Book Description
With spot-on details, a smart new voice, and ingenious plot twists, Beverly Connor has been compared to the hottest crime writers on the scene. Now, she ratchets up the suspense with a brand new series featuring one of today's most cunning and complex sleuths: forensic anthropologist Diane Fallon. Her new job as director of the RiverTrail Museum of Natural History in Georgia takes Diane out of the game-until a former love and a murdered family bring her back in.

Fast Paced Mystery Set in Small Southern Museum.......2006-10-23
I was lucky with this series. (I started to read the Lindsay Chamberlain books well into the series although it did not detract from my enjoyment of the ones I have read. However, I actually started at the beginning of this series with this book.
There's lots of descriptions of the plot of this book although I would question the accuracy of some of them, so I just want to say that is a very fast paced stories involving four murders, three in the present and one in the past. The theme is the relationship between child and parent. The book is more complex than any of her other books I have read to date.
Be prepared for an absorbing read.
If you like forensic mysteries you should give this one a go.
One last point though. There are some hanging threads. The author seems to do this as a lead in to future books. One for instance makes a reappearance on the first page of the second book in this series. So don't expect everything to be tied up with a neat little bow-- it just ain't going to happen.
New series off to a frenzied start.......2005-05-15
The heroine, Diane Fallon, is an ex-forensic anthropologist and has inherited the directorship of a new(?) museum, both under circumstances that remain mysterious for long. We are tossed into what feels like the middle of a story where Fallon is a febrile near-hysteric, frenetically trying to get her museum up and running, dealing with a hostile board, hiring staff on whims, and falling back into an apparently old relationship with equally distraught detective Frank Duncan, who now brings her bones she really doesn't want to see. Connor's choice of metaphors--for people, for buildings--is calculated to establish an undertone of threat and horror. These inexplicable doings continue through the first half of the book, by which time enough of the backstory has emerged for the reader to realize this is not the second book in a series. We see that Fallon has some humor, the confusing incidents are beginning to settle into some sense, and the multiple cases in which overlapping sets of characters are involved become engrossing. Connor's gradual shift from psychodrama to forensic police procedural is, I think, a sophisticated way of showing how Diane is getting her life back together. That got this book another star. This book's title, One Grave Too Many, might better have applied to the "first" book implied by the appalling backstory that gradually emerges.
It is difficult to imagine how this can be made into a series, since so much of the trail of clues depends on the colleagues, buddies, or family of Diane or Frank, and so many incidents are highly personal. Maybe the series will develop into a "family sleuths" situation? We never do learn much about Frank's background or earlier relationship with Diane. Here he seems to be inveigling Diane to join him in shady, if not illegal, activities, since he is not officially part of these investigations (the reasons why are another plot thread, one not resolved). In general I think Connor lacks polish and wholly convincing dialogue, indulges in caricatures of subsidiary characters who nevertheless aren't memorable, and has an overwrought, tiring plot with, like, two separate conclusions. The plot features a lot more "action" and plot twists than we have seen in Connor's previous and clever Lindsay Chamberlain (forensic archaeologist) series. I don't know why she has dropped(?) that series, one I enjoyed more than this.
digging up the past.......2005-03-29
A second series by Connor, this one features Diane Fallon, another forensic anthropologist. In ONE GRAVE TOO MANY, she's the new director of the RiverTrail Museum of Natural History in Georgia, leaving forensics in her haunted past, until a lover and a murdered family bring her past back to the present.
I'm sleepy!!.......2005-03-04
I wanted to submit this review because I stayed up until 3:00AM this morning to finish this book. To do that on a weeknight, you have to know that a book is special! Diane Fallon is talented, determined, and caught up in a couple of extraordinary situations which may or may not be connected. She is also recently recovered from a devastating loss which led to depression, but she is well on her way to getting back on track. The information on forensic anthropology is fascinating, and I'm adding her next book to my shopping cart as soon as I close--I think that I'll try to save it for a weekend or a flight somewhere!
Can't Wait For #3.......2004-10-01
I had read a couple of the author's Lindsey Chamberlain books (I enjoy forensic science mysteries), but I was a little disappointed in that series. Good, but I guess I didn't relate to her personality. I had also picked up One Grave Too Many and her next in the Diane Fallon series, Dead Guilty. And I have to say . . . I loved the 1st one. Personally I like multiple plots, it keeps the reader on their toes. I enjoy Diane Fallon's persona and although some of the ongoing crimes may appear a bit much - in all fairness many of the mysteries today seem to be a little "out there". I appreciated her descriptions of some of the scientific work being done and how they go about it; to me that creates an image of what is happening, and how they can decipher answers from 'just an old bone'. I really liked her 'do or die' ethics, undaunted sense of humor and her ability to realize her need to continue to live in the face of the the horrors and tragedy she faced in South America. She also has a more interesting and direct way of interacting with others, and doesn't appear to be as 'thin skinned' as many women in todays novels. She see her enemy, loads 'her guns', aims and fires, and doesn't take unnecessary flack from anyone, but still has a soft spot in her heart for those she cares about. Feisty, independent, determined and intelligent, I like this series very much.

But also, to the dismay of his new wife Sarah, to return to the house he shared with his first wife, Sophia—the house in which she died mysteriously ten years earlier. Was it an accident, as Jon claims, that befell Sophia that weekend in Cornwall? Sarah realizes too late that Jon has reunited everyone who was present that stormy night when she died. And in this nightmarish replay of the deadly events, Sarah has been given Sophia’s role…

nice surprise.......2006-06-09
Expecting this older mystery to be dated and predictable, I was agreeably surprised at finding it engaging and, well, mysterious. Sometimes the outcomes in older books are ridiculously easy to foresee, but The Dark Shore kept me guessing most of the way through. The descriptions of Cornwall are good, and Howatch is a skilled writer, one who improved over time but was never half bad. Enjoyable.
Deja vu.......2005-01-03
I agree with one of the reviewers - this has strains of Rebecca but obviously is nowhere as good as the original. The characters are not well developed and the mystery is unsatisfying. There is a feeling of incompleteness after reading this shorter Howatch novel. However it is fairly well written and the romance between the young, inexperienced Sarah, her husband Jon and the mysterious Marijohn are enough to keep you occupied.
Worth reading.......2001-12-01
A detective story, close to the "How done it?" genre. Most of te time it keeps the reader suspense, although most of the time it gets to imaginary. Certainly, this isn't a "must have" book, but a light and nice book...
Not sure !.......2001-10-23
I normally like all of Susan Howatch's books but I'm not too sure about this one. It's a bit like a junior version of "Rebecca" It's a murder mystery peopled with dark characters and the hero has a mysterious former marriage.I finished it but it left me with an unsatisfied feeling.I found it in an op-shop so I don't suppose that many people will read it these days but I'd love to talk to anyone who does.

Execrable.......2006-08-03
If I could, I would give it zero stars.
This was the worst thing I ever tried to read. It made no sense, the writing was simple-minded and hackneyed, and again, it made no sense, and not in a good (think Hunter Thompson or William Burroughs) way.
? ? ?.......2002-11-23
I got to about page 28 before I chucked this. It reminded me strongly of Vance (on his off-days).
From what I have read I cannot tell if Lord Drev is the Hero or the Villain. He certainly is unlikable enough to be the Archvillain in any book.
Excelent story, but a difficult read.......2001-08-04
The Dark Shore has a wonderful plot and good characters, but it was very difficult to read because of all the description. True, description is important, but most of it (in this book) didn't really fit with the mood of the story. It took me over a month to read (which is a very long time for me).
A very creative and imaginative writer!.......2000-07-12
I never heard of Adam Lee but this writer is now within my top ten list. When I first read this book, it sucked me into a magical world beyond my own imagination. At first, I tried understanding this world than rather getting on with the story. Then, I just kept reading and I was amazed by this writer's creative imagination. I really love this book! It one of those books that I can read over again. Those who gave this book a bad review I think don't have a good imagination. By reading this book I felt my own imagination was the canvas and his writing was the colors of paint. I have to say this is a work of art. A true masterpiece!
Weird.......2000-01-17
I have never read anything so fasinatingly odd. Once you start,Wow. The Dark Shore is the most original epic tales ever spun from the human imagination. A definite five star novel.

A really good read!.......2000-01-15
This is a funny, romantic novel with an interesting edge to it. The edge is multiple personality, but it's the folks with only one personality who are so funny one wonders who's crazy here. The story is set on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The Cheasapeake Bay Bridge figures in the opening and closing scenes; I drove over it last summer and thought what a wonderful metaphor "crossing over" is. A subtle book, for all its humor.
well-written, interesting, with a slight copout at the end.......1998-05-13
I enjoyed this book very much; the characters are well-fleshed (and very disturbing in some cases - the sister, Missy, for example) and not terribly stereotyped. There is no moralizing, no one-dimensional victim, no predictable thoughts or reactions in most cases. I was a little disappointed in the ending, though; it seemed a little too abrupt and tidy. Otherwise, very well done. Some of the writing is just beautiful ("I am the silent half of language," one character says to another at one point). I would certainly recommend it.

Somebody get me a fainting couch...this book is wearisome.......2006-12-09
I bought this book because someone described it as a Scottish "Gone with the Wind" and it just sounded good. The reviews were mixed, but still, it seemed worth a look.
Well, in the end, no, this book is not really worth a look. The story of Vilia, who's father sold her ancestral castle out from under her because of gambling debts and then fights the rest of her life to get it back (not really, but the back cover of the book implies that she does) is just not good as it might have been. The first 200 pages or so are quite good but after that the book just gets into a whole cycle of women being raped by perfectly nice men for no reason and then dying. Almost every character in this book is a terribly person with little or no redeeming qualities. People get mad for stupid reasons; gigantic family secrets that would ruin lives are never exposed out in the open where their dramatic effect would drastically increase the quality of the book.
Anyway, seriously, this book made me tired. It is wearisome. Somebody grab me a fainting couch. The time I spent reading this book could have been better used. Still, because of those first 200 pages, which were good, and a few chapters here and there that spiced things up, I will be generous with my ranking.
Three stars.
HISTORICAL FICTION WITH A PANORAMIC SWEEP.......2004-04-09
Those readers with an affinity for Scotland and an appreciation for the historical fiction genre will certainly enjoy this well-written novel. Reay Tannahill is an excellent writer of historical fiction and this book is no exception. With a multitude of well-fleshed characters, an intricate, generational plot that spans several continents, and numerous historic events, this book will keep all lovers of historical fiction turning its pages.
The book revolves around Vilia Cameron, daughter and only child of Theo Cameron, the Laird of Kinveil, a remote castle in the Scottish highlands. It is Vilia's love of and obsession with this castle, the home of all her forebears that, once lost due to her father's inability to manage its finances, is the driving force in her life and at the core of all her happiness and unhappiness.
While Vilia Cameron and her obsession with Kinveil are the focal point of the novel, another family, the Telfers, plays a large part. When Mungo Telfer, a rich merchant sees Kinveil, steeped with over five hundred years of Scottish history, he falls in love with it. Knowing that Theo Cameron, the current Laird of Kinveil, is financially strapped, Mungo Telfer makes him an offer that he cannot refuse, and so the castle is sold to the highest bidder. That was the day that would live in infamy in the mind of seven year old Vilia Cameron. It is a day that she would never forget, as her beloved home slipped away from her. Yet, curiously enough, Mungo Telfer and Vilia were to form a bond that day that would forever bind the Camerons and the Telfers throughout their lives.
Vilia's desire to have Kinveil in her possession would brook no interference. It was to be hers at all costs. This single, ruthless ambition of hers would drive her throughout her entire life and impact greatly on her life, as well as on the lives of her children and all those whose lives were to become intertwined with hers. Beautiful and driven, she would eventually embark upon a forbidden love that was to never be, as it was supplanted by this driving, burning ambition to be mistress in her childhood home. Her ambition would one day come to fruition, but it would end up costing her more than she could ever have imagined.
This is a well-researched work of historical fiction, in which nineteenth century Scotland comes to life in the author's capable hands, as do its characters, infused with the social mores and beliefs of the era. The book is also interspersed with notable historical events of the day. Of particular interest is the Sepoy rebellion in India, which is told from the perspective of a young woman who finds herself in India through Vilia's clever, though somewhat diabolical, behind the scene machinations. While some of the sub-plots that help move the story along may, at times, strain the reader's credulity, the overall story is one that carries the reader along to its finale. It is one that those who enjoy historical fiction will particularly appreciate, as will those who simply enjoy a good story.
Steadily downhill.......2003-02-22
I bought this book a few months back on a trip to London. Had not previously heard of the author, nor this title. The cover 'comments' proclaim it the Scottish GWTW and also compare it to The Thorn Birds. Big shoes to fill! And.....I thoroughly enjoyed the first 200 pages, would rate them 5 stars. The storyline hooked me rather quickly and the heroine is most appealing. The middle 200 hundred pages or so slowed a bit for my taste and the 'love interest' virtually disappears. At best 3.5 stars. I literally had to force myself to read the final 150 pages of this book. Starting from a terrific, most readable tale I found my enjoyment of the story going rapidly downhill to the point I could almost rate it a 1 by the end. The author seemed to me to forget her basic storyline and was going more for sheer number of pages......a bright beginning to one huge yawn.
Fantastic saga spanning over half a century.......1999-01-08
"A Dark and Distant Shore" is a real masterpiece of its genre. That historical novel is so well-written, the descriptions are breath-taking and the characters well-developed. Even though the book is long (over 1000 pages in the paperback edition), it reads so well because of the story that is simply captivating. Briefly, it is the story of a woman whose father, when she was a little girl, sold the family estate in Scotland. All her life, her goal is to get back that estate from the family that now owns it. To read that book is to acquire a definitive taste for Scotland and its magnificient wilderness. A must!

Customer Reviews:
the stretches in this book really work.......2007-07-14
I have osteo arthritis and fibromyalgia and was in pain daily, both moving and sitting still. After having problems with daily prescription meds, I would take OTC pain meds only when it was too painful to move. After hearing the Doctor on CoasttocoastAM, I decided to give the book a try. It's a miracle, after three months of doing the daily TM's, I am pain free. I can do all the things I haven't been able to do in years. I haven't changed anything else in my life except read this book. Thanks Dr Weisberg!!
Feeling Great!.......2007-07-08
I really enjoyed reading this book and was especially excited to learn about the 6 thirty second exercises that I, as a senior citizen, could do to get my body in better shape. I have been having regular chiropractic treatments for more than 50 years, but now I'm finding that my back is feeling good without them. I suppose I might sometime in the future need to again consult a chiropractor, but for now, I'm feeling great! The exercises are easy to do and because they take only a total of 3 minutes each day, I have no trouble following through and doing them with regularity. I recommended the book to my older brother who has been having severe back pain. Now he is also doing the exercises and feels better than he has for many years.
Taking Responsibility for Your Own Body.......2007-05-12
Dr. Weisberg is a breath of fresh air in an age of victimization. While others push harmful drugs on us to relieve the pain that is an "inevitable" part of aging and everyday life, he provides the rationale and method for taking care of yourself. I'm a believer in trying routines that put the burden of success on me, not a drug or some contraption. I read his book, tried the stetching routine and was immediately rewarded with the elation that comes from a relaxed, smoothworking body. The soreness in my wrists, forearms and back went away. I've greatly increased my daily exercise routine and it feels good. This book is the real deal.
Great Book!.......2007-04-18
I am a 60 year old woman with Fibromyalgia and Osteoarthritis. I have been in chronic pain for 13 or so years. I've tried everything...chiropractic, massage, acupunture, pain medication, chinese herbs, hypnosis, magnet therapy, myotherapy and much more. I came across this book in the library and I was skeptical but interested in what the Doctor had to say. Well, I implemented his program (I figured I could do anything for 3 minutes) and although I had a hard time getting into 2 of the therapuetic movements, after about 3 weeks I am starting to notice a difference. I am so amazed. I still have pain but it's getting better all the time and I am able to move my joints and muscles better. I am very optimistic that this program will eventually get me pain free. Thank you Dr. Wesiberg.
This program works!.......2007-03-07
For those experiencing pain, this is the book to get! I have been doing them more-or-less daily for over two years following treatment for a herniated disc. Before I started them, I could not garden, play with my dogs or vacuum my home. When done regularly, they are amazingly effective at disc repair (yes, that's how good they make you feel), as well as relief of arthritis in my knees and shoulder. Yes, the exercises that Dr. Weisberg promotes are indeed yoga-based, so if you want to spend your money and hours of your time, take a yoga class or buy a yoga video. However, if you want to truly HEAL YOURSELF, then buy this book and do the exercises regularly. Some are difficult at first, so do not try to work past your pain - over time, you will be doing them all and loving the way you feel! What's to lose for 3 minutes a day?

A year later and I still think this book is fantastic!.......2007-09-02
I bought this book a year ago to make some unique holiday gifts, and I'm already excited to start ramping up for this year. Now I have a food processor, so I can give the nut liquors (i.e. homemade amaretto, yum) a shot. We have found these recipes to yield quite delicious results. Our top three so far are the raspberry, vanilla bean, and honey liqueurs. The honey liqueur is the easiest to make, as it is basically a honeyed brandy. The fruit ones are more work, since they need to be strained and then need time to settle. The results are worth it though!
A previous reviewer who did not like the book mentioned the "quickie" recipes using artificial colors and artificial flavorings. Yes, those recipes are in the book, and yes, I've tried some of them. The caramel liquor yielded great results, but the "quickie" raspberry was completely sub-par compared to the real deal. For the most part, I've been avoiding them, although I want to give the butterscotch one a try. The good news is that the book is so full of recipes, I don't feel like skipping them leaves me with less of a book.
Supplies-wise, I bought 2 and 3-quart mason jars from The Container Store. Trader Joe's has a 1 quart bottle of Green Tea in a green glass bottle for $1, and I use those bottles as well as my empty vodka and brandy bottles for recipes that make 1 qt. or less. For gift-giving, I order 5 oz. "woozy" glass bottles with a white lid from www.specialtybottle.com. (Click on "Glass Bottles", then "Sauce", and you'll see a great assortment.) The 5 oz. Woozy starts at $.57 each. I also recommend using their easy to apply Shrink-Wrap Bands.
The book is also chock full of ideas on how to use your liqueurs once made. Just yesterday I added the raspberry liqueur to buttercream icing for cupcakes.
I think this book is awesome. I'll be using it for years to come!
Fantastic!!!.......2006-09-01

Homemade cordials.......2006-08-16
I have been searching the internet for quite some time now and finally found the perfect book. Wonderful receipes with easy to do instructions. While many of the cordials have to age, there are also "quick and easy" liqueur ideas for the impatient that one can drink immediately though they are better after resting for a month. Giftgiving will be so much easier since I bought this book.
These Cordials are Wonderful!.......2005-12-28
I can't really cook, but Cordials I can make.
I have used this book to create several cordials, I even won an award for one strawberry cordial that I made from my brewers guild.
Many recipes say let stand for 1 week or 1 month. I find that most of my cordials taste best after 10 months to 1 year. Even better after 2 years (note: not the cream liquors), so don't throw it out if it still doesn't taste right after 6 months... let it age. I keep notes in this book on how they turned out and what I did differently which makes it even more valuable to me.
It's more than just a cordial recipe book, it's a cordial inspiration spring board.
Awesome...buy it and be creative..........2003-02-06
In an effort to save money this past Christmas, my husband and I decided to get back to homemade gifts. What a hit our homemade liqueurs were! So, we decided it was worth the investment of buying this book and adding to our collection of recipes.
This book contains delightful and different recipes that we are anxious to start making. Things like mango rum, pineapple rum, pear liqueur, cherry liqueur, the list goes on. Our friends and family are now always asking "what's brewing?" and putting in their requests for next Christmas!!!
My only concern is that many of the recipes in this book contain a lot of sugar (which we try to limit.) For gifts, we use the proper recipes, but for home we do experiment with less sugar or equal (next I'll try Splenda) and have had some success.
This book is fun and worth buying, but I won't share it! We've even started making fun and quirky labels on the computer (with a logo too!) to dress up the gifts. People love it! And, we now save all of our small screw top bottles (200-400 mls are perfect) so that one batch of liqueur will yield 4-6 gifts for giving.
