Book Description

Debra White Smith (more than 1 million books in print) presents book #4 in her popular Austen series. Based on Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey, Northpointe Chalet focuses on the scatterbrained but independent Kathy Moore who opens a coffee shop in a small town in Colorado.

When Ron and his sister, Liza, come by, Ron is attracted to Kathy. Oblivious to romance, Kathy enjoys their friendship. Kathy’s brother, Sam, and Liza start dating, and naturally the four of them socialize. Then Ben arrives, and there’s instant rapport with Kathy...to Ron’s chagrin and Liza and Sam’s ire.

In Kathy’s life, the line between the mysteries she reads and reality sometimes blurs. Discovering that Ben’s mother died mysteriously, Kathy investigates. Tension mounts as suspicion interferes with her relationship with Ben.

3 out of 5 stars A little cheesy.......2007-07-05

Without even comparing this book to one of Jane Austen's it still came up wanting. I wanted to like the characters but had a hard time identifying with them. I am single in my 20's and kept thinking that the characters were just a little too cheesy to be real.
It was nice, however, to read a book that was "clean" through and through.

3 out of 5 stars Fun but no Austen.......2006-11-07

Hving read many if not all of Debra White Smith's Austen series I thought this one as close to the original as she has gotten. The book was cute. But the main character seemed more shallow and less engaging than Jane Austen's orginal Catherine. By directly correlating this book and the others to Austen I think I was predisposed to judge it by the original. So Nothpointe Chalet is fun, comfortable read and should be read as that and not a revisit of Northanger Abby.

1 out of 5 stars Loved the original- this can't touch it.......2006-08-09

I read the first 50 pages, hoping the whole time that it would get better. I had previously read Central Park and really enjoyed it. When I saw a re-write of Northanger Abbey I thought that it would be a winner but the juvenile, overly simplistic writing style was extremely aggravating and annoying. I couldn't bring myself to read any further and waste anymore time bothering to find something worth continuing for. Such a disappointment! I'd recommend sticking with the originals. For Austen fans, the Gentleman trilogy by Pamela Aidan is quite good.

3 out of 5 stars Okay quality, bad representation of Austen's characters.......2006-03-10

The book as a story (without counting the Austen side) is fair. The writing is not first-rate or absorbing. The characters are not especially wonderful.

As a modern rewrite of Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, it falls short. The changing of setting and characters very much takes away from the charm of Jane's original. Lovers of Northanger Abbey will be disappointed with a less young and naive reproduction of Catherine, who is somewhat enjoyable but quite different. But much worse will be their disappointment with the new Henry Tilney. Lovers of "Da Man" (tall, almost handsome but not quite, teasing, great-coated), who is portrayed in Jane's Northanger, will more likely (I feel) be angry and outraged to find a man who seems to be more like the Henry Tilney in the 1986 adaptation of Northanger than the real Man. Ben Tilman is rarely teasing, and though smart enough, he has not the intelligence or quick wit of Da Man. It's really too bad, because a modern Henry Tilney, brought over to this century without any missing character traits, would be a delight to read.

It is a book to take out from your library, probably a bit of a waste of money to buy. Of interest to Janeites, but those from "The Cult of Da Man" (LOL) might want to stay away.

3 out of 5 stars Missed the heart of Northanger Abbey.......2006-03-01

I love Northanger Abbey, so was looking forward to this story since I liked Central Park so much. I started this series out with Central Park, which sticks to the heart of the Jane Austen story more closely than the rest of her stories do. I felt that Debra really dropped the ball with this one, though. Perhaps I was just expecting too much.

In Northanger Abbey, our heroine is naive and sheltered, longing for adventure and her idea of what adventure is has been formed by the thrill and horror novels she loves. Her instincts warn her against those who only wish to use her, yet she doesn't pay attention and is duped in some of her friendships. In Northanger Abbey, our hero is well-educated, kind, and has a teasing humor. He is flattered by her open admiration, interest, and trust.

Yet in Northpointe Chalet, Debra changes all that. Our heroine is scatterbrained, wildly outgoing, and can spot the bad guys a mile away. There are no innocent questions or excuses from her made for other's bad behavior. Instead, she's the one issuing the warnings to the numbskulls who can't see the scheming going on! Our hero is still well-educated, but emotionally jerks our heroine around quite a few times and lacks much humor at all.

What I love about Northanger Abbey is 'watching' a fanciful, imaginative young woman who wants to live one of her exciting novel's stories slowly coming to realize that life is more than storybook. By the end she has matured into a level-headed woman our hero really can love for herself. Northpointe Chalet was a good enough story in itself, but the main characters really don't grow very much nor are that admirable or honorable. This time I feel that the author has missed the heart of Jane Austen's story.

La obra más simple y bella de Coelho.

5 out of 5 stars "Lovely, awesome book".......2007-10-02

I totally loved this book!!! Brida is an Irish young woman, who like Santiago, the Alchemyst, is also in search of her personal legend!!! She had to follow her heart! Although it was scary at times she pursued her destiny, she wanted to be trained in the Wican tradition! She found a teacher from the tradition of the Sun, and another from the tradition of the Moon, she learnt what she had to learn from both of them!!!
A story about reincarnation, and soulmates, and about the women who were midwives and healers and were accused of being witches and were persecuted and killed, some time ago!!
I think this is another masterpiece of Paulo Coelho, I read it in Spanish, I wish this book is translated to English some time soon, so it'll be available to more people to read, I'll definetelly read it again!!!

5 out of 5 stars El mejor libro, The best book.......2005-09-29

Brida is a great story about the search of answers to your questions, about the quest for love and happines, and realizing your dreams by folowing your heart, told in a very clear way and easy to read and understand.I strongly recomend this book to everyone who believes that we need our other half to reach total hapiness.
i would have given it 7 stars if i could but 5 was the top.

    5 out of 5 stars THE BEST.......2004-02-23

It's one of the best books I EVER READ.

    5 out of 5 stars Genial!.......2002-10-18

Como nao poderia deixar de ser, Paulo Coelho mostra ao mundo uma obra genial. Eu sou fan incondicional do trabalho dele e recomendo suas publicacoes a todos os amantes da boa leitura.
Paulo Coelho is a genius. The best brazilian writer nowadays. This book is wonderful, just like all the others by the autor. I recomend this and all other titles by him, to every one who enjoys a good book.

    5 out of 5 stars Twin souls..........2002-02-05

I firmly believe that everyone has another part, some people fortunately find it but others have to wait a lot or they never got it.
Coelho describes these in a beautiful way, but, this book is not for everyone, only for those who believe that it's necessary to find the other half to be completely happy...

      Book Description

On the eve of the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York City, a political fixer named Flanagan receives an unwelcome assignment: find out what happened to his boss's lover before his wife does. As a wave of conservatives descend on a prickly, pugnacious Manhattan, Flanagan gets caught in a whirlwind of sexual secrecy, murder, and the dark acts of a political party bent on empire. From the political influence of Joey Ramone to the restless, heated energy of New York in August, the raw political friction and firecracker sexuality of G.O.P. D.O.A make for a racy, briskly paced mystery and a summer no one will soon forget.

Dr Cass Ingram is a revolutionary author and "discoverer" of oil of oregano. That is, he is the one most responsible for putting this profound substance "on the map" for the world to see a better option of self-care to optomize their health. In my opinion, every house needs this book! (and it wouldn't hurt if a few doctors read it too.) The benefits of the knowledge for using the product is the kind one wonders had they only "known", for getting at the cause of most health issues. Giving the book would also be a profound way of saying "I care" to anyone special, you first. You won't regret the investment. A. Prouty

This was suggested reading by a dear friend. We have found many of the claims to be true and are now an "oregano" family. Thanks Cass!

I began using the dried oregano product (OregaMax) for health and immunity. A beautiful side effect was that my skin began clearing up almost immediately. That was one month ago. No only has my skin improved....my skin is totally clear. In the 37 yrs I've suffered with this, no doctor has ever mentioned oregano to me. Cass Ingram and Dr. Richard Becker DO are highly thanked by me.

3 out of 5 stars Some good information.......2007-02-23

The information on oregano is really good. It is sad that the author has used his book as a springboard for advertising his company and cutting down everyone else. I'm sure that there are a lot of good sources of oregano oil besides his company. One needs to know how to find those also.

                        Book Description

Dinner After Dark is much more than a collection of great recipes: It’s a recipe for a great party, featuring stylish cocktails, stunning interiors, creative tabletops (hint: almost no cut flowers), and even advice on music, place cards, and the art of being a gracious host and guest. This is mostly cookbook, but also part decorating, part bartending, part etiquette, and part plain old bon-vivant-ism.

The recipes are drawn from Colin Cowie’s sophisticated international palate, focusing on the exotic. The Peri-Peri dinner offers Saketinis to start, then moves on to Curried Mussels in Coconut-Milk Broth, red-hot Peri-Peri Chicken with green olives and preserved lemons, and a luscious Orange Custard Tart. The Cuba Libre cocktail party features Escabeche of Swordfish, Picadillo in a Lettuce Cup with Fresh Tomato Salsa, Plantain Chips, and Arroz con Camarones, all washed down with Mojitos and Cuba Libres. And the intriguing Bombay Soirée includes an appetizer of Stir-Fried Shrimp with Lemon and Scallions and an entrée of Chicken Curry and Peas, served with three different cooling raitas, Mango Chutney, Pappadams, and Aromatic Basmati Rice.

What’s remarkable about the hundred recipes is that the dishes rely on spices rather than fats, on delicious pairings instead of interminable ingredient lists. Even more remarkable is that nearly every recipe can be prepared in less than an hour, and almost none requires last-minute cooking, allowing you to be a guest at your own party.

Each party will be a fabulous one, with fun, helpful features such as: 911, entertaining emergencies and how to solve them; 411, information calls, like what a tagine is or how to trim an artichoke; OTT (Over the Top), on how to make the evening truly spectacular; and A Lighter Touch, on adapting recipes for less fat, or simply to be less heavy. All of this is presented in Colin’s inimitably stylish, irrepressibly fun voice that’s both entertaining and informed.

Each party takes place in a uniquely beautiful location, from spectacular New York City apartments to an oh-so-very L.A. Modernist house to the beach in East Hampton. The guests are smiling and glamorous and having a good time, the decors and tabletops and food are extraordinarily appealing—you want to be there. Not only will Dinner After Dark transport you, it’ll allow you to bring the party to your own home.

                        5 out of 5 stars Jetsetters cookbook.......2003-10-07

So you've been to France, Japan, Italy, Cuba and Russia and whatever hot international destination, or do you just want to eat and entertain like you have? This book let's you do this. Its really thorough- from making cocktails to setting the table, to making theme based dinners. The recipes are thorough too - you can have a country type garlic chicken (inexpensive) but you'll also reach for this book when you want to treat yourself to caviar (expensive). This is not the Joy of Cooking. My only complaint is some of the dishes are "heavy" and this is not a cookbook for the sake of a cookbook (some recipes are hit or miss)- there are better ones - and do take MUCH MORE THAN AN HOUR. My husband complains that its too rich. Maybe his model thin guests actually don't eat what he prepares? Also, I have his other Cookbook. Between these two, I am ready to entertain for any event. That one is more "practical" since it has non dinner recipes. If you are going to entertain to the Jet Set crowd you should get this one. For production & style & menu ideas , it lets you dream.

I was delightfully enchanted with Colin's newest book. Having read his previous publications, I was very pleased with Colin's creativity and design style. I am always pleased with the calibre of design in all his books, but I find I am always left wanting more. Everyone has a favourite, some old hat, some new and hip to contemporary fads, but Colin is timeless, creative, and mindful of your budget. He's a Creative genius and I truly enjoyed this book. It sits on my desk at work where people come by to borrow it and have a hard time returning it!

I have to be upfront and say that basically, I don't like this guy. More's the pity for me because he has style in spades. The menus are at times great, at times bs, but it is the setting in which he casts them that sets him apart.
There is much to admire in how the entire look of this book comes off. I'm in the catering business and so I recognize why it is important to light and display the dishes as he does. I also know that, at least in Philadelphia, there are maybe 4 people who can afford this stuff.
Still, it's fun to dream. I fully expect that some self-satisfied gourmand of an SUV-driven horse farm owning young republican wag will be waving this tome in front of me insisting I recreate the magic herein for $30 a head.
But I'll try my best not to blame Cowie. I still can't tell if he actually does perform these parties (note I did not say 'cater'), or whether it is all MS photo shoots. They might be real, not everyone in these photos looks that great. Or maybe they just don't stand a chance next to the food, the linens, the candles, the china, etc......
