Book Description

From esteemed crime novelist Philip R. Craig comes a scorching new Martha's Vineyard mystery, the latest in a series renowned not only for its beautiful setting but also for its fine appreciation of an extraordinary island's rich heritage.

It's a picture-perfect Vineyard summer, and ex-Boston cop J.W. Jackson finds time for lazy afternoons at the beach with his wife, Zee, and the kids. Nothing could be better, but of course not everything is peaceful, even on this idyllic island. A teenage girl has already drowned in an early-summer tragedy. The more superficial conflict du jour centers on a group of cyclists, led by irascible environmentalist Henry Highsmith, who fervently oppose new construction, including plans for a luxurious new golf course.

J.W. is not part of the golf course battle, at least not until he and a bad-tempered Highsmith come to blows at the local fish shop. The dispute is not over fish. J.W. parked his vehicle too close to Highsmith's fancy bike, an unpardonable offense. Is there more to the J.W.-Highsmith feud than seems to be the case? Some people think so, especially when an SUV suspiciously like J.W.'s forces Highsmith's wife, Abigail, off her bicycle, sending her to the emergency room.

When J.W.'s rich businessman friend Glen Norton invites him to join a golfing foursome at Waterwoods, the island's prettiest club, he's happy to accept. At least he's certain not to run into Highsmith on the manicured greens. J.W. is not much of a golfer, but Zee hopes he'll get some exercise and stay out of trouble.

Wrong. Trouble is waiting for J.W. in the sand trap at the fourth hole -- the sand trap with the human hand protruding from below. The hand is connected to a body, and it's clearly a case of murder. With circumstantial evidence pointing to J.W., he must act fast, peeling back layers of deceit surrounding old Vineyard families in his search for a killer.

Alive with the sights, smells, and tastes of Philip R. Craig's beloved island, Dead in Vineyard Sand includes three classic recipes, featuring the decadent Lobsters, Croissants, and Champagne. Just in time for summer reading, this appealing blend of Vineyard ambiance and intrigue will thrill both beachgoers and city dwellers looking for vicarious pleasure.

Includes three delicious recipes

5 out of 5 stars maddening, yet fun.......2006-12-30

This is the most humorous of the Philip Craig books I have read so far. The book starts with a casual reference to a beach drowning in early summer on Martha's Vineyard, and then hits the golf course. Our hero, J.W. Jackson is coaxed into rejoining a game he hadn't played in about 30 years, and by the time he reached the fourth hole - ut oh - a surprise! Shifty looking golf partners add to the intrigue. A gun appears in a most unexpected place! So what is going on? As J.W. becomes implicated in a murder, he fights to clear his name, by poking around all over the Vineyard and asking questions trying to make sense of strange circumstances. All kinds of red herrings abound in this well thought out plot. Bravo Mr. Craig, well done!

5 out of 5 stars really true to the island and its lure.......2006-09-14

again phillip has done a wonderful job in keeping enough suspense and yet revelaling the charm of this island.
somehow i suspect that mr jackson is phil himself

5 out of 5 stars Vinyard matters..........2006-08-28

This latest installment is as good as the others.
I anxiously await the next one.
I also await the next Brady Coyne/J.W. Jackson installment.
It's been awhile.

5 out of 5 stars Another Craig Wonderful Book.......2006-08-24

Phillip Craig has done it again and delivered a fine book. A must read for the beach or Vineyard visitors.

5 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2006-07-16

Another intriguing, fun read from author Philip R. Craig. "J.W.", the protagonist in the series, always manages to immerse himself in trouble on the idealic Isle of Martha's Vineyard. Expecially enjoyable is the way "J. W." successfully incorporates his family responsibilities into his sleuthing. This story piques the reader's interest through to the last page!

      Product Description

The inheritance of Illuminati has reformed the world religions into uniformity and syncretism. Hidden safe behind the walls of Temples, Lodges, Mosques, and Churches of the Illuminati Heritage are vessels of the forgotten rituals, the pungent perfumes of hidden bacchanalia and the sweet aroma of secret sacrifices. A Magi must build his Holy Alphabets deep within the Temple of the Serpent's Tongue. The blood of the Templars and Sons of the Widow mesh with the remains of memories and incense smoke, cascading down to a chrysalis of spiritual darkness. The canticles of the Serpent lead us into a labyrinthe wherein Angels have fallen with desire to taste the forbidden fruit. Here at last is that "forbidden fruit". . .the hidden rituals of the Illuminati.

2 out of 5 stars Standard Southern Gothic Romance.......2004-03-06

Anne Whitehead receives a cryptic call from her brother, David, while he is exploring a supposedly haunted mansion named Goldengrove where ghosts sometimes sing at night. Concerned, Anne travels to the mansion to discover her brother missing and a curious assortment of secretive people tied to the mansion's history as well as her brother's disappearence.

Mary Beth Craft's first novel is a rather standard southern gothic romance with a resourceful heroine surrounded by two mysterious men in conflict with one another. You can tell one fourth of the way through the book who the bad guy is and who will eventually win the lady's heart though there are some twists and turns that show some original thought.

A quick rainy night read, fans of the gothic romance genre will only be disappointed that the ghosts spend far too much time off-stage and act merely as unresolved window dressing.

                  4 out of 5 stars Quick read/romantic ghost story?.......2003-10-04

This book is a fast read and a wonderful who done it. I loved how well it read and the mysterious singing ghosts in the old southern mansion:corny but fun. Would be a wonderful movie. Makes a rainy day book.

This literally spells out what's going on in those little brains. Full of great advice on parenting and supporting young learners--and letting your child show YOU how they need to learn. I wish there'd been a bit more about the developing adolescent brain. You can't start reading this book too early.

5 out of 5 stars If You Have Children, You Must Read This Book.......2006-02-24

I appreciated the valuable information about brain development, how children learn, how we can help them, what real education and learning are all about, and the things we do that hinder brain development.
I assigned it to my teens for part of the homeschooling program, and they enjoyed it so much they recommend it to friends, too.

Jane Healy writes well, and she makes a lot of sense. Reading this book also helped us understand why one of our children has some of the learning issues she has. I just can't recommend it highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars Know Someone Who Is Expecting? Buy THIS BOOK!.......2002-11-27

Just ordered another 3 copies of Healy's book (1994 edition). This book was recommended in my doctorate program in education as a MUST HAVE for anyone who is expecting. The suggestions of how to build brain capacity and learning begin while a woman is pregnant, so I've purchased it for all female family members who are now expecting as well as those who have recently had babies. I've also purchased a copy for my elementary school's parent resource center. The information presented in Healy's book presents the transitions of the brain through the school years in a practical, easy to understand manner.

5 out of 5 stars Great for parents of newborns AND older kids!.......2000-06-28

If you buy this book to learn about your baby, plan to hang on to it for many, many years. I have a newborn AND a 14-year-old. Although there was a lot of interesting information concerning my newborn, I learned even MORE about my older child! I really wish I had had this book a few years ago when she was struggling through sixth and seventh grades. I finally understand why she struggled! There were tips in this book that would have helped. This is a book I will try to reread at least once a year because the information is relevant to so many stages in your child's life. It is easy to read, enjoyable and useful. I especially like the bullet points of things to do at the end of each section.

5 out of 5 stars Every parent should read this book!.......1999-03-16

It details in a clear, parent-friendly way the various developmental phases growing children go through and explains why it is so important that they be allowed to go through those phases. I wish this book had been available when my children were young! It makes an excellent gift to give to new parents.

                        5 out of 5 stars A Must for Parents.......1997-07-27

This book is a must given the intense pressure on kids placed by parents and educators on the young nowadays. I have enthusiactically recommend this books to all my friends with young children. The topics on the development of the brains is definitely a good read for parents who are pushing their kids beyond their development stage. Beware that your kids may miss out on developments/experience that will be necessary in the later part of his/her life

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, informative, useful book about child development........1996-05-22

This excellent and easily read book is a "must read" for parents. As a support group leader for 37 home schooling families, I recommend this book as a priority buy for the home library. It gives parents a realistic view of what children are and are not capable of at different stages in their developement. It helps us realize just what our children's capabilities are and how to maxamize our teaching. Dr. Healy's writing style is very easy to read, informative and lively. The chapters are laid out in such a way as to make it easy to find any area of interest. For most of us, motivation is a subject we discuss often. Under "Tools for Learning," she lists "Motivation (pg.190)," and "Ingredients for Motivation (pg. 214). In each chapter, she outlines key information about the subject, for example "Raising Motivated Learners," and "Dealing with Motivation Problems." She gives anecdotal stories to underscore the information she presents, which makes it much easier for a layman to understand. This book definitely impacted not only my teaching style, but bettered my relationship with my teenager. This is an important book to have in your home.

                        Book Description

                        Delicious recipes for the gluten-intolerant.

Gluten is primarily found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. A recent study suggests that one in 250 Americans cannot tolerate gluten. Many suffer from Celiac disease, a digestive disorder that damages the small intestine and interferes with the absorption of nutrients from food. Many others also suffer from food allergies that trigger a wheat or gluten sensitivity. Quite often, the only treatment is a gluten-free diet.

The Best Gluten-Free Family Cookbook features sensational recipes for baked goods, desserts, and main meals -- foods that are typically avoided in gluten-free diets. Here is a sampling of the appetizing recipes:

Accompanying each recipe is a wealth of tips and techniques for novice and experienced cooks alike.

3 out of 5 stars very nice book.......2007-01-10

I briefly looked through this book and then I returned it. The recipes look great. However, I live in a very rural area and have trouble getting all the different flours needed for the recipes.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Gluten-Free Family Cookbook.......2007-01-06

If you are gluten intolerant or wheat sensitive, this is a "must-have" cookbook. I have tried quite a few of the recipes. In almost all cases, the results were a superior, tasty product. In fact, my family, which is not gluten intolerant, prefers the muffin and waffle recipes over traditional wheat products. As a final bonus, the authors have incorporated higher fibre and nutrient dense grains to guard against nutrional deficiencies.

5 out of 5 stars The best for machine bread!.......2006-10-14

I love this book! I needed a bread book. When I decided to omit wheat and gluten, I ordered several cookbooks. My main problem was baking a loaf of bread. I got the packaged mixes, but the taste was all wrong. I tried several recipes on line, but they were written for hand kneading and I have a bread machine lifestyle.
This book lists two recipes for each bread, one for hand kneading and one for bread machine baking! At last! I also liked the clear large print. Nix the "Gluten Free Gourmet Bakes Bread" by Bette Hagman. I listed it to resell on Amazon. The layout and small print makes recipes hard to read and execute, albeit the recipes are good in themselves. "Wheat Free Gluten Free Reduced Calorie Cookbook"'s bread recipes are scattered throughout the book, not chaptered, which was annoying.I liked the soda bread recipes but kept it only because of its easy make, low fat, international gourmet general recipes, not the breads. I also liked a pastry/bread/cake book "Gluten Free Baking Classics" by Annalise Roberts, the recipes were elegant but easy with baking tips (which flour brands are more highly sifted to give a lighter cake). I have been adapting recipes, and use freshly ground flax seed meal for bran and egg whites instead of whole eggs for lower cholesterol breads. Instead of premixing flour blends in cannisters as is suggested, I individually measure one batch plastic bags, so all I have to do is add the wet ingredients and yeast.
Overall, the two books, "Gluten-FreeBaking Classics" by Roberts and "The Best Gluten Free Family Cookbook" by Washburn & Butt are the only ones I need.

5 out of 5 stars Its title says it all - "The Best".......2006-04-03

I can't believe no one has written a review for this excellent cookbook yet. I just finished making the Banana-Pineapple Muffin recipe this morning and couldn't wait to taste them hot out of the oven. I have made several recipes from the authors' previous cookbook ("125 Best Gluten-Free Recipes"), so I know how good the recipes can be. But I was still surprised at how "normal" the muffins looked and tasted. The texture looks like they could have been made with regular flour instead brown rice flour, sorghum, and flaxmeal! I've been baking gluten-free breads and muffins for a year since being diagnosed with Celiac Disease and I have had the most success when using the Washburn & Butt cookbooks. I especially like their bread machine recipes--always tastey. My favorite so far is "Henk's Flax Bread" which tasted like whole wheat bread. I can't recommend this book enough for beginners. And besides the bread recipes, there are loads of recipes for all kinds of meals you can make for the entire family.
