Have read all of the Cat books and enjoyed them all. Great books for unwinding at the end of the day.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful with a surprising end!!!.......2007-06-20

I listen to this series on cd on the way to work. The usual wonderful story line with interesting facts and goings on. The surprise ending was an extra treat. I love cats and the characters are great.

Oh what fun. Lillian Jackson Braun's Cat Who Mysteries are a Delight. The Cat Who Saw Stars is well written and holds your attention to the very last page. Quill, Koko and Yum Yum will win your heart. I Just Love Cat Who Books!

5 out of 5 stars I'm giving 5 stars because..........2006-12-03

so many others are giving this book a bad rap, in my opinon.
This was actually the first book in the series that I happened upon in the library (I listened to the unabridged audio version) and I found it entertaining and enjoyable enough to obtain and listen to all of the rest...so it isn't THAT bad!!!

None of these books are "great literature" or even "great mysteries". They are light, diverting, entertaining, "escape" reading. Who cares if the author (now quite elderly, I believe) is using a ghost writer?...if you have been charmed into enjoying the characters, and enjoy this kind of diversion, this book still fills the bill...in my opinion

3 out of 5 stars A Let Down for "Cat" Fans.......2006-11-20

In this, the twenty-first entry in this series Jim Qwilleran (Qwill) decides to take a vacation at his lakefront cabin in Mooseville. For those new to the series this cabin was the setting for Qwilleran's first adventure in Moose County when he first arrived there from a big city down below. Very shortly after his arrival a hiker disappears and suspicion falls on two of his friends. In the days of old this would have led to a full scale investigation with Qwill and his super cats working to clear their friend's names. In this instance however all that Qwill does is pay a couple of sympathetic visits to the suspects and follow Koko to a body. This is a mystery that is just left hanging and is never solved nor is there any effort to solve it.

Many faithful readers of this series insist that Mrs. Braun was replaced by a ghostwriter a couple of books back but I tried to convince myself that it wasn't so. Unfortunately after reading this entry in the series I have to admit that they are probably right. Not only is the first mystery never solved but then a second mystery is never really pursued and we only find out what happened when a guilty conscience forces a confession from a confidant of the killer. It must be said that the mysteries were never really front and center in this series but this book basically lacks any mystery at all.

On the positive side it was nice to visit again with the denizens of Moose County and especially the residents of Mooseville who only make appearances now and again. Despite the serious flaws to be found in this book the characters that live within it's pages are still able to make this entry a very enjoyable read. Koko is as smart as ever and Yum Yum is so adorable you just want to reach into the book and give her a great big hug. The fascination that the people of Mooseville have for UFOs is also a fun element of this book. These UFO sightings have long been a part of this series and this particular quirk comes to the forefront in this episode. Have you ever thought about the possibility that little green cats may be visiting us from outer space? If not, then the final chapter of this fun but not very mysterious book might just lead you to a close encounter of the feline kind.

This is my first and frankly my last attempt at reading a book by Lilian Jackson Braun up to now the only books that I could not stand were pulp romances. I have found a new can't stand book and this is it. I hope I never run in to the target audience. Because I do not like negative reviews I can say the binding is well made. The book is not too heavy. As a child, Rook had been taken in by the bards of Luly, and raised as one of their own. Of his past he knew nothing--except faint memories of fire and death that he'd do anything to forget. But nightmares, and a new threat to the island that had become his own, would not let him escape the dreaded fate of his true family. Haunted by the music of the bards, he left the only home he knew to wander the land of the power-hungry basilisk who had destroyed his family. And perhaps, finally, to find a future in the fulfillment of his forgotten destiny.

                5 out of 5 stars Muscial Writing.......2007-06-18

This book is absolutely poetic as far as fantasy novels are concerned. I love how the author turns the very act of creating music into a form of magic that can actively save or destroy. The ending was mice, as well, and a surprise for me, at least. For "young audience" writing, this is very good, and I would reccomend it to gifted children who are interested in fantasy. Where some books aren't up to scratch in the department of not talking down to the readers, this book is well written. I'm very impressed with "Song for the Basilisk" and I've put this author on my "Must Read More" list because of it. I can only hope her other works live up to the standards of this one.

3 out of 5 stars Not one of McKillip's best.......2005-06-20

I have recently read quite a bit of McKillip's books, and I have liked or loved all of them. This one, however, didn't grap me. First of all, there were far to many disturbing descriptions of fire, burned houses, burned people. Unless you are a pyromaniac, I really don't think you would enjoy it all that much. However, it does describe a city under the grip of a tyrant very well. I also found the plot a little confusing. Normally, McKillip's books are written about unusual ides, they make you think. This book was your typical revenge story, written in a McKillip style.

Caladrius's (He has many names, but we'll call him that here) family was burned by the tyrant ruler in the city. You see, there were four ruling houses, Caladrius was from Tormalyne House, which was fighting with Pellior house, ruled by the Basilisk. Caladrius is rescued from the ruins and spirited away to an island where he learns music. He tries to forget his past, but by the time he reaches about 40, he can no longer hide from it. He goes searching for his forgotten identity, finds it, and then goes back for revenge on the Basilisk.

The ending isn't really clear either. I was left with too many questions. If you are a veteran McKillip reader and like all of her books, I would still recommend this as a pretty good, if tiring read. However, if you are looking to try a Mckillip book for the first time, I would recommend something clearer and lighter, perhaps The Changeling Sea (my all-time favorite of hers). Happy reading!

4 out of 5 stars McKillip's prose is her music.......2004-08-31

While the plot may seem standard (exile comes back to his homeland to reclaim/set right his heritage), McKillip wraps original layers to move the story. Her understanding of music is solid from both sides-both Griffin's, and the teacher, Giulia. Ultimately, the greatest lesson of the book comes not from music, but from the one thing never covered in fantasy-the power of forgivness.

1 out of 5 stars What was she thinking?.......2003-11-16

I have been reading fantasy for 50 years, and this was one of the worst. Flowery literary style simply doesn't compensate for a plodding plot. Using a basic change of character to resolve the plot conflict is so amateurish, I can't believe it got published. A very definite "Save your money"

                5 out of 5 stars Melodious Story.......2003-07-14

I was hooked by the front art (very good one from Kuniko Y. Craft) but kinda hesitate because the story is about revenge (while I'm not looking to read about that!).

But, finally I gave it a try and... first, the rythmic sentence carried me into the story, second the unique and mystery of each character haunted me, and third, the end was unpredictable (in a charming way)!

Can't wait to read more of McKillips's. :)

                4 out of 5 stars Decent........2007-07-19

I like this cookbook. It is not quite as restrictive as some other candida diets, so that should be kept in mind for those searching for a way to conquer candida. Also, it is a cookbook, not a health book, so it does not go into great depth about candida, though it does offer some useful information. I would not make this my primary reference book on candida. I like the book for its simple, healthy whole foods recipes, though.

2 out of 5 stars Not So Accurate.......2007-01-05

This book really didn't help me much. The foods that are on the "allow" list are in actuality NOT allowed and can really set a candida patient back on their quest for health. I would not recommend to someone that is truly fighting this disease.

3 out of 5 stars Candidiasis ad infinitum.......2006-08-12

Of the large numbers of books on this subject, this one offered little new information. I did see a few recipes that appealed, but could have easily skipped this one.

5 out of 5 stars Candidia Albican Yeast-Free Cookbook, The: How Good Nutrition Can Help Fight the Epidemic of Yeast-Related Diseases.......2005-08-24

This book has helped answer many of my questions regarding Candida and has explained what I can expect as I go through the healing process. It is very informative in relation to diet and has good recipes to make the plain food we have to eat a little more exciting.

4 out of 5 stars Easy Candida Recipes.......2001-03-07

I thought this book was very helpful. What I liked most was the "rainbow meal plan" which listed the vegetables and meat combinations you could have on this diet at every meal. Because there are so many vegetables/meat combinations to choose from you shouldn't get bored. The plan also recommends steaming for all your food so it's easy to prepare - all you need is water, a pot and a steamer. The downside is you do have to chop a lot of veggies - however, it's worth it! I also had a hard time with another recipe which called for "Homemade Potassium Baking Powder" pg.83. In the recipe the book says to use potassium bicarbonate which can be ordered from a pharmacy. However, when I went to pick up my bicarbonate it had a skull and cross bone on the bottle and was rated somewhat toxic. When I talked to the pharmacist he said I needed to know what percentage of the potassium bicarbonate was called for because potassium bicarbonate is a strong base. Anyway I had no way to get that information so I skipped that recipe. So obviously the book should be more detailed about things like that. Yet even with this snaffoo I thought the book was helpful and still use most recipes.

Written by a James Beard Award-winning author who's also a writing teacher at the revered Culinary Institute of America, The Low-Carb Cookbook presents a colorful approach to the low-carb, high-protein diet so many people swear by. The author, Fran McCullough, has herself lost 60 pounds by following a low-carbohydrate diet, so you know you're in good hands. With more than 250 recipes, including appetizers, sauces, sides, main dishes, and delectable desserts, it'll keep you cookin'.

She's definitely taken a gourmet approach to the recipes. While they're all tempting, notables include Three-Grain Pancakes with Raspberry-Orange Sauce, Nut-Crusted Swordfish with Romesco Sauce, and Crème Fraîche Ice Cream. Unlike the many other low-carb cookbooks out there, McCullough gives advice for tracking down the best prepared food products and additional tips for healthy food preparation (for example, she recommends organic meat and dairy products whenever possible and cautions that "free-range" chickens are allowed to stick their heads out of their cages--not necessarily given the chance to frolic freely on the farm). There's also an interesting comparison of low-carb books, including Protein Power, Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet, and The Zone, which boils down to this: they all emulate many aspects of the Overeater's Anonymous recommended diet. But where the diet books that started the low-carb craze may not be all that original, The Low-Carb Cookbook certainly is, with its wonderfully creative and classy recipes. The perfect choice if you want to rise from a food-boredom rut or entertain for friends--and not let on that you're counting carbs. --Erica Jorgensen

5 out of 5 stars The Only Low-Carb Cookbook Worth Buying.......2005-12-11

The secret to low-carb dieting is to focus on what you CAN have and to have recipes that are so delectable and imaginative that you don't miss what you're cutting out. This book fits the bill exactly. McCullough draws from cuisines as varied as classic French, North African, Thai, Mexican, and American comfort food and the results would not be out of place in the finest restaurants. Yet for all their sophistication the recipes are unintimidating and easy to follow for the average home cook. In addition, you will learn many clever tricks for mimicking the foods you miss, from using oven-roasted eggplant slices in "lasagna" and "pizza" to superb cauliflower "potato salad" and divine blue-cheese flavored turnip "potatoes au gratin." Then there are the desserts. Yum. This cookbook is so good that I would use it even if I didn't eat low-carb. But as it is, I've lost 11 pounds in two weeks eating "dinner party" food that took little more time than broiling a piece of fish and making a salad. One of the best cookbooks in my collection of 50+.

5 out of 5 stars exquisite, well developed recipes.......2005-05-05

I love this cookbook! I know 5 stars is the highest rating. Here's why it has earned all 5:

                1) It's exactly what it claims to be: a low carb cookbook. Yes, some of the recipes are high fat, but it never claims to be a lowfat cookbook or a cookbook that works with any particular diet regimen like Atkins or The Zone or Sugarbusters or whatnot. It's wonderfully low-carb.

                2) Like a good cookbook should have, it includes a beginning section explaining where the recipes came from or how they came to be developed. The author is a foodie, so she took many of her favorite recipes or favorite restaurant foods and found techniques to make them low-carb. This section plus the section on special ingredients is the first 50 pages. The rest is recipes.

                3) Another good cookbook requirement: special ingredients are identified at the beginning of the chapter, with descriptions of how to shop for each one and there is a section indicating how to get them by mail order or the web in the back. Perfect for me because some of the ingredients were things I didn't know about or at least had never purchased before.

                4) Recipes are divided by section: starters, main dishes, side dishes, veggie dishes, desserts, etc. Some cookbooks go only by ingredient, which is confusing to me. I'd rather select a main dish and a vegetable dish rather than try to determine if the veggie dish is supposed to be a main course.

                5) Each recipe indicates the yield. Something not enough cookbooks do. I want to know if I'm making something for 2 or 8 or 10 people so that I can adjust the recipe as needed (by half or double) for my intended number of diners.

                6) Each recipe is well written. There is no wondering when to start each part of it. The instructions are step by step in order by time and most often the time between each step is indicated. Love that!

                7) The recipes are gourmet! Most of the low-carb cookbooks I have are SO BORING. Steamed chicken breast this, cottage cheese that. Not so in this lovely find. Here are some of the recipes: Thai style beef curry, Broccoli with toasted pine nuts, Baked chard with chiles, Spanish cream, Leg of lamb with a tapenade crust....

                8) If this were a new cookbook, the only ding would be that it uses the sweetener that comes in pink or blue packets rather then Splenda, which is a relative newcomer to the grocery store. Since this book isn't exactly new, I can't fault it for not using an ingredient that probably wasn't on the shelf at the time. For each pink or blue packet, you can substitute about 1.5 teaspoons of Splenda or sucralose and come out with similar results.

                9) For newbies to cooking, there are suggested menus at the end of the book - making it easier to decide what main dishes to pair with which vegetables and\or sides, etc. This type of planning is something that can be learned but takes time. It's nice that the author included this section for people that need a litle extra help.

2 out of 5 stars Low Carb, But High Fat.......2003-03-03

When I ordered this book, I was expecting something along the line of high protein, low carb meals with no more than 9-15 grams of fat per serving. I was disappointed to find that a majority of what the book was recommending was 28+ grams of fat per serving. I commend anyone that has lost 60 pounds on a diet, as I have lost over 100 pounds myself, but if you are wanting to look like a model from a fitness magazine, I don't think you will achieve such results on this particular diet. It does, however have some neat suggestions that you could modify to a lower fat version, and could be a very good diet plan if your doctor has told you that carbs are causing medical problems for you.

4 out of 5 stars Good, solid cookbook with realistic, do-able recipes.......2002-11-30

I found this to be not only a good source of realistic recipes, but a good read as well. I don't think I've ever before sat down and read a cookbook cover to cover, as I did this one. She's included a lot of recommendations on how to stock a good pantry for cooking and has included information on how to find all this stuff. However, be warned. A lot of the items she recommends are rather expensive; but perhaps this is ameliorated by the fact that a little often goes a long way. I especially love her blueberry syrup recipe - it is extremely easy to make and very convenient; and we find that when we make low-carb pancake recipes, the syrup doesn't soak in as much and so, again, a little goes a long way. I'm thinking about getting her other book as well...

                3 out of 5 stars Help!.......2002-11-21

I tried to make the little Parmesan cheese crispies that are found on page 126 and had a terrible time. It got all gunky and stuck to the pan. I had to pry it off with a spatular and almost ruined the pan. Has anyone else tried these? If so, please let me know how you did it if it worked well for you.
