Book Description
Bizarre messages carved into the flesh of two corpses in Mobile, Alabama, launch a special unit devoted to solving psychotic crimes. They're also launching Detective Carson Ryder into a nightmare with only one weapon-his own terrifying past.
Download Description
"""This is a pitch-perfect psychological thriller..."" -Library Journal,(starred review) Recalling Michael Connelly's taut storytelling and James Patterson's searing narrative twists, The Hundredth Man introduces a daring new talent. From its explosive first pages to its startling conclusion, this novel creates a world where heroes can't succeed without madmen, and the dead are the most dangerous of all. When bizarre and cryptic messages are found on a pair of corpses in Mobile, Alabama, junior police detective Carson Ryder and veteran cop Harry Nautilus find themselves in a mysterious public-relations quagmire pitting public safety against office politics. With the body count growing, Ryder must confront his family's terrifying past by seeking advice from his brother, a violent psychopath convicted of similarly heinous crimes. Ryder finds himself falling for Ava, the striking pathologist processing the gruesome corpses. But Ava's past holds its own nightmarish secrets. Chasing false leads while their boss relentlessly undermines all progress, Ryder and Nautilus come to realize someone close to them is the killer's ultimate target. Thundering to a stark and chilling revelation, The Hundredth Man marks the arrival of an author who raises the stakes on every page."
Customer Reviews:
A bad Start!.......2007-04-04
Jack Kerley made a very dissapointing 'debut' with this novel. 'Hundredth Man, The' is just another serial killer suspense, without any point of originality and - even worse - with a plot so ludicrous, so unbelievable, that you'll feel a jerk to lose your time with a so bottomless book.
To say the truth, Mr. Kerley made a direct rip-off of Thomas Harris celebrated characther, Hannibal Lecter, in the figure of the insane brother of the detective who is investigating the case. But all the similarity stops just here. Lecter has something to do and to say in Harris's books but the weird and crazy created by Kerley is just a crazy crying all the time!.
Don't lose your time and your money.
PHENOMENAL !!!.......2007-03-29
Let me start by saying that Jack Kerley is a terrific writer. From the chilling first chapter to the nail biting end, The Hundredth Man pulls you in and doesn't let you out. I was trapped in this book for 2 days. I could not put it down. The characters are fascinating, and sympathetically human. Nautilus and Ryder are very well developed and provide an entertaining sense of camaraderie, while Ryder's brother Jeremy is terrifyingly fun to read. Ryder's old wounds and personal conflicts are exploited through out the book and provide the insight that makes him a very likable hero. Kerley unfolds the plot masterfully as nothing goes unexplained or wasted. Every chapter and sub-plot has a purpose. The author gets you hooked on just enough information to draw you in until the answers explode on the pages in dramatic fashion. There is enough humor to make you laugh aloud, just enough horror to keep you on edge and plenty of surprises to keep you guessing. My only complaint is that the writing, while fresh, vivid and stylish, is burdened by numerous typos. It's the only reason I did not give this book 5 stars. There are simply way too many. Looking past the poor editing this is a phenomenal book that sets into motion what should be a terrific series. I can't wait to read the next two installments already out.
Ripped from.......2007-02-26
... the pages of the Hannibal Lector genre. Insane but insightful murderer-consultant. Empath-cop with a violent childhood. Venal ladder-climbing bigwig who gets in the protaganist's way.
Even though this is a familiar read, Kerley does entertain with his imaginative use of adjectives. The plot kept me afloat for the most part, though as he headed toward the climax, I found myself urging him to wrap things up a little faster. I mean, we all know how it's going to end.
Get this!!!.......2007-01-28
Great, great book!!! I couldn't put it down and finished it in 2 or 3 days. I have recomended this book to many people. I was very impressed with Kerley's style and how smooth of a read this book was. It will grab you and grip you and suck you right in!
This guy is one to keep up with for future writings!!!
I loved this book! Fun witty and quirky.......2006-09-16
Carson Ryder, is a detective on the fast track. Hiding from his past, Carson is forced to seek help from his deranged psychotic killer brother, whose insights help him understand the criminal mind. Together with his old friend and partner Harry Nautilus they investigate a series of murders. Along the way there are a lot of wise-cracks and humour as they deal with internal politics and solve the crime. Carson is also dealt an alcoholic love interest in the form of the new ME. Carson solves the crime but not without first putting his own life in danger.
Yes, some of the characters were clichéd (a big African American cop, a "tough" woman ME), but it was an incredible page turner with witty writing and an interesting character in the form of new detective, Carson Ryder. The psychotic serial killer is also a familiar cliché but that's what I like to read and I thought this was pretty good.
The Hundredth Man is fun and entertaining. If you're reading it for a serious treatise on serial killers you won't find it. There are some interesting insights into the minds of the psychopathic but that's not what this book is about. Readers of this book might also enjoy the JA Konrath novels.

Don't waste your time.......2007-08-06
For me, this papal letter was a rambling waste of time. The fault can't be in the translation to English, because the pattern continues throughout the entire 70 pages. If it isn't required reading for a class (which it was for me), save your $5 plus shipping and invest it elsewhere.

Frank R. Stockton

Book Description
1899. Thonias Hewlings Stockton, clergyman, wrote fantastic tales for children under the pen name Frank R. Stockton. He also wrote books for adults. Among his amusing books for children Rudder Grange is the best known. The Lady and the Tiger, Adventures of Captain Horne, Mrs. Null, Casting Away of Mrs. Lecks and Mrs. Aleshine, The Hundredth Man, Great Stone of Sardis, and Captain's Tollgate were also quite popular. The book begins: In one of the liveliest portions of a very lively metropolitan street was situated the popular resort known as Vatoldi's. It was a restaurant which owed its extensive patronage to the inducements it offered to persons of refined tastes and moderate purses. It was in a shopping district, and from early breakfast-time until a very late supper hour, Vatoldi's seemed never to be without customers, and John People seemed always to be behind the little desk near the entrance of the long and handsome room. A Beautifully crafted tale.......2001-06-01
This is the second book in Patricia Kennealy-Morrison's Celtic science fiction. The series started with "The Grey Hawk's Feather" which introduces you to all the famous characters, Merlyn, Arthur, Ygrawn, Uther, Gweniver, and the somewhat passed over, in other tales, Taliesin. In this particular telling Taliesin, the greatest bard ever known to Keltia, narrates in bardic style the story of his friend and fostern Arthur. Morrison does away with the more annoying parts of Arthurian legend, Lancelot for one, and concentrates on a very different telling of the tale in space upon a planet far away. The second book encompasses the arrival of Arthur and his army on Tarra, the home of Ederyn the then traitorous "King" of Kelts, through Arthur's eventual victory over Ederyn, (I don't think I'm giving too much of the story away), and his leaving of Keltia to visit far off worlds as well as his eventual return. The truth of Talyn's mother is finally revealed, with shocking implications.
Now, just let me say, I LOVE THIS SERIES! I especially love the character of Taliesin. He is my favorite from all of Morrison's books and possibly from any others I have ever read. His voice is exceptionally distinctive in the telling and very consistent. He is a very unassuming character, terrified out of his wits most of the time and sure that everyone knows it, yet is completely honest about this fact. I love the style of these books too. The prose is perhaps a bit cumbersome when you first begin reading but it is defiantly an epic tale, every event fraught with dan from now 'till nevermass, and all the characters with the seeds of greatness in them, Arthur most of all. I love this particular universe because it is so imaginative, Celtic legend mixed with sciencficiton in a successful blending.
Now, the Kirkus reviewer has a point when he says that Patricia Kennealy-Morrison has a "general air of self-importance". He hits the nail right on the head. She is continually prating on the virtues of the Kelts. How they are so much more evolved than "other societies I could name" in that they have magical arts, no rape, varying marriage laws, and women are considered equals. It is an attitude hard to avoid throughout her books, but this is the only detraction I will make and, you will admit, not a very serious one.
more of the best!.......2000-07-03
Patricia continues the great storytelling of the previous books of the Keltiad in this novel. We are transported first person to the land of arthur (for a twist this land is outer space) and told Arthur's life story through the eyes of his bard and close friend Taliesan. This book moved me to tears at some points. The love and friendship bonds that the book builds are remarkable! I couldn't put it down.
If you have read the Copper Crown and its counterparts you will be intrigued when you discover that the writing style is completely different from the first triology. This is writen in first rather than third person. It is rare that an author has such talent as to switch styles. The style change means that you will never tire of the Keltiad. Instead of boresdom you will find love for the lore as past history links all the books together.
Great stuff.......1999-07-05
I have highly enjoyed all of the books in this series, and I also agree with the above reviewer that there are some inaccuracies in the Kirkus review that lead one to believe that the reviewer did not give it his or her full attention. In all, if you love fantasy, Celtic myth or Arthurian legend these books are well worth a read.
If you love Arthur, read this book!!!.......1998-12-09
I don't think I would've written anything regarding thisseries, even though I love it, except for one thing. In reading thereview by the critic I noticed an error I'm sure all fans of this series will note. In this particular adaptaion of the Arthurian Chronicles, GWENIVER IS NOT ARTHURS SISTER, SHE'S HIS COUSIN!!!!! If you are going to crtique the book, sir or madame, I strongly suggest, as do all of Ms. Kennealy-Morrisons fans, I'm sure, that you READ THE BOOK!! You can find a copy of this wonderfully written and inspired tale in your local book store. Obviously you don't have a copy of your own!!!

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful cookbook full of healthy recipes that really are tastey!.......2007-08-14
I have made many of the recipes in this book for my son who is now 1 year old and he has enjoyed them all. Most of the recipes are quite easy and not very time-consuming. There are many that are good for the whole family to enjoy. I love this book so much I am going to purchase a few others by this author.
Great Gift.......2007-08-09
I bought this for a friend who is expecting a baby and she loved it! She has a gluten intolerance so this cookbook will be very helpful for her and her husband. They loved it!
Great book!.......2007-05-09
I needed a baby food for dummies type book and this is one of a few I liked! Its very easy to use, has good explanations and so far seems to provide correct information with regards to foods to avoid, list of approved foods, etc. I like the charts that provide an at-a-glance for what is okay to feed, etc. Definitely worth the money!
Great ideas, but some are questionable .......2007-01-06
I love many of the meals in this book and they are generally easy to prepare (I love that many of them can be frozen), but I think some of the suggestions are questionable for small babies (for example a lot of tomatoes and onions). Otherwise, I love it and would suggest it to any moms interested in making homemade baby food.
Too meat intensive.......2006-11-09
We hastily bought this book for a friend and just as quickly returned it after taking a look at it's content. If you're still on the carnivor boat and wish to expose your child to the high dioxin and chemical load found in meat, then this book's for you. If you're a bit more informed and concerned about the contamination of meat, then look elsewhere for alternative nutrition and recipe info.
As a pharmacist, let me tell you that children are exceptionally sensitive to the chemical contamination that is in U.S. produced meat. This ain't the good ol' days and meat has changed. Be very careful where your animal products come from or consider eliminating them altogether.
