A cross-section of Wimsey's career, but could've been better organized.......2006-07-17
For anyone new to Lord Peter, this book would not be an ideal introduction; the introductory material contains spoilers for the main text, and in any case the selection and order of the individual stories herein isn't ideal for a stem-to-stern readthrough. That said, I myself first made his lordship's acquaintance through STRONG POISON, the first story in this omnibus, and have yet to suffer by it. :) So while the book *could* be closer to perfect, the fact that it contains a triple dose of Lord Peter is sufficient to justify its existence, particularly since it will resist being worn to shreds longer than the individual paperbacks do.
Rather than discussing the individual novels in detail - each is still in print in its own right, and I recommend consulting their individual reviews - I'll discuss this omnibus edition in particular. Discussing them individually is a problem in any case, as the personal complications of STRONG POISON (the first entry) bear directly on HAVE HIS CARCASE (the second).
Often called ON THE CASE WITH LORD PETER WIMSEY, this omnibus edition of STRONG POISON (1930), HAVE HIS CARCASE (1932), and UNNATURAL DEATH (1927) contains not only the full text of each book - including individual tables of contents, author's notes, chapter headings, and the Dawson family tree for UNNATURAL DEATH - but is prefaced by the text of Lord Peter's entry in Who's Who / Burke's Peerage, complete with a partial drawing of the Wimsey coat of arms (the Saracen supporters are missing, but the motto and crest are there). The text of the entry contains a major spoiler for the later Wimsey novels, unfortunately, since it was taken from a post-1936 edition.
The book also contains a separate "Biographical Note, communicated by Paul Austin Delagardie", which dates from 1935, the same year as GAUDY NIGHT. Mr. Delagardie, brother of the Dowager Duchess of Denver, explains how he took charge of his nephew's social education as a youngster only to watch him suffer a disastrous engagement and cruel breakup at the time of the Great War. The fallout was far worse than the "I took up sleuthing as a cure for wounded feelings" patter that Lord Peter himself usually serves up on this topic. However, I warn new readers that as Uncle Paul was writing five years after the events of STRONG POISON, his information can better be appreciated after reading the first two novels in this omnibus.
ON THE CASE WITH LORD PETER WIMSEY has no overlap with its sibling omnibus THREE COMPLETE LORD PETER WIMSEY NOVELS (WHOSE BODY?, MURDER MUST ADVERTISE, and GAUDY NIGHT). Taken together, the grouping of the stories in these two volumes annoyed me very much when they first came out, since GAUDY NIGHT logically should be in the volume before you as the third story, completing the trilogy of Wimsey/Vane courtship novels. As an alternative, swapping the positions of UNNATURAL DEATH and MURDER MUST ADVERTISE would've made sense, as it is the novel following HAVE HIS CARCASE. Even putting UNNATURAL DEATH first rather than last in this book would help, since an associate of Lord Peter's who is introduced in UNNATURAL DEATH has a significant role in STRONG POISON.
Not to put too fine a point on it, the two omnibi naturally go together, and can be a godsend to those seeking to replace disintegrating paperback copies of the individual books. However, anyone wishing to follow Lord Peter's career from the beginning will need to skip back and forth between the two omnibi, with forays into other Wimsey books not included in either collection.
A very good collection, thanks to the excellence of the ingredients, qualified by minor perfectionist grumbling as stated above. Well worth getting and keeping.

Book Description
The mystery writer Harriet Vane, recovering from an unhappy love affair and its aftermath, seeks solace on a barren beach -- deserted but for the body of a bearded young man with his throat cut. From the moment she photographs the corpse, which soon disappears with the tide, she is puzzled by a mystery that might have been suicide, murder or a political plot. With the appearance of her dear friend Lord Peter Wimsey, she finds a reason for detective pursuit -- as only the two of them can pursue it.

A Detestable Burden of Gratitude .......2007-03-05
Carcase is a variant spelling of carcass. To be tried for murder is good publicity for a crime writer. Harriet Vane was busy.
In June Harriet went on a walking tour. On a beach she discovered a corpse. The tide was coming in. She was eight miles from Wilvercombe. Harriet took pictures of the discovery, of particular interest since the body was liable to be carried away on the tide. After walking six miles she called the police and the newspapers to report the existence of the dead body.
Lord Peter arrived to meet Harriet at her hotel, much to her surprise. A journalist had rung him up, it seems. The dead man had been a professional dancing partner, a police inspector told Harriet and Peter. A Mrs. Weldon, friend of the deceased man, sought Harriet's company. She claimed she and the decedent were to be married.
The murder weapon was an Endicott razor with an ivory handle. Wimsey learned from a Mr. Endicott that ivory-handled ones were in short supply. The notion that a bearded man had in his possession an old-fashioned razor of good quality presented a problem.
When the body came to shore there was an inquest, and the investigation of shifting identities began. As in real life, the story thread meanders.
The most interesting aspect of this book is the relationship of Hariet Vane and Lord Peter Wimsey and the author's philosophy of female independence in which their relationship is cast.
Have His Carcasse.......2007-01-05
Dorothy Sayers had the gift of respecting all of her characters. Any one of them (including the villains) could be a member of your family. All were flawed with humanity. The mystery is always secondary to the individuals involved. This is a great read that gets better with each reading.
Going Around in Circles.......2006-10-08
The mysteries of Dorothy L. Sayers are intricate and intelligent, models of perfectly maddening puzzles that readers can barely solve. "Have His Carcase" is no exception, a fine round and round-about mystery that keeps readers (and the two detectives) searching till the final chapter.
The story finds Harriet Vane, recently acquited of murder, on a walking vacation. Mystery has a way of following her, and she encounters a dead body on the beach. Was it suicide or murder? Knowing that the tide is about to come in, Harriet takes pictures and clues to preserve what she can, and searches out the local authorities. Lord Peter Wimsey, gentleman detective, comes to Harriet's aid and also delves into the crime, a case of murder with a baffling array of suspects and alibis. Every clue and every alibi makes a strong case for suicide, but Wimsey knows it to be a murder, if only he could prove it.
"Have His Carcase" is a story with a lot on its plate; the wide cast of characters creates a web of further mystery and cluelessness around the death. This is all layered in with the flirtation between Wimsey and Vane, a delectable pairing of romance and comedy, as Harriet rebuffs Wimsey's marriage proposals at every turn. Sayers is perhaps almost too intelligent in her mysteries, giving her detectives almost unlimited knowledge on a wide range of topics. The chapters involving ciphers are particularly hard to decipher, but do little to distract from the excellent mystery at hand. And while the story does seem to go round and round, it comes full circle in the end.
Great adaptation.......2006-08-24
I love the entire Peter Wimsey series and this is a great adaptation of Ms. Sayers' work. I particularly enjoy Mr. Carmichael's rendition because he has a lovely range of accents and vocal patterns that easily differentiate the characters. His characterization remains solid throughout the entire series -- all of which he has performed for the audio market -- and each returning character's voice is instantly recognizable.
Wonderful mystery entertainment!.......2006-07-27
Sayers once again delivers a solid, old-fashioned mystery story set in the English countryside. The body of a gigolo is discovered by Harriet Vane, who was recently rescued by Lord Peter from being wrongly convicted for murder. Vane is supposedly on vacation--on a walking tour to recover from her ordeal, but ends up investigating a murder instead. Lord Peter is madly in love with her but she does not return his affections.
Vane discovers the bloody body on the beach as the tide is coming in. She rushes to town as quickly as possible to notify the police but is unable to do so before the body is swept away on the tides. Lord Peter comes to stay at the seaside resort to investigate the crime and continue his courtship. While working on the mystery together, Vane's feelings for Lord Peter vary from irritation to camaraderie to a reluctant affection.
Lord Peter is a charming, intelligent sleuth who has met his intellectual match in Harriet Vane. This further installment of his adventures evokes the nostalgic atmosphere of an English seaside town during the early 1930's. It also provides an intricate murder mystery and the growing pains of a passionate relationship. Highly recommended.

Lord Peter and Harriet Vane.......2005-03-31
These four stories are the series of encounters focusing on the relationship of Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane. There is a later novel "Thrones, Dominations" that was finished for Dorothy L. Sayers (posthumously.)
In the first novel "Strong Poison" Lord Peter discovers Harriet while she is on trial for the poisoning of her lover. Naturally Lord Peter knows she is innocent and sets out sleuthing to prove it. Can he prove it in time? All the clues are there and you have an opportunity to beat him to the conclusion. Let's see how good you are.
In the second novel "Have His Carcase" Harriet is on a walking tour and comes upon a body on the beach. If she did not have her camera with her there would be no proof as high tide is coming in. and without a carcass the coroner can not sit. Lord peter steps in to help with the mystery of if it was murder, the "who and how and why" it was done. This story may include Bolsheviks and coconut fiber. Mean time Lord Peter is still perusing Harriet.
In the third novel "Gaudy Night" Which is more of a joyous night or a school reunion. Mysterious threatening notes and acts have been happening at the all-female Shrewsbury College at Oxford, from where Harriet graduated. Because of her reputation she is invited to the Gaudy and at the same time implored to seek out the source. Soon the threats are also addressed to her. Once again Lord Peter hears of this and lends a hand in the investigation. We get to meet his nephew and also learn more of Lord Peter's background and relationship with Bunter his man servant. And Lord Peter is still perusing the aloof Harriet. Will she ever give in?
In the forth novel "Busman's Honeymoon" Finally Harriet gives in and they are married. As a wedding present Lord Peter gives Lady Harriet the house where she was raised. Looks like it is not without its mysteries as one again a body is found in the basement. Again we are presented with sufficient clues to beat Lord Peter to the conclusion. However by the time you get to this novel you will realize that the murder mysteries are all secondary to the true story with is the relationship of Lord Peter and Harriet.

Second story in the Harriet Vane series.......2006-04-11
My first encounter with Dorothy L. Sayers was the Mobile Mystery Theater series showing on PBS. I now have all three DVD's of the series ("Strong Poison", "Gaudy Night" and "Have His Carcase".) They never produced "Busman's Honeymoon" Dorothy sold the rights to Hollywood and BBC could not get them back. The Resulting movie is "Haunted Honeymoon"(1940)
Naturally the TV media cannot fill in all the details that you would pick up from reading the book.
So I read the book. This added more depth to the story, now I appreciate Dorothy L. Sayers more than Agatha Christie. Dorothy not only fleshes her characters out better but her side trips into philosophy and psychology make the story that much more interesting. And just when you say what is the relevance to this conversation it is wrapped up in the final solution.
This is the second of the book series. The story is complete and can be used as a stand-alone story. The notorious Harriet Vane is out for a walk and takes a nap. She wakes up and finds (you guest it) a body. If not for her trusty camera, no one would believe her. As it is the authorities think it was suicide. Wimsey thinks it is murder. Naturally everyone, especially the main suspect has an airtight alibi. The real interest is the interaction between Lord Peter and Harriet.

Book Description
The sky-city of Tyr, floating above the frozen wasteland of a dead world, is a place of spells and skyscrapers, where the ruling council of elders struggles to maintain its power against the growing influence of technology. A clandestine rebellion is underway, assassinating nobles and threatening to topple the Council entirely, while far beneath the city a haunting, malevolent presence from Tyr's mystical past silently gathers strength.
But a far more pressing issue is at hand - for the first time since its founding millennia ago, Tyr has begun falling toward the surface.
Customer Reviews:
If you are having LOTR withdrawels, This is the book for you!.......2007-03-10
Having some serious Fantasy withdrawals and are desperate for a fix that will last, giving you some gratification? If the answer is a resounding "yes" you owe it to yourself (and addiction) to read this book!
The world below the city of Tyr is dead; inhabitable due to the harsh elements of freezing cold temperatures. Any being sustained in that environment is expected to die within hours. So, where do the people live? Why, in a big floating city above the planet! The city is kept afloat with magic and three staves, the city ruled by a council of three elders. Two of the elders are Orthodox and considered harsh in their sentencing. The third elder is young, cool, and hip and believes in salvation; always outnumbered he therefore gives into the harshness of the two senior elders.
Garrett is what the townsfolk would consider a crazy mad inventor. He has wealth and runs factories that many don't understand, nor approve of. He is not comfortable with the fact that the entire city is 100% dependant on the magic of the Elders and their staves to keep the city safely afloat in order to sustain life. He has tried to bring this to the attention of the Elders and found himself talking to deaf ears. He's a bit of an outcast. He's like Gandalf, but no magic, just crazy inventions to make up for his lack of magic.
Carn is a young impressionable young adult male. He holds the magic that some of the population holds, but doesn't like to take it for granted, never relying on it. He stresses the importance on learning the mechanisms of things...how they work. Garrett has taken Carn under is wing and has treated him like the son he's never had. This makes Carn's own father a bit uneasy since Garrett is considered a crazy madman. I would say Carn is like a swift fighter like Luke Skywalker, but has the brute masculinity and leadership qualities of Aragorn.
Isaac is a guard of incredible strength. He works for Garrett. He's also loyal friends with Carn. He's like Samwise and Gimli all rolled up in one.
Elysa is Garrett's only child, beautiful with her long black hair and emerald green eyes. Unlike her father, she possesses great magic abilities that even far surpass Garrett's. Oh, she's definitely the Arwen in the story, except she has green eyes and no pointy ears.
And then there are other important characters in the book, but I don't want to give it all away, I want you to read the book for yourself.
The book is action packed from the get go. There is never a lull in the story. The characters are in for one very long night of hell when the trouble starts with arson of the crops, and things just keep going downhill and getting worse from there. The elders are murdered and the staves are stolen. The city is falling, its atmosphere changing. It's all up to the main characters to save the city and all who dwell within it. As the night moves on, the opponents get stronger and more difficult to take on.
The only criticism I have of this story is that Oliverez finalized it without leaving an open end for a sequel or possible trilogy. The characters and delicate environment were interesting enough to want to know more about these people and what happens next. What will happen to their next generation? Who will take over the council? Sequel please!!!!
Great Story!.......2007-01-24
I have never liked science fiction...that is until now! Superb details, wonderful characters, fantastic plot - this book has it all! Get your copy today! You won't be disappointed!!
Great read!.......2006-11-30
It always amazes me the imagination and ideas that writers come up with - especially in fantasy and sci-fi. Steven Oliverez's world of Tyr is richly detailed and his writing draws you into every characters' move. I love how they all revolve around each other and I love the way Tyr's history comes together! Can't wait to read the next book!!
Great Read.......2006-11-04
I loved the book, normally I don't like these kinds of books but I read this one in 2 days...It has alittle of every thing in it...Well worth the money.
OMG!!.......2006-11-04
LOVED IT. Steven Oliverez has a way of putting the reader in the story. As though you were there in Tyr, watching people go by, hearing each word that is spoken. You could feel the warmth of the sun as if you were walking down the street. As if you, yourself was written in as a character. I truely loved it.

5 Factor Fitness and 5 Factor Diet.......2007-10-04
I find that a number of ingredients in the recipes are not available in Australia, and although the prep time for the meals is said to be 5 minutes, I would say 15 mins is more like it (prep and clean up included)- BUT all recipes have FLAVOUR! I have also adopted his 5 essential ingredients for a meal ie protein, fat, low GI carb, fibre and a beverage - it really keeps you full for longer! The exercises are great, but I add another 30 mins cardio in the end as I had a fair level of fitness before I started and feel I can do a bit more. The one day a week off concept takes the stress out of being good 100% of the time and is much more sustainable over the long run!
A different route, but the same ol' thing.......2007-10-01
I enjoyed this book. I got some useful tips from it. But I had some issues with it. To begin with, the author said it's not a diet. Why, then, is his other book called "The 5-Factor Diet"?
He also said that soup is an okay food. Well, yes. If you make your own perhaps. But no ready-made food that I'm aware of has more sodium in it than soup. The only exception is low-sodium soup and that tastes putrid. And, as we all know by now, salt (sodium) causes bloating and water retention and that's not good. Whether or not it's an issue with blood pressure, I'll leave that to others more qualified to discuss. I personally try and keep it at a minimum. I hate bloat.
He also said that meal replacement drinks are okay. I say some of them are. Most are not. Why? They have lots of trans fats and other ingredients hidden in them that I personally would rather not deal with.
The low glycemic foods interest me. I can buy into that. It's not the fat or other things that create a big ol' fat body, it's the sugar. The sugar comes from all sorts of places like potatoes and other foods. So by cutting down on those things, you can indeed lose weight and feel better.
Now to the 25-minutes a day exercises. I buy that. Twenty or twenty-five minutes of good intensity exercise most days will make you feel better and you can lose weight. No one needs hours of exercise unless they want it. I've lost weight on no more exercise than that. And a combination of cardio and weights is fine. Twenty minutes in the morning makes my day much better and I highly recommend it.
The way he cuts the workouts up into chunks is great. And you truly get a decent workout. He even splits the core up. I've never done that before but I can go along with it.
I don't think this is much different than other plans. The way the exercises are cut up into chunks is appealing and I like that. Most anyone can do that without giving up much.
The diet part, well, you may or may not like it. You will have to buy a different type of food and you will, as another reviewer said, have to spend some cash. It's not a cheap "diet".
I've found that people who go on a low fat diet tend to eat more and gain weight. So I don't cut my fat to the bone anymore. A certain amount of fat is needed for many reasons, which I won't go into. But I advise you to read "The Great Cholesterol Con" for further proved information on this subject.
If you want to lose weight and feel better, read the book. You can take away what will help you and forget the rest. That's what I did. There's no easy solution. And everyone seems to think he or she has the right way to go about it. Then months or years later, the method is proved to be false.
Moderation is the key. I know of no other answer. Coupled with the right sort of exercise, a person can enjoy good health and normal weight.
Wonderful Fitness Book.......2007-09-29
This book is a great read. Really smart nutrition info. I've already reached my goal weight through diet and exercise and I use the fitness program to maintain. My body is definitely more toned and my abs are tighter and jiggle free. Despite the smart nutritional information, I don't follow it. Thankfully that hasn't impeded my muscle tone. I just eat the proper amount of calories for my weight and activity level (you can look it up online).
Love the exercise plan!.......2007-09-10
I have been following the basic exercise plan in this book since June. I do at least 30 minutes of cardio if not more though. The weight training portion of this book is great. It shows a photo of exercise and then gives you a mental clue so you have the right motion (Example: lift weights as if you are cheering for your favorite team). Now that I can do!
I have not tried the diet. I did read the chapters but when I looked for some of the items in the store I didn't have any luck. I live in Alabama, not California so some of the stuff is just not available here! Instead I have been following a no sugar/low carb diet and have lost 30 pounds.
While I still have a bit more to lose, my body is in great shape due to this book. The strength training has made a tremendous difference in my appearance and in how I feel. Very glad I purchased this book! It was much cheaper than paying a personal trainer a few days a week!
Just the other day while I was at the gym someone asked me who my trainer was? When I said I didn't have one and never had they seemed shocked. They replied with "but you're doing all the right things and you look great". I pulled out the book and said 16.95! You can't buy 20 minutes with a trainer for that!
If you are looking for an exercise plan that you can fit into your busy day--this is the one!
Gets you motivated.......2007-09-01
This exercise program is clearly demostrated. For once, I look forward to doing exercises in the morning. They don't take long and you can actually feel their effectiveness from day one. Each day changes routine so you don't fall into a rut. Am not an exercise freak, gyms are hard to get to, so this program worked out fine for at home. Not much equipment to invest in and his eating program was what my doctor had already prescribed. I'll up date in a few months to give feedback and extended benefits of program.

I did my best but the guests hated the Hors D'Oeuvres.......2003-01-09
The guests hated the finger food and I would think there are better books on the subject. I am terrified to visit the golf & tennis club after the dinner debacle. Maybe Martha's finger food was well received in Nutley, NJ but in Short Hills it was another story.
Wellll--.......2001-11-28
This is great if you have all the time and money to spend on Hors D'Oeuvres--I would not buy it again, but it was fun to look at.
Solid First Course Helper of a Cookbook.......2001-02-04
I've enjoyed this one so much {'ve moved on to her new Hors d'Oeuvres Handbook. However, this one has much in it, so to get this one as well and use it.
Some of my all=time favorites are here: Apples with chicken liver pate, Orange muffins with Smoked Turkey, and Roquefort Grapes.
I find this a useful book in its structure by function: Tea Party, Christmas Cocktails, Outdoor Barbe, etc. Bonus as in all her cookbooks, fantastic clear photos and marvelous creative ways to serve an eye=catching, tastebud wowing first course!
Tastes as good as it reads!.......2000-01-19
This is a fabulous book. I received it as a Christmas gift when it was first published. I read and re-read the recipes, and was frankly overwhelmed. Not by the recipes, but the pictures. So, I fantasized about making the foods. I didn't venture to attempt the recipes for several months.
I attended a reception at the Schomburg Center in NYC, and as I ate the great foods, I had a sense of dejavu. I thought, "Oh my goodness, these are the Martha recipes." I quickly asked a member of the wait staff for more info on the horsdouvres, and sure enough, they came from this book. After that, I went to the kitchen, and began cooking.
These are some of the most reliable recipes you will ever have. The instructions are perfect, and you too can create these marvelous dishes. To quote you know who, "It's a good thing."
P.S. I loaned my book out, and never got it back. I am ordering a new one from Amazon.com.
Great hors d'oeuvres, if you have the time.......1998-08-04
As much as I like Martha Stewart, I have to say - Who has the time to entertain like that? Martha's recipes are great, but not all are simple. Entertaining should be easy and fun. Not complicated with hard to find ingredients.
