The teen queen of horror fiction Amelia Atwater-Rhodes is on the prowl again! Continuing in much the same vampire vein that established her reputation, the young writer's sophomore novel also includes a touch of autobiography. Jessica Allodola is a high school senior who pens vampire tales under the pseudonym Ash Night. (Hmmm, sound familiar?) Because of her funereal clothing and cynical demeanor, Jessica is shunned by her sunnier classmates. No matter, she prefers the company of the undead she creates on her laptop, anyway. But Jessica is shaken when a creature from her novel, the suave vampire Aubrey (who fans will remember from In the Forests of the Night) shows up as a new student at her school. Not knowing whether he plans to seduce or harm her, Jessica plays a dangerous game of cat and mouse with Aubrey as she tries to discover the secret of his existence. As she delves deeper into the midnight world of her own novels, she encounters other supernatural beings, like Fala, an evil Egyptian vampire, and Caryn Smoke, a teenaged good witch. When she finally unearths the shocking truth that explains the tangibility of her imaginary world, Jessica must decide if she loves that dark world enough to leave the light forever.
Atwater-Rhode's writing, while still showing strong traces of Anne Rice and Stephen King, is maturing nicely as she cleverly constructs this story within a story. Her vampires, while thousands of years old, have adolescent mood swings and tempers, which will sit well with the under-16 crowd. Demon in My View will undoubtedly find its way into many backpacks and Trapper Keepers. (Ages 12 to 15) --Jennifer Hubert
Book Description
Jessica isn't your average teenager. Though nobody at her high school knows it, her vampire novel has just come out under a pen name. Jessica often wishes that she felt as comfortable with her classmates as she does among the vampires and witches of her fiction. She has always been treated as an outsider at Ramsa High.
But two new students have just arrived in Ramsa, and both want Jessica's attention. She has no patience for overly friendly Caryn, but she's instantly drawn to Alex, a handsome boy who seems surprisingly familiar. If she didn't know better, she'd think that Aubrey, the alluring villain from her novel, had just sprung to life. That's impossible, of course; Aubrey is a figment of her imagination. Or is he?

Don't waste your money.......2007-10-11
Don't let the summary fool you. It sounds interesting, but it's horrible. The plot is pointless, the characterizations are unrealistic, and the main character is definitely not likeable. The entire time I was reading the book, I kept waiting for the good part to start, and then I read the last page and realized it never came. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.
Honestly, it just didn't do it for me........2007-09-30
I had been wanting to read this book for a long time. Word reached my ears that it was amazing.
Well, I was sourly disapointed.
In the book a "flawless" girl named Jessica has a talent for writing vampire storys and thinks thats all that they are- storys.
Then the relization kicks in on how her storys are actually real and vampires want to kill her, one falls in love with her, typico!
I found myself hating this Jessica. Too perfect was she, the author should have created some flaws to make her less dry and boring.
The book was so pridictable that at one point I put it down and didn't come back to it for a week, already knowing what was going to happen.
To me, it was dry and tastless. yet, for a fifteen year old I think if she stives towards making her charatures more interesting, she could come out with a good one.
It honestly didn't do it for me, and if your still debating on wether or not to read it I say go for it. Just, be prepared for disapointment.
Impressed.......2007-08-15
I am once again impressed by Amelia's writing. While it does lack a certain depth, it captures your attention from page one and is filled with action throughout. Both this book and her first, In The Forests Of The Night are worth reading.
Very good........2006-12-18
This is ,yet again, a very interesting book by Amelie Atwater Rhodes. It has an exetremely good veiw on vampires and the charactors have some very thrilling and surprising qualitys. It had a little bit of everything and you should read it!
Demon in My Veiw is about a girl named Jessica who doesn't fit in at school at all. She is looking for something to do , some excitment and when Aubry shows up as a new student at school there is deffinetly some excitement. He is a complete mystery and Jessica decides she will go all the way until she knows more about him. Throughout the book Jessica begins to relize Aubry is very dangerous ,but the great thing about it is she doesn't care! It is a great book , for sure.
Wonderful story.......2006-10-31
she comes up with such creative story lines and creative unique titles that make you want to pick it up and give it more thought, since this book i have read all of her other books! and i love them all!!!

Book Description
She waits for him in the dark, her mind and body perfect, passive, until one day, when he goes to the cellar, and she is gone . . .
In
A Demon in My View, Ruth Rendell creates a character as frightening as he is fascinating. Mild-mannered Arthur Johnson has never known how to talk to women. And his loneliness has perverted his desire for love and respect into a carefully controlled penchant for violence. One floor below him, a scholar finishing his thesis on psychopathic personalities is about to stumble—quite literally—upon one of Arthur's many secrets. Haunting and intelligent,
A Demon in My View shows the startling results of this chilling alchemy of two very disparate minds—one pathological and the other obsessed with pathology.
Customer Reviews:
Psychological Thriller--4 1/2 star quality.......2006-03-23
This small book starts out slowly but soon picks up speed such that you can hardly wait to see what will happen. It has some dark but subtle comedic elements too--especially with the two characters named A. Johnson. It seems more thriller than mystery--certainly not a whodoneit. The psychological elements are very interesting if you are into psychology--especially the method of coping with the central pathology. It does have a number of problematic coincidences--especially two related ones at the very end. I could almost guess the final one. Still, it was a satisfying book, my first Rendell too. I shall read more.
The mind of a psychopath.......2005-02-28
In this thriller, Mrs Rendell portrays a 50 year old psychopath called Arthur Johnson. He fits exactly the definition of a psychopathic person. He is asocial, self centred, impulsive and suffers from an acute anxiety nurosis. He has a strong need to preserve an immaculate ego, he is paranoiac, fears retribution and has an urgent need to be thought well by all people. And men like him cannot be reassured because their belief in their own worthlessness is so intense. Self-confidence cannot be implanted in Arthur anymore at the age of 50. That's why he fears other people - they represent a menace to his own integrity - and so he lives in private isolation.
Characteristically for a psychotic mind, Arthur is unable to form emotional relationships and he has no social ways of coping with his frustrations. This is certainly why Arthur keeps a plastic shop window model in his cellar. This model is dressed in his Auntie Gracie's clothes - for him she is the image of a mother, wife, counsellor, housekeeper and sole friend - which Arthur delights in "strangulating" regularly at night.
A very good thriller which shows that Mrs Rendell understands how a psychopathic mind works and how it can go awry.
Disturbing, eye opening, suspenseful page turner.......2002-11-04
This book won Rendell the Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger Award for 1976 (the most important crime fiction awards in Great Britain.) And I can see why. Extremely well crafted, this book stays with you long after reading it. And you'll read it pretty quickly, because this is a tough one to put down. As a longtime Hercule Poirot/Miss Marple/Agatha Christie fan, I was so happy to discover the Inspector Wexford mysteries, and have read most of these. But this is no Wexford mystery. I was so disturbed by the subject matter, that after I read it, I put it out of sight for a while, but it never went out of mind, so be prepared. This is Rendell, one of the best mystery writers out there today, at her best.
A breathtaking novel.......2002-09-24
Ruth Rendell is unquestionably the best novelist in this, or any generation. Her stories of psychological suspense and downright sheer chillingness will, and deserve to, go down in history as some of the most artful novels ever written. And this, is one of her very very best.
The atmosphere is chilly and hostile, the plot and characters are disturbing and strange. She mixes the normal everyday tpicalities of life with the quirks in the mind of the mentally...different, brilliantly, so that the consequences are amazingly cathartic.
Disturbing, compelling, utterly absorbing, with a shock ending that is a masterpiece of irony, this is an amazing novel.
Another Fine read from Rendell.......2002-04-15
I have never read a boring book by Ruth Rendell. This one centers on a quiet and unnoticed psychopath. As she often does, Rendell places two stories side by side, and brings them together in a mind-blowing resolution. Here, the story of one man's romance with a woman married to a violent mate, and a psychopath brought to the edge by seemingly tiny cirucmstances. It may be a bit schematic - two men who coinicdentally have the same first initial and last name, a woman who leaves her violent husband just as the other story has reached a climactic crisis - but it is so much fun, so imaginative and not-quite-predictable, and such a fitting reader-revenge - that it is forgiveable.
It does seem: you can always count on Rendell.

Book Description
The year is 2099. North America is in chaos, ruined by years of war, terrorism, and ecological destruction. Marauding motorcycle gangs roam the land, while a secret society of mutants who practise devilish rites terrorize the innocent. Young Toby Johnson lives with his father, one of the Old Believers, a religious sect that clings to stern moral values. Although embarrassed by his father's quaint ways, Toby is horrified when a motorcycle gang attacks their modest homestead.
To help the old man, the boy must travel with his dog across the dangerous countryside, a journey on which he is joined by a mysterious black man named Jim White, who seems to be in touch with higher powers and may himself be angel or demon. In the end Toby earns a saving gift for his father and meets Sarah â clever, beautiful, and haunted by a demonic past â who will change his life forever. A retelling of the biblical Book of Tobit, Demon in My View is a powerful breakthrough novel.

A colorful package.......2006-06-27
In "Relentless," the creative team behind Elektra showed us how the resurrected assassin stalked and executed her prey in a series of global assignments. Now, in "Frenzy," the focus is on a single job: the murder of the mysterious religious and political leader of a growing band of freedom fighters/terrorists in the turbulent island nation of Naou.
It's easy enough for an agent of Elektra's caliber to infiltrate the rebel encampment. But her resolve is tested when she tracks down the leader -- who proves to be a charismatic, bloodthirsty 8-year-old boy who claims to be a spiritual prophet reincarnate.
Elektra's solution is, of course, inspired. Even more interesting in this book are the views of her stealthy, ghost-like movements through the camp; her ability to pass unseen -- and sometimes to leave bleeding corpses in her wake -- would be uncanny if this wasn't a comic book.
The art in this collection is clean and stylish, maintaining a standard set by earlier volumes of the ongoing series.

Wonderful book.......2007-07-19
This is a great book for natural healing and understanding the homeopathic healing methods. This book is great and easy to understand and read.
Homeopathy made easy.......2007-05-10
This book is well-written, easy to read, and contains a lot of valuable information for the person who would like to use homeopathic medicines at home. This is definitely one of the books that I would keep for future reference.
Everybody's guide to homeopathic medicines.......2007-01-09
This book arrived in a timely manner and in the condition promised. It will be a great reference book for many years to come. It contains a great amount of invaluable information. This book was also given as gifts for family members.
Quackery.......2006-07-09
I bought this as my first book on homeopathic medicine in order to learn more about it. My conclusion is that there is woefully inadequate evidence to support the theory.
If I were to claim to have a Toyota in my garage, you shouldn't be too surprised or demand extremely strong evidence in order to believe me. This is because there are clearly many people who do in fact have a Toyota in the garage. This is a very orinary claim.
On page 12 of Everybody's Guide, the author points out that "Most scientists believe that no medicine diluted more than 12c potency could have any biochemical effect, since it is improbable that any molecules of the original substance remain." This belief is based on basic prinicples of the very well developed fields of Biology and Chemistry.
If Homeopathic medicine did work in dilutions more than 12c, it would shatter some basic principles of Chemistry and Biology. Unlike religious leaders, scientists fantasize about making or proving a discovery that shatters currently accepted models. This type of discovery can clearly lead to a Nobel prize and world-wide fame in the scientific community.
In order to believe a claim that shatters currently accepted models of Biology and Chemistry, we need evidence of extraordinary quality. On page xiv in the preface, the author reports on a 1991 study by three Dutch professors. Of 107 trials, they found 22 studies that met their criteria for scientific quality. Of these, 15 showed that homeopathic medicines worked.
It is of course possible that these studies were somehow flawed or fraudulent, or that they lacked the statistical certainty to overthrow currently accepted science. As I said, we need evidence of extraordinary quality. I don't know what happened to the Dutch professors after 1991, but I haven't seen any Nobel prizes awarded!
Things that really exist develop and improve over time. Look how much science has advanced in the past 100 years. How much has Homeopathy advanced in the past 180 years? Not much as far as I can tell.
Save your money on Homeopatyic books and medicines. Eat well, get plenty of excercise and sleep, and go to a real doctor when you have a medical problem.
One of the best home based homeopathy books.......2006-06-16
Each time this book was reprinted since the 1980's, I've bought the new editions and liked each one even more! I give it to all of my friends new to homeopathy. The chapters focus on specific ailments (sore throats, accidents and injuries, headaches, digestive problems, etc.) and have leading questions to ask the patient to help you find the correct remedy for the acute ailment. There are cautions about when you need to call a health care provider for an illness. And there are enough remedies described that you most often will find the one that will work. It's just a very helpful book and a good introduction to the wonders of homeopathy. I have shelves of homeopathy books, but I often start with this one if one of our family is sick.

Customer Reviews:
Easy, delicious, and authentic.......2005-12-11
I'm always on the hunt for authentic cookbooks and the spiral ethnic cookbooks from Penfield Press of Iowa City, IA are the best buy around.
It's true that big things come in small packages. These books are packed with tons of history and, best of all, delicious recipes that are easy to prepare, don't take too much time to cook, and won't have you searching everywhere and spending a fortune for the ingredients. The history sprinkled throughout the book gave a good background to the food being prepared and enriched the cooking experience for me.
The first things I made from this book were two drinks: Cherry Vodka and Medivka (Honey Liqueur). Although I don't drink, I had a sip of each and boy were they good. (Although the cherry vodka has to ferment for 2 weeks, the wait is definitely worth it). I also made the Turkey Breast with Cherry Sauce and my mouth watered during the entire meal.
I've bought and made dishes from the Dutch, Danish, and Irish cookbooks of the same series and the final product will turn out an authentic ethnic dish without the gourmet prices for the book or the ingredients.
Highly recommended.
Good & authentic.......2002-11-13
I love the spiral binding. It makes this perfect for actually cooking & reading the recipe. The small size is fun too. It's a good basic Ukrainian cookbook. Of course, not all the recipes I remember are in here, but there's a pretty good mix of recipes.
Delicious Ukrainian Recipes.......2000-11-05
NEW in the series of Stocking Stuffer cookbooks, in the popular recipe-card file size Stocking Stuffer format, this book represents Ukrainian cooking as one of the best homestyle cuisines of the world - basic, fresh, wholesome and nutritious, yet still possessing a taste as rich as the black soil itself.
Ukrainian food is not often found in restaurants, for it is a style of cooking best meant for families, for homecomings, and for holidays. The majority of recipes in this book come from Ukrainian-American homes, where Joanne Asala, who collected the recipes, shared the food and native traditions.
One-hundred-sixty pages include recipes for daily fare and festive celebrations. Notes and menus for traditional observances of Christmas, Easter, and the wedding feast are included with the recipes. Among these are Flummery, Kutia, one of the most sacred of ritual dishes; Easter Bread, Paska, and Honey Nut Cake for weddings.
On the cover is a photo of a candelabra representing the trident, a traditional symbol of Ukraine. Examples of the exquisite, symbolic folk art, especially egg design, krashanky, are found throughout the book with reference to the significance of the various designs.
Excellent for personal collections, as well as a thoughtful gift and memento.
Very Good Guide.......2000-02-13
I think it is a great book to learn to cook from and a good guide for people who just started to cook or the people who are originally from Ukraine and want to keep on cooking!

Book Description
In old Ukraine, cuisine was a highly developed art form. Traditional cookery, here evoked in a comprehensive and well-researched assortment of menus and recipes, reflected the productivity of a rich farming and sheepraising region, celebrated the festivals in the church calendar, and marked important family milestonesbirths, christenings, name days, betrothals, weddings, and commemorations of the dead.
In addition to precise instructions designed for the modern kitchen, thirty-eight drawings illustrate the correct technique for filling dumplings and cabbage rolls and the artistry involved in baking the famous Ukrainian Easter paska and fancifully embellished wedding breads. An authoritative reference section and note on sources will be an aid to scholars and all concerned with the preservation of Ukrainian culture.
Far more than a cookbook, festive Ukrainian Cooking is also a definitive account of traditional Ukrainian culture as perpetuated in family rituals and lovingly celebrated with elegantly prepared food and drink. Working from original sources in Ukrainian, Russian, and Polish, and drawing on long experience as an accomplished cook herself, Marta Pisetska Parley arranges these recipes as they were enjoyed throughout the year, beginning with the Christmas season and ending with succulent dishes made with wild mushrooms gathered in the fall. Chapter introductions describe the folkways associated with major holidays and family events and the symbolic and celebratory role of food appropriate to each.
Devotees of ethnic cuisine, experienced cooks and beginners alike, will find much to choose from in this authoritative collection that encompasses the best of a rich, varied, and healthful culinary tradition.
Customer Reviews:
At last, understandable!.......2002-02-21
For any Ukrainian food/holiday tradition enthusiast tired of struggling through encoded recipes from "babtsia," this is the book for you!!! It provides simple recipes and introductions to the mysterious art of Ukrainian cooking -- "borshcht kvas," "pravdyviy hryby," et. al. -- as well as modern versions of the old traditions. Makes a traditional Ukrainian Christmas a reality.
Excellent recipes - like mom or grandmother used to make.......2000-11-25
Used to drive me crazy when my mother cooked Ukrainian foods and never had a recipe. Well, with this book all that has changed. I use it for those recipes where "a little of this and a little of that and then you mix it together" mean little to me. Also has excellent explanations of the different holidays and foods appropriate for the holiday.
Excellent, easy-to-follow recipes.......1999-12-02
