Book Description
At a Hallowe'en party, Hercule Poirot aids mystery writer Ariadne Oliver in an investigation into the murder of a young girl-who may have witnessed a murder herself. But unmasking the killer proves more daunting than bobbing for apples.
Download Description
E-book exclusive extras: Christie biographer Charles Osborne's essay on Hallowe'en Party; "The Poirots": the complete guide to all the cases of the great Belgian detective.
Mystery writer Ariadne Oliver has been invited to a Hallowe'en party at Woodleigh Common. One of the other guests is an adolescent girl known for telling tall tales of murder and intrigue -- and for being generally unpleasant. But when the girl, Joyce, is found drowned in an apple-bobbing tub, Mrs Oliver wonders after the fictional nature of the girl's claim that she had once witnessed a murder. Which of the party guests wanted to keep her quiet is a question for Ariadne's friend Hercule Poirot. But unmasking a killer this Hallowe'en is not going to be easy -- for there isn't a soul in Woodleigh who believes the late little storyteller was actually murdered.

Not Her Best, But Still Very Good.......2007-10-04
During preparations for a Halloween party a girl announces she had seen a murder several years earlier. At the time nobody believes her, but when she is murdered that evening, some people begin to suspect she was telling the truth. Enter Hercule Poirot. Let the detection begin!
Poirot is in top form: listening to everyone, asking what seem to be totally irrevelevant questions, and slowly putting all the pieces of the puzzle together -- classical Agatha Christie.
The plot is very good; the characters excellent; atmosphere great; the humor is present but toned down which seems fitting for a story about a murdered child. As always, Miss Christie provides enough clues for the reader to solve the mystery; so this is definitely a 'fair play' book.
On the negative side: the pace is overly slow, the writing not as sharp as Christie at her best, and the motive for the crimes not very satisfactory.
The past is the father of the present.......2007-08-26
I love reading mysteries because they really made my brain tick. They deliver more than a mindless hobby, which reading can sometimes be and really gear me up and make me alert for clues, suspects and provide with great satisfaction when I find myself on the right track. Having said that, Agatha Christie and her charming books fit that hunger to a tee, I find their slightly old fashioned approach so charming and alluring that I always finding myself craving them. She is still my favorite mystery author even though I have hundreds of other books, mostly those leisurely silly cozy mysteries that are cute but nowhere near as intricate as a Hercule Poirot mystery.
This tale was different than most Hercule Poirot books I read. For starters the story begins with a death of a child, not something I am accustomed to reading, and creepy, depressing as it may be it was a hooking point for the real mystery that seemed to have spanned years back. When a children's Halloween party is disturbed by Joyce, who was found drowned in a tub full of water and apples that were there for apple bobbing, everyone dismisses her previous claims of witnessing a murder as another one of her lies. The trouble was that the girl was known for making things up but did she lie this time or was there truth to what she said? Her corpse was proving one point while logic and clues around it were not making any sense. Poirot decides to investigate any unusual incidents that happened approximately at the time of Joyce's story and tries to connect the past with the present making for a very interesting read.
I liked the story but it was hard to follow a few times, the past was far behind yet it was being dug up and spat back at me. So I advise the reader to follow right along, pay attention and when the ending comes together to go over the whole thing in their mind, it will make sense! Overall this was a great read but it made me think more that other Poirot books, of course the answers were right there but I was often mislead by Christie's many red herrings. The murderer was evasive and I was surprised to discover who it was but it made for a great read.

Sliding Down the Slippery Slope - Potential Spoilers.......2007-01-18
The copyright for Hallowe'en Party is 1969, when Christie's writing skills were clearly in decline. That's not to say that this book doesn't have some enjoyable bits; it does. One of Christie's great skills is to come up with an intriguing, or at least an interesting, premise. In this book she still manages to do this. A child during the preparation for a Hallowe'en party boasts of having seen a murder when she was "very young" without having realized that it was a murder; the child is murdered later that evening, during the party itself. And this sets the book into action.
Although the premise is interesting - and although the occasional lovely scene does still occur - the book is inadequate. The psychology that is so tight and so convincing in so many other of her books (Five Little Pigs or Cards on the Table) is simply not here. And the tightness of the plotting is absent as well. In fact, after reading it carefully - going back and looking again - I could not understand why the child was killed at all. Given what all the characters said, it did not quite hang together - although I admit that the motivation behind the murder was interesting.
Still, if you want to spend some time with Ariadne Oliver (who in this book loses her taste for apples) and Hercule Poirot (who insists in walking around the country in patent leather shoes, no matter how much his feet hurt) this book is harmless.
Well thought out mystery (4.5 stars).......2006-02-10
One of the later Hercule Poirot novels, this book is deftly written and keeps you guessing until the end. Everytime I thought I had it figured out something popped up that made me question my conclusions.
This book has all of Agatha Christie's usual flair for plotting out a plausible solution to a seemingly unsolvable crime. In a few places the narrative seemed a little drawn out, but this was more than made up for by an exciting ending and Christie's excellently descriptive writting.
Highly recommended for fans of Agatha Chritie and mystery novels in general.
The Plot for Murder.......2006-01-04
Even though "Hallowe'en Party" was written later in Agatha Christie's career, and some might believe it to be somewhat of a letdown from earlier works, it retains all the trademarks of what make Christie's intricately woven, delightfully detected mysteries so endearing and timeless. With Hercule Poirot serving as the sleuth who steps in to solve the murder, "Hallowe'en Party" is quick-paced and filled with a cast of characters who seemingly all have something to gain, or hide.
When a young teen is found murdered at a Halloween party, Hercule Poirot is called in by a visiting mystery writer. She is troubled by something that the girl had said during preparations for the party. The young victim claims to have seen a murder committed, and Poirot is quick to believe that she was murdered in order for that murder to remain unknown. He soon sets himself to the task of interviewing a wide cast of the town's inhabitants, raising questions about not only present events, but those in the past that just might be connected to the tragedy. When another murder hits too close to home, Poirot knows that he must convince the lawmen in charge that he has fitted the puzzle together correctly.
"Hallowe'en Party" is plotted out to perfection; the solution, and the requisite explanatory chapter in which Poirot explains how he solved the crime at hand, is as ingenious as it is 'right before your eyes' if the reader is paying close attention to the clues. As always, Agatha Christie has fashioned a delectable mystery that has remained timeless in its plot (even if some of the language, and fashions mentioned for that matter, are a bit dated).

Not Colonel Mustard did it in the library with a candlestick.......2007-05-03
This books seem to be failed James Bond type spy mystery with neonazis.
Even the romance is bollixed between the two central upper class English types.
The young Siegfried is a Wagnerian operatic leitmotif that forms a central
plot element. Even the secret weapon is nothing deadly...
She seems to have completely misunderstood the youth movements of the 1960's.
Hm. Not what I was expecting........2007-01-25
I was searching for some literary comfort food, and picked this book off of my "to be read" shelf. I thought that I had read most of the Christie novels, but picked this up when I could not for the life of me remember having read it. It was, sadly, not comforting. As you have no doubt figured out if you have read the various reviews of this book, it is by no means a typical Agatha Christie.
Instead of small, character-focused, and closely examined Passenger to Frankfurt is big and surreal and (let's be honest) kind of bombastic. Featured aspects are a worldwide youth conspiracy, the return of the dangerous Germans, and a very unlikely spy thriller.
I can imagine that Christie had a lot of fun writing this novel, and far be it from me to begrudge her that fun. Actually, the best part about the book for the reader is the introduction, and in the introduction you get the sense of what drove her to write something like this. The book isn't awful, really, it just isn't great-- and I am used to pretty much everything she writes being great.
Passenger to Frankfurt is an interesting little oddity for the Christie fan, but probably something to skip if you are just looking for a Christie mystery. At least Christie isn't as bad as Ngaio Marsh at writing about youth culture of the 1960s/70s, so at least that's some blessing.
An old lady's extravaganza.......2006-03-23
Why do so many people hate this book? Probably because, having been spoiled for decades by the Queen of Crime, they narrow-mindedly refuse to indulge an old Lady and grant her the little pleasure of what she herself called 'an extravaganza', a 'story that is in essence a fantasy and pretends to be nothing more'. Cut her some slack, will you?
One must acknowledge that witnessing the growing unrest in the world, violence, anarchy and plane-hijackings gave the 80-year-old author ideas and a certain fear of upheaval of the world order, which resulted in her sitting down and bringing this story to paper. That the villain is German is understandable I guess, having lived through two world wars, Mrs. Christie was certainly entitled to prejudice. I like the characters in the book and the places in which the story unfolds, especially when imagined as in an early 70's movie. As for the plot of a sinister organisation plotting to dominate the world, is it really implausible? Let me quote again from the books introduction, where it says that 'most things that happen (in the book) are happening, or giving promise of happening in the world of today. It is not an impossible story - it is only a fantastic one.' In writing this story Agahtha Christie held up a mirror to what she saw and thought the world had become or was in danger of becoming , and when you think about it, times have changed, but the world has not - at least not for the better. This story is timeless.
what a mess.......2004-08-06
First off, let me say that i am a huge and dedicated fan of the great Dame Agatha Chrisite. I have read almost all her books, and i think she is the greatest mystery writer ever.
However, this rather fantastical effort is a departure from her usual murder mysteries into the murky world of espionage and the discovery of an anarchistic conspiracy run by neo-Nazis. The net effect is an amateurish and boring plot burdened by superfluous characters and a lack of exposition.
The main character seems to be likable Sir Stafford Nye, who is actually quite an interesting persona, until he is inexplicably dumped halfway through the book in favour of a fly-on-the-wall observation of various Cabinet meetings that are essentially redundant in telling the reader that the danger faced is very serious and mysterious. There are also long, abstract and irrelevant dialogues between mono-dimensional characters that make Agatha Christie seem at sea with a genre that is apparently too big for her.
When the mastermind behind the conspiracy is uncovered, we see a brief flash of the old Christie, as the culprit is someone whom the reader never suspects. However, the epilogue, instead of explaining the culprit's motives or the fates of the various conspirators is instead a humorous yet unsatisfactory marriage between Sir Stafford and another character.
Several times during the narrative, I found the courage and fortitude to continue only by telling myself that the ending would be as brilliant and fulfilling as all her previous novels, yet once again, I was thoroughly disappointed with this sad excuse for a novel
Not a Thriller.......2004-06-13
I agree with those reviewers that believe that this is not Agathat's best work, far from it. Her foray is mystery and this books attempts to be a thriller, which doesn't work at all. I cannot say that the writing is bad but this entire book is just not interesting. Her other books that have to do with world organizations are much better although also couldn't be compared to her regular setting of a family murder. So much of the plot just doesn't make sense and apart from the three main characters everyone else remain hazy, which is never the case in any of her other books. I have the entire collection and must say that this is her most unsuccessful literary attempt.

Excellent prequel.......2004-06-04
"The Forging of the Dragon" explains why Vicia-Heinox came to be -- and is an excellent prequel to the three books Hughes wrote earlier about the One Land (and its various "fragments").
If you read "The Prophet of Lamath" or "The Power and the Prophet" or "The Wizard in Waiting," you're sure to like this book, as the few flaws in those books (mostly dealing with how Hughes dealt with his minor characters) have been rectified.
It's not a really highbrow book, by any means, but there is a solid moral and ethical basis that makes this book truly engaging.
Only authors I can think of that might be like Hughes are the current team of LaHaye and Jenkins -- but this is far less heavy-handed and far more lyrical to read.
Five stars. Highly recommended.
Barb Caffrey
Why doesn't Hughes get more credit?.......2003-12-09
Like the Pelewan series, this series is absolutely stellar. A little light, but you won't find a better told story than this series. Isn't that what is all about? If you like Lawrence Watt Evans, you'll love Hughes fantasy books. Just fantastic stories with believable and real characters.

Perfect workout/Buy this book now.......2007-10-11
My personal experience has been one of complete satisfaction. I do the stretching and chest workout (which includes Furey squats)every morning I can. Takes about 15 minutes and I do it in my kitchen or living room. No driving to a gym, no special equipment, waiting for gym rats to get off of a machine as they leave their sweat.
Furthermore, it has produced results. My wife looked at me and said that I was ripped. Now I've done it all: high volume weight lifting, powerlifting, hi intensity training, gym memberships, protien shakes, get-ripped pills, you name it. I used to spend more time getting ready and getting to the gym than I do in my workouts.
Buy this book. It's spiral bound, travels wherever you want. You devise your own workout and push yourself at your own pace. If you want Richard Simmons to dance with you and tell you what to do, this is not for you. If you listen to your body it will tell you when to push harder and when enough is enough.
Actually, I didn't like the format, but I understand why he wrote it this way. He covers body parts rather than formulate complete template workouts. At first this seems like a bummer, until you realize he's giving you tools that you must use to shape yourself. Because he doesn't know you, he's never met you, he doesn't know which tool (excercise) will work best for your body type for how many repetition and how many times a week. I finally understand that I will be doing these excercises for the rest of my life. Hope I look as good as he does when I'm an old man like him. By the way, go to his website. He has updated his haircut. Hahaha.
May be the best fitness book of this centry.......2007-07-29
John Peterson lays out an entire plan to get in the best shape of your life in an easy to follow format. The isometric plans work better and are far safer than conventional weight lifting. The reason is that your working groups of muscles at the same time vs isolaton, thus saving lots of time and effort. Without the weights, your not compressing your spinal discs and avoiding lower back problems in your later years. This method fitness is a far more intelligent approach and superior to any method I ve ever seen. The effects of this training are incredible and fast working.
The utlimate STRENGH book.......2007-07-21
A very good book if your into hard pushup, pullup routines as well as Peterson's very own Tranformetrics routine. I gave the book five stars because I feel that the book is very thorough in explaining itself as well as the fact that it does seem to work. However, at the same time I would suggest that if your looking for a book on bodybuilding, this is not the one to get. This book is on physical fitness only. If your after strengh, this is the book to get. If your looking for a "big" look this is not the book to get. Although you will improve in shape and size by following the book, it is not designed to build looks. Its designed to build strengh and fitness.
The only book you'll ever need........2007-06-04
Large books like these have a tendency to close unless you keep them open. A spiral edition stays open. Buy the spiral edition. You will be really pleased.
I have read and bought reading material for 30+ years. Mr. Peterson is the most interesting writer of exercise. He is a testament to his system. He is over 50 and has a built that 20 year olds would envy.
There is just the right amount of nutrition info but not too much.
His description and instruction is very detailed, not like others who only have a starting and finishing photo.
If you do not collect or spend a lot of time reading exercise books for entertainment, you will have all you need with just this purchase.
Critics need get the facts straight first.......2007-04-12
This book is a wealth full of information that tremendously describes nutrition, muscle, and mind wellness. He is not ripping off Charles Atlas, to the contrary, he has brought a new twist to the fitness culture. If one would just truly try the exercises, they would see that dramatic results. We are looking for functional strength. Stuff that can be used everday, not the bodybuilder strength that will not get you out of a burning building shouldering your loved ones. People just need to open their minds and see that weights aren't the only way to build strength.

Betty Crocker Baking for Today .......2007-01-04
This book arrived on time and was in excellent condition.
A Must-have.......2006-08-21
Being a "Betty-phile"--a Betty Crocker fan from 'way back--I may be prejudiced, but I think BETTY CROCKER BAKING FOR TODAY is a must-have for any kitchen where any amount of baking is done. It's not only highly usable, with numerous classic recipes, but a BEAUTIFUL publication. Incidentally, regarding "Mary's Chocolate Chip Cookies" (p. 92) by Mary Bartz, "former director of the [Betty Crocker] kitchens and cookie expert," I happen to have it directly from Mary that she bakes these cookies at 350 rather than the 375 indicated.
Baking At its Best.......2005-10-26
Betty Crocker cookbooks never fail to please and this one is a real winner! I have already tried two recipes from the book and found them both easy and tasty. One was Pepper Jack Bread and the other was Easy Roll Buttermilk Pie Dough. The former had a wonderful texture and flavor the latter was tender and flaky. There are may many other recipes I want to try from this book during my Sunday afternoon baking sessions. If you love to bake, and like classic recipes as well as new ones, then this book is for you!
Excellent as Always.......2005-09-15
I've been using Betty Crocker cookbooks since I got one as a shower gift before I got married 32 years ago, and I've never been disappointed with a single recipe. This cookbook is no exception. The recipes are clearly written, using ingredients that are readily available or already in a well-stocked kitchen. Great for beginners or experienced cooks alike.
