5 out of 5 stars Fabulous mystery with star-crossed lovers.......2006-06-21

Murder in a Mill Town by P.B. Ryan is the second fantastic book in the Gilded Age series featuring Boston governess Nell Sweeney. When a poor Irish family's daughter disappears, they turn to their employer's wife, Violet Hewitt, for help. Violet turns to Nell to investigate Bridget's disappearance and finds more than she bargained for, including a figure from her past. The reader finally gets to find out the truth of Nell's past in this book, and it's not pretty. I love the dialogue between Nell and William. It's filled with electric undercurrents and double entendres without being dirty. While Bridget's disappearance may be the main plot of the book, the true story is the growing relationship between Nell and William. Williams' opium addiction is again dealt with, and he finds himself with even more reasons to try and beat it. And just when readers are hoping that the two can be together, Ryan ingeniously throws a monkey-wrench in the works, ensuring many more books with brilliant banter and longing looks. I can't wait to read the next book!

3 out of 5 stars 'Mill Town' Okay - Not Great.......2005-01-23

This book is the second in a series by P. B. Ryan, called "A Gilded Age Mystery". The story takes place in 1868 Boston, which makes it immediately interesting. Main character, Nell Sweeney, is a governess to a rich family. When parents of a missing girl come to the mistress of the house for help in finding her, Nell takes on the task. Characters are good and well-rounded. The character of Nell strikes me as a bit far-fetched when she fights off a bad guy. She's supposed to be this gorgeous lady, and how she overpowers him is frankly not believable. The book lacks humor but is otherwise well written. The author refers back to the first book in the series a lot, but I see no advantage in having to read Number One first. Good climax at the end.

5 out of 5 stars Murder in a Mill Town.......2004-11-13

This is the second book in one of the best Historical Murder Mystery series I've read. If you like Anne Perry (who delves into some pretty nasty Victorian vices) or better yet Dianne Day (the Freemont Jones series) then you should like this series. But buy the first book too - Still Life with Murder, since the main characters unfold across the two books.

4 out of 5 stars a wonderful new series to check out.......2004-09-02

For the many fans of historical mysteries in Victorian America (esp if you're a huge Victoria Thompson fan), here's another addicting and absorbing series to check out: P. B. Ryan's Gilded Age Mysteries, featuring intrepid governess and sleuth, Nell Sweeney. I haven't read "Still Life Under Murder" yet, but based on my favourable impression of "Murder in a Mill Town," I will definitely be reading that book soon.

When mill worker, Bridget Fallon, fails to return home after a night out with her ex-felon boy friend, her mother is naturally frantic. By now Bridget has been missing for three days, and Mrs. Fallon cannot get anyone to take her fears seriously. Everyone, from the police to Harry Hewitt (the second son of that fabulously rich and upper-class family) who runs the mill, assumes that Bridget has run off with her beau, Virgil Hines. But Mrs. Fallon is sure that her daughter wouldn't do anything like that, and is afraid for Bridget's safety. Undeterred, Mrs. Fallon turns to Mrs. Hewitt (Harry's mother) in order to ask for her help. Being kind hearted and moved by Mrs. Fallon's obvious distress, Mrs. Hewitt in turns asks Nell Sweeney (her granddaughter's governess) to look into the matter. A child of the streets, Nell has raised herself to her current position through sheer hard work and determination. If anyone can help the Fallons, it's Nell. And because Nell has a great affection for her employer, she agrees to do a spot of investigating. Little did Nell expect, however, that this investigation would bring her face to face with a past that she had thought to be long buried -- a past, furthermore that could jeopardize the new life she has carved out for herself...

Swiftly paced and with quite a few cunning plot twists, "Murder in a Mill Town" was an enjoyable read from start to finish. At the heart of the series is the character of Nell Sweeney: an intelligent, intrepid and courageous woman who doesn't hesitate to do the right thing no matter the cost. Nell, is the main reason why this series really works and is so compelling. And by throwing in Nell's complicated and darker past into the mix, "Murder in a Mill Town" became an even more engaging and poignant read. With good historical detail and a cast of well fleshed out characters, "Murder in a Mill Town" makes for great reading.

5 out of 5 stars strong amateur sleuth.......2004-07-06

As a child she lived in the poor house until she met Duncan who took her out of there. Neither Duncan nor Nell Sweeney had enough money to live on his salary so she started picking pockets and became known as Cornelia Catpurse because she was so good at it. After Duncan was found guilty of theft and thrown in jail for thirty years wealthy Bostonian Viola Hewitt hired her to be a governess for her adopted daughter Gracie.

Viola asks Nell to find out where Bridget Fallon and her boyfriend Virgil are and because she loves her benefactor Nell agrees. Viola's son, Will, an opium and morphine addict who makes his living as a gambler helps Nell. When they find Bridget and Virgil, the pair has been dead for a few days, the victim of murder with the evidence pointing to Will's brother Harry. While trying to clear Harry, Will and Nell become captives of the perpetrator.

Nell is one of the strongest, most honorable and dearest heroines to grace the pages of an amateur sleuth novel. She doesn't let anyone stop her from doing what she believes is right even if it means putting herself in danger. She plays many roles and can fit in as the mistress of a mansion or a pick pocket, which makes it easy for all types of people to confide in her. The mystery is well constructed and the revelation of the killer will come as a shock to readers. P.B. Ryan knows how to write a tale that will grip and keep readers interest throughout the novel.

5 out of 5 stars Choose your weight. Choose ANY weight!.......2006-11-22

This diet works. That is the first and the last word.

You can eat as much as you like (of the right foods). You will never feel hungry. You can snack as much as you can bear.

Want your svelte twenty year old body back? This diet will do it.

Tired of carrying an extra fifty pounds? This diet will eliminate it without any sacrifice.

Giving up refined flour products (toast) was vital for this satisfied customer; weight loss went from 0 lbs back to -9 lbs per month. Amazing.

Requirements? A little will power. "Do or do not. There is no try." - Yoda.

"Oh no. I couldn't do that. I couldn't give up (meat, milk, cheese, oils)" is your inner dragon talking. Try these recipes. You should notice that you are eating better than ever before.

(Full disclosure. Someone here kept eating 3-4 fish portions / month; purely for the anti-stroke effect, no doubt. Honest. But only 3oz / meal; after two weeks without meat that is a real feast; a Pritiken-sized portion).

These rare feasts helped compliance otherwise enormously. Willpower and self denial alone don't work in the long term. So you CAN eat the wrong foods. Just not every day. Or week. Or month. It is NOT that you can never eat meat, cheese etc again. It IS that you can eat them once every second Thanksgiving (or calculate % non-compliance here) ); which is as often as McDougall says he eats turkey.

Sauces are far more vital than rare feasts. General Tsao, kung pao, thai chili, teriyaki, black bean and mexican hot sauces all make the food an endless everyday treat. Happily they all meet the diet's requirements for limited fat.

Can't do it? Willpower of a gnat? That's a real pity. You could start with partial adherence; get used to it; then gradually increase the compliance. % compliance is entirely up to you. Better to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all? Plus the secret is: following the diet becomes extremely easy as it becomes a daily habit. In about a year.

Now before we eat let us say grace. "Thank you Oh Lord for John and Mary McDougall's diet. Good food. Good drink. Good God. Let's eat."

        Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Very good though not the best method.......2006-08-26

Several years ago I lost a lot of weight with this diet. I enjoyed the food and felt very good, with increased energy. However, it works better for some people than others. There are a few possible deficiencies - Dr. McDougall is very strict on avoiding fats, and I found that unless I supplemented the diet with ground flaxseed every day (for extra Omega 3 fat) I began to develop skin problems. Also, it is a starch-based diet, and for many people, even healthy starches can impair weight loss and lead to food cravings and overeating.

Dr. McDougall is also excessively concerned about the consumption of even vegetable protein (which from all I can learn is not harmful like animal protein), so he encourages eating sometimes relatively nutrient-deficient foods like potatoes and limits more nutritious but protein-heavy beans, as well as limiting fruit for fear of causing high triglycerides. (The high triglycerides actually often are encouraged by excessive starch intake.) He also seems a little too comfortable with the use of overly processed foods like pasta (though not on the Maximum Weight Loss diet) and salty/sugary condiments, which can reduce weight loss for some people.

Much as I admire Dr. McDougall for his ground-breaking research and lifelong devotion to helping people regain their health, I do think that the very best weight loss book available today, based on extensive, thoroughly up-to-date research as well as years of clinical practice, is Dr. Fuhrman's "Eat To Live." This is the closest anybody's ever come to a diet tailored to the exact needs of the human body, both for maximum weight loss and maximum good health. I can feel the difference in my vitality and energy when I'm on Dr. Fuhrman's program, which is based on the most nutrient-dense foods available - green vegetables, along with fruits, beans, and a little nuts and seeds. Healthy starches, although still good foods, come a poor fifth in the nutrient ratings and are limited on this program, particularly for weight loss. After a while, you find that truly nutritious food is much, much more satisfying than anything else. I was really shocked to discover that eating enough romaine lettuce completely eliminated my bad food cravings!

Both weight loss and health benefits on Dr. Fuhrman's diet are if anything even more spectacular than on Dr. McDougall's, and in the long term I think Dr. Fuhrman's diet will result in the best level of health. I find it also more varied, more pleasant, and more flexible.

Dr. McDougall's program is a huge advance over most diets, and all his books are educational and well worth reading. However, for the most sophisticated yet simple information on how to reach your highest possible level of health and lose weight the most easily, you should also check out Dr. Fuhrman.

1 out of 5 stars Too Austere .......2006-07-23

I'm happy so many have succeeded at this plan. It sounded really good to me, but after following it for about two weeks, I didn't lose any weight and was very susceptible to refined carbs. Oh and I've been VERY bloated from all the high-residue foods.

Now, I've been vegan for some time so that was no problem. But to give up all breads & pastas was too much. Not to mention any nuts or nut butters. Or soy milk & tofu.

Ugh. I like T. Colin Campbell's ("The China Study") approach (though I didn't lose any weight either) of whole foods & plant-based.

McDougall's diet, while sounding great, is too austere for me. I'd much rather have fewer calories and include whole-grain breads, nuts, etc. Much more satisfying.

I did like the section on sleep-deprivation though and have noticed the depressing effect of normal sleep time. That alone was worth reading most of the book. But I wouldn't pay full price for it (I bought mine used).

5 out of 5 stars Game Set Match!.......2005-11-28

I've tried them all. Arkins got some weight off fast and made me sick in the process. I LOVE food and LOTS of it and this was the one program that let me have it. 97 1/2 pounds lost while eating 75-80% carbs (good ones, of course) This really works!

5 out of 5 stars It works, of course........2005-10-02

Not that a fair amount of other diets have not pointed out the same thing, but Dr. McDougall makes a great effort to stress how the rich Western diet has become so standard that we are all convinced that eating gobs of meat, fats, and junk food are normal. Bear in mind that the McDougall plan has been around for many years...and although it's never been a huge fad like Atkins, McDougall has stayed around and still remains mostly relevant. Alot of people will find his plan too restrictive - vegan in essence (but not by creed...he doesn't care one way or another about the ethics of eating animals, just the physical result), it takes a LOT of preparation and getting used to. A friend and I tried this plan around 5 years ago, and the first two weeks were a bit of a struggle - you realize how used to salty, sweet, buttery, creamy foods we all are, and his recipes seem bland and hard to take (and I agree with what a previous reviewer wrote, that the recipes are a little too on the Tex-Mex side). Then you get used to the concept of eating "pure food"...and the benefits start to kick in. My friend and I did start losing weight, seemingly without trying - we were packing our faces with McDougall approved food and definitely not starving - but the other benefit was that I had more energy, and was more likely to wake up earlier and be more alert and cheerful and ready to start my day right away.

After 2 months or so, my friend and I went out for dinner and broke the diet. The next morning we both had the worst hangover we'd had in a while - from food. I felt sluggish and letharic and greasy. And, eager to get back to eating vegan.

McDougall says himself that meats, dairy, and junk food have their place. I think a lot of people miss his point when reading his opinion on eliminating these foods from your daily diet. At one time, rich foods were "feast foods" that were prepared on special occasions - turkey for thanksgiving, ham on easter, cake and ice cream on a birthday. Today it is easter for breakfast, thanksgiving for lunch, and every day is a birthday. The point is not that you have to swear off these foods for the rest of your life - eat them on special occasions, sure, but not every day. The point is, to recognize that it is much, much healthier to build your daily diet around vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. McDougall was saying this way before the Food Pyramid was even changed (twice - once to give grains and vegetables the top spot, then again to emphasize vegetables even more and also bring attention to the fact that there are other foods in the protein group besides meat).

He brings up a few interesting points that, although I'm not sure of the facts to back up his statements, definitely make an impression. One, is that Americans overconsume protein, overestimate our need for it, and assume that we can only get our protein from meat. We're led to believe this by the meat industry, of course. You can just as easily meet your protein needs from beans, seeds and nuts. Vegetarians have been arguing this for years. Two, is that the milk industry pounds into our heads that (cow's) milk is essential to prevent osteoperosis. He makes the point that Americans consume more milk than any other country and we also have the highest rate of osteoperosis than any other country. A kind of of silly example he makes - Giraffes eat nothing but leaves, and you'd think an animal like that would really need healthy bones, right? The truth is that you can also get calcium from other foods, like broccoli, spinach, and tofu. Morgan Spurlock addressed the same issue (from a junk food angle) of the food industry selling us a skewed view of the foods they sell, in the documentary "Supersize Me".

McDougall also advocated "grazing", what he called eating small meals rather than 3 large ones. Now we know that this is a good practice and it it much better suited for an even blood sugar level. When McDougall first publish his plan, it was a novel idea. Much easier on your insulin production and your energy levels, much easier on your apetite.

The downside - and there is a downside - is that eating McDougall long term is difficult unless you embrace it like a religious conversion. My friend and I slowly quit after about 6 months of fairly dedicated eating, because we were sick of all the extra effort. Friends and family are either hostile, feeling the need to defend their own eating choices and poking fun at yours, or well-meaning but clueless, inviting you to dinner and insisting you try their "vegetarian" casserole they took hours to prepare just for you, gobbed with oils and cream and cheese, and are hurt if you decline. It really is tough eating out, whether at restaurants or other people's houses - even ordering a salad is a hassle, since everything but garden salads have got meat or cheese stuck in them...and unless you order plain vinegar as a dressing, you're out of luck. I think McDougall recommends either using a lemon wedge for dressing - I never heard of a real person that would consider lemon a dressing - or carrying around your own dressing mix. Imagine going to dinner with friends and whipping dressing out of your purse - and what do men do without a purse to whip their dressing from, anyway? And it seems like all your spare time is given over to cooking, cooking, cooking...and you'll develop bigger muscles by carrying around all the food you'll need to eat throughout the day. Since it's so fresh and healthy, the whole foods he recommends are digested much easier and quicker and before you know it, you're hungry again. I found myself eating 6 minimeals throughout the day, from breakfast to pre-dinner, and believe me when I say I lugged a big grocery bag full of food back and forth to work every day. And you HAVE to do this, because it's not like you can go out for lunch and order something quick from the local deli. You might also wind up feeling alienated from friends and family because your new lifestyle is so different than theirs, and your needs have become so specialized that asking them to accomodate you turns you into one of the worst picky vegetarians that perpetuate the stereotype that all vegetarians are card-carrying pains in the neck.

Another bad point is the use of salt. McDougall assumes that his readers are attempting to lose weight or regulate their blood sugar - he doesn't take into consideration people with hypertension. Salt use is encouraged - and so is the use of salty condiments in order to make his recommended foods more flavorful; barbeque sauce, soy sauce, and salt, salt, salt. Canned foods are also encouraged, also high in salt...and in a few places he encourages the use of granulated sugar. Not great for diabetics.

To sum up, this is a great book to read (along with some of his others) to get a different outlook on the food industry in America, and inspiration and enthusiam for changing your own eating habits. It is by no means the be-all, end-all of diet books, and I don't think it should be regarded as the cure for every person's problem. I do think that it deserves credit for bringing attention to the fact that a lot of the reason why we are so chronically sick these days is that we are poisoning ourselves with over-processed, nutritionally vampirized, artificially "improved" foods and lost touch with the cause and effect of our bodies' fuel needs.

TRY the diet - give it your best shot, your most open mind, your most optimistic intentions, and ignore the maintsream media and "common knowledge" that tells you "everyone needs meat" or "but are you getting enough protein?" And, continue learning about the subject through the web and other books, even after you've finished The McDougall Plan. I think the best thing I took away with me after reading this book was a newfound interest in my own nutritional needs and a realization of how important it is to know for myself what is good for me to eat - because *I* know, not because the TV tells me so.

And now, for the kitchen impaired, a cookbook guaranteed to take you from zero to frittata in less than an hour. Dad's Own Cookbook offers culinary neophytes and novice cooks the chance to finally flex a little muscle in the kitchen. For singles who don't cook but are trying to impress a new date, this could be the dating guide of the century.

Joy of Cooking, The New Basics, and Betty Crocker's New Cookbook are all excellent books, but if you think Cuisinart was a movement that followed the French impressionists, they just might be a bit over your head. Author Bob Sloan assumes nothing, and Dad's Own Cookbook covers it all, start to finish. From buying the ingredients to cooking and serving, Sloan offers concise, no-nonsense instruction that strips away intimidation and sends confidence levels soaring. The highlight of this extraordinary cookbook is the recipes. While Sloan assumes you might be inexperienced in the kitchen, he never assumes that you are inexperienced at the table. The recipes are admirable, including such delicacies as Chicken Tortellini with Prosciutto and Tomato Cream Sauce, Baked Salmon with Herb Crust, and Strawberry Mousse. Best of all, Dad's Own Cookbook provides you with the tools you need to put them on the table.

Sloan starts with shopping tips, such as how to read product labels and select fresh produce. (Quick quiz for the experienced cooks out there: how do you tell if an egg is fresh?) He moves on to how to pick knives and pans, and how to measure (under the snappy title "Real Men Do Measure"), prepare, and serve. Along the way, Sloan offers solid advice on selecting a menu, what to prepare in advance, and how to time the cooking so everything comes out just right and at the same time. About the only thing Dad's Own Cookbook leaves out are excuses--when it comes to cooking, you simply won't need them any more. --Mark O. Howerton

            Book Description

Whether itís pancakes on a Saturday morning or dinner on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday when Momís away on a business trip, today itís as important for men to know how to cook as it is for women, and to redress that all-to-typical imbalance here is DADíS OWN COOKBOOK.

As much about attitude as it is about technique, DADíS OWN takes fear out of the kitchen and replaces it with a reassuring camaraderie. Bob Sloan is a self-taught professional chef who knows how to teach the basics in jargon-free language, from how to hold a knife to why heat a pan before sauteeing to what parts of a chicken to buy. There are tips on shopping, storage, preparation, timing; primers on meat, fish, cheese, grilling, and wine; plus dozens of feature boxes.

Chicken Breast Piccata. Asparagus and Orange Vinaigrette. Baked Mackerel with Sundried Tomatoes and Herbs, Dadís Official Meatloaf, Mexican Chicken Stew, and Apple Brown Betty. Not only does DADíS OWN solve the problem of how to cook, but it deliciously solves the problem of what to cook. Selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club and Better Homes & Gardens Family Book Service. 233,000 copies in print.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for Dads!.......2007-03-21

This book is an absolute staple in our kitchen -- and it's not just for dads! My mom is a great cook but she's always taught me in terms of a "pinch of this" and a "little of that", but when I'm cooking on my own I always turn to this book first for basic kitchen how-to. It has lots of useful everyday tips, and it's an easier read than the Joy of Cooking. Our favorite recipe is the meatloaf - we always make a double serving and freeze the extra!

A sometime bachelor friend told us about this cookbook, which is his mainstay. My wife and I bought it and were very impressed - so much so that it will become a gift for some other members of our family.

It seems to have everything in one place - good recipes, basic instruction about foods, shopping, equipment and techniques - plus a breezy style and attractive graphic layout.

The title is unfortunate - it's actually a good, solid, basic cookbook that's useful for cooks of all genders. Only the haute cuisine chef will find it beneath him or her.

This is a great cookbook - it literally taught me to cook and gave me the confidence I needed to learn more on my own. Love it!

5 out of 5 stars not just for dads!.......2004-04-24

This cookbook has tons of solid cooking basics plus fun recipes that everyone (not just dads!) will find helpful. This is the first place I look for classic things like roast chicken, lasagna, and birthday cake. Great advice on how long to cook various cuts of meat and the 'simple' steps that other cookbooks often assume you already know. I got this cookbook when I went to college, and it was a great way to build a solid base to my cooking repertoir.

when i got divorced and my two sons came to live with me, it wasn't long before i realized we couldn't eat out every night. But then, i was the proverbial helpless male...i had never made rice before much less cook dinner regularly, or irregularly. this book is so helpful, so elementary, i couldn't recommend it more for someone who knows absolutely nothing about cooking food. you will not regret owning this book. my boys are now at college but i still find myself referring to it often.

5 out of 5 stars like many an amateur chef..........2007-08-26

my culinary ambition often far outpaces my knowledge and ability in the kitchen. but dad's own cookbook is always there to sort me out. whether i need a bit of help making hard boiled eggs or homemade ravioli stuffed with goose liver paté, i can think of very few cooking expeditions i've undertaken in the last few years that haven't involved at least a cursory glance at bob sloane's tremendous book.

thanks to jim harrison for recommending it to me (not personally, alas, but that is a man whose opinion i trust) and thanks to bob sloane for saving me from my own rivers of frustration in the kitchen.

if you cook and you're not a pro, buy this book.

This is the best cookbook I have come across for someone who is an amateur at cooking like myself. It lays out all the basics and detail stuff you need to know to follow each recipe, to stock you kitchen, and in terms of general advice for cooking and particular situations (eg parties). I highly recommend this book to people I know already, and I do to anyone who is looking for a great way to get started into the wide world of cooking. Cheers

I bought this book for my boyfriend and his young teen kids (well okay, really for me, because I collect cookbooks and was curious). Here is what is excellent about it: a TERRIFIC single page chart so the cooking-impaired can look in their fridge and freezer and tell what is "old and should be tossed immediately food," and easy to read recipes for basics that everyone universally likes to eat and can actually make, such as grilled cheese sandwiches, pancakes, etc. The only thing I wished for more of: photos of finished dishes, but I realize this would have increased the price of the book...and, who but cookbook collectors really need to view a finished grilled cheese sandwich anyway? More than worth the purchase if you're trying to class up a dad's kitchen in a gentle, good humored way.
