Another very good Gunther........2006-01-02
Mayor really knows how to write an effective police procedural. He creates strong, realistic, interesting characters, including very good female characters. The sense of place and dialogue are excellent. I particularly liked the way the story builds on itself, revealing the clues and building to an excellent ending, which surprised me, and made me think. Each year, I look forward to his new book. This year he met, and exceeded my expectations.
Mayor offers up yet another winning installment in the Joe Gunther saga.......2005-10-24
Interviewing several citizens of St. Albans, Vermont in the aftermath of a barn fire in which a local farmer tragically perished, Vermont Bureau of Investigation officer Joe Gunther confirms that the conflagration was caused by arson. Additionally, he realizes that the fire, one of several in the region in the recent past, is part of a larger, more sinister pattern of events. Proceeding on the assumption that the blazes and several other odd occurrences are linked, Gunther begins to unravel a complex conspiracy--his travels in pursuit of the truth lead him across Vermont and, eventually, to the unfamiliar terrain of Newark, NJ.
The sixteenth novel Joe Gunther novel takes its place among the best of the nimble Mayor's works, exploiting and building on all the elements that have made the series such rewarding reading over nearly two decades. Surrounded by a substantial, well rounded, and captivating supporting cast, Gunther doggedly pursues the truth, no matter the cost. Along the way, readers are treated to subtle lessons in the culture and history of Vermont; they also get an update on the fictional people who populate Mayor's fictional version of Brattleboro, Vermont, people who doubtlessly have come to feel like real acquaintances to long time readers (many of whom, by the way, will no doubt be rocked by developments in this book). Mayor makes it all seem easy, delivering his tale in carefully measured prose, offering up yet another winning installment in the ongoing saga of reliable lawman Joe Gunther.
refreshing Vermont police procedural .......2005-10-20
North of Barrington, Vermont, everyone who knows seventeen years old Bobby Cutts likes him as he is a thoughtful caring person. That is except his girlfriend man-eating tease Marianne Koch, who thinks the do-gooder is pathetic, enjoys seducing him into crazy desire for her, and wants to date other boys. Upset with Marianne's latest liplock with another male, Bobby enters the barn, which soon turns into an inferno in which for whatever reason he fails to escape. Bobby and a herd of cows die.
Vermont Bureau of Investigation Agent Joe Gunther finds the case perplexing as there seems to be no motive.. No one seems to hate the victim or his family; in fact everyone speaks highly of the late teen. Yet, someone planned to kill Bobby. The clues lead Joe and his partner Willy Kunkle to Newark, New Jersey where the locals at first cooperate, but eventually tell the New Englanders to go home. Joe knows he has no authority in Jersey, but an arsonist must be stopped before someone else meets a fiery death.
The sixteenth Vermont police procedural is a terrific refreshing thriller because the women involved either in the investigation (a Newark cop, the arsonist's girlfriend; and two disgruntled unhappy farm wives) and Joe's girlfriend are incredible characters. The case is complex with obvious motive unknown and the opportunity having to be someone who knew the victim yet no one disliked him. Fans will appreciate Joe's latest tale as nothing in his personal life or on the job seems to go right.

A good read!.......2005-10-12
Joe Gunther is the lead investigator for the Vermont Bureau of Investigation. A simple barn fire turns into a murder investigation. Young Bobby Cutts picked the wrong time to check on a cow about to calf. It cost him his life.
And then there are other barn fires--that all seemingly accidental up to now, also turn out to be acts of arson. But why? And who? These questions lead Joe from Vermont to Newark, New Jersey and the mob. But getting a lead on a mob-connected arsonist isn't easy. They protect their own.
Meanwhile, Joe's girl friend, Gail Zigman, a Vermont State Senator, is getting threatening notes. She won't tell Joe because she believes they're related to legislation she opposes. But what if they're not?
Then there are those secret land purchases. Farms are being bought up in a pattern. But what does the pattern mean? Some of the purchases seem legitimate and some purchases happened after accidents and fires. And all of the purchases trace back to the same real estate office run by one of the area's most reputable men.
Joe and his sidekick, Willie, uncover the likely arsonist and find a connection to the land purchases, but in the process someone close to the arsonist gets killed and he vows revenge on Joe Gunther. He will hurt him in the same way he was hurt--and that means someone close to Joe is at risk.
Armchair Interviews says: This book has all the elements you expect in a first-rate murder mystery--several credible suspects, villains you love to hate, reluctant heroes, unplanned outcomes, and ultimately a surprise resolution. The book is well-paced and gives you plenty to think about as you enjoy solving the murders along with Joe Gunther.

Different Storyline.......2005-08-25
Catherine de la Fer is cursed like her relative Simone who we read about in Night Fires. Catherine has a different affliction- she is not a vampire. She is cursed with the Stigmata- she bleeds the wounds of Christ on her back and hands in the presence of evil. Her road to redemption and reclaiming her life is fraught with danger, intrigue and winning the heart of an unlikely hero.
Strong writing. Good visual descriptions and an novel premise make this a strong addition to any paranormal romance collection.
My favorite by Karen Harbaugh remains The Vampire Viscount ( SImone has a brief cameo in that one)
strong paranormal romance.......2003-12-31
In 1659 Paris, Sir Jack Marstone rescues the muddied filthy Catherine de la Fer from assailants. She remembers little of her past, but he provides her a safe haven while she heals at least physically. When she recovers from her injuries, he teaches her how to use a sword and other skills so she can defend herself. However, his kindness and nurturing cannot protect her from the nightmares she suffers from every evening.
Jack realizes he must escort his ward to her family and betrothed, the vile Marquis de Bauvin, but is reluctant to do so. Instead he feels a need to keep Catherine safe, something he believes would not occur if he handed her over to the Marquis, rumored to be an evil sorcerer. As Jack and Catherine fall in a forbidden love, they know that soon they will have to confront the sorcerer who plans to use her to obtain her family's supernatural powers that will enhance him to levels so superior to mankind they will seem like ants to be stepped on. Only Catherine the skilled swordswoman and her lover stand in his way.
Showing the width of her talent (to the chagrin of her Regency devotees), Karen Harbaugh provides a strong paranormal romance that hooks the audience because the otherworldly environs seems so real in the author's mid seventeenth century Europe. The story line is the classic good vs. evil theme with the twist being that one of the good guys (gal in this case) is slated to be the mate of the malevolent menace. As she did with NIGHT FIRES, Ms. Harbaugh enchants her audience with a dark tale lightened by the goodness of love.

A great supernatural romance for teens........2005-01-07
Garland and Coryn grew up in the same village. Although two years apart in age, the two were close childhood friends, and Garland loved Coryn from the first time she met him. Her dream comes true when she is thirteen, and Coryn tells her he loves her, too. Two years later, they are betrothed, and it is the happiest day of Garland's life, knowing that they will be married in a few years. But her happiness is shattered when Garland learns that Coryn's family is under a terrible curse. All the men of the family have died young. If Garland doesn't find a way to save him, Coryn will be next. Will Garland's love for Coryn be enough in her search to find the secret to breaking the curse? I highly recommend this book to teens who enjoy supernatural romances. Garland is an appealing character who readers will cheer on in her quest to save her beloved, and the story is very suspenseful.

Solving the mystery`.......2007-06-12
This book is a wealth of information whether you chose to follow it or stay within the conventional medical system. At the absolute least this book provides information to allow you to be in charge of your 'own' health care on this important issue. A best it can provide you with a safer and healthier natural alternative to unsafe and ineffective medications. I have bought 4 copies of this books and given it to people I care about.
Good advice, Bad heart (greedy).......2005-04-07
This book seems be based on research done by other doctors who do not own a supplement company.
I bought this book because I could not get good advice on supplements from my doctor.
The advice is very good, although copied, but the supplement advice points the reader toward the Whitaker Institute, which seem to do more research on how to sell vitamins for more moeny than research on curing heart disease
The supplements sold by Dr. Whitaker's company are much higher priced than the exact same supplements sold by other reputable supplement comapanies like Puritan's Pride, The vitamin Shoppe, Swansons vitamins etc.
I prefer other books on this subject sold by amazon, particulary one written by Dr. Houston, who runs a hospital research institute and does not own a supplement company.
I find it hard to believe the advice on supplements from a man who is charging triple prices for the supplements that he reccomends in his book.

Things your doctor never told you.......2005-02-26
Your doctor may have never told you that most blood pressure medicine is dangerous, that for some people, reducing salt intake and drinking more water is as effective as diuretics and much safer, and that in most cases hypertension is caused by an unhealthy lifestyle. This information, and much more, is backed up by 28 pages of references.
I have followed some of the guidelines for about two weeks and have already seen a decrease in both my systolic and diastolic pressures. I have not yet started eating tofu, and have not given up beef, but am reducing salt intake, choosing complex carbs over simple sugars, and eating fruit rich in potassium, calcum and magnesium. Some of the recommended changes are difficult, some are refreshing.
This book is intended for people who are "proactively involved in their health...and highly motivated to modify their diets and make other lifestyle changes..." It's not for everyone. It calls for changing eating habits and exercising regularly, as well as reducing stress. But even if one does not follow the book's advice to a tee, they can probably benefit from it.
I recommend Reversing Hypertension to anyone who needs to reduce their blood pressure, doesn't want to risk taking medicines that can be more dangerous than hyertension ,and is willing to make the necessary lifestyle changes.
Hypertension.......2004-12-25
A Vital New Program to Prevent, Treat, and Reduce High Blood Pressure by Julian M. Whitaker is an extremely easy to follow guide on hypertension, its reasons and effect on our body. The traditional medical establishment has very little clue as to what causes and what to do about many diseases. But, here the author knows his subject very well and is an expert in making the layman understand what he has to tell. Every person who is suffering from hypertension should read this book and their next visit to their doctors will be more enlightening.
After reading this book I have decided to give up my coffee habit and I was fortunate enough to find out a find a wonderful tasting replacement made from soyabeans. You brew like coffee and it even helps lower my cholesterol. I found it online at www.S o y c o f f e e.c o m. Gaining this understanding will effect every move you make from this point on and will bring with it the necessity to share it. I am sure, once you try this out, you too will never go for your normal coffee.
Full of good suggestions...........2004-12-02
Ever wonder about the mechanics of hypertension - what is it and how is it affecting your body? James Whitaker discusses how someone like me who worked out in the gym 3-4 times a week, has eaten right for years and had normal cholesterol readings could have a stoke. You could have knocked me down with a feather when it happened - and I mean that literally.
No one ever told me about aldosterone, antidiuretic hormone (ADH), Angiotensin II, or Nitric Oxide, or the role the renin-angiotension-aldosterone system(RAAS) played in regulating blood pressure. Seems there are at least two types of hypertension and that stress is a major factor that can affect your body and shorten your life. As I never used Cocaine, that must be the cause of my secondary hypertension and why my physician has prescribed an ACE inhibitor and a BETA blocker. (By the way, you might want to read this book for no other reason than to discover the danger of taking a BETA-Blocker with an anti-diuretic for an extended period.
Whitaker lists some controllable risk factors most of us need to know more about including obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes, diet, smoking and drinking. I have never smoked and I don't drink alcohol, and I am using a variant of the DASH diet (also discussed in this book). Living with smoker has probably affected (passive smoking - if you have kids stop for their sake!!). Read this book and learn more about hypertension, prescription drugs, and how you can lower your blood pressure, improve your memory and enjoy life again using various natural techniques.

Customer Reviews:
Coffee enthusist trying to learn more about describing coffee.......2007-03-21
The book is quite informative. I really have been looking for a reference that provides the scales for describing coffee: aroma, acidity, body, flavor and aftertaste are some of the standard descriptive categories and the descriptor for the extremes and midpoints of each category. I also wanted to see several coffees rated on these scales so I could calibrate myself to what muddy, complex, etc. really means. This was missing. My search continues.
FANTASTIC!.......2006-04-07
This book is absolutely amazing. It's so thorough. It takes you from the history of coffee to the way it is used today.
The way the history is written will hold your interest as they highlight and write in an entertaining way.
The book describes the process of getting the coffee beans, roasting them, and the way they are ground up. It uses great description in how the flavors are different.
Also, throughout the back of the book, there are TONS of different recipes from coffee drinks (hot and cold) to cakes, crepes, ice cream, and pies, along with many other recipes.
There are resources at the end of the book.
This is perfect for the kitchen, the coffee table, and especially a gift for the die hard coffee lover in your life. You'll learn more than you ever thought you could.
Everything you want to know about coffee.......2000-03-29
It is a very interesting book about the history of coffee, coffee around the world, the art of coffee drinking, and many recipes of cakes, pastries, in which coffee is one of the ingredients. There are many nice pictures in the book. The only thing I dislike is that there are some spelling mistakes.

Each large photo almost fills the page, with a couple sentences adding information and interest to these vintage photos. Excellent as storybooks, learning to read books, and homeschool or parent teaching about different cultures, through the children of different countries. Pretty cool. This is the story of Pedro and his family and friends.
