Murder is a Non-social Activity........2007-08-16
"Detection Unlimited" by Georgette Heyer is the last of her mysteries. It was first published in 1953. By this time Ms. Heyer was consider one of the queens of mystery fiction, but this episode needed a good editing. Too many characters said the same thing numerous times to make a good read. I found myself turning back to make sure I knew which one was suspecting whom.
The light romance is well done, the narrative and dialogue contains some sparking wit and deep insights into human character. Unlike many of Ms. Heyer's works Inspector Hemingway, in spite of all the unsolicited help solves the crime in a very ingenious manner. At points the reader wants to give him a shove in the right direction as well-meaning individuals clutter his path.
Nash Black, author of "Qualifying Laps" and "Sins of the Fathers."
A mystery peopled by a delightful assortment of characters........1999-07-21
Long famous for the historical romances that entranced the teenage girls of earlier generations, Georgette Heyer turned her hand several times to whodunits in the English countryside. Detection is Unlimited when every delightfully drawn citizen of a tiny village offers Chief Inspecter Hemingway theories as to who murdered the socially pushy newcomer. Supects, humour, and romance abound and in the end, Hemingway sees through the false clues and solves the problem with his "special flair."

A So-So book.......2007-07-05
This book wasn't a bad book but it wasn't an oustanding book either. I enjoyed the story, the plot, the twists and turns. What I didn't enjoy was the characters. I wasn't drawn to a single one. Matter of fact, there was not one that I cared about what happened to them. That is a very important factor in a book. If you do not care about the characters, why would you care about what happens. I will get the second book though, only to hope that it will be written better. If not, I won't bother with the third.
Absolutely wonderful.......2007-06-11
Although I agree with one of the other reviews (This book is NOT for children!), the imagery that Margaret is able to produce in this book (and the rest of the series) is absolutely fabulous.
Yes, it contains lesbian romance and physical love.
Yes, it contains lots of violence that is very well described.
Yes, it contains a brutal rape.
**What is more disturbing is that the RAPE and the lesbian romance was what most of these reviews are about. Nevermind the extreme violence right? That is ok, just don't write that 2 women are kissing and making love?
Wonderful book. I love Margaret Weis and will continue to read anything she writes :P
This book ROCKED!.......2007-05-27
I loved this book, I bought it online and half way through it (a few hours later) I ordered the second.. and then third. The most painful part of this book for me was waiting for the mail to arrive! And reading the rest of these reviews. I see many parents complaining about how they allowed their children to read it - well who's fault is that? You shouldn't assume a fantasy book that is not sold in the childrens department to be suitable until you have read it through yourself. The rape scene was terrible... and there were no lovemaking scenes at all really - it seems sad to me that we read such brutality but not the same in love. Though to be honest I don't really like either.. relationships are great, hand holding and kissing - but not keen on sex in books - if I were I'd buy erotica.
I was also alarmed by peoples reactions to the lesbian content. It seemed many people thought it was there to entertain teenagers *blinks* maybe it's just there because unlike all of you Margaret as noticed that *gasp* we do exist.. everywhere and have for centuries. As a lesbian, if I can appreciate the love between Tika and Caramon, and not assume it is put there for the purpose of making teenagers giggle, i don't see why hetrosexuals can't deal with Lesbianism for just being what it is. It's two people in love, it's a beautiful thing - there was nothing graphic in there at all. And It was refreshing for me personally to read a wonderful fantasy book, that just happened to have a lesbian couple in it.. I'd like to read more but sadly don't know of any.
i loved everything about this book.. and the whole series as I said with the exception of the rape scene.. though i guess to an extent it was needed just not quite so graphically. It was a storyline I had not seen before that kept me captivated from begining to end, and I loved Draconas!
Book gets better.......2007-01-22
The town of Seth is protected from dragons by the Mistress of Dragons, a human who is viewed as a goddess. When a nearby kingdom is harrassed by a dragon, a mysterious dragon hunter appears and advises its king to go on a sojourn to request the aid of the Mistress of Dragons in Seth.
The unfolding of the story is slow and filled with events that the reader will find hard to believe, even in a fantasy. A follower of the Dragon Lance saga will be wondering how the co-author of those [mostly] glorious books could have written this weak story. The reader will find some humorous sections in the first third of the book but, even with these, he may find himself questioning whether he should bother finishing the book. The answer to that question is a qualified yes. The book does get better as it progresses. If the reader finishes the book, he will probably decide to go ahead and get the sequel. But, the book's beginning is such a disappointment, many readers will not get far enough along in the book to find out that it does get better.
Having read most of the Dragon Lance books written by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, and then having read books written separately by each of these authors, this reviewer can only conclude that it was something in the pairing of these two individuals that made so many of their books worth reading.
Age inappropriate for pre-teens & "tweens".......2007-01-15
I've bought many of the Weis/Hickman Dragonlance books for my son over the past couple of years. He has been greatly delighted in the writing, so I bought him the Dragonvald Trilogy. He, of course, read them immediately before I could get to them. When I finally got to Mistress of Dragons, I was extremely unhappy with the in depth lesbianism, crude references to heterosexualism and the graphic description of a violent rape. I felt these depictions were not suitable for pre-teens or "tweens" and I was greatly upset that nowhere was there any indication that these topics were included so responsible parents would be able to make an informed choice as to whether or not to allow their children to read such a story.

The Brotherhood of the Academy is a secret society founded during the Renaissance in France. As an organization dedicated to the advancement of science, it ran afoul of the Church, yet still survives in the third millennium. Dr. Sean Shadden, an author, a fashion and furniture designer, and the world's foremost authority on the Franks, is also a Foreman for the Academy. During his tenure he has elected two hundred and ninety nine women into the Academy as sex slaves. His own Master, and director of the Academy, Phillipe Lafayette, insists he go after the last one of his career. She is Lady Dragon. Unwittingly, Sean pursues her, his own interest in her being the similarities to his beloved ex-wife. Complexity can be overwhelming.......2007-05-18
There are many things that separate a good book from a poor or average one and complexity of plot and character is one of them. When things are too simple the reader is not given enough information to empathize with the characters. Plots too need to be detailed enough to keep the reader interested but not confuse them.
Sadly I think this novel is too complex. I found myself needing to take notes and go back and forth to try and figure out who characters were -- now I know that the characters themselves were confused but I as the reader really should not be that confused.
The main character is Sean Shadden and did develop a bit of empathy for him though frankly his emotional and drug problems canceled much of that out. There were so many other characters that I literally had difficulty keeping some of them straight in my mind. If I can't have at least two characters to feel strongly for, I have a hard time finding the romance.
In terms of sex, there is a lot of it here. Sometimes it seems consensual, sometimes not; sometimes it is well detailed, other times it is vaguely described. None of that is bad in and of itself if we have characters we can relate to and want to follow.
I was very disappointed in this book. Having not read other JJ Giles books I can't say if this book is her standard writing or unique.

At 599 pages Lady Dragon is a sprawling work with many delicious characters, plots and sub-plots, global locations from Medieval Europe to mid-America and enough of a history/ fantasy/ fiction theme to keep you turning the pages.
Oh yes, and there is sex, lots and lots of sex and romance. Potential readers should be advised that if the themes of D/s and BDSM aren't your cup of tea you should look elsewhere for your reading enjoyment. But for those of us who do not shy away from a bit of bondage, discipline and dominance, and incredible hot, steamy sex.....then get comfortable and hold on for the ride baby! It doesn't get much better than this.
If you enjoy the Marketplace works of Laura Antoniou then J.J. Giles' centuries-old Academy and the delicious slave "ponies" will fascinate you.
If you love the rich, jet-setting, Irish rogue, Roarke, from J.D. Robb's (Nora Roberts) "...in Death" series then you will certainly be swept away by the rich and rakish Barry Miller from the Australian outback.
If past lives, centuries-old memories, timeless unrequited love, the epic struggle between good and evil for the soul of man, and psychic powers (think Ann Rice) interest you it can all be found in Lady Dragon.
Author J.J. Giles has crafted a story of global power politics, history and religion, sex and seduction, revenge, lust and love. The first in a series, this book concludes with some plot lines unresolved (you are teasing us Ms. Giles) and leaves us wanting MORE! It hasn't ended yet; don't let it stop now. Ouch! May we please have some more?

A good yarn, but terrible presentation.......2006-02-27
It's a pretty good story, actually several stories in one. Going back and forth between the plots is not distracting. That would get the book 5 stars.
I leave off one star for two annoying features. The first seems to be characteristic of vanity press. While the author has no doubt used a spell checker, he has not given the book to be proofread by a native speaker of proper English. The author is consistent in mistaking heard for herd and tomb for tome. I realize that there is a vocal group of readers who claim that good English is not necessary for a good story. Sorry, but every time the rules of English are broken, the movie in my head skips. And I hate that.
The second annoying feature is the author's insistence of showing us how a character's name is pronounced the first time the name is introduced. Even for the trivial names. I found this mildly insulting. Part of the fun of reading a book with funny names is figuring out the pronounciation. Tens of thousands of SF/Fantasy books leave it up to the reader to work it out. Others choose to put in a pronounciation guide as an appendix. Just as with bad English, I found the parenthetical pronounciations jarring and unnecessary.
Aside from these "mechanical" faults, the only fault I have with the plot is the solution of how a dragon mates with a human. There is tremendous build-up in the plot, and finally 3/4 of the way though the book, we find out. I personally found the solution quite boring and mundane.
Despite its flaws, this book stands head and shoulders above the rest of the vanity press books I've read.
Thank (thangk) you (yoo) Michael (my-kul) Mennenga (men-en-gay)!
An imaginative and adventurous story.......2003-01-05
Mistress Of The Dragon by Michael R. Mennenga is the fantastic fantasy tale of Petrill, a half human half dragon child born from the love between Tigora (a powerful and majestic dragon), and Morana, a noble-hearted woman whose love for her dragon mate provides the strength to escape her tormenting captors. With kinship to two worlds, Petrill searches for a sense of belonging - what love can come for one who is descended from scales as well as skin? Mistress Of The Dragon is recommended as an imaginative and adventurous story embracing themes of defining humanity and finding a balance in an unusual and diverse heritage.
A Captivating Story.......2002-04-10
One could easily believe that Mr. Mennenga personally consorts with wizards, fairies and dragons from the believable way he describes them and tells their stories. They draw you in and make you want more. I could visualize the old Wizard Nefress and the tattered and aging Tigora who's love for Morana was so true and yet tragic. I've read this story twice and am now ready for a third time as it takes me away to visit a very wonderful place filled with fascinating creatures and characters. A must read for all fantasy fiction lovers.
My kind of dragon story.......2001-12-12
This book delves into the relationship a human has with a dragon. Quite literally, an astounding display of romance and will in the mind of both human and dragon. The dragon suddenly becomes a center of interest for readers. One would think how the dragon responds to the different situations throughout the book. His reactions and thoughts are so human and yet he is still the dragon. The love between the main characters is artistic and absolutely beautiful, the very epitome of true love itself. The differences between human and dragon are immediately discarded when you read this book. You will treat them as equals when you see the journeys they take. Fans of dragons will enjoy this book, as well as romantics.

This, the second edition of Bipolar Disorder, is thoroughly updated and discusses promising new options for diagnosis and treatment along with new information on the disease's genetic components.
Bipolar disorder is difficult to diagnose. Dr. Mondimore explains how symptoms fluctuate in persons with seasonal affective disorder, how they can lead to a mistaken diagnosis of attention deficit--hyperactivity disorder in children, and how they may be made worse by alcohol or drug addiction.
The disease can also be difficult to treat. Dr. Mondimore gives advice about how to pick a psychiatrist and cope with the stigma of psychiatric diagnosis. He provides extensive information on treatment options, including the advantages, disadvantages, and side effects of various drug therapies.
He also describes what it is like to live with bipolar disorder and discusses how lifestyle changes can improve quality of life. Throughout, he focuses on the importance of building a support system, planning for emergencies, and giving yourself permission to seek help.

Bipolar Disorder:A Guide for Patients and Families.......2007-10-10
One of the best books out there on this topic. Covers all issues and is easy to read for families and even professionals. It has been the most popular book in our Family 2 Family course sponcered by NAMI and is on their list of books that should be read if you or a family member has bipolar illness.
I'm not even bipolar, but I found it very helpful!.......2007-06-17
I borrowed this book from a loved one who is bipolar - I wanted to learn more about bipolar disorder. I sometimes suffer from 'regular' depression (which I now know is called "unipolar"). I was reading the book to better understand my loved one, but ended up better understanding my own depression. The book is so detailed but still easy to read. It gives so much information about how the brain works, the chemicals involved, how drugs affect the brain chemistry - the list goes on and on. I came away from reading this feeling like I'd taken a college course in psychology! Seriously! Now I know terms like "reverse diurnal mood variation" and could actually explain it to someone! I now understand that my own depression seems to be seasonal affective disorder - the description fits my symptoms perfectly. They say that knowing (understanding) is half the battle. I like this book so much that, even though I am not bipolar myself, I'm buying my own copy to add to my collection of self-help books. It's great!
Bipolar Disorder: a guide for patients and famlies.......2007-04-05
Very, very helpful and comprehensive
Not so much.......2007-01-30
I got this book along with 2 others on the subject of Bipolar Disorder. This was my least favorite, a little too technical and scientific. I was looking more for symptoms and ways of coping with the disorder.
A Publication That Really Helps.......2007-01-16
This book was written by an obviously competent physician in terms that were easy to understand and also, occassionally quite funny. Extremely readable, extremely helpful to understanding a complex medical condition, and should be considered required reading for anyone having to deal with this disorder. I sincerely wish this knowledge had been available to me as my child was growing up. I feel I could have used it to benefit our entire family as we could have understood so many things so much better.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The Minimalist Cooks Dinner collects two years of recipes from Mark Bittman's popular New York Times column, "The Minimalist," which cleverly caters to the modern gourmet whose expectations are high but time is limited. In a hundred-odd recipes that cover the end-of-the-day meal gamut from soups and sides to entrées, Bittman packs strong flavor into a few ingredients so that food lovers can return home from a long day at work and make a meal that's satisfying but not exhausting.
With less introductory text but more side notes than Bittman's previous cookbooks (The Minimalist Cooks at Home and the new classic, How to Cook Everything), The Minimalist Cooks Dinner commences with a section of 12 soups and stews--ranging from a truly spare miso soup to the richer Black-Eyed Pea Soup with Ham and Watercress--and then covers pasta, pizza, entrées (with shellfish, fish, poultry, or meat), salads, and starchy sides. Easy dishes such as Steak with Chimichurri Sauce (simply parsley, raw garlic, lemon juice, crushed red pepper, and olive oil), Fish Simmered in Spicy Soy Sauce (soy, sugar, scallions, and chile), or Scallops with Almonds (cayenne, almonds, white wine, and butter) are startlingly delicious, especially considering they take at most 30 minutes to prepare. But perhaps this cookbook's best asset, particularly for less-experienced cooks, are the crucial "Keys to Success" and the improvisational "With Minimal Effort" side bars, which respectively offer additional instruction and suggestions for quick ways to enhance the original dish. While not as comprehensive as Bittman's bestselling How to Cook Everything or The Minimalist Cooks at Home, this is an expertly refined collection that presents perfect, almost effortless meals for every night of the week. --Rebecca Wright

Customer Reviews:
Good idea -- BAD recipes.......2005-10-11
I'm a fairly novice cook, but I can follow a recipe as well as anyone, and I've had excellent results from other cookbooks. I just CANNOT get anything from this cookbook to taste good, and after patiently trying several different recipes (some multiple times), I have completely given up on it. My best results were passable; the worst were inedible.
The yogurt marinade for the "Tandoori Chicken" was absolutely atrocious, and tasted nothing like real Indian food. Cooking times are consistently off -- if Bittman tells you that your chicken will be cooked through in 5 minutes, expect it to still be raw after 10. Furthermore, the recipes may be "simple" in the sense of having few ingredients and short cooking times, but they are not at all durable. Give your dish a bit too much time or heat (even if it's what the recipe calls for!) and you end up with an inedible hunk of leather.
Tonight was my final attempt. Cook minced onions on high heat for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally? Mine were carbonized in 3 minutes, and I just gave up and called in for pizza.
If you have plenty of cooking experience, and can improvise successfully around a recipe that's simply a rough outline -- rather than, well, a recipe -- then you may get decent results from this book. However, if you're the type of cook who expects to follow a recipe to the letter and get good food, then stay away from this book.
Tasty + fast = perfect........2005-08-11
This is an incredibly wise cookbook -- and wisely laid out. All the recipes, like everyone else has been saying, have tips and modification hints. Not a one of the recipes feels cramped, like happens so often, but neither is any space wasted, like in many other thick-spined (and thick-headed) cookbooks. And have I mentioned that they're tasty & fast recipes... hence perfect?!
The Cranberry Pot Roast makes me swoon and long for fresh cranberry season (I do the browning and the saucing in skillet, and the cooking in my crock-pot for 6hrs); the Salmon & Leeks is deliciously bracing; and the Fresh Corn Chowder is wonderful, though I do add an extra helping of onions and tomatoes. Every time I tell my older sister, who's far more conservative about food than I am, that a new recipe's from this book, she consents to try it -- and almost always loves it!
I haven't used any of Bittman's other books, but this one's definitely going on my wishlist. It rocks.
excellent collection.......2004-06-23
Like the companion volume, "The Minimalist Cooks at Home", this is an excellent collection of recipes. His hints on techniques are very helpful, and his recipes use good ingredients and result in clear, strong, delicious flavors. If you're a vegetarian, this isn't a great choice, but otherwise, this is one of my two favorite cookbooks. We have 50 or so cookbooks, but this and "The Minimalist Cooks at Home" are the two I use the most. His recipes make sense, and they don't waste your time or effort.
Vegetarians Beware!.......2003-09-05
Mark Bittman's "How to Cook Everything" is a treasure trove of vegeterian recipes, including tons of recipes for cooking legumes, grains, and vegetables. Unfortunately, those sections are all missing from "The Minimalist Cooks Dinner," which is essentially about cooking meat, poultry, and fish. Vegeterian Bittman fans would be better off sticking with "How to Cook Everything" and/or trying out "The Minimalist Cooks Vegetarian."
This book changed the way I cook.......2003-02-20
My usual routine was to open a can of sauce and throw it over spaghetti weeknights, and then make something fantastic (and complicated) on weekends. Not anymore. Although the recipes in this book are delicious, easy and quick, the real value for me was in the technique lessons he sneaks into every recipe (like searing and steaming chicken breasts) and the encouragement to create your own variations of the recipes. I also liked his flavor combinations- he includes some that I've never tried before as well as the classics, but they've all been very tasty.
I can't recommend this book enough. I also liked "The minimalist cooks at home".
