"If a ghost is seen, what is it interests me less than than what sees it?" Thus Algernon Blackwood describes his fascination with human beings' ability to sense invisible powers and stirrings in the universe, a fascination he developed most famously in his stories about mystical, ineffable encounters with nature. This collection, selected by renowned scholar of the supernatural, E. F. Bleiler, is an excellent sample of Blackwood's work, including 12 of his best ghost stories and a crime story as well. Blackwood is acknowledged today as the author who made the ghost story into a respectable literary form.
Book Description
13 great stories by foremost British 20th-century supernaturalist. "The Willows," "The Wendigo," "Ancient Sorceries," others.
Customer Reviews:
Some excellent tales, but also marred by some quite mediocre ones.......2007-10-06
This was my first book by Algernon Blackwood, being the first book in my venture to expand beyond HP Lovecraft, and some of Blackwood's reputation as a master in his genre is certainly warranted. The three tales in the book that really stand out as memorable and excellent, in my opinion, are "The Willows", "The Glamour of the Snow" and "The Wendigo". The first one being so famous that little description is necessary, the second being a very dreamy tale about a love encounter between spiritual man and Nature, and the last one being an intense tale from the wilderness of Canada, where the hunters become the hunted. There are other tales of note here too, of course, but none of them are even close to the calibre of these first mentioned. The mediocre or merely "good" tales included are the following; "Secret Worship", "Ancient Sorceries", "The Other Wing", "Ancient Lights", "The Listener", "Accessory Before the Fact" and "Max Hensig". All of these tales have literary qualities above average, and some of them come quite close to being memorable tales, but all of them are marred in some way by various flaws.
The few tales included that are void of any note are the more standard ghost tales in the book, and admittedly, a subgenre which I'm not so fond of; "The Transfer", "The Empty House" and finally "Keeping His Promise". These tales appear to me dated, and even though they will appeal to many, they were not to my taste.
So all in all a difficult book to rate, since some of the tales are pure genius, like the genuinely scary "The Willows" and "The Wendigo", but which with the addition of lesser tales including the fact that the book is of very poor quality print-wise, with cheap paper and covers that won't last much more than one read, makes me take away a star.
To summarize; decidedly worth its cheap price for the Blackwood-novice, and containing much reading pleasure.
Best Book of Modern Ghost Stories from the 20th century........2006-12-05
This is simply the best collection of 20th century ghost stories, you'll ever have the pleasure to read through. What amazed me the most ,was that Mr.Blackwood may have helped plan the Lindbergh kidnapping.Blackwood enjoyed the writings of Swedenbourg and the friendship of Hilarie Belloc.Yet,i have found no direct connection of him to Ford Maddox Ford. One has to wonder.Did they unleash the ghosts on the hamlet of Hopewell? At any rate,if you want a high degree of excellent supernatural stories, then this book will serve you well.-Beware of Sleep,Beware of Cats!
Pulls You Right In..........2006-07-12
Each story starts slowly but by ten pages in, you will be hooked each time. The Willows is a masterpiece, and the Wendigo is great also. SUSPENSE is the key here. Blackwood was a true artist. Each sentence is perfection- there is no filler! If you are impatient, this book may not be for you. Otherwise, read and enjoy!
This book will mess with you.......2006-01-25
Wow the stories in this book are all time classics. Algernon Blackwood was obviously well traveled. He definetley had a strange/odd perspective of Life, that would never come to mind for me, and he is able to put that to paper. The stories will haunt you well after you put it down!
unearthly powers & ancient presences.......2004-07-23
Algernon Blackwood's stories capture an elemental and unearthly atmosphere of ancient presences and powers and are pervaded with a subtle and potent mysticism. Highly recommended.

Book Description
In his introduction to this collection, Arthur B. Reeve asks "What is the fascination we feel for the mystery of the ghost tory?" He's got a lot of thoughts on the question, of course. But you know, in he end, an aficionado can know a lot more by looking at who wrote the stories -- and this volume contains a great list, including Algernon Blackwood, Ambrose ierce, Brander Matthews, Daniel De Foe, E.F. Benson, Edward George Bulwer-Lytton, Ellis Parker Butler, Leopold Kompert, M.R. James, Rudyard Kipling, and incent O'Sullivan.

A Delightful Diversion.......2007-03-26
Mathemagics is a delightful diversion. Anyone who enjoys puzzles, games and mathematical wizardry will get their money's worth with this amusing book.
People who have no mathematical abilities whatsoever, and experienced number crunchers alike, will find something to their liking in this book. Even if you don't wind up looking like a genius, this book will help you distinguish between real genius and those with just a few clever tricks up their sleeves.
Awesome book!.......2005-01-28
After seeing Dr. Benjamin perform in Las Vegas at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics conference in 2002, I bought this book and also his Mathemagics course. My middle school students love it! Many of them prefer to do mental calculations when possible and they love when I do mathematic magic tricks on them. Better, they love the algebraic explanations and can't wait to use the tricks on their friends and family, knowing that they can explain the trick as well.
My college students are amazed when I can square a 2-digit number quicker than they can punch it in on a calculator. (I'm not too fast at the 3 digit numbers; it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks!)
I highly recommend this book for math teachers, school libraries, students, or anyone at all!
One path to learning mathematics.......2003-03-10
Ambivalence surrounds me when I attempt to review this book. As someone who learned arithmetic in the pre-calculator days, many of the ideas in this book bring back deep memories. One of my favorite things to do when in my teen years and later was to keep track of the items in the grocery cart and estimate the total cost. It was considered a failure when the guess and true total differed by more than $0.25. While this skill did succeed in amazing people, I cannot recall a single instance where it actually was financially beneficial. And eventually I gave it up, going on to mathematics and computers.
But those days are gone, and calculators (computers) do free the mind for other things. So the question becomes, is it beneficial to read books of this type and learn the "lost" art of estimation? The history of mathematics informs us that early mental manipulation of numbers is a strong indicator of the future development of mathematical ability. Gauss and Hardy are two excellent examples of this. However, in later years Hardy in particular looked down on those who were mere number crunchers.
Which leads to the clearest use for the techniques demonstrated in this book, namely to instruct children in the mental manipulation of symbols. By having young minds compete against a calculator, mental techniques are developed that most likely cannot be created any other way. And those methods are excellent training for future careers in the quantitative sciences. And this book does an excellent job in introducing these "tricks." All are clearly explained and detailed solutions to the problems are in the back of the book. Anyone wishing to learn how to perform efficient mental computations will find what they are looking for.
If your goal is to teach or learn how to perform calculations in your head, then this book is for you. However, one should make an effort to keep everything in perspective. The ability to perform mental arithmetic should be considered as a step toward mathematical ability and not a stand-alone indicator of such skill.

Not bad.......2007-08-24
There are lots of good problems in here, but many times the instructions are poor so you arrive at solutions which are valid yet don't use the trick they are trying to get you to use. Some of the solutions are downright wrong, again because they fail to use proper instructions and correct terminology. Still, it's good for the brain, and there is some good stuff in here.
May have mistakes?.......2006-11-29
My nephews have this book on their shelf. Being a math graduate student, I flipped it open to see what's inside. It looks interesting, and certainly has some cool stuff.
However only after 5 minutes, I ran across this (keep in mind composite numbers are numbers which are NOT prime):
"Are there ever 1,000,000 consecutive composite numbers?"
I know it's true by an abstract algebra theorem. I was curious how they would explain it to a young adult reader. This was how:
"The answer is an emphatic yes. THe 1,000,000-term sequence 1,000,001+2, 1,000,001+3 all the way up to 1,000,001+1,000,001 consists entirely of composite numbers, becuse 1,000,001+K is always evenly divisble by K for any K in this range."
Firstly, I'm pretty sure you can check online to see there are lots of primes between 1,000,000 and 2,000,000. In the second place, their assertion about divisbility is ridiculous. According to that statement, 1,000,001+2=1,000,003 is divisible by 2.
I honestly don't know how many spots there are in the book that are this way. Maybe I just got lucky finding this one question.

Good light reading.......2006-05-30
This is an excellent example of fun, light reading that doesn't take itself or its genre too seriously. In this amusing book, a warrior and her daughter from another space/time place have taken up residence in Austin, TX so that the girl can get a solid education. The mother has a nice math teacher boyfriend. The two of them take on villains from the other dimension, people from a science fiction writer convention, romance novel characters, and (shudder, whimper) school bureaucrats. I gather from the reviews that some folks don't care much for this book, but I found it charming. I recommend it for a vacation book; a day of light reading; a pick-me-up when depressed.
What's with the math?.......2005-07-10
Sure a Laplace transform should move people around, but it is not the inverse of a Furry-R transform (that should turn people into furry animals).
Mathemagics is pretty good........2001-11-20
Okay, so the characters are a little uni-dimensional, and the storyline kind of meanders, but aside from all that it's a pretty good book for light reading. I liked the subtle in-jokes about popular science fiction that Margaret Ball threw in. Some of them sailed clear over my head, thanks to my not being a rabid reader of hard sci-fi, but the ones I got had me chuckling out loud. I like Reva Konneva's live-in boyfriend Dennis and his brainy (instead of brawny) heroics and the fact that he's got a huge collection of science fiction books. I like the fact that Reva's daughter Salla is such a precocious and spunky little kid who can do just about anything with an enchanted Palm Pilot and three spare minutes. And for all their one-dimensionalness, every one of the characters is pretty darned unique. For example, Reva's friend, mother of an ADHD child, who takes it all in matter-of-fact stride on discovering Reva is a warrior woman from another dimension. Or the ADHD child (my apologies to Ball, I cannot for the life of me remember his name at the moment -- was it Jason?? -- sorry, it's been a while) who notices everything when he's off medication and consequently is able to provide Reva and Salla with crucial clues to stopping the evil bad guys. Or Reva herself, tough, no-nonsense, and naive all at the same time, who takes it as a compliment when a bunch of knife-wielding thugs try to jump her (key word here is 'try') in her own living room.
One thing that pulled the book down, however, was an odd attempt to bring more serious matters to light with an underdeveloped child sexual harassment subplot. It's a serious issue, but the rest of the book was so light and fun that that part of the story was really out of place. Aside from that, everything was fantastic.
I picked up this book because I'd read the short stories about Reva Konneva in the Chicks 'n Chainmail series and I thought the book version would prove to be as interesting. I didn't expect any greater depth or a huge amount of development; I just wanted a bigger dose of Reva Konneva and her unique perspectives on the Planet of the Paper-Pushers. I was looking for light humor, fun characters, fairly simple solutions to complicated problems, and great entertainment. And that's what I got! A+
Very 2D.......2000-11-01
I found these books to be OK, apart from the horrible characterization. Everyone was so blandly drawn... Good guys were Good, badguys were very Bad. The idea of a villain being primarily a censor was a good idea but the author didn't have to throw in incest, felony, cruelty and evil into his figure; that way he becomes just another cardboard villain. Most censors are decent but slightly narrow-minded citizens who see a legitimate danger but go the wrong way or too far in trying to curb it. This way the censorship idea gets lost in a pile of other bad qualities.
The books also weren't as light-hearted as the short stories... if there's more with these characters I hope their better done.
Subtle As A Sledgehammer.......1999-12-14
I had high expectations for this book after reading Ball's short stories with the same characters in the 'Chicks in Chainmail' series of anthologies. That's probably why I felt so betrayed. The Riva short stories are fun to read, lighthearted romps. This one isn't any of those things.
You've got good guys: Riva, the warrior woman who commutes to Austin from another dimension for the good schools, her daughter, her teacher boyfriend. And you've got bad guys -- her wizardly ex, various bad teachers, and a Fundamentalist preacher who wants to remove pretty much everything from school textbooks. You don't have to hang around pondering who the good guys and bad guys are. The good guys have no faults, except the occasional low self-image. The bad guys, on the other hand, have no virtues. Ever. The fundie preacher especially. About midway through the book, with no motivation, he's revealed to be a felon.
It's certainly true that incest is a particularly disgusting crime which deserves public awareness and concern. However, making it the latest rubberstamp marker for villains -- the modern equivalent of twirling moustaches and tying maidens to railroad tracks -- is not a good way to raise consciousness. Especially in a book billed as light comedy, and especially when minimal contact with a fantasy universe makes the problem completely go away like, well, magic. Parent and student problems with public schools are handled with only slightly more tact and understatement. There are a few fun scenes which hark back to the short stories, but you have to sit through a lot of preaching (in the secular sense) to get to them.

Five stars!.......2007-09-10
Living where "cancer" is an everyday word has made me perhaps a bit sensitive when I hear it in the real world and how it is being used. I was pleasantly surprised by this book as not just another soother. It actually touches reality. Makes cancer real and beatable. It makes you realize you're not alone, that there are resources out there as well as information available if you take the time to read it. This book has a great summary of everthing and I recommend it to my newly diagnosed patients. We need more realistic books about cancer, not just ones that gloss over it.
Thank you to Greg Anderson. Well done.
For Cancer Patients, Not Caregivers.......2007-09-04
I bought this book after my husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer, hoping that it would give me guidance on important issues I need to address. I was disappointed that this book did not meet my needs. The book could be helpful for building hope and self confidence for patients, but as a caregiver, I found it useless.
Very Helpful.......2007-08-31
I researched many books when I was diagnosed with cancer and this book was the BEST. IT is like my bible, it has helped me so much to stay focused on being positive and looking for the best.
Great Cancer Information.......2007-05-12
This book is great for anyone diagnosed with cancer or who has a loved one with cancer. It deals with how to handle the situation and things to do to deal with the cancer. I recommend this book.
Best book on cancer.......2007-05-06
Of all the books I was given, bought or borrowed since I was diagnosed with cancer, this is my hands-down favorite. It is easy to read, based on one of the most extensive informal studies of survivors and, most of all, leaves you with a feeling of hope. First of all, many of the books just made my head spin - particularly when I was recovering from surgery and doing chemotherapy. This one is presented in short, powerful, easy-to-read sections that you can jump into for a few minutes every day and think about for weeks afterward. Second, it is based on real experience and deep knowledge of diverse approaches. After being given 30 days to live, Greg did what every cancer patient wants to do, he started talking to survivors. More than two decades later, he has interviewed more than 15,000 survivors. This book distills the wisdom from these interviews. It addresses conventional medical treatment, but also nutrition, exercise, support, belief and spirituality (things that your doctor may never talk to you about). It addresses issues that range from the big questions about the message of the disease to very practical approaches to reducing nausea or deciding what to eat. Finally, while most literature on cancer makes you feel confused and overwhelmed (How can you possibly do all this? Should you?), this one offers simple, authentic, actionable steps.
Customer Reviews:
This book paved the way for my recovery........1999-09-27
I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was devastated. A friend, a 10 year breast cancer survivor, brought this book to me. I wrapped it in a paper book cover because I didn't want anyone to know I had cancer. I read the book and it changed my life. I took most of the 50 suggestions to heart and I am a survivor. I highly recommend this book for all people who have a diagnisis of cancer.
Excellent and also Greg Anderson's book The Cancer Conquerer.......1999-01-31
I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer Stage 3+ and given 6 months to live. That was five years ago. My daughter, a nurse, bought both of these books for me which I read with voracity. I also turned to prayer and positive thinking. I am still here, doing fine and trying to instill hope in others.
Easy to read and reference-covers all aspects-mindbodyspirit.......1998-08-28
Of all the books I bought or was given after my diagnosis, this is the one that I connected with. It is written in a language anyone can understand. It is not frightening rather, empowering. I can't believe that I am now ordering my 12th, 13th, and 14th copies because sadly, I give them as gifts when someone I know is diagnosed. Too many - but Thank God we have Greg!
Guiding and comforting...When you first get the word..Cancer.......1998-01-16
My cancer happened so fast and before I knew it, I had a lung removed. After I came out of the hospital, I bought this book and it has really helped me in dealing with the stages of the disease. I highly recommend it to anyone who learns they have cancer and/or any friend, relative, spouse etc., of someone who does. It will help in their journey to survival. Buy this and read it as soon as you know of the cancer and read it again and set up the wellness journal.. It will help...I guarantee it...
Truly an essential for those wishing to out-live cancer........1996-07-06
Hearing the doctor say, "It's cancer," is a devastating
experience. Greg Anderson shows a proven plan, based on the
actions taken by hundreds of cancer survivors, for
recovering from the devastation--and the cancer! From
gaining the vital understanding that having cancer does not
automatically mean dying (no matter WHAT the doctor said!)
and knowing the difference between statistics and you, to
taking effective charge of your conventional medical
treatment, to harnessing exercise, diet, meditation and the
joy of living to effect your healing, "50 Essentials" is a
practical manual for living a great life and fighting to
become cancer-free.

When chef Louis Lanza opened Josie's in New York City in 1994, he created a new breed of restaurant. Since then, this smart-looking eatery serving dairy-free food has been crowded with both health-conscious, food-loving yuppies and more mature and mainstream diners pleased by the comfortably sophisticated menu. In Totally Dairy-Free Cooking, Lanza explains that he avoids using dairy products to cut back on fat and cholesterol. Also, it helps people with allergies and other health problems. To ensure you get sufficient calcium on the dairy-free diet he espouses, Lanza provides a chart demonstrating how easy it is to get the all the calcium recommended by health authorities by eating green vegetables, grains, tofu, and other foods.
Lanza is a broadly talented chef. He prepares a wide range of dishes, creating novel choices and giving new twists to familiar favorites. His Spinach Salad is enhanced with ginger and roasted beets--add the marinated tofu or not, as you prefer. Margarita Chicken Paillard, marinated with lime juice, tequila, and Triple Sec, is sure to be a classic for grilling. Or try the Yellowfin Tuna Burger, enlivened with soy sauce and sharp wasabi. Less expectedly, there is Hummus-Crusted Salmon with Cucumber and Tomato Salsa, the hummus topping the fish made with black beans.
Meatless dishes are hardly bland in Lanza's hands--witness his creamy, puréed mushroom soup, seasoned with tarragon, and Baked Corn Macaroni with Soy Jalapeño Jack, studded with sliced zucchini. To ensure best results for cooks unfamiliar with dairy-free cooking, he lists specific brands of ingredients he favors. Most are organic and can be found in supermarkets as well as at natural food stores. In all, Totally Dairy-Free Cooking provides nearly 200 recipes, from fish and chicken dishes to meatless choices that are easy to make even when a bit off-beat. --Dana Jacobi

NOT totally dairy-free.......2003-09-17
I asked for this book after seeing it on Amazon and was sorely disappointed when I got it. As we say in Texas, all hat, no cattle. I am allergic to casein and can't eat half the stuff in it. It looks great, but the title is *totally* misleading. I've gotten more mileage out of Beth Kidder's "Milk-Free Kitchen" and a nutritionist's "Lactose-Free Cooking." If it were truthfully titled, I probably would have been more favorably impressed.
Looked at in a store & didn't buy.......2003-03-06
I am allergic to milk and am always on the lookout for new cookbooks. I spent some time looking through this one in a kitchen store recently and decided not to buy, mainly because of the use of non-dairy cheese in many recipes. Yes, these cheeses are good for the lactose-intolerant, but they are not good for anyone allergic to milk. All of the good ones contain casein, a protein in milk that is often the cause of allergic reaction. There are truly milk-free cheeses out there, but they do not tend to melt well, and, therefore, often can't be used successfully in cooking.
I'm disappointed that someone who writes a book like this would title it "Totally Dairy-free" when it's not. "Non-dairy" or "Lactose-free" would be more appropriate.
That said, it was a nicely presented book and had some recipes that looked really good.
This is an Awesome Cookbook!.......2003-01-03
I have had this cookbook for awhile. Unlike most cookbooks - these recipes have been tested very carefully. There isn't a bad recipe in the book. You will be amazed at how excellent everyting tastes. I am a recent dairy-free convert. And I can honestly say this book has made the transition for me very easy because the food tastes so great. You will not miss dairy after you try these recipes.
Incredible book!!!.......2002-11-08
I bought this book almost 2 years ago, and I cannot get enough of Louis' recipes!!! It is so obvious, to me, that each one took a lot of time and tasting in development!! Every time I want to knock someone's socks off with a dairy free recipe, I make something from this cookbook. Louis Lanza is truly a genius!!!
Last week I tried the Pumpkin seed, Basil, and Miso Pesto for the first time...UNBELIEVABLE!!!
I love this book........2001-02-21
I began living the Total Health Makover way just over a year ago. This is a plan for healthy eating and living based on book written by Marilu Henner. Because of this I already have a kitchen stocked with many of the ingredients needed for this cookbook. Examples are, mirin, soy margarines, milks, and cheeses, balsamic vinegar, and lots of spices. So, when I read through the recipies in this book I have almost all the ingredients on hand. That makes it easy for me but if someone is eating what I would call the "unhealthy - dairy - red meat" way you will have to do some pantry upgrades. The book is not vegitarian. There are great recipies for seafood and poultry. That said, I love this book. The recipies are for the most part simple, wonderful, and very flavorful. Mostly made with lots of spices and soy products but not really exotic ingredients that would be hard to find. I just sit and read through the book and I want to cook everything at once. I used to hate to cook but now I love preparing fresh whole food meals for my family. My boys like it because they are still eating "normal" food like macaroni and "cheese", quesadillas, and chicken. The book also calls for natural sweetners instead of sugar. So may vegitarian cookbooks will call for weird ingredients and to much sugar. If you want to prepare hearty, flavorful food that any down to earth family will love GET THIS BOOK.
