Book Description
Andrew M. Greeley's bestselling sleuth meets The West Wing . . .Blackie Ryan gets a call from his friend, the newly-elected Democratic president Jack Patrick McGurn-whom the media has seen fit to call "Machine Gun McGurn"-but of course the call is interrupted by Blackie's boss, the autocratic Cardinal Cronin. Cronin, without consulting Blackie, sends him off to the White House to solve a poltergeist problem. Ghosts in the White House? Of course.Blackie encounters a great deal more than ghosts; an evil spirit out to get the President, a right wing conspiracy, and four beautiful women, any one of whom could be contributing to the mischief in the West Wing. How Blackie solves the problem of the ghosts and the conspiracy, and perhaps even finds a beautiful wife for the lonely, recently widowed President makes The Bishop in the West Wing the best Blackie Ryan novel yet.

Political but still entertaining.......2007-07-09
Greeley's political views come out a bit strong but the history is entertaining as is the story. I would not recommend this a your first Blackie Ryan Mystery, Begger Girl and Missing L Train are better.
The Bishop in the West Wing.......2006-02-28
Enjoyed the book, even though it was from the liberal standpoint. I am a big fan of Andrew Greeley.
Book of Bias and Hate.......2005-12-30
Like many, I have been a long-time fan of Father Andrew Greeley and especially his Bishop Blackie Ryan series. The good Father, however, has now betrayed the trust of his readers with this book of bias and hate.
Throughout the book, the author accuses Republicans (not some or a few but all) of being wealthy, corrupt, and crooks. He does not miss an opportunity to level an attack againsts all Republicans, even those who died well over one hundred years ago. One might expect that from a partisan book written by political lackeys. One expects more, however, from a novel written by a priest.
What is most disturbing is that a Catholic priest using a fictional Catholic bishop to directly and indirectly debase all Republicans leaves the impression that his views have the imprimateur of the Catholic Church. Unlike the ficitonal church in this book, the real Catholic Church teaches love and forgiveness.
While he condemns the demogogues of the religious right, Father Greeley has adopted the very same tactics of hate and bias which he supposedly deplores.
Perhaps Father Greeley should write future novels with the words of the first Republican president, Abraham Lincoln, who also hailed from Illinois, in mind: "With malice toward none, with charity for all."
This is one book which should not have been written. Or, perhaps it should have as it exposes the real Father Greeley.
disappointing!.......2005-05-24
Sadly, Andrew Greeley finally gets his wish, pushes Monica aside, and takes over on Bill Clinton...
silly story of a "vast right wing conspiracy" where Republicans, whites, conservatives, protestants...all evil, plot to blow up the white house, and plant ghosts to spook the new president.
Greeley's characters are straw men; light a match and watch them burn! ok, ok, I get it. Abortion, gay rights, stolen election, republicans are all killers, and Bill Clinton is god....we get your picture! what a silly, uninteresting story by an ego gone wild. Ridiculous cartoon like characters, including the southern politician who denounces all as "de-generates"---the transparency leaves little to the imagination...Even the NY Times, PBS, and Washington Post are all in on the vast right wing conspiracy because, as we all know, they are responsible for all the evil in the US and just disguise themselves as liberal.
Liberal or conservative, this book is a bore and is childish in its theme. Poltergeists in the white house, planted there by republicans to get back at bill clinton! Father Andrew has run out of ideas! At least we get all the token characters...
Ghost in the party machine. .......2004-11-21
Bishop in the West Wing has its charms, especially, I imagine, for Democrats right now. The ghost sub-plot is amusing, and the story moves well. The book compares favorably, say, to the Da Vinci Code, which it in some ways it resembles. Both are essentially works of mild, entertaining paranoia. Da Vinci unfairly makes the Catholic Church the working villain for most of the tale; Greeley directs his jabs at Republicans. Greeley does better at getting his facts straighter, in general. I was going to nail him on mistakes about China, but he didn't make many, apart from the unlikely premise of civil war.
My first Greeley book, the Book of Love, set up expectations that this volume overturned, however. For sure, Greeley's political subtext here -- wouldn't it be nice if red and blue got along? -- sounds great. But if "love hopes all things," how is it every Republican in this book turns out to be a fascist, dunderhead, or closet Democrat? (Or some combination of the three?) How realistic is it to have the Wall Street Journal advocate assassinating a new president? (For no evident reason.) And yes, it is a bit much for Greeley to dedicate the book to President Clinton, when the plot involves an ideal president who is falsely accused of indiscretions of which he is wholly innocent, egged on by a pernicious, blackmailing "Christian Family Union." I wasn't in the States during most of the Clinton years, but this strikes me as obsequious. To tell the truth, despite the recent political hysteria, a lot of the compliments Greeley paid his ideal president actually seem to me to apply to the guy we have now more than to Clinton.
Nor does Greeley make it clear why he thinks we ought to find the president's two foul-mouthed daughters so charming. In the old days, the Catholic Church demonstrated its lack of prudery by painting Sistine Chapels. Now Greeley does the same by having dim-witted 13 year olds talk dirty. I liked the old ways better.
Overall, despite the cheap shots and manifest lack of understanding directed at conservatives, I found the story moderately enjoyable.

Customer Reviews:
Not to be missed!.......2007-01-08
This novel ably demonstrates the considerable literary talents possessed by C. J. Henderson. It's as if H. P. Lovecraft pulled up a chair next to Mr. Henderson's writing desk and collaborated in the creation of this hardboiled supernatural mystery. The story: Teddy London runs New York City's number one private detective agency--well, he did until his office was destroyed by a storm conjured by demons. But Teddy's still in top-notch form, and his new client is a beautiful woman who is being pursued by winged monsters who plan to use her to allow them entry to a portal that will swallow the world in a maelstrom of madness. Teddy is prepared to do battle with the forces of evil, and mankind is dependant upon his victory. This is an ingeniously plotted whirlwind of a novel written with brio and peopled by unforgettable characters. Plus, this is the novel that introduces one of Mr. Henderson's most beloved characters, Lai Wan. Lai Wan is a psychometrist, which means she can read the souls of humans and the history of objects through tactile contact. When Teddy London realizes he needs help to battle the monsters threatening our planet, the beautiful Asian psychometrist, Lai Wan, is sent to join him in battle against the winged hordes. This is a thrilling supernatural escapade that leaves the reader breathless and eager for more Teddy London!

Creepy and hard to get.......2001-12-06
If you really like the science fiction horror genre, this book is worth reading. If not, spend your money on something else. The plot development takes a long time to get going, and ends abruptly. Also, the used versions of the book now sell for more than the original paperback.

The HeartMath Solution may easily be written off as a book too eccentric for widespread public consumption, and that's unfortunate. The title's a bit misleading--it's not about cardiac care and it's not about calculus, but rather how 30 years of research have shown that the heart's "intelligence" affects emotions and physical health--especially when it comes to handling stress--and specifically what you can do to balance heart rhythms, reduce stress hormones, and boost your immune system. Yes, it sounds complicated, especially when you read that cardiologists worked with physicists and psychiatrists to develop the HeartMath program. But it's worth brushing off your skepticism and exploring the concepts in the Solution, as many employees of Fortune 500 companies have already done.
The "intelligence" that the authors focus on refers to both the heart's "brain," or the 40,000 neurons found in the heart (the same number in the brain itself), and the intuitive signals the heart sends, including feelings of love, happiness, care, and appreciation. When such positive emotions are felt, they "not only change patterns of activity in the nervous system; they also reduce the production of the stress hormone cortisol." When there's less cortisol, there's more DHEA, the so-called fountain of youth hormone known to have anti-aging effects on many of the body's systems.
The HeartMath Solution outlines 10 steps for harnessing the power of the heart's intelligence, including ways to manage your emotions and keep energy levels high. One of the most important is the "Freeze-Frame" technique for calming the nervous system, improving clarity of thought and perception, and boosting productivity (which is one of the many appealing features for those Fortune 500 companies). Each step includes references to data proving its effectiveness, with handy summaries of the key points to remember at the end of each chapter. This is a book that takes a bit of scientific understanding and a lot of time to wade through, but one that could help you prevent stress from ruling your existence. --Erica Jorgensen

Spiritual Practices with a Secular Coating, I Think.......2007-08-23
This book offers three practices. The practices all begin with "breathing through the heart" and then apply the resulting state in various ways:
- "Freeze Frame" interrupts and redirects useless thought-feeling patterns
- "Cut-Thru" slowly or quickly dissolves longstanding problems
- "Heart Lock-In" allows one to rest in, and to share, profoundly good experience
Each of these practices ends with "listening to the intuition of the heart," which may give either insights or next steps to take.
All three work with "the heart," which seems to be both the physical heart whose rhythms can be measured and the experiential heart. Heartmath both works with subjective experience and measures it objectively. From that both-ness comes the surprising name, Heartmath.
I find from trying them that all three practices work. The Freezeframe interruptor really does break into unfortunate cycles of thought and feeling. CutThru does give an easing of long-term issues, though it does not undo them suddenly. And the unfortunately-named Heart Lock-In does seem to be a resting and recharging meditation.
The practices have all been tested empirically. The book is full of graphs of the results, and some of the studies has been published in journals. The authors have been careful to use business-language, speaking of the "efficiency" and "coherence" of different feeling states.
The language and the testing seem to be ways of making very old spiritual practices palatable to skeptical people of our time. Christianity, Judaism and Islam all understand the importance of the breath and the heart to the living being, and so do Hinduism and Buddhism. It appears the creators of Heartmath have translated old wisdom into new and practical forms for our times. Bravo to them!
Excellent idea.......2007-05-09
I find the idea of breathing through the heart extremely helpful in reducing the negative voice in my head. It also helps to get in touch with one's own feelings. Highly recommend it.
must buy!.......2007-05-07
we all have stress and anxiety and it's killing us slowly whether we know it or not. the heartmath approach to dealing with stress and anxiety is excellent. highly recommended for ALL! :)
An Answer to Many Questions.......2007-04-14
This is a very well thought out and presented book on the nature of the heart, and has many implications for the body/mind principle.
Someone mentioned that the authors did not provide research outside their own internal findings. That doesn't mean that the research is wrong.
Someone mentioned the focus on marketing their own products. I'm 80% done with the book and not one mention of buying any products, although I'm already aware of their personal biofeedback devices which by themselves have great value.
The information provided in this book will enable anyone to step back and reassess how they are responding and reacting to the world around them and inside them. It is a great first step for many of us looking to eliminate our reactions to the stress we experience, and is complimentary to every other form of self-help stress reducing techniques out there.
The hard part is, as with any type of improvement course, is to find the courage in yourself to take action and to actually PRACTICE the methods that may have benefit for you. And then to maintain that practice until you have reached the point it becomes automatic, and practice has become perfection.
If you have read or watched "The Secret" which has garnered worldwide media attention, then this book will answer many of the "whys" we are left with after being introduced to the power of intentions.
I have only tried to put into effect the techniques in the book for a few days and already have seen improvement in how my own stress is being handled. Granted, it will take many days and weeks, maybe months, to rewire my automatic responses to my outside AND inside world - but I'm confident that this little book will be a great roadmap in addition to all my other traveling tools.
A+

Helpful Camping Information.......2007-07-13
This book has a wealth of information for campers with all levels of experience. It will be a valued reference for us from now on when we plan to go camping whether it's for a weekend or longer. I will be interested in any other camping books written by this author.
Basic and Boring.......2006-11-22
The information in this book is accurate and presented clearly, but the techniques and recipes are extremely basic and boring. I won't need to refer to it for reference and thus won't be keeping my copy. Incidentally, no guidelines or plans are given for anything like the stone stove shown in the cover photo. Since that's such an attractive set-up, I think it's misleading to not include info on it in the book.
Good stuff!.......2003-02-02
I have quite a few cookbooks, and even more camping books. I would rate this as one of the better books I have read about cooking in the woods. The instructions are easy to follow and the recipes are delicious. There are about 200 tasty recipes total, and he uses camp stoves, dutch ovens, reflector ovens, and the fire itself. The book has advice on pans and what to pack. He shows you how to cook the meals for big groups and small alike. And there are plenty of fun recipes for kids and scouts in here as well. He shows you how to cook in foil to cut down on dishes and pans, and other timesavers.
He also shows you differnet methods to build fires, and how to make a few home-made grills and stoves economically.
If you only buy one camp cook book, this would be a good choice.
If you buy this title buy the one with the 2nd edition marker on it, it is much improved.
