Sujata Massey's lively bicultural series featuring Rei Shimura, the Tokyo antique dealer who can't seem to keep out of trouble, brings her heroine back to her American roots in this engaging tale of corruption and chicanery in the museum exhibition game. Rei is unexpectedly invited to accompany a treasure trove of antique kimonos to a Washington, D.C., museum and to deliver a couple of lectures on the cultural history of the gorgeous garments. A last-minute decision to substitute a priceless wedding kimono for one that's too fragile to travel sets in motion a chain of events that lands Rei in serious peril.

When Rei's former boyfriend, Scottish attorney Hugh Glendinning, turns up at the Washington museum, she's caught up in a romantic crisis, having just settled into a new relationship with Takeo Kayama, the Japanese playboy she met two books ago (in The Flower Master). But that dilemma is soon eclipsed by the theft of the wedding kimono, which was uninsured, and by the disappearance of Rei's seatmate on the flight from Japan. When the seatmate's dead body and Rei's passport and tickets turn up in a Washington dumpster, Rei is suspected of murder, larceny, and even prostitution. Through all this, Massey does a nice job of imparting a wealth of fascinating information on the kimono tradition.

Rei gets more appealing with every outing, and in this one Massey ratchets up the romantic tension and action--maybe because Rei's in a country that's more obsessed with sex than with tradition. Nicely plotted, well characterized, and carefully crafted, this may be Massey's best yet. --Jane Adams

Book Description

Antiques dealer Rei Shimura has managed to snag one of the most lucrative and prestigious jobs of her career: a renowned museum in Washington, D.C., has invited her to exhibit rar kimonos and give a lecture on them. Accompanied by a gaggle of Japanese office ladies bent on a week of shopping, Rei lands in the capital. But her big break could ultimately break her. Within hours one of the kimonos is stolen, and then Rei's passport is discovered in a shopping mall dumpster -- on the dead body of one of the Japanese tourists. Trouble is only beginning, though, for now Rei's parents have arrived and so has her ex-boyfriend. To track down the kimono and unmask a killer, Rei's got to do some clever juggling, fast talking, and quick sleuthing, or this trip home could be her last.

3 out of 5 stars Starts good but ends weak.......2007-10-01

This is my first Rei Shimura novel. I understand that there are several more novels with this same protagonist but I am not sure if I will be picking them up.

The Bride's Kimono starts out with a very good premise. A priceless kimono needs to be transported and the original person to accompany and give the presentation about it cancels last minute. The call for the replacement goes to Rei Shimura, an antiques dealer who half-Japanese, half-Caucasian.

It is after the beginning that the story starts to lose steam. It isn't that the writing is bad because the writing is actually quite accessible. It is a testament to the writing style with its easygoing flow that I was able to finish the novel.

But the characters are a bit on the weak side. Rei, in particular, seemed to get flakier as the novel progressed. Her personal story with the boyfriends was distracting. Her interaction with her mother and father felt like it belonged in a Harlequin Blaze novella rather than this type of novel.

Again, the writing is good in that sense that it flows well and I wasn't looking at the time while I was reading, but the characterizations kept me from getting engrossed.

A decent book but probably worth a look at the library first before committing to buying.

3 out of 5 stars Newbie to the Massey's series.......2006-10-13

This is the first one I read. I've also read Girl in A Box and The Samurai's daughter. I've read them out of order. I really do enjoy them, especially because I am a big fan of Japanese culture and enjoy mysteries.
However, sometimes I feel like I am reading Nancy Drew with a Japanese-American protagonist. Rei is an intriguing character but she doesn't seem like a normal twentysomething woman. I am in my late 20's and I really don't relate to her at all. I wonder how old Massey is. She seems like she is trying really hard to make Rei "cool" by name dropping bands and brands. Rei is so computer illiterate but she has an iPOD? Vintage Talbots? How is that fashionable? The inconsistencies in the book are annoying but not enough to stop me from continuing to read them. Hopefully in order!

3 out of 5 stars Not bad but not great........2006-05-08

Kudos to Ms. Massey for her detailed research into the history of Kimonos. I found it fascinating and well done. If only she had been half as diligent in her research on Washington DC, it would have made for a much more compelling read. For example, there are no video surveillance cameras on the metro, the Asian Reading Room in the Library of Congress only provides Asian language books. Any book in english would have been in the main reading room and it would take quite awhile to obtain the book, etc.

She really seems to work mostly in stereotypes and doesn't seem to provide any real depth to any of her characters. There are so many implausible plot points, many of them that were left unanswered and also leaving us with no clue as to why there were there in the first place. I would elaborate on specific issues but do not want to give away any of the plot. Also, she likes to throw red herrings all over the place, simply for the sake of throwing us off the scent, and not for any real story moving reason. It just got annoying. Finally, when we were heading towards the denouement, it picked up a real rushed feeling and everything was resolved neatly, but not in a way that I found satisfying. The villian was fairly obvious early on despite all her bad red herrings.

I'm going to read another one of her books simply because what she did well in this book was worth giving another of her books another chance. ANd that was her ability to bring Japanese culture to exciting life.

5 out of 5 stars Painful existence of konketsujin=rude for half blood person.......2006-04-27

This 5th volume in the Rei Shimura series has fascinating detail about the many types of kimono, undergarments, appropriate use and the difficulty in dressing.

Rei Shimura 29yo antiques dealer from Tokyo, her blond blue eyed interior decorator mom and Japanese psychiatrist father reaffirm family no matter the complexion amidst murder involving a stolen antique wedding kimono, a Uchikake.

The poignancy of Rei's life as not quite Japanese, not quite American, always feeling misunderstood, demeaned, denigrated for not being quite either is touching.

Her spirited attempts to rebuff both Japanese and American perceived slights, misconstrued interpersonal signals, are all tied to her ethnic identity and expectations confusion. Rei's impulsive gestures of self protection, compassion and passion lead to unintended (usually adverse) consequences, including murder, being mistaken as thief and prostitute.

Rei's emotional intensity, sexuality, strong willed behavior are inherited from a mother who flew in the face of convention to marry a Japanese man. Reserve, a sense of shame when addressed with rude verb forms or appellations not normally spoken aloud, and the need to restore honor, family, security, safety are the legacy of a Japanese psychiatrist father.

Somehow in each book of the series (this is the 5th) the yin yang of honor and shame are played out in the public eye, the murders so notorious that Rei appears in the media misportrayed as a lady of the floating world. On the Asian side one feels her humiliation, shame, on the American side one feels her indignation, anger, desire to do something to make it right. . . an impulse which often goes awry.

The emotions of the half blood children of many wars, occupations, their exclusion from polite society, rejection as appropriate candidates for marriage, are well carved as Rei is abandoned by Scotch boyfriend Hugh in the first book The Salaryman's Wife, and in Bride's Kimono rejected by her boy friend Takeo's family.

For this alone the series is worth examining if you have any interest in the loss of dignity and self which comes from prejudice, subtle or overt.

2 out of 5 stars Forgettable Book with an Annoying Heroine.......2005-07-17

This is the fifth book in the Rei Shimura series and the first I've read. It will also be the last. Massey tries really hard, building the story on the potentially interesting premise of the hero (a young woman of American and Japanese descent) being asked to act as an art courier. She is to hand carry a priceless collection of Edo-era kimonos from Japan to an exhibit in Washington, DC at the (fictitious) Museum of Asian Arts. Of course one of these will go missing, and Rei will need to track it down to clear her name. Meanwhile, there's all kinds of wackiness involving her current boyfriend Takeo (brooding wealthy Japanese hipster playboy), ex-boyfriend Hugh (fancy Scottish lawyer), a dead Japanese girl she meets on the plane, and Rei's parents.

Alas, Rei is an intensely irritating heroine who annoys rather than engages. Sometimes she's smart, sometimes she's incredibly stupid, sometimes she's sassy, and sometimes she's meek, but mostly she comes across as remarkably naive and silly. Indeed, the whole plot is set in motion when she agrees to move from the business class seats she has tickets for, to a seat in economy in order to placate an implausibly rude American. Who gives up their business-class seat on a 14+ hour flight from Tokyo to D.C.? The book is littered with implausibilities like these. Why would she ever sign a legal document she can't read? And are we really supposed to believe that a 30-year-old college-educated woman has zero comfort or facility with computers?

The mystery about the missing kimono and dead girl is passable, though hardly gripping. What's more interesting are some of the cross-cultural details about Japanese culture and etiquette that Massey weaves in (rather clumsily for the more part). However, it's hard to know how accurate they are, because her take on the U.S. side of that is rather strange. Almost every American character is portrayed in a negative light, and while she's clearly done some surface level research in D.C., it's all superficial. A particularly ludicrous example is when Rei is suspected of being a prostitute by county police in Virginia. First of all, the police in that particular county are extremely sophisticated and the premise that they would think she is a hooker is silly. Secondly, their allegation relies upon video from a Metro train. Metro doesn't have security cameras in trains yet (as of mid-2005), only in stations and some buses. Another small throwaway example is when rei wakes up to the hotel radio playing Cibo Matto at 6 AM. Much as I wish otherwise, there is no radio station in the D.C.-area where one will be hearing Cibo Matto at 6 AM, or indeed any hour. Individually, these are minor missteps, but they just keep on coming one after the other.

It doesn't help that there's a whole lot of screwball antics relating to Rei's love life. Her attempt to figure out who she really cares for is laughable, and her attempts to juggle men and her parents is probably supposed to be funny, but falls flat. Her two men are plausible, if somewhat stock characters, but her mother is an entirely over the top piece of work. All in all, I plodded through the book little caring whodunit or why and it would have been a complete dud had there not been some interesting tidbits about kimonos and museum lending practices. But I certainly won't waste any more time on this clumsy series.

4 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air for those who have grown weary of by-the numbers fantasy.......2007-10-04

The Changeling Saga (The Changeling War, The Sorcerer's Gun, and The Magic Dead) literally begins with a bang, as a mobster shoots middle class executive Alan Clark in front of his home. This seemingly isolated event triggers a domino effect that not only changes the life of Clark and his family, but also the lives of the inhabitants of three worlds.

Millennia before the events related in this trilogy, travel and trade between these worlds was common. Due to the evil machinations of several power mad Judges (i.e. wizards) and the so-called High Ones, however, the gates between the worlds were closed. With that closure, the knowledge of the alternate worlds also disappeared - only a select few remain aware of their sister realities.

Even so, interaction between the worlds has not been totally eradicated. For instance, the powerful mage known as the Pale Man has set up shop on Earth as a fixer, intervening in human affairs in return for future favors from his desperate customers. One such favor results in the shooting of Clark by mobster Joe Beast. Unbeknownst to the Pale Man, Clark is the adoptive father of a Changeling, a mystical being born on the world known as The Castle, but secreted on Earth to mature without interference. A young man of great, if as yet untapped power, Brian Clark is destined to play a major role in subsequent events; his spiritual and emotional odyssey forms the backbone of this sprawling tale.

Author Peter Garrison (a pseudonym for veteran fantasy and horror scribe Craig Shaw Gardner) has described the trilogy as "Pulp Fiction meets Lord of the Rings". His stated objective: blending elements of modern day thrillers with those prevalent in the world of fantasy. A tough task, certainly, but one that Gardner pulls off with deceptive ease as mobsters and mages clash. Sporting a huge cast of characters and myriad story lines, the Changeling Saga is rich with memorable incident and teeming with action. It's a curious blend of several genres and styles of writing. In addition to its darker elements, this adventure also contains some deeply humorous moments--in my personal favorite, alien warriors visit Earth and try to blend in by disguising themselves in loud Hawaiian shirts. You have to be patient for these moments, however, as the majority come in the final volume, The Magic Dead; the first two installments are, in hindsight, merely setting the table for the events of the final volume (which itself is open ended, suggesting that sequels are possible).

Although a bit overlong, The Changeling Saga is on the whole a strongly written, well-constructed tale--the juxtaposition of the magical and the ordinary is milked for all it's worth, and its myriad characters are uniformly lively and memorable. Crafted by an accomplished storyteller, this edgy, charming, character-driven adventure rises above mere formula fantasy. Garrison manages to breathe new life in to many stock fantasy tropes, allowing readers to look at them from a fresh perspective--big, daring, often times manic, the Changeling Saga is a breath of fresh air for those who've grown weary of by-the-numbers fantasy.

4 out of 5 stars Second in the Series.......2001-06-06

The Sorcerer's Gun takes us back to the worlds established in The Changeling War. The war between earth and the Castle wages on, with the Pale Man seeking domination on both worlds. Joe Beast and his uncle, Roman Petranova wage their own war against the Pale Man to get back Roman's son, Ernie. Ernie's spirit has been released from his body and now resides in the dead, animated body of a soldier of the Gray. Mrs. Mendeck transport Brian and Joe to the Castle for Brian to further his magical education and for Joe to find his cousin. Eric Jacobson and Summitch continue in the company of a magical being, Gontor, and fight with the Army of the Green against the might of the Gray. We are also introduced to a new, mysterious character referred to as The Growler. This book focuses more on the Castle than it does on the earth, but the earth still plays a large part of the story. The characters are explored and developed a little more as well.

4 out of 5 stars A very Good Second Installment.......2001-04-26

The Sorcerer's Gun by Peter Garrison is the second volume in the Changeling saga that was started in The Changeling War. It picks up right where the first book left us hanging. TSG is just as good as the first book and doesn't let up.

The characters are developed further as we get a closer and more in depth look at the fantasy world of the castle. Some of the book still takes place in our "real" world as it did in the first book, but most of it takes place in castle.

As some mysteries get resolved in this book, more get introduced. The plot grows, but it is still understandable and fun. This series is a great one for both veteran fantasy readers and for first time fantasy readers.

This installment of the Changeling Saga ends like the first, with the reader hanging and wishing for more. The third volume is scheduled for publication in early 2000 so there won't be too long to wait!

5 out of 5 stars Three thumbs up!.......2000-04-07

The idea of multiple worlds is not new, yet Peter Garrison employs this concept with grace. In this second book of the Changeling Saga, Garrison builds on the characters, to let the reader know what position they will take later in the book and the saga. This book begins with the introduction of a new character, Growler, a mysterious being who comes from the Third World. Back on Earth, the Petranova's wage a battle against the Pale Man, aka Mr. Smith, because Smith has taken Roman Petranova's son, Ernie. Ernie's spirit has been sent to Castle while his body stays on Earth. Mrs. Mendeck sends Brian and Joe to Castle so that Brian can learn to become a Maker and so that Joe can find his cousin, Ernie's, spirit. The heroes meet up with a minor deity named Gontor and fall in with his crowd. The story ends as Brian finally meets up with Growler to begin his training.

1 out of 5 stars Dangerously out of date.......2007-08-26

Although the current printing is from 2007, this book was first printed in 1998, the year Viagra came out. Although it covers all the vitamins, minerals and over-the-counter supplements, from gingko biloba through yohimbe to zinc, it does not mention Viagra! It does cover the use of testosterone replacement in detail, but the information is too old to be trusted. Beware!

5 out of 5 stars For me depression was the huge issue.......2007-08-25

For the past year and a half I have suffered from delbilitating major depression. I am 49 and I was being treated with antidepressants with no success whatsoever. I have taken maximum doses of just about everything in the pharmacy and it would have little or no effect on my mood. This wasnt mild depression, it was the most horrible experience I have ever encountered. I couldn't work, eat, sleep, I literally wanted to kill myself and very nearly did. I was seeing more than one physician, had batteries of tests and still no relief. After the most recent episode my regular doctor (an angel) gave me an injection only saying that it was her "potion" and wanted me to call her the next day if I noticed any significant improvement. I had no idea it was testosterone. I had previously had a blood test and it was extremely low (290 as I recall). I think that's lower than normal for a 70 to 80 year old man. In any case, I imagined I was feeling better even before I got home. By the next morning I felt more upbeat, happy, cheerful and motivated than I had in years. I was stunned and just prayed that the black hole wouldnt come back. I called her and she had me come in that day. She explained to me what the injection had been and that it was still not being widely accepted for the antidepressant effects that it is capable of producing.

She is teaching me to inject myself and yes, I will need to be monitored for proper levels and so forth but I am here to tell you, none of that matters. With depression that severe you dont care what it takes, you just want it gone. I understand that it is relatively common among men to suffer from that kind of depression and be unresponsive to antidepressants. If that description fits you, dont walk, run to your doctor and inquire about it. I hate to think of anyone suffering the way I have for so long when the answer may be a painless injection away. I was running out of options with the ADs and was just about convinced that if that was the best I could expect for the rest of my life, it wasnt worth it. I truly believe this therapy has saved my life. Learn about it. This book is a great place to start. Good luck to you all.

5 out of 5 stars Aging, Testosterone, anti-aging medicine, longevity and quality of life.......2007-05-21

Eugene Shippen has done a great service in writing this book. There are many reasons for reading a book about testosterone therapy. Testosterone therapy has gotten a bad press in the past; physicians use it for hypogonadism in aging males and some rarely for post-menopausal females and/or hysterectomy patients; and very few physicians care enough about quality of life issues to worry about the role of testosterone in preserving not just libido but heart health, bone density, vascular integrity, emotional and/or psychological well-being, muscle retention, endurance, strength, etc., and even preventing the wasting away that accompanies AIDS.

Urologists often repeat false or questionable claims when counseling patients about testosterone therapy: "It's controversial," "Testosterone is just 'fertilizer' for the prostate," "Testosterone increases the risk of cancer," "Testosterone won't help an aging male dealing with ED if the problem is 'mechanical', etc., etc." Similar questionable claims are made when gynecologists counsel female patients about either estrogen therapy or androgen-estrogen therapy.

At least Dr. Shippen has some counterarguments to offer, based on some credible scientific studies.

Not many physicians are putting the anti-aging concerns of patients into a perspective that allows them to make intelligent choices about hormone therapy. For example, that Proscar and Avodart block DHT might mean at the very least one would need a pharmacologist to sort out the issues related to choosing which trade-offs are most important when deciding whether to treat prostate enlargement with these drugs while taking testosterone.

Read this book along with Ray Kurzweil's "Fantastic Voyage" to get a different and more wholistic approach to aging. These books are must-reads for men and women who care about quality of life issues that are not being addressed by medical practitioners too narrowly focused.

But, before one thinks that hormone therapy is just a quality-of-life issue, one must look at all of the data relating to how hormone therapy can be used to treat depression (the common cold of mental illness), mood swings, bloating, obesity, heart disease, high cholesterol, hypotension, poor circulation, etc.

Books like Dr. Shippen's are for patients who want to work collaboratively with doctors to treat diseases and avoid the resulting ravages therefrom.

        5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-05-18

I loved this book. I've been thinking about HRT/TRT for awhile now and this book is a must-read for anyone who wants to know the benefits and how to do it the right way.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for men over 40.......2006-01-20

This book is highly recommended reading for both men and women who are entering their "menopause years". It provides a very easy to follow explanation of the role that a proper balance of hormones (including, but not limited to, testosterone and estrogen) play in the health of both men and women. Diminishing amounts and improper balances of hormones during the onset of "middle age" are major factors in our health and vitality, including stamina, strength, physical fitness and (of course) sexuality. I became aware of this book while reading "A Private Diary: Our First Year in Swinging" by Jerry Moore. Mr. Moore disclosed his own personal reduction in stamina and sexual performance, which was corrected through hormonal modulation as described in The Testosterone Syndrome, as well as that of a number of others encountered within the Lifestyle community. Many men tend to accept their declining sexual performance and overall health as an inevitable part of aging. Doctor Shippen's book is a must read for men nearing 40, arming them with knowledge of what is happening to them and of the alternatives available to them if they choose to do something about it. "The Sexy Years" by Suzanne Somers, aimed at women on this same topic, used Dr Shippen's book as one of her sources for research and quotes him throughout her book.

                  Book Description

Most Westerners think of Japanese cooking as a difficult art requiring special, hard-to-find ingredients and the mastery of complex and time-consuming techniques. In her thirty years of teaching Japanese cooking to foreign residents in Tokyo, author Keiko Hayashi has proved these assumptions wrong. She has become a master at simplifying difficult traditional Japanese cooking procedures without compromising taste or appearance, and of explaining the use of Japanese ingredients and finding readily available Western substitutes. Simple and Delicious Japanese Cooking contains more than one hundred recipes, all of which are easy to follow, kitchen tested, and presented in full color. The recipes are categorized into hors d'oeuvres, soups, seafood, chicken and eggs, meats, vegetables, rice noodles, and desserts. In addition, the author offers four seasonal menus. She also explains traditional Japanese cooking utensils and techniques and provides an exhaustive guide to basic ingredients. Simple and Delicious Japanese Cooking is the perfect introduction to one of the world's great cuisines.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Cookbook by a Fabulous Cookbook Author.......2005-03-19

I LOVE Keiko Hayashi and have enjoyed her cookbooks for almost 20 years! In fact, I'd have to admit, she taught me how to cook Japanese (wa-shoku).

Simple & Delicious certainly lives up to its title and is a delight for the eyes and the palate. My only request, Ms. Hayashi, is to provide some sympathetic substitutes for those hard-to-find Japanese ingredients, so Westerners can still complete your wonderful recipes.

Thanks for spreading the joy of great Japanese cuisine.

5 out of 5 stars Simple & Delicious Japanese Cooking.......2001-05-25

This is a fabulous cookbook. It's the best I've found on Japanese cusine. Beautiful photos generously illustrate recipes as well as preparation techniques. An added delight is the illustrated index of ingredients and utensils. But the recipies are the best part of all. They are superb in taste yet not difficult to prepare. This wonderful book lives up to its title!

5 out of 5 stars Super photos and descriptions.......2000-02-16

There's a delicious color photo of each recipe, and even the typically Japanese ingredients needed are photographed and described at the end of the book. The method of preparation is clear and simple, and the book really makes you feel confident of spectacular results.
