Book Description
In the world of antiques dealing, there are minor calamities...like accidentally selling a rare engraving for $170 instead of $1,700. And then there are worse tragedies -- such as the chain of suspicious deaths among dealers in the weeks prior to the Rensselaer County Spring Antiques Fair. For Maggie Summer, owner of Shadow Antiques and an antique print expert, the threat of murder is far from her mind as she displays her treasures at the prestigious show. Though rumors abound, security is tight, and Maggie has been in the business too long to be easily rattled, she can't help observing her colleagues with fresh eyes. And when sudden death claims a victim in their midst, Maggie will race to stop a killer -- if she can distinguish those she suspects from the real deal.

The most recent victim, John Smithson, died of poison at a show just last week, and many of the same dealers are here at Rensselaer. They make the identical circuit year after year, so they know each other well. Or do they? Murder is still far from Maggie's mind as she arranges her Shadows booth: some Currier

gotta love antiques.......2006-06-25
I've waited too long to start this series by Lea Wait - featuring a part-time antique print seller and college professor Maggie Summer. Maggie travels to antique shows all around the north-eastern area of the US in between teaching semesters. When one of Maggie's fellow antique dealers dies at their latest show, Maggie struggles to prove the innocence of a friend, and herself, as well. Subtly romance is blooming for Maggie with Will Brewer, but Maggie gets distracted when another dealer dies - and she wonders, could Will be the killer? With only a weekend to solve the mystery, Maggie manages well to close the case before everyone departs for their next show. I've enjoyed the storylines, and am envious of the northern fare. I've learned bits & pieces about prints, and regret some of the book donations I've made!
A great series!.......2006-06-18
I discovered this series mid-series, but have gone back and read all the books now. This is definitely a fun series, a combination of murder, prints and history. Maggie is a very likeable and fun character with a lot of depth for a murder mystery. Definitely a series worth reading!
Another great antique print mystery.......2006-03-15
Recently widowed Maggie Summer is participating in the Rensselaer County Spring Antiques Fair. She owns Shadows Antiques.
There have been some deaths of antique dealers, so everyone is on edge. Security has been hightened for the show as well.
Many of the same dealers who were at the show where John Smithson died of a poisoning last week are at this show. The dealers make the identical circuit each year and seem to know each other well. But do they really?
On opening night there is another death. The show goes on, but Maggie spends almost as much time investigating as she does selling antiques. She is determined to help prove that her friend Gussie's nephew Ben, who has Down's syndrome, is not the killer. Hardest part is trying to prove who is. She can't believe any of these people that she knows could be a killer.
I really enjoy this series. Maggie is such an enjoyable character. The interspersing of information about antiques really moves the story. I found myself having trouble putting the book down. I'm not an antiques enthusiast, but the way she weaves the story and the antiques information together really makes it interesting.
I highly recommend this book and the whole series.

Refreshing and interesting..........2006-01-11
If you are looking for a refreshing cozy with interesting facts, Shadows at the Fair is for you. The mystery was not hard to figure out but I did enjoy getting there. I fully intend to read the other books in this series simply because they are enjoyable to read.
Antiquing murders.......2004-03-26
The first in the Anique Print Mystery is an exciting beginning. Maggie Summers, recently widowed, is back selling her antique prints at the Rensselaer County Antique Fair. (Initially that's why I bought the book, because of the name of the county and the name of my town. Am I ever glad I did.) Maggie is happy to be back selling her wares to take her mind off her husband's recent death and discovery of his philandering. But soon a murder of an antique dealer and then his wife, has her searching for clues to clear a friend's nephew and to find the true murderer. The inside look at the antique fair business is interesting. Those who watch the Antique Roadshow may find this of interest.

Meticulous research........2000-12-26
The author visited and studied megalithic sites all over Europe, the Near East and North and South Americas. By careful measurement and observation he illustrates astronomical alignments built in to these sites. Black and white photos and drawings abound. This is a clear, thorough and extensive survey of archaeo-astronomy. He misses some alignments that later work has uncovered, such as the Venus alignment at Newgrange (Uriel's Machine by Knight and Lomas), but this book does justice to an interesting field. A must read for people interested in the civilizations of pre-history.

Book Description
This book offers a rich and highly original treatment of Plato's views in the areas of epistemology, ontology, and ethics. Moravcsik rightly encourages us to be open to the idea that the study of Plato is valuable not only for historical reasons, but also based on what it can offer to us in our continuing reflections on pivotal topics such as the nature of human flourishing. Moravcsik's book is essential reading not only for those working in Greek philosophy, but also for anyone who is interested in exploring key approaches to enduring philosophical and human concerns. Susan B. Levin, Smith College. Plato and Platonism reviews the nature and limits of Platonic interpretation. The book begins with a discussion of Plato's conception of what a genuine rational discipline (a 'techne') should be. The author shows how the recollection theory of understanding, the Forms as ultimate explanatory factors, and Plato's ethics of the right human ideal, all grow out of conditions that are essential to the genuine 'technai'. Moravcsik goes on to demonstrate how questions about the explanatory power of the Theory of Forms, mainly emerging not from naturalistic or empiricist qualms but from deep reflections on Eleatic doctrines, led to elaboration and modifications in Plato's ontology. The author reveals that the clearest echoes of the basic Platonic explanatory pattern linking elements of reality may be seen in some of the work on the foundations of mathematics and the related concern with the Eleatic challenge, rather than the 'realism' of general analytic philosophy. The author also shows how different Plato's basic ethical questions are from those preoccupying modern philosophy, and what Platonistic ethics might look like today. Students, academics and researchers will find that Moravcsik's careful and rigorous analysis offers an understanding of what Platonism in our times would have been like. The book leads us to an appreciation of genuine Platonism, rarely discussed today.

Do you want to know what Plato is really saying?.......2002-11-14
If you want to know exactly what Plato meant this book is for you! This book is for those who want to know what Plato said and not what people like to interpret him as saying. This scholarly work dives deep into the Platonic soul and truly grasps what Plato was thinking and why he was thinking it! Highly recommended for those doing any papers or disertations on Plato's conceptions.

Don't waste your time, energy or money ..........2007-08-14
I have to admit, I was a fan of Mary Summer Rain's earlier books, and I have this book in my collection (purchased many years ago). As I read each "ceremony," I wasn't into all these "star vehicles," "crystal use," etc. It is easy for MSR to say these chants were from one branch of the Anasazi -- that way she cannot receive as much criticism from the Pueblo Indians.
As far as who knows what kind of ceremonies were done back then, there is such as thing as oral history. We did not write down our history, but told them verbally, which is why stories, legends and HISTORY, continue to live until this day. The Yonega has rewritten much of Native American history, but it is now our turn to tell the truth.
I agree with previous reviews -- MSR is a new-ager who has snowballed many people throughout the years. This is why she has shifted to writing fiction (wait -- she's been doing that for years)!
I never had regarded her as Native American, she doesn't really know -- she claims to a nation (Shoshone) but I wonder if they readily accept her.
Stay away from her writings, unless you don't mind reading fiction. AS for me, if I like the book, I go back and read it from time to time. I still have the book, but I haven't read it in over 10 years.
Can I vote 0 stars?.......2005-08-31
I have to echo Joseph's review and warn people to stay away from this book as well as any other books by Mary Summer Rain. The author has taken claims to a heritage that she knows nothing about. This book sells romanticized "spirituality" and is a fictional collection of Anasazi beliefs and chants, and should not be considered a true account.
On this book not being about "anything ancient"........2004-03-05
I am writing for two reasons: One, simply to say that this is a beautiful book about what I feel deep in my heart is quite historically accurate.
Two, in reference to one long review that attacks this book as being pretty much a lie. The reviewer should have paid more attention to the book's repeated mention of these chants and customs being associated with a particular Anasazi CLAN, not the entirety of the Anasazi people over centuries. Does the reviewer believe that he/she, or any pueblo for that matter, knows what went on with every CLAN of people back then?
It doesn't really matter. You are either positively affected by this book or you are not. If you have the slightest ability to read with an open heart and mind -- which should, by the way, help you see more clearly -- you will probably get what Mary Summer Rain is trying to say with the book: plain and simple truth. She does this abundantly in all of her other books, and I count her work, including Ancient Echoes, as among the most enlightening literature I have ever found.
Very resourceful book...............2000-04-05
This book, the many chants ect. are beutiful! If nothing else, they are very calming, soothing and interesting.I felt as if I was taken back in time,to a place very far away.To a wonderful place with extradinary people.Mary summer rain has the remarkable ability to captivate her readers with profound wisdom bought forth in a simple, easy to understand manner.Like so many of her other books ,this is a book you will read over and over.I highly recommend it.
Ancient Echoes is not about anything ancient.......2000-03-08
Claiming to contain the wisdom of the Anasazi, Ancient Echoes, is a disappointment. There is nothing ancient in the ideas expressed. Indeed, most of the ideas expressed are New Age ideas with no connection to the Anasazis, who were the ancestors of today's Pueblos. I found this book insulting to anyone who cares about the heritage of the Pueblos or bout prejudices European-Americans maintain against Native Americans. The Pueblos hold that they are the descendents of the Anasazi and that the "Ancient Ones" never vanished. Scholars have long recognized the same. The National Park Service that maintains Anasazi archaeological sites at places like Mesa Verde, has also long recognized the link between Anasazis and contemporary Pueblos. Yet, this book ignores this knowledge in favor of the author's whim. Mary Summer Rain claims to have received the chants and prayers of the Anasazi through "spirit memory recall." However, the information this technique brought her does not square with the information Pueblos themselves give or with the information archaeologists can verify. Her chants bear no relation to Pueblo religious practice and her description of Anasazi society contradicts what is known for certain about the Anasazi. The "Anasazi" ceremonies suggested, like the Phoenix Dance, have never been known among the Pueblos. Indeed the very suggestion that this dance was held "twice a year" (p. 125) goes against Puebloan practice (see Alfonso Ortiz, The Tewa World, 1969). Similarly, there is absolutely no evidence that the Anasazi were enamoured with crystals, (pp. 98, 134, 144) that women were "welcomed into the Hunter Society" (p. 22) or that they traveled about in Star Vehicles (pp.118, 188). This book should be classified as fiction, or as a treatise on New Age thought. In no way should this book be taking as a serious portrayal of Anasazi life. Indeed, it perpetuates many stereotypes Europeans have long held regarding Native Americans disregarding the appeals of Native American scholars that non-Indians stop using Indians to legitimize their own beliefs.

good information about daily life.......2000-06-17
The book is a slim volume depicting in vivid detail the daily lives of the Ancient Egyptians. A crucial component of this presentation is the marvelous 120 colour plates strategically located to provide a balanced effect and overview. Nothing escapes the author's keen grasp : the Terminal Predynastic, the Early Dynastic with the continually evolving social structure, the economic basis of the country, agriculture, the rise of the necropolis and the funeral cult estates, and how all these factors combined eventually to bring about the downfall of the Old Kingdom. The author demolishes the popular misconception that this was a dictatorial period. It is a creative work for all and serves as a valuable introduction to the beginnings of Ancient Egypt.

Living the Sky: The Cosmos of the American Indian

Product Description
All over the world, through countless centuries, people have looked skyward for inspiration and guidance in their lives and activities. How vast this heavenly influence was, and how awesome the human achievements it engendered were, are illuminated in this extraordinary work of investigation and discovery. With hundreds of illustrations and photographs, Echoes of the Ancient Skies is a sweeping look at the world of archaeoastronomy from the prehistoric megaliths of Stonehenge, to the medicine wheels of North America, to the Aztec "Calendar Stone." The intriguing field of archaeoastronomy- the study of ancient peoples' observation of the skies and its role in their cultural evolution- seeks to explore the "universal evidence that people have used astronomy as the model for injecting order and predictability on their behavior and on life." Examining this phenomenon, Dr. E.C. Krupp takes the reader to sites throughout the world (most of which he has personally visited)- from Egypt, China, Babylonia, and Greece, to Turkey, Scotland, Wyoming, and Mexico. He interprets the significance of celestial observation and its relation to the earthly experiences of our ancestors, from practical applications of farming and the measurement of time to philosophical queries into our particular place within the universe. He goes on to cover such fascinating topics as how we see the seasons in the sun and stars, possible ancient and prehistoric observatories such as the megalithic monument at Kintraw in Scotland, and sky gods and myths around the world and throughout history- from the Egyptian goddess Nut to the myth of Phaethon and the golden chariot of his father Helios. This edition also includes a new introduction that brings the research completely up to date. A fascinating and authoritative exploration, this around-the-world survey shows how the sky was woven into virtually every aspect of civilization and opens our eyes to the powers that shaped the human past

A good introduction.......2005-05-03
This was the first book I ever read on Scandinavian religion/history/culture. It's written by a prominent scholar on the subject, who is well known for his translations of numerous Icelandic sagas.
I liked this book because it presents the reader with a researched/educated understanding of the topic, through the author's knowledge of the archaeological findings, historical records, sagas, and mythology. It is a good introduction as it doesn't get too deep but it gives a good overview of the history of the Scandinavian culture and religion during the Viking Age.
This book (at least, the one which I read) is large in height and width but shallow in depth. As such, it has some beautifully large illustrations and photos of Viking Age treasure, jewellery, boats, etc...]
This book also dispels a few widely held misconceptions about the Vikings; such as the horned helmets that they were thought to have worn during battle (this is how most people have depicted them during the 20th century). In reality, the horned helmet was only ever found on figurines dipicting certain deities; there has never been archaeological findings of actual helmets in this form.
The things about this book that I thought could be better:
The book focuses chiefly on the Viking era, but includes a brief history leading up to this period of time. I read this book from my local library hoping that it would cover a larger span of time and also hoping to find comprehensive information on the pre-Christian religion of Northern Europe. Instead, I got an all-rounded approach which included not only an insight to the religion but also a lot of info about daily life (e.g. farming, building, diet etc...), history, and general culture (ethic, virtues, beliefs, worldview,). As it turns out, there isn't a lot of info about the pre-Christian religion before the Viking Age that is known to the world anyway.
I found parts of it a little hard to read at times, such as the story of Sigurd and I got a bit lost with the storyline, since I'd never heard it before. A second or third read through these parts cleared things up for me.
Anyway, a good book as an introduction to Viking religion, culture and history with some really good photos. I recommend it. If it's not in print, then look for it in a local library.

Customer Reviews:
Nothing new, but still good advice.......2007-10-10
This book is easy to read and informative. However, you can find most of the same information in parenting magazines or online. I bought it at a time when I thought my son would never be potty-trained. It was good reassurance to have this book on hand. Frankly, none of the advice actaully helped me to potty train my son. It just made me feel more in control of the situation. Eventually, I just realized he had to do it at his own pace.
Simpe, yet effective.......2007-06-30
This is great book for first time moms, especially...don't get frustrated just follow the steps and don't give up. It works!! Good gift for a baby shower.
Early advice.......2007-04-11
I think this is a great book to read before you even consider potty training...like when your child is 1 1/2, but if you are in the midst of training and looking for more specific advice, skip this book.
Just Okay.......2006-11-10
The first chapters of the book are helpful, telling you how to begin potty training. After that, it discusses several options for different types of training. It does a good job discussing the pros and cons of each type but in the end, I was as confused and overwhelmed as I was before reading the book. I was looking for a book with a whole plan of action so that is why I say this book is just okay.
A basic book for training older children.......2006-05-25
This book might be most helpful if you have a 3 or 4 year old and you are just starting the process as it states that is the age when children are logical and goal oriented. It's not really a step-by-step guide as the back cover states.
