BONE COLD IS AN EXCELLENT READ.......2007-08-23
THIS WAS A GREAT BOOK, I REALLY ENJOYED THE CHARACTERS AND HOW THE BOOK FLOWED. THE ONLY THING I HAVE TO BE DISAPOINTED IN IS THAT SHE DOESNT CONTINUE ON WITH HER CHARACTERS..
Decent book.......2007-06-04
A fairly good thriller. Although, I had it figured out way before the end.
It was a decent book. I'm going to give this author another try.
a nice suspense story.......2006-07-05
This was the first book by Spindler that I've read. I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy it or not. The reviews I read at B&N.com were up and down. It ended up being a decent enough book. Nothing fabulous, but definitely readable.
The story is mostly a suspense with a bit of romance on the side. That was a bit of a negative for me. I like the romance aspect to be more prominent. Anna and Quentin barely interact for the first 225 pages of the book. I would have liked them to connect more quickly. Aside from that, there was a good chemistry between them, but the overall relationship was left a little undeveloped. They ended up together, but I wanted more scenes between them, scenes that weren't all about the situation, so that they could get to know each other a little.
Since this was mostly a suspense, the plot was a huge part of the story. It was a pretty good plot, twisted and complicated. Spindler does a good job casting suspicion around. In a way it was a little obvious who had to be involved because otherwise, there was no reason for the character to be in the story. At the same time, she makes someone else look guilty enough that you wonder. She also works in subtle details/clues really well. You read things that seem so innocuous but then later they make so much sense. It was interesting to piece it all together. The end reason for the murders and how it all took place was a little typical...a situation that was often used by writers as it grew in notoriety. Still, it was interesting. Overall, I liked the plot.
Soo....good enough book. I've read better, but it was a good read.
Rating: 3.5 / 5
Highly Predictable.......2006-02-02
I don't want to spoil the story but I had all of the important plot and some of the not so important plot points figured out about a quarter of the way through this book. Meaning that I knew who the bad guy was, I mean who he truly was very quickly, and knew exactly how the rest of the story would turn out by the end of the first 100 pages. The language is corny, stereotypical characters, and an incredibly predictable plot. I like mysteries and supsense stories but don't reveal the entire plot so quickly. There was also something off about a mystery writer writing a story about a myster writer, wow what a stretch of the imagination.
Bone Chilling and Exciting!.......2005-10-14
Erica Spindler does one thing extremely well and that's keeping the reader constantly guessing. She winds a fast-paced story through several subplots just to make sure she has captured everyone's attention. I'm sure those not encapsulated don't have a pulse because she's incredible. She writes a tale that keeps you turning pages as fast as you can until the very end only to catch your breath and realize you immediately want another of her books to read.
Harlow Grail is the young teenage daughter of an actress and wealthy plastic surgeon. Her life is privileged and she lacks for nothing. That comfortable life changes to horror when she's kidnapped. Timmy, the son of the Grail housekeeper, is with her and also becomes a victim since he can identify the captors. When Kurt, the kidnapper, discovers that the Grails have contacted the police against his warnings, he suffocates Timmy and cuts off Harlow's pinkie. She miraculously escapes when she realizes he will soon kill her too. Her missing pinkie is a constant reminder throughout her life of this ordeal and the loss of her friend.
Twenty-three years later, Harlow Grail has changed her name to Anna North. She lives a new life in which no one knows her past. New Orleans is the home for this renowned mystery writer and she likes the secluded life she leads. All is well until Anna's mother tells the press that Harlow is alive and well in New Orleans with a new identity. People start putting two and two together and the trail leads to Anna.
Soon after, murders begin to occur. When one victim has her pinkie sliced off, Anna begins to think Kurt has found her and is coming to kill her. Quentin Malone, homicide detective and hunk, is assigned to the case and meets Anna. Romantic sparks soon fly and the reader is tossed from a romance theme to a psychological thriller and back again. Malone and his partner must try to protect Anna and the best way to do so is find the killer before he finds her, if he is Kurt.
Spindler excels at either her research of New Orleans or she has visited/lived there. Her vivid descriptions of various places make the reader want to visit. Even the description of the foods can make your mouth water! I'm not sure if it's research or she shares some of her favorite places with us in this book.
Another thing that makes Spindler outstanding is her fast paced storyline. She develops characters to which the reader can relate. And each of these characters is likeable - I found myself drawn to Anna. I found myself wanting to shake her mother for slipping and telling the world where her daughter is living and all but giving them her new identity. I found myself smiling at Quentin and cheering him on. Yes, they are definitely characters in which the reader can relate! Spindler then lays out a story line that you happily follow along and then WHAM she tosses in a neck wrenching twist. I felt like I had whiplash at times but it was the most enjoyable whiplash I've ever endured.
Bone Cold is definitely a story that will keep you up at night. This needs to be added to your list of Must Read books. It will make you an Erica Spindler fan!

Loved it!.......2003-05-22
I have had this book on my bookshelf for years, and occasionally go back to it to re-read. It is a well written fantasy full of characters with depth to them. It portrays Neanderthals in a new and interesting way. It runs the gammut of human emotions and motivations. I recommend this book to all.

Customer Reviews:
Useful, but Flawed.......2007-05-09
"Before the Change: Taking Charge of Your Menopause" by Ann Louis Gittleman explains how to control your Menopause symptoms by changing your diet. There are two parts to the book: Part One is called "Alleviating Symptoms" and Part Two is called "The Changing Diet". The book starts with a list of Perimenopause symptoms and a quiz to see if you are in Perimenopause. The book covers topics such as how to curb carbs, vitamins and minerals, natural hormone cream, exercising, and safe estrogen replacement therapy. There are also several case studies in the book. The Changing Diet Plan Section also includes several recipes. A major part of the book is ten remedies for Perimenopause symptoms. Gittleman calls these remedies "All-Star Peri Zappers" and they include: Flaxseed oils and ground flax seeds; black currant seed oil; multivitamins and magnesium; zinc; natural progesterone cream; exercise; destressing stress; adrenal refresher; hesperidin; and natural estrogen replacement.
"Before the Change: Taking Charge of Your Menopause" is a good book for women who like to try and control their Menopause symptoms, especially through diet and nutrition. Gittleman is a nutritionist and the book mainly focuses on how women can use nutritional therapy for Menopause symptoms. There are several useful lists in the book including a list of symptoms caused or made worse by estrogen dominance; a list of Perimenopause symptoms caused by magnesium deficiency; and a list of symptoms of hypothyroidism. There is a very helpful quiz designed to figure out if you burn food fast or slow. The case studies are very interesting. The recipes were also very useful, as where the natural quick fixes for Perimenopause symptoms. What I especially liked about the book is that the lists of symptoms and case studies show that Menopause is a real, but controllable part of life.
While I found the book to be helpful for the most part, there were a few things I didn't like about it. Gittleman spends a little too much time promoting not only books she has written, but several times she'll say that only one product will work effectively and gives the brand name. This happens so often I was beginning to wonder if she was getting a commission from the companies. Her chapter on exercise, an important element in controlling Menopause symptoms, is extremely short and doesn't really explore how important exercise is for aging women. Her suggestion to wash food with a combination of Clorox and water seems extreme, to say the least.
"Before the Change: Taking Charge of Your Menopause" is a useful, but flawed book on Menopause.
You will refer to this book for years.......2007-02-10
I bought the first edition of this book after seeing Ann Louise on Dr. Phil. It was exactly the time I experienced my first overt symptom of perimenopause; however, I learned that I had been experiencing the symptoms of lowering progesterone levels for at least five years. SO many things were explained! Since I bought the book, I have referred to it several times when confronted with additional perimenopause symptoms and have implemented Ann Louise's recommendations. No, not every perimenopause symptom hits at once--it's a lengthy progression and every woman seems to be different. No, you're not going crazy--read the book.
Before the Change: Taking Charge of Your Perimenopause.......2007-02-08
Great book from a nutritional standpoint. Helpful in the arsenal of understanding hormonal changes. However, the organic diet is a little unrealistic for the average person's everyday living. Would recommend as a resource guide.
Menopause Symptoms???.......2007-01-09
This is a great book for all of you ladies out there that are beginning to have menopausal symptoms. Remarkably, symptoms sometimes start in your 30's and if no one tells you that it may be early (Peri) menopause, you begin to make trips to the doctor to relieve the symptoms - this book gives you an alternative to HRT - vitamins, healthy eating and exercise. I keep this book close by at all times even though I am well in menopause. In fact, I've purchased two books and loan one out to my girlfriends when I find out they're suffering also.
This book was a God send for me..........2006-03-07
I am 45 years old and perimenapause hit me like a ton of bricks last September. After a lifetime of being a "happy go lucky", positive and upbeat person, I suddenly felt extremely anxious, depressed, had difficulty sleeping through the night, suffered from night sweats, migraines, and was basically an emotional wreck. I felt like I was going crazy. I still have monthly cycles, but they have become much milder. Anyway, I went to see my doctor and he put me on anti-anxiety and sleep medication which made my condition much worse. After talking to some friends about natural remedies, I decided to do some research and found Dr. Gittleman's book. Just changing my diet alone (getting rid of the "bad carbs" and eating protien at every meal) made a tremendous difference in the way I felt. I am taking the supplements and the oils, along with the progesterone cream and I am feeling more and more like my old self every day. In response to the person who wrote about the diet not being enough to "feed a hamster", once your body adjusts to eating protien vs. bad carbs you find that you do not need more than what the Dr. recommends for serving sizes. I cannot tell enough women in their 40's about this wonderful book! It's at least worth a shot before taking hormone replacement!

Customer Reviews:
Very helpful for first time mom.......2007-07-25
I have found this book to be a wonderful resource since I started making food for my baby 4 months ago. The info and the recipes are great and making food for my baby has been a lot of fun and very rewarding.
Am I the only person totally confused by this book?.......2006-06-17
I just dug through my baby cookbooks looking for a recipe for crackers. I made one out of this book, it called for honey. So, I assume because there's no warning on this recipe, that honey must be okay for under a year when it's baked, right? Wrong, it's not. Why is it that out of the five baby food cookbooks I own, not a one of them does an adequate job of explaining the theory behind waiting to introduce certain foods? Infact all the books I own have different introduction schedules! So, I'm just completely confused. And now that I've fed my baby honey I'm irritated as well.
The recipe is good though, my preschooler and I like it.
Wow! Beyond My Expectations........2006-01-31
This is a great book. As a nutritionist, I did not look at the facts this book poses about baby food manufacturers and the benefits of breast feeding as lecturing. The truth may be hard for some to grasp, but lets face facts--baby food/formula companies are in business to make money. They are not in business for the best benefit of the baby. Those are two things they do succeed at....making money while providing a substandard product--and to think they want us to feed our children substandard food items while trying to take our hard earned money. I was fairly sure they would not get our families hard earned dollar before reading this book, but after reading it, they definitely will not get it.
I feel more determined to make sure our daughter eats only what mom and dad eat--nutritious whole foods--which only makes sense, right? If you are not all about convenience foods this is the book for you to read.
Healthy Babies & Healthy Families.......2005-09-08
This is an awesome book. Most people don't realize how easy & how much better it is for your baby to make your own baby food. It is soooo much cheaper than the jarred junk too!!
A bit outdated.......2005-09-05
This book decrys the baby food industry for all of the sugar, salt, additives, and preservatives that go into the food. While it might have been so in previous decades, I think baby food companies have made tremendous strides in their food. However, I do make most of my baby's food because I think it is more nutritious and he likes it better so the book does have some good recipes.

Book Description
Newly revised for the 1990s, The Baby Cookbook is the final word on infant nutrition. In addition to hundreds of wonderful recipes, it includes vital new information on vitamin requirements, allergies, childhood obesity, nursing, introducing solids, and balancing meals. It also features all the facts on the health benefits and risks of milk, eggs, salt, fluoride, and complete and incomplete proteins.
The Baby Cookbook also includes the author's personal journal of experiences feeding and raising her own baby. Knight's journal takes some of the fear out of raising a baby by showing parents what to expect (and beware of) in feeding their own infants and toddlers.
And, of course, there are the recipes. All of the more than 250 recipesnearly 100 of them new for this edition -- have been designed to be low in sodium, contain almost no sugar, and generally encourage good eating habits.
Best of all, most of the meals in this book can be shared by the whole family. There's Chicken Fricassee, Seafood Chowder, Cheese Enchiladas, Baked Potatoes with Salmon Sauce, Barbecued Ribs, and much, much more, including Homemade Apple Pie. We are not talking strained peas.
The Baby Cookbook is a complete guide to cooking for your family -- from ovens and stove tops to microwaves and crockpots. Finally, it's possible for working parents to prepare quick and easy meals for their children without sacrificing taste, variety, or nutrition.
Customer Reviews:
I returned this book!.......2002-02-09
I am glad that I received "Mommy Made and Daddy Too" before this book, or I may have actually taken Knight's advice on how to feed an infant. It seems that she introduces foods too fast (i'm not a doctor). Something very disturbing is that from 6 mos to 12 mos she writes "each meal should be accompanied by nursing, formula, or milk". I have seen nowhere else that cow's milk is acceptable three times a day instead of formula or nursing. I also didn't like the diary. It wasn't a true diary in that you didn't learn how she introduced foods to her daughter. Instead you saw a meal every now and then and something about how she taught her daughter to sleep in her crib by letting her cry herself to sleep. Not my kind of mothering all around!! I also question whether many toddlers would eat cold avocado soup or shrimp with almonds.
Interesting food.......2001-09-17
The recipes in the book are very interesting and a good change from the bland food usually given to babies. I am Asian and I eat a lot of spicy food. This book has given me a way to introduce my baby to the kind of food we eat at home, like curries for example.
Against medical advice!.......2001-06-04
As a practicing family physician, with a spouse who is a nurse, I was shocked at the advice given in this book. Many of the recommended dietary additions go completely against the accepted standards of the American Academy of Pediatrics. For example, whole milk and cottage cheese are recommended by the authors at a far too early age. I returned it immediately and would not recommend it.
The Baby Cookbook, Tasty and Nutritious Meals for the Whole.......2000-12-31
This book is awful. Just about every recipe requires shopping at a specialty store for ingredients. Also a good portion of the book is taken up with the diary of the author's daughters first 2 years of eating which wasn't very informative. If you are looking for simple, typical supermarket ingredient recipes look someplace else!
A cookbook I keep out all the time!.......2000-11-11
I found this book 8 years ago when my first baby was just getting ready to try eating. I checked out a dozen likely-looking books from the library. The rest went back, but this was renewed until I bought my own copy. I devoured this book! The nutrition information was very helpful for me in general, the suggested order for introducing foods was something I practically memorized, and a great help especially with my baby who turned out to be allergy-prone. The diary was a nice break from all of the information, more of an anecdotal resource. It also helped to give me an idea where the author was coming from and how to put foods I wasn't used to into an everyday setting. The recipes are astounding - simple to make, wonderfully healthy, tasty for the whole family, and there's a little bit of everything in there. I've tried new foods from these recipes and been encouraged to re-do some of my own recipes with a more healthful eye. I've given away several copies and bought my most recent when my latest son arrived. He's 2 now and I still pull this book down for ideas 3 or 4 times a month. I can't imagine feeding a baby without this book - it's the best I've read! I cannot recommend The Baby Cookbook highly enough!
