Book Description

It is 1568, three years since Ursula Blanchard exchanged her work as a spy in the service of her half sister, Queen Elizabeth, for the relative calm of married life. But when Elizabeth summons her, loyal Ursula senses there is more to her seemingly benign request than meets the eye. She is to pluck Penelope Mason, her inappropriately flirtatious protégé, from court and find the disgraced girl a husband, and she is also to deliver a secret warning to Elizabeth's arch rival, Mary, Queen of Scots. Gradually, Ursula comes to understand the true delicacy and danger of this mission. Exiled after the suspicious death of her husband, Mary is now a fugitive queen and a "guest" in northern England's daunting Bolton Castle. Ursula, with her blade-sharp acuity, can outsmart Mary's notorious charm and sidestep treasonous traps while extracting the truth. But can she protect those who look to her -- including young Penelope -- from a deadly game where, to those who hunger for power at all costs, murder is a small price to pay?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great blend of fact and fiction.......2004-06-12

This is the latest in an excellent series of mysteries set in England during the reign of the first Queen Elizabeth. The writer shares a comprehensive understanding of the uneasy political and religious dynamics of the time, as well as life at court and the (very different) life in every-day Elizabethan England.

The plot is well designed and carried through and the characters are well-drawn and memorable. I enjoy the fact that the protagonist is a woman and the viewpoint is feminine rather than masculine. It's all too easy, when writing historical fiction, to gravitate to the masculine, with the hero mounting his steed and dashing off in all directions, with exciting chases and plenty of swashbuckling fights and battles. You'll find a little of that here, but mostly you'll find a woman just trying to do her best for her susceptible young relative and for her queen. It's just that she has an exciting time doing it.

Blending historical fact with dramatic and readable fiction is no easy task but the writer accomplishes it beautifully in this book. You feel the sad magnetism of Mary, Queen of Scots and the dedication and frustration of Sir Francis Knollys, her host and/or jailer.

I found this to be a really good read from a writer who really understands this period in history.

5 out of 5 stars A Historical narrative which happens to have a mystery!.......2004-06-06

I have read and enjoyed some historical fiction in this period, particularly the Chronicles of Lymond by Dorothy Dunnett, but generally am skeptical of mysteries. So often mystery writers spend a lot of energy deliberately misleading the reader and the payoff ("Oh, it was a red herring") leads to frustration at time wasted.

Not in this case. I picked up this book without realizing it was one in a series and enjoyed it so much I went back and read the first novel (and will be making my way through the rest). The way this book is written, it seems more like a historical novel whose main character is reluctantly involved in a mystery, than a book in which the mystery is the point.

Ursula Blanchard is an engaging, strong, sympathetic woman, and her point of view is sensible and shrewd. All of the minor characters are fully drawn-- including poor man-crazy, plain Penelope who keeps getting into trouble through her romantic nature. I knew this book was going to be good when Penelope's embarassing crush on the music teacher was never explained away-- it really WAS a poor teenage crush (so often something like this would be used as a red herring in which the music teacher was involved in a plot too etc. etc.)

Great sense of menace once Ursula gets to the countryside, but nobody is a cardboard villain.

I read this after having completed a disappointing collection of mystery short stories called "Much Ado about Murder," so Buckley's winning me over is even more impressive as I was skeptical that merely setting something in a historical period could make the story interesting... and of course, it isn't the merely the period that's interesting.

Buckley is a terrific storyteller and Ursual is a wonderful narrator. Really enjoyable in every respect!

3 out of 5 stars Some mystery and some history ........2004-03-01

I am an avid mystery fan and a lover of Tudor history, so naturally when a book that combines the two comes out I snatch it up. I'm usually disappointed, because there is not enough of either. But this book, while not perfect, had enough of both to satisfy me.

This is the first book in this series that I have read. I won't go over the plot, as others have already covered it. I found the heroine, Ursula Stannard, to be believable and sympathetic. The history was sound and the plot plausible (if not riveting). I enjoyed the depiction of life and customs in 1568, both at court and in the north.

For all that, I had the entire solution figured out very early on. I think that many historical mystery writers spend so much time "setting the scene" that they ignore the machinations necessary for a really good mystery. So while I enjoyed the first half of the book alot, the last half lagged.

4 out of 5 stars a journey into Elizabethan times.......2004-01-27

Ursula Blanchard, now Ursula Stannard is back for another adventure of political intrigue. It's not an adventure that she particularly wants. She had given up spying for her half-sister Queen Elizabeth or so she thought. She is sucked back into the antics of court when there is some trouble with Ursula's ward, Penelope Mason. Pen, one of Elizabeth's ladies-in-waiting has fallen in love with a married man. Elizabeth is not amused. Elizabeth uses this to have Ursula to go visit Mary Queen of Scots at the northern castle where she is held captive. Ursula does not want to accept her assignment, but much to her surprise her husband Hugh urges her too. She, her daughter Meg, and her ward set out on their journey north. Things do not turn out well when Meg is kidnapped and one of her men is killed. This is the first of mishaps and misadventures that the group faces.

Fiona Buckley skillfully interweaves historical fact and fiction. Ursula Stannard is portrayed as a strong independent woman who can hold her own with any man. Most of the characters are richly drawn and the setting gives you a real sense of time and place. The story line was interesting and kept you reading. Overall, this entry is an entertaining addition to a well-received series.

5 out of 5 stars A few low points, but..........2003-12-28

....if you can overlook the modern language (did Elizabethans really use pounds and ounces as units of measurement?) and a rather weakly described ending (we really would have liked to see how enraged Elizabeth became over this plot, or how much the culprits had to suffer!), this is still a fine read!

Book Description

A LITTLE ITALY, A LITTLE FRANCE, A LITTLE CRIME, A LITTLE ROMANCE

Meet Blackie and Chloe, two best friends who decide, over tequila shots at the campus bar, to spend the summer after graduation backpacking through Europe. Blackie wants to go a little crazy—drink, smoke, flirt, meet men, have a romance or two. Chloe wants to nurse her broken heart and bury her nose in a book. One is dark and boisterous, the other blond and quiet. Together, they are an irresistible combination to men . . . married men, to be exact.

The girls upgrade their accommodations from hostels to hotels when they let the men who’ve been wrecking their trip finance their fun. Accepting these cheaters’ invitations to their hotel suites, Blackie and Chloe beat them at their own game and make off with cash and whatever valuables are at hand while the men sleep it off. It’s the perfect crime (no married man would want to explain why he had two young coeds in his hotel room, now would he?) until they hit the wrong mark in Monte Carlo. When their latest “victim” turns up dead, the gig is up . . . and the Bandit Queens are on the run.
Chloe and Blackie’s ride through Europe gets a whole lot wilder with a bevy of wacky characters in hot pursuit of the two women who were last seen with the dead man and his golden statue. Will they be arrested, strain their friendship, or worse?

Bandit Queen Boogie is a wild goose chase of mistaken identity and international intrigue. If only every trip to Europe was this much fun.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A really fun read!.......2007-08-10

This story of two friends' travels through Europe is a lot of fun. The characters are interesting, the plot twists and turns are many, and there were plenty of places that made me laugh out loud. A quick, enjoyable read!

3 out of 5 stars Was it my gender?.......2006-05-26

My wife made fun of me for reading this book because it's pink (and I'm color-blind and couldn't tell).

I've read almost all of her other books. In general they're all pretty good. But this one sort of confused / bored me. It's got the "girls out of country go wild thing" going on but it just never really seemed to develop beyond that to me. Oh well, maybe her next book will pull me in better.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely a different novel for Hayter..........2004-09-11

With my reading of Sparkle Hayter's latest book, Bandit Queen Boogie, I'm now up to date on her writings. And I must say, this one is unusual... It's difficult to describe the plot, as there are several wacky subplots that seem unrelated but converge at the end...

Blackie and Chloe, two friends who appeared mismatched but understood each other, decide to head off to Europe to help Chloe forget a relationship. While over there, they find out that they have a knack for running cons that separate men on the prowl from their money. That's the main thread. In initially unrelated subplots, you have an Indian crime boss who's Ganesh god statue is stolen with something of value stashed inside. There's a rebellious heiress that skips out on court-ordered rehab and is trying to meet up with her boyfriend so they can run off together. A reporter who's apparently on the edge is over in Europe on a company-ordered "vacation" and is stripped of a story he's been working on. And believe it or not, all these things end up meshing at the end. The girls are thought to have killed the son-in-law of the crime boss after he stole the statue. They are being pursued unknowingly by his hired goons. The reporter is trying to come up with a blockbuster story, and he's going to try and uncover the story of the heiress. The heiress is on the run but her boyfriend has apparently dumped her and taken off with her money. Chloe is mistaken as the heiress traveling with a Canadian friend, so everyone wants to find her. Neither of the girls know much of what is transpiring. There's a few more subplots there, too... But any more would give things away, and it's just too confusing to try and explain anyway...

This is a strange novel. If you like crazy stories going off in different directions, and situations where peoples' lives intersect with each other in unusual ways, then you'll most likely enjoy this read. If you want a logical plot with believable story lines and rational scenarios, then this one will drive you up the wall. I think I enjoyed the writing more than the story, but your mileage may vary...

Book Description

From the New York Times bestselling author of Under and Alone comes an intimate and riveting account of federal law-enforcement agent William Queen’s relentless hunt for one of America’s most cold-blooded criminals.

As an agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, William Queen must tackle a number of challenging cases, including going undercover to investigate a group of violent skinheads and infiltrating and busting a ring trafficking in high-powered explosives, drugs, and firearms. In the winter of 1985, he faces his toughest mission to date: he must apprehend Mark Stephens, a notorious narcotics trafficker who has been terrorizing the communities around Los Angeles with frequent rampages involving machine guns and hand grenades. A recluse living in the treacherous backwoods outside the city, Stephens is a cunning survivalist. Nobody has been able to catch him, but Queen is determined to take him down. Queen’s unique expertise is not taught in any police academy or ATF training seminar–he honed his outdoorsman abilities as a kid. Stephens may have finally met his match in the unwavering Queen, who is adept at hunting and trapping and living for weeks in the wild. Queen will use these skills–along with surveillance, confidential informants, and intelligence gathering–as he doggedly tracks his dangerous quarry, a chase that culminates in a gripping showdown high in the San Bernardino Mountains.

A fascinating look into the daily life of an ATF agent and a taut portrayal of a monthlong manhunt, Armed and Dangerous depicts a classic race against time–lawman versus outlaw–in a harrowing true story of life-or-death suspense.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as his 1st book.......2007-08-13

I really liked his first book and thought this might be about the same. I was wrong, not even close! The read was quick and the ending was pretty lame. Sometimes the true story is not the best story! I should of waited and got the book from a friend or the library. Sorry!

5 out of 5 stars Like Being Along for the Ride!.......2007-08-08

William Queen has done it again! Reading this story is like being at his side as he pursues one of the most unpredictable and dangerous felons in modern times. I read the book in two days and found myself not wanting to let the story and the people go! I just hope that Queen has more stories to tell of his twenty plus years in law enforcement!

4 out of 5 stars Another good book.......2007-08-05

This is a good book. It has an interesting insight into how government agencies really work. Having worked for a government agency in the past, I understand how paperwork and supervisory influence slow investigations and hinder law enforcement in many ways.

I would have given this a five star rating, but Mr Queen's book Under and Alone is clearly a five star book and this one is not quite as good. Still a great read...

Queen has done it again! I don't think I've ever read a book so fast, I just couldn't put it down. If you liked Under and Alone then you will love this book. This is just a really good story, the authors did a very good job of getting you acquainted with the characters and using so much detail that you feel like you're right there beside Queen along for the hunt. I feel like I could probably join the ATF right now. They would ask for my credentials of course and I would be like, "ah, hello, I read both of Bill Queen's books, where do I sign up."

Miller's work here, her first solo foray after a half-dozen collaborations with the prolific Andre Norton, is not bad, but not terribly good either. Her characters might compel if she didn't insist on whisking them offstage every other chapter in order to pursue her multiple storylines. This narrative dodging back and forth should keep the novel lively, but ends up frustrating this reader instead, particularly when she yanks us out of a really climactic sequence in order to pursue some interior monologue of a minor character. Miller is clearly trying hard at her world-creation here, one of the staples of post-Tolkien fantasy, but she's trying too hard.

4 out of 5 stars Well researched and well written.......2003-04-02

This book seems to fall somewhere in between Feist & Wurts' Empire trilogy and James Clavell's Shogun. It has similar thematic elements to the Empire trilogy and the tone and atmosphere of Clavell's seminal work. Miller seems to have done her homework in researching for this book in that the samurai mentality of medieval Japan is ever present. The attitudes and beliefs of the characters add a note of authenticity (not that I'm an expert, but judging from Clavell's book) to the book.

Yes, the plot is almost exactly the same as Feist and Wurts' series: a young woman must fight for her right to assume her father's throne in a medieval Asian setting dominated by men. However, the story elements differ quite a bit. Miller places more focus on the samurai mentality and code of honor than Feist and Wurts did. She also adds elements such as geishas and their behind the throne movements that only enhances the atmosphere of the book.

Miller's strong point is her characters. While many authors attempts at writing in a medival Japanese world result in many characters becoming interchangeable, this is most definitely not the case here. From Javere, the main character, to her court wizard and military leaders, each has their own personality and quirks. The desert people she mixes in also adds to the diversity of the world that is only hinted at in other places. Her dialogue adds to the mixture. Not only is it realistic and authentic in tone, but it also adds to the strong characterization.

Unlike Clavell's book, however, this is definitely a fantastical story. From the court mage to the dragon warriors, this book is firmly rooted in the genre of fantasy fiction. Miller does not overpower the reader with this, though, which makes these elements much more mysterious and engaging. Not only that, but the characters react to them as if they were not unexpected. By making them seem, not common, but rather expected, they seem that much more believable to the reader.

If you enjoyed Feist and Wurts' Empire trilogy, you will most likely enjoy this standalone book. As it is out of print, however, you may have a bit of a time tracking down a copy. I do wish there was a sequel to it as I would enjoy seeing what has happened to the characters and the ending seemed a bit abrupt.

          4 out of 5 stars Swords and Kick-N females.......2002-09-13

I have enjoyed reading about this mythical land very much. Javere is clean character. She does what she does because she must. She will not give up. I believe that women need characters like that. Ivo waits for the right moment in everything, he is kind, loving and patient. With their love they do not know how to handle, Javere comes through victorious. She does have help from many other characters but it is she who emerages victorious alone. Shab Vorsa and his wife are refreshing characters. They brought good humor into the story.
Although I will recommend this book to almost anyone, some of my friends were a little upset by the graphic nature of the description of the rape.

4 out of 5 stars Long live SHAB VORSA!.......2002-01-24

The story takes place in Monserria the land of the 5 provinces and revolves around Javerri one of the daughters of the Lord Qai, Lord of the 3rd Province.
Upon the 3rd Lord's death bed and having no sons to give Lordship to, he gives over his Lordship to Javerri.
But before she can truly become Lord of the 3rd Province she must Journey to the 1st province to be recognized by Lord Yassai "The sublime ruler of the 5 provinces."
Not truly wanting her to become the lord of the 3rd province he sets her out on impossible task that she must complete in order to be recognized.
This is where the book REALLY begins to pick up.
She and her companions journey out of Monserria to land of Fogestria and beyond to complete Lord Yassai's impossible task.

The author does a really good job of making you either like or hate a character. All of the villains are very detestabel and all the good guys are very likeable. My personal favorite are: Vorsa the desert man: This was just awesome! He had a great personality and had some cool moments.
Wande-Hari the mage: He may have been an old man but I loved this guy! And he had probably the single best moment in the entire book.
Also the story is very mature and should probably not be read by young kids.

It has been a long time since I read a book that I really did not want to stop reading. Every time I would start reading this I would almost always have to force myself to stop.
My only gripe is that I felt that the book was kind of rushed near the end. But it's still a great book nonetheless.

          4 out of 5 stars Original!!.......2001-09-28

A wonderful story about a woman who finds herself defending her right to be a lord in a land ruled by men. Married to a noble husband which she loves but cannot bed. Armed by good friends & subjects, two strong wizards & a dragon-warrior, she goes on a dangerous journey to prove herself worthy of the position of Lord of the Third Province, while people at home & beyond scheme against her.
A tale of courage, love & betrayal. An engaging story though not for younger readers because of the content.
I found myself laughing, cheering even amazed at times. Ms. Miller builds an interesting world with strict customs.
But I felt the ending come on abruptly, I would have liked the writer to "dwell" a little more on the details in the end & elaborate more about the characters feelings. i guess I didn't want it to end!
Highly recommended, Read it you'll enjoy it!!

5 out of 5 stars Another point of view.......2007-10-10

Is a very helpful way to deal with "ADD". I agree with the author that there are several ways for us to learn and experiment our world.

5 out of 5 stars Glad I read this book before medicating my son.......2007-03-27

After being told by my son's second grade teacher that she thought my son had ADD, my husband and I took him to three different professionals. The first two wanted to medicate him. The third tested him and gave us this book to read. It turned out that our son had many allergies to both foods and environmental items. He also was above average intelligence and was bored with his classwork. We bought a computer and got him learning software. We also signed him up for piano lessons and had him read many books. We took care of his allergies through diet and shots. He is now a high school sophomore who is in all honors classes. He is planning on going to school to become a surgeon. Please take the time to investigate all your options before going straight to the Ritalin. Some children will still need the medication but use that as your last resort. Another good book to read is "Is This Your Child?" by Dr. Doris Rapp. She discusses the allergy aspect to behavior problems.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent suggestions for managing ADHD.......2007-02-01

I'm amazed at the negative reviews on this book. Apparently when a psychologist has the gall to suggest we should stop drugging our children, it causes an uproar.

Whether you chose to medicate your ADHD child or not, there is a wealth of information here. And it goes beyond the obvious of "limit TV." The 50 suggestions are a quick read, and they not only introduce things that might work, they explain WHY they work.

I especially liked his discussions on why ADHD kids are so kinetic and how they are haptic (hands-on) learners. Also, he explains why ADHD kids benefit from full inclusion in a regular classroom. And he introduced a concept I hadn't considered before, that ADHD kids might not get distracted from overstimulation, but from understimulation (i.e. they act out from boredom).

It's obvious Armstrong has learned a lot from his years of working with these kids. Reading this book and trying his suggestions has made us a beneficiary of that knowledge.

I've read many books on this subject, and I consider this to be one of the most useful. I recommend it to any parent raising a child with an ADHD/ADD diagnosis...whether or not your child is on meds.

3 out of 5 stars The premise is wrong, but it still may be valuable.......2007-01-22

There's a reason why I gave this book 3 stars, and it's because there are indeed other problems that share SOME of the symptoms of ADHD. And it's absolutely true that if you take Adderall, for instance, and you don't truly have ADHD, you can get into trouble you may never be able to get out of again. It's not necessarily a bad idea to read books like this. BUT... and it's a big but...

All you have to do is take ONE dose of a psychostimulant, and you will KNOW if you really have ADHD or not!! This isn't rocket science. It's EASY if you know what you're looking for. Let's look at Adderall, for instance. Virtually everyone who takes it will feel good. That's not what you're trying to figure out. You will feel only one of two possible ways. Either you'll be speedy high, rather manic, and unable to sleep for three days... and that's the NORMAL reaction... or you'll be relaxed, calm, and thinking seriously about a nice nap. (That was me.) This is how you know!! These meds are indeed addictive and dangerous for people with normal brains, but they are very safe for us ADHD folks. They've been around for one hundred and twenty years. They're not "new" or "untested" or "controversial." As a matter of fact, they are the only psychiatric medication that originally came from traditional Chinese medicine, which has been around for more like five thousand years. (Amphetamines were synthesized from ephedra.)

In addiion, the AMA and APA and all medical or psychiatric associations of EVERY kind accept the ADHD diagnosis. The basic ingredient in Adderall has been prescribed for seventy years, and the ingredients in Ritalin for thirty. There's a lot that still isn't known about ADHD; I, for one, think it is a much more comprehensive disorder of personality that anyone realizes, especially in adults. But saying ADHD doesn't exist is in the same category as young-earth creationism. No thinking person has any obligation to respect that kind of assertion.

To sum up, correct diagnosis and medication saved my mind, my sanity, and my life.I have tried every natural remedy, elimination diet, supplement, herb, fast, cleansing regimen, therapy, and exercise there is to help ADHD. Many of them help. They really do. But they work as SUPPORTS to the right medication. I would REALLY like to see this author live with my ADHD without it. I guarantee that he would get off the high horse VERY fast. So apart from the fact that yes, you really do have to be sure you or your child have/has ADHD before you take the meds, this book deserves a rating more like a hundred negative stars.

              1 out of 5 stars Concerned .......2006-09-12

If you suspect you or your child has ADHD ("A.D.D." is not the correct acronym), please look elsewhere for treatment and practical strategies. Any ADHD intervention book worth its salt includes a variety of approaches to treatment. If you want to avoid medication, there are plenty of options - this book is nothing novel. However, medication does work best for many children and adults and the benefits definitely outweigh the "costs" (which are relatively minor - these medications are considered quite safe). Stimulant medications do not "change" children's personalities or "break" their spirits - they help them improve their ability to function academically, emotionally, and socially. Why wouldn't you want these things for your child? Please talk to a physician or psychologist and ask for book recommendations. This book is a waste of time!

One potato is about 100 calories and is a good source of Vitamin C. While it is a fat-free food to start with, who can resist butter and sour cream?

Stephanie Ashcraft loves to create the 101 Things to Do With A ...cookbooks and she is a highly creative cook who knows how to create delicious recipes. She has a bachelor's degree in family science. She has been teaching cooking classes since 1998.

In this book, she also includes helpful hints for buying potatoes and gives the basic potatoes and their uses. You might want to choose a russet potato for hash browns or a waxy potato in salads. She gives information on how to select potatoes and this is great information for all your potato recipes.
