this book was good, but definitely not my favorite. I'm glad I read it since it is part of the series.

I can't get over it : A Handbook for Trauma Survivors.......2007-03-09
Wonderful book! I find it a very helpful book! I am using the book as part of my therapy with my therapist. The book explains alot to me the questions that I had about myself after being raped. I recommend the book to persons who needs to overcome trauma.
Very good book for Understanding PTSD.......2006-03-17
This is the first book I attempted to read after being diagnosed with PTSD. It helped me understand my unexplainable behavior and symtoms and helped me come to terms that I was not "crazy, as perceived, but simply having a normal reaction to an abnormal trauma. I would love to meet the author sometime. I HIGHLY recommenend this book.
Good, but not great.......2006-01-30
I liked a lot of the insight this book had to offer. I don't like the promise that the reader can diagnose themselves by answering a few questions. A person doesn't need a diagnosis to know what they are going through, and they should not be diagnosing themselves anyway- for obvious reasons.
Good book, but the POST TSD SOURCEBOOK BY GLEN SCHRALDI.......2005-08-31
IS MUCH BEETER. This book discusses what PTSD is, but not how to treat it like the (PTSD) sourcebook does.
Great text.......2005-08-23
I counsel trauma survivors every day of the week and this is an excellent text. It has depth and practical advice. On the basis of this work I have purhased another by the same author.

With expert tips on growing the biggest, sweetest tomatoes possible, The Great Tomato Book also includes tomato history and lore, heirloom varieties, tomato science and research, tomato festials, tomato trivia and a wealth of recipes--an ultimate guide for the tomatomaniac.
Customer Reviews:
Good reference for novice growers.......2005-03-08
This book was a handy reference tool when I decided to grow heirloom tomatoes from seed. Though 145 pages, the bulk of helpful information is found within about 60 pages, which cover tomato growing essentials. The remainder is devoted to tomato history and tomato recipes. There is also a fairly good list in the back of the book of tomato seed resources. One noticeable omission from that list is Gary Ibsen's fabulous tomatofest.com, which offers more than 500 organic heirloom varieties (perhaps due in part to Ibsen's competing book of the same name!)
Nevertheless, this book does its job in walking the reader through the steps of successful tomato growing:
a. CHOOSING SEEDS (hybrid vs. OP, or open pollinated varieties.) I was especially glad to see the author discouraging the reader from hybrids, especially F1 hybrids, which:
reduce naturally occuring varieties over the years
encourage pollution through the seeds' reliance on fertilizers
don't reproduce normally from seed
F1s may be more disease resistant, but they also help the commercial seed grower maintain a monopoly over what kinds of tomatoes are grown, whch is why saving and sharing seeds of naturally occuring varieties is an essential component of biodiversity.
b. CHOOSING POTTING SOIL
c. STARTING THE SEEDS - how, where, when
d. TRANSFERRING SEEDLINGS
e. MAINTAINING AND ROTATING CROPS
f. FIGHTING PESTS AND DISEASE - an important chapter, since heirlooms are more prone to disease
g. MULCHING
h. HARVESTING
The book also covers "tomato lingo" fairly well, explaining such terms as determinate and indeterminate, and the difference between heirloom and other naturally occuring varieties. It features a few b/w photos and 8 color pages of tomato pictures that while pretty, are not at all functional. Better to have devoted the color photos to plants with insect damage or disease as a helpful reference to the home gardener.
The Great Tomato Book is a beginner's book, and a good one. It got my tomatoes off to a wonderful start a couple of years ago and I've once again pulled it off the shelf to refresh my knowledge as I start a new crop of tomatoes from seed.
A great book for tomato lovers.......2002-03-21
The Great Tomato Book is simply an excellent book. Clearly and concisely written, it covers all aspects of the tomato, from its history right down to what to do with your harvest. While it may not have loads of colour photopgraphs like some other tomato books--it does have some though--it more than makes up for it in the numerous interesting and useful bits of information that are found throughout.
The great tomato book.......2000-06-14
This book is truly one of a kind for the beginner or the expert. It provides informative incite to from the seedling to the dinner table for those that consider themselves tomato addicts. The book is an extremely good bargain for the price and should be in every gardener's library.

Good overview - would have liked yield and maturity info.......2005-01-10
This is a beautiful book. The pictures show many varieties of lush tomatoes. The recipies look delicious as well and I look forward to trying many of them this coming Summer. The author's general descriptions on certain varieties is nice as an overview. The book is really an overview of tomatoes and growing methods and fertilizers and offers specific recipies.
If the author would have included tomato info on time to maturity for each of his tomato descriptions, then the book would have been more helpful to those trying to plan out what varities to grow to space out harvesting. Now I have to bop between the book's tomato descriptions and some seed web-sites to figure out what to plant to get a relatively spaced harvesting, which I have to do often since the tomatoes described in the look comprise a long list. Also, it would have been nice to know which varieties were hybrids and which were heirlooms. I'm surprised the author didn't mention Red Brandywine in his list as the flavor is the same with a better yield and some say it's easier to grow than the pink variety.
The chapter of "Tomato Fest" could have been eliminated. I wasn't sure as it's purpose other than noting that the author liked to set up tastings.
The chapter on favorite soil amendments can be summarized as a description of the soil amendment (typically organic which is great) and then the use "apply to soil prior planting." Again, this was an overview and I would have liked to know why to use one over the other, how to use, etc.
If you're looking for a beautiful overview book on tomatoes, then this is it.
But if you've become passionate about tomatoes and not only want an overview, but also require better instructions on the "how to" of growing and seeding and access to to more specific info on the varieties themselves then check out "100 Heirloom Tomatoes for the American Garden" which is beautiful as well.
Great Tomato Lover Book.......2003-02-19
I thought this book was a great general book. You get a little o everything. I love the part where Gary is talking about his favorite tomatoes. The information on the festival is inspirational!
Tomato culture and recipes for those who want to grow them.......2002-09-04
This was sold as a companion book to Carolyn Male's "100 Heirloom Tomatoes." Dr. Male's book is pretty complete for a home tomato grower, but this book has extra tips for growing those love apples, and a lot of recipes, too.
So I am reviewing this primarily as a cookbook, though it is half cookbook, half gardening guide. The recipes range from soups to desserts such as a tomato granita (frozen sorbet.) There are of course spaghetti sauces. And here's where the book surprised me. The recipe for Bolognese sauce (tomato and ground beef gravy) is excellent, in fact, one of the best I have used. At home I have a taster who compares all things Italian to "Ma's". (Ma was born in Sicily, lived to be 100 and routinely cooked for a crowd of invading Visigoths on a Sunday.) The sauce lived up (almost) to Ma's unachievable heights. It was meaty, but balanced with plenty of fresh tomato and bolstered by canned sauce and paste. The addition of carrot and celery provided natural sweetness to offset the acid of the fresh tomatoes. No sugar was needed. We used farmstand plum tomatoes (my homegrown were dwarfed by the draught.)The directions for peeling them (bowl of boiling water, bowl of ice water) worked well. In no time, I had the fresh tomatoes peeled and seeded. A handful of fresh opal basil was substituted for some of the dried herbs. The proportions in this recipe are what makes it work so well. A huge, huge success.
The tomato growing tips add more information and lore than in Dr. Male's book. If you are deeply into growing tomatoes, I still would recommend "100 Heirlooms" but this book is stands alone for useful recipes and great hints.
Great overall book.......2001-05-16
Great book to learn which ones to grow and what soil should be ammended w/. Best all around tomato book i have and i have 15.
