Book Description

On the banks of the scenic Truxton River, nestled in rolling woodlands just minutes from the nation's capital lies Gryphon Gate. Drawn to its breathtaking view of the Chesapeake Bay, Henry Drysdale selected this waterfront location to create a premier gated community where the rich and privileged residents live, work, and play. Tempers flare when Vanessa, Henry's ex, decides to build Forest Glen, a 300-unit condominium development on an adjoining tract of land. The Gryphon Gate town meeting disintegrates into a free-for-all as environmentalists, developers, residents, and the media clash.

1 out of 5 stars couldn't get past the 4th chapter.......2006-11-20

This book was terrible and I put it down after the 4th chapter. I've read some of these authors before and expected much more than they delivered. The story is hokey, there are too many dull, unlikeable characters, and it was just a really unenjoyable read.

This type of writing exercise rarely works outside of a classroom, and it definitely didn't work here.

2 out of 5 stars Painful to read.......2005-09-03

I thought the idea of having each author write a different chapter was a great idea, however after reading this book I was extremely disappointed. Each author clearly had their own vision of how this story should develop, but they did not all have the same vision making this novel very confusing. There are way too many characters and it seems that even up to the end new ones were being added. There were no main characters that had you engaged in their lives. It was just a mess. Chapters 11 and 12 were well developed and flowed together nicely as if those two authors understood each other. As for the last chapter, well it had a different twist to the plot in almost every chapter. It was literally over done. Never along the entire book were the characters introduced as suspects. It was all just a bunch of victims with no real villains so the authors seemed to feel the need to create more characters and then try and tie the story up with a weak ending.
This book is not even worth checking out from the library. It is just painful to read. I hate to say that when there are so many good authors collaborating in this novel, but perhaps there were too many and not enough unity. Don't waste your money on this one.

5 out of 5 stars A round robin mystery.......2005-03-08

This novel has 13 chapters, each written by a different author.
Gayle Lynds starts off with chapter one, and each subsequent author adds details and new directions to the plot. It finally reaches an explosive climax in the final chapter written by Katherine Neville.

I had started reading the mystery a chapter at a time, but when I got into the final chapters it was hard to put down. The chapter about the church service, by Julie Smith, was a real hoot. The final chapters get into intrigue and machinations by some of the nouveau riche. Some people seem obsessed with wealth and social trappings. What shallow lives some people lead.

Like collections of short stories, the novel gives some leads on authors to check out further. It is a good mystery to read on a rainy evening, and I finished it curled up on the sofa as cold rain poured down outside.

5 out of 5 stars Something for everybody.......2004-07-05

Okay, I admit it. I'm a guy and I only picked up this book because one of my favorite thriller writers, Gayle Lynds, wrote the first chapter. But after that, I was hooked. This zany send-up of modern suburban life will appeal to everyone, not just those of us who live in gated communities like (well, not exactly like, thank goodness!) Gryphon Gate, the setting for this novel. You won't be able to get some of the characters out of your mind -- Col. McClintock (self-appointed organizer of the managed deer hunt), the widow Toni and her daughter, Miranda (who want to save Bambi's mother), ruthless developer Vanessa, tortured Roman Gervase, the sex-starved Rev. Peter Armbruster and his pinch-faced wife, Laura ... And the book also features one of the most unusual murder methods I've ever heard of. Buy the book, fix yourself a tall glass of iced tea, settle down in that beach chair by the pool and ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars I laughed my head off!.......2004-07-05

This is a really good book! I laughed from beginning to end. Even though it was written by 13 different women with 13 different writing styles, it flows smoothly, but you still get tantalizing hints of each author's individuality -- Kathy Reich's forensics expertise(of course!), Heather Graham's background writing romance novels, Julie Smith's knowledge of Santeria, Jennifer Crusie's trademark wit, Anne Perry's psychological insights, and so on. Gayle Lynds sets the plot in motion -- Gryphon Gate residents are receiving threatening faxes -- and the story gallops along from there. Katherine Neville, best known for her sprawling historical novels, wraps everything up in a most entertaining and satisfying way. I wasn't familiar with some of the authors, but will definitely be looking for their books in the future.

        Book Description

In this widely acclaimed series, Card has created an alternate frontier America where folk magic really works. The adventure that began in Seventh Son continues in "Alvin Journeyman," the fourth book in the series, when Alvin is driven from his home by false accusations back to Hatrack River where he must stand trial for his life.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Addition.......1999-03-22

OSC continues to develop the characters very vividly in this fourth installment of the Alvin Maker series. Alvin's growth into manhood and out of angry adolescence brings a new aspect of Alvin into view. A departure from the same character base is refreshing and hopefully will bring more character development in future installments.

I'd say that the book is excellent and is a must read for all those who have followed the series. OSC continues in his masterful character development. The only thing preventing me from giving this book the 5 stars is my ability to put down the book for later reading...perhaps it is because I have been reading too many books recently.

4 out of 5 stars Leaves you wanting more.......1997-06-26

The book was well written and keeps with the flow of the other three, but there are a number of characters that have been dropped. I read the book within a week and enjoyed the new plot twists, but I am wondering if Card can finish this series in 5. It would be quite a task, and I hope he ties everything up better than this book would leave you to believe he can. I recommend this book for those that have loved the previous titles, and hope you don't come to the same conclusions I have

5 out of 5 stars The story grows in interest and wonder.......1997-01-06

I cannot recommend this book and series enough. My wife turned me on to the series and I am eagerly awaiting all future installments. Alvin seems destined for greatness, but like all great men, considers himself "just a normal man". I can't wait to see how he and the Indians of this alternate U.S. build his glorious city. This story also is terrific in how it shows the love/hate relationship between Alvin and Peggy, and how she had to voluntarily lose him in order to find him and their relationship together.

              Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars a lot of reading for little substance.......2005-06-03

The Alvin Maker series starts off with a unique and fascinating alternate history of a world where people have "knacks" which allow them to do what would be considered "magic" to most of us. Alvin's knack is "making" and the first two books explained his world and shaped his character through some interesting and unique experiences.

The third book signalled the beginning of a decline in the series as Card moves toward his favored story of a main male character (Alvin) who is supposedly noble and good above all else. The third book is saved by an interesting and appropriate storyline about slavery but the same cannot be said of the fourth.

Unfortunately, in the fourth book, he makes the Alvin behave so stupidly as a means of attempting to martyr him that the reader soon loses respect for the main character. There is honor in self-sacrifice but not in someone who thinks that covering up the lies and misdeeds of others is a form of "good". Doesn't Card ever think it might be interesting to explore the theme of fostering positive character growth in others by having their lies and misdeeds dealt with directly by the person who they have harmed? I'm not talking about Rambo-type behavior but the fact that the Ender's series, the Homecoming series, and now the Alvin Maker series have pathetic men who believe bad decisions make them strong and noble is getting tiresome.

The worst part isn't the retread of the same old story but the fact that this story simply goes on and on and seems to have very little point other than to drag poor undeserving Alvin through the muck and have him sit by and do diddly about it. This is not only uninteresting for the reader but actively annoying.

Other reviewers have pointed out that this book brings together a cast of characters that will eventually serve a purpose in future novels in the series. I believe that those characters could have been brought in through a much less drawn-out and tedious storyline. Essentially, a few chapters of a novel which continues the move toward building the Crystal City (Alvin's ultimate goal as outlined in The Red Prophet) should have done it rather than subjecting us to no less than 3 separate liars accusing Alvin of various misdeeds and us having to suffer through excruciating details.

I decided after reading this book that this would be absolutely the last series of Card's novels I'd ever read. He's an excellent writer but he needs to tighten up his writing and get a new character or two. Ender, Nafai and Alvin are all just too similarly spineless.

3 out of 5 stars Slow but worth it.......2004-09-10

This novel was an interesting story to the Alvin Maker series. I did enjoy the story and the adventures that Card told but I felt that this story was a stopping point-a temporary detour as he regrouped. I felt that this tale was an attempt to finish the story he started and gather the characters he needed to reach the Crystal City.

This is a very important book in the series. It introduces characters that I feel are going to be fundamental to the conclusion of the Alvin Maker series. If have been enjoying this gift from Card, you need to pick this book up and struggle through the slight lulls and finish this one.

4 out of 5 stars Another great story within a story.......2004-02-03

I originally read this several years ago, and re-read it recently after getting the new book in the series. As I read this series as a whole, I am staring to notice that the individual stories form each book (The war in Red Prophet, the story of Arthur Stuart in Prentice Alvin, and the trial in this book) and the new characters that keep coming along, are starting to overshadow the overall story of Alvin's quest to build the Crystal City.

This book started a little slowly, so I thought it might not have been as interesting as the previous books in the series, as often happens once you get this deep into a series. But with the introduction of Verily Cooper and Alvin's trial, the book really picks up the pace. I look forward to re-reading the next book (Heartfire) followed by the The Crystal City, which will hopefully conclude the series.

If you've enjoyed the other books in this series, you probably won't be disappointed by this one.

3 out of 5 stars Maintaining the decline.......2003-02-16

The positive: Affable characters, fast moving, easy to read.
              The negative: Uninteresting plot.

Although slightly better than the previous book in this series, Card still doesn't manage to recreate the magic of the first two. In this book, the bulk of the tale is involved in Alvin facing trial for being wrongly accused of theft. Many characters are introduced based on characters created in an AOL chatroom by Card's fans and this book gives the impression much of it was written to coddle those fans and feature their characters. Not an entire waste of time but don't go into this series thinking each of the books will be as entertaining as the others.

              5 out of 5 stars Thief!.......2002-12-11

Alvin is accused of theft by Makepeace Smith, his former Master. The book explores what happens as Alvin tries to clear his name.

Much happens in this book, which is a continuation of Card's "Alvin Maker" series. There are some real surprises and some characters I didn't expect to come back, which come back in unexpected ways.

In Inflammation Nation, internationally renowned scientist Dr. Floyd H. Chilton exposes the root cause of a host of seemingly disparate diseases, such as arthritis, heart disease, obesity, eczema, lupus, Alzheimer's, and emphysema: unbridled inflammation. The average American diet (even when we're making what we think are healthy choices) is inflaming our immune systems. But with Dr. Chilton's revolutionary, all-natural dietary program, you can learn how to choose foods that will help prevent, treat, and reverse the effects of this secret epidemic in as few as seven days.

                    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars He's right about inflammation, you know........2007-10-06

I just finished this book. It was a light and interesting read. I gave it five stars because I believe that despite how the material was delivered -- it is an extremely important subject that is, overall, quite esoteric. Thus, for his field one can't criticize too harshly.

The book itself I felt like it could, as other reviewers have said, had a little more emphasis on an actual plan. Instead of giving a plan he demonstrated it with *ideas* for meals. I really wanted some more specific nutritional content instead of an overall "index." But hey, maybe I'm just a little bit of a science geek at heart. (Give me real numbers, not made up units!) Though, clearly, this book was intended for the common man -- for the nation -- not for a scientist at heart.

One thing that surprised me is how little supplementation of omega 3 EPA he recommended. Perhaps this was because he expected us to be getting it from the better meals we would be eating? Some studies on depression/bipolar, among other things recommend supplementing as much as 2 GRAMS of EPA per day, many of which have impressive outcomes! (Can this amount be achieved simply by eating "right?" Perhaps this high ammount is therapeautic)

But the important things that were introduced to me in this book that despite all of my reading of scientific studies, and prowling around on the net for information on inflammatory disease, I had never run across comes from the insightful review of the effects of arachidonic acid -- an insidious omega 6 fatty acid in our diet responsible for much of our immune problems as a nation, and the effects of an important supplement I'd entirely neglected to ever look into: borage oil.

Over all, this book had great information in it that even an otherwise well-informed guy like me could use! For all of it's shortcomings it offers something that's great, and I think, could stop a LOT of misery in this world! If I have any criticism, it is that it felt geared a little too much towards the average joe! But this isn't a bad thing... it just serves a bigger purpose and that is helping the common man, instead of being simply of academic appeal.

                    Highly recommended.

                    2 out of 5 stars extreme deficiency.......2007-03-27

What the authors say about inflammation and arachidonic acid is true and significant, but the lask of mention of other causes of inflammation is hard to forgive. Not a word is said about toxins, homocysteine, infections, oxidants, or inflammatory vegetable oils. among many causes of inflammation. YOu might try THE INFLAMMATION SYNDROME, or HONEST NUTRITION.

4 out of 5 stars interesting reading, not perfect.......2007-03-10

Very interesting take on diet and metabolism that I have not seen anywhere else. I recommend the book for that reason. Even so, it has a couple of shortcomings. Firstly, Chilton is a researcher and he mentions conducting six research studies on AA. But he gives no details (although one paper is attached as an appendix) - no high-level overview of how the pieces came together, how the studies proceeded, how many participants, nature of the results in each study. Secondly as other people have noted, his plan of action is rather vague. He is absolutely clear about two foods to avoid - farmed salmon and eggs. He then gives a table of every food that has been measured by the USDA for its AA content and lists them in order, but it's less useful than you might think, with weird listings like chitterlings and pork skins. And the main text is also vague - at one point (p.95) he mentions beef and lamb as being low in AA. But his food pyramid shows beef and pork, no lamb. No mention of whether industrially farmed meat/eggs are worse than naturally raised. Worth it for the info about AA though, speculative as it is at the moment.

1 out of 5 stars Need to be a NY Nutrionist.......2006-10-09

I bought this book in an effort to help myself w/fibromyalgia pain. I actually bought "WInning the War" which is the newest book, which Prevention Mag. sent a free copy to review before buying. After coming on line here, one reveiw indicated it was nearly the same as Inflammation Nation. I went to local bookstore, found inflammation Nation there for far less than the $40 Prevention/Rodale books wanted for his Winning the War book. These are just about as identical as 2 books can get. I find the book contains much information and is well written. However, like many who wrote, it's almost not a book to be readl but rather studied. I find I have had to take notes of this and that, and these AA's and so much more that the general public most likely wouldn't understand. I was disappointed that there is not a list of substitute type foods, esp. in my case, where I don't eat fish at all. Overall, a good book for reference on which foods carry more inflammation, but I think I need to focus on seeing a nutrionist more, who can work with me one on one per se, and make any adjustments I may need. I just found it very involved, and somewhat complicated for one who's not dieted per se before for inflammation sake.

                    3 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2006-09-01

I was very disappointed when I opened this book. I thought I was reading his other book, WINNING THE WAR WITHIN, with a new cover. Essentially I was. There is not enough new information in this book to justify buying both. It should have been published as a newer version of the old book, not a totally new book. Sorry, it is well written, an awful lot of good and well presented information, but feel like I was charged twice for the same book. If you don't own the War Within, then by all means, buy this book. If you do, then I'd pass. Thank you.

4 out of 5 stars Nice primer on preparing egg based dishes.......2006-06-29

A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years, concentrating on Italian cooking for the last 10 years, writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry".

This book is a nice addition to a cookbook collection for those are new to cooking egg dishes.

The book is subdivided as follows:
                    1. Introduction: Egg, freshness and storage
                    2. Savory Omelettes
                    3. Frittatas
                    4. Souffles and Souffle Omelettess

The majority of the book is cooking of France and Italy, as the title implies. There is however a few recipes from other ethnicities.

The directions for the recipes are well written and easy to follow, even for those that aren't too familiar with cooking egg dishes. Her description of the traditional French omelette and how to prepare it properly, is thorough. The author also does a nice job of covering rolled filled souffles. Her section on the dessert souffles was my personal favorite. I particularly enjoyed her recipe for "Coconut Souffle with Mango and Kiwi".

If you are new to cooking egg dishes, this is nice book to get you started to find out if you enjoy them. However, if you are an old hand at the cooking omelettes and souffles, this may not have enough new material for you.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for someone ready to take on souffles........2006-01-16

This book explains eggs perfectly. It even has a section on properly separating your eggs, so it's a perfect book for someone new to cooking. Particularly with eggs.

I was very worried about making a souffle. However, following the White Chocolate souffle recipe with raspberry sauce, I made my first souffle perfectly. It was gorgeous, breathtaking, delicious..... everything I dreamed a souffle should be.

The other recipe I used was the Southwestern frittata. I agree with the previous reviewer that the chemistry didn't seem right. I felt like it needed at least one more egg to cover all the chicken and veggies. However, it turned out ok, and still tasted wonderful. Next time, I think I will add less chicken.

All in all -- great book, even for beginners. I recommend this book for someone wanting to try their hand at eggs. :)

                    3 out of 5 stars Disappointed . . ........2005-12-14

Having read the good reviews, I purchased this cookbook. And after trying several of the recipes, I have to say that I am disapppointed. To be fair, I haven't tried most of the recipes, but the ones I did try did not turn out well. I am a long-time cook and cookbook collector and know how to follow a recipe and how to adjust recipes for individual tastes. In the Tomato, Basil & Zucchini Frittata recipe, for example, the chemistry does not work. Four eggs is not enough to bind all the other ingredients together. One must either decrease the vegetables, or increase the amount of eggs for the frittata to even hold together. Reading some of the other frittata recipes, it seems to me that the same problem exists. Has anyone else run into this same problem? I'd be interested in knowing . . . The reason I didn't give the book just one or two stars based on my experience is that, as mentioned above, I haven't tried (or been motivated to try) many of the other recipes.

                    5 out of 5 stars Beautifully presented.......2003-09-04

This is a beautifully presented cookbook focusing on (in three separate sections): omelettes, frittatas and souffles (in that order - presumably from easiest to most difficult). The pictures are lovely and the recipes printed in an attractive and easy to read format. None of them seem to be too complicated, and I have confidence that with practice, I'll be able to put these lovely egg-based foods on the table with great satisfaction. I want to read over the introductory sections which explain how to fold ingredients into an omelette and how to do the egg whites in a souffle correctly. Frittatas were new to me and I enjoyed learning how you brown the tops. This is a great book and I want to look for more by this author.
