Book Description
New York Times bestselling author Suzanne Brockmann knows exactly what makes hearts race and pulses pound: peril and passion. No one succeeds more brilliantly at blending these exhilarating elements in breathtaking novels of men and women forced to grapple with the deepest emotions and the highest risks. And there’s no better proof than her new novel of suspense: Hot Target aims to thrill on every level
.
Like most men of action, Navy SEAL Chief Cosmo Richter never learned how to take a vacation. So when he finds himself facing a month’s leave, he offers his services to Troubleshooters Incorporated. Founded by a former SEAL, the private-sector security firm is a major player in the ongoing war against terrorism, known for carrying out covert missions too volatile for official U.S. military action. But the first case Richter takes on is anything but under the radar.
High-profile maverick movie producer Jane Mercedes Chadwick hasn’t quite completed her newest film, but she’s already courting controversy. The World War II epic frankly portrays the homosexuality of a real-life hero–and the storm of advance media buzz surrounding it has drawn the fury of extremist groups. But despite a relentless campaign of angry E-mails, phone calls, and smear tactics, Chadwick won’t be pressured into abandoning the project. Then the harassment turns to death threats.
While the FBI appears on the scene, nervous Hollywood associates call in Troubleshooters, and now Chadwick has an army of round-the-clock bodyguards, whether she likes it or not. And she definitely doesn’t. But her stubbornness doesn’t make FBI agent Jules Cassidy’s job any easier. The fiercely independent filmmaker presents yet another emotional obstacle that Cassidy doesn’t need–he’s already in the midst of a personal tug-of-war with his ex-lover, while fighting a growing attraction to Chadwick’s brother.
Determined to succeed–and survive–on her own terms, Chadwick will face off with enemies and allies alike. But she doesn’t count on the bond she forms with the quiet, capable Cosmo Richter. Yet even as their feelings bring them closer, the noose of deadly terror all around them draws tighter. And when all hell erupts, desire and desperate choices will collide on a killing ground that may trap them both in the crossfire.

Hits the target.......2007-09-19
There is not a bad part to this book. Jane and Cosmo are far and away one of the best couples in romance. The WWII story was great, the secondary love story was original and captivating. Highly recommended for anyone with an open mind.
If I'd wanted a gay romance novel . . . . .......2007-09-18
. . . . . then I would have happily purchased and finished listening to this book. But the summary of the book is very misleading. And I'm sorry if this irritates the politically correct crowd, but I'm definitely NOT interested in gay romance stories.
If Brockmann had been upfront about her intentions with this book, then I think I'd feel differently, but the tactics that she used in order to "trick" potential readers of this book were underhanded and disgusting.
Despite really liking two of her other novels I'd already read, her covert agenda push in this book disappoints me to the extent that I stopped listening to the story when it was only about halfway finished, and I'm definitely considering not listening to/reading her remaining and future books.
Another Wonderful Brockmann Read.......2007-03-08
As usual, Suzanne Brockmann has created true-to-life characters and situations. As usual, I could not put it down until I finished it. She has a way of engrossing you in the story and character problems so that you can't wait to see how it all turns out. Her SEALs are all men to die for, yet have human flaws that make them real rather than plastic. Her heroines have the deep seated fears that many of us share. I would recommend any of her books highly.
Hot Target.......2007-02-16
I'm totally hooked on her books, I feel I know the people she's writing about. I have all her Navy Seal books.
A slight departure from usual stories but very good.......2007-01-18
While "Flashpoint" was a very good book, it felt a little heavy due to the situation, especially Sophia's part of the story. So I was slightly hesitant about starting "Hot Target" since I wasn't sure I was in the mood.
I was very pleasantly surprised. "Hot Target" is not a "light" book by any definition but the complete switch from a war-torn, savage country in "Flashpoint" to Hollywood for "Hot Target" made for a welcome change of pace while still maintaining Brockmann's usual combination of suspense, mystery and great pacing.
Brockmann did her usual deft job in pairing up the seemingly different Jane, a Hollywood movie producer who knows how to work the media, and Cosmo, the Navy SEAL who intimidates his tough-as-nails teammates, in a gradual, believable way.
But my favorite part was long-time supporting character Jules Cassidy and his problems with his old lover Adam returning (has Adam really changed?) and an attraction to Robin, Jane's actor brother who is so deep in denial about his sexuality that he's hurting other people, like Jane's naive intern, Patty. Gay characters in romance novels are usually relegated to being the supportive best friend or relative and heaven forbid they touch or kiss someone unless it's a joke, misunderstanding or show of support. Huge kudos to Brockmann for handling gay romantic entanglements with sensitivity and great reality. When Jules refused to be Robin's "experiment" or let Robin get away with the old "I was drunk" excuse, I was simultaneously proud of Jules and very sad that he can't seem to catch a break romantically.
I also loved the real Jack Shelton and the scene between him and his long-time partner, especially since it confirmed to Jules that he shouldn't settle for less than his heart's desire.
Technically I would give this book 4 1/2 stars but Amazon won't allow that. It's better than 4 stars but I don't think it's up to the level of her next book, "Breaking Point," which is definitely a 5 star book.
That said, the Sam & Alyssa short story bonus at the end of the book should get 5 stars all by itself. Brockmann did a wonderful role reversal on the typical "my spouse is half a world away in danger and all I can do is wait" situation. It was also far too timely and poignent with the current situation with our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was also nice to see Meg, Joan and Savannah again, albeit briefly. I also loved Sam's phone call at the end to John.

Best One EVER!!!.......2005-06-23
This is the best book! in the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys uper Mystery. Although it does have some questions such as how did Nancy get in the FBI? I don't know. If you put that all aside, its and action packed aventure. Betrayl, adventure, and..... murder are all in this one book. This is a must read! (if you have read this already, read Evil in Amsterdam. That's the second best Nancy Drew and Hardy boys Super Mystery. ALMOST came in first but Spies and Lies pulled through!)
I failed to suspend my disbelief..........2003-08-31
To enjoy a work of fiction, you have to be able to suspend your disbelief. That is, the author has to give you a setting that you think could be plausible in this or some other world.
But, really, people, do you think that Nancy Drew, age 18, can pass herself off in FBI spy school as having not only completed college, but also having a master's degree in French?
And Frank and Joe, posing as college graduates and computer whizzes, are once again working for the mysterious Network, who apparently doesn't have any high school graduates who are capable of doing anything.
The guilty characters are... well, let's just say that was beyond belief as well. Not surprising, exactly, but still beyond belief.
While it's definitely action-packed (which boys will like, whereas I believe they'll hate most of the books in this series), and the FBI school setting is interesting, I think this might have been the worst book qua book in the Supermystery series.
spies and lies...........2002-12-15
i really liked this nancy drew and hardy boys super mystery. it was intriuging and suspenseful. i especially liked the ending of it because it was hard to guess who the culprit of the crime was. joe and frank's mystery was not as good as nancy's in the story though. which is okay because a lot of times their mystery is a lot more suspenseful. as for the romance aspect a different guy other then frank liked nancy and i really want nancy and frank to hook up so i was disappointed but overall it was a smashing book.
WOW- Suprise Ending!.......2002-02-28
When Nancy Drew goes undercover at the FBI Academy to protect a trainee, she has no idea that Frank and Joe Hardy are there as well. Nancy has been asked to be a 'guardian angel' for Judy Noll, the senator's daughter. An unknown assasin has already tried to kill Judy once, and the FBI needs some help. Soon after she arrives, Nancy meets Frank and Joe, who are also posing as trainees. They are working 'to expose a corrupt FBI agent in an industrial espionage scheme.' All is normal at first. Then Judy's roomate, Erin, is found murdered on a jogging trail. The hypothesis is that the killer mistaked her for Judy. Nancy decides that the only way she can save Judy is to pretend to be Judy. Set herself up as the target. Both girls look alike. Then Nancy stumbles upon a dark secret which changes the whole situation. The question isn't "Who wants Judy murdered?" but it's "Who wants Erin killed?"
Meanwhile, Frank and Joe are on their own assignment. Though I personally think Nancy's part is the more exciting one, F and J have big parts in the book as well. A good mystery for anyone, with a special twist at the end. I loved Spies and Lies! It's one of my favorite Nancy Drew & Hardy Boys books!
FBI thats the place where where ND & HB are undercover.......1998-08-24
This is an excellent book which happens to be the first one of the series which I read.It led to my reading each and every book of that series.Nancy Drew & Frank and Joe are undercover there.Nancy- hired by special agent Burr,to act as a bodyguard to Judy Noll but ends up solving the case as you guess.Frank & Joe-undercover too hired by the Network to solve the case of the watchdog which they do. The book's great. It's super thrilling all right. There's murder, there's suspence and everything a good book needs.Though it needs some romance

Monsters and Magnums, oh my!.......2003-12-12
I just discovered the Bureau 13 novels (there are only three of them) and they're fantastic! Laughed until my ribs hurt all the way through. Plus the heroes really have to pay for their victories, they get wounded and major characters die. But more importantly, the characters are a real team, each member gets their time to shine, and while each is a tough hombre, when working together as unit are they truly strong. Never seen that before in any novel and I loved it!
If the X-Files were investigated by the Addams Family..........2001-01-03
Hilarious. It has that perfect mix of fantasy, military factuality, and humor. Bureau 13 where you discover that the myths aren't and the monsters might be on your side.
More Please!.......2000-05-19
I just discovered the Bureau 13 novels (there are only three of them) and they're fantastic! Laughed until my ribs hurt all the way through. Plus the heroes really have to pay for their victories, they get wounded and major characters die. But more importantly, the characters are a real team, each member gets their time to shine, and while each is a tough hombre, when working together as unit are they truly strong. Never seen that before in any novel and I loved it! I found my copies in a used book store and was hoping to find new copies online. But no such luck. Hey, Mr. Pollotta, get back to work and write more of these right now!
It's out there.......2000-04-22
Taken entirely on its own merits this witty adventure novel deserves an extra star, but good as it is I cannot really say that it stacks up against the best works in print. As an example of gaming fiction, however, it could probably be a five star book. Richard Tucholka's schizophrenic role-playing game of modern horror, government agencies and high explosives is an uneven mix of childish humour, satire, action and scares; and to his great credit Nick Pollotta somehow managed to match the mood of the game perfectly and create an enjoyable romp in the process. The plot is linear, the characters cardboard and the laughs sporadic, but the whole is pulled off with such panache that it is impossible to avoid being swept along. Gamers love this book, perhaps because it reads exactly like a gaming session, but if you are coming to the world of Bureau 13 from more traditional horror and conspiracy fare then you may find that you're biting into a meringue: It's awfully sweet and fun, but lacking in substance and ultimately a wee bit less than you might have hoped for. But... if you see a copy at a fair price then you could certainly do worse.
Bureau 13 combines outrageous Sci-Fi with nonstop humor.......1999-06-02
I have read and re-read this book so many times that it is literally in tatters. I need a new copy, that's how good this book is! Truly an unsung classic, which leaves you salivating for more...Nick Pollotta does indeed give us more, with the books "Full Moonster", and "Alien Academy", both fantastic and worthy sequels, which follow storylines brilliantly! I had the DISTINCT PLEASURE of corresponding with the author himself, and I learned that Tri-Tac Books will be re-releasing the trilogy in March of 2000 if all goes well, but until then, I will continue my hunt for an original print copy! DON'T MISS THIS BOOK! ! !

Loved it !!!!.......2005-10-18
This one is a keeper. I've read it twice, and I'm holding on to it to read again someday.
This novel was my first exposure to the Bureau 13 books, and I went on to collected the others after reading it.
Many writers take a couple good ideas and reveal them slowly in a story. You're often left feeling short-shifted until you find that the writer was simply saving additional ideas to miserly hand out in future novels.
Not Nick. In this tail, he starts the concepts flowing and doesn't stop until the final page. He does this with the confidence that he'll simply come up with new ideas when he goes on to write future stories.
Bravo.
Can we say biased???.......2002-05-14
I enjoyed the first book and was surprised to see me in the next two (no, I'd never run the games with him). Definately a cousin of X-Files and MIB and would be a great movie. If you like his stuff, you should look for more under his other aliases: Nick Smith and Jack Hopkins (there are more, but even I can't keep track of them all
)
Personal favorite of mine.......2002-04-27
I'm a huge fan of gaming novels and this one series is at the top of my favorites list. If you ever wanted to read a novel of a great gaming session this series has that in spades. I, too, find this one even better than the first book (though the still out of print third book "Full Moonster" is my all time favorite). If you've read the Crimson Skies novels or the Dragonlance Chronicles than you know what I'm talking about. That sense of action and adventure you ususally only get by playing the damn game yourself.
Do yourself a favor and sit down and enjoy this fun read.
Even better than the first book!.......2001-08-09
Studying to become one of America's defenses against the paranormal, federal agents at the Bureau 13 Academy are thrown into the real world when a mysterious enemy lets loose every monster the Bureau ever had captured. And that was only to cover up the real crime...
Even Better Than the First book!.......2000-05-19
Wow. These just keep getting better and better. I really didn't think Mr. Pollotta could top the first book, BUREAU 13, but he did it in this one. The big fight at the secret jail was funny and exciting (yes, I did recognize most of the monsters used), and the vampire football team was the most hilarious thing I ever read. And the terrible events at the motel had my heart pounding. For Fantasy humor novels, these have some really scary scenes in them. With things like BLADE and X-FILES on the big screen, why haven't these wonderful books been made into movies yet? Any chance there is a Bureau 13 fan club out there on the web?

Book Description
In Overcoming Passive-Aggression, Dr. Tim Murphy and Loriann Hoff Oberlin provide an in-depth look at a topic we've all faced but haven't always recognized: Hidden anger. When people don't express their views and feel compelled to conceal their true beliefs and emotions, behaving in ways that don't match what they honestly think, there can be serious physical and psychological results for everyone involved. For the first time, Murphy and Oberlin offer a clear definition of passive-aggression and show readers not only how to end the behavior, but also how to avoid falling victim to other people's hidden anger. In clear, compassionate language, they cover everything from the childhood origins of the condition to the devastating effect it has on work and personal relationships to the latest research on the subject, and offer practical, proven strategies for the angry person as well as the individual who finds himself the target of someone else's passive-aggression.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for both anger hiders and those around them.......2007-07-07
One the best self-help books I've read. This book takes both the view of people who are passive-aggressive, referred to has hidden anger, and those around them affected by these behaviors. It has really helped me both understand how to be assertive with emotions and address hidden anger in others around me. The book's philosophy is "knowledge is power" rather than taking a prescription approach. Every reader can take this knowledge and apply it in their own lives, work setting, school and with children and other family members.
Very informative and practical.......2007-03-15
I bought this book thinking it would give me insights into one specific area, but it has informed so many different aspects of my life. There is not a lot of filler, and I found every chapter to be informative and worth reading. The title is accurately descriptive. It includes practical information that applies to all different kinds of personal and professional relationships. It was a real eye opener in terms of understanding certain behaviors and the various ways anger may manifest or be transferred. It also has great advice on how to recognize when hidden anger is being manifested and how to minimize its impact on yourself. My husband is reading it now, and said he will probably re-read it. I agree that this is that kind of book--one I will turn to again and again in the future.
Easy to read, grounded in good science.......2007-02-08
Highly readable and helpful book on hidden anger. The authors provide helpful methods for dealing with sneaky anger in different settings from work, school, and for couples, parents and employers. I particularly enjoyed the description of four types of angry families, "The troubled family where anger is the voice of pain, the frantic family where anger is the voice of stress, the angry family where anger is the voice of power, the indulging family where anger is the voice of desire." Readers can recognize their own hidden anger, as well as that of others, and learn to react in ways that produce better relationships. The authors do a good job demonstrating the destructiveness of passive-aggressive behavior. I found the chapter "Rewriting Your Own Anger Script" helpful for clients who find it difficult to communicate feelings with others. Readers learn to identify their own feelings and needs, communicate effectively, while taking care of the anxiety this can foster.
Clear and concise.......2007-02-03
As a psychotherapist, I am always interested in self-help books that might be valuable to myself and my clients. This book, along with Scott Wexzler's book, "Living with the Passive-Agressive Man," are the two books I continually recommend to those people who feel angry and "crazy" in relationships and yet don't quite understand what is going on. This book is especially valuable because not only does the author define passive-aggressive behavior, he gives concrete ideas of how to constructively recognize and address it. Also, he provides a realistic assessment of the effects p/a has on a relationship and the difficulty one will have in recognizing and disengaging from this anger. Well written and easy to follow, this book is a valuable asset to anyone caught up in the tentacles of passive aggressive, or hidden, anger.
From anger to happiness.......2006-03-20
More than an exploration of anger, this book is a prescription for overcoming hidden aggression and finding lasting happiness. Lots of references to helpful resources about how to help couples deal with conflict in relationships.

Must Have for Baking.......2006-08-10
I bought this book because I was just the average cook searching for a cookbook that would tell me what to do exactly and why. I learned so much from this book and now I consider myself a good baker. My family and friends and people I don't know want me to make them deserts. I consider this to be a great accomplishment and exactly what I was looking for. If you want to be a good baker buy this book you won't be disappointed and you will learn the proper way to do it. The baking911.com site is fantastic and if you want to know more ask Sarah. I've never met this woman, I consider her to be a good friend and a fantastic chef. She has done alot for all of us who are learning and explains it in layman terms. She even has a online school at baking911.com and I have taken the classes. A major plus. I believe this is the best cookbook I own and I have more than 50 and at the best price. You will find many pictures and more recipes at the web site. Baking Friend Mystie Richards Florida

I do a lot of baking and I'm always looking for a book that really nails what baking is all about. THIS IS THE BOOK! If you are also looking for such a book, look no further.
Big disappointment.......2006-07-09
I bought this book because of the great reviews and I am very disappointed with it. I was particularly interested in the Pastry and Yeast Breads sections: I was expecting a lot of good tips and a few basic recipes. In the pastry section the author gives general descriptions of pastry types, choux, puff pastry and phyllo dough, information easily available on the internet, and offers only one recipe for Pear Baklava. The bread section is even worse: nothing new in the description of the breads and 2 recipes for white sandwich bread and whole grain wheat bread. She forgot all the other kinds, from french to focaccia or pizza. I am sorry to say that I found this book useless and highly overrated. Not recommended.
That should read FIVE stars - sorry!.......2006-03-25
Okay, so I am getting older. But I do try to follow cake recipes TO THE LETTER because I believe that baking is truly chemistry. "Chocolate Frosted Fudge Layer Cake," the recipe, Step 2: "...combine flour and salt and set aside." Right. Did it. Followed the rest of the steps to the letter, or I think I did....the author said the batter would be thin...wow, was it ever! Popped the pans into the oven only to find the FLOUR AND SALT MIXTURE STILL SET ASIDE on my countertop...i.e., NOT in the cake! Obviously there was an error in the recipe in the book - one I should have spotted beforehand, maybe, but didn't.
I whisked the pans out of the oven, dumped the batter back into the mixing bowl, threw the flour mixture in and beat it as quickly as I could; threw it back in the pans and into the oven. Fortunately, despite my haphazard efforts, the cake rose beautifully and tasted great in the end.
This printing snag had been duly noted on Sarah Phillips' excellent website, addressed and rectified...unfortunately, I did not see it until after the fact.
I originally gave this book 3 out of 5 stars because of this...not the author's fault, but I felt I was reviewing the BOOK, not its author - and the book had a few problems. Like too many cookbooks, I have found, a few inaccuracies or omissions by the publishers can make a big difference...and it happens to the best of them. It's too bad we can't rate the accuracy of a cookbook's editing separately from the book as a whole...
...Now, in editing my original review, I wish I could add two more stars to the three that I gave it and make it five. The more I consider this book, I must say that without a doubt - publishing error(s) and all - it is still one I wouldn't want to be without in my kitchen...its baking tips, techniques and explanations are excellent. And, like Sarah Phillips' labour-of-love website by the same name, it is comprehensive and very easy to reference.
And speaking of the website (though this is a book review), it expands on this book very nicely...several times I have referred to it for advice ranging from proving yeast breads to storing a fondant-iced cake and the answers were really helpful and easy to access. Plus that is where you will find the corrections for the cake recipe that almost went wrong :-)
I don't know how many reviewers edit their reviews like this, but in the interests of fairness (and the pangs of guilt I will feel every time I reach for this book and/or go to the Baking911.com site) I am doing so. FIVE STARS and an apology.
