Book Description

Perhaps it is a blessing when Jasmine Dent dies in her sleep. At long last an end has come to the suffering of a body horribly ravaged by disease. It may well have been suicide; she had certainly expressed her willingness to speed the inevitable. But small inconsistencies lead her neighbor, Superintendent Duncan Kincaid of Scotland Yard, to a startling conclusion: Jasmine Dent was murdered. But if not for mercy, why would someone destroy a life already so fragile and doomed? As Kincaid and his capable and appealing assistant Sergeant Gemma James sift through the dead woman's strange history, a troubling puzzle begins to take shape -- a bizarre amalgam of good and evil, of charity and crime . . . and of the blinding passions that can drive the human animal to perform cruel and inhuman acts.

2 out of 5 stars Too Many Loose Ends.......2006-10-16

This is the second Deborah Crombie I've read, as I intended to work my way through the series. It is definitely a better book than the first, but still weak in its development of character and plot. The 'plot', in fact, wandered all over the place, with all sorts of possibilities being raised, then these being left in mid-air as the book closed with the most obvious candidate being indicted. Very unsatisfying.

I have lived in London for 6 years, and I could immediately tell that Ms Crombie is not English - she just does not connect with how people are in England. Elizabeth George is much better at this.

Deborah Crombie, judged by her first 2 books, is not nearly in the same league as P.D. James, Ruth Rendell, Minette Walters, Peter Robinson, Linda la Plante or Elizabeth George.

In summary - a pleasant enough read, but with too many loose ends not at all satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars Dark Mystery.......2004-07-28

The victim in this mystery is a dark mystery in herself. Kincaid seems to find this type of female fascinating, and becomes doubly immensed in this one because it involved his neighbor. An excellent read, highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Solid and quietly entertaining procedural.......2004-05-20

Jasmine Dent has terminal lung cancer, so her neighbor Duncan Kincaid is not surprised to find her dead body in her apartment one morning. But several small details make Duncan uneasy, and as a Scotland Yard Superintendent he's in the position to do something about it. With the help of Sergeant Gemma James, he launches an investigation to find out whether Jasmine's death was suicide or something more sinister.

Suspects are plentiful: a shy friend Meg who helped Jasmine prepare suicide plans, Meg's shiftless boyfriend Roger, Felicity the home-care nurse, Jasmine's unsuccessful brother Theo, her reticent downstairs neighbor Major Keith, and of course Jasmine herself. Duncan and Gemma methodically dig into the questions of motive and opportunity. As the investigation progresses, Duncan reads through Jasmine's journals in hopes of gaining insight from her past.

It was nice to watch Duncan and Gemma move from a strictly profession relationship to something more personal. However, I found it slightly bleak that not a single character in the book was in a solid relationship. I did like getting to know the victim through her journal entries. The plot is sound and the uncertainty about whether or not a murder was actually committed made for an interesting twist. Altogether, All Shall Be Well is an quietly entertaining procedural and a quick read.

3 out of 5 stars I Enjoyed This One More than the first........2003-09-16

This second book in the Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James mystery series, I found more entertaining than the first. I still would not put Ms. Crombie on the same level anywhere near Elizabeth George or Martha Grimes. Her characterizations cannot compare with either of these illustrious ladies, as far as I'm concerned. Also, I just didn't feel the "Englishness" in this book. It didn't read like an authentic British novel. In this book Duncan sets out to find out if his terminally ill neighbour was killed or whether she committed suicide. I must admit that I had the murderer figured out about half way through. I will still pesevere with this series, but am sadly disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars All is Well INDEED!.......2003-08-15

I've read all of Deborah Crombie's novels about Duncan Kincaid to date, and this is probably my favorite. It's the second in the series, and it's the one in which you really will get attached to Duncan and Gemma, and the one that will make you read all the rest.
Crombie is very good at weaving together elements of character, emotion, plot, and setting, and this novel is a shining example of her writing abilities. Warning: you'll find it hard to put down, so block out a big chunk of time for it!

I recently lost my mother, so I was delighted to come across this inspirational (and instructional) jewel. The quotes by Catholic thinkers and the lovely essays by Cavolina and Bunson make this book a comforting addition to my night table. "All Shall Be Well" is also excellent gift material.

5 out of 5 stars All Shall Be Well.......2006-02-04

What can you say about a book that opens up the inner spaces and exposes the soul? It is rare for a piece of Christian writing to both move me to tears and also lift me to the heights of exhilaration and celebration of God's love, but this book does exactly that.
Wherein lies the secret? Partly, it is in the subject matter. Shaynah Neshama weaves together two lives, separated by 700 years in time but joined together in life's joys, pains, exhilarations and sorrows. One is a creative, biographical expansion of the life of the much loved medieval Christian mystic, Julian of Norwich. We are brought into the sights and sounds of soul and society in this lady's life, as she copes with the huge tragedies of her time, when the bubonic plague struck with such terror. The other is in the construction of a life all too familiar to us: a young girl, abused in childhood and growing into puberty with all the potential to become an abuser herself. Shaynah Neshama draws on the deep insights she has gained through studying and teaching theology, together with her experience of working in social work and child care, to present us with a tapestry full of the colours and shadows of human emotion and experience of pain, suffering, and God's love.
The secret is also expressed, though, in the style of writing. Shaynah Neshama is a Christian who is committed to narrative theology. She passionately believes that the deep truths concerning God and man are conveyed to us not through dispassionate, sterile statements, but through the tales of life and death, light and darkness, transformation and tragedy, that are the common lot of all men and women. She believes that a description of the circumstances and environments which the God of Incarnational revelation breaks into is the best way of testifying to and demonstrating the reality of God's love and care for people.
I would commend this marvellous little book to anyone whose soul has become parched and thirsty. I would offer it to those who are tired of abstracted ideas and fashionable philosophies. It is a book of colour and depth. It will make you cry and it will lift you with joy. It will bring food and drink to your soul.

        5 out of 5 stars Tender writing.......2000-02-09

Julian Norwich's account of revelations given to her by Christ during an illness "not unto death but almost." Tender writing which will help lead any true believer into a deeper knowledge of the love of Christ, and a more wonderful realization of the deep mercifulness with which He treats those of us who wait on His compassion and mercy. That she kept the revelations vivid in her memory for nearly 20 years, before committing them to paper make them all the more dear. My heartfelt prayer a couple of years ago to "love Christ as Mary loved Him," has in part been answered by the gift of this book. Sheila Upjohn has given us a real treasure.

              5 out of 5 stars great 80's fantasy.......2004-12-01

I got my first copy of Schmidt's Twilight of the Gods: the First Name, all the way back in '85. A cautionary note to readers: this book contains GRAPHIC scenes of sex and violence. I can say this paperback was NEVER intended for young readers. A superbly written tale that is essentially a fictionalized account of the creation of the Norse Pantheon. An excellent blending of fantasy fiction with Norse, Babylonian, and Asian Legends.
Borr, son of an Aesir chieftain (Aesir, as in Asgard for you viking/norse fans) while hunting treasure and glory teams his adventurers with a band of outlaws to raid caravans on a long desert route. After attacking an exceptionally rich caravan, and claiming his would-be bride, Borr leaves a wounded outlaw captian to die on the battlefield. Blackhearted Surt screams at his back "Take me with you or take my Curse!" to which Borr replies "I am Aesir, I do not fear It or you".
Borr returns home a wealthy hero, with a trained courtesan for a wife. their First born is Voden, concieved on the very battlefield where Surt was left to die, He will grow to be a mighty warrior, "Healer and Destroyer in confrontation with the evil Dark". Surt survives his wounds only by swearing allegiance to the Lord of the Dead, to fulfill his curse he must become supreme priest-king of the southern empire of Muspellhiem. While Surt and his servant Jormungand spend their years through harrowing adventures and quests for power, Voden is growing into a great warrior, and developing magical powers of his own. The challenges to the Aesir are many as they are beset by enemies all around, only by a shaky truce with their southern neighbors, the Vanir, are they able to survive. the story ends with Voden as a young teenager, embarking on his own quest, to find a magic well, and drink of the waters of knowledge. The story continues in "Twilight of the Gods II: Groa's Other Eye" and concludes with "Twilight of the Gods III: Three Trumps Sounding"

5 out of 5 stars Norse and Babylonian mythology weaved together with magic........1998-08-10

This is the first book of the Twilight series. If you like what Crighton does with the Beowulf myth, speculations about the extinction of the Neanderthal, and Arab history in "Eaters of the Dead", you'll love this. Borr of the Aesir, teams up with a Babylonian (Assyrian?) mercenary, Surt, to rob a rich caravan. When they are forced to part on less than good terms, Surt vows to destroy Borr and everything that he is. Surts curse will fall on his son, Voden, to face. Great use of Norse myths and introduces Babylonian (Assyrian?) legends in a rich, imaginative fasion. Don't know why Schmidt is not more well known.

These restorative “live” foods can reverse chronic disease and bring back health and vitality. This eclectic cookbook shares 250 delicious vegan recipes from chefs at the Tree of Life Cafe. Dishes include Avocado Salad with Rosemary, Green Dragon Broccoli, Raw-violis, Lavender Milk, and Carob Coconut Cream Eclairs. International entrees, juices, and aromatherapeutic remedies are also featured.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best on Raw Foods.......2007-09-11

This book, along with the LifeFood Recipe Book by the Judds, are my current bibles on raw foods. I think this book is better researched and more scientific than the LifeFood book, but I use recipes from both all the time. The one thing I'm not really sure about is the temperature for dehydrating raw foods. The LifeFood book won't allow anything dried at a temperature over 118 degrees, but this book, as well as the manufacturer of the Excalibur Dehydrator, which is supposed to be the best, say you can start with a higher temperature for several hours and then reduce it. Have tried both ways, I prefer starting with the higher temp both for the texture of the food as well as the reduced drying time. Other books I would recommend are: The Raw Food Detox Diet by Rose, Green for Life by Boutenko and Nourishing Traditions by Fallon. Although Nourishing Traditions is not a book about raw foods only, it is about natural foods and does have some raw food recipes as well as a wealth of information about food that I've never seen anywhere else. It's well worth having in your library if you are seriously concerned about the foods you eat or you don't intend to eat totally raw.

5 out of 5 stars I've had it one day and it's already dog-eared.......2007-06-15

I own 11 raw food recipe books and this is the first one where I was folding down the corner of practially every recipe page to flag it. Finally a recipe book that doesn't have page after page of sweet fruit salads, smoothies, soups and sauces. This is savory recipe after savory recipe with a LOT of dehydrating involved. Apparently G. Cousen's view is now that you should start out dehydrating wet foods at 145 degrees for two hours and then knock it down to 115 in order to get the food out of the dehydrator faster and not encourage bacterial overgrowth on your food. It still seems inconclusive on how this really effects the enzymes. For the next book possibly? Oh, and the desserts look really good, too. Lots of nuts here, no cashews or maple syrup. Two things I overuse and have been wanting to remove from my diet. Great buy!

I'll be to the point. Lots of good vegan, raw recipes that are relatively simple to make and don't require exotic, difficult to find ingredients. Classified according to glycemic index, helpful to those trying to alkalize their systems. Can't wait to experiment with the large selection of appetizing concoctions in this book. Very much appreciated!

Dr. Cousins has done a phenomenal job of showing how raw foods can transform our health and well being. The recipes are terrific. I use this book at least once a day. This book is a must have if you are going to maintain a raw diet. Love it, love it, love it!

Movie Menus pairs classic movies with easy recipes updated from historic cookbooks to help you create a sensational dining experience for any film genre.

Both foodies and film buffs will find their passions fulfilled in this deliciously cinematic cookbook, which gathers authentic recipes from the cultures and eras portrayed in your favorite films: Old-Fashioned Southern Fried Chicken with Gravy to savor with Gone with the Wind; Spaghetti and Meatballs with Eggplant for The Godfather; Pan-Seared Steak and Onions with The Alamo; a Victory Garden Salad for Patton.

The chapters are organized into ten distinct film genres—everything from “Pharaohs and Philosophers” and “Knights and Kings” to “The Wild West” and “Romantic Dinner for Two”—with a dozen or so recipes each. Treat your family to a complete meal served in popcorn bowls while watching Shrek, or enjoy a Renaissance feast with Shakespeare in Love. Spiced with film factoids, black-and-white movie stills, famous lines, and bloopers, Movie Menus is as fun to read as it is to use, and promises to be a classic.
