A Vote For Murder: Murder, She Wrote.......2005-09-08
Always enjoy this series of books...look forward to the next one.
Crooked Politicians and Crime in the Streets.......2005-08-05
Pat Nebel, the wife of Maine's junior senator Warren Nebel is a literacy enthusiast and has, with the help of her husband, set up a literacy drive in conjunction with the Library of Congress. Jessica is invited to participate and heads off to Washington for a week of bookish activities. She is especially pleased that her trip coincides with a conference in DC that has brought her friend Inspector George Sutherland of Scotland Yard to town. She isn't able to get George an invitation for the reception at the White House but she does wrangle him a place at the dinner hosted by Senator and Mrs. Nebel on the program's opening night. They discover that the senator has a glamorous mansion when they arrive at his home, a mansion that over looks the Potomac and has a set of rickety steps leading down to a dock on the river. The philandering Senator Nebel is living mighty high on the hog it seems.
After dinner, George and Jessica decide to take a stroll down to the river and there they find the lifeless body of Nebel's chief of staff Nikki Farlow. Once it is determined that Farlow was indeed murdered, the local police detective begins to look to Jessica for help as he tries to figure out who committed the crime. It doesn't take detective Moody long to figure out that having Jessica Fletcher on the trail is like having money in the bank. As Jessica sorts through the possible motives, she finds that there are several that had or imagined that they had a good reason to want Farlow dead. Then of course there are the spin-doctors, the lawyers, and the other politicians that get involved in the case, which not only complicates things; it frustrates Jessica to no end. To make matters even more complicated; the senator himself has been getting death threats in regard to an upcoming vote dealing with the location of a nuclear power plant near Cabot Cove.
In this book, unlike some of the others in this series, the reader has all of the clues necessary to figure out who did it before Jessica announces her verdict. It isn't easy though, and you will have to pay very close attention if you want to catch the killer before Jessica does.
As a side plot to the main murder story this book focuses on the rivalry between inspector Sutherland and Dr. Seth for Jessica's attention. Sutherland seems to be in the lead as this book ends but I'm pulling for Seth all the way. The tweed wearing, pipe smoking Scottish detective just comes across as phony to me for some reason. That's the beauty of these books, one gets so drawn into the story that you feel as if you know these people and you get all protective. That my friends is a sign of good writing and this book is most assuredly well written. It is definitely one of the better entries in the series.
Jessica finds a body in DC.......2004-10-11
Jessica has come to Washington, D.C. to participate in a weeklong literacy drive. An added benefit is that she will get to spend time with Scotland Yard inspector George Sutherland, who is in town for a conference.
At an extravagant party at the Virginia home of Maine's junior senator Warren Nebel, she and George descend some dark, rickety stairs to the dock and find the body of his chief of staff Nikki Farlow. At first the police think it was an accident; that she tumbled down the stairs. Neither Jessica nor George buy that. With further investigation, the police determine that it was murder.
Detective Moody from the Fairfax County Police Department realizes what a resource he has in Jessica. He asks her for her help. She enlists George to assist as well, not always to the pleasure of Detective Moody.
Senator Nebel's wife, Pat, who is Jessica's friend, has been ill. He requests that Jessica spend some time with her during the week. With all the investigation, spending time with Pat and spending time with George, she doesn't get to participate much in the literacy drive she came to town for.
There are many rumors that Senator Nebel and Nikki had had an affair. His wife Pat even believes this. Could he have killed her? If so, why now?
As she begins to delve deeper into Nikki's death, she become privy to some information that was not released. Could this prove that the Senator had nothing to do with her murder?
I always enjoy books in this series. Since I've watched it on t.v. for so many years, I can see Jessica and the other main characters doing the activities I read about. It is a great cozy series and is always an easy read. This book being set in the D.C. area made it even more enjoyable for me, since I live in the area. I highly recommend this book.
fast-paced amateur sleuth .......2004-10-06
Jessica Fletcher of Cabot Cove, Maine is invited by her state's junior senator Warren Nebel to attend a literary function sponsored by his wife Pat. Jessica accepts so that she can show support to Congress' Literacy Program and because her friend Scotland Yard Inspector George Sutherland will be there too.
During Jessica's first night in DC, she and George are invited to the senator's mansion for dinner. As they are leaving, they find the body of Nebel's Chief of Staff Nikki Farlow. The police act like an accident occurred until the coroner's office reported the victim died by a blow to her head. Rumors sweep Washington that Nikki and Nebel were lovers and even his spouse thinks he killed his paramour because she was blackmailing him. Jessica believes that there is more to this homicide than the obvious simple solution; with George's help, she begins her unique brand of inquiry.
Jessica Fletcher novels are always fun to read and her latest caper, MURDER SHE WROTE: A VOTE FOR MURDER is no exception. The mystery writer cum sleuth wins the respect of the lead detective on the case with her keen observations and astute conclusions that enable her to put the pieces of the puzzle together. Fans of the long running series will appreciate this fast-paced amateur sleuth tale starring a wonderful heroine.

Customer Reviews:
great.......1999-04-08
it's written in a first-person viewpoint, and it's a bit confusing at first, but if you follow what they're doing, everything turns out fine. that, paired with the amazing price I got it for (one cent) makes it awesome
if u see this title, run away.......1998-12-24
This guide blows. Those three words pretty much sum up the whole thing. Basically it shows u the maps for all the scenarios, and gives a detailed description of all the units.(fun to look at in your spare time, but not worth 20 bucks!) For the most part, the cheat codes are the only good thing. But if u need those codes to play the game, then u should take up another hobby.
Okay........1998-06-06
The book is not helpful. It's written like you are a character in the game. The only good thing it has is the cheat codes. But you can just go to search under Warcraft Codes, and get a few puds while you're at it.
This book is simply a re written instruction manual........1998-04-16
This book is satisfacory, but not that great. Most of the book is simply a reprint of the instruction manual with more statisitics- it gives very little information on how, when, or why to use the units and buildings. Also, the mission walkthroughs are written like a story, so they are difficult to use and basically just describe one successful mission attempt. It says nothing of how the enemy will probably build- it just writes as though the enemy will do the same things everys time. It includes mission maps, but these are but the default settings and the infinite variations make them worthless. It also includes the cheat codes, but these can easily be found elsewhere, including on the CD in the 'Readme' file.

I don't Know What them Adult's were thinking up there but I'd have to say this is one of the best gaming strategy books I've read

Customer Reviews:
True to the lore, right to the point.......2007-10-02
Tides of darkness,
Takes off right after the book 'Rise of the horde' by christie golden. It is about the events that take place when the horde first attacked azeroth, the book is not written in any complicated language so if you find yourself a critical reader you will have to remind yourself this is no 'Davinchi Code'.
The book is well written considering the author seems to have aimed the book at an audience of about 14 and up. I enjoyed this book as it was just a nice well written piece focusing on warcraft, its lore and really bringing the hordes invasion to life.
Great book, Great read look foward to more
regards
Jack
Very disappointing.......2007-10-01
I picked up this book with great hopes. For those who are a fan of the online game, or the rpg game, or the card game (yes there are so many!), you should realize that there is a funny, adult sense of humor that pervades everything.
With this novel, I was left with the impression that it was written for 5th-6th graders. There were many opportunities to flesh out the characters that went unrealized, but more importantly, it seemed that the author had a list of things he needed to include in the book and he checked them off one by one.
It felt that the author was relating the "lore" of warcraft not by creating it, but by instead paraphrasing other material. I realize that yea, someone else is in charge of the property, and all that, but this book does not stand on its own and you can really see where it falls apart.
I think the people writing the warcraft novels need to keep in mind their target demographic is not
< 13 years of age. If it is, please put this and the next ones in the early reader section so at least your adult fans of warcraft will know what they are getting.
Aaron Rosenberg - Please read!.......2007-09-15
I have a point I want to get to, but let me begin by saying that this is an exciting and very well written novel. To be honest, I couldn't put it down. I recommend it not only to the WoW faithful, but also to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy read.
As you see from the title of this review, I'm hoping that Aaron Rosenberg, the book's author, reads this review. Forgive me for addressing him directly.
Mr. Rosenberg - it is clear from this book that you have within you the ability to write a substantial, fully developed, fantasy novel or series. But as I look over the titles you've written, I see that you've mostly confined yourself to books based on role-playing or computer games. I also see that you've written several books for kids. Money in the bank!
Have you considered writing for a more adult audience? Something based on a world or universe of your own creation? With full character development and deeper plot lines? I think such a work from you would be an outstanding read. And I have little doubt that it would be a bestseller among the intended audience.
Back to the book at hand. A worthy read. But, Mr. Rosenberg, you know you can do better.
Customer Reviews:
Tripe!.......2003-11-22
A cheeseball, badly written, absurdist play in twinkery, this supplement is an insult to gaming in general. Avoid at all costs.
Run "Deep Rising" in the World of Darkness.......2001-08-21
When I first saw this book on the shelf of my usual retailer (at that time), I wondered what it could be. I wasn't sure to buy it, but I took a chance, and did so. From the beginning on, it felt really interesting. Who hasn't ever heard stories of ghost-ships? Then, as a Werewolf storyteller, I wondered about the Rokea (at that time their book wasn't out yet). The book grew more and more interesting, and even when I'd never before run chronicles "on the sea", I did so from then on. The book also features the incredible Gangrel Aquarii or Mariners, which are a really interesting bloodline of the Gangrel clan. So, if you liked "Deep Rising", "Jaws", "Moby Dick", and others... you'll probably like to tell your own stories on the furious seas of the World of Darkness.
GREAT BUY!!!.......1999-07-26
It's a great book for all those changelings out there. It contains that secrets of the two NEW aquatic Merfolk, yes Merfolk Kiths. From the dark and sinister Thallain, Merrow to the glorious (and a bit conceited) Merfolk. 3 New Arts, 5 introductory treasures, and a bunch on the new brithrights and abilities. Although, the rules are a bit scratchy, but great buy.
And for all those other living in the WoD new information on how wraiths survive in the oceans and the great wars and relic ships and arts of the sea. Aquatic Gangrel and Lasombra. The dark secrets of the Technocracy and Pentex in the deep sea. And the evil activites of the Wyrm and the "Kraken" under the sea, plus information on the children of Kraken, those infected with a powerful virus. The whole book adds new depth and dimension to the WoD.
A fine addition to any WOD library........1999-04-16
This book can add an oft-overlooked dimension to any world of darkess game or chronicle, with in-depth descriptions of everything necessary for running what I consider to be one of the most terrifying types of game.

After a wait of more than five years, Judith Tarr delivers the sixth Avaryan Rising novel, the fast-paced and well-written Tides of Darkness. The sequel to The Hall of the Mountain King, The Lady of Han-Gilen, A Fall of Princes (collected in Avaryan Rising), Arrows of the Sun, and Spear of Heaven, Tides of Darkness will please both fans and newcomers to Tarr's ambitious, popular, and critically acclaimed fantasy series.
Daros, the handsome young heir to Han-Gilen, is a drunken, womanizing, useless peacock of a prince. But he is also a powerful untrained mage--and a living Gate between worlds. When he opens his Gate and breaks the strictest laws of his world, he glimpses a living darkness that is devouring worlds--and drawing ever closer to his own. Then he is arrested by the Gate-mages.
Daros is sentenced to serve the ex-emperor, the still-youthful mage Estarion. Joining with Estarion's beautiful granddaughter and heir, the powerful mage Merian, they search through other worlds for an explanation of the implacable darkness and a way to oppose it. Then Estarion vanishes on the far side of that malignant shadow--and Daros, seeking him, vanishes as well. --Cynthia Ward

Interweaving conflict, intrigue, sorcery and romance, Tides of Darkness is a bold and exciting tale by a modern master of fantasy.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting blend . . ........2006-12-30
This interesting novel is quite a blend. It mixes "swords and sorcery" with "romance novels."
Several of the male protagonists are "hunks," the women set their sights on them, and some hot romances ensue -- resulting in several pregnancies and births.
At the same time, the battle against the evil forces is intense and rather frightening.
As for Sword and Sorcery as a recipe, definitely the emphasis is on "sorcery." The Tides of Darkness are launched by powerful and almost diabolically evil mages, with only two powerful mages to stop them -- one, an ancient who has lived for perhaps thousands of years, and the other, a likeable young person with a phenomenal natural gift for sorcery.
One small aspect of the book I so much liked, the cats of the city turn out to be mystical or occult cats. At any rate, once their spiritual powers are identified, they are set to guarding the city, setting rather effective wards against the influx of the evil mages.
Quite a marvelous book. I MUST read more by Judith Tarr. This is my first book by her.
Nice book.......2003-03-20
If you are an avaryan fan then this book will not disappoint. Its not perfect but the character of Daros makes this a fresh and interesting read. He adds an element of unpredictablity to the story that is a nice change from the torqed, god-bound characters that we have met since Mirain. The book has a nice paced plot, lots of high majic, decent characterization. As I said, it isn't perfect...the women in the story are pretty typical of the women that have gone before in the series but that didn't detract much from the book. If you are a Tarr fan, I don't think this book will dissappoint you.
tremendous epic fantasy.......2002-10-12
A hedonist of the worst order, Indaros Karelios seeks a good time whether he is wenching of drinking. Nothing else really matters to the member of the aristocratic house of Han-Gilen. Daros actually has talent, but chooses to hide his abilities so he could avoid having to attend Mage School. He fears that would cramp his style.
When Daros gets in deep trouble and has to appear before the current Lady of the Gates, the Golden Emperor Merian sees inside to the very soul of Daros. She concludes that the wastrel is a strong but untrained mage. She decides he will be allowed to live but he must be punished. Lady Merian exiles Daros by sending him to her grandfather to receive the training he needs to control his power. Now a student disciple of the mighty Emperor Estarion, Daros soon is alone battling against the growing darkness of demons destroying his world one land at a time. His mentor has been dispatched by the evil one to a more mundane orb called earth.
TIDES OF DARKNESS, the latest Avaryan Chronicles, is a tremendous epic fantasy that will send genre readers in search of the previous novels, all wonderful entries. The story line makes the fantastic seem authentic as if Judith Tarr has visited this magical plane in her real life. The growing terror adds to the belief that this realm exists outside of the fertile imagination of the author. Daros, Merian, and Estarion are strong characters inside a powerful plot and that leads to another terrific Tarr tale.

great nutrition based advice that is easy to read.......2007-02-19
I enjoyed this book because it was not specifically about weight loss. The focus was on nutrition and it really made me want to be healthy!
The truth hurts.......2007-02-07
I checked this book out at the library and liked it so much I puchased it. Not anything I don't already know, but to see, in actual print, all the reasons why and how you cheat on a diet is much more motivational than you would think. Ouch! The truth really hurts but it's also really helped.
Common sense, great reminders.......2006-07-11
Finally, a book about diet that isn't a diet! Instead, it's a compilation of all the information about losing weight and keeping it off through lifestyle changes. Easy to read, nicely presented, this book set me on a one-year plan to lose those last 10 pounds -- one habit at a time.
No More Fad Diets.......2006-06-27
The author explains the situational, chemical and emotional contributors to overeating or poor eating. She recommends different strategies that fit the different triggers or causes. Read this book to get the right tool for your situation. Maybe it will be a food journal, healthy munchies, calorie tracking, ways to love veggies, but it definitely won't be a fad diet.

Simplicity as an art form creates the intrigue and attraction of Healthy 1-2-3, a nutritional cookbook that utilizes only three ingredients per recipe. Award-winning chef and author Rozanne Gold continues her 1-2-3 series with this "Healthy" entry, made with the calorie-conscious cook or host in mind.
Though three ingredients quickly can be construed as a restriction, Gold cleverly maneuvers around her own concept, all the while abetting her healthy cause. If, for example, she has a recipe featuring a particular vegetable, she uses that vegetable's own broth to create the sauce for the dish. The Roasted Asparagus and Orange Salad with Asparagus "Fettuccine" uses a fresh orange vinaigrette (tossed with roasted asparagus) and a fettuccine that is not pasta, but rather actually shaved asparagus stocks.
Gold also gives nutrition lessons throughout--teaching that all foods groups have an important place in a balanced, nutritional diet. Even foods that are high in fat and calories, such as Brie cheese, contain important nutrients that the body needs, even though they've been stricken from many diet plans.
The recipe selection addresses the full range of potential users, from the average hungry guest to the most assiduous, observant vegan. For example, the beverage combination of watermelon, pineapple juice, and fresh mint for a Watermelon Splash is simple in both preparation and the expectation of the pallet, while Immune Tea, made of kombu, shiitake mushrooms, and fresh cilantro, will probably be a stretch for the average American tastes. The quality of food photography and bold colors of this book add an extra flair to the healthy recipes. --Teresa Simanton

This is my Bible for weight loss!.......2006-07-02
I've cooked almost everything in this book and it has all been over-the-top good. I especially love the walnut cake and the chicken with avacado and mango mousse. The swordfish with corn and chilie cream is also outstanding and a favorite when I entertain. I have all but one of her books and I'm going to buy that one now!
Beautiful and Inspiring, if not always pracitical.......2004-10-23
I bought this as one of the first cookbooks I ever purchased while in collge. Ambitious is one word for that!
This cookbook is beautiful and inspiring. The photos are wonderful, it has suggested meals (with their nutritional analysis). I really love how original and unusual many of these recipes are. This is not the kind of cookbook that insists you substitue applesauce for butter and other such nonsense- rather, these are recipes that are inherently healthy but delicious in everyway nonetheless.
I made a huge 11 lb ribeye roast recipe from the cookbook (cured in salt, fresh dill) and served it with the wasabi butter asaparagus for a big family Passover meal. It was a HUGE hit, and the family wants wasabi butter on everything now.
I've also made the pink grapefruit with guava syryp and candied violets (which were a trick to find), many of the little salads, and even the 'laughing milk', a strange drink made of whipped egg whites and sugar. The fish recipes are simple and among my favorites.
My only complaint about this book is that some of the recipes are the author trying so hard to force a dish out of three ingredients that the recipe becomes cumbersome and over-complicated. I like the recipes that benefit from the simplicity of using only a few ingredients, rather than seeing how many different ways you can use broccoli in one dish.
Also, unless you live in New York City and know where to find the fish market or the produce market where chefs shop, there are some ingredients that you will simply never find.
Overall, I do adore this cookbook and I drag it out time and time again when I want to make something fun and a bit exotic.
Delicious Food, but not Easy or Cheap.......2004-01-29
This is one of my favorite cookbooks. However, because there are so few ingredients, you need really good quality ones to pull these recipes off, which makes them relatively expensive. There are some cheap meals (Pasta in the style of Sardinia, one of my favorites, about $10.00 for a 3 person meal) but expect to spend between $30-$50 dollars for every entrée serving 3-4, with appetizers a little less. Nor does the number of ingredients guarantee speed or simplicity - most of theses recipes take 45 min - 3 hours. However, if you have the time and money, I have made some fantastic dishes with this book. They're so good they don't even taste healthy.
Good if you can obtain the exotic ingredients.......2002-06-08
This book would be good if I had a bigger food budget as many of the recipes call for more exotic foods and spices than I generally keep in my kitchen, or can afford to buy. Lots of good pictures to drool over though.
A Must-Have Cookbook.......2001-10-31
Overall, this is the best cookbook I've ever used. Every recipe I've made is absolutely delicious, and for non-veggie eaters like myself, it is a God send. This is because the book encourages one to try different types of vegetables cooked in different ways and with different sauces & accompaniaments. Don't be fooled though--while some of the recipes are quick and simple to make, some take quite a lot of time--all the better to savor the finished meal, however. This book has truly taught me to enjoy the entire process of cooking, from shopping for the best ingredients, preparing the meal, then enjoying it with a nice glass of wine.
