What is so immediately stunning about this visual biography of one of golf's great physical masterpieces is the photography itself: it's all archival, and it's all black and white. It lends Alister MacKenzie's Cypress Point Club a deeply personal feeling. It seems to carry with it a sense of past, permanence, and inherent artistry, as if it were a valued family heirloom. In a sense, this volume is the family album of a cherished golf course, the photographic and historical record of the people who brought the course to life--including MacKenzie, the titular designer who would later coax Augusta National from the landscape, and Marion Hollins, one of the most formidable women ever to master a mashie--and how they collaborated to accomplish their ideal.
Though overshadowed by Pebble Beach, its more famous Monterey Peninsula neighbor, Cypress Point remains one of the true crown jewels in American golf. Its pedigree is second to none, and its 16th hole--a long par 3 over the ocean--is generally acclaimed as the premier one-shotter in existence. Shackelford, a prolific historian of golf course architecture and designers, spends the first third of the volume affectionately introducing us to Cypress Point's founders, its planners, the ideas that went into creating the club, and the work that went into building the course. Then he takes us through Cypress Point hole by hole, with his own informative text augmented by theoretical and site-specific insights from MacKenzie and his assistant, Robert Hunter, all gift-wrapped with stunningly dramatic photos from the 1920s and '30s.
Alister MacKenzie's Cypress Point Club is a truly lovely volume, historically fascinating and visually pleasing. To the golf-obsessed among us, the surprising story behind the birth of No. 16 should alone be worth the greens fees. But like No. 16 itself, the story is just part of an overall whole, and there's much in Cypress Point to beguile anyone who can appreciate the splendid connection between an ancient game and an environment that gorgeously elevates it. --Jeff Silverman

Fanfare for Cypress Point.......2006-03-14
An excellent read, great historical pictures, this documentary of the building of Cypress Point takes one back to another era of golf deveolpment. If you are a historian of the golf course, this piece of history is a must, Geoff has done a great job of putting it together. The book is timeless.
Exceptional Historic Document.......2000-12-22
If you have any interest in Alister MacKenzie's genius, or the great golf architecture of the 1920s, you must have this book. Called by many the Sistine Chapel of Golf, Cypress Point is one of the most exceptional courses on the planet. This book is an exceptional document of how it began. Magnificent full page b&ws show every hole of the early Cypress Point Club, while the text, much from the contemporaneous hand of Robert Hunter (MacKenzie's partner), tells how the course design and construction came together. Shackleford has done a wonderful service for golf historians everywhere by compiling this masterpiece.
Book Description
A novel about the power to heal . . . and the power to change.
It is not a love Joelle D'Angelo would ever have chosen. But it is one she can't deny.
Joelle D'Angelo's best friend, Mara, is left with brain damage after she suffers an aneurysm during the delivery of her son. Alone and grieving, Joelle turns to the only other person who understands her pain: Mara's husband, Liam. And what starts out as comfort between friends gradually becomes something more. Something undeniable.
Now all Joelle needs is a miracle.
Torn by guilt and the impossibility of her feelings for Liam, Joelle seeks help from someone she's not even sure she believes in -- a healer named Carlynn Kling Shire. Joelle sets out to find Carlynn, knowing that Mara needs something conventional medicine can't supply. And hoping that if Mara is well, Joelle's feelings for Liam will end.
Her search leads her to a mansion in Monterey, California, and into the life of a woman shrouded in mystery. And as Joelle is guided down an unfamiliar path by a woman who is clearly keeping her own secrets, she discovers that some love is doomed, while some love can survive anything.

Not enough time in the day to keep reading.......2005-09-18
I picked up Cypress Point at a book store when I was on vacation and needed a book. I had never read Diane Chamberlain before.I was very happy to have chosen a book that kept my attention with every chapter.I look forward to reading more of her books.
Terrific page-turner.......2005-06-26
I've loved Diane Chamberlain's work from the moment I discovered her and have bought and read all of her books. CYPRESS POINT is one of my favorites--a complex mix of mystery, romance, and family drama--the kind of book Ms. Chamberlain does so beautifully. The whole time I was reading it I kept thinking how much I wished I'd thought of this plot first, which is the highest compliment a writer can give to another writer. Diane Chamberlain is one of the very best voices in women's fiction today. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Love this author, love her books!.......2005-02-26
I first began reading Diane Chamberlain in 1992 with her book, Keeper of the Light. After that title I made it my business to find and read every book she wrote and then buy all of her new books almost as soon as they are published. For some reason I saved Cypress Point which I bought at a reading featuring the author in 2002. And while Keeper of the Light and the Keeper trilogy which include Kiss River and Her Mother's Shadow will remain my favorite book, I do think I saved one of the best for last since Cypress Point was a most wonderful read.
Cypress Point takes place in the beautiful area of Monterey, California surrounded by the cypress trees we all marvel at whether we live there or visit. And what better place than to tell the story of a medical healer and the young woman she saves at birth whose paths once again are about to cross.
Carlynne Shire knew she was a medical healer at an early age. And while she has always been treated special by her family her twin sister, Lisbeth, didn't possess the same gift and was virtually ignored by her mother. Growing up and treated differently, Carlynne becomes a gifted doctor while her sister only attends secretarial school. Both sisters find love although neither of them have quite as traditional marriages as one would think.
Then sometime later when Carlynn saves a young baby born on a commune, little does she know that in the future years later she would be asked to save this woman's best friend. Or how this birth at the commune would effect the life of her sister, herself or their husbands.
For Joelle reaching out to the woman who saved her years before may be both a blessing and a curse if she is able to help her. Joelle needs Carlyn to try and help heal her best friend who suffered a brain aneurysm while giving birth to a son. But if Mara regains her abilities and life, what will happen to the love Joelle feels for Mara's husband, Liam. How the medical healer and Joelle meet after more than 30 yearsprovides readers with a wonderful novel filled with romance and a bit of a mystery.
As the author Diane Chamberlain provides readers with in most of her books, this one really captivated me and I hated to see it end. I highly recommend this book as well as all of Diane's books. They are emotional stories with characters you will think about long after you finish her books. Now that I also read Diane's latest book, The Bay at Midnight, I will be anxiously waiting for her next book to arrive on the bookshelves.
An emotional rollercoaster..........2003-08-19
When her best friend, Mara, had an anerysm (sp?) during the delivery of her son, Joelle D'Angelo was heartbroken. Not only for the little boy that would grow up without his mother, but for Mara's husband, Liam. Because she loved Mara like a sister, Joelle did all she could to ease Liam's heartbreak. She spent time with their son, Sam, and even helped find a home to put Mara in when it looked like she would not be recovering. There friendship took a drastic turn one night when they slept together. For Joelle, she was sleeping with the man she loved, while for Liam, all he saw was the betrayal of his wife.
Now Joelle is pregnant herself. Having had a hard time conceiving with her ex-husband, Joelle is estatic, even though she knows that Liam won't show her enthusiasm. Before she moves away, she wants to do one more thing for Liam and Mara. The woman tha saved her life when she was born was said to have worked miracles, and Joelle wants that miracle for the man she loves. Even if the woman he loves isn't her.
Chamberlain again delivers in this intensely emotional read. I was entralled by the story of Lisabeth and Carlynn as well as Joelle and Liam. It made my heartbreak to see what Liam was putting himself through by trying to remain faithful to a woman that simply didn't exisist anymore.
Don't miss it!
Another Chamberlain page-turner.......2002-04-24
This is a story of two women, Joelle and Carlynn, whose lives run parallel, yet are more intertwined than meets the eye. There are two separate stories. One traces Carlynn's life beginning in 1937 at the age of 7; the other begins with Joelle's birth in 1967. The two stories merge into one where deep rooted feelings and secrets are revealed between the two women and that of their loved ones. Diane Chamberlain is best known for underlying themes where things are not always what they seem. "Cypress Point" will not disappoint the reader in line with that theme.

Super Reader.......2007-08-04
Just another fun superhero romp. Venom being evil crazy venom and all that. I am not a huge Spider-Man fan, but I am happy to read Diane Duane Spider-Man books, no problem. Venom as big slobbering fanged crazyman, with a bit of a thing for wanting to indulge in arachnid appetisers is what you find here. Hell hath no fury like a black alien bodysuit symbiote scorned.
Classic Spidey..... well almost.......2003-12-02
By the time you get to this review you'll more than likely have read others on this book alredy. You may have noticest some complain the action sequences a to bland, and ya, OK, I have read better firght sences, but I have read alot wrost as well. Over all it is a good book with a strong story line (strongest in the trilogy in my opinion). True the action could have been better, and true Peter and Mary Jane could have had more intelligent conversations.
My only real complaint is that Duane toned down Spider-Man's powers (and Venom's powers to for that matter) a little to much. In the comics Spidey can lift up to 10 tons ( about enough to juggle a truck) and venom was about 3 times that striength. In this book Ol' Web-Head is still stronger than the normal man, but not by much. his speed and his reflexes take a toll as well.
The only other thing wrong with it is the lack of orgin on the Mystery Villian (for those of you who hve not read the book yet mystery villian is all the detail that I'll give so that I don't spoil it for you). It was my hope it would be addressed in the other two books, but was sadly, never mentioned again.
The intesting story was enough to keep the book afloat but thease few erorrs where enough to knock one star off the rating. Over all Spider-Man: The Venom Factor is a good book for any true Spider-Fan
A ho-hum Spider-Man book..........2003-03-13
I'm going back to read all the Marvel books (I have just recently completed my collection), and will post reviews on all of them for people who still care.
Fist up is Spider-Man: Venom Factor by Diane Duane. This is not a good book to start off on, but oh well. This book is bland and, worst of all, boring to boot. The action scenes are poorly done and not at all exciting, and the "character development" scenes between Peter and Mary-Jane consist of talking, eating, and having sex....not necessarily in that order. Yes, we know they are a married couple who are attracted to each other, but we don't need their ... ...high school-ish innuendos every time they speak to each other. There are better books for you to read then this one. AND this is just the first in a LOOSELY tied together trilogy that doesn't get much better from here...sigh.
A Venomous Web is Slung!.......2003-01-20
Author Diane Duane weaves a great story about everyone favorite web-slinger, Spiderman. It appears that a someone, some creature, is terrorizing and killing certain members of N.Y.C.'s homeless population . Plus, this someone has a tasty bite for food that is radioactive. The creature at first appears to be Spiderman's enemy Venom or is it? Could the creature be Hobglobin? An unlikely allegiance is formed to find the true killer.
Although I not familiar with the character of Venom and the plot as it appeared in the popular comic book Diane Duane fills in the gaps for the reader and continues the story and characterization(s) in grand style. While I know that casting on the Spiderman sequel has begun and rumors of the sequel's story lines use the traditional, original villains that many of us grew up with. I hope that down the road that movie producers will have the insight to do at least one film about Venom and Spidey.
She knows her spider-man.......2001-09-19
I have been a Spiderman comic collector for some time now. I normally don't read novels based on comic characters because they usually mess up. Not in this case. Duane really knows her spider-man and proves it with this book (first in a trilogy).

Book Description
The groundbreaking original edition of Buzzed has sold over 60,000 copiesand now the authors have revised and updated it to include the most recent discoveries about drugs. This scientifically accurate and easy-to-read handbook gives the most balanced, objective information available on the most often used and abused drugs, from alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine to heroin, ecstasy, and Special K. In both quick-reference summaries and in-depth analysis, it reports on how these drugs enter the body, how they manipulate the brain, their short-term and long-term effects, the kinds of "high" they produce, and the circumstances in which they can be deadly.
Neither a "just say no" treatise nor a "how-to" manual, Buzzed is based on the conviction that people make healthier decisions when they "just say know"when they understand in straightforward language how our complex brains really work and why even small doses of various substances can have such powerful (and sometimes life-threatening) effects. 8 pages of color illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Just Say Know!.......2007-04-25
This is a book that takes the right approach to drug education. It certainly isn't the naive rhetoric of the "Just Say No" campaign nor does it romanticize drug use or downplay the potential dangers. Instead it provides a wealth of useful factful information that is based on scientific research but is still accessible to the average reader.
The book is divided into sections based on the various classes of drugs - hallucinogens, opiates, stimulants, etc. Just about every drug, both legal and illegal,is covered, with extra attention paid to those most widely consumed, such as alcohol and marijuana.
The writers here tell it like it is and, overall, do an outstanding job. I would have preferred slightly more attention devoted to explaining the actual effects, both positive and negative, of each individual drug (ie) how it feels to "get high". Some people may see this as promoting drug use. But the truth is that "getting high" can sometimes feel really bad. For example, smoking pot can, for some people, cause intense feelings of anxiety very similar to what people with clinical anxiety experience. Can smoking pot lead to clinical anxiety later in life? The truth is that the medical community is, to the best of my knowledge, still out on this question. In fact, far too little is known about all illegal drugs because the government, in its ignorance, makes it extremely difficult for scientists to study them. But exploring the effects of specific drugs on brain chemistry is where this book excels. The three primary writers are professors at Duke University Medical Center and so are clearly well qualified to write on the subject.
This book should be required reading for all high schools students and I would recommended it to just about anyone working in the field or interested in the topic. Knowledge is power and this book provides a great education.
wonderful book.......2007-01-22
I had this book along with chemical dependency for graduate drug class. I have used this book in my psychology and law enforcement professions and find it to be very easy to use and very informative. Great for those who want an easy read.
Different than anything else.......2006-11-10
I love this book because it's the first I have read that JUST gives the facts. Good or bad, the writers speak from a scientific perspective rather than what the media tries to feed the public. It's refreshing and I can trust that there is no hidden agenda here.
Modern, Factual, Agenda-Free Handbook on Modern Drug Abuse.......2005-12-15
Some folks reviewing this book don't seem to understand the purpose for which the book was intended: This is a general consumer book with "straight facts" from Ph.D.s in pharmacology and chemistry on "the most used and abused drugs." This isn't intended to be comprehensive. It it certainly isn't about grandstanding as some tool in the "war on drugs." The motto in this book is "Just say Know."
The authors candidly observe, for example, that it's practically impossible to overdose on marijuana. There's no "Reefer Madness" in this text. And alcohol, caffeine and nicotine certainly qualify as abused drugs in this day and age. The substances that are covered include those above and Ecstasy (MDMA), various hallucinogens (LSD, mushrooms, peyote, etc.), so-called "herbal drugs", various inhalants (nitrous oxide and psychotoxics), marijuana, opiates, sedatives in general and stimulants in general. The chapters on "Drug Basics," "Brain Basics" and "Legal Issues" were straightforward and concise.
I work principally in law enforcement and use this book along with the Drug Identification Bible as resource literature in helping local kids with presentations. One of the authors, Dr. Wilkie Wilson, has been a TV Dateline expert and wonderful spokesperson for being informed about the risks of drug use.

It is a JOY.......2006-08-17
This book is GREAT!!!! If you can, this is the book! I have used so many recipes out of this book already. This is the 1st time I have canned since I was 6 yrs old with my mother making jelly. this book is great.
Great for beginners!.......2006-07-10
This cookbook contains all the instructions a beginner needs for canning. Being a total klutz in the kitchen and having a negative amount of cooking talent (i.e. can barely make toast without burning either myself or the toast), I wasn't expecting my first canning attempt to be a success. However, it was, and I now have several jars of delicious strawberry jam in my pantry! I will use this book a lot - it contains a nice diversity of recipes.
Timesaving Techniques .......2005-11-19
A handy book that includes timesaving techniques from microwave oven jams to quick pickles, classic recipes such as Strawberry Jam and Canned Tomatoes as well as exciting new recipes including Christmas Conserves and Four Citrus Marmalade. Recommended.
Janet Sue Terry - author of "A Rich, Deliciously Satisfying Collection of Breakfast Recipes".
Practical book .......2005-09-06
I bought four different books in preparation of the harvest season and having no idea what to do with 40L of berries. Of the four, this is the only one that is effectively illustrated, nicely organized and gives you all you need to know in a little more than 120 pages. It covers all the sorts of fruits and veg that most people will be happy with while leaving room for variation and experimentation. I just made a batch of the cranberry conserve that should be fabulous to enjoy during the dark days of winter.
A bit too precious.......2005-08-16
This is a really cute book if you want to make a couple of jars of jelly to impress your friends but if you want a basic guide to canning that is practical and always useful, this is not the book for you. Try the Ball Book or "Company's Coming" for no fail recipes and stuff that is not so cute.
