Having seen the movie many times I decided to read Patriot Games and see how the novel compared to the film. Unfortunately, as with other reviewers, I was disappointed by the novel but regard the film as well done. Both adhere to the same story line with the novel going more in depth into the characters and technical details of the intelligence, military, and law enforcement communities. Honestly, I felt it was a bit much and could have done without it.
The best example is the Ryan character. I just could not sympathize with him, even though he is portrayed as a great family man. He did not seem human at all and the actions of the characters at the end just seem plain ridiculous, as well as Tom Clancy's justification for those actions. By the end of the book, I did not care about his fate at all. In fact, no character was crafted well enough to not seem ridiculous.
The dialogue between the characters also seemed simplistic and childish. It can be hard to convey the feelings and expressions of characters in a novel without having to resort to plain, simplistic dialogue where every character says what they normally wouldn't if one could see their expressions and emotions. However, Clancy takes this to the extreme. The dialogue almost seemed Victorian in nature. Everyone needed to voice the reasons for their actions, and continue to do so even when the reader has gotten their fill. For example, a state trooper who only appears on one page of the novel. Based on events that happened before his arrival I could derive his emotions and feelings clearly without being explicitly told. However, Clancy goes on and on describing this trooper's ruminations ad nauseum.
Overall, it seems like this was a very early work for Clancy and it shows. Perhaps he was honing his craft, but that is surprising seeing how well I regarded his previous novels. I think he was having fun with the Ryan character as a family man, the beauty of childbirth, morality etc. and he just got carried away. Unfortunately, that translates to a very slow story with many long drawn out parts.
I cannot recommended this book when there are much better Clancy novels out there. If you are new to Clancy I would suggest The Hunt for Red October or Red Storm Rising over Patriot Games. I would have liked to have been able to have read the book before seeing the film. Perhaps that would change my view. However, the movie does a good job of trimming the fat, which is what Clancy should have done with Patriot Games.
Great action and suspense.......2007-05-28
Jack Ryan, former marine and stockbroker now naval history professor, is on vacation with his wife and daughter in London when all hell breaks loose and terrorists start shooting at a car containing the Prince, his wife, and their daughter. Jack's military training automatically kicks in and he manages to tackle on of the gunman, disarm him, and shoot the other to death. He is shot, himself, in the process, but is saved when help arrives on the scene. He wakes up in the hospital to find himself considered a hero both in England and the US, but not by the terrorists he thwarted. When the terrorists decide to follow Jack back to the United States to tie up their loose ends he finds himself torn between his simple lifestyle as a teacher and a prospective job with the CIA where he can attempt to stop the very militants that threaten the lives of his family and countless others.
This action packed suspense novel keeps the pages turning throughout. The politics and secrecy of the military and various alphabet soup law enforcement agencies keep the reader guessing and wondering if the good guys will catch up with and get ahead of the bad guys. All the while, the suspense is contrasted with the human emotion displayed between Jack and his family as he has to choose the best way to protect his family and decide if his decisions will put them in risk of more or less danger. This is the first in the Jack Ryan series with Jack Ryan as an adult (preceeded by Without Remorse, a John Clark novel with a younger Jack referenced along with his father). It is a great start to what will certainly be a great series.
Best Clancy book by far.......2007-03-07
I've read this one many times and I'm getting ready to read it again. It's exceptional, bringing out great emotion and getting the adrenaline pumping time after time. One word: Amazing.
Good Read for a 1st Time Clancy Reader.......2007-02-12
This was the first time I read a Clancy novel. I had heard that this was a good place to start as it is a prequel to "hunt for red october" and also isn't so technically deep as his other books. The book starts out fast and got me hooked; however, it slows way down for about 300 pages in the middle. There was a time when I thought about taking the book back to the library and said I wouldn't read another clancy book. I plowed through though, since I figured it had a lot of good reviews on here for a reason. Turns out I am happy that I did because all of the boring dialogue and plot build-up pays off in the end as the last 100 pages or so were a real page turner.
If you start it, make sure to finish it as you won't regret it.

Doctor John Patrick Ryan, a teacher in history at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, comes to London with his 4-year-old daughter and his wife, a surgeon Doctor in Maryland, for his vacation and research. By accident, Ryan foils an Ulster Liberation Army terrorist attack on the Prince of Wales and his family. He earns a friendship with the Royal family, and also earns a Knight Commander of the Victorian Order as well as the admiration of many British and American people. However, ULA wants revenge. They attack Ryan's family and nearly kill his daughter and his pregnant wife. Ryan accepts to work for the CIA to help them arrest the bad guys. He dives into murky world of intelligence, counter-intelligence and terrorism. When the Princess and the Prince of Wales visit Ryan' home at Peregrine Cliff on the Chesapeake Bay, ULA attacks again...
It is worth giving this book a try. It is really a good read!!

There certainly seems to be neither rhyme nor reason to how they throw together Tom Clancy novels together in these collections. Here we have the 3rd, 5th and 6th of Clancy's novels, which are the 2nd, 4th and 5th of the Jack Ryan novels (except that while "Patriot Games" was written 2nd it actually takes place before the "1st" Jack Ryan novel, "The Hunt for Red October"--are you taking notes?). However, the two common denominators are that of the first six Clancy novels these three are the three better ones and that all three books have been turned into films.
"Patriot Games" explains why the English keep calling Ryan "Sir John" in "The Hunt for Red October." I always fancied that Clancy had written this novel first (or, at least had the idea for the story first), but that having Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth be characters in a fictional novel was frowned upon; however, I consider the relationship between the Ryans and the Royals to be one of the most compelling aspects of the novel. Certainly "Patriot Games" shows a great leap forward in Clancy's writing style. The novel literally begins with a bang as Ryan thwarts an attack by a I.R.A. splinter group. What happens afterwards brings him into the fold of the C.I.A. The ending of the novel, decidedly different from that of the film version, refutes the idea that Clancy is a reactionary conservative.
"Clear and Present Danger" presents a scenario that remains one of the most attractive as a real world solution to a continuing problem, namely the use of the U.S. military to put the Columbian drug cartels out of business. The problem, of course, is that the President decides to make this a covert mission, which provides ample opportunity for things to go too far. This is the novel that introduces Ding Chavez to John Clark, and Clark to Ryan for that matter. In terms of the characters in the Jack Ryan novels, "Clear and Present Danger" is the one that probably has the most resonance with the rest of the series. Much is made of the way Clancy incorporates cutting edge technology into his narratives, but his strength has always been his characters. There is no better example of this aspect than in the beginning of "Clear and Present Danger," when Clancy introduces us to the character of Red Wegener with such wonderful detail that we are surprised to discover he ends up being a minor character in the novel.
"The Sum of All Fears" is one of Clancy's novels where you certainly hope that he is not prescient. Middle Eastern terrorists get a hold of a nuclear weapon and decide to detonate it at the Super Bowl. However, this is not a simple act of terrorism but part of a larger game that seeks to have the United States and the Soviet Union skip over a return to the Cold War and go right for a nuclear exchange. Meanwhile, Jack Ryan is caught in the switches as a new president comes into office and his National Security Advisor wants our hero's head on a platter. When the bomb detonates events escelate beyond the speed of those on both sides to process the information and make decisions than hurtle the world towards oblivion.
As always, you are urged to read all of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan novels in order even though what we have here qualifies as the essence of the first part of the Jack Ryan saga. After this point, following an interlude with the first John Clark novel, we move from Jack Ryan the CIA years to Jack Ryan the White House years. Although his recent novels have seen like they were written by rote, these three novels will more than evidence why Clancy has a devote following who love to consume his massive tomes as soon as they come out in hardback.
3-of Clancy's best, BAR NONE, a truly worthwhile buy.......2001-04-11
For sentimental reasons only, I view 'Hunt For Red October' as Clancy's best book, but these 3 cannot be far behind, especially 'Clear & Present Danger' and 'The Sum Of All Fears'. Absolutely riviting novels that prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Clancy truly has his finger squarely on the pulse of what is going on in the world -- or what COULD go on.
'Patriot Games' is a phenomenal story of revenge from an IRA Terrorist who's plot to assassinate Charles & Di is thwarted by Jack Ryan, who is completely unaware of the horrific consequences of his actions. GREAT read.
'Clear & Present Danger' is a VERY complicated story of the war on drugs and a few people in high places making some pretty rash decisions that creates a completely incredible situation and Clancy ties it all together in one of his all-time best stories. Highly recommended.
'The Sum Of All Fears' is another Clancy rocket-of-a-novel with many plots and sub-plots, all of which are tied neatly together in the end revolving around a few middle-eastern bad guys who get their dirty fingers on an actual Israeli atomic bomb, converting it into a thermo-nuclear device, and their plans of actually using it on American soil. A true Clancy masterpiece.
All three of these books are worth buying, but if you can manage to grab this particular book with ALL of them, do NOT hesitate, just DO IT! Any Clancy fan worth his/her salt cannot call their collection complete without this. Just hours and hours of absolute thrilling reading.

This product contains three of the most action packed novels by Tom Clancy: Patriot Games, a book about Irish terrorists bent on killing Jack Ryan, which is far superior to the movie; Clear and Present Danger, which is deeper than the movie, but slower moving, and The Sum of All Fears, which is destined to the theater, has a plot of peace in the Middle East and an excellent ending. Well worth the price.

A well written documentary of the 1996 Superbowl Run by well known Boston Globe Author Bob Ryan. An informative behind the scenes look of each game in a season that was one to remember. Great table piece, doesn't tell the whole story.......2002-03-06
For Patriot fans the 2001 season was a fairy tale...thus it's hard to sum it up in an 120 page book with lots of pictures.
But this book is still a must have...just for those classic pictures, and for Michael Felger's brilliant work...though he said the Pats were not as good as the Colts until after the AFC Title Game. But still the best writer in the City by Far.

This book is an invaluable aide for parents, educators, and professionals dealing with the challenges faced by AD(H)D students in school. It is a book that can be given directly to students as well. Written in a clear, visually appealing format, it presents worksheets and quick exercises that guide the late grade school, middle school or high school student to an understanding of how this disorder affects their ability to learn. It provides information such as how to choose and adopt various study techniques that will help children with AD(H)D become successful students. It coaches students in using active study techniques to remember what they read, or to develop written reports. Students are not resistant to using the concepts because of how they are presented and is a book that has application to non ADHD students as well. I highly recommend this workbook and have found it much more much more useful that the "Putting on the Brakes" book by the same authors. Of all the self help books I have lent out to people, this is one that people use so much they forget to return it! I just keep buying more copies because I don't want to be without the book.

Marta Sgubin came to the United States in 1969 as governess to Caroline Kennedy and John F. Kennedy, Jr. She regarded the move as temporary and was secretly planning to return to Europe very quickly. Twenty-five years later, when Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis died, Marta was still with her.
When she first arrived, Marta was an unusual combination of extreme sophistication and unexpected naïveteé not surprising, since she spent the first half of her young life in San Valentino -- population 400 -- in the north of Italy and the second half in the palazzos and chateaux of various world capitals as nanny and then as companion to the daughter of a wealthy French diplomat. She had always addressed the mother of her French charge as "Madame," in the formal European way. Marta, as she herself says, "confines herself to the kitchen and the dining room." This book is like a glimpse into LIFE ON THE OTHER SIDE..! What elegance!! Mrs. Onassis....what a lady..After perusing the recipes..I wonder how my diet is...(not good) I don't think much of us put the time and effort into the COOKING like the author does..Wow! What a book!

This is an amazing book. You feel like you're right there in the home with them. The public Mrs. Onassis was a very graceful and dignified lady. This book gives you a little peek at another side. I really enjoyed reading that she enjoyed looking at Marta's seed catalogs every spring. Because of these 2 ladies, John and Caroline grew into some very nice adults. The food pictures are so lovely...you want to try each and every recipe. This is such a good format mixing the recipes and memories and telling the stories behind the dishes. This is one book I don't loan to anyone.

like most everyone else i bought this book hoping for more of an inside glimpse into jacqueline kennedy onassis' life wondering what kind of food someone who had been everywhere and experienced almost everything life has to offer would have at home. what a pleasant surprise to find she enjoyed foods all of us can prepare at home without too much muss or fuss. who would have thought shepherds pie or brownies! what i found made the book a must for me though, is the antedote about aristotle onassis and the chocolate cake. i actually laughed. i can see why ms. sgubin fit into this family so nicely because she herself is so charming and kind. i think you'll enjoy "cooking for madame" even if you don't cook simply because it revisites someone we liked having in the world community so much. kudos marta!
Great recipes & a rare glimpse into private family.......2004-04-08
Marta was with Jackie and the children for more than 20 years (I believe she is now working for Caroline and her family). Her recipes are very fresh, healthy, and sophisticated. Yet they are relatively simple and straightforward. The memories she shares with us, along with family photographs, provide a glimpse into the life of this very private family, and show happy times, like birthday parties and summertime meals at Jackie's home on Martha's Vineyard. She tells us about some favorite family dishes, and comes across as very unpretentious, loving, and loyal. Thanks to Marta, I now know how Jackie stayed so thin: most days, when not entertaining, she had a simple lunch of roasted chicken, cottage cheese, and sliced tomatoes. Now where else are you going to find out something like that? The photographs of the food are lovely, too.
Cookbook and memoir.......2003-10-30
While this is an interesting cookbook, the real value is a look into the private life of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis by a valued member of her household. Marta, an Italian who spent more time in France, first came as a French-speaking au pair to tempt the Kennedy kids into learning the language. While that dodge usually failed (she learned English), Marta had other talents. Watching the cooks wherever she went, Marta developed a skill in the kitchen and ended up as Mrs. Onassis' private chef.
Marta treats us to reminiscences about life with Jackie, home photos, and a side of Jackie we never saw in the tabloids. The little hand-written notes of thanks for a mango ice cream show a gracious person with a sense of humor.
The recipes are interesting--Eggs Toupinel is a hollowed-out baked potato refilled with an egg and re-baked. This favorite was served as a lunch for Mrs. Clinton. The information about how food was served and when is also interesting. This is a fascinating peek into the world of a beloved celebrity, and a very fun book to read.
