More Romantic Than Mysterious.......2006-04-16
THE CONFESSION OF BROTHER HALUIN is the fifteenth installment in Ellis Peters' Cadfael series. These tales provide a romanticized vision of life in twelfth century England, making the times seem so pleasant that you almost want to live there. The countryside is lovely, there is generally a hint of romance in the air, and life moves at a measured, unrushed pace. No pavement, no pollution, and no hustle and bustle. Glossed over are the poverty, poor nutrition, disease, and general stench (people rarely bathed). Life, especially in the cloister, is peaceful and idyllic.
In this story, Brother Haluin is badly injured in a fall. Fearing for his life, Haluin makes a sickbed confession to Cadfael and Abbot Radulfus. He tells of a burden of guilt, carried since his youth, over a love affair that ended badly. Upon his recovery, Haluin pledges to embark on a pilgrimage to his old home. With Cadfael as his companion, he makes the hard journey only to meet with some surprises. A murder soon follows. Is there a connection between this new death and Haluin's troubled past? Trust Cadfael to uncover the truth.
This story poses some intriguing problems, but the answers are frequently quite transparent. Suspense and surprising twists aren't Peters' strong suit. Instead, she specializes in pleasant tales with happy endings, delivered in a beguiling prose style. She runs true to form in THE CONFESSION OF BROTHER HALUIN. The outcome is a happy one, if not hard to see coming, and the experience is a pleasing one.
Like most of the books in this series, THE CONFESSION OF BROTHER HALUIN is a very ordinary mystery. What makes this and the other Cadfael tales enjoyable is the pleasant world Peters creates and the charming, unhurried way in which she tells the tale. The Cadfael books are nice to read and, on the strength of that, I recommend them. You will find them especially enjoyable if you like a bit of history and some romance along with your whodunit.
Sin and Atonement.......2006-04-04
Brother Haluin suffers a horrific, crippling accident and lies near death. He confesses a terrible crime to Abbot Radolfus and Brother Cadfael, and miraculously recovers. Determined to undertake a pilgrimage of penance, he receives Abbot Radolfus' blessing for the journey. Because Cadfael is privy to the confession, he is enlisted to aid Brother Haluin in his journey.
When they arrive at their destination, they find that things are not all as they seem, and that another tragedy is in the offing. Then a murder occurs. Cadfael unravels the mystery, the sinner atones insofar as possible, and Haluin finds peace.
The mystery in this story was not very mysterious, but the Cadfael stories derive their charm from characters and relationships more than from mystery. What does it matter that the reader has solved the mystery even before the murder occurs? The more important conundrum, how to set aright the lives which are out of kilter, remains to be resolved.
My favourite so far.......2006-03-23
In the severe winter of 1142, the roof of the Abbey of St.Peter and St.Paul collapses under the weight of the heavy snowfall. One of the monks assigned to the task of repairing the roof is Brother Haluin who falls and crashes to the ground, unconscious and badly hurt. Cadfael nurses hin through the first night and is present when he awakens and gives a deathbed confession to the Abbot. Recovering, he is given permission to make a pilgrimage to the grave of a young woman that he feels he has wronged and accompanied by Cadfael, hobbles on crutches to the manor where he was formerly employed before becoming a monk. There they meet Roscelin, a noble youth in fosterage there to learn his knightly skills, as was the custom, and to separate him from Helisande, a girl of his own age and, because of his father's second marriage, his aunt! The two has become fonder of each other than was proper and so were separated by the family to prevent incest. At the manor, Helisande's old nurse is murdered and the lady of the manor delights in reminding Haluin that the poisonous herbs, whose use had been taught to him by Cadfael, caused the death of Bertrade, his love. It's an involved but absorbing plot which is sorted out by Cadfael in his inimical style and to everyone's satisfaction.
Good in this series.......2002-02-10
The confessions of Brother Haluin is another in ellis peters series of mystery tales set in a Benedictine monastery In Civil War England in the late 1130's and 40's. the main characters are Brother Cadfael, a former Crusader who enetered the monastery late in life[age 40] his chief nemisis Prior Robert tennat[who is a strict by the book prior] ,the Priors ferret like assistant, brother Jerome, and the Abbot,Radulfus, who stands above the fray[and always sides with Cadfael] Cadfeal is a renown herbalist, and is forever off helping some sick or downtrodden individual. He has a herb garden where he is able to get a respite, and where some of the more intersting dialogue occurs. Hugh Beringer is the Sherrif of the Shire{he was introduced in the second book, one corspe too many]and Cadfaels staunch ally and dearest friend{Cadfael is godfather to The Beringers son, Giles}. Cadfael, by virtue of his long stint abroad, is far more worldly then his fellows, and by default is an ametuer sleuth. In this volume, the deep winter has decended upon the town of Shrewsbury. the heavy snows are imperelling the roofs of the monastery enclosure, and some monks are snt, in shifts[due to the intense cold] to repair the problem.Brother Haluin,a calligrapher of the highest order[and perpetual penitent] has an accident, and confesses what he believes is a deathbed confession to the Abbot and Brother Cadfeal. He recovers, though mangled for life, and sets out on a pligrimage to make amends for his wrongs, and of course, Cadfael accompanies him...things,of course ,do not turn out quite as expected. ZThis is a fine addition to the series, the writing is still fine, the scenes of 12th century england gripped in a mad civil war are well done, and the deep, profound wisdom and compassion of Cadfael shine forth, making him one of the more appealing creations in modern crime fiction. In all, good great fun,and excellent book in the series
Confession is good for the soul.......2001-09-23
Hard core Cadfaelians may find this particular story too simple as you can pretty much from the beginning assumes what is about to happen. Yet Ellis Peters still keeps her writing style and has points to make. She will keep you off balance so you are not sure that you know the answer. In an interview on the DVD of Brother Cadfael - A Morbid Taste for Bones (1994), Ellis peters said that because they have trouble adapting her stories for video, which she would attempt to simplify the stories.
Although I have read the book and am sad that they did not make a video of this journey, I must say that Stephen Thorne's reading gives an added dimension to the story allowing you to race ahead or contemplate the past as he make the characters come alive with his unique voice for each.
This of course is book 15 in the series and so many things have been said, does not need to be said again. So lets hear the confession of brother Haluin and sojourn trough 12th century England with him as he takes a journey of the soul.

Wonderful read.......2007-01-15
Child of the Northen Spring is the first of Persia Woolley's trio of Arthurian novels dealing with his queen, Guenevere. I first read this book when I was in the 6th grade and I have loved it ever since. Years later I realized that it was actually a trio and I was, as you can imagine, ecstatic. The second and third novels in the trio, Queen of the Summer Stars and Guenevere: Legend in Autumn, are both wonderful reads, as well, but this one remains my absolute favorite. The way the reader is introduced to Guenevere, her childhood, her home, friends and family, her first love and first heartbreak, her misgivings about marrying Arthur, her tomboyish ways...it's just an amazing read. I have laughed and cried more times than I can count while reading this book and I have loved every moment of it. I love the way Guenevere is portrayed, as a fun-loving, opinionated tomboy instead of the perfect beauty many think of her as. All of the characters--Arthur, Merlin, Gawain, Nimue, Pellinore, Kay--they are all given amazing personalities that the reader is able to connect with. Woolley is a genius in her portrayal of the Arthurian legend and of 6th century Britain...I highly recommend this read for those who enjoy this type of literature.
Child of the Northern Spring.......2004-12-27
Child of the Northern Spring, the first in a trilogy, covers Guinevere's early years, narrated by the Princess herself. I am impressed at how Ms. Persia Wooley made Gwen a believable narrator that readers can connect with, for I found this Gwen a sincere young woman who is, at first, reluctant to leave her life for the ways of the court. Gwen is the modest little tomboy who eventually grows up and weds who will be the greatest king of all Britain. The reader can laugh, cry, and smile with Gwen (who, in this book, is not an arrogant prick like most people picture Guinevere) all throughout the book as she meets characters like an Irish lad Kevin, the powerful Lady Morgan, and the stately Queen Igraine. I am impressed by Wooley's first book in the trilogy, and I am looking forward to reading the others!
Best Guenevere ever!.......2004-10-27
This trilogy by Persia Woolley, which includes Child of the Northern Spring, Queen of the Summer Stars, and The Legend in Autumn, is well worth reading. Among the plethora of feminine centric Arthur retellings, I thought this trilogy was second only to The Mists of Avalon, which is the best Arthurian novel I've read, period. Neither a simpering bauble like Marion Zimmer Bradley's queen, nor a bitter shrew, as she is depicted in Rosalind Miles' trilogy, the High Queen in this series is a strong woman, bold, intelligent, compassionate, and well worth the love of two legendary heros. My only complaint with the character is this: Woolley saw fit to make her Guenevere homely, not the great beauty of legend, and Guenevere is supposed to be the fairest of the fair. Otherwise, this trilogy gets my highest recommendation. It is much better than the other Guenevere trilogies out there (by Miles and Newman). If you like this one, you might also enjoy Queen of Camelot by Nancy McKenzie.
Guinevere Trilogy.......2002-10-16
This trilogy is absolutely amazing. This was the first I had read of King Arthur and Guinevere and I have never found another book to match it. I can't recommend the series enough.
Gwen as a teenager.......2002-07-22
This book is not a retelling of the Arthurian legend. I didn't realize, when I found it on a used-bookstore shelf, that it was the first book in a trilogy, and that it only dealt with Guinevere's early life, up until her marriage to Arthur. The book ends just as the age of glory and pageantry begins. Unfortunately, since this book didn't pique my interest much, and the other two volumes will probably be a hassle to find, I doubt I'll continue reading this series.
Guinevere isn't the simpering fundamentalist you might recall from _The Mists of Avalon_, but neither is she the fascinating character we all want to see her portrayed as. She is a fairly standard romance heroine, sweet and tomboyish (why does it seem that all heroines these days must be tomboys?) and Generically Nice. I read through this whole 600-page book about Gwen's upbringing, and didn't learn much about her except that she likes horses.
In essence, this is to Guinevere as _Lady of the Forest_ is to Maid Marian--a pleasant romance novel, but nothing groundbreaking. I'm not the only one who is longing for the perfect portrayal of Guinevere--but this isn't it.

Interesting herb lore.......2007-10-03
This is an interesting compilation of herb lore and common remedies that were routinely used to treat a plethora of symptoms and ailments before the advent of patent medicines. The book gives listings for common ailments, the herbal and natural remedies used to treat them and interesting information about the different ingredients used. Even if you don't try any of the remedies, it's entertaining to read about what our ancestors used to treat the maladies with which mankind is afflicted.
Folk Remedy Review..........2007-02-21
This book is not what I expected. I thought I would be getting advice on what natural ingredient to use for a specific malady. It is not like that at all. It is a common sense guide on to get/stay healthy. I gave it 3 stars cause it is well-written, it just isn't what I wanted.
Review.......2007-01-13
I like this book a lot, not only for the remedy tips, but also for the bits of trivia and other information. Easy to read. i like the fact that other health-related websites are also offered for additional information.

VERY PLEASED WITH THIS HOME REMEDY BOOK!!.......2006-06-26
I was somewhat skeptical about all there claims regarding home aids, and vitamins for pretty serious ailments. But I followed there suggestions for poor circulation, after having very poor circulation in my extremities, especially legs for years now, and
being on medication for years with absolutely no relief, as far as painful calfs, and hardly being able to walk even a 10 steps anymore without having to stop and rest my calfs. I started taken the vitamin E, ginko biloba, drinking black tea 4 times a day, and complex vitamin B, and Flaxseed oil. After about 5 weeks, I just started noticing less pain when walking and increased energy throughout the day, with out napping and feeling generally better(mentally as well). I don't know if some people think that 5 weeks is a long time to wait to notice a difference, but for me after years of Pills with no improvement, and feeling less and less alive, 5 weeks was nothing. It has been over 6 months now, and I wouldn't stop taking the vitamins or herbs for nothing in the world. I feel alive and useful again. THIS BOOK HAS BEEN A LIFE SAVER FOR ME!!

I received a US Mail advertisment for this book. I thought it looked interesting but didn't want to spend the approx. $30 to buy it outright. Very glad I got it used at Amazon. Not as advertised.
A lot of mainline medical information. Not much that seemed "Folk Remedy" to me. Not recommended.

More than a hundred great choices for healthy lunches in today's fast-paced work environment.

too fancy!.......2007-03-17
some good recipes, however, I was looking for more basic/quick lunch ideas for my kids. This book is aimed more towards adults than kids, and while the recipes seem good, they are a little more involved and time consuming than I was looking for.
Ok Book - Not for Busy People.......2006-10-18
Many of the recipes take too long for us busy working types. Muffin recipes? If I had time to make my own muffins, I would have time to pack more than a brown bag lunch. On the plus side, these would be nice dishes to try on the weekend.
totally loving it.......2006-04-11
These recipes are great for any meal, but are targeted for making great lunches, unlike lots of recipes. And they're healthy and low-cost, unlike lots of recipes. And the book contains lots of good reading material in addition to the recipes. I consider this book a real gem.
Simple Recipes Practical Advice.......2004-03-09
I just got this book and ended up reading it cover to cover which I typically don't do for a cookbook! It just has so many good sounding, healthy looking, easy prep recipes for my family. She uses whole wheat flour and trys to cut down on white sugar but does not use ingredients that are hard to find.
My three little boys loved the honey mustard chicken and it was so easy that my husband who doesn't venture beyond making pb&j or cereal made it. Today I am having the leftovers with sprouts and hummus in pita. I think this is a good book for busy people interested in eating healthier not just at lunch but all the time. There are good ideas on how to recycling the odd amounts of leftover veggies and rice or pasta from dinner into great lunches.

Absolutely Laughable: the Worst Kid's Cookbook Ever--Hands Down.......2006-05-12
I went to the library looking to preview a couple of brown bag cookbooks so I could broaden the lunch selection at my house. "P B & J or Bologna and cheese?" Those are the current two options and I thought it might be nice to pack something different every once and a while. So not wanting to buy before I tried, I found this little baby in our online library catalog and tried it out.
It is, by far, the best laugh I have had all year. After fifty pages of nutritional dribble, the author finally starts the recpies. I mean, instruction is all well and good, but I don't need that much information on *lunch*. I just want to put something remotely nutritional into my kids bag that they will actually *eat*.
That leaves me to the hysterical bit. Here's the first recipe, I KID YOU NOT.
Peanut Butter Sproutwich
1/4 cup shredded lettuce mixed with alfalfa sprouts
1 tlb lemon juice
1 tlb toasted sesame seeds
1 tlb craberry sauce or relish
4 tlb peanut butter
2 slices date bread (and next comes the tasty part)
2 slices BACON, cooked crisp and drained
I know, I know!!! I couldn't stop laughing either! I pulled myself together just to lose it again on the next selection:
Peanut Butter and Tofu Sandwich
I'll spare you the ingredients. Next comes the best one of all, recipe number three, my personal favorite from the Peanut Butter selection:
Peanut Butter and Egg sandwich
2-4 tlb peanut butter
1-2 tsp pickle relish, well-drained (oh, I like mine runny, ya know)
1 hard-boiled egg (soft wouldn't do???)
salad greens (cause apparently you can't have peanut butter without greens)
2 slices wheat berry bread
All I can say is: LOL. LOLROF. LOLROFLMAO. No, that doesn't quite do it. LOLROFLSMTKCRTSIYHAS. (Laugh Out Loud Roll On Flor So Much That The Kids Come Running To See If You've Had A Stroke.) I mean, we live near Graceland and all and are required by law to know the ins and outs of a friend peanut butter and banana sandwich, but doggone it, even The King (gracious Southern boy that he is) wouldn't have said "Thankya, thankyaverymuch." with this in his bag.
So if you are in for a really, really good laugh (one of the best I've had all year) snap this baby up. The Seawich tacos (with raw cabbage, cocktail sauce, AND mayo) are not to be missed. Five stars for comedy. None for stuff kids will actually EAT.
A big help around the house.......2005-09-21
This book is an essential volume in our house. I agree with the previous reviewer that a lot of the suggested recipes taste pretty terrible, which is why I didn't give it 5 stars. But still, there are so many creative combinations, plenty of them taste good--the carob fudge is DELICIOUS, for example, and the peanut butter cups totally rock too--and the advice on things like how to wrap sandwiches for the freezer and how to make healthy ingredient substitutions are worth the price of the book. It's great; I use it several times a week and I almost always bring my lunch to work with me.
For ideas on how to pack creative lunches..........1999-06-28
The information and ideas presented in this book are basically flawless and oh so helpful. However, the big disappointment is in the recipes which are easy, yes, but unappetizing. I'm all for having an adventurous palate, but unless you're a pregnant woman with unusual cravings, most of the recipes will not appeal to the average adult, much less the average schoolchild. Still, if all you're looking for are ideas on lunch packing and presentation, it would be simple enough to substitute your and your family's favorite dishes.
