5 out of 5 stars simply the best.......2005-04-25

This book is not only the best MIPS book I have ever seen, but also one of the best computer system books I have ever seen.
I only hate I didn't discover that earlier!!

It has everything a curious system software engineer wants to know about everything related to MIPS. If you have mastered all that this book offers (I wish I can say that in some near future), you not only undoubtedly become a MIPS expert, but also you are at least half a Computer systems expert in general.

5 out of 5 stars this is the MIPS Bible.......2002-07-11

Excellent book for MIPS. Read this first then
use the official documents from MIPS or your
MIPS cpu vendor. If you are an embedded programmer
learning MIPS or bringing up a MIPS system this
is your bible. The code snippets are extremely
useful also.

5 out of 5 stars Good steamcourse and reference.......2001-08-29

If you are looking for a book which gets you up and running with MIPS then look no further. This book explains its history and everything you need to know to start `messing around' with the MIPS RISC CPU.
The author also provides a lot of `gotchas', which he learned from prior experience from developing on/with the MIPS CPUs. Valuable insight in those little things which will ease your life as a developer.
Aside from the info provided by the author on the MIPS CPU itself, it also explains a great deal about basic processor technical knowledge, thus making the book a breeze to read for those of us with no extended experience in CPU internals.
Like one of the other reviewers said though, for a real reference with regard to the mnemonics and other instruction related things you might want to get the PDF files from the mips.com site and use those next to your See MIPS Run book.
They supplement each other well.

5 out of 5 stars Get this book!.......2000-09-06

This is an outstanding book that is written by an author who knows his stuff. It covers a lot more material than just the MIPS architecture, although if that's what you're looking for, it's THE best MIPS book, and I have them all.

Sweetman THANKFULLY covers many topics that aren't unique to MIPS, such as pipelines, caches, memory management units, floating-point processing, etc... in addition to going into great detail specific to the MIPS variants.

The sign of a very good engineer/author/technical writer is someone who takes something that is complicated and involved, and makes it easy to understand. Sweetman is such an author.

On top of all that, the book makes for enjoyable reading and has a very conversational/friendly tone (but don't get me wrong, it is quite in-depth and technical.)

If you're working on any RISC architecture, including other variants such as PowerPC or ARM, this book is for you.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not practical.......2000-06-05

I like the content. I hardly can use the book as a reference because it is missing a convenient section with mnemonics and their effects like you can find on other programming manual (I love the PowerPC one from IBM.) The succint part where the mnemonics are given is too small and not complete. Therefore I have to rely on some other manuals to understand precisely the output of the processor functions on its various registers. The book gives a good insight at MIPS architecture including VM and examples and pretty much everything is covered here. I wish the examples would have an extra column with the hexa values of there instructions counterpart to give some info on the way instructions are built.

Take a long voyage deep into the 18th century with Colleen McCullough, a novelist for readers with a big appetite for historical slices of life. In Morgan's Run, her mild-mannered hero is a Bristol tavern owner's son with a God-given gift for crafting the Brown Bess flintlock musket. This is handy, because England plans to employ it to put down the mutinous American colonies. McCullough knows this firearm right down to the last flange and frizzen spring--how its .753-inch ball shatters bones and butchers bellies and how you have to work up a mouthful of spit, then bite the paper containing the powder to moisten and rupture it before firing. And like a master gunsmith, McCullough assembles all the elements necessary to give the novel flash and impact: rogues and heroes, salty dialect, period detail, vicious intrigue, comic relief, betrayal, and unexpected romance.

She also knows just how her master of the crafts of tavern-keeping and musket-making would fit into the vast mechanism of history as the American victory wrecks Britain's economy and forces the crown to send convicts elsewhere. Richard gets a job with a rum distillery, but his sharp-eyed efficiency undoes him: one day he finds "a number of pipes hidden among festoons of spider-web," one of which is diverting 800 gallons a week to dodge taxes, a hanging offense. He unwisely reports this, which lands him in a net of corruption. Soon he is sentenced to various convict ships anchored in England, and then to a slave ship bound for Botany Bay in the new penal colony, Australia. But save your pity! Richard rises to the terrible occasion. "Prison had given him a star to steer by, and his own will had swelled sails he did not even know he possessed."

Though McCullough doesn't quite reach the literary heights of Patrick O'Brian's Master and Commander or Robert Hughes's The Fatal Shore, she shares some of their virtues. Morgan's Run is a good old-fashioned adventure novel with the unflagging energy and raffish cast of an action movie. She considered calling it Morgan's Dirty Dozen, and it would have lived up to that title, too. --Tim Appelo

Book Description

Colleen McCullough captivated millions with her beloved worldwide bestseller The Thorn Birds. Now she takes readers to the birth of modern Australia with a breath-taking saga brimming with drama, history, and passion.

It was one of the greatest human experiments ever undertaken: to populate an unknown continent with the criminals of English society. For Richard Morgan, twelve months as a prisoner on the high seas would be just the beginning in a soul-trying test to survive in a hostile new land where, against all odds, he would find a new love and a new life. From the dank cells of England's prisons to the unforgiving frontier of the eighteenth-century outback, Morgan's Run is the epic tale of one man whose strength and character helped settle a country and define its future.

4 out of 5 stars A Classic Tale.......2007-09-16

Colleen McCullough was born in Australia. A neurophysicist, she established the department of neurophysiology at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney She then worked as a researcher and teacher at Yale Medical School for ten years. She is the author of the record-breaking international bestseller The Thorn Birds and her series of books on Rome have also been bestsellers. Colleen lives on Norfolk Island in the Pacific with her husband.

I really thought that I would enjoy this book and was very much looking forward to the date it was published. But for some reason, I don't know why, I was a little disappointed with the book. It is difficult to criticise a Colleen McCullough book, particularly as it was written in her own inimitable style, with great attention to detail and the ability to take the reader back in time to 18th century Bristol among other places, with it narrow winding streets and gin shops spewing out into the road some of the worst trash that ever sailed the seven seas.

The story is told through the eyes of Richard Morgan, an Englishman, caught up in the bitter arms of fate. Richard is convicted of thievery and blackmail by a justice system that presumes guilt, rather than innocence and is deported to New South Wales and so begins a period of change for a man who was only trying to do his duty . . .

I am sure that many reader's particularly those who follow the author will love this book. It is well written and has a good and well thought out storyline. It just did not gel for me personally.

4 out of 5 stars Morgan Run not THE THORNBIRDS...But.......2007-03-25

I always think there is but ONE truly great novel inside every every writer, and in Ms. McCullough's case of course I thought it was THE THORNBIRDS.
Morgan's Run proved to be a close third after her novel TIM.
As has been stated the first few chapters of Morgan's Run is a bit tedious, but once Richard Morgan gets on the ships and then lands onto Botney Bay, interest soars.
It's the kind of story that details and chronicles the life of a man who has lost everything, and gained back his integrity, his loast sense of self and finally learned to love once again.

Characterization is rich and engaging, and I became immersed in finding out just how Richard Morgan was going to survive in a land that was vastly different from his home in England, making him face harsh realities that he could either face what was ahead or die. He chose life and what a life it was.

Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Historically Accurate.......2007-02-27

Morgan's Run is historically accurate when it comes to dates, facts, and the experiences of a person who is sent to a penal colony. Although this novel did not hold my interest in the way that the Thorn Birds did, I persevered and finished it because I wanted to learn something new. One thing that stands out about the novel is how McCullough does an excellent job of describing what life was like on a penal colony and I almost feel as if I am Richard Morgan.

3 out of 5 stars It was ok..........2006-10-30

It was alright. It was pretty slow paced, but the ending was pretty good. An abridged version would've been better... or better yet, read the 1st 50 pages, the last 100 pages, the afterword, and wikipedia Norfolk Island.

I'm a huge fan of historical fiction and this book WAS really good in the historical aspect, just not a terribly captivating story. Not a bad story though... I wouldn't NOT recommend it... just not one that will get a re-read :)

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing work of historical fiction.......2006-02-24

I am a huge fan of Colleen McCollough and have read a great deal of her work (especially her novels dealing with Ancient Rome). This book is absolutely one of my favorite novels.

The novel can be divided into roughly four segments. The first, admittedly the slowest of the four, deals with Morgan's early years. Granted, it could have been abbreviated without loss to the story, however it was by no means difficult to get through.

The second segment involves Morgan's unfortunate unjustified conviction and subsequent incarceration in England. It is at this point that the story really picks up speed and becomes difficult to put down.

The third section details his transport aboard a prison ship to the penal colony of Australia while the final segment follows his life in the harsh landscape of the penal colony.

Once Morgan is arrested, the details surrounding his incarceration and transport are absolutely mesmorizing. McCollough paints such a vivid picture of Morgan's trials and tribulations (and you can only imagine) that you feel like you can see, hear, feel and smell what Morgan is going through.

Just a fantastic novel, by a writer who has written more than a few outstanding works.

      Book Description

During the economic depression of the 1890s and the speculative frenzy of the following decade, Wall Street, high finance, and market crises assumed unprecedented visibility in the United States. Fiction writers published scores of novels in the period that explored this new cultural phenomenon. In Panic!, David A. Zimmerman studies how American novelists and their readers imagined--and in one case, incited--market crashes and financial panics.

Panic! examines how Americans' attitudes toward securities markets, popular investment, and financial catastrophe were entangled with their conceptions of gender, class, crowds, corporations, and history. Zimmerman investigates how writers turned to mob psychology, psychic investigations, and conspiracy discourse to understand not only how financial markets worked, but also how mass acts of financial reading, including novel reading, could trigger economic disaster and cultural chaos. In addition, Zimmerman shows how, by concentrating on markets in crisis, novelists were able to explore the limits of fiction's aesthetic, economic, and ethical capacities. With readings of canonical as well as lesser-known novelists, Zimmerman provides an original and wide-ranging analysis of the relation between fiction and financial modernity.

Funny, tender and raucous, this author's work deserves to be celebrated. Find and read a used copy if you can. As Scott McCloud says of comics in general, most of the emotion is between the panels-- the evocative nature of the medium bears charming fruit here.

A must-read for anyone dealing with depression, The Omega-3 Connection by Andrew L. Stoll, M.D., strikes yet another blow against the standard American diet. We already know that years of noshing on highly processed foods have saddled us with sky-high rates of heart disease, obesity, and related conditions. But, as we're starting to understand now, our eating habits may also be subtly altering our brain chemistry, leaving us vulnerable to anxiety disorders and depression. Only in this case, it's not just what we're eating--it's what we're not eating: foods containing omega-3 essential fatty acids--the "good fats" that help maintain optimal brain function.

In his book, Stoll, the director of the psychopharmacology research lab at Boston's McLean Hospital and assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, suggests that restoring our body's natural balance of omega-3s may help alleviate (and prevent) many types of depression--even for those who don't respond to traditional antidepressants. Omega-3s may also prove helpful with other problems, such as the inability to handle stress, memory loss, and cognitive decline. The book contains a "renewal plan" designed to help readers put Stoll's concepts into practice, recipes for omega-3-rich dishes, advice for choosing supplements, and dosages for therapeutic use.

Although Stoll is quick with the caveat that much of the research on omega-3s and brain function is still evolving, he makes a compelling case for using these fats to regulate depression and other cognitive disorders. Along with major epidemiological evidence that shows lower rates of depression in those cultures that consume a great deal of omega-3s, Stoll's own studies indicate that boosting their intake can reduce depression symptoms. And Stoll cites stacks of additional studies suggesting that omega-3s can also help with major depression, schizophrenia, and postpartum depression. Going even further, Stoll makes a strong argument that omega-3 deficiency could be contributing to rising rates of teen violence and attention deficit disorders.

Of course, depression should never be treated without physician supervision. But in laying the groundwork for the omega-3s to emerge as the next big thing in natural depression therapy, Stoll certainly gives us food for thought. --Norine Dworkin

                    Book Description

Managing depression safely, naturally, and without side effects

For years scientists have searched for a treatment to relieve the pain of depression and other mood disorders -- one that's safe enough for nursing mothers, children, and the elderly -- without the side effects associated with medicines like Prozac, Zoloft, and lithium. Thanks to Dr. Andrew Stoll's groundbreaking research, that search may well be over.

Stoll found that omega-3 fatty acids, already known for their importance in preventing heart disease, Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer, also play a crucial role in mental health. They regulate and enhance mood, sharpen memory, and even aid concentration and learning. Though these remarkable substances are abundant in common fish oils and other foods, the average Western diet includes far too few of the most common sources. Fortunately, our deficient diets and attendant depression can be reversed. The Omega-3 Connection provides readers with all the information they need to restore their natural balance of omega-3 fatty acids, including

Ground-breaking research provides an exciting new approach to treating the most common mental problem in America -- depression. For years, scientists have searched for a "magic bullet" to relieve the pain and trauma of mood disorders -- one safe enough for nursing mothers, children with ADD, and the elderly, and one uncomplicated by the toxicity and invasive side effects associated with mood regulators like Prozac, Zoloft, and lithium. Thanks to Harvard's Andrew Stoll, the search may finally be over. Stoll found that Omega-3 acids, already known for their importance in preventing heart disease and cancer, play a crucial role in mental health -- regulating and enhancing mood, sharpening memory, and even aiding concentration and learning. This substance, so essential to our health, is found abundantly in fish and flax oils and occurs naturally in humans, but is often depleted by our Western diet and lifestyle. In his revolutionary program, Stoll presents readers with all the tools for restoring their natural balance of Omega-3 -- including the foods to eat and how to choose the most effective over-the-counter supplements. Featuring information on how to integrate flaxseed and fish oil into diet and medication plans, simple recipes, supplement doses and sources, The Omega-3 Connection offers an entirely new, practical method for improving mental health.

What I liked best about this book is that it gives a comprehensive review of a tremendous amount of information, and does so in an organized, understandable, straightforward way. There is a good balance of scientific information, personal experience, and sound, solid advice. Dr. Stoll is one of the worlds top experts on this subject, so I trust the information in the book. I liked it so much, that I bought a few copies to give to my patients.

What the author says is true! His program works! I am at last free of insomnia and depression. Even anger has become fully under my control.

At age 68 I am not becoming rich and fameous; but I am becoming myself as I was at a much younger age. I have even happily gone back to work.

This is a book that can be life changing. It's extremely solid, clearly written, for the lay person, and fully documented, and it concerns Dr. Stoll's claims as to the benefits of taking Omega-3 oil supplements. It was recommended to me by a Nurse Practitioner at the Hospital Clinic where I go for regular medical care, and it has caused a revolution in my life. We live in a wilderness of self help and health care books that can confuse us and numb us with their contradictory claims. But be assured this book is a thorough and brilliant record of the results of actual medical research. Dr. Stoll's work with Omega-3 was done at Harvard, and he knows whereof he speaks. He is not the only one recommending that we take Omega-3 supplements to make up for the deficiencies in our "modern" diet. Indeed many many doctors are now talking about this, and word can not spread too fast. Read this book. And take it from this reader: there is indeed a profound" Omega-3 connection, " and it's vital that we avail ourselves of this substance for better health.

This is one of those books where after you read it your life style will change. We spend billions of dollars on health care at the treatment level when we should be focusing on the cause.

As a physician treating cardiovascular disease the cause is in our diet. Read it if you want to know more about yourself and lead a healthy life.

This is an excellent book on the omega-3s, which are health providing substances found in fish oil. Either way, this is an excellent book for learning more about omega-3s.

Founded by cookbook author Marion Cunningham and professional baker Amy Pressman, the Baker's Dozen, a Bay Area group, helps its members bake better, sharing knowledge and solving members' baking problems. Edited by Rick Rodgers, The Baker's Dozen Cookbook, the group's first work, includes 135 enticing recipes, from Sour Cream Pound Cake and Almond and Chocolate Sandwich Cookies to breads and other nonsweet baked goods. The book's great appeal, however, lies in its lucid instructive material. New and veteran bakers alike will find this collection a true learning tool, which provides basic tutorials and more-advanced explorations into the art of baking.

The recipes come with a pedigree. Readers can thus enjoy baking-book expert Flo Braker's Triple Chocolate Cake and Peanut Butter and Strawberry Jam Cake, "Italian baker" Carol Field's Italian Whole Wheat Bread, and Chez Panisse pastry chef Lindsey Shere's Warm Pear Tart and Simple Nectarine Gallete. Other outstanding recipes include Julia Cookenboo's Pistachio-Golden Raisin Biscotti, Fran Gage's Spicy Cornmeal Crackers, and Rochelle Huppin-Fleck's Blood Orange Chiffon Pie with Chocolate Crumb Crust. In addition to insightful notes that accompany every recipe, the book offers definitive ingredient and equipment glossaries (chocolate is particularly well treated here), a detailed cake-basics section (batter-mixing for all cake types as well as other techniques are explored in depth), and color photos that depict the mouthwatering sweets in all their glory. The group has done its work well--this is one of the best baking books to appear in recent years. --Arthur Boehm

                    Book Description

More than ten years ago, cookbook author and teacher Marion Cunningham and professional baker Amy Pressman met occasionally to talk about the wonders and mysteries of baking. They chatted, exchanged ideas, offered suggestions, and ended up solving some of their difficult baking problems. Slowly a concept took shape. Suppose groups of like-minded bakers were to meet to exchange ideas and solve baking problems?

At the first meeting of The Baker's Dozen, forty people showed up with forty lemon meringue pies. The topic of the meeting was weeping and shrinking meringues and how to prevent them from happening. (The solution: Heat the egg whites and sugar while beating to avoid weeping; use more egg whites to solve the problem of shrinking.)

The word spread quickly, and The Baker's Dozen has grown to more than ten times the original number -- there are now more than four hundred members in the Bay Area. The groups continue to have two simple goals: Share what you know about baking and learn from one another.

Now you can share the collective experiences and favorite recipes of The Baker's Dozen in The Baker's Dozen Cookbook, with recipes selected and tested by some of the most respected and most accomplished bakers in the business.

Lindsey Shere, co-founder and pastry chef of Chez Panisse, shares the secrets of tarts. Authors Carol Field and Fran Gage and baker Peter Reinhart offer their collective wisdom on yeast breads and flatbreads. John Phillip Carroll teaches about easy quick breads, coffee cakes, and muffins. Renowned author and baker Flo Braker and her team share their years of cake-baking experience. Carolyn Weil and her group offer the ultimate advice and techniques for pies and piecrusts. Robert Morocco and Julia Cookenboo divulge their trade secrets of making foolproof cookies equal to those of any quality bakeshop.

The Baker's Dozen Cookbook goes far beyond recipes. You'll benefit from what these bakers learned on their field trips. You'll learn tricks such as using dental floss to cut neat slices of creamy cheesecake. You'll learn the differences between a pastry bag and a parchment cone; between a pÂte brisÉe, a "broken dough," and a pÂte sablÉe, a "sandy dough"; between butter and shortening in determining the flakiness of a crust; and so much more.

So whether you simply want to become a better baker yourself or to form a Baker's Dozen group with others, all you need is The Baker's Dozen Cookbook. It puts four hundred of America's best bakers and everything they know right by your side.

Short and sweet, I've been a home baker for a lot of years, and I'm so grateful to this book for helping me to solve problems I've encountered during those years and up until this book never found a satisfactory answer to!

Since buying this book my angel food cakes are heavenly and my flans are beautifully caramelized to name just a few areas where their tips and techniques were exactly what I was seeking!

Simple enough for a first time baker and thorough enough to help a seasoned baker! Get it!

4 out of 5 stars I am happy with my purchase, BUT...........2006-12-14

I am happy with my purchase, but I noticed some mistakes. For instance, when making the Buttercream frosting, the book states that you should put a heatproof bowl in and inch of water in a skillet. The proper way to heat the egg mix is to put it in a heatproof bowl, then put the bowl in a large sauce pan or stock pot of simmering water. Do not over fill the pot, you only need to have maybe the bottom 1/3 of the bowl in the water,
and then follow the instructions listed in the book. I did this technique in culinary school, so I knew what to do. Someone not familiar with the technique may run into problems. The other thing that I noticed that when you look at the recipe list for the Choc Buttercream, the recipe asks for 2/3 cup of water, but in the execution only 1/3 cup of water is used.
However, having said all of that, I used the classic buttercream, the choc buttercream, the rich chocolate cake, and the fav buttercake. I was happy with the taste of all 4. Especially the choc cake. It was moist, and SMELLED so much of chocolate. I gave the cake away to my freind for her office Christmas party, but I had fun eating the leftover batter.....LOL.
There is a huge amount of information on technique in here as well. I have not read it all yet, the way it is set up you can pick and choose what you will read when you need it. There is also useful sidebar information with each recipe. Each recipe has the authors name next to it, so if you are a fan of one particular person, you can flip to their recipe.

`The Baker's Dozen Cookbook' lists at least 14 authors on the cover, the proverbial baker's dozen of 13 plus editor, Rick Rodgers, a very notable cookbook author in his own right (see, especially, his `Kaffeehaus' on Austrian coffee and pastry shops).

On the surface, this looks like just another collection of recipes by famous bakers. Three years ago, before I started reviewing cookbooks, I would not have even given it credit for that. Now, however, I recognize at least eight of the thirteen principal authors (Flo Braker, Marion Cunningham, Carol Field, Fran Gage, David Lebovitz, Alice Medrich, Peter Reinhart, and Lindsey Shere) as world class experts in one or more fields of baking. This puts the book in the same class as one of my very favorite baking books, `Baking With Julia', a Dori Greenspan written and edited collaboration of the great Julia Child and over 20 baking experts. But in many ways, this book may be even better than the Julia Child volume.

Not only is this a collection of recipes, it is a true collective effort based on an informal gathering of West Coast bakers seeking to explore issues in baking. In this mode, the enterprise takes on the aspects of the `Cooks Illustrated' magazine, where lots of different ways of doing the same thing are evaluated. One of the first and most interesting revelations was the fact that all these leading baking experts went home and made an angel food cake and when they all compared their results, no two came out the same, in spite of the fact that they were all using the very same recipe. The first lesson I take from this observation is that simply carefully following a good recipe does not guarantee success in baking. All sorts of epherema such as the ambient temperature and humidity are important to so many baking techniques.

Now, if you happen to own books from each of these authors, this volume becomes a bit less valuable, as I am sure there will be a lot of overlap. Even so, I found some unique things in here, for example, a recipe for making use of my just purchased Madelaine molds other than making Madelaines.

Like the Julia Child collaboration, this is sort of a `tasting menu' kind of book, which exposes you to all the different types of baking at a very high level of proficiency, and you can see behind the scenes at how these bakers think about their recipes and ingredients.

If you are new to baking, I highly recommend this volume and the `Baking With Julia' volume. I am especially happy with the latter title, as I have always produced superior results when using its recipes.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Kudos!.......2005-07-25

If you want to become a better all-round baker, get this book. It is packed with education, instruction, advice, and expertise of 13 top bakers. Yet, it unpretentious and very practical. Let me be honest, I simply could not make an edible pie crust until I got this book...shingles and tile I could make but not a crust. No longer is this the case. It is compiled well and clearly communicates its baking principles.

5 out of 5 stars Recipes always come out wonderful!.......2003-10-20

I was looking for a book that gave me information on how foods react to each other and why. This book does that and more. I particularly enjoy the first section. It calls itself a glossary but should be renamed encyclopedia. Everything from what percentage of chocolate liquor makes bittersweet chocolate bittersweet to what situtations baking soda is prefered over powder and why. The preface sections of each chapter are also filled with a ton of information that I have never seen in any of my other books. The section on high altitude cooking is also probably the most in depth published. To top off the interesting information are recipes that so far have not failed. I have made several of the cakes and they have been delicious and beautiful. There are only two things that would make this book better: pictures and weight. Even if there was a very tiny picture of each of the recipes it would be nice to be able to see it. Early on in the book they talk about how measuring by weight is so much better but most of the recipes are not by weight. How hard would it have been to put both cups and weight in each recipe. This book combined with "The Professional Pastry Chef" by Bo Friberg gives a pretty thorough decription of what you need to know to bake.
