Mediocrity at it's finest; don't waste your time.......2007-02-21
Robert Cannon is the wealthy CEO of a tech company that makes top secret programs for the government. He has just discovered that one of his trusted employees is selling the programs to the highest bidder. He decides to set a trap for Mercer the culprit, and wants to catch his accomplice too. Traveling to Alabama, he is soon smitten by the alleged accomplice, Evie Shaw, a young widow and owner of the marina.
Evie has had a tragic life so far. Married at 18 to her childhood sweetheart, he is killed before the marriage can even get started (those passages are pretty sad). So in essence, we have yet another vintage Howard virginal widow who has saved herself for an overly alpha male who does not deserve her trust. When a very undeserving Robert finally wins her trust, will she be able to forgive him for his betrayal?
The character development is abysmal; the action unbelievable; the dialogue atrocious. And while Howard could have ended the story with Evie giving Robert his walking papers, instead he asks that she be at his beck and call (in bed and out). The whole story stinks. And of all the great Howard novels, this is the one that Harlequin decided to turn into a movie (which is re-worked, but stinks as much as the book).

I am a big fan of Linda Howard but I really didn't care for this one as much as the others. I liked Evie's character and felt for her. Okay, did anyone else not like Robert? I didn't care for him at all and was hoping she would give him the boot. She was better off with Matt's memory! I didn't read Duncan's bride but I really don't think it would have made me like him any more.

........................................The thing that bothered me most was - what happened to the marina that she loved so much??? So, lets get this straight, he is good in bed and very aggressive, so he got to put her through hell, she lost her HOME and left her business that meant everything to her? I would have liked it better if he moved down there to be with her. Oh well, can't like them all I guess.

Once upon a time, Evangeline Shaw was like any regular teenager: fun loving, giggling and mischievous. At the age of eighteen, she married her childhood sweetheart. LOVING EVANGELINE is a sequel to DUNCAN'S BRIDE. After meeting Robert in the first book, I was glad to find that he had his story and was happy to see him end up with Evie, who incidentally is quite like his sister, Madelyn. Evie is a no-nonsense woman who both challenged and intrigued our hero. While they may come from different worlds, they share a characteristic that keeps pulling them together: that mutual goal to unlock the key to the other's emotion and break the wall that guards their heart.
While this doesn't rate as highly as the others, this was still an enjoyable book. There are humorous parts and then there are the sad ones. I cried reading about how Evie's husband died. That part was very emotional that one can't help but wish that things would turn out right for her and Robert. And I loved how someone like Robert was brought down on his knees. I liked the epilogue and the way things have turned out for them. Lastly, I loved catching up with Reese and Madelyn and their two boys, whom Madelyn lovingly calls the "imps of Satan".
Although I thought that DUNCAN'S BRIDE was better, this was a nice follow up story.
Mediocre Story.......2006-02-27
LOVING EVANGELINE is one of Linda Howard's early books and it falls short of the intrigue that we've seen in her recent works. It has a lot of chauvinistic romance and only a glimmer of mystery that leaves the reader wondering why that aspect is even in the book.
Evie Shaw owns a marina in Alabama. She's a widow who has experienced so much tragedy in her young life that it makes the reader wonder what keeps her motivated to get out of bed in the morning. She seems happy to go through life getting up each morning and working at the marina with no extracurricular activities at all. That is until Robert Cannon enters the picture.
Robert is a wealthy businessman who is always in control, be it with his emotions, his employees, or anything else that touches his life. When he's told that one of his employees is selling top secret computer programs to another country, he sets out to trap the traitorous person. His trap is set for Mercer, a manager at one of his companies, and Evie Shaw.
Once Robert lays eyes on Evie, he's smitten. His elaborate plans continue but the more he gets to know Evie the more he can't believe she's involved in espionage.
Now on the romance side, Robert has his work cut out for him to woo Evie into his bed. Seems Evie has been faithful to her dead husband for twelve years and isn't too enthusiastic about a summer fling.
The series of events leading up to how Robert finally wins Evie's heart is far-fetched, his trap is a joke, and the entire finale left me shaking my head. Howard should have ended this book when the bad guys were caught in the middle of a sale, and not continued with the romantic aspect.
WARNING - SPOILER
Robert's attitude toward Evie, especially at the end of the book is a joke. His demands that she marry him and she sending him off is something out of the sixties, not in today's age. And then when he comes back to tell her he loves her and ask her again to marry him, he lists demands that would have any modern woman slapping him. "You will be there for me at my beck and call both in bed and out." Huh? What is up with a statement like that? The last few pages were so bad, that I actually put the book down and didn't finish the last ten pages for a day.

Character development is fair. Many terms and expressions are repeated until the idea is pounded into the reader's brain. The main characters are understood while the support characters are mostly left up to our imaginations. Sub-character development definitely needs work, especially where Mercer is concerned.
Plot is also fair. Howard wavered between romance and mystery genres and does not do it well. The perfect blend we saw in ALL THE QUEENS MEN or OPEN SEASON is not seen in this storyline.
Overall, LOVING EVANGELINE is an average book. I'd recommend it if there is no other Linda Howard books left to read. Otherwise, see some of my other reviews on Linda Howard books for a better choice!
Good Book. The Movie is Also Good........2005-10-02
I listend to the audiobook cassette recording for Linda Howard's book Loving Evangeline and I actually saw the movie that was based on this book before I listened to the audiobook and I liked the movie and it made me interested in the book so when I saw this audiobook in a used book store I purchased it and listened to it and I liked it. The movie definitely took liberties with the book like in the book Evie is from the South but she isn't Southern in the movie and the movie also added a brother for Robert among other things but I guess because I saw the movie first I was able to enjoy it because I wasn't comparing it to a book which I hadn't read or listened to and I like romantic love story movies. I liked this audio recoring and I think the reader was good and I enjoyed the mystery and suspense that went along with Robert and Evie's love story and my only complaint is that the audiobook was abridged and not unabridged but still I liked listening to the story and I have added the paperback edition to my list of books to read.

Don't Do It!!!.......2004-03-07
I got this audio version from the library. I do a lot of traveling and I love Linda Howard so how could I go wrong.
I listened to the tapes even though I read that they were the abridged version (I only listen to and buy unabridged editions)and I regretted it imensely.
The editing was awful. So awful that bad books were even worse (All That Glitters and Independant Wife). Loving Evangeline I thought was an okay book, but because the editor cut out so much of the story, this too becomes an awful book. Loving Evangeline is one book that I think readers should take the time to read.
If you have to get the audio version then go through your library and obtain a copy. Whatever you do, do not buy it first!!!

Night of intrigue and straight up entertainment.......2001-11-21
This was a book that I could not put down. I love this series of books. I lost a lot of sleep because i couldn't wait to get to the next chapter. The story has it all, drama, suspense, romance, & action. This was one of the better sci-fi trilogy books that I've read in a long time. I highly recommend reading this book!!!
Best book I ever read.......2001-11-18
This was a great book. It was addicting and the action and suspense was good. Its the best fantasy book by my opinion. The ending of the book is completely unpredictable, the book changes from time to time. At first your focusing on the elves and Night of Glory then near the end of the book its about 1000 years later! I strongly recomend this book if your a fan of fantasy novels, if not its still probably a good book.

Fantastic Book.......2007-09-05
This book answers every question you can think of during your pregnancy. It covers all physical expectations and surprises, as well as what to expect emotionally from the day you find out you're pregnant, to the day after delivery. It even tells you what kind of pain to expect during labor and delivery. It describes in laymen's terms what is going on inside your body and all the medical jargon and testing.
Mayo Clinic is a world-renowned hospital with wonderful doctors who collaborated on this book. And the best thing is, it's far from being preachy and paranoid. The Mayo Clinic Guide to Pregnancy is based on the truth that women have been successfully getting pregnant and having babies for THOUSANDS OF YEARS and all those strict rules and myths about what you can and can't do are not necessarily true. My interpretation is that this book encourages a healthy lifestyle without alchohol, drugs or smoking... other than that, the average pregnant woman has very few limitations.
Good book, but appears out dated...........2006-04-28
I was very excited to receive this book, and started reading it immediately. It is a large hard-cover edition, certainly making it feel as though it has all the information you'll ever need. I'm sure this book has tons of good information, but when I got to the nutrition section, I knew that the food pyramid they showed was out of date. I hadn't checked the copyright when I ordered the book and was disappointed to see that it was published in 1994! 12 years old is pretty old when it comes to any medical/health information, and so I'm returning it for the more updated "Mayo Clinic Guide to a healthy Pregnancy". I would have liked the new version to also cover the first year of life like this book, but I need up-to-date information, or I won't trust it.

This is absolutely the best resource for anyone trying to conceive, pregnant, with an infant or just curious about the entire process.
My husband and I used this exculisevly with our first child. Now that we are ready to have a second, I've tried other books (What to Expect, Girlfriend's Guide, etc) and have been dissapointed by all. This is truly the only book you need for pre-conception through your child's first birthday.
I love that this book take a serious tone and a more professional viewpoint. It doesn't joke or make fun of any part of the pregnancy process. One of my favorite parts was its breakdown of labour and delivery. I read this section many times and made notecards to take to the hospital with us.
Everytime our daughter sneezed, spit-up or had a fever we ran for this book. (hey we were first time parents!) I was living very far from my own family in a country were I didn't speak the language. This book was my bible and comfort. I never thought to look anywhere else for answers.

This is a wonderful book to have throughout your pregnancy and your child's first year. It has been a great help to me and my family. Yes, it is a thick book, but it has lots of great information.
I suggest that everyone own a copy so that's why I'd like everyone to know that you can contact your local State Farm office and they will send you one for free. You don't even have to be a customer and they don't try to get you to switch to their insurance. The phone call was less than 5 minutes which is great when you're a busy mom. No, I don't work for State Farm, I just like to get stuff for free.
Not bad.........2005-02-02
This is a big heavy book, full of lots of information. But as other posters have mentioned, it is a bit outdated. It calls Norplant and Depo "New", when it has been around for awhile now. The pictures are a little outdated. I liked Miriam Stoppards "Conception, Pregnancy and Birth" for its pictures and brief look at topics. I will use this one a reference, but some of the sections need a complete overhaul.

Great for grilling & sauces.......2006-08-22
This is a nice cookbook for those interested in Asian food. There are many recipes for marinades and sauces, as well as grilled salads, noodles and flatbreads, even Thai quesadillas. Su-Mei Yu, a native of Thailand, does a nice job of explaining methods for grilling and for proper satay. There are recipes from most countries in southeast Asia, Japan, Korea and China. The recipes appear to be rather authentic and easy to follow. There are many good pictures of the food, and she suggests multiple ways to serve particular dishes (for example, with different sauces or sides).
While this isn't my very favorite Asian cookbook, it is one I refer to often. I'm glad it's in my library. Those who love to grill and/or make Asian food will likely find it to be very useful.

My wife and I have been visiting Thai and Vietnamese restaurants for years. I have bought several other cookbooks with little success; The recipes looked good on paper but didn't measure up. I found this book easy to follow. The ingredients were easy to find and the results were great. I would recommend this book to someone who has as least cooked some Asian food.

I buy this book so that I can cook some Southeast Asian food for my Chinese in-laws. I made the Malaysian Beef Kabob, but it turned out more like Thai beef Kabob. Too much emphasis on one ingredient, i.e tumeric, that I have too modify it. I was a little dissapointed.
Mouth-watering recipes from South East Asia.......2002-08-14
This book is different from many Asian cookbooks in that its primary focus is on grilling techniques as they apply to Asian foods. The result is a scrumptious wealth of recipes which are truly a delight to prepare and eat. The only reason I didn't give the review 5 stars is that I found that many of the recipes were a little more time-consuming than I prefer, taking 45 minutes minimum to prepare. However, the result is food that is truly authentic Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Laotian, and so on. This book really delivers on the flavors of South East Asia. Most recipes call for ingredients which can be found in any grocery store, but there will be times you'll have to make a trip to your neighborhood Asian mart to discover the delight of cooking with real banana leaves, palm sugar or some of the more unusual ingredients. I would say that if you love cooking, especially on the grill, and enjoy flavorful food, you'll really get a lot out of this book.
