Relative Danger by June Shaw.......2007-08-01
I had to take a hiatus from reading novels for a while, but I am back! I'm here to say that Relative Danger was a great book to start my reading comeback! What a page turner! As an international traveler, a doting grandmother and an independent, active baby boomer, I could identify with Cealie. I highly recommend this great book for everyone who enjoys romantic murder mysteries, but especially all of you baby boomers! I had a very difficult time putting this book down.
Great Read!.......2007-07-22
Relative Danger by June Shaw (Thomson - Gale 2006) is a mystery written from the perspective of a baby boomer. It is the first adventure for Cealie, a sexy grandmother, who is out to "find herself". She stumbles on a mysterious death at her granddaughter's (Kat) high school while in town for Kat's graduation.
Relative Danger is an easy and fun read. Although it's a mystery, Relative Danger is laced with humor and insight into the aging of woman who was recently widowed and coping well.
The reader will relate to and love the characters, from Cealie's single parent, somewhat depressed son, Roger to perky but honor student granddaughter, Kat. And then there is Gil, Cealie's sometimes boy friend, and my favorite, "Chicken Boy".
Cealie becomes a snoop when Kat avoids school just before graduation because of the suspected murder of the school's janitor. Cealie was determined to see Kat graduate based on son Roger's deceased wife's wish that her daughter graduate.
There are unexpected twists and turns in the plot that will keep the reader in suspense until Cealie finally solves mystery.
Relative Danger is a great launch for what could be a series for Granny turned private eye Cealie. However, as a male, sometimes I found that I was given too much information about some of Cealie's female "problems".
Ironically, this look into how a widowed Baby Boomer overcomes aging problems may make Relative Danger a surprise best seller.
I highly recommend Relative Danger. It just may be a book that will make rainy summer vacation days a little sunnier.
A Wonderful book and a great read.......2007-03-09
Cealie Gunther is a super sleuthing amateur homicide detective but not by choice. Her granddaughter, Kat, is scheduled to graduate from high school soon but the murder of a janitor at her school and the implication of her favorite teacher has her staying home from school with no desire to graduate. Cealie made a deathbed promise to Kat's mother to always be there taking her place when Kat graduates, gets married, has babies and other memorable events in life.
That deathbed promise causes Cealie to seek a position of substitute teacher at the high school Kat attends so she can secretly investigate the murder and get Kat's favorite teacher off the hook so Kat will go back to school and graduate.
June Shaw has created interesting and realistic characters in Relative Danger. The suspense begins to mount right from the beginning of the story and each chapter ends in a cliff hanger, which made it impossible for me to put the book down. Ms. Shaw's well written and structured book coerced me into reading her book to find out what was going to happen next. The number of suspects increases as Cealie gathers new facts and when the culprit is finally caught, I was completely surprised. I never would have guessed.
Relative Danger is a wonderful cozy mystery and will keep you entertained throughout the story. When it ended, I was sorry that there was no more to read. However, the story ends with Cealie receiving a mysterious email from her cousin Stevie that begins with HELP!!! So, it looks like the murders, suspense, intrigue, and cliff hangers may not be too far away. I can't wait.
I highly recommend this book. You won't regret reading it.
Great new mystery series.......2007-01-04
Caelie Gunther arrives in town a few days before her granddaughter Kat's graduation only to find out Kat may not graduate at all. Caelie made a deathbed promise to Kat's mother that she would see Kat graduate, so she is determined to make Kat graduate.
Kat explains that a school janitor was killed. Her favorite teacher is no longer speaking to her so she has no interest in going to school. Caelie signs up to be a substitute teacher at the high school to get Kat back in classes.
In the school Caelie encounters some rude students and there are some mysterious incidents as well as more violence. Can she find the killer in time for Kat to complete her final exams and graduate? Will the fact that her ex-lover Gil Thurman is in town at his new restaurant sidetrack her plans?
I enjoyed Caelie. She is a great senior sleuth. She is a lot of fun and cares about her family but doesn't want to be tied down to them or them to her. Apparently she moves around a lot. She doesn't want to get tied down in a relationship either. This makes her a very interesting character and also very three-dimensional in my eyes.
The sparks always fly when she's with Gil. There is a lot of mystery as to what might develop between them. I hope that eventually something does.
I like the way Caelie interacts with her granddaughter and son as well.
I highly recommend this book.
Sassy amateur detective will entertain you.......2006-12-30
Cealie Gunther visits her widowed son and granddaughter Kat, for her high school graduation--only to find that Kat has stopped attending school. And, her favorite teacher is a suspect in the death of a school janitor.
Cealie decides to take it upon herself to get the girl to go back to school, and if that means she has to solve a murder, so be it. She takes a job as a substitute teacher to gain entry to the school and snoop around.
Cealie's ex-lover, Gil, is also in town opening a new venue in his chain of Cajun restaurants. Cealie had broken off their relationship when she felt a need to find her own independence. She has spent the time since traveling and rediscovering herself. However, she finds herself unable to stay away from him even when she spies his new woman.
Cealie manages to cause all kinds of trouble for everyone as she sticks her nose in the murder investigation and attempts to get her family back on track.
I liked Cealie a lot. She is feisty, determined, and lovable. She has a cactus plant as a pet. Shaw does a good job of showing that grandmas can be sexy too.
Armchair Interviews says: Sexy grandmas, hmmmm.
Book Description
Picture a hotel room in 1948 Singapore. Picture a dispute between black marketer and thief Russell Pearce and an associate-an associate who opens fire and murders Russell Pearce.
Fast forward to present-day Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Young Doug Pearce, just fired from his steady job in the brewery, has never strayed far from home. But he's always found stories of his Uncle Russ, the family black sheep, fascinating. In comes a letter from an old friend of his dead uncle inviting him up to Toronto. Doug, at loose ends and bored with killing time, accepts. On arrival, he learns that wealthy and glamorous Edna has an agenda: she has assembled enough clues to solve the murder of Russell Pearce and to recover a legendary red diamond he was thought to be smuggling.
Doug, nervous but game, agrees to play detective. How bad can it be to jet off to a glamour spot or two and have an adventure? Whoa! By the end of his first day in Casablanca, Doug knows he's made a mistake. And while he meets people eager to help-a retired museum curator, a beautiful and self-absorbed heiress, and her elderly father, a colleague of Russell Pearce-it becomes clear that someone else is interested in Doug, someone who is also looking for the diamond.
From Morocco to Egypt to Bahrain to Singapore, Doug stumbles on. And whether he's escaping across Cairo rooftops, ducking bullets in a high-speed desert chase, or killing time in a crowded Egyptian jail cell, Doug is sure of one thing: He has no clue what he's doing. But surely he'll think of something as he's propelled full circle back to Singapore and the famed Raffles Hotel. He's definitely not 007...but will he prove to be a zero?

Coming of age.......2007-03-31
Relative Danger has a good plot, fascinating settings, believable dialog, and a sense of humor. Like most novels, it has it weaknesses, but I was able to overlook all but 2. One is major, and that's the protagonist, Doug. He seems to be 30-something, but a more hapless, dopey character would be hard to find. If I were from Pennsylvania, I'd be insulted by the depiction of Doug's hometown as a boring backwater full of dull nobodies. Doug is likeable enough, but seems never to have picked up a book in his life, and is as gullible as a 6 year old.
My 2nd complaint is minor, about the forced cleverness that pops up every chapter or so.
Relative Danger is worth finishing as a fast paced, easy romp that borders upon "cozy."
Some clever moments, but..........2007-02-20
Maybe I was expecting too much based on other reviews, but this book never caught fire for me. There were occasional glimmers of humor and suspense, but ultimately not enough to keep me riveted. Not much character development and the final wrap up was either too obvious or came from nowhere. A disappointment.
A Three Chambered Heart.......2006-12-19
"Relative Danger" is a mystery with a three chambered heart. First is Doug Pearce's hunt for answers about a long lost uncle who came to a bad end in a hotel room in 1948 Singapore. Doug is about the least likely sleuth one might ever encounter in the genre. He is an "innocent abroad" with a nice earthen hue. His only credentials are a blood relationship to the victim and (thanks to being laid off from a brewery job) enough free time to look into the case. His dependency on "the kindness of strangers" begins in chapter one with a mysterious benefactor financing his journey overseas. It continues person-to-person to the very end of the story with a timely arrival of Singapore authorities and media. This person-to-person connection makes the figures we meet along the way real, even recognizable.
All points in between Morocco and Singapore are connected in the second beating lobe of this story's heart by a hunt for a blood red diamond that chases through some of the most exotic and interesting places on Earth. The taste, smell and feel of each waypoint is so richly told that a it's hard to resist the urge to check the passport between chapters for freshly inked visa stamps.
The most delicious pulse of this story's heart comes from its third lobe, Aisha Al-Kady, a woman as exotic and sensual as the environment she fills. In Arabic, Aisha means life. In "Relative Danger", Aisha means life AND to have it more abundantly. She's so strongly drawn that dents in her halo are real, the beauty bone-deep, the sex exuberant, and the bullets deadly.
This isn't the kind of story intended to be heady or profound. No, what earns "Relative Danger" its chops is the way it's told. This is a story with compelling prose, a gut-feel reality, an unexpected twist ending, and a delightfully Southern pace. It is an Edgar Allan Poe Awards® 2005 Nominee for Best First Novel By An American Author. It is an impressive first outing for Charles Benoit. I look forward to more.
Good Read.......2006-04-01
A 4 might be generous but it's a good read. I have been in Singapore on business and pleasure and agree with other reviews that the author presents a good overview of the current mood in sterile, controlled, serious Singapore. The parts set in Raffles Hotel are right on. I have also visited Morocco and Egypt, but for much shorter periods of time. I think he caught their flavor also. You just have to live with the fact that so many people from a 1950 event are so easy to find and how neatly they come together. I plan to buy his other book.
Maybe it's just me.......2006-03-18
I bought this book based on the reviews. I found the prologue fascinating and began reading the story eagerly, but I immediately had a sense that the rest of the book had been written by someone else. The best way I can describe it is that it felt like I was reading fiction written either by or for high school students. I tried skipping ahead a bit but found the same problem throughout. Very disappointed.

Review by Tammy from Fallen Angel Reviews.......2006-06-03
Marisa McCabe is out working the horses when they get spooked and the cinch breaks, throwing her to the ground. When she comes to, handsome Dustin Layne is there helping her up and untangling the leads. Marisa learns that Dustin is new in town and here as part of the construction crew putting in the highly debated Canyon Rojo Dam.
Dustin is struck by the beauty and innocence of Marisa and after learning how hard and lonely Marisa's home life has been, vows to be there as her friend and help her in anyway he can. They spend time together occasionally and develop a friendship.
Marisa learns about a plot to stop the dam from being finished and goes to Dustin with her concerns. They are soon thrown together from the danger to Marisa, and their friendship turns into more even though Dustin has concerns over their age difference. Will Dustin and Marisa be able to overcome their differences to have a life together or will they let fear split them apart?
Relative Dangers is a heart-warming romance that details the best and worse of people in a fashion that will leave you breathless. Marisa is a strong woman that has dealt with the worst life threw at her and remained true to herself. Dustin is a good man that admits his past mistakes and wants more in his life than work and a distant family.
I found the relationship between Dustin and Marisa to be poignant and charming and I give Relative Dangers 4 Angels.

Book Description
Themes of transgression, eroticism, and violence thread through this retrospective collection of short stories and essays. A psychotherapist falls under the spell of her vampire patient in "Unicorn Tapestry" and in "Beauty and the Opéra or the Phantom Beast," an evil maestro finds redemption in his lovely pupil, and additional essays "Art Is Long" and "The Stagestruck Vampire" offer autobiographical reflections on the art of writing. Combining lush prose with a biting wit, this terrifying collection will appeal to fans of fantasy, romance, horror, and character-driven suspense.
Customer Reviews:
I love Her Stuff!!.......2005-07-03
My favorite though is the Beauty and the Opera, just FYI that story is also availibla in the Modern Classics of Fantay Collection and it is less expensive there.
Stagestruck..........2005-01-10
From the macabre to the lightly horrific, this anthology has something for almost anyone. The stories delve into the past and then shoot to the future. A psychiatrist whose aim is to change her clients finds herself the one changed. The last survivors of earth's desolation depend on the mercy of aliens, and a young girl finds within herself the power to avenge the wrongs done by those who torment her. One story in particular stands out as especially haunting- the opening story, Beauty and the Opera or the Phantom Beast; as you might guess, it deals with the Phantom of the Opera- leaning more towards what the internet would term Christine - Erik shippers- but be warned- it's not all roses. That story, if no other, makes this a book worth reading.
More Than Vampires.......2004-12-19
I am not particularly a vampire fan, although there seem to be many out there. However, I am a Suzy McKee Charnas fan, ever since I read Motherlines lo, those many years ago.
Ms. Charnas is also the winner of a Hugo Award for her "revenge fantasy" werewolf story called "Something Amazon won't let me print, but is mentioned in the review below" which just happens to appear in the Stagestruck Vampires collection.
This book is primarily a collection of dark fantasy, as well as two excellent essays. One, the eponymous "Stagestruck Vampires", is about the travails of bringing her Nebula Award winning novelet "Unicorn Tapestry" to the stage, the other, "They're Right, Art Is Long", deals with the hassles of writing (and getting published) the four book series starting with "Walk To The End Of The World".
As well as the various "monster" stories that Ms. Charnas has written over the years, the book also includes a new story called "Peregrines" a very fun romp that includes a child-shaman and an old, crusty tarot reader in a New York of a few years hence, when Homeland Security, among other things, requires permits for state-to-state travel, just a little throwaway bit, but indicative of the attention to details that are part of Suzy McKee Charnas' charm.
Read this book!
A Smorgasbord of Weird and Wonderful Treats.......2004-11-14
Stagestruck Vampires by Suzy McKee Charnas is an anthology of both new and vintage works. Included are such favorites as "Beauty and the Opera or the Phantom Beast," the Hugo-award-winning "Boobs" and a trio of tales about Charnas' vampire, Dr. Edward Weyland (of The Vampire Tapestry fame), who evolves toward humanity rather than away from it. A surprise for me was "Advocates," a collaboration between Charnas and Chelsea Quinn Yarbro (author of the Saint-Germain Chronicles) in which their respective vampires (Weyland and the Comte de Saint Germain) meet. This was not a combination I would ever have imagined working, yet it does. Each character retains the inimitable qualities that made him so memorable in previous works. Also included in the collection are "Evil Thoughts" (which cannot be kept hidden) and "Listening to Brahms," a post-apocalyptic nightmare in which the beauty and corruption of humankind lives on after our physical annihilation--in a most unexpected way. As for the newest works, there's "Peregrines," appearing for the first time in 2004 as well as "The Stagestruck Vampire" and "They're Right, Art Is Long" published for the very first time in this collection. "Peregrines" is a novella set in a xenophobic near-future New York. This world in which undocumented immigrants are hunted down along with anyone who harbors them becomes a training ground for the holiest of holy. One is forced to ponder how near the world of the spirit may be our dusty, mundane lives. The last two works are essays. "The Stagestruck Vampire" takes the reader step-by-step through the writing and first staging of Charnas' theatrical work Vampire Dreams. They're Right, Art Is Long" documents the author's twenty-plus-year odyssey in creating the acclaimed quartet of novels known as the Holdfast Chronicles. The entire anthology Stagestruck Vampires is an enjoyable read for lovers of fantastic fiction (or for that matter just good fiction) while at the same time providing a depth that rewards repeated readings.

Overcoming Bulimia workbook.......2007-02-06
This is the best resource for eating disorder self-help I have seen. Widely applicable for those who binge and purge by a number of definitions, including overexercising and subjective binging. Addresses a comprehensive range of related issues such as anxiety, obsessiveness, and perfectionism. Practical with real step-by-step things you can actually DO, ways to measure your progress, and encouragement about expected setbacks. Very strongly recommended.
Really Helpful Book.......2005-07-11
This workbook is good for many reasons. It is written in a way that is easy to read, and very interesting. It does not seem at all like a dry textbook. It covers everything from defining eating disorders, to the root of the problem, to steps to take to begin recovering. I would highly recommend it for all ages.
Easy to follow instructions, but can be improved.......2005-03-06
The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow. It would have been better if the authors had given guidelines on how to judge when to move on to the next phase of recovery, and how to deal with feelings that arise at each stage.
Using with my therapist and DBT.......2005-01-06
This book breaks it down and then builds you up on a path to recovery. I use it as part of the things I pick up when I absolutely don't know what to do next and the disease is beating down my door. Very well written. Highly recommended for the bullimic that is ready for recovery.
Most Important Book I Will Ever Read.......2004-05-11
From start to finish this book is packed with useful, informative and best of all, unintimidating tools that are extremely helpful. This book offers insight into the distorted thoughts that accompany eating disorders. By understanding what is going on in your mind, you can learn to change the way you see both yourself and the effects of your eating disorder. I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering with an eating disorder or to anyone who knows someone who is. Reading this book truly changed my life, and for the first time in four years I am actually living a healthy and fufilling lifestyle.
Book Description
The Tadich Grill A History of San Francisco's Oldest Restaurant, with Recipes by John Briscoe In 1849, an unassuming coffee stand was founded on the San Francisco waterfront. Enduring earthquakes, fires, and changes of name, location, and ownership, that establishment still stands, now known as the Tadich Grill, California's oldest restaurant. The constants throughout the Tadich's evolution have been hearty seafood and other local specialties, and the stewardship of Croatian American families. John Tadich immigrated to San Francisco in 1872 and started working at the then-called New World Coffee Saloon soon after, becoming sole owner in 1887. He sold the restaurant in 1928 to the Buich family, which has carried on the Tadich tradition ever since. A destination restaurant and a local treasure, the Tadich Grill continues to evoke an old-world feel. THE TADICH GRILL captures the history, ambiance, and flavors of this San Francisco institution, presenting a warm portrait of a true culinary success story.
Customer Reviews:
It's a great book. It's just not that much of a COOKbook.......2003-01-28
The description makes it sound as though this book is chock full of recipes from this very-old, very-beloved restaurant. But note carefully that it says 30 recipes. These are good recipes, without doubt. While I haven't tried them yet, they seem to be excellent instructions for the most old-standard of established San Francisco cooking, from sand dabs to cioppino. But 30 recipes isn't a lot, and you won't find anything very surprising. Get the best quality stuff and cook it simply -- that seems to be the Tadich Grill's key to success.
More than making me want to cook, however, this book makes me want to hop on a plane to the coast and rush over to the restaurant. It's more a history of the Tadich Grill, in the context of the history of San Francisco -- a foodie's guide to the City. And in that regard it succeeds very well. If you're curious how San Francisco restaurants came to be dominated by Croats, or you're interested in the culture that creates such a long standing institution, you'll enjoy this book. I'm not sure whether it's worth a full-scale investment to put it on your shelf (I took the book out of the library), but it's certainly an enjoyable read.
Now, let's see if there are any airline specials for San Francisco right now... I'm hungry!
Terrific Tadich Grill.......2002-10-18
If you have ever been to this old restaurant near the Financial District of San Francisco, you will like and appreciate this book. The SAS (steak & seafood) here is simply seasoned but very good to eat. The book's old pictures are fascinating. Try the recipes at home and impress your dinner guests. If you have some cooking skills, you will have few problems following the recipes. As Tony Bennett sang, " I left my heart in San Francisco.. or was it the Tadich Grill?"
