Excellent !!!.......2006-04-12
This review is for all of Wendy Corsi Staub's books. The first book I read by this author was Lullaby and Goodnight, which was maybe a year ago. I loved it so much that I went and bought all of her books and read them all in a month. I just finished her newest one "The Final Victim" and even though it is a long book (474 pages) once I was done with it I was left wanting more. I know she is working on her next novel, but I just wish that she would write faster:) Anyways go, buy and read any of her mystery (except Dearly Beloved). I guarantee you will fall in love with her style and you'll be left wanting more. Just for a reference, I like mystery books where cops and detectives are not involved a lot. My favorite authors are, of course, Wendy Corsi Staub; Mary Higgins Clark, Patricia MacDonald, Carlene Thomson and Sidney Sheldon. Good luck.
Great book!.......2005-09-04
Another great book by Wendy Corsi Staub - kept me wondering 'til the end!
Okay Book, Inspite of Obvious Mistakes.......2005-07-18
Kiss Her Goodbye was okay. I didn't find out who the killer was until the end, but some of the mistakes confused me. Maybe they were typos. For instance, first the young boy from Jen's high school was supposed to have been shot and killed, then, later in the book you read that he was found stabbed to death. There were numerous other mistakes. I noticed that everyone is comparing Wendy Corsi Staub to Mary Higgins Clark. Mary Higgins Clark still reigns as the Queen of Suspense as far as I'm concerned. The only other writer that I would compare to MHC is Patricia MacDonald, and even she is not ready to take MHC's throne.
Loved it!!.......2005-04-18
My cousin, and best friend, read this book last summer. She finished it in a week then lended it to me. She assured me I'd like it and sure enough she was right. Although the beginning was a little boring, I'd still give it 5 stars. Staub keeps the reader at the edge of their seat and making sure the doors and windows are locked. When you find out who the killer is, you'll think "Why didn't I think of them!?"
Great read. Pick this one up today.
Staub is becoming one of my favorites!.......2005-03-05
Staub does it again by creating a thrilling, heart-pounding page turner. This book had me captivated from the first page till the very end. A very well written plot and developed characters, Staub has a unique way of grabbing your attention and holding it till the last page is turned. I have enjoyed all her books and have yet been disappointed in any of them. I just purchased All the Way Home and I am looking forward to reading it and staying up all night to do so. It is really hard to put her books down. Way to go, again, Staub!

(3.5) "Tenderness. You get it where you can. Even if you have to pay for it.".......2007-08-09
Given the protagonist's sorry state of affairs, Joe's last name, Hope, boggles the mind, the man embroiled in a grim predicament, accused of a brutal murder soon after the suicide of his nineteen-year-old daughter, Gemma. An Edinburgh man, Joe is no slacker, a tough guy who makes his living as an enforcer in the criminal underbelly of the city, his companion, Cooper, partial to violence when making a point. Hard-living and hard-drinking, Joe frequently accompanies his mate when it is necessary to convince an errant customer to pay his debts. Long-immersed in a lifestyle that favors as little contact with the law as possible, Joe's world is rough, dangerous and frequently violent, a baseball bat his tool of the trade. Indeed, it is the baseball bat that indicts Joe in the murder of his wife, Ruth, baseball not being a big sport in Edinburgh.
In a drunken haze after learning of Gemma's suicide, Joe barely has time to react to the news when he is summarily arrested for the brutal bludgeoning his wife. Granted husband and wife have been picking the marriage apart for years, no love lost between them anymore, but Joe can't recall a row serious enough for him to have reacted that violently. Instead, he has been focused on what happened to Gemma, traveling to Orkney to see Ruth's cousin, Adam Wright, who runs a writer's retreat where Gemma was staying when she ended her short existence on the earth. Trussed up by the so-called evidence that marks him as a murderer, it takes Joe a while, due to his hard-headed nature, to even begin to figure out who could be framing him and why. His alibi for the night of the murder is shot, the deadly baseball bat belongs to him and there is no one to support his own description of the facts.
Guthrie fashions his tough-guy-hit-by-tragedy tale from the criminal element in Edinburgh, perfectly capturing the downtrodden losers, the soulless, directionless lives of men who have little to celebrate save the occasional rousing drunk and whatever random violence attends the moment. As unsavory as most of his fellow travelers, Joe's world is filled with the harsh realities of people scrambling for an edge, as assortment of bullies and miscreants; but underneath his bravado, Joe has a heart, although he expends a great deal of energy avoiding his feelings. Inevitably, those feelings translate into action, the currency of his trade. In the end, it's no wonder that bullets fly, bats swing wildly and damaged bodies scramble for cover. Imbuing this underground life with menace, Guthrie recreates the dark side of Edinburgh, bristling with con artists, gangsters and opportunists acting out their personal dramas on the seedy streets, where every action has a consequence and the powerless bow to threat. Redeemed, Joe resurfaces, reeling from a betrayal even he didn't see coming, the world just as bleak as before. Luan Gaines/2007.
3 - 3 and 1/2 stars.......2006-05-30
If you can get thru the first half-dozen chapters (or so) of the author calling every other character and/or street character the same name (starts with T, has a W, and ends with T) then you'll be pleasantly surprised with the double murder mystery that develops over the course of the rest of KISS HER GOODBYE, a double-dose of tough love for the main character, a small-town Scottish mob enforcer ironically named Joe Hope.
The lowdown: after spending a night away from his estranged wife, Hope is given the news that his daughter has committed suicide. He believes Adam -- her cousin -- failed to watch out for the young girl, but before Hope can arrange a formal sitdown with the man he's caught by the police and charged with the murder of his own wife! Hope must stay one step ahead of his lawyer, his (somewhat) love interest, and the police if he's going to save his skin and hold those responsible for these two crimes.
Allan Guthrie holds up his reputation for noir thrillers here, delivering a wealth of characters the average reader probably will hold suspect until the very last few pages, but there's little more to get excited about. The mystery unfolds rather predictably, but KISS HER GOODBYE is a quick, guilty-pleasure-read like much of the HARD CASE imprint. It's one of the stronger early entries in the line, and, on those merits alone, it deserves to be read.
The generic title gives you an idea of what to expect........2006-03-14
I had read several glowing book reviews of "Kiss Her Goodbye" on different websites so I purchased this book. Mr. Guthrie is apparently a young, up-and-coming crime writer, but his sophomore effort is a wheezing slog through a bare bones plot that is not only stretched thin to reach the scant 220 pages, but the whole book felt like a re-run of other, better British crime stories.
The book unwisely follows a sad-sack knucklehead anti-hero, with zero redeeming qualities who bungles his way deeper and deeper into a mystery that completely baffles him, although it won't baffle the reader. Mr. Guthrie could have supplied at least one additional suspect just to, you know, keep us guessing past page 30.
The premise seems intriguing as a collections man armed with a baseball bat (in Edinburgh?) finds out his daughter "killed herself." I was expecting a "Get Carter" style trail of bodies as dark secrets get dredged up and punters get wasted for getting in the way. But no. Our anti-hero "Tough Guy" spends the bulk of the book whinging about his bruised ribs. We also meet such unlikely characters as an effeminate tanning salon worker (in Edinburgh!) a hooker with a slightly tarnished heart of gold, a sadistic cop and a wishy-washy writer living in a retreat on an island. The plot is padded out with a shy love story between the writer and his maid which makes the timidity of "Howard's End" seem downright courageous. Each chapter that features the ill-starred lovers pining for each other, yet neither akes the first move, the already sluggish plot stopped dead in it's tracks.
"Kiss Her Goodbye" uses gruesome violence merely for titillation, and throws a whiff of incest in just for shock value. Neither is germane to the plot.
So, finally I did give it two stars instead of one, and I did spend the time and effort to write an in-depth review of the book because I did see potential in both the writing and the setting. Mr. Guthrie's rookie effort "Two-Way Split" has garnered him some acclaim and notoriety, so it's clear he has talent. I just felt this story was uninspired, just like the title.
For Brit Noir that Mr. Guthrie clearly is indebted to, spend the time and effort to seek out "Get Carter" by Ted Lewis and "The Devil's Home on Leave" by Derek Raymond. Both are quite intense, tough and gritty. They both show how to write an unlikeable bastard hero correctly.
Harsh and nasty, but not much mystery.......2006-02-13
Joe Hope is an enforcer for a loan shark in Edinburgh Scotland who finds out his daughter Gemma has committed suicide on the isle of Orkney. His immediate concern is to take out his anger on his wife's cousin who was supposed to be looking out for Gemma. But first he gets drunk and spends the night sleeping it off at his friend and employer's home. The next day he takes off for Orkney where he is promptly arrested for the murder of his wife. Turns out her body was found in the boot of his car, beaten to death with Joe's baseball bat. Joe's lawyer eventualy gets him released and he goes about unravelling the mystery of who is framing him for the murder and why his daughter killed herself.
This isn't a badly written book although it is unabashedly violent and the language is beyond salty. It isn't however that much of a mystery. You will figure out who is behind the murder fairly quickly. Then Joe himself reveals it with still about 80 or 90 pages to go. It is also hard to root for the main character of Joe Hope because there is nothing likable about him. There really isn't anything likable about any of the characters and their attitudes become overbearing after awhile. The thing that struck me the oddest is that for as hard and nasty of a story as "Kiss her Goodbye" was, the ending wraps everything up like a package with a big bow. It just didn't seem to fit the style of the book.
Like a bite from a dog with no teeth.......2005-10-23
You know you're supposed to feel something at some point but nothing really breaks the skin. The charecters are soulless and pretty boring even when compared solely to the other books in the series. The plot is by the numbers and predictable at every turn.
When one reads a mystery novel you want to have to pay attention for every clue, every charecter shading, and yet hope to be surprised at the end despite your efforts. No such energy need be expended with this novel. You'd have to be reading the book in a different language to be surprised by anything that happens here. The set-ups are childish and can be seen a mile away.
If you have to buy this to complete your set of Hard Case Crime, be my guest. I did. Everyone else, take a few steps back and try "Fade to Blonde" or "Marked Woman".
Book Description
“Kiss Her Goodbye is a smashing good read. It moves at such a breakneck pace that you'll scarcely have time to take a breath.”
—Tess Gerritsen, New York Times bestselling author of The Mephisto Club
In a gripping thriller that matches one cop’s love for his only daughter against the diabolical cunning of a charismatic madman, debut novelist Robert Gregory Browne announces his presence in territory long ruled by the likes of Dean Koontz and John Sandford
ATF Agent Jack Donovan has two ambitions: take down cult leader Alex Gunderson after years of violent mayhem, and reconnect with his daughter Jessie, who has somehow managed to slip from his life. But, none of Jack's experience as a stellar cop or an absent father has prepared him for the unthinkable way these two parts of his life are about to collide.
In a desperate act of revenge, Gunderson kidnaps Jessie and buries her alive. But just as Jack’s team is closing in, fate intervenes in the form of a bullet and the secret to Jessie’s location is lost. With only a few precious hours of oxygen to sustain her, and with not a single clue pointing in her direction, Jessie is sure to die—unless Jack can somehow find her. Jack would trade anything in the world for just one shot to save his little girl—even his own life.
Customer Reviews:
Can see why horror fans love it, but not for me.......2007-06-12
First Sentence: It all started with the pregnant girl went crazy.
ATF Agent Jack Donovan is determined to capture violent bank robber Alex Gunderson. During a car chase, Gunderson's pregnant wife is shot, loses the baby and is in a coma. In revenge, Alex kidnaps Jack's daughter and buries her alive with only a limited amount of oxygen. Gunderson is killed without revealing where Jack's daughter is buried and Jack is involved in an accident resulting in an out-of-body experience with unusual residual effect.
I really liked the first part of this book and didn't like the second. The first part is a non-stop, fast action police procedural of hunting down the bad guys. Then we get to Jack's accident and its aftermath. The story then took on more an element of horror than strictly paranormal, which I love, and the end was one I really disliked both for it ambiguity and it's feeling of being a trick. The characters were interesting but flat and lacked development. The book didn't quite work for me but I can see why fans of paranormal horror enjoy it.
Kiss Your Sleep Goodbye.......2007-04-18
Is there anything better than picking up a debut author and finding the kind of storyteller you wish had been writing books for years already? A little frustrating, perhaps, as you chomp at the bit for the author's follow up, hoping that you can add yet another name to your Automatic Read list.
Robert Gregory Browne's Kiss Her Goodbye is one such debut.
I picked up this book and settled into bed to read a couple chapters before drifting off to sleep. Sleep, however, would have to wait. You hear that kind of praise bandied about a lot in regards to novels--the keep-you-up-all-night variety. For me at least, this doesn't actually happen very often. I like sleep. I take it whenever I can get it. But Part One of Kiss Her Goodbye will deify you to put the book down before you finish. An intense sequence that refuses to ease the tension for a second drags you down like a wild current, and before you know it you are blissfully drowned in the narrative.
I live for books that grip me so tightly all I can think about is getting back to the story as soon as possible. I finish these kinds of novels quickly, making me feel like a fast reader when I typically am not.
There's no doubt Browne is a natural born storyteller who keeps his prose so clean and sharp, it's worth losing sleep over. I can't wait to get my hands on his next book and kiss another night's sleep goodbye.
A new favorite!.......2007-03-22
I love finding a new author on their first book and really getting into the characters. Read it cover to cover in two days because it moves so fast. Killer book!
Couldn't put it down!.......2007-03-22
Kiss Her Goodbye pulls you in and doesn't let go. The pacing is tight, the story compelling, and the characters unforgettable. I loved this story and can't wait for more from Mr. Browne.
Great Read!.......2007-03-21
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It grabbed me from the start and didn't let go until the end, and had a whole bunch of twists and turns in the middle. I also thought Browne did a good job with his characters, from a bad guy who made me cringe to some laugh out loud secondary characters. Overall, a great debut novel.

Customer Reviews:
Great insight for yourself or someone you love.......2007-05-24
I ordered this book to see if I found that the descriptions here suited me better than bipolar disorder. The stories could be my own life read back to me. I was happy to find the insights that this book provides for those of us who struggle with BPD and those of us who are dealing with someone with BPD. Great book. Highly recommended
my thoughts in brief.......2007-03-22
I've done plenty of DPB reading, and this is useful in some ways. It is pretty comprehensive. This book tries to offer information to soothe the borderline and those in contact with him/her. As a borderline, I felt even guiltier than usual reading about the negative effects of my illness on my loved ones, which was unnesessary. Not good. On the other hand, it is one of the few BPD books I've found on the subject that briefly outlines other, often concurrent, illnesses, which was helpful. If you're a dedicated student of the illness and feel the need to read everything available on the topic, read the whole thing. If you've done your research already, you'll find it somewhat redundant. If you're new to it, you can get everything you need without the clinically technical chapters.
Right on the BDP!.......2007-03-16
Well written. I had no idea the extent of this personality disorder and how to handle living around them. The author's use of examples provides a more hands on approach and ability for the reader to relate. Easy reading is always best when trying to understand a very difficult, complex and yet simple personality and the author did an excellent job articulating in a lay persons terms.
Thank you and keep on writing.
unprofessional in my opinion.......2007-01-06
the author in my opinion has never clinically interviewed, met, or examined Princess Diana while she was alive. To use her life episodes as though he is qualified to diagnose a person he has never met, is unprofessional and salacious in the extreme. As I understand it, it is not considered ethical in the helping professions to diagnose people one has not examined personally and at depth. I would recommend Walking on Eggshells, The Borderline Mother, and other serious books on borderline personality disorder that do not play fast and loose, but give real case studies that the author has absolute firsthand knowledge about.
BPD is too paintful a fact and too serious a subject to spend time reading a book that misappropriates the life of a dead woman who cannot answer the author's charges about her psychological states. If you live with a person who suffers from BPD or think you might suffer from BPD yourself, read a book that teaches coping skills and gives real cases in all their variations, and see a good shrink in person too.
One of the best introductions to this disorder and how it is treated.......2006-08-28
This is one of the best introductions to borderline personality that I know of. It is thorough and does a great job of explaining how the disease works in layman's terms. It also illustrates all the important aspects with excellent short examples.
This book is well written and is an enjoyable read. It is compassionate, but doesn't gloss over the facts. It also develops the topic in a logical manner and is easy to read over multiple sessions without having to do a lot of reviewing.
The sections on therapeutic approaches are very good and there is some excellent advice on finding a good therapist. While it lacks the detail on brain chemistry and research that is present in Borderline Personality Disorder Demystified, it makes up for in its readability and straightforward approach.
This is a good book for therapists, people from this affliction and also people dealing with family members or friends with this disorder. I highly recommend this volume as a first introduction to Borderline Personality Disorder.
Book Description
This Volume guides readers through the culinary and geographical landscape of France's golden province. A delicious cuisine incorporating traditional foods and methods. 250 recipes. Over 250 full-color photos, maps, and illustrations.
Amazon.com
Provence is loved for its sunlit beauty and earthy, tantalizing cuisine. Both are celebrated in Provence the Beautiful Cookbook, an oversized (more than two feet tall!) picture and cookbook of breathtaking color photos and authentic regional recipes. The 270 recipes, compiled and written by award-winning food book author Richard Olney, include soups and starters; seafood, meat, game, and poultry dishes; vegetable and grain specialties; and simple but luscious desserts. Readers seeking an armchair tour of the region, singularly depicted, and the chance to see and reproduce its dishes, will delight in the book, which would also make a welcome gift.
Beginning with an introduction to the land and its cooking, the book then weaves short essays about the Provençal regions with recipes arranged by courses. There are exemplary versions of bouillabaisse and bourride (the creamy, garlic-infused fish chowder), estouffade (braised beef, here with olives and mushrooms), daubs (stews), vegetable-filled omelets, and tians (savory gratins). Less familiar treasures include a mixed herb pasta from Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, porgy with crab sauce from the Var, a braised stuffed lamb shoulder from Vaucluse, zucchini and rice gratin from the Alpes Maritimes, and dried figs in thyme and red wine syrup, also from the Var. The recipes reflect Olney's unerring palate and dedication to tradition; some cooks may find certain dishes beyond their reach, but all will discover approachable recipes that are easily made. Wine information and a glossary conclude the portrait of Provence and its table--a feast for the eye and palate alike. --Arthur Boehm

Very nice.......2007-06-24
Having spent quite a bit of time in Provence I love to grab this book and go back there, remembering all the times and meals. Creating dishes from this book really helps me to enjoy Provence all over again.
Excellent.......2006-04-28
"Provence, The Beautiful Cookbook" by Richard Olney is a beautiful coffee table book filled with exquisite views and mouth-watering authentic dishes from this region of France.
Every time I look through this book, I feel like I am on an actual journey to Provence. And each time, I close this book, I feel a strong yearning to actually see this part of France with my own eyes!
This book is divided into food chapters, like most cookbooks, but also, there are chapters about different areas within this region: Alpes-Maritimes; Soups and Starters; Alpes-de-Haute-Provence; Fish and Shellfish; Vaucluse; Meat, Poultry and Gram; Bouches-du-Rhone; Vegetables and Grains; Var; and Desserts.
A wonderful book for lovers of Provence!
Good intro to Provencal cooking.......2001-11-27
I like this book, but it does point out one weakness in Provencal cooking...a slight lack of variety. There are multiple gratin recipes, good fish dishes, etc. It also doesn't shy away from organ meats, etc., much like the region itself. Like all the books in this visually stunning series, this one has lovely photography.
BIG AND BEAUTIFUL.......2000-07-22
I was a little suspicious of the series. After all, should we trust a book more suitably sized for the coffee table than for the kitchen counter? But my mistrust was misguided. The food is wonderful. All people have assumptions about "others," and one of the assumptions Americans make about the French is that their food is very difficult to prepare and relies on expensive ingredients. The truth is that French food need not be difficult and that it is a cuisine that recognizes the beauty of each season. Since my children bought this book for me, we have been building seasonal rituals around it. For example, we get salt anchovies from the neighborhood Italian deli for our Christmas eve appetizer. At Mardi Gras, we make the oreilles found in this book, which are the pastries sold as "pig's ears" or "angel wings" in the last days before Lent by Polish bakeries in Detroit. Depending on the bakery, they were known as "pig's ears" or "angels wings." My only criticism of the book is that I feel the need to keep it open in the dining room, lest kitchen grease spoils it.
Oh la la!.......2000-06-23
French born and 4th generation provençale, I take pride in the cuisine from my homeland and I have to confess I was a little wary about what I would find in this book. Well, the authors did a wonderful job at promoting the gastronomic traditions of Provence without betraying them. My grand-mother, our family's head-cook, and our culinary inspiration would have given her seal of approval without hesitation, would she have been around to discover this wonderful recipe collection and it is with her and my homeland in mind that I enjoy preparing the recipes featured in this excellent collection for my own enjoyment and the one of my (American) husband and our friends.
