Book Description

In her seventh captivating adventure, Jane Austen finds her crime-solving mettle put to the test in a confounding case of intrigue, murder, and high treason. Among the haunted ruins of an ancient abbey, Jane is drawn into a shadow world of dangerous secrets and traitorous hearts where not only her life is at stake—but the fate of England.

Jane and the Ghosts of Netley

As Jane Austen stands before the abandoned ruins of Netley Abbey, she imagines that ghosts really do haunt the centuries-old monastery. But the green-cloaked figure who startles her is all too human and he bears an unexpected missive from Lord Harold Trowbridge, one of the British government’s most trusted advisers—and a man who holds a high place in Jane’s life.Trowbridge tells Jane about a suspected traitor in their midst—and the disastrous consequences if she succeeds. But is Sophia Challoner, a beautiful widow with rumored ties to Emperor Bonaparte, really an agent of the enemy?

Dispatched to Netley Lodge, Jane sets about gaining the confidence of the mysterious and intriguing lady even as Trowbridge’s grim prediction bears fruit: a British frigate is set afire and its shipwright found with his throat cut. It’s clear that someone is waging a clandestine war of terror and murder. But before Jane can follow the trail of conspiracy to its source and unmask a calculating killer, the cold hand of murder will fall mercilessly yet again—and suddenly Jane may find herself dying for her country.

Elegantly intriguing, Jane and the Ghosts of Netley is a beautifully crafted novel of wit, character, and suspense that transports Jane and her many fans into a mystery of truly historical proportions—and a case that will test the amateur sleuth’s true colors under fire.

5 out of 5 stars The Best in the Series.......2007-06-07

This book is the best of the entire series. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars I'd give it 6 stars if I could.......2007-01-10

Barron is amazingly thrilling in this the 7th book in the Jane Austen Mystery series. Throughout the series we've gained glimpses of Jane's life and how dull it is without a mystery to solve and without a certain Gentleman Rouge to liven things up.
This book was wonderful, containing delightful dialogue between Jane and her Rouge, interesting characters in Orlando, Sophia Challoner, Mr. Ord, the man in black and ties to reality in Mrs. Fitzherbert. Set against the background of the mysterious Netley Abbey, calling to mind Austen's Northanger Abbey, along with the tensions of stopping further mischief from occurring that would injure the Crown's attempts to keep the Monster in check. Tightly wound from beginning until the end, this one is one of the best in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Top Of The Line.......2006-07-05

I have truly enjoyed reading Stephanie Barron's Jane Austen mysteries. For any lover of Austen, Barron has fittingly placed the authoress as a sleuth worthy of the mysteries she solves. "Jane and the Ghosts of Netley", the seventh book in the series, is perhaps one of finest tales in the saga.

As always, trouble and mischief seem to follow Jane Austen wherever she goes, much to her mother's chagrin. In the autumn of 1808, she finds herself in Southampton, and soon is embroiled in another mysterious affair. The dastardly plans of Napoleon and the threat of battle has everyone in England on their toes. When Jane is employed by Lord Harold Trowbridge to keep an eye on Mrs. Challoner, a supposed French spy, Jane finds herself wondering if he isn't mistaken in his assumption of the lady's guilt. But when a naval ship is torched and its designer found murdered, Jane has little recourse but to spy and try to uncover the truth, even at her own peril.

As usual, Barron sets out that the story is a diary that Austen kept and that she is merely editing, interspersing notes to enlighten readers on historical matters or customs of the day. It is a technique that works quite well and vivdly brings Jane Austen to life. Barron has a compassionate eye for what burdens Austen encountered that grant them a ring of reality and respect. However, there is a bittersweet quality to these novels, for it makes readers wish that Jane Austen herself did indeed have these adventures, and that there was more of her legacy to read.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE THESE JANE AUSTEN MYSTERY SERIES!.......2006-03-22

Stephanie Barron has written 8 Jane Austen Mystery Series Novels and they are wonderfully entertaining! The books are proposed to be adapted from lost Jane Austen journals and although I have a hard time believing that Jane Austen could have possibly been faced with this many dangerous events in her short life, I thoroughly enjoyed the books. I had my doubts of how good the books could be from the fact that there are so many for sell and so inexpensive for a hardback book; however I have been very surprised with how wonderfully light and fun they are to read.

To my expectations Ms. Barron keeps up with Jane Austen very well. I particularly like the footnotes giving some history of the times and explaining what some of the meanings of the words are. The books start out a little slow but by the time you are about 1/4 into them you are hooked and cannot put the book down.

This Ghosts of Netley is really good and has a wonderful surprise ending, as most of the Jane Austen Mystery Series do.

If you like Jane Austen and you like mysteries, then you will really enjoy the books.

5 out of 5 stars another winner in this fine series.......2005-05-26

This is such a great series. Stephanie Barron captures Austen's technique better than any other imitator,, and her books are interesting in their own right, being the rather extraordinary adventures of a Georgian spinster.

It is the autumn of 1808 in Southampton, where Jane and her mother and friend currently reside. Jane's sister-in-law Elizabeth has just died and the family is in mourning. Nearby the impressive ruins of Netley Abbey casts a sinister air over events as a mysterious, and perhaps treasonous, widow moves into the local manse and befriends Jane, who likes the woman despite Lord Harold Trowbridge's cautions. Yes, dear Lord Harold figures prominently in this story, which I always enjoy.

SO, the story is fun, the history is interesting to Anglophiles, and Barron's writing is superb. What's not to enjoy?

This book is your standard issue Storyteller guide. Complete with Q&A, essays on changeling, alternate histories and locations, etc. While I am a big fan of Changeling, I must say that this book is a very average addition to the series. Nothing really revoltingly bad (Like the editing in "Inanime; the Secret Way), nothing really extradordinarily good (Like the... well Changeling doesn't really have a great book). Just a very average book with some nice ideas. Get it if you must, skip it if you must. No difference.

When Terrence Real was studying to be a therapist, he accepted the notion that women suffered depression at rates several times that of men. Now he believes that conventional wisdom is wrong, that there has been a great cultural cover-up of depression in men. Real is convinced of the existence of a mental illness that is passed from fathers to sons in the form of rage, workaholism, distanced relationships from loved ones, and self-destructive behaviors ranging from stupid choices at work and in love to drug and alcohol abuse. Men reading I Don't Want to Talk About It will probably recognize themselves in every chapter, while women will recognize their partners--and, of course, both sexes will see their fathers in a new light.

      Book Description

Twenty years of experience treating men and their families has convinced

psychotherapist Terrence Real that depression is a silent epidemic in men -- that

men hide their condition from family, friends, and themselves to avoid the stigma

of depression's "un-manliness." Problems that we think of as typically

male -- difficulty with intimacy, workaholism, alcoholism, abusive behavior, and

rage-are really attempts to escape depression. And these escape attempts only

hurt the people men love and pass their condition on to their children.

This groundbreaking book is the "pathway out of darkness" that these men and

their families seek. Real reveals how men can unearth their pain, heal

themselves, restore relationships, and break the legacy of abuse. He mixes

penetrating analysis with compelling tales of his patients and even his own

experiences with depression as the son of a violent, depressed father and the

      father of two young sons.

      Download Description

Each year, millions of men and women fall prey to depression. While the disorder has been called "psychiatry's most treatable condition", less than one in five get help. In recent years, the silence surrounding depression in women has begun to lift, but only now, with this powerful groundbreaking work, does psychotherapist Terrence Real expose a virtual epidemic of the disorder in men. Twenty years of experience treating men and their families has convinced Terrence Real that there are two forms of depression: "overt" and "covert". Feeling the stigma of depression's "unmanliness", many men hide their condition not only from family and friends but even from themselves. Attempts to escape depression fuel many of the problems we think of as typically male - difficulty with intimacy, workaholism, alcoholism, abusive behavior, and rage. By directing their pain outward, depressed men hurt the people they love, and, most tragically, pass their condition on to their children. A master storyteller, Terrence Real mixes penetrating analysis with poignant, compelling tales of the men and women whom he treats. He writes with passion and searing clarity about his own experiences with depression, as the son of a depressed, violent father, and the father of two young sons.

Should be required reading for every male because it would help them to much greater happiness. If we all realized how male socialization helps mold ALL males, willingly AND unwillingly become soldiers treating ALL of their interactions as battles and ALL people as enemies or potential enemies who must be controlled or defeated.

5 out of 5 stars An uncomfortable but needed book.......2007-08-11

This is the second book on male depression I have read (first being Archibald Hart's Understanding Male Depression and out of print). Not written from a Christian perspective but a good read and useful for all men at every age-in other words, it's never too late nor too early to read this book! He has an insightful discussion about the active and passive abuse that occurs to many men in the socialization process, a process that teaches us to hold emotions at a distance. What I take away from the book is that many men suffer from covert or overt depression. They have learned to cover up the pain of their depression with addictive behavior which may lead to abuse or irresponsibility toward others and by keeping relationships at a distance emotionally. When things collapse or their self-medication attempts fail, the depression breaks out.

One of my favorite quotes: "The essential shift in question that marks a depressed man's transformation is the shift from: What shall I get? to: What can I offer? . . . Recovery demands a move into generativity." 321

If you are in a relationship with a depressed person, this book can help save your sanity. Depression is very insideous and destructive. This book can help you avoid some of the pitfalls and understand what drives your depressed loved one. My therapist recommended it and it truly helped me see the illness for what it is.

2 out of 5 stars Overcoming? Not Quite.......2007-04-03

This was a very well written book, and has plenty to sympathize with. The portions about forced male gender roles contributing to ongoing inner turmoil isn't bad, though i'm not entirely convinced that's a major contributing factor to male depression.

The big problem here is: THIS IS NOT A SELF HELP BOOK. The title is "overcoming" male depression, but the author does not lay out a game plan. What he tells you, you've already been told: Go find a shrink. Great. So much for saving thousands of dollars on years of therapy on a do-it-yourself approach.

      2 out of 5 stars Disppointed.......2007-01-11

This is a difficult read, its mostly composites and difficult to glean any real clinical information. Admittedly i haven't gotten though the entire book yet. Unmasking Male Depression is much better for clinical information, if you can stomach being preached at.

Winner of Today's Librarian "Best Children's Resource" award!

When a child's parents tell her they have decided to divorce, the last thing she wants to do is talk about it. Instead, she wants to roar as loud as a lion so she can't hear their painful words, or turn into a fish and hide her tears in the sea, or even become a bird and fly away. But with her mother and father's help, she starts to consider what life will be like after divorce and learns that although some things will change, many other things will remain the same. Most importantly, she realizes that although her parents may not agree about much, one thing they do agree on is that they both love her very much and will always be her mom and dad.

I Don't Want To Talk About It features a comprehensive afterword that describes children's common reactions to divorce and offers parents suggestions for helping their own children adjust and thrive.

I thought this book was terribly negative and would actually make children feel worse. I do not rec it for young children. I bought it to read with my 6 yr old and will not let her see it.

      1 out of 5 stars No Thank-you.......2007-02-09

Overall I did not enjoy this book. The general over tone felt quite negative.

      2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-01-05

After reading the positive reviews of this book, I went ahead and bought it without reading it. Big mistake. It is a very strange and confusing book. It assumes that small children understand the depth and meaning of the word "divorce" yet can not understand or articulate any of their own feelings. It also depicts the "fairy tale" divorce, where the parents are mature enough to sit down to confront their child and actually "talk about it" together--as well as agree to divide time with the child equally afterwards. I read this before I read it to my son, and I was going to give it away, but he begged and begged to read it when he caught a glimpse of it. So I read it to him anyway and he really hated it. He thought the animals were scary, and he thought the girl was mean and a real whiner. Overall, he seemed to feel that the book was just confusing and negative. My son and I MUCH preferred Goodbye Daddy, which is much more positive and gentle, acknowledging hurt, but emphasizing keeping a positive attitude. I suppose if you have a feisty daughter who doesn't understand her feelings and you're having the perfect divorce, then I Don't Want to Talk About It may be for you. But it sure wasn't for us.

      5 out of 5 stars I don't want to talk about it.......2005-08-06

Great book to read to kids who are dealing with divorce

4 out of 5 stars Recommendation despite initial misgivings.......2004-05-10

Though I was initially put off by the stark whiteness of the characters, I highly recommend this book to anyone going through divorce with young children. This book reads like poetry, is beautifully illustrated, and gets to the point quickly. All this allowed my active 4 year old son to be taken in on the first read, ask for it a second time, and actually start TALKING about his feelings!

I grew up on recipes from this book and never knew how spoiled I was until I went to college and tried cafeteria food, with my back up being ramen noodles. It's awesome that they finally put it back in print, and I am thoroughly surprised that there are any left in stores. It is tastefully done with great pictures and plenty of culture and historical tidbits to go along with the recipes. Not to mention the actual recipes are fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Noteworthy: The recipes are just that.......2002-01-16

I own both Noteworthy and Noteworthy II, recipes from the Ravinia festival and I cannot say enough about them. For nearly eight years now, I have used these cookbooks for every family gathering, cocktail party and family meal. My love of cooking was stimulated by the recipes provided in these books which are both easy to follow and delicious. I have not yet found one recipe I didn't enjoy after preparation. Noteworthy is well organized and has sections of great photographs to entice you to select one of it's great dishes. You will dazzle your guests with the wonderful combinations and not feel like you had to try to hard. These books are among my favorite possessions, I'd be lost without them. You'll not be disappointed...ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars Far and away my favorite cookbook-everything is delicious.......1999-11-18

This cookbook is a marvel--it is far and away my favorite cookbook. I turn to it for every event, and it contains all my family's favorite dishes. One note, however, follow the recipies closely! Omitting or changing any ingredient really alters things substantially (I don't like olives and left them out of a dish and it truly sufferred for it. When I made it again, I added the olives and it is now a favorite!) This book is an excellent gift idea.
