This was another enjoyable read; she introduces the reader to a character from Deborah's past, and a future character. The dialog is interesting, as well. Great continuation of a great series!

This book was 98% about the landscape of this region, and only devoted 2% to the plot and characters. Too bad, because I think Deborah Knott is a great character, but not used to full potential in this book. In fact, I was so bored that I couldn't even skim the book without yawning. Next time, write a travel guide instead of a work of fiction.
North Carolina resident enjoys Maron's books.......2003-07-21
As a somewhat recent resident of Raleigh (4 1/2 years, though that almost makes me a native), and lifelong mystery lover, I truly enjoy reading Maron's books set throughout North Carolina. I stumbled upon her Deborah Knott series at the library and have devoured the entire series in less than a year. (I rarely dedicate myself to one author or one series.)
But to correct Jerry Bull, this book is set on North Carolina's Crystal Coast, not the Outer Banks. It just so happens that I spent the weekend at the Crystal Coast while reading "Loons" and have spent some time at the Outer Banks -- they are two different areas of the coast.

We've noted before, both for this Judge Deborah Knott series (Loons = #3 of 8) and the earlier 8-book Sigrid Harald series, that Maron is a fine writer that can do wonders with anything to which she sets her mind and pen. We would probably rate this and the rest of the set higher were it not billed as a mystery. A murder or two occurs, but it seems nobody is chasing clues or suspecting anybody except in the few moments of idle thought Deborah turns to the subject. Then, all of a sudden, the murderer is revealed all too conveniently at the end of the book.
What we really have with this series is human drama, mostly about the rural life and lifestyles of the wonderful characters Maron gives us from all over North Carolina, this one set on the lovely, albeit anachronistic, Outer Banks. Her dialogue and imagery are quite enjoyable, and she does well in describing the societal conflicts between the old and the young. But it might be better to just take out the mystery rather than do it such poor justice (so to speak). Those used to the Harald series will be particularly upset, for in that set the crime and the procedural detection of the culprit were everything. In fact, we find it hard to believe Maron is winning mystery awards (per se) for the Knott stories. Even the courtroom scenes where we get to watch Knott judge mostly menial cases are pretty dry going. Frankly, Knott could be holding down almost any profession and these stories would still work.
These books will probably satisfy those not wanting or looking for much of a crime and solution motif; but those that are looking for plot complexity will be quite disappointed. We will probably forego the rest of the set as just a little too bland, even though the nice easy reading style will please many who don't care about intrigue, suspense, or procedure in their crime stories. Just be aware...

If your looking for new disciplines, rules and additions, then go somewhere else. If your looking for a dark look into the mind and motives of a Sabbat member; then this is your book. The Sabbat guide answers long awaited questions, and expands on this dark sect, without making you go back and recreate your character due to totally new rules. All in all, a good book.

This is absolutely a must book. Giving dogs prescribed medications often involves side affects which shorten their lives. Being able to find out about natural products that can help them is great. It can not only lenghten their lives, but also cost less in the long run. I highly reccomend this book to all dog owners.

this is a great resource book. It has lots of background info on dog foods and so much info on great supplements. It could be made easier with breakdowns or charts to guide you for quicker reference, because I find myself having to flip back and forth a lot. There is definitely lots of info and it has to be read more than once. I think the recipes are sound and easy to make. Although I can't cook for my dogs all the time, at least I can do it whenever they are ill or recovering from some ailment or surgery to ensure that their bodies are strong when they need to heal. This book makes it manageable to do that.
A great resource.......2007-09-23
This book is a great resource for pet owners. I find the health-care section of the book very useful. I have modified the recipes to accomodate the inherited allery issues my dog has. Modifying the recipes is a very involved process as the substituion of products recommended and appropriate amounts required for balanced nutrition can be a hassle to figure out, especially, if one's pet was allergic to multiple products.
This is a great book for pet owners who want to try homemade cooking and alternative medicine for their pets.
Excellent overall but diet not suited for all .......2007-09-01
There is more than one way to feed a healthy, non-commercial diet. I recommend buying both Dr. Pitcairn's book and Andi Brown's book, The Whole Piet Diet, to see which diet your animal(s) prefer. I have three pets, two 13-yr. old cats and one 1 1/2-yr old terrier. The cats had been eating holistic Blue Buffalo dry food along with some canned Friskies. The terrier was eating holistic Blue Buffalo dry food along with some raw meat, veggies, yogurt, etc. I recently learned that dry food is difficult for pets to digest and is terribly drying and causes digestive problems like vomiting, dandruff, etc. The Friskies is just plain junk food so I decided that I was going to feed healthier fare and bought both books (Dr. Pitcairn wrote the foreword in Andi's book). While Dr. Pitcairn promotes primarily raw meats with cooked whole grains, Andi Brown promotes cooked stews (grains included for dogs only, not cats). After experimentation, I found that my dog and one cat prefer Dr. Pitcairn's recipes and my second cat prefers Spot's Stew (from Andi's book). When I made the switch, I only started feeding the recipes without supplements to the cats. It took 15 days for them to eat consistently, then I started adding the supplements in small amounts and gradually built up to the daily recommended amounts. Tip: my cats preferred Andi's supplements over Dr. Pitcairn's (especially the essential fatty acids in the form of oils). All of my pets are doing very well on the diets but only because I was persistent in finding what worked best for each pet. I will never feed dry food again!
It's a shame..........2007-08-29
...that an obviously experienced and well researched vetrinarian would recommend a diet that includes grain as one of the staples of the diet. Anyone who does even a minor amount of research about the special diet needs of a dog would easily find that dogs do not possess the proper enzymes to break down grain properly and can lead to either minor or serious allergic reactions. Dogs should not eat any type of grain at any time. Anyone who reads this book, do not take it as gospel. Please do more in-depth research before you make any solid decisions on your dogs diet.
Besides that fault, there are only a few recipies included in this rather long book. I heard very good things about this book before I bought it and was thoroughly disappointed after I read it. Its hard to give this book anything else but a negative review.

Many people swear by this book, but I don't find it that essential. Most of the information was not especially useful or was common knowledge. Mainly I disagree with Pitcairn's use of grains in a dogs diet. Instead, I recommend New Choices in Natural Healing Dogs & Cats and The Nature of Animal Healing.
Hesitating to purchase this book.......2007-04-30
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a forum for questions that can be asked concerning Dr. Pitcairn's latest edition of his book, so I am
hesitating to purchase it. I own the 1982 edition and wonder if it has been updated as far as recommendations of diet- specifically foods that have been deemed dangerous to dogs and cats- as one reviewer mentioned, raisins. I have recently heard of onions and garlic included as dangerous foods for dogs and cats, and Dr. Pitcairn's earlier book is laced with encouragement for feeding them to our pets. As someone who is severely allergic to onions myself, I have learned that they lurk in MANY places and in various forms. Onion powder is just as detrimental for me as raw onion, and is found in chili powder and many other spice combinations, soy sauce, ketchup, mayonnaise, chicken broth, vegetable broths, bouillon, tomato sauce, even canned beans, especially the organic varieties. I avoid feeding anything that might contain these to my dogs. I wonder if the revised edition of Dr. Pitcairn's book includes cautions about feeding onions and garlic to pets? Since I cannot find an answer to my question without purchasing the book, I will continue to hesitate to do so.
The best book to improve your pets health and keep them healthy!.......2006-04-05
I can't praise this book enough. It has literally saved me hundreds of dollars in pet care costs and more importantly saved at least one of my pets' life. I've owned my copy for at least eight years. I have a Weimaraner with allergies which this book has kept her allergy free without the prescriptions recommended by the vet.
More recently I had a cat with a blocked urethra, common in male cats, which can also lead to a rapid and painful death if they are completely blocked. The emergency vet wanted $1500 to catheter and care for the cat for two days with antibiotics etc. I opted to have them do the catheter ($300) and took him home to care for him. I followed the books instructions. He did great right away by giving him the vitamins the book suggests and the prescription food the vet suggested. But after two weeks of being 100% well he started to have blood in his urine again, the first sign of the problem. Then I realized that I had slacked off on the vitamins the book suggests, (vitamin C, and some others). I had mistakenly assumed the "prescription" food would be good enough. I immediately gave him the books homeopathic remedy followed by the books recommended vitamins and their "Healthy Powder" (recipe in the book) and his problem cleared up the next day and he has had no signs of any problem since. He is in the best health he's ever known! And I'm being smarter about his needs.
If you care about your pets, believe in their own abilities to heal, and natural and holistic approaches to pet health, this book is the best; it's the one I go to first to find the answers to my pet's problems.
Inaccurate advice and some expensive suggestions.......2006-03-03
I read this book hoping to find another way to try and treat my dogs skin problems and with the interest to start feeding him more rare food (less kibble).
However this book tends toward more of an extreme view STRONGLY recommending only feeding your pet human organic food and bottled water (i love my dog but if I dont drink bottled water and eat organic food he doesnt need to). There were 3 "booster mix" recipes to add to a kibble diet that were okay.
The recipes seem expensive, especially if you have large dogs, but the ingredients are broken down and ordered by cost per protein gram on a handy chart.
The biggest flaws were the suggestions that we just inaccurate. For instance recommending dried fruits such raisins, when in fact raisins, like chocolate, grapes, and alcohol are toxic to dogs. PLEASE DONT FEED THOSE TO YOUR DOGS!!!! Inaccuracies like that make me question the validity of the rest of the book. I would recommend double checking any advice from this book before following it.
One of the best.......2006-02-05
This is one of the best books on the market that cover natural care and feeding of dogs and cats. It includes balanced recipes complete with easy to make supplements, and a wealth of information on how to care for all sorts of issues and problems the natural way. I strongly recommend having a copy of this book on the shelf for any pet owner.
I have owned two copies of Dr Pitcairn's book ... both the first release, which I simply wore out and, when it was re-released in the new edition, I bought a copy of that as well.
If you're considering purchasing this book, don't hesitate any longer. You won't regret it.

Easy, healthy, unique breads from around the world.......2006-09-27
Having recently relocated to San Antonio and finding a lack of bakeries, I purchased a Cuisinart convection breadmaker. Although the Cuisinart CBK-200 comes with a decent set of recipes, many are laden with fat (with 30% or more of calories coming from added oil, butter, nuts, etc.) and sugars. I try to eliminate oils, fats, sugar and salt from my diet, so I was looking for a healthier alternative to home breadmaking.
Enter The Best Low-Fat, No-Sugar Bread Machine Cookbook. Added fats have been replaced by lean, fruit- and veggie-based alternatives such as unsweetened apple butter, applesauce, minced prunes, and mashed sweet and white potatoes. Sugars such as molasses and honey are replaced by dried fruits (raisins, currants, cherries). Sun-dried tomatoes, zucchini, corn, carrots, kale, and onions are among the many veggies that make a guest appearance.
Although I was doubtful that these healthy, lean (less than 5% calories from fat) breads would be tasty, I have tried three loaves thus far and all were sensational. My first loaf was the Butternut Squash and Balsamic Vinegar loaf (page 51). I substituted canned pumpkin for the squash and dried cherries for the raisins, and the loaf was pleasantly sweet, with an orange color but not an overwhelmingly pumpkin-y taste.
My second loaf was a breakfast bread (Oat and Raisin Bread, page 35). Although I only made a one-pound loaf, the bread was so light and airy that it was nearly as big as a large loaf. Both the Butternut Squash and Oat and Raisin bread are delicious toasted in the morning.
My third loaf was made to accompany soups: lentil bread, with a hearty helping of cooked lentils and Mediterranean flavors courtesy of sage and sea salt. Denser than the first two breads I baked, the lentil bread is a savory, hearty accompaniment to soups and sandwiches.
Although one reviewer mentioned a disasterous loaf of zucchini bread, I am brand new to breadmaking (my first loaf ever was from this cookbook) and have had nothing but success. It's important to add ingredients in the order recommended by your breadmaker: usually liquids first (at room temperature, except for water, which should be between 80-90 degrees), then flours and seasonings, and finally the yeast. The directions are straightforward and easy to follow. Several breads require finishing in the oven (low-fat challah, whole wheat baguettes, pitas). Besides low-fat, no sugar added recipes, the book also includes a chapter on salt-free breads (but not gluten-free).
The Best Low-Fat, No-Sugar Bread Machine Cookbook Ever truly lives up to its name. Although over ten years old, the recipes work beautifully with my brand new, circa 2006 bread machine. Thankfully, the ingredients are fairly common, with some alternative grains and flours (amaranth, quinoa, barley, rye) called for to add variety. I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves bread but is looking to lighten up on refined sugars, oils, and salt; these recipes offer all of the taste with none of the guilt.

I have tried two different recipes now. Even though the recipes are for 1lb and 1.5lb loaves (and I make 2lb loaves), I just double the 1lb ingredients, and everything has turned out fine.
I'm looking forward to trying more of the recipes.

I tried this book for the first time and used recipe for Summer Zucchini bread on page 90. It was a disaster. I felt there is an error in this one because it only called for 1/3 cup of water for large loaf of bread! I followed this one to the letter and the result was a hard clumpy mess. I'm an experienced bread maker user and this was a huge disappoint.

I have had tremendous success with this book and the other ones in the series. I don't know if the recipes are just well-suited to my National/Panasonic machine or what, but I have NEVER had a failed recipe in the batch. Granted, the author always suggests to add ingredients in the order that is recommended by your machine, so I suppose a good working knowledge of your bread machine is a must. I especially liked this book and the subsitutes that it has for sugar. I highly recommend this book.

Error in ingredient amounts.......2003-04-15
I tried the Hot Cross bun recipe. Following the amounts listed in the recipe yielded a dough with the consistency of a batter. Comparing the amount of liquid in this recipe to other hot cross bun recipes showed that there was considerably too little flour or way too much liquid in this recipe. I added about 9 T. extra of flour and the batter was still too wet. I also tried the brioche recipe and it was also much too wet. Very disappointed in either the recipe tester or the editor.

All bread machines are not created equal, and perhaps that is the reason for the variance in star-quality in the reviews for this book.
I have a difficult machine--an upright that does not handle whole grain recipes very well. This book saved the day! I was about to give up on making wholesome, whole-grain breads when a friend passed this on to me. I have not used another book since. I've also found that the more unusual and adventurous recipes the book offers, as well as the more traditional recipes, can easily be tweaked to fit with the ingredients I have on hand or that suit the tastes of my family.
If you have daring taste buds and want to learn the ins and outs of your bread machine, this book is for you. I would recommend it to anyone!
The BEST EVER BreadMachine Cookbook.......2000-05-02
I have had this book for nearly eight years and I keep going back to it. No matter how many other books I get THIS IS THE ONE I USE. When my sister got her bread machine I told her she HAD to have this book. The recipes are well written, the varity is incredible, the suggestion for use are true to the bread type and the ingredients are easily found in your regular grocey store. Yet the book covers a wide varity of breads and sweet dough. I LOVE IT.

I had high anxiety about ordering this book after reading some of the online reviews, but fortunately, every experience I've had with this cookbook has been fabulous. Every recipe turns out a moist, delicious loaf. The recipes that came with my bread machine made much drier bread that went stale quickly. Not so with these recipes. This book calls for ingredients not normally on my shelf, but the results are well worth it. This is fast becoming my favorite cookbook.
Easy to make and excellent variety of recipes.......1999-11-19
This book is a tremendous joy to have and use. Since I purchased it I have made a different recipe each week and brought the bread to work to share with my colleagues. If I miss a week they remind me that they are waiting for my "treat". Easy to find ingredients and simple instructions make these recipes a breeze for even the most novice of bakers. The helpful hints in the front of the book are a nice touch! I have not made a loaf that was not spectacular.
