Kevin Kerney might just be the best cop currently working the mean streets of mystery fiction. As deputy chief of the New Mexico State Police, he is not tortured by the doubts, angst, alcoholism, or mixed motives that seem to overwhelm many of his fictional colleagues. His methods are rarely flashy or excessively macho, and he treats other cops of all ranks with a minimum of attitude. Author Michael McGarrity, who worked for Santa Fe's sheriff's department before retiring to write, has managed to make Kerney human without loading him with excess baggage.
As we've come to realize in three previous books--Mexican Hat, Serpent Gate, and Tularosa--Kerney works as a police officer to make the money he needs to buy a cattle ranch like the one he grew up on. In Hermit's Peak, that dream comes closer to reality when a woman painter leaves Kerney a large portion of her own property on a mesa northeast of Santa Fe. McGarrity describes this land with the keen simplicity of natural poetry. Reality (in the form of a huge inheritance tax bill) darkens the picture. But the discovery of a very rare cactus plant and the unexpected arrival of Sara Brannon (the career army officer with whom Kerney had a romance in an earlier book) let in a few rays of sunlight. Meanwhile, Kerney and a tough local cop have to deal with a rape and murder, plus enough everyday crimes to keep them seriously busy without busting the boundaries of believability. --Dick Adler
Book Description
When Kevin Kerney, deputy chief of the New Mexico State Police, inherits an unexpected windfall of 6,400 acres of high-county land, the last thing he wants to think about is work. But while visiting his new property, he comes across an ailing stray dog that leads him to the butchered bones of a murder victim near the rugged mountain of Hermit's Peak.
After assigning the case to his subordinates, Kerney returns to Santa Fe to spend time with a woman he cares about, Sara Brannon, a career army officer who is visiting him on holiday. But his time with Sara must wait, as he is called back to Hermit's Peak when another body is found at a remote cabin. Now, Kerney must unearth the shattering truth about his new land and follow a twisting trail of blood through the majestic landscape of the American Southwest.

Just fine.......2007-03-10
I've just started reading McGarrity and really like him.
Pros.
1) He is a good writer, his books flow naturally and they are easy to read. (Not all best selling authors are good writers.)
2) His characters are likeable, fully fleshed and well written.
3) He's done more for New Mexico than any NM tourist commission could ever do. Before I read his books I thought NM was a desert both in geography and culturally. Now I see that NM has beauty in more ways than one.
Cons.
1) These books are not thrillers. You don't have to guess who did it because he tells you. They are more like dramas where you get to see both sides. I would have given the book a 5 if he had let us discover the nature of the crime with Kerney, but that's it's the same with all his books.
Nevertheless, very satisfying to read. I plan to get all his books.
Good read -.......2007-01-12
Firstly, I love the setting for these books. It's New Mexico off the beaten path (with occasional side trips to Albuquerque and Santa Fe), a part of the country I'm familiar with. It's very evocative of the area. And the mysteries are engaging, and pretty well written, too. Characters are drawn well, story moves along, dialog is good - what's not too like. I've read four of this series and liked them all.
a good story again........2006-05-27
i was quite sad about the lieut. lost his son in the end. kerney kept shinning thru the whole story. a man with priciples and plenty chips to deal with the harshness of the new mexico environment. his ranching dream seems to become tougher and more difficult to be realized. never thought ranching business would be so difficult today in america and that really sucks.
KERNEY CONTINUES TO COOK.......2004-04-16
Kevin Kerney, McGarrity's tough, sensitive cop, is back in a labyrinthine tale set once again in the wilds of New Mexico. Kerney has inherited land from a schoolmate of his late mother's, and he is ecstatic, even though he may not be able to pay the inheritance tax on it. While looking at his new land, he and his friend Dale Jennings, discover the bones of a female, and it looks like homicide. If that weren't enough, a local citizen, Carl Boaz, is found with a bullet in his forehead on a cabin on Kerney's property. These two crimes propel Kerney and his associates into a maelstrom of rape, murder, and burglary. And, Sara Brannon, Kerney's love from a previous book, returns to add romantic complications to his life. A side plot involves a fellow cop's plight with his son and the son's notoriously bad friend.
Again, the dialogue and settings are rich and authentic, and Kerney plows ahead in this excellent series.
excellent writing and plotting.......2004-02-02
I read a lot of mysteries and this is one of the best plotted, best written ones I've ever read. In my opinion, Michael McGarrity is one gifted writer.

Til We meet again at Greenwood.......2005-11-16
A sweet, funny, and subtly profound story. 15 year old Kazuya Hasukawa is frustrated with his life beacuse his older brother(since their parents died when he was very young in an accident) Kazuhiro married Sumire, his first love. Not only did he marry her, he's taking her home to live with him! So Hasukawa moves into Ryokurin-Ryu-- a dorm that is a haven for weirdoes (and just so happens to be where Kazuhiro went to school). When he first went to check out the school, he got in an accident and his stomach was perforated (he had an ulcer). While in the hospital, he missed his first day of school, and got paired up with the least likely person in the entire dorm to be his roomate. This person is Shun Kisaragi, a very...interesting looking guy (who may still not prove to be a guy at all). THis book is funny, but some parts don't make too mush sense. great art, original story, fun characters. A good shojo read.
greenwood!.......2004-12-05
Here is greenwood is about a boy who moves into an all boys dorm (called Greenwood) because his older brother married the woman he is in love with. Once he has moved in he discovers that the inhabitants of the dorm are... odd.
Here is Greenwood was good, but slightly confusing at parts. I really enjoyed it! If you like manga you'll probably like this.

Why don't more people know about this?.......2007-06-09
This book has a ton of great insights about disease prevention. Doctors rarely, if ever, provide information on prevention because prevention is not profitable for either hospitals or big pharma. If everybody took a little more time to understand how their bodies work, we'd have a lot less disease in our society. Prevention is the key to good health and you truly are what you eat. We can't expect to fill our bodies with garbage and expect good results.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to live a vital, disease-free life. Read the book and buy a copy for someone you love. Don't rely on doctors to keep you healthy. You can only rely on yourself.
I also highly recommend The Coconut Miracle. If you do nothing else, please introduce coconut oil into your diet and you will see amazing results.
Do yourself a favor, get this book........2007-05-05
I have been fasting/detoxing for many years. It is a passion of mine, and I don't have many interests in my life that I consider passions. Fasting/detoxing, some have claimed, is a gift you give yourself. I truly agree with this proclaimation.
Of all the material I have read about detoxing...this is the most insightful, through, and overall, best source.
This book is not full of religious quotes like a lot of detox/fasting books, although Fife does mention that many religions believe in fasting for clarity and health. This is a more scientific approach.
There are a lot of pictures, the columns are set up in a fast-paced reading style, and the stories and inspiring.
Great beginners and intermediate Detox Book.......2007-04-24
This was my first detox book (I gave read several now) and by far this has been the best. The book is broken in to sections that are easy to follow and read. This is the main book that I refer to when I'm detoxing for tips and suggestions. Another good book is "Healing Celebrations" by Leonard G. Horowitz.
Good Body Cleansing Information............2007-04-14
This book was very helpful during my first body cleanse.
I especially liked the chapter on the healing crisis
you go through while cleansing. It reassured me that
my skin breaking out, ect...were all a normal part
of your body releasing toxins. I found this book to
be an easy read with alot of interesting information.
It is a great guide on how to get healthy and delay
the ageing process.
Bruce Fife's program will teach you how to rest and restore your body's natural detoxification abilities........2006-08-16
Functional medicine is ideal medicine made real; it is a new medical model--a more successful way of treating human illness and disease--born of recent technological and clinical advances applied in a fresh methodology. Through Detox, a term that covers regimens for ridding the body of toxic substances. These toxins can be ingested or inhaled: Pesticides, heavy metals, alcohol, cigarette smoke and dry-cleaning and other chemicals. Or internally produced: Hormonal by-products, cellular waste; if not ousted, they can impair immunity and lead to fatigue, mental fogginess, skin problems, neurological ailments or heart disease. Bruce Fife's book, The Detox Book: How to Detoxify Your Body to Improve Your Health, Stop Disease, and Reverse Aging, 2nd Edition contains all the information you need to complete your detoxification program at home. Our body's natural detoxification system is designed to support our health by eliminating waste products from our metabolism and from environmental toxins. Like any other hardworking system, it needs periodic rest and support to continue functioning optimally. Bruce Fife's program will teach you how to rest and restore your body's natural detoxification abilities.

If it's good enough for the De' Medicis.............2007-03-13
I received this book as a gift when the Frances Mayes Tuscany book (ugh!)was all rage. I flipped through it thinking "what a dumb format for a coobook" then slipped it into a bookshelf where it lay buried for a couple of years. I did however remember seeing in it (& liking the idea of) a recipe for "Elder Flower Flat Bread" (p.34) and I had an elderberry shrub in bloom so I dragged the book out, plucked the 1/2 cup of elderflowers and made the bread. It was good. I started actually looking at the photographs and then read through it. I kinda liked it. Then, to go on an antipasti (as Lorenza suggested) I made the "Stuffed Eggs with Tarragon" (p.35). Big hit! I tried, like an earlier reviewer, the "Chickpea Flat Bread"(p.45) Big-gloppy -mess- disaster! But, Lorenza had my attention with her great commentary on the culinary regions of Tuscany and the food styling is so irresistable and appetizing I forged on. Also VERY LOVING photographs of Tuscany. I've tried: "Naked Ravioli" (p78) Great! "Meatloaf of Arrezzo"(p.148 ) Nice suprise. "Fennel Cake" (p.242) Indispensible, I bake one a week! Light Apple Cake (p. 246) Delicious! So, long story short I really enjoy this book. The format is very large, rather absurd for the kitchen but I just slap it down on the counter, keep it open with a marble pestle and happily cook away.
Nice Gift Book.......2007-01-16
A large, attractive book that I gave as a gift. Nice pictures of the food and the recipes looked interesting and not too difficult.
Best In Many Ways.......2007-01-06
I received this book as a gift a few years ago and have used it often. The recipe's are imaginative, easy and always well recieved by family and guests. The recipe's ingredients are basic and credible. And of course, the presentation in this book is a knockout! The food, the scenery, the dishware. All top drawer.
Ah, Tuscany!.......2006-09-27
This is a book that lives up to its name in all respects. The color photos (250) are warmly, rustically lit. These carefully composed still lifes entice the earthier senses with taste and aroma and give the reader a yen for this beautiful region.
And the recipes, arranged by course, highlight regional dishes from the simple -- Chicken in Red Wine, Chestnut and Rice Soup to the unusual -- Salt Cod and Mint Soup, Spaghetti with Sea Urchin Sauce to the sublime -- Snails with Sausage and Tomato Sauce, Pheasant Broth, Ricotta Tart.
for the coffee table, not the kitchen.......2006-01-10
I got this as a gift from my son, since I had just visited Tuscany last year and loved the food. I am an experienced gourmet cook. This book needed a test kitchen in the worst way. I tried two recipes: one for polenta (as basic as pasta) and a Garbanzo bean bread. The proportions for both were totally wrong. The polenta balled up in the pan, and the "flat bread" was like a soft egg dish. I checked in one of my favorite chef cookbooks (Sheila Lukins of Silver Palate fame) and the proportions were very different for the polenta. the other recipe couldn't find anywhere. I'm donating this one to the library for the Friends of the Library sale.

Provence is loved for its sunlit beauty and earthy, tantalizing cuisine. Both are celebrated in Provence the Beautiful Cookbook, an oversized (more than two feet tall!) picture and cookbook of breathtaking color photos and authentic regional recipes. The 270 recipes, compiled and written by award-winning food book author Richard Olney, include soups and starters; seafood, meat, game, and poultry dishes; vegetable and grain specialties; and simple but luscious desserts. Readers seeking an armchair tour of the region, singularly depicted, and the chance to see and reproduce its dishes, will delight in the book, which would also make a welcome gift.
Beginning with an introduction to the land and its cooking, the book then weaves short essays about the Provençal regions with recipes arranged by courses. There are exemplary versions of bouillabaisse and bourride (the creamy, garlic-infused fish chowder), estouffade (braised beef, here with olives and mushrooms), daubs (stews), vegetable-filled omelets, and tians (savory gratins). Less familiar treasures include a mixed herb pasta from Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, porgy with crab sauce from the Var, a braised stuffed lamb shoulder from Vaucluse, zucchini and rice gratin from the Alpes Maritimes, and dried figs in thyme and red wine syrup, also from the Var. The recipes reflect Olney's unerring palate and dedication to tradition; some cooks may find certain dishes beyond their reach, but all will discover approachable recipes that are easily made. Wine information and a glossary conclude the portrait of Provence and its table--a feast for the eye and palate alike. --Arthur Boehm

Very nice.......2007-06-24
Having spent quite a bit of time in Provence I love to grab this book and go back there, remembering all the times and meals. Creating dishes from this book really helps me to enjoy Provence all over again.
Excellent.......2006-04-28
"Provence, The Beautiful Cookbook" by Richard Olney is a beautiful coffee table book filled with exquisite views and mouth-watering authentic dishes from this region of France.
Every time I look through this book, I feel like I am on an actual journey to Provence. And each time, I close this book, I feel a strong yearning to actually see this part of France with my own eyes!
This book is divided into food chapters, like most cookbooks, but also, there are chapters about different areas within this region: Alpes-Maritimes; Soups and Starters; Alpes-de-Haute-Provence; Fish and Shellfish; Vaucluse; Meat, Poultry and Gram; Bouches-du-Rhone; Vegetables and Grains; Var; and Desserts.
A wonderful book for lovers of Provence!
Good intro to Provencal cooking.......2001-11-27
I like this book, but it does point out one weakness in Provencal cooking...a slight lack of variety. There are multiple gratin recipes, good fish dishes, etc. It also doesn't shy away from organ meats, etc., much like the region itself. Like all the books in this visually stunning series, this one has lovely photography.
BIG AND BEAUTIFUL.......2000-07-22
I was a little suspicious of the series. After all, should we trust a book more suitably sized for the coffee table than for the kitchen counter? But my mistrust was misguided. The food is wonderful. All people have assumptions about "others," and one of the assumptions Americans make about the French is that their food is very difficult to prepare and relies on expensive ingredients. The truth is that French food need not be difficult and that it is a cuisine that recognizes the beauty of each season. Since my children bought this book for me, we have been building seasonal rituals around it. For example, we get salt anchovies from the neighborhood Italian deli for our Christmas eve appetizer. At Mardi Gras, we make the oreilles found in this book, which are the pastries sold as "pig's ears" or "angel wings" in the last days before Lent by Polish bakeries in Detroit. Depending on the bakery, they were known as "pig's ears" or "angels wings." My only criticism of the book is that I feel the need to keep it open in the dining room, lest kitchen grease spoils it.
Oh la la!.......2000-06-23
French born and 4th generation provençale, I take pride in the cuisine from my homeland and I have to confess I was a little wary about what I would find in this book. Well, the authors did a wonderful job at promoting the gastronomic traditions of Provence without betraying them. My grand-mother, our family's head-cook, and our culinary inspiration would have given her seal of approval without hesitation, would she have been around to discover this wonderful recipe collection and it is with her and my homeland in mind that I enjoy preparing the recipes featured in this excellent collection for my own enjoyment and the one of my (American) husband and our friends.
Book Description
A bounty of more than 240 recipes from the regions of France reveal the rich and varied produce of the world'srenowned center of gastronomy. France the Beautiful Cookbook gives a rare insight into the less -publicized side of French cooking: a cuisine which has been passed down through families by word or mouth. This home cuisine, so rich in history and tradition -- and so delicious - simmers and bubbles on family stoves and in country inns throughout each region.
France the Beautiful Cookbook takes the reader from the countryside to the table. It explains the vital link between each region's history , geography and culina traditions, story, people who make the food so unique. Without the abundance of oysters, withoutcassoulet withouthochepot, without the bourride without the wines and beers that go with them, France would not be France.
Specially commissioned photographs graphically convey the diversity and beauty of France's terrain: the craggy hills of the south, the coastal fishing villages along the western coast, the lush pastures of the Loire, the colorful Mediterranean, and the alpine regions and volcanic plateaus of the center.
The recipes are recorded in this beautiful book by the Scotto Sisters - food writers Marianne Comolli, Elisabeth Scotto and Michéle Carles -- who grew up in Paris, spending the summers of their childhood in the French countryside. Each Cookbook is the story of an ancient treasure trove of French regional gastronony eloquently narrated by Author Pludlowski and superbly captured in color by photographers Pierre Hussenot and Leo Meier.
Customer Reviews:
Tastes Authentic!.......2007-06-22
Instead of purchasing this book here, I recommend looking for it in stores like Waldenbooks or Barnes and Noble in their section of books on sale. These stores always have a section of huge books that have been marked down to very reasonable prices.
This book isn't particularly huge, but it is legitimate in its recipes. I have tried several recipes from this book and they've all come out wonderful and comparable to the "real deals" that I've tasted over in France myself. There was no need to alter any of the ingredients or amounts, as so far I've had no failures/disasters in cooking from this book. It is divided up into sections (poultry, fish, desserts, etc.) and each section opens first to an introduction to a region of France with a little bit of background. The book provides pictures for almost every recipe they list, which I know can be helpful to some readers/cooks to know what it is they're cooking.
I would say, though, that some of the recipes might require you to be a little adventurous, as of course these authentic recipes require foods that Americans do not normally eat very often (like lamb and rabbit, for example). But I've found that other than that, the ingredients were not so exotic that I couldn't find them in the store and was forced to make adjustments.
Love it.......2007-01-03
I love this book! Great recipes and information about the country. Glossary is extremely useful.
Armchair: 5. Recipes: 4........2006-01-12
I got this book on a closeout at my local bookstore, and at that low price the book is wonderful. I'd be a little less thrilled if I paid full-price... but only a little.
I would guess that most "...The Beautiful" books are probably purchased for their coffee table appeal. This is a large format book (12"x18"), with stunning photos of different areas of France and of the food (there's generally one picture of the finished dish for every two recipes). If you want a book to inspire you to travel to France or to go out to eat at a French restaurant, or if you are searching for an impressive and pretty gift, this is a no-brainer. It's gorgeous.
The recipes are very good, too, but I'm tempted to say that they're almost beside the point. There are 240 recipes, divided in menu-like sections (first courses, fish and shellfish, poultry and game, etc.) rather than regionaly. Each recipe is marked with the region it comes from, so you know that the mussels in cream is from Normandy and the veal rolls (paupiettes) are from Provence. There's also a couple of pages, with photos, describing each region. Nicely done.
I'm not knowledgeable enough about French cooking to speak to the authenticity of the recipes, but none of them were jarring. Most of the dishes are kept on the simple side (I get the feeling that the "real" version might require a few more hours in the kitchen), and they do have interesting, if short, introductions. The intro for cassoulet, for instance, gives a little history of this well-known dish, and mentions regional variations ("Toulouse adds Toulouse sausage, leg of lamb and confit"). You'll find the usual suspects of French cuisine; 240 dishes is a bunch, but far from exhaustive.
Most of the recipes are, as I said, very good. Their recipe for sole meuniere matches the one I use, and I have my eye on their recipe for beef braised with Calvados.
However, the book does show that it was written in 1989, when it was difficult to find some "exotic" ingredients. The recipe for chaoucroute (saurkraut with pork and sausage) calls for, among other things, a smoked kielbasa, and 6 Strasbourg sausages or frankfurters. David Rosengarten's _Taste_ has a whole chapter devoted to charcoute (which led me to spend my sole evening in Paris at a restaurant for which it's the specialty -- maybe I'll send him the bill), and it's obvious that these are gringo subsitutions. Kielbasa, maybe; frankfurters, no way. (Oddly, though, they don't shy away from dishes made with venison or rabbit, which I find much harder to find.)
As someone else mentioned, the desserts chapter feels short; there's about 20 recipes here, and I think most of us would assume that the French pastry section would be far larger.
Overall, this is a fine book -- particularly for inspiration purposes. If you can get it at a good price, grab it.
Beautiful and Easy.......2005-10-23
This book is really packed and pretty. The pictures are great, but I think it could have included more desserts.
The Best Cookbook Ever.......2002-12-17
This is easily the greatest French cookbook I've ever seen and one of the best cookbooks overall. I've been to France many times and the same food is in this cookbook as is in France. The recipes are easy to understand, the food is great, and the photographs just make you more and more hungry. I am a 16 year old boy who has a hard time cooking and filling myself, but this cookbook remedies both of these problems. The meals are simple, yet elegant, not to mention delicious, filling, and scrumptious. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys cooking and would like cooking to become a passion.
