Imagine Nick and Nora Charles with a taste for politics and none for gin, and you'd be pretty close to Mary Higgins Clark's Henry Parker Britland IV and his attractive young wife, Sandra O'Brien Britland, known as Sunday. Henry, possessor of an enormous inherited fortune and known as one of America's sexiest men, has just finished his second term as president of the United States and is happily retired at 44, puttering around his New Jersey country estate. Sunday, who bootstrapped her way up from a modest working-class background, is a junior congresswoman with a reputation for smarts. The two met, romantically enough, on the eve of Henry's leaving office, fell madly in love, and were married six weeks later. In this collection of four pleasantly readable stories, the sleuthing duo catch the murderer of a statesman's flashy amour, endure Sunday's kidnapping and mastermind her rescue, solve the 34-year-old mystery of the disappearance of a foreign prime minister from the Britland family yacht, and reunite a ransomed boy with his parents at Christmas. Of the four, "They All Ran After the President's Wife" may be the best plotted, and has a particularly amusing McGuffin in the character of a caviar-loving terrorist. While the suspense is on the mild side throughout, the romance is lighthearted but sincere, and the occasional flashes of wit are dryly appealing. It's a bonbon, to be enjoyed for its brief sweetness. --Barrie Trinkle
Book Description
A dashing ex-president and his young congresswoman bride become an irresistible sleuthing duo in four acclaimed stories from the Queen of Suspense.
Henry Parker Britland IV -- wealthy, worldly, and popular -- is enjoying an early retirement. His new wife, Sunday -- as clever as she is lovely -- has just been elected to Congress in a stunning upset victory that has made her a media darling. Henry and Sunday make a formidable team...and never more so than when they set out to solve baffling high-society crimes. From a long-unsolved case they reconstruct aboard the presidential yacht to a kidnapping that brings Henry frantically back to the White House, the former president and his bride engage in some of the most audacious and original sleuthing ever imagined. Only Mary Higgins Clark can so seamlessly meld spellbinding suspense, wit, and romance. My Gal Sunday is entertainment of the highest order.

Less than Ms. Clark's Best.......2007-08-08
My neighbor gave me this book. I suppose she remembered that I had told her that I had read several of Ms. Clark's novels. I have read her works but they were her earlier novels which I enjoyed. However I thought "My Gal Sunday" was a disappointing read. I actually had to force myself to finish this book. The husband and wife team were so sweet and dear that I thought I was reading a grade school story. The short stories didn't hold my interest and was glad to finish this book. Definitely not Ms. Clarks best. I'm sorry to say, there are no recommendation here. I'll probably try her new release just to see if her writing style has improved.
EHH...NOT MY CUP OF TEA.......2007-03-29
as a mary higgins clark fan... i didnt enjoy this book that much it has 3 different stories in it, but i didnt find it that interesting..
What a Bomb.......2006-02-06
I've read quite a few of Ms. Clark's books in the past and have been impressed with her writing, particularly her earlier books. But this one seems to have been phoned in, and I'm seriously wondering if the author didn't use a ghost writer.
The story lines have already been discussed by other reviewers, and I'd agree that the stories are boring and predictable. The main characters are remininscent of Nick and Nora Charles without the booze, but the former president seeems whiny and not at all presidential. He's passed off as a 44-year-old former president who served his two terms and is now living the life of leisure with his congresswoman wife. Given these numbers, he had to have started campaining for his job before the age of thirty-five, when he could have legally taken office. Hard to believe that someone this young was the most qualified candidate.
Now for the gaffs. What president, past or present, would call the Russians "Soviets" and wouldn't know that the federal penitentiary at Marion is in IL, not Ohio? There are numerous other mistakes that should have been caught in the vetting process, leading me to believe that this book never saw a competent editor.
Bottom line: A sorry book from such a well-respected author.
An Underrated Book! It's Great!.......2005-06-21
Wow, I can't believe all of the bad reviews for this book! I thought My Gal Sunday was good and I liked the heroine Sunday who by the way is nothing like Elle Woods of The Legally Blonde movies and is 100% smarter than Elle and is not a bimbo and is not a bubble head!
Read at your own risk - and only if you liked Legally Blonde.......2004-07-08
Henry Parker Britland IV is the ex-president of the United States. Newly married, he wants nothing more than to relax with his beautiful young wife. Unfortunately, the ex-president seems to attract trouble, and in MY GAL SUNDAY, he and his new wife find themselves in the middle of three precarious situations. Three short stories comprise this short book, and the mysteries seem to get progressively worse.
I read one novel by Mary Higgins Clark prior to this one, and my expectations were high. However, I was incredibly disappointed with these three short mysteries. They were predictable, dull, and uninteresting. And worse, the endings were sudden, leaving me with the distinct impression that the story didn't so much end, but that Mrs. Higgins Clark had run out of things to say. Hey, maybe she became as bored with the characters while writing as I did while reading. Mr. Ex-President was much too whiny for my taste, while his lovely wife seemed more like Elle Woods in Legally Blonde than the wife of a president in her own right.
The book's only redeeming quality is that it's a quick read. At only 206 pages, it'll only kill one afternoon out of your life.

Book Description
This postmodern historical novel addresses power, sex, and the role of the imagination in constructing social realities. Adam Avatar has been, among other incarnations, a Spanish priest, a slave trader, a white indentured servant, and a female pirate. In each incarnation, however, he is killed at age 50 by his nemesis the Shadowman, a fate he hopes to elude in his life as a Caribbean everyman, with the aid of a psychiatrist. The historical periods of his life are vividly portrayed with Joycean grasp of historical voice, examining the wrongs of each period and discovering the malleability of individuals in different social environments.

Customer Reviews:
Great book to reference what foods to start feeding your baby.......2007-10-09
As a first time mom, this book served as a guideline of what foods to feed my baby first since my doctor wasn't much help. I knew to start with veggies then fruit from my doctor's advise because babies tend to like sweet food first. My daughter is now 7 months and using the food index in the back of the book to know how to create simple pureed foods has been very helpful. I highly recommend it to any new mom.
Love it!.......2007-05-12
I purchased this after my daughter was born. We have loved all the recipes so far...especially the meat loaf (and my husband doesn't usually like meatloaf). It also has great baby food recipes and advice for the first year. I will be using many of these recipes after the kids are grown! Great purchase!
Disappointing.......2007-03-30
The recipies for younger babies look great. But I got this to get some ideas for healthy foods for my young toddler to eat. He is 15 months. He is not too picky but after skimming through this book, page after page, I thought, There is no way he is going to eat that... Not that I mind getting him to try new foods but I don't have the time to prepare a recipie only to have him refuse it. Ginger? Scallions? Red bell peppers?
This book will work well for people that really make time in their lives to cook. Dough from scratch? How do you people have time to do this???!!!
Furthermore, I strongly disagree with the author's frequent use of peanuts and peanut oil as well as foods that are conducive to choking like raisins and celery.
The recipies in this book are not good for young toddlers at all. They are however, better for older children around 4-6+
Like one reviewer said, how is my kid, who doesn't have molars, supposed to eat a salad???
Stupid. But the infant recipies look pretty good. would not purchase again...
Excellent baby and toddler food resource.......2007-02-13
I have a three-year-old and an eight-month-old, and am very concerned with feeding them healthful and tasty foods. "Mommy Made and Daddy Too!" is probably the only book I'll need. I have about 20 cookbooks, and out of all those, this is the one I use most frequently. It gives guidelines on the kinds of nutrition babies and toddlers need, when to wean, when to introduce foods, how to make and store baby food, among other things.
There are many recipes, basic baby food purees, more advanced baby food combinations, toddler meals and snacks, such as a recipe for fruit leather (like Fruit Roll-Ups) healthful cakes and cookies, and some neat ideas like putting cottage cheese and fruit in an ice cream cone. There are also lots of ideas for quick dinners, and the best products to buy for quick breakfasts and snacks. Others recipes I liked were the iron-rich broth, Vitamin C salad, and meat loaf (theirs is a very good recipe!). Moms interested in providing their kids with good, nutritious home-cooked food will love this book.
Great baby food book!.......2007-01-28
This book is wonderful! I bought this book several years ago when my daughter was an infant. (She is now 11 1/2.) I used it so much and got so much great info from it. I would make a big batch once a month of several different foods and freeze them for a month's worth of meals. I also have loaned my copy out to many new parents who all enjoyed it. We are now finally having a second baby and I look forward to going through my book again. It goes all the way through toddler years so you can use it for quite a long time. All my other baby books have been packed up in storage but this book has always been on the bookshelf in our house. If you only buy one book about making your own baby food, this is it!

Customer Reviews:
This book will change the smell of your house........2007-04-27
It turns out that even an average American mom like me can make great Indian food. In the two months since my sister gave it to me as a birthday gift, I have made many recipes from this book. While I cook, the house smells like an Indian restaurant. My three young kids have willingly eaten most of the meals--they're that good.
This is not some sort of foo-foo picture book written by a well-known chef. It's a rubber-meets-the-road sort of book by a real mom. The book is a sensible size for setting on the counter while cooking, and the binding stays open fairly well. The author includes a shopping list ("The Healthful Indian Pantry"), which is very helpful. Each chapter has an interesting introduction that provides a cultural background for the food. Most of the recipes are actually vegan, and when they are not, the author includes adaptations to make the recipe vegan. For anyone who lives nowhere near an Indian market, at the end of the book there is a list of addresses for mail order. And, of course, there is an index and glossary--also helpful!
Too bad the publishing company has such a generic name that it's difficult to run a search for all their other books. If they're all as good as this one, I want to buy more.
Simple and delicious.......2007-01-12
Indian cuisine is really the only cuisine I know anything about. Growing up in London and being vegetarian have something to do with it. This is my favorite Indian cook book. It is also the one I give to friends interested in starting to cook Indian food.
What makes this book outstanding is the simplicity of most of the receipes, and the way the author elucidates the reasons for putting this spice in before that one, or using this ingredient rather than that one. The layout is excellent, and the drawings add a touch of elegance. A superb book!
The Real Deal.......2006-01-07
Background: I grew up eating Indian vegetarian food. Sometimes it was good, sometimes mediocre, occassionally fantastic. I had kichadi for breakfast and dal-chawal-roti-sabji for dinner every day except festival days.
Bias: I will admit a bias that I actually met the author; I went to high school with her son and was lucky enough to have dinner at her house once.
Review: This is the absolute, number one, best Indian cookbook on the market today. I own most of the big ones and many little ones, and nothing else out there even approaches this book for utility and quality. Most cookbooks offer a good base for a recipe, but you have to make it once and then adjust and improve it. All the recipes in this book are excellent as written; I have not had to modify any of them! There's no padding in this book. She doesn't include every Indian recipe you've ever (and never) heard of, but she does include all the basics you need to eat well every day. This is the only time I have seen okra treated properly in a cookbook, and the recipe for pakora batter is phenomenal. Her style is authentic Gujarati-style cooking. Having spent some time in Gujarat and eaten at many Gujarati houses, I should know.
All in all, a highly recommended resource for any kitchen. Having eaten at the author's house, I can attest that her cooking is excellent, authentic Indian vegetarian cusine, and she used the same recipes included in the book. She is the real deal.
vegetarian delights.......2002-10-04
If you're a vegetarian, a few Indian recipes are a great thing to have in your culinary repertoire, and this book has some tasty and easy to make dishes that are nutritious, aromatic, nice to look at, and even better to eat.
Even if you don't like Indian cuisine, you'll get a lot out of the rice and lentil (dal) chapters. It gives a tremendous amount of information on both these items, their many different types, and how to cook them to perfection.
The "Dal-Based Dishes" is a superb chapter, and one can even "mix and match" these recipes and come up with a delightful side dish.
Other good chapters are "Snacks" (oh ! those heavenly samosas !), and the many pages of veggie recipes...you'll also get a lot of info on spices and ingredients.
Most of the spices and ingredients are available in any good supermarket, although if you're lucky to live in an area with an Indian market, you'll find the same items, usually for a fraction of the cost.
I have the 1972 hardcover edition to this book, and though the chapters have been moved about, the contents in this edition are almost the same. With all my many moves, I don't have a lot of cookbooks, but this one will always be a keeper.
Oh my god.......2000-12-02
This is the best Indian cook book ever! It's packed with information, yet not overwhelming. Every recipe is perfect and dances with flavor in your mouth.

Book Description
The Indian Vegetarian features more than 300 recipes of the zesty meatless dishes Neelam Batra has cooked all her life. Batra translates India's wide range of vegetarian dishes for home cooks, combining authentic Indian spices with local produce and simple cooking techniques to create exciting, satisfying, healthful dishes, ranging from classics to originals. Following a primer on Indian spices and flavorings,
The Indian Vegetarian features more than 130 recipes for quenching beverages like Sparkling Limeade, a savory array of appetizers and snacks, piquant salads such as Fresh Spinach Salad with Cumin Yogurt Dressing, and vegetables in all their glory — Pumpkin with Fenugreek Seeds, Royal Eggplant with Garlic and Spices, New Potatoes with Ginger and Cilantro, to name just a few. There are recipes for cooling yogurt dishes like Barbecued Zucchini in Yogurt with Sauteed Mustard Seeds, homemade low-fat cheese preparations, and hearty bean and rice recipes like Black-Eyed Peas with Garlic and Scallions, and Rice with Basil and Sun-Dried Tomatoes. There is also an extensive section on condiments, side dishes, and dressings including Hot and Sour Chili Pepper Chutney, and Cilantro Coconut Chutney. Sauces for vegetables (or meats if there are carnivores in the family) include Fresh Mango and Ginger Sauce, and Tomato Mustard Sauce. Luscious desserts like Cashew and Saffron Rolls and Orange Peel and Almond Cookies are a sweet coda. The Indian Vegetarian is one of the most complete and satisfying books of its kind on the market.
Praise for The Indian Vegetarian:
"Congratulations to Neelam! She has written a comprehensive book on the fascinating tradition of Indian vegetarian cooking. By combining the bright palate of fruits and vegetables available to us today with her knowledge of traditional cooking techniques learned in India at her mother's knee, she has created a very fresh and appealing style of vegetarian cooking."
— Viana LaPlace, author of Verdura and The Unplugged Kitchen
"Ever since I first saw Neelam Batra teach a cooking class twelve years ago and tasted her food, I have been hoping she would write a book of her delicious recipes.
The Indian Vegetarian was definitely worth waiting for. Neelam makes fabulous Indian cuisine accessible to busy, health-conscious cooks. If you are interested in adding wonderful vegetable dishes to your menus, you will love this book."
— Faye Levy, author of Faye Levy's International Vegetable Cookbook and The New Casserole
Customer Reviews:
Decent cookbook, but nothing special.......2005-09-28
After owning this book for about two years, I am still a bit ambivalent about this cookbook. Most of the recipes are actually decent, and the major different between this and a traditional book is that this book use less oil in deference to today's health-conscious eaters. However, I have to say I wish the author offered a bit more of a guidance for those just venturing into Indian cuisine. I have had some cooking basics when I first started with this, but not in any type of Indian cooking, and let me just say that the first few times (as in first 3 months) I blotched up horribly anytime I tried anything from this book. It was by the long process of trial-and-error that I finally got my technique down. Also, there are absolutely no pictures in this book, and many times I have to guess when the dish was actually done. It didn't help that everything came in 8-serving sizes that makes cooking even more difficult for beginners.
My other complaint about the book is the way it presents the material. If you're not accustomed to cooking with spice, the long list of spices in a recipe looks intimidating. The author does nothing to dispel such perception. In the two years which I struggled with this book, I never understood how and why spices were used, much less grasping any systematic method to spicing. It was not until I met an Indian friend, who basically taught me the basic spicing principle over the course of 3 days, that I understood spicing was not a random compilation of esoteric plant parts.
The recipes themselves were decent, though I have yet to locate a standout dish that make this book a must have. Usually in my favorite cooking books I always locate a few absolutely delightlful recipes that made me want to keep the book even if I make nothing else from it for a year. So far that hasn't occured with this book.
To sum it up, if you want standard Indian dishes, and a few dishes that has been adapted toward the American living habit, and have some background in Indian cooking, this book will suit your need. If you are like me, who loves trying different foods but not in the 'catered' form, or need very clear directions in a cookbook, I would suggest trying another cookbook first.
Indian food for Americans.......2003-10-30
Marrying Indian with American cuisine in recipes which can be served in an American menu as well as Indian, Batra offers barbecued eggplant in yogurt, okra stuffed with spices, curried baby potatoes, soybeans in curry sauce, cucumber and mint chutney snadwiches, lots of chutneys, homemade yogurt cheeses and more.
None of the recipes are very hot although they can easily be hotted up. Although the dishes are naturally healthy - depending as they do on yogurt and vegetables and spices - Batra does not intend this as a diet book and nutritional information is not included.

A Must Have!.......2001-11-23
If you like to cook Indian food, whether you're a vegetarian or not, this book is an absolute must have. Everything I have cooked from this book has turned out wonderful and my Indian friends are astounded by my authentic cooking. I owe it all to this book. The recipes are easy to follow and I have had no problem finding any of the ingredients at my local Indian grocer and supermarket. This book is simply marvelous!
