Book Description
Among the towering red cliffs and the ancient ruins of Petra sits the corpse of Mrs. Boynton, the cruel and tyrannizing matriarch of the Boynton family. A tiny puncture mark on her wrist is the only sign of the fatal injection that killed her. With only twenty-four hours to solve the mystery, Hercule Poirot recalls a remark he overheard back in Jerusalem: "You do see, don't you, that she's got to be killed?" Mrs. Boynton was, indeed, the most detestable woman he had ever met.

Appointment with Death.......2007-03-14
Mrs. Boynton sorrowfully reached her "appointment with death" sooner than usual in Agatha Christie's enthralling book. The twisting plot and realistic characters keep you on the edge of your seat as you wade deeper into the unpredictable story. Agatha Christie's magic has once again weaved its way into one of her finest stories, Appointment with Death. Everyone is on their feet cheering the Belgian detective, Hercules Poirot, as he uses his "little gray cells" in order to determine not who would kill Mrs. Boynton, but who would not kill this old, cruel witch.
The characters, although not my favorite part of this book, were unlike any I have ever read about before. Mrs. Boynton a cruel, power-hungry, old woman is hated by everyone in this enriching plot. She is a failure with a thirst for power that is fed by bossing around her family. Everyone has a reasonable motive for killing Mrs. Boynton, especially her "devoted" yet unhappy family. Hercules Poirot is the other main character in this book. He is possibly the most important. He is a Belgian detective who is extremely proud of two things, his mustache and his "little gray cells." He sets out to examine the suspicious circumstances and bring the clever murderer into the spotlight.
Murderers on the run with a brilliant Belgian detective hot on the trail... plots don't get much more exciting than that. This is the exciting plot expressed in Agatha Christie's Appointment with Death. The captivity faced by Mrs. Boynton's family, and the prospect of one of the family being the horrible murderer is almost too much to bear. One of the great things about the plot is that the emotion displayed pulls you into the story. This plot was so unexpected and complex that I was kept guessing as to the murderer's identity until the very end. The only way to truly express the feeling put into the plot is to say that Agatha Christie's light shines again.
The only thing in this book that thoroughly disappointed me was the setting. It did not take away from the rest of the book, however, it did not add "wow" factor to the story. I felt like it was a normal everyday setting and that is not what I was looking for in Agatha Christie's book. The setting helped make the whole story more believable, but most mystery lovers are not looking for a realistic, believable book. Instead they are looking for an exciting thrilling book. I felt that Agatha Christie did not live up to her name with this setting.
Appointment with Death was, overall, a thrilling mystery book. I was thoroughly delighted with Agatha Christie's effort and felt that her feelings showed throughout it. The plot and characters added a breathtaking "wow" factor that kept me up all night reading this book. The setting, although not bad, did not contribute anything unique to the book. Overall, it was a great book for mystery readers of all ages. Agatha Christie has done it again, creating one of the world's finest mystery stories.
Above Average Agatha.......2007-01-04
Above average. Interesting family dynamics with the classic matriarch.
A definite for Agatha fans; top 25% for others.
Fan of female mystery writers.......2006-08-04
Although this is not my favorite Christie story (hence, the 4 stars instead of 5), I still loved listening to it. I think Hugh Fraser (Captain Hastings) does a superb job as reader.
Can't Poirot EVER get some time off?.......2004-05-18
Hercule Poirot has decided to take a vacation to the Middle East. One his first night in Jerusalem he overhears a bit of conversation - "You do see, don't you, that she's got to be killed?" He assumes that he has heard two people collaborating on a book or play, smiles to himself as he muses that crime seems to follow him everywhere. Of course the conversation comes back to haunt him as he again crosses paths with the speakers.
This is another of Christie's dysfunctional families, this time the problem parent is the mother instead of her usual tyrannical father. The Boynton family consists of Mrs. Boynton, grossly overweight, in poor health and whose chief occupation is to torment her family. She has three adult step children, Lennox (married to Nadine), Raymond and Carol and her own daughter, Ginevra. While on an excursion to Petra Mrs. Boynton dies leaving the question of natural causes or murder as the cause. If it is murder was it committed by one of the family or another member of the group?
Poirot is consulted by a local offical to sort out the mess which of course he does but not without suffering the hardships of the desert - so hard on patent leather shoes!
This 1937 novel is one of Christie's 'psychological' mysteries where much time is spent on motive and character development. The result is that by the end of the novel the reader feels personally acquainted with many of the characters. Also this is set in the Middle East where Christie spent much time herself and gives the novel an insight on the area and travel in those times. It is an excellent mystery, all clues are fairly laid out for the reader to sort out and still quite enjoyable and challenging nearly 70 years later.
Tyrannical woman dies.......2003-12-29
Mrs. Boynton is one of Agatha Christie's most memorable characters. She is an absolute tyrant who rules her family with fear and the possibility of losing her financial backing. She does not allow them to have contact with outsiders and even arranges a marriage for her oldest son when he seems inclined to seek out a bride. In a departure from the norm, Mrs. Boynton suggests a trip to Jerusalem and brings her family with her. They are accompanied by a family friend, two physicians, two ladies, and Hercule Poirot. Poirot overhears two of the adult Boynton children plotting to kill their mother and he uses this evidence as a beginning to investigate the eventual murder of the old lady. Everyone has a motive, as Mrs. Boynton was rude and obnoxious to everyone she met, so this case takes all of Poirot's deductive powers to figure out the actual murderer. This is classic Christie and as such it is one of the best Poirot books in the series.

"A bright red scream" is how one of the subjects Marilee Strong interviews in this chilling yet compassionate study of self-mutilation describes the sensation of intentionally inflicting pain upon oneself. It is a compulsion that, while shocking and bewildering to most people, affects 2 million or more Americans and countless others around the globe--one of whom, the late Princess Diana, also suffered from the eating disorders that characterize between 35 to 80 percent of all cutters. Rejecting the classic psychiatric wisdom that views self-mutilation as a species of suicidal behavior, Strong links the phenomenon instead to the will to live--often in the face of such overwhelming childhood abuse that the resulting dissociative behaviors are something akin to posttraumatic stress disorder. Strong touches on other issues as well: Why are most cutters women? And is the current fascination with tattooing and piercing, from its most extreme forms in the "alternative" culture to its growing mainstream acceptance, a sublimation of the cutters' instinct? Through interviews with more than 50 self-injurers, Strong tells the moving story not only of their rage and self-punishment, but also of the courageous journey towards reintegration. (The book also contains an introduction by psychiatrist Armando R. Favazza, author of Bodies Under Seige, one of the leading clinical experts on self-mutilation.) --Patrizia DiLucchio
Book Description
In "an impressive compliment to Mary Pipher's. . . Reviving Ophelia" (Booklist), an award-winning journalist explores one of today's most misunderstood phenomena--self-mutilation
Self-mutilation is a behavior so shocking that it is almost never discussed. Yet estimates are that upwards of eight million Americans are chronic self-injurers. They are people who use knives, razor blades, or broken glass to cut themselves. Their numbers include the actor Johnny Depp, Girl Interrupted author Susanna Kaysen, and the late Princess Diana.
Mistakenly viewed as suicide attempts or senseless masochism--even by many health professionals--"cutting" is actually a complex means of coping with emotional pain. Marilee Strong explores this hidden epidemic through case studies, startling new research from psychologists, trauma experts, and neuroscientists, and the heartbreaking insights of cutters themselves--who range from troubled teenagers to middle-age professionals to grandparents. Strong explains what factors lead to self-mutilation, why cutting helps people manage overwhelming fear and anxiety, and how cutters can heal both their internal and external wounds and break the self-destructive cycle. A Bright Red Scream is a groundbreaking, essential resource for victims of self-mutilation, their families, teachers, doctors, and therapists.
"A compelling tour of the trauma and science of self injury. . . Richly reported and achingly well-written." --Time
"A Bright Red Scream has the hallmark of a classic work on a topic that [is] impossible to ignore." --The San Diego Tribune

Eye Opening.......2007-08-12
THis book reveals the struggle for those unable to express their emotions by any other method. It gives great insight as to how to be supprotive and helpful without judging.
Some questions, and answers, on self-mutilation.......2007-04-06
A reference to this book in a novel I recently read led me to seek out this book for myself.
Many of us will know someone who has self-mutilated. Some of us will have direct experience. Each of us will wonder 'Why?' This book sets out, in a clear easy to read way the views of some professionals. It also sets out, in a clear and non-judgemental fashion, the experiences of some self-mutilators. In seeking to explain, it neither condones nor condemns.
In my view, the book has two primary audiences:those who seek to understand and those who seek to explain such behaviours.
If understanding is the first step towards healing for some, then this book may well provide a welcome step.
Highly recommended to those who seek to understand what is generally seen as either inexplicable or attention-seeking behaviour. In my experience, it is generally neither.

excellent- recommend.......2007-02-01
As a pediatric nurse practitioner working with teens, I have seen the increase in self-injury over the last couple of years; most common is cutting. Strong does a tremendous job of conveying the feelings and emotions that I often hear the girls and boys I care for reiterate. With a section by Dr. Favarro who has done countless studies and publications on adolescent cutting, this book is highly recommended for any practitioner trying to learn more their patients, parents trying to understand why their child is self-injuring, or anyone who is interested in the world of self-mutilation. Thank you Ms. Strong for a commendable resource on SI.
Boring..........2006-04-12
I've been cutting myself since I was 14, now I'm 24. I'm currently writing my own book about self-injury and personally I felt this book was boring. I pushed myself to continue to read it and by the end of the book it ended up being just another book on my shelf.
I wouldn't recommend this book to people, self-injurers or non-self-injurers.
I believe the stories that were told within the book had a lot of the same storyline. I would've liked to have read different types of stories. The majority of the stories were about those who were abused. Not every self-injurer was abused. Some just had troubling pasts like myself that weren't able to cope with life.

Powerful and informative read.......2006-02-14
this book was recommended to me by a patient who struggled with self-injurious behavior. i thank him to this day and have recommended the book to numerous patients and parents of adolescents who self-mutilate. this book is a graphic and eye-opening depiction of the epidemic that self-mutilation has become. notions of self-injury as strictly "attention seeking" are outdated, and this book explores the origins of self-mutilation, its reinforcing value for the injurer, and ways in which sufferers have conquered this seemingly compulsive behavior. it's also a great resource for friends and family members of those who self-injure, as it sheds some light on the inner workings of these individuals and can, thereby, create increased understanding and empathy for the psychological and emotional struggles that underlie self-mutilation. though self-mutilation can be seen as a very primitive behavior, it's expression can be very complicated and not easily understood by those who have never felt such intense emotionality. this is a highly recommended read. as others have noted, however, this book is not for the faint of heart. i also appreciated conterio and lader's book entitled *bodily harm: the breakthrough healing program for self-injurers.*

Café au Lait Cheesecake with a Mocha Crust.......2007-02-02
Molly O'Neill's New York Cookbook is a celebration of the New York Food world. She is the food columnist for The New York Times Magazine and spent five years working on this amazing book. The first recipe I tried was "Katie's Café au Lait Cheesecake with a Mocha Crust." The ingredients looked delicious with cinnamon and chocolate wafers for the crust and a rum and coffee flavored filling. I made it for Easter and everyone was very impressed.
Since the author is a food columnist I knew she would be selecting winning recipes and so I felt confident enough to make the recipe for a big occasion without even trying it out at least one time for myself. I was very pleased with the results and can recommend the recipe to you for any occasion.
Whether you are interested in trying lots of new recipes or you just enjoy reading cookbooks, the New York Cookbook has so much to offer. Page after page of delicious information mingle with the even more delicious recipes. Some of the fun recipes include:
New York Penicillin - a chicken soup made by Aunt Marie Stacey. This stock/soup is then used in a variety of recipes and is very easy to make.
Irish Soda Bread - Make two loaves of bread in no time at all.
Simple Fresh Tomato Sauce - The perfect sauce for pasta made with fresh tomatoes, onions, garlic, oregano and a little brown sugar.
Shrimp Fried Rice
Shish Kebabs
Meat Loaf
Rosemary Chicken
Chicken Paprikas
Pan-Fried Sole
Yoko's Japanese Salad Dressing
Marrakesh Carrots
Some of the sweet treats include: "Coney Island Fudge" made with cream and semisweet chocolate, "Zoe Morsette's Oatmeal Macaroons," "Aunt Olga's Cardamom Cake," and "Katharine Hepburn's Brownies." If you love ice cream, you may want to try out the recipe for Hot Fudge Sauce and Butterscotch Sauce.

A Nifty New York Cookbook.......2006-11-10
As a native New Yorker, I consider this a classic ... wonderful anecdotes and recipes from a vast array of people who live in the city. Molly's affection for the city is evident (her brother, Paul, played for the Yankees), and her knowledge of both food and the city makes this cookbook a gem.
New York Cookbook: From Pelham Bay to Park Avenue, Firehouses to Four-Star Restaurants.......2005-08-02
Cooks Magazine recommended this cookbook as being very authentic. I bought it because of their review. They were absolutely right. The recipes are original/authentic New York complete with history and original photos. It's a great read even if you never make any of the recipes.
I highly recommend this book.
Good but some recipes are hit or miss.......2005-04-19
This book has the best spaghetti sauce recipe --my husband and I loved it--it was a way to bring NY cooking to Hawaii since there are not many good italian restaurants out here like in NY, which I miss. On the downside, not all recipes were good. For ex, I did not like the Madison Square burgers nor did I like the Pad Thai noodles (I tried recipes from Keo or Cooking light for Pad Thai which were better). I will try some more recipes from this book and hopefully will have better luck.
A great guide to NYC restaurants, and shopping.......2005-02-03
New York Cookbook is a witty, chatty book capturing the essense of New York City through it's unique food culture. There are over 400 delicious recipes from eateries famous, and not so well-known; plus mini-shopping guides to various New York neighborhoods such as Bay Ridge, Chinatown, Flushing, Greenpoint, Arthur Avenue, Hell's Kitchen, and Jackson Heights. Note, the book was published in 1992, and some of the shops mentioned in the book have either moved, or have gone out of business. nevertheles, this book is a great resource. rkchin. http://www.nychinatown.org

Not too helpful, meals seam pricey and when your runnin calls it can be hard to let something cook for hours and hours like some of the recipes.

Book was a gift for my 16 yr. old son.
Interesting ideas, easy to use.
A fun book, with lots of great recipes.......2001-11-23
This wonderful cookbook has 150 recipes drawn from firehouses from all 50 states. It has everything from main courses, to side dishes, to desserts. My one complaint against this book is that is it organized by area, rather than course, but that's a very small complaint. In between, there are chapters on firefighting in America, firehouse cooks, and systems of cooking in firehouses.
Overall I thought that this was a fun book, with lots of great recipes. I really liked the Chicken and Dumplings from page 110 (of the 2001 hardbound edition), and the Coffee Cake from page 77. I highly recommend this wonderful cookbook!
150 Mouthwatering Recipes from All 50 States.......2001-09-06
This is "no frills" cooking at its best! If you're looking for regional, family recipes that are easy to prepare without compromising taste, this book is for you. All of the recipes were tested in the Better Homes & Gardens kitchen, and Kite cleverly gives us ingredient amounts for family-size or "firehouse" portions--no calculations needed while your hands are coated in flour. Recipes range from regional dishes like jambalya, enchiladas, chowder and spaghetti to meat loaf, banana pudding and one of my favorites, "Potato Dish from Truck Co. No. 2." This is not just a cookbook. As wife of a veteran fire training officer and firehouse chef, Kite weaves throughout, a brief history, quips and tales of firefighting and dedicates the book "to the honorable members of our society who keep watch over our lives and property every hour of every day--the firefighters."

Love This Cookbook!.......2000-03-29
I originally borrowed this cookbook from the library, but we used it so much, I just had to own it! Lots of great recipes that are low fat w/o sacrificing flavor. I have many cookbooks, but I keep coming back to this one for everyday meals! Highly recommed this cookbook--we love it!
Excellent lowfat cookbook.......2000-01-14
The recipe's in this cookbook are easy to follow and taste great. They are geared up to cook at the firehouse, as most of the recipes are for either 4 or 8 people. Some up to 12. Great cookbook:-)
This is the best cookbook I've ever bought!.......1998-09-16
Most healthy cookbooks have recipes that are just too fussy for everyday cooking. This book has recipes that are not only easy to make, but are also delicious. Even my husband, who is usually very suspicious of anything labeled "healthy", loves the recipes from this book. I use this cookbook more than any other on my shelf.

Who better to know about grilling than firefighters? There is the obvious, but foolish association of cooking with fire and firefighters. The truth is simply that firefighting is a dangerous and stressful job, and during downtime at the station, what better or more relaxing way to spend it than cooking and eating? Joseph T. Bonanno has collected the favorite grilling recipes of firefighters around the country and compiled them in The Firehouse Grilling Cookbook. Bonanno is no stranger to firehouse cuisine or healthy food. An 18-year veteran of the New York City Fire Department and a certified sports nutritionist, he proved in his first book, The Healthy Firehouse Cookbook, that he likes to eat healthy and eat well. The Firehouse Grilling Cookbook continues the tradition. Bonanno insists that grilling is the preferred cooking method of firefighters everywhere, and shares more than 150 of their down-to-earth, no-nonsense grilling recipes, including many of his own. They range from the classic Slow-Cooked Ribs to the more exotic, including Grilled Cajun Tuna Steaks and other selections for grilled poultry and seafood. There is also a thorough guide to rubs and sauces, along with excellent sections on side dishes and appetizers. Bonanno's concerns with healthy cooking are echoed throughout the book with sensible low-fat recipes that sacrifice nothing to flavor. And, to make sure you never need Bonanno's professional services, a comprehensive guide to grilling safety for both gas and charcoal grills is included, as well as an extensive guide to equipment. The book is an outstanding guide for tasteful, exciting, and safe grilling. --Mark O. Howerton

Playing with fire can be fun.......2001-07-01
Among my 20+ grilling cookbooks, this is the one to which I always turn when I want to put something good on the table with a minimum of fuss. Joe Bonanno shares with us his experience as a firehouse chef, and that of a number of other firefighters from around the country, in this remarkably good basic book. The recipes are straightforward, using ingredients that are readily available in most places. His chapters on grilling basics and safety tips are very helpful. The collection of marinade recipes is one of the best, and widest-ranging, to be found in the galaxy of grillbooks. The "Mexican Cerveza and Cilantro" marinade contributed by Richard Duden, an NYC Ladderman, is terrific; to get real flavor, be sure to use a lager (Bohemia and Dos Equis come to mind) as called for, not some thin swill like Corona. While one might assume that a firehouse cookbook would focus on beef and pork, the recipes for grilled veggies, fish, shellfish, lamb, chicken, and turkey are varied and uniformly excellent. There are a number of tasty salsa and salad recipes as well. The publisher has made this a particularly useable book by essentially eliminating the bad page turns that plague many otherwise good grill books (notably those of the Jamisons) and by including clear step-by-step instructions for taking the user from prep to palate. (Who really wants to deal with page turns when one's hands have marinade, sauce, or whatever on them?). Joe's Healthy Firehouse Cookbook is also highly recommended.

Great Book!.......2001-12-12
This is a great book for many reasons: it's a truly useful cookbook, the anecdotes re NY neighborhoods, and the perspective of a Firehouse cook has has seen and prepared it all! A wide variety of foods and cooking styles are included. My favorite is the Gourmet Irish Brisket, which always gets a rave review in my home.
