4 out of 5 stars Good story, good history.......2007-08-14

This book, the second in the Daisy Dalrymple life, is a good second, no let down in characters, nor in setting. I enjoy Carola Dunn's work very much, and recommend her to any Christie fan.

4 out of 5 stars The First in a Great Series.......2007-08-11

This is the first in the Daisy Dalrymple Mysteries. The Honourable Daisy Dalrymple has recently entered the journalism world as a light reporter on the various estates for Town and Country. When she arrives at Wentwater Court, the atmosphere is charged with deceit and deception. Then, when Lord Stephen Astwick is found dead on the frozen pond, her pictures show an interesting twist. Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher is brought in to figure out what happened.

This book sets the stage for future novels involving Daisy and Alec. It's light, frothy and fun. The book uniquely captures the post WWI feelings in England, that American readers will find very interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best.......2006-01-30

This is a great series, but I'm glad this was not the first book I read. This didn't have the depth or plot interest that many of the others had. I think it was trying to introduce the series, but it was too slow. While its worth a read as part of the series, don't start here or you won't read the rest of the wonderful series!

2 out of 5 stars Uninteresting "Death".......2004-08-09

Imagine an Agatha Christie mystery with the goofy upper-class air of P.G. Wodehouse -- and you will get what Carola Dunn clearly wanted for her debut mystery. Unfortunately, "Death At Wentwater Court" is too predictable and too easily unravelled, and the mysteries are solved with whimpers instead of bangs.

Daisy Dalrymple -- in defiance of her class -- has taken on a job as a journalist. She arrives at Wentwater Court to do an extensive article on the Dalrymple house, but soon finds that there are potentially deadly secrets lurking there. Lady Wenwater has either a lover or a blackmailer, and her much-older husband is unaware of this. His daughter is infatuated with the blackmailer, and his sons either worship or hate his new wife.

Then the blackmailing guest is found dead in an icy river, and almost everyone present had a motive for wanting him dead (not to mention his army of ex-lovers and their husbands). Daisy teams up with police detective Alec Fletcher to unearth who did the blackmailer in, and why. But soon Daisy learns that the crime is more complicated than she thought...

"Death" is an extremely simple book -- it more or less goes from point A to point B without a lot of twists and turns. It has a fun, cozy atmosphere with a classic setting reminiscent of Christie and Sayers, but without the sizzly plot and dynamic twists that they were well known for. It's almost painfully easy.

Dunn seems to chicken out about halfway through the book, as if she's afraid to make things too complex. Half the red herrings -- such as Lady Annabel's scandalous past, or her stepdaughter's darker side -- are built up as plot developments, only to be brushed aside with a "oh, is that it?" response. And what's the point of a murder mystery if the killer starts sobbing for no reason in front of the detective? However, she does handle the character relationships well, as well as the pleasantly earthy atmosphere of a country manor.

Daisy herself isn't a terribly good character -- while she's refreshingly flawed and likable, she doesn't actually do much detecting. The other characters -- the stoic aristocrat, his neurotic kids, the tough cop -- are more or less stereotypes, pleasant but not memorable. Damsel-esque Lady Annabel in particular lacks a personality, and her blackmailer is all evil, all the time.

Carola Dunn has a good sense of atmosphere and subtle interaction, but she strikes out in her first attempt at mystery writing. Here's hoping the rest of the Daisy Dalrymple series is far and above the pallid "Death in Wentwater Court,"

3 out of 5 stars A very British cozy.......2001-08-31

I am an ardent reader of British mysteries. I was first drawn to this genre by reading a series of cozies. Over the years my tastes have changed, though, and I now much prefer a British psychological thriller or police procedural. However, I still read a cozy now and then for a change of pace.

"Death at Wentwater Court" is the first book in a series featuring The Honourable Daisy Dalrymple and Inspector Alec Fletcher of Scotland Yard. Take a weekend gathering at a country estate in the 1920's, one of the guests who is the unfortunate victim, suspects galore, a promising romantic story line, more red herrings than clues and you have the makings of the ultimate cozy.

Most of the sleuthing is done by Daisy, a member of the British aristocracy who, being rather down on her luck, is supporting herself by working as a journalist. Alec seems to be along for the ride providing her with bits of information that set her off in her pursuit to solve the murder. Oh, he also serves a very important role as a possible suitor for Daisy.

I am giving this book three stars because I found it to be a bit too one-dimensional for my tastes. However, if you like an old fashioned very British mystery, this just might be your cuppa.

From Timeless Tales reviewer Chere Gruever

DREAMQUEST is an anthology of nine different tales by very talented authors. The one thing that binds all nine stories together is a quest for love.

THE BEAUTY IN THE BEAST, by K.G. McAbee is the story of Erik and Arraine DuBois. Erik's father is a gambler. He lost their whole estate in a game of chance. Erik's older brothers left as soon as they could, leaving Erik to care for the old man. Well, imagine Erik's surprise when his father tells him of his newest loss. You see, Erik is now to live in the castle with Lady DuBois. His father lost quite a bit of money and Lady DuBois bought his debt in return for Erik's companionship. Erik's first sight of Lady Arraine DuBois is quite shocking. She appears in the chair next to him and wears a mask.

THE GIRL IN THE BOX by Janet Miller is set in the futur. Amirilla Asteras works the late shift voluntarily for she doesn't want anyone to see her. Her legs were mangled at birth and her whole lower body is encased in a box. It's the only mobility she has. Ganth is an unattached Gaian male and Ami's friend. He never leaves his ship when in port. Amirilla knows Ganth wants to see her, but Ami refuses. She knows she will be unacceptable as a mate to anyone and is afraid of what will happen when Ganth finally sees her.

C.B. Scott's KNIGHT MOVES is the contemporary story of Janie Lane. She is not the type of woman to have men crawling all over her. Even her mother always called her "Plain Jane". That's probably the reason she's here in the theater on a Saturday night watching KNIGHT MOVES for the fifth time. A man enters the theater and flirts with her. Right after the movie begins, she feels a pull on her purse and scuffles with the man, ending up banging her head into the wall. When she wakes up, she finds herself in the movie!

KALLAAYT'S TALE by Rosemary Laurey is a tail of dragons. In this story, we have a group of dragons staying far away from mortals. Their numbers have been dwindling and they need human mates to increase their numbers again. Kallaayt has met a mortal woman named Gwen. She lives in an inn and knows him as Kall, a peddler. Kall stays at her father's inn whenever he travels. Gwen has promised herself to Kall. Now is the time for Kallaayt to go and claim Gwen. But before he can bring her home, he must tell her what he is.

INTERFACE by Isabo Kelly is another futuristic story. Gina's father is a noted scientist and she is working on a special project for him. But someone has been sending serious threats to her father and then carrying them out. The next name on the list is Gina's. Her father convinces her to stay away from work for a month and go with two men he has hired to protect her. The two men are both very good looking, but Gina is drawn to the leader, Mr. Alexander.

The next story is a contemporary, THROUGH THE WOODS by Ellen Edgar. Beth Hawthorne was devastated when she discovered her husband's infidelity and decided to move into an isolated cabin for a while. The only company Beth will have will be her cat. Beth decides to go for a walk and runs into a little girl who asks for her help. Her father is hurting and she wants Beth to help him. The child refuses to go into the run down building with Beth. Inside she finds a man with a gun.

SMOKE AND MIRRORS by Donna MacMeans is another contemporary story. Amber has always been fat and is never invited when her co-workers plan to go out after work. After work, she decides to take a route that will keep her away from people. She sees a small antique shop. Once inside, the shopkeeper shows her a beautiful amber necklace. The shopkeeper names a ridiculously low price for the necklace, but he will only accept cash. Amber checks her wallet and finds herself a dollar short. The shopkeeper tells her to check her change and she finds the dollar in coin. The shopkeeper tells her the necklace told him it was meant for her and the amount to charge for it. Amber is expecting to spend the weekend alone again and tells herself she wishes she was thin. When she wakes up, she looks in a mirror and she's thin.

TO CALL THE MOONS by Megan Sybil Baker is another fantasy. Torrin is a full-blood Chalith, a mage. He came in response to a calling and found her in the prison of Frothborn. He came to her in the guise of a guard. She hired him to help her escape and take her to Master Rowan. She looks like a thief and gave her name as Miera. The Chalith have been hunted and killed until they are down to seven in number. He needs to discover her purpose in seeking Master Rowan. Of course, once she discovers what he is, he will have to kill her. He finds himself strangely reluctant to do so. Torrin is attracted to her.

Our last story, LADY OF MARAGORN by J.C.Wilder, is another fantasy. Nia, Lady of Maragorn, has been cursed. Her mother, an elf, fell in love with a mortal man. When she told him of her pregnancy, he turned his back on her. Nia must kiss her true love in order to break the curse. She has tried, many times and her home is filled with the little stone gargoyles that were once men. She has lived this lonely existence for over two hundred years and is tired of it. She has decided to kill herself. Nia dresses in the gown that was to be her mother's wedding gown and goes to the cliff. Just before she jumps off, a man comes and begs her aid. Two dwarves are following him. They demand the return of the man. Nia refuses and scares them away. Nia is a healer and decides to heal the man before she takes her life.

There is a story for every taste in DREAM QUEST. Everything from fantasy to contemporary and science fiction. All nine of these stories will take you away to a different time and place in your quest for love. They are all very well written with wonderful believable characters and you can understand the time and place from the very beginning of the tale. Even though they are all very different stories, I got an immediate feel for the tale from the very beginning of the story. I can't recommend DREAM QUEST highly enough!

I would be hard pressed to figure out which tale I enjoyed most. Most, if not all, of these authors have won (or been nominated for) several awards due to their spectacular writing talents. The price is a bit high for a paperback, but this is an over-sized paperback and well worth every cent. RECOMMENDED HIGHLY! ****

Dream Quest contains 9 short stories by 9 different authors. It includes:

'The Beauty in the Beast' by K.G. McAbee - When Erik's father looses him in a game of chance, he is forced to serve Lady Arraine DuBois, the mystery woman in the silver mask. She comes to him to talk, but never lets him touch her or see her face. What Erik cannot figure out is why?

'The Girl in the Box' by Janet Miller - Amirilla Asteras was born crippled due to her mother's exposure to radiation. She has always lived in a box and so she keeps to herself, working 3rd shift at the space station and making few friends. However, she and Ganth, a Gaian, who comes to dock at the station, have become friends - maybe more than friends. But how can she face him, knowing what his reaction will be to the box?

'Knight Moves' by C.B. Scott - Janie Lane is used to doing things alone so she isn't really bothered too much by going to see her favorite movie starring Kenrick Bonel in a deserted theater. But when a freak accident thrusts Janie into the movie opposite Kenrick where his ladylove is supposed to be, Janie is forced to call upon reserves of courage that she never knew she had...

'Kallaayt's Tale' by Rosemary Laurey - Kallaayt, a dragon, seeing the happiness of Aaragh and Myfanwy (their story is in Paradox), is determined to return to the human world and ask Gwen to be his mate. However, when he returns to Gwen's city, he finds things are much changed. He also discovers that Gwen has been brutally raped and is expecting the man's child. How can Kallaayt convince Gwen that he still loves her and that she is worthy of his love?

'Interface' by Isabo Kelly - Gina is a scientist for Xanac Corp and has been working with a small team on a secret project researching M-SIDs. She is determined to come up with a solution to the planet's problems, but death threats arrive as a traitor leaks their progress. Gina is forced to rely on the expertise of Alex Longfeather to keep her safe from their terrorists. But will Alex still care for her when he finds out what the M-SIDs did to her?

'Through the Woods' by Ellen Edgar - Beth Hawthorne fled to the old cabin on the lake to escape her divorce. She felt so alone and was actually happy to meet the small girl playing in the woods. When the girl, Jenny, asked Beth to help her father, Beth had no idea that he was planning on committing suicide. Why would a man who had such a wonderful daughter ever plan on leaving her?

'Smoke & Mirrors' by Donna MacMeans - When Amber Wilson finds a magical necklace at an old junk shop, she is thrilled to find that her wish of loosing 20 pounds has come true. She gets a total makeover and is excited to be going out with a gorgeous new guy, Todd Fletcher. Until she discovers that the magic only seems to work sometimes...

'To Call the Moons' by Megan Sybil Baker - Torrin is a Chalith, a master of an ancient mage line, hunted for his skills and feared for what he is. But he also responds to Callings and Miera has called him, for what purpose, he does not know. All that Torrin does know is that he must kill Miera before she finds out what he truly is...

'Lady of Maragorn' by J.C. Wilder - Nia, a half elf healer, has lived alone in the woods since her mother died. Renowned throughout the land for her healing powers, there are some brave souls who overcome their fear to ask for her aid. Other brave heroes come to break the terrible curse that was laid on her when she was a child. For Nia must find her true love and kiss him to be free from the curse. There is only one problem - every man she kissed turns into an ugly stone statue! Nia cares too much for Ranulf to even try and break the curse anymore and is ready to give up her own life rather than suffer anymore. But Ranulf may have a thing or two to say about that...

This was a very good collection of paranormal/fantasy/science fiction romances and a great introduction to some of these very talented authors. 'The Girl in the Box' and 'To Call the Moons' were my favorites in this anthology and the book is worth buying for these two alone! The frustrating thing about the anthology is that all of the stories are quite short - the whole book is only 240 pages long. Still, I can tell that all of these authors were really talented because I became attached to their characters even though I was only with them for a few pages. If you like your romance with a touch of the otherworldly then don't miss this anthology - it is well worth the ebook price!

4 out of 5 stars Follow your DREAM...QUEST........2003-09-21

K.G. McAbee writes an intensely dark and gripping tale about THE BEAUTY IN THE BEAST. C.B. Scott tells of a woman with almost no self-worth who discovers just how worthy she really is in KNIGHT MOVES. Rosemary Laurey held me enthralled with her tale of a dragon, his deep love for a human woman, and the battle he's willing to fight for her. Megan Sybil Baker pens a classic story about a winged warrior and his unlikely love in TO CALL THE MOONS. Newcomer Janet Miller tells a heartwarming tale of THE GIRL IN THE BOX, who finds love where she expects none. LADY OF MARAGORN by J.C. Wilder is a touching and emotional read about true love threatened by a kissing curse.

These short-shorts are just a taste of what you can expect from DREAM QUEST, an anthology that contains nine assorted paranormal romance stories by a diverse group of authors, who range from bestsellers to relative newcomers.

DREAM QUEST is an excellent collection of short stories that showcases all of these authors' writing talents and skills. I highly recommend this anthology to anyone looking for vastly different and exciting paranormal romance reads. From shapeshifters to space stations and beyond, you won't be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars For all perfectionists out there .......2007-08-26

It was a blow for me when I learned that I am a perfectionist. I started reading about it, and this was my first book. It was hard from time to time to face the truth that this book was presenting me.

2 out of 5 stars Quite a let down, inadequate for "discouraged perfectionists".......2007-05-14

After reading Leman's "The Birth Order Book" and seeing that my wife and myself have been struggling with the predicted first-born power struggles and head butting for the last 10 years, both of us as "discouraged perfectionists" were looking for a book to offer pragmatic solutions for change.

In looking at the overwhelmingly positive reviews for this book, I purchased it. The book has some major draw-backs:

                1. The text addresses perfectionism according to Hewitt & Flett, and Frost; however, the typical treatment of perfectionism is one usually of an aggressive perfectionist, such as a "nag" or a critical boss; this is not reflective of the "discouraged perfectionist" and often leaves one thinking "ok... this would be a good strategy if I was a freak-out, but it doesn't really apply to me"

                2. The authors have an ideological bias that is evident throughout the text which I would describe as "open-minded liberalism" combined with "anti-religious," which is really quite disturbing. Examples that stick out in my mind include:
p46 - a comparison of "the right way" to wash dishes is compared with "wrong" ways leads to reader to accept that "washing" may entail soaking dishes in water without soap is somehow equally acceptable (as if sanitation is invalid as a basis for a "right way")
p50 - Attending church services are an outlet of attempting to confirm perfectionistic beliefs rather than seeking out experiences that "challenge" those beliefs
p180 - where a therapist convinces a patient that the daughter comes home from college with a lip-piercing isn't as big of a deal as it feels

                3. The demeanor the authors use is almost as if they are not addressing a condition that affects people in very personal ways which causes internal conflict and real heart-ache. They might as well be addressing bicycle repair, how to implement work-arounds in Chebyshev filter design software, or dog-training. These are exactly the kinds of individuals I strongly suspect of total hypocrisy, and I wonder how screwed up their own marriages and children are

In conclusion, this book may be very good for a certain cross-section of people (which is why I gave it two stars instead of one), i.e. perfectionists who are obsessive, angry, controlling neat-freaks. But for the rest of those who might be considered relatively "normal" or who are just looking to relate better with others, this book will probably be inadequate.

5 out of 5 stars What I would have written.......2007-02-10

This book contains exactly what I was looking for the past 10 years. I've learned much about myself. I would probably not read the last section b/c it's just a repeat of what's in the book, but being a perfectionist, I had to. If you can stand it, only read what applies to you in the last section and save your time for something else.

4 out of 5 stars There is help out there!.......2005-08-18

I've struggled my whole life with a number of issues: perfectionism, low self-esteem, self-destructive behaviour.

This despite the fact that I'm intelligent. Intelligence isn't always enough. Some of us need practical help to see where our thinking patterns and actions are flawed or self-defeating. Without external help it's difficult to be objective about this.

"When Perfect isn't Good Enough" is a practical self-help book to assist you in identifying and changing perfectionistic thinking patterns. I only bought the book recently, but I've already been bowled over by the number of insights I've gained from its pages. I plan to study and fully integrate the info over time. I can only imagine how doing so will contribute to my productivity!

Other exceptional self-help books that I would like to recommend are:
                * The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey
                * The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem by Nathaniel Branden
                * Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman

None of these books are quick-fixes. Integrating their contents takes a lot of work and courage, but the results are of inestimable value!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for understanding and changing perfectionism.......2004-01-29

As a psychologist working in a college counseling center, I see many students who beat themselves up with perfectionistic-type thoughts such as "If I don't get an A in this class, I'm a failure" or "I can't let my friends know I'm upset because they'll think there's something wrong with me." These destructive thoughts can have a devastating impact by leading to anxiety, depression, and a host of other difficulties, and this is the #1 book I recommend to students who are struggling with these issues.

The first section of the book, Understanding Perfectionism, helps the reader to better understand the impact of perfectionism on their life, particularly in the areas of thoughts and behavior. The second section, Overcoming Perfectionism, begins with a self-assessment designed to help the reader identify how their own perfectionistic tendencies manifest. Following the assessment, specific exercises assist the reader in identifying goals and developing a plan for change. Finally, this section offers a wide variety of strategies for changing perfectionist thoughts and behaviors.

The final section of the book focuses on specific problems related to perfectionism, with chapters on depression, anger, social anxiety, worry, obsessive-compulsive behavior, and body image. These chapters contain additional exercises, further information on coping strategies, and an overview of available mental health treatment for each concern.

I particularly like the workbook-style format of this book, as it provides the reader with personalized assistance. Reading this book is an excellent first step for anyone who is trying to understand and wanting to change their perfectionistic tendencies; it also can be used as an adjunct to therapy.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous and Delicious Cooking.......2007-08-07

I LOVE THIS BOOK... not only are the recipes marvelous, the stories Berman adds to particular recipes make the reader feel like they truly are cooking authentic chinese food. The recipes are simple and easy and loads of fun to cook!!

5 out of 5 stars oil-reduced method for this book.......2007-01-19

The reviewers' problems with the book seem to be around the use of 2 cups of oil in every recipe. I have not read the book, but the technique of first frying in a large quantity of oil before stir-frying is called "velveting," and it produces marvelous texture and flavor. The same result may be achieved by using water in place of oil.(Thank you Barbara Tropp; may you rest in piece.) Simply drop the marinated meat in a pot of boiling water for a few seconds, drain and proceed with the stir-fry. It's the heat you are after - it sets the marinade and the proteins so juices are locked in during the stir-fry. The result is incomperably succulent, tender and flavorful meat. Try!

                5 out of 5 stars Pretty Awesome!!!.......2006-04-04

I love chinese food! Never could make it right though and nothing ever tasted like I got in the restaurants. Most chinese cookbooks seemed to miss the mark where it came to replicating the restaurant type food. I gave up on chinese food altogether for over 10 years.

I bought this on a whim this last winter and couldn't believe how good this stuff was. For me, it cracked the nut on restaurant style chinese cooking. This stuff is so freaking easy and the same ingredients in varying quantities are used throughout the book. You DO NOT have to have an extensive pantry to make this stuff and it is as tasty as anything you will ever order in a restaurant.

As a matter of policy and courtesy, I usually don't say anything about another review but there is one here that talks about having to use two cups of oil everytime you make something and how it isn't all that practicle. The person is right, for a lot of recipes the books tells you to have 2 cups of oil to cook your meat but you don't have to. I just sautee mine when I'm not in the mood to go all out or just use my deep fat frying and just reuse the oil like I normally would for anything else. It's not that big of a deal.

The sauces in this book are worth the price on their own and you won't be sorry.

2 out of 5 stars not practical for home use........2006-03-04

Just a bit of a warning. Everything and i do mean everything in this book requires two cups of oil to fry the meat, poultry or what ever your cooking. It's definantly not an option for a healthy eater. Not to mention that using two cups of oil everytime you fix something could be a little expensive. I also purchased "Breath of a Wok" at the same time as this book and i highly recommend it instead.

                5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!.......2005-10-10

The recipes in this book have the most fabulous flavor!! Mr. Chang Berman explains how to cook them extremely well, explains the what the ingredients are, how to prepare the more uncommon ones and recommends the best brands. The illustrations in the book are wonderful and the stories he relates are definitely great. I rarely, if ever, read a "cookbook's" anecdotes, but this one is definitely worth doing. I wish I could write this review as well as Mr. Chang Berman writes his book. If you really enjoy cooking and love Chinese, get this book!!!! By the way, the Brown Sauce (both versions) - to die for!!! Thank you, sir!
