have to disagree.......2007-01-18
I devoured all of the "Swords" novels. I read them about ten years ago and just recently re-read the entire series. Saberhagen does a wonderful job with weaving in and out the tales of all the swords and their powers.
Not much better than previous volume.......1999-09-30
Saberhagen does it again. Yet another boring, pedantic story with as little dialogue as possible. The dust jacket claims these are best-selling books so someone must like them. Not me.

Good information.......2007-08-15
This is a really good book for anyone starting out on their alcohol free life. It's easy to read and has some humor too. I recommend this book.
Cult Propoganda.......2007-03-12
The truth is that a newly-sober alcoholic named William Griffith Wilson -- a down-on-his-luck former Wall Street hustler who put on airs of having once been a prosperous stock broker -- just sat down, in December of 1938, and wrote up twelve commandments for the new religious group that he and fellow alcoholic Doctor Robert Smith had started. Those commandments were simply a repackaged version of the practices of a cult religion that was popular at that time, something called "The Oxford Group", or "The Oxford Group Movement", and later, "Moral Re-Armament" -- a religious cult that was created by a deceitful fascist renegade Lutheran minister named Dr. Frank Nathan Daniel Buchman -- a nut-case who actually praised Adolf Hitler and Heinrich Himmler.
Bill Wilson described the writing of the Twelve Steps this way:
Well, we finally got to the point where we really had to say what this book was all about and how this deal works. As I told you this had been a six-step program then.
The idea came to me, well, we need a definite statement of concrete principles that these drunks can't wiggle out of. There can't be any wiggling out of this deal at all and this six-step program had two big gaps which people wiggled out of.
Notice how Bill Wilson considered his fellow alcoholics to be a bunch of cheaters who will "wiggle out of this deal" if they can get away with it -- which Bill won't allow.
And note how Bill Wilson made himself the leader who was entitled to dictate the concrete terms of other people's recovery programs.
Also notice how Bill Wilson considered 'spiritual development' to be a business deal, with a contract that you can't wiggle out of, something like selling your soul in trade for sobriety.
Nowhere in the Twelve Steps does it say that you should quit drinking, or help anyone else to quit drinking, either. Nowhere do the words "sobriety", "recovery", "abstinence", "health", "happiness", "joy", "love", or "love", appear in the Twelve Steps. The word "alcohol" was only mentioned once, where it was patched into the first step as a substitute for the word "sin" -- Bill Wilson wrote,
"we are powerless over alcohol and our lives have become unmanageable",
instead of the Oxford Group slogan,
"we are powerless over sin and have been defeated by it".
And then the phrase "especially alcoholics" was patched into the 12th step as a suggested target for further recruiting efforts:
"...we tried to carry this message to others, especially alcoholics"...
(But regular non-alcoholic people were still fair game for recruiting into Bill's "spiritual fellowship"...)
The Twelve Steps are not a formula for curing or treating alcoholism, and they never were.
The Twelve Steps are not "spiritual principles" and they never were.
The Twelve Steps are cult practices that work to convert people into confirmed true believers in a proselytizing cult religion, just like Frank Buchman's so-called "spiritual principles" did.
1. The Twelve Steps do not work as a program of recovery from drug or alcohol problems.
The A.A. failure rate ranges from 95% to 100%. Sometimes, the A.A. success rate is actually less than zero, which means that A.A. indoctrination is positively harmful to people, and prevents recovery. Some tests have shown that even receiving no treatment at all for alcoholism is much better than receiving A.A. treatment:
One of the most enthusiastic boosters of Alcoholics Anonymous, Professor George Vaillant of Harvard University, who is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc. (AAWS), showed by his own 8 years of testing of A.A. that A.A. was worse than useless -- that it didn't help the alcoholics any more than no treatment at all, and it had the highest death rate of any treatment program tested -- a death rate that Professor Vaillant himself described as "appalling". While trying to prove that A.A. treatment works, Professor Vaillant actually proved that A.A. kills. After 8 years of A.A. treatment, the score with Dr. Vaillant's first 100 alcoholic patients was: 5 sober, 29 dead, and 66 still drinking.
(Nevertheless, Vaillant is still a Trustee of Alcoholics Anonymous, and he still wants to send all alcoholics to A.A. anyway, to "get an attitude change by confessing their sins to a high-status healer." That is cult religion, not a treatment program for alcoholism.)
The A.A. dropout rate is terrible. Most people who come to A.A. looking for help in quitting drinking are appalled by the narrow-minded atmosphere of fundamentalist religion and faith-healing. The A.A. meeting room has a revolving door. The therapists, judges, and parole officers (many of whom are themselves hidden members of A.A. or N.A.) continually send new people to A.A., but those newcomers vote with their feet once they see what A.A. really is. Even A.A.'s own triennial surveys, conducted by the A.A. headquarters (the GSO), say that:
81% of the newcomers are gone within 30 days,
90% are gone in 3 months, and
95% are gone at the end of a year.
That automatically gives A.A. a failure rate of at least 95%. But the GSO does not count all of those people who only attend a few meetings before quitting -- they don't qualify as "members". (That amounts to "cherry-picking".) If we included them, then the numbers would be much worse.
First there is the propaganda technique of "everybody's doing it": "AA or a similar Twelve-Step program is an integral part of almost all successful recoveries".
That is a complete falsehood. The vast majority of the successful people recover without A.A. or any "support group". It's what "everybody" is doing.
Then they use the propaganda techniques of use of the passive voice and vague suggestions: "It is widely believed that not including a Twelve-Step program in a treatment plan can put a recovering addict on the road to relapse."
It is widely believed by whom? And what do those unnamed people know? What are their qualifications? Are they doctors? Medical school professors? Or salesmen for a 12-Step treatment center? Why should we care what some unnamed invisible fools allegedly believe, anyway?
The authors also use the propaganda technique of fear-mongering: you will be "on the road to relapse" -- you will probably die -- unless you practice Bill Wilson's Twelve Step cult religion.
And then the fluff-headed Pollyanna attitude is outrageous: Just going to the wonderful A.A. meetings is supposedly all that is needed to fix some alcoholics.
But since A.A. has a zero-percent success rate above and beyond the normal rate of spontaneous remission, that cannot possibly be true.
A great aid for sponsorship.......2007-01-09
In an effort to give back something to the Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous, I devote a good deal of time to sponsoring newcomers. This sponsorship relationship is aimed -- primarily -- at helping the newcomer work the 12 Steps of the program. This excellent book -- on the shelves of many, many sponsors -- is aimed at helping the newcomer in those critical early days. Loaded with tips, suggestions, and just plain comment sense about how not to pick up that dangerous first drink. A wonderful assistant to the sponsor helping the newcomer.

Phenomenol Book.......2006-07-20
Incredible little book that I discovered when I first got sober. Practical suggestion for daily living without a drink. This book was exactly what I needed when I began my life transformation. Highly recommended for anyone that desires to live a day at atime without a drink.
Living Sober.......2006-06-27
This book has great, practical suggestions on dealing with situations and feelings that are troublesome for alcoholics. It does not "preach" or talk down to the reader. Every AA meeting should make this book available!

hard to find edition.........2007-04-27
Book was shipped quickly. Not in great shape, but not bad for used. This is a hard to find reference book for anyone in recovery. I gave it to a friend in Substance Abuse counseling.
Important book.......2004-02-06
Important book on recovery. Well-written and it helped me a lot.
5 years and I'm still sober!!!.......1999-08-04
I don't know if I could have gone sober without this book. It has changed my whole life and I am extremly thankful. My marriage would have been over if not for sobriety. Because of my sobriety my husband also quit, he says he never could have done it had I not done it! And he has Hepatitis C, he can't afford to drink. It would kill him.

Sober Faith.......2007-10-05
Payton Skky Series2, very good book, love it's story, well written and leaves you satisfied to continue on to the next chapters. Highly recommended.
Great Book for Teenagers.......2007-05-31
Mrs. Moore does it again. She has written another outstanding book in a series that makes you look forward to reading the next one. Originally I brought this book for my pre-teen daughter because she read all the books in the "Carmen Browne" pre-teen series. I read this book first and decided it was not for pre-teens. The story lines are too mature for her now. Because the stories are true to life and well written, I plan to save them for her to read later.
Mrs. Moore has an excellent way of addressing real life issues and demonstrating how young people can make God honoring choices in each situation. How refreshing to read a quality book.
4.5 Out of 5 stars!!!!!!!! great book.......2007-04-30
I could totally relate to this book. Even mmore, because this takes place in the Georgia-S.Carolina area, anD that's where i live!!!!I just finished it today!!!!!! it was great. i wont spoil if for you but plz go out and read it. if your not sure then first read it from ur library(like i did!)
I gave 4.5/5 because there were some words/phrases I didnt quite understand, but that is probably because im 12. ;)
I cant wait to read Stephanie's other books
Great Inspiration to both young and old christian women.......2007-04-24
This book was even better than the first and I can't wait to get copies of the rest of the series. A great read for young christians and older ones as well. Buy it for your daughters...they will love it.
Life Changing.......2005-07-09
When I got the 1st book of the Payton Skky Series(was a gift!) I didn't read it right away, but when I did I was truly blessed and had to read them all! A lot of the choices Payton made were poor ones that could have easily been stopped if she used her head, for instance, telling Tad the truth about her date with Dakari to the prom. Tad truly had to have been sent from God because everytime she messed up he always forgave her.I really wish Stephanie Perry Moore wouldn't stop at book 5 of the series and continue ministering to my life because as Tad is a blessing to Payton she is a blessing to me!

inspiration for dieters.......2007-04-22
An inspiring little gem of dietary inspiration straight out of the 15th century. Like the self-help gurus of today, Cornaro tells his "born-again" narrative of a youth spent eating and imbibing, followed by warning signs of the dire consequences of his gluttony, followed by a personal transformation into a paragon of self-discipline and sobriety. A quick and enjoyable read when the cravings for bonbons threaten to overwhelm.
a book everyone should read for their health.......2003-09-16
This is an excellent book. If you truly want to improve your health you will be diligient about the food you consume. Their is much truth to: You are what you eat..Perhaps reading this will cause you to rethink how you approach food.

sweet satisfaction.......2007-01-17
This cookbook is great and the recipies are really easy to follow. The Turtle Cake is awsome. I am looking forward to trying each recipie, specially the holiday cakes.
Great for no fuss baking.......2007-01-10
I received this book as a gift and absolutely love it. It makes baking simple and uncomplicated. Baking from scratch is good for some but most of us do not have that kind of time. This book allows for great tasting and great looking desserts such that no one would guess you took a shortcut.
Betty Crocker cake mix cookbook.......2006-09-20
This is an excellent book as the instructions are written in a clear concise format. Recipes include a variety of desserts--cakes, cookies, breads, and special occasion cakes for birthday, Christmas, and other holidays. Even the novice cook would benefit from this cookbook as I believe these are "never fail" recipes which is a good boost to the beginning baker! Tips are also given at the beginning of the book to make sure the baker has all the information he/she needs as well as a consumer Q & A section is given.
Cake Mix Doctor MUCH Better!.......2006-08-07
Many of these recipes are -follow the instructions on the box- and do something cute with the finished product: cut in pieces and make a bunny cake,a sailboat cake, a butterfly cake, a computer cake, etc., or add food coloring and make a rainbow cake. I was expecting more RECIPES.
Fun for Families.......2005-11-01
If you are relatively new to cake decorating, or want to make something a bit unusual for your family, this book would be a useful tool. It features cake recipes for use with boxed mixes, recipes for frostings and glazes, and recipes for cookies, pies, cheesecakes, and other desserts, as well as some decorating ideas.
I would rate the decorating ideas in the neighborhood of the Family Fun cake decorating book. They are not amazingly difficult or complicated, and they don't require a lot of special tools. Some of my favorites are the 3D sand castle cake, reindeer cupcakes, and ballet slippers carved from a sheet cake. There aren't any fondant designs; most use frosting and/or other edible accents. If you are used to looking at the Wilton yearbooks for decorating ideas, this book is some relief, because it shows you ways to carve and shape cakes without purchasing a bunch of specialized pans. One down side is that several of the cake designs described in the book do not include photographs. Another is that only two sections of the book are dedicated to decorated cakes--the others are more traditional, with mostly frosting or glaze coverings and possibly some fruit or nuts for garnish.
The recipes are great for their sheer variety. Sections include Bake and Take (my favorite here is the S'mores cake), Wonderfully Indulgent (I want to try the Peanut Butter Silk and French Silk Hazelnut cakes), Special Celebrations, Heavenly Holidays (the candy cane cake is a cute idea), Come for Brunch, Scrumptious Desserts (includes cheesecakes, tarts, and baked Alaska cake), Cookies and Bars, and Frostings and Glazes.
I think cake mixes can be a great foundation for delicious cakes, but some of the recipes I've tried from this book haven't been too exceptional. The chocolate turtle cake was only okay, and the cherry-chocolate chip cake wasn't as good as I'd hoped, either.
Still, this book has a lot to offer. The add-in ingredients aren't difficult to find, there are recipes for a variety of tastes (mandarin orange to grasshopper fudge to caramel carrot to lemonade cakes), and cakes appropriate for diverse occasions.
I liked the tips for each recipe that suggest variations, and the diagrams for assembling shaped cakes are clear and well-done. I admit I also liked the nostalgic bits--a brief history of Betty Crocker's 50 years, and inset photos of some advertisements over the years. The book also provides helpful general recommendations for successful baking.
I think Betty Crocker also publishes another book focused on decorating that provides more photos (and some identical photos) of the designs outlined in this book. I think I remember seeing a photo of the sailboat cake, for example, in that edition, but this book only includes sailboat cake directions and a diagram. Still, between the two, I would recommend this version, simply because the variety of the recipes and general baking tips are more useful than the designs, which are cute, but not anything you couldn't design yourself with a little experience and imagination.
