Book Description
The Applebaums, with a new arrival on the way, must find a bigger house. But in the tough L.A. real estate market, you practically have to kill to find a house. So no wonder Juliet is prepared to overlook a corpse on the grounds of her dream house. To gain the owner's favor, Juliet promises him she'll find his sister's killer.

Entertaining.......2007-03-04
The writing is great, the storyline is interesting, and these quick reads leave me anxious to read the next installation. I highly recommend the Mommy-Track Mysteries series.
Losing faith because of errors.......2004-09-03
Like another reviewer, I do love Ayelet Waldman's Mommy-Track Mystery Series, but I too was really disappointed by the errors and typos. Waldman is a Harvard graduate--surely she didn't commit those errors herself! (If so, remind me not to ever hire her as my attorney.) I've noticed a number of books lately with sloppy copy-editing, but this one was the worst I've seen. Too bad, too, because the plot and characterization reflected Waldman's usual excellent work. Maybe she let one of her children copy-edit for her this time?
Typos mar the book.......2004-08-22
The plotting, characterizations and style are all as good as they were in the first 4 books in the Mommy-Track series.
.
However, there are typos throughout the book. For example (page numbers in the hardcover edition):
"I'd staffed looking" (instead of "I'd started looking"; p. 2)
"you're husband" (p. 125)
"temperment" (p. 152)
"stiletto-healed alligator pump" (p. 181)
"miniscule" (p. 271)
.
I'm sad and a little disturbed. Did the publishers decide to save money by cutting back on proof-readers? Did they think that computer spell-checkers can replace them? Do they think that readers no longer notice typos or care about them?
.
The typos marred my appreciation of an otherwise enjoyable book.
A house to die for........2004-07-19
In "Murder Plays House," by Ayelet Waldman, lawyer and part-time sleuth Juliet Applebaum is bursting at the seams. Literally. She has gained fifty pounds during her third pregnancy and she and her husband, Peter, need a bigger house for their growing family. The problem is that a desirable house in L. A. is not easy to get unless the buyers are filthy rich, which Juliet and her husband most certainly are not.
While house hunting with her realtor friend one day, Juliet stumbles upon a dead body in the bathtub. The owner of the house, who is the victim's brother, retains Juliet to help investigate the case. Along with her partner, Al, Juliet starts digging into the life of the deceased, an out-of-work actress named Alicia Felix.
Juliet interviews Alicia's former co-workers, ex-boyfriend, and anyone else with a possible connection to the crime. At the same time, the mother-to-be is trying to cope with her out-of-control appetite and ungainly shape, while also tending to the needs of her husband and young children.
"Murder Plays House" has its moments. Juliet is witty and sassy, and Waldman's wry humor and satirical treatment of the shallow L. A. culture are right on target. The author has a go at the trendy fashions, the insane desire to be thin at all costs, and the desperation of marginally talented actors to make it in show biz.
Waldman has trouble, however, balancing her lighthearted humor with the book's tragic elements, most of which are introduced in the second half of the novel. The carefree tone of the book's opening gives way to a somewhat somber and preachy ending. Although the plots of the "Mommy-Track Mysteries" are only passable, I keep reading them because of my fondness for Waldman's irresistible and down-to-earth heroine, Juliet Applebaum.
a fun read.......2004-07-18
Heavily pregnant Juliet Applebaum needs to find a new home for a her expanding family and fast! Not only are their current digs not going to be big enough to accommodate three children and two adults, but the people who have bought the lot next to the place they're renting have started an extensive remodeling work, and husband, Peter, a horror screen play writer (who works at the night and sleeps during the day) is getting no sleep at all and his work is suffering. Finding a nice and affordable house in LA is no easy feat; fortunately Juliet has an ace up her sleeve: her good friend Kat is a real estate agent -- albeit a heavily pregnant and quite reluctant real estate agent. Morosely, Kat agrees to go house hunting with Juliet. And when Kat shows her the magnificently restored house that Kat's cousin (Farzad) and his gay lover (fashion designer, Felix) are planning to sell, Juliet immediately falls in love with the house. Unfortunately the house also comes with the dead body of the Felix's sister, Alice. Once again Juliet finds herself in the middle of another murder investigation. But this time, solving the murder ahead of the police may actually net Juliet her dream house. Now all Juliet has to do is successfully discover who murdered Alice and why, as well juggling childcare, and making sure she doesn't give birth in the middle of her investigation...
If you're looking for a mystery novel that is full of snappy dialogue and that takes a humourous look at the life of a young(ish) mother in LA, you're bound to enjoy "Murder Plays House." Juliet is an engaging and taking character, and her attempts to be the perfect mother and understanding spouse, while trying to juggle a career as a private detective and her own needs, were truly funny and entertaining to read. However, mystery-wise, things were a bit of a let down. For example the mystery subplot was not all that well developed, and actually unfolded in a rather uneven manner, at the expense of the "mommy-track" subplot. Leads and suspects pittered out very quickly, so that when Juliet finally solved the case, it felt as if luck more than deduction was key to resolving everything. Though I will admit that because of the snappy dialogue and Juliet's engaging accounting on what it was like to be an average mom amongst the LA rich, "Murder Plays House" turned out to be a lively read. Also well done was the commentary on the lengths that some will go to in order to remain as young looking and as thin as possible. So that while the mystery angle left a bit to be desired, the storyline and narrative style made "Murder Plays House" an enjoyable yet sobering read.

Twilight of the Past is the first in a science-fiction series by debut author Michael Parziale. In it he introduces the reader to the world of Aldurea, which is embroiled in an ongoing and epic battle between two major powers. The protagonist, Newl Rift, is the leader of the Guntra De who is at war with the Spero. The war has been going on long enough that new technologies have emerged, including fabulous communications and anti-missile systems.
With very little preparation Newl sets off on a quest to discover the truth about himself and the truth about the war. In a typical boy meets girl story, the second half of the book consists of Newl attempting to save his love interest from certain death at the hands of the Spero, all the while fighting off doubts about the trustworthiness of his lady love.
This book reads like a computer game. Newl sets off on random quests for no apparent reason; other than perhaps a mysterious stranger says that he should. He conveniently suffers from amnesia so there is no real explanation of his past. The narrative isn't very cohesive, the author jumps between present and past tense often in the same paragraph. The ending is left completely on a cliffhanger with only the promise of book two.
This book suffers from one of the latest trends in publishing - where an unfinished story is marketed as book one of a trilogy or series. It used to be that books were released as series' when they were simply too huge to be a single novel (i.e. Robert Jordan "The Wheel of Time", J.R.R Tolkien "The Lord of the Rings") now publishers are cutting stand-alone novels into parts and calling them trilogies. Twilight of the Past at only 224 pages is certainly not huge and it leaves the reader wondering just how many $15 episodes they are going to be forced to purchase to find out what happens next.
Fast moving adventure.......2006-04-02
Review by William Phenn for Reader Views (3/06)
Mr. Parziale is a young man that is headed for greatness. His imaginative narration of Newl Rift (main character) and his adventure thru these mystical lands, will keep you glued to your seat. His experience with Role Play Games (RPG) has led to a very fast moving adventure.
Newl Rift is a very resourceful character. He does things that even fantasy characters would have trouble keeping up with. But then, he, too, is a fantasy character. He is also a man, one who likes his women and will do what ever it takes to aid a damsel (or in this case damsels) in distress. This dual attribute of his character puts him in some precarious positions, in particular, traveling with the likes of Mishell and Amate Luminata, the two beautiful sisters and rulers of Sactraz, a neighboring country.
Newl is a fighter, a leader for his people that many look up to. His adventures are a kin to Gulliver's Travels in many ways. He travels with a mixed bag of military, royalty, and friends on his quest to bring peace to his beloved Gutra De and the world (Aldure). The forces of evil invade his inner circle and he is faced with the reality of someone's trying to kill him. The irony of the intrigue is that the assassin is an unexpected individual, one Newl would never have suspected.
"Twilight of the Past" is fast paced, very complex and detailed to the point of exasperating. Mr. Parziale, in his efforts to be thorough, gets into such detail, that he goes so far as to explain how Newl's communicator is attached to his tailbone, a detail I didn't really need to know....The book would benefit from a key for all the varied and colorful characters, which would make it easier for the reader to remember them all.
I believe that "Twilight of the Past" would make a great RPG game. I wouldn't be surprised to see it in software stores soon. "Twilight of the Past" is a continuing saga and there is more to come from Mr. Parziale. I look forward to seeing what happens next to the adventurous Newl Rift. "Twilight of the Past" is an RPG game in book form, gamers will love it.

Applies to ALL compulsions.......2007-10-10
WOW! This book has shed some light on my life like nothing else! The key is to be open enough to apply Geneen's teachings to ANY compulsive behavior - workaholism, perfectionism, unhealthy attachment to another specific individual, drugs, sex, alcohol, smoking, food, etc. Her book does not include exercises of any sort, so I just sat and reflected on each new insight, writing out my thoughts on the matter, and my past experiences, pondering new ways to address future situations. The coping mechanism of compulsive behavior is what a child with few or no coping skills, and no power, employs in order to survive; as an adult, this mechanism no longer serves. I am grateful to Geneen and forever changed for the better!
Hilarious!.......2007-09-10
This is quite possibly the most unintentionally funny thing I've ever read. Her poor boyfriend Matt deserves a book of his own to tell us what living with this neurotic mess is truly like.
Basically it is abut her relationship with her boyfriend!.......2007-08-30
This was a diary of her meeting her boyfriend and his ex girlfriend that died.It was progressing I think to their marriage? but I was just too sick of it to read anymore.I got no info on eating but plenty on HER intimacy issues. LOL!
When Food Is Love.......2007-03-11
This is a very powerful book. It is great to see some of these concepts in black and white and knowing that someone else, probably many others, has experiened them too. Geneen Roth's book is a brilliant, no holds barred look at those demons we bury down inside and work really hard to forget about.
That explains it!!.......2007-01-11
I bought this for my mom, but I'm keeping it myself because reading it once just won't be enough. I work with troubled youth and the information in this book helps explain so many of their problems...creating drama out of anything (because that's what their lives have been), using any kind of compulsion as a control tool, the concept of how unresolved childhood issues come up again in unexpected places. The author makes the book easy to read and interesting and anyone with common sense can apply her examples to your own life and situation. It's not too 'clinical' or dull. The information makes sense.

Coping with Candida Cookbook.......2002-05-21
I have been on an anti-candida diet for 5 months so far. I have purchased 4 different cookbooks on the subject and find that this book is the one I go to the most often for ideas, info and recipes. Dr. Rockwell has written a most versatile book, offering creative ideas that I can work into my own lifestyle and not just "her rules" or strict guidelines as other cookbooks do. She has menu plan suggestions, "brown bag" & snack ideas, as well as food allergy info. When you are ready to add grains back into your diet, she tells you which order to add them back in from the least to the most allergy-producing types. She also offers her newsletter at the end of the book which keeps one updated about the Candida problem. In addition to her web site she refers one to sources for special foods which are not easily found at the local grocery store. Second to her book, I would recommend Gail Burton's book, The Candida Control Cookbook. I have lost 20 lbs. since starting this diet and am feeling much better! Whatever cookbook one uses, consistency with the diet is the key to ridding your body of too much yeast!

Not the best cookbook.......2003-10-25
As someone who is new to the candida world the information provided was extremely useful. The recipes on the other hand left much to be desired. I am an avid cook and had to ammend the recipes I tried in order to make them somewhat palattable. Some like the baking, were unfixable and had to be discarded. Some of the combinations suggested are absolutely unthinkable. If you are looking for good background information on candida this is a great book. If you are looking for great recipes, try something else.
The best candida diet I have ever tried..........2002-03-14
This book is amazing. I have suffered from candida overload for 20 years (I had tried diet and alternative medicine many times) and it had developed into chronic fatigue - I was struggling to get to work each day. After reading her book, I hired a nutritionist from Ms. White's business (we converse via e-mail - ... and took the supplements recommended and carefully followed her four point plan and diet. I am, at only one month, feeling great - out of bed and on the move! All my pains are gone, my sinuses and acne are clearing up, I have lost 20 pounds, even my fungal toenails are clearing up. I still have to stay on the diet a year at least, but it is very much worth it. None of the other methods have worked as well as this. This thorough and complete program really works and I can't recommend this book and her program enough.
Not much use, really.......2001-08-11
A lot of Christian tosh interspersed with some useful information about practical steps to take to get Candida under control. The recipes are useless for people following food-combining or gluten-free diets. Overall, I wish I never bought it.

The book is definitely of little use to me.
I have a severe case of Candida, everytime I eat carbohydrates of any kind. i.e. Potatoes, whole wheat, oats, my Candida flares up.
The book is completely FULL OF WHEAT AND CARBOHYDRATE recipes. You will be surprissed!
