A Novelist with New ideas.......2006-08-23
Alys Clare's novels are like a breath of fresh air. I love medieval murder mysteries and there are certainly a lot of them about (thank goodness), but the authors books breathe new life into the period and her will they won't they situation with Helewise and Sir Josse, holds the reader's attention as well. Don't be swayed into thinking that these books are written with the female reader in mind. They are for everybody, young and old, male or female. Alys Clare lives in Kent where the Hawkenlye mysteries are set.
An old man, a pilgrim dies in Hawkenlye Vale. There is nothing suspicious about the death, or so it is thought. The man was gravely ill when he arrived. At home at his manor Sir Josse d'Aquin is perturbed when he sees a group of horsemen riding towards him. By their bright and expensive clothes he knows that they are wealthy and important men, but he is surprised to see Prince John in their midst. John is a man he has met before, but until now was in no particular hurry to meet again.
The Prince who is accompanied by his seer, is seeking news of a stranger, one Galbertius Sidonius. As soon as the party of men have left Josse heads for Hawkenlye Abbey to ask for assistance from Helewise, the Abbess, but finds when he gets there that the Abbess has her own problems. A naked decomposing body has been found. The body has been killed by an expert. This is victim of a drunk fight or village quarrel.
Josse and Helewise are drawn deep into a mystery that stretches back much further than the Second Crusade and there is a dark, macabre figure watching their every move.

When Josse d'Acquin receives a visit from Prince John and a group of his courtiers looking for a mysterious stranger named Galbertius Sidonius, he becomes suspicious. Why would the Prince go out of his way and come to Sir Josse's out-of-the-way manor, instead of visiting the nearby Hawkenlye Abbey, through which it is much more likely a mysterious visitor such as Sidonius would pass? Josse decides to visit the abbey to get his friend the Abbess Helewise's advice. Although, upon arriving he finds that she has troubles enough of her own: a decomposing body has been found in Hawkenlye Vale, and the death the man met was clearly not a natural one.
Before much investigation can be carried out, Josse receives another visitor: his brother Yves, who has crossed the Channel from Acquin in Northern France to seek Josse out. A mysterious visitor has been asking after their father Geffroi, dead for several summers. Josse, Yves and the Abbess are soon thrust into a mystery whose roots lay back as far as the Second Crusade, and that has to do with a strange jewel called The Eye of Jerusalem...
This is the fifth novel in Alys Clare's brilliant historical series set in and around the Weald of Kent. As in all her novels, the plot she presents if wholly original and completely refreshing. And, of course, thoroughly enjoyable. The writing is nothing short of first-class, and the further development of her characters and their relationships is excellent once again. Both the main protagonists are fully developed and wholly interesting personalities. (It is especially interesting in this book to learn more about Josse's family and its past.) My only criticism of THE FAITHFUL DEAD, and it is true of all five, is that they are not long enough!
And, as for historical detail, it's all so wonderfully unobtrusive. It's full of authenticity and atmosphere, and yet not once does it feel as if the reader is being assaulted with show-off period detail. Every word is germane to the plot. In my opinion, this is the best and most thoroughly enjoyable historical series being written today. I would recommend it not just to fans of historical novels, but to fans of all crime fiction. Absolutely wonderful.

Although I only gave 4 stars for this book, it is not due to my not liking it. I found the two that followed to be better. I have enjoyed this series. I have many of this author's book becasue of the ability to make you see what you read.
Almost there, but not there just yet.......2003-11-27
I've read all of the Acorna novels so far, and this is one of the most interesting. Acorna lands on Nadhari's home planet after a little technical difficulty with the Condor (courtasy of RK). While there, she tries to help the holy cats that have fallen ill due to a deadly disease and ends up getting tangled in a political plot to rule the planet.
The atmosphere and description of Makahomia reminds me of Southeast Asia, blended together with a touch of Arabia/Egypt and even the Amazons. It gaves the novel an exotic feeling, a feeling that can't be found in metalic space ships, the rich and poor cities of Kezet, and the slightly Medival European styled narhii-Vhiliinyar of previous books. The plot line itself was interesting and had a nice twist to it, espically with the Makahomian religion and the morphing cat-people. The Wats and RK are probably the most comical, with their antics and "out-dated" believes. The only things i have a problem with is the villan and the ending battle. Althought the villan (as always) is an over egotistical maniac who's very cunning, he's just not willy enough to defeat the protagonist and in this novel, seems to lose his touch as the story progresses. The final battle was anticlimatic, since it happened so quickly.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this book, very much so. But the end irritated me. Shoudln't there be more? I don't think the authors left much space to write another book, and if you don't like everything coming to peace in the end, it was a perfect end to the series. But really, there should be another, when Aari returns, with his brother, but something needs to happen, too. But there is no space I can see open for another adventure. I did enjoy this book, with finding outNadhari's secrets, the Mulzar wanting to destroy the sacred cats, it's an enjoyable book, if maybe a slight bit slower than the other books. I was also confused on the Miw-Sher thing. OK, she was a baby. Tagoth didn't know her identity, so how on earth did she take discovering her true identity so calmly? I recommend the book, though I wish there was more detail and a chapter or two more to wrap up the loose ends.

I wanted to like this book being a fan of both authors. Even after the first hundred pages of nothing happening, I had hope. But, in the end it's a cute cat and unicorn girl story without any particularly interesting characters, adventure, or reason to be written.
Plot summary, Acorna, unicorn girl, is hijacked to a strange planet by her cat. Once there, she cures more cats, discovers that the apparently nice guy is really a very bad guy who wants to poison everyone because--uh, well, no good reason, he just does. But Acorna is good to go and has lots of help. In the meantime, she wishes she could find her boyfriend.
Yawn.

I really got a lot of good from this book! She just makes so much sense and it is so easy to implement her suggestions into my day to day life. I actually borrowed a copy and then ordered 4 copies so I could share them with friends!
As I have added some of her wisdom into my daily routine I have finally been losing some inches instead of doing the steady gaining that has been going on since my mid 30s. I never did typical diets and this was the first weight management book I have ever purchased. Great book to start with as I'll never need anotherA!

I bought this book and I really like it. I heard SL on WBAI and she sounded like she knew what she was talking about. I read this book a lot and try to follow her guidance when it comes to dieting. I try to incorperate her ideas into my own eating habits and I follow her advice about excercise and supplements, I really see a difference in my body and fat loss.

This book is the best cook book that I have EVER purchased. I Immediately I thumbed thru the pages and found that this book is divided into seasons, in order to take full advantage of the seasons growing cycles. Cherry Lemon Limaide in Summer. Cranberry chicken in the Autumn.. Chicken and dumplings for those cold winter nights, and Citris suprize awaits you in the spring.
Beyond all of the wonder recipes, they also give you tips that can turn ordinary household items into wonderful table displays. Mason Jar + unwrapped peppermint candies + a simple votive candle and some raffia string and you have a wonderful sweet smelling addition to your holiday table.
If you are concedering buying just ONE book to give or are like me and have an extremely triing, busy schedule and you want something quick to serve.. This book by the Great people from Gooseberry is your answer.

Thus far, everything in this cookbook is GOOD and HANDY (I have only had it a week or so, and have already used it three times, to the neglect of my other Gooseberry Patch cookbooks!) It's lots of fun just to read the recipes, which are both mouth-watering and almost TOO easy. Clear, simple instructions will please even the most novice cooks. I also loved how this book was organized by season: lighter, fresher dishes in the summer section; cozier, comfort-food dishes in the fall and winter.
The recipes are also extremely inexpensive to make, and in many cases, by using the staples you probably already have. In other words, this book is a no-lose situation! I'd choose it as a gift for any newlywed, college student, or family-on-the-go.
There are even really cute ideas for dressing up and changing flea-market finds, and other simple crafts and decorating ideas that even a fumble-fingers such as myself can handily accomplish.
Only one very minor complaint...it seemed that some seasonings were left out of a few the recipes, simply to keep them under 5 ingredients. But the basics here are so good I wouldn't have minded if they called for 10 ingredients.
UPDATE: Today I made the recipe for BIG Chocolate Cookies on Page 57. Something went wrong, or there was poor editing in temperature or ingredients, or SOMETHING. I ended up with a huge, gloppy, inedible mess. I've been baking since age 9 and have never had such a failure as this particular recipe. Gah!!

My mother-in-law got me this cookbook for Christmas last year (what kind of a signal is that?! lol) and I love it! I know I'm not the greatest cook out there, but this cookbook has such great recipes (and so incredibly easy!!!) that even I get compliments on my meals, salads, appetizers, and desserts! My favorite is the 3 ingredient Speedy Peanut Butter Cookies--a big hit at my daughter's Vacation Bible School!
If you can only get one cook book (ever!), GET THIS ONE!!!

I love this cookbook. It's my favorite Gooseberry Patch cookbook thus far. I plan my meals a month at a time and shop according to my list of meals for the month. I was able to plan 45 days of meals from this one cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow and have, like the title states, "Five ingredients or less", which makes the planning and preparing so much easier! I highly recommend this cookbook.
