Book Description

Alice Ascher, a shopkeeper in Andover, is bludgeoned to death at her place of work. Next to die is Miss Bernard in Bexhill, then Mr. Clarke in Churston. More disturbing than the alphabetic sequence of the killings or the ABC Railway guide that the killer leaves at the scene of each crime are the taunting notes Hercule Poirot receives each time the killer is about to strike again. It is one of Poirot’s most challenging cases yet.

4 out of 5 stars Depends Upon Why You Like Poirot.......2007-04-15

The ABC Murders is something between a lengthy short-story and a full-on novel.

Christie's genius is that she has created, in Poirot, a man who is incredibly proud, incredibly justified in his pride, and yet, somehow, incredibly endearing. Thus, if you love Poirot mysteries because you enjoy the company of M. Poirot and Captain Hastings, this one will leave you smiling, but looking to the next one on your shelf.

However, if your preferences lay in following the mechanism of his searching, pensive, relentless investigations, you will likely enjoy this one.

3 out of 5 stars the A.B.C. murders .......2006-12-11

This book is probably one of Agatha Christie's finestest books, but due its lack of fine detail and because I just didn't really like it.
This book is for anyone who likes a good mystery and a surprising turn of events.
In this book, Hwexulw Poirot receives letters of murder to occur soon. After a long time of fearful angxiety, Poirot solve the case before the E murder.
Agatha Christie is a great writer and I would recommend any of her 100 book to read.

2 out of 5 stars Harsh review, based on the greatness of her writing as a whole.......2006-09-11

I love Agatha Christie, she is definately one of my favorites and definately is the reason that we have quality mystery movies and books today. The low rateing i gave this book is not because it is a bad book, in relation to most mysteries this one would be rated highly, but when put up against other Agatha Christie books its pretty crappy.

I get the idea of the plot, the numerous murders keep the action going throught the novel to lead the reader on, which was a good thing to try because i know the most common complaint with agatha christie is the boaring investigative part in the middle. My problem with the book is with the way it is constructed, several interludes happen in the book that come from the (so called) killer. This makes the reader feel like they already know the answer to the problem and makes the reader wonder why the book continues.

So after i got half way through the book i was wondering, why should i continue with this book if i already know who did it, i think that kind of takes away from the story. Although the ending comes togeather and is pretty good (not her best). I think this uncharactoristic give to the reader, in the middle of the book is what really hurts the story in the end.

Id say read the book for sure, but dont let the interludes push u to lose interest, its never as simple as she leads you to believe

5 out of 5 stars Poirot and Hastings "Hunt Together" Again.......2006-09-06

THE A.B.C. MURDERS is not only one of the finest of the "Hercule Poirot" stories and one of the most memorable works in the Agatha Christie canon, it is also one of the greatest of all detective stories; it ranks right alongside Conan Doyle's THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES and Christie's own THE MURDER OF ROGER ACKROYD. The plotting is even more ingenious than is usual for Christie; the story itself is a wonderful human drama about a lonely epileptic who is suspected of being a serial murderer. Also highly recommended, for those who have finished the novel: the superb made-for-TV version of THE A.B.C. MURDERS, starring David Suchet as Poirot and available on DVD from Amazon.com.

4 out of 5 stars predictable ending, but good read.......2006-08-15

agatha christie ventures into somewhat uncharted territory - the this time, poirot is on the trail of a homicidal maniac. Christie fans will see the ending coming. the characters are a bit bland. Poirot comes up with the solution, but in the end any number of other solutions could have been equally plausible, so it is not clear why he went with this particular one.

Still, it is an Agatha Christie book, so even when it is bad, it is good.

Many Americans have wondered why prescription drugs have become so expensive while advertising for those drugs seems to grow exponentially. Former New England Journal of Medicine Editor Marcia Angell has some answers. The pharmaceutical industry, according to Angell, is fraught with corruption and doing a disservice to customers, the federal government, and to the medical establishment itself. In The Truth About the Drug Companies, Angell explains how a huge portion of the revenue generated by "Big Pharma" goes not into research and development but into aggressive marketing campaigns to sell their product. She describes how, even though the drug companies claim that it costs them an average of 802 million dollars per drug to develop new medicines, that figure is obscenely inflated since it factors in marketing as well as expected interest the company would have received had they invested the money in the open market. Meanwhile, Angell says, most of the R & D work is done by colleges and universities funded by the government. There are also problems with the drugs themselves, Angell indicates, since a majority are "me-too drugs", slightly modified versions of existing products which meant to address concerns of consumers most likely to spend money on pharmaceuticals. Thus, the market is filled with remarkably similar drugs to treat depression and high cholesterol while potentially life-saving medicines for diseases afflicting third-world countries are discontinued because they aren't profitable. In the books most damning passage, Angell tells of the high-priced junkets offered to doctors, ostensibly offered as educational opportunities that seem to constitute little more than bribes. The prognosis for reform is a grim one, Angell indicates, due to the massive cash reserves and lobbying efforts of "Big Pharma." Indeed, that lobby was hard at work trying to discredit her claims immediately upon the book's publication. But for anyone who's paid a pharmacy bill, The Truth About the Drug Companies is a fascinating read. --John Moe

                      Book Description

During her two decades at The New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Marcia Angell had a front-row seat on the appalling spectacle of the pharmaceutical industry. She watched drug companies stray from their original mission of discovering and manufacturing useful drugs and instead become vast marketing machines with unprecedented control over their own fortunes. She saw them gain nearly limitless influence over medical research, education, and how doctors do their jobs. She sympathized as the American public, particularly the elderly, struggled and increasingly failed to meet spiraling prescription drug prices. Now, in this bold, hard-hitting new book, Dr. Angell exposes the shocking truth of what the pharmaceutical industry has become–and argues for essential, long-overdue change.

Currently Americans spend a staggering $200 billion each year on prescription drugs. As Dr. Angell powerfully demonstrates, claims that high drug prices are necessary to fund research and development are unfounded: The truth is that drug companies funnel the bulk of their resources into the marketing of products of dubious benefit. Meanwhile, as profits soar, the companies brazenly use their wealth and power to push their agenda through Congress, the FDA, and academic medical centers.

Zeroing in on hugely successful drugs like AZT (the first drug to treat HIV/AIDS), Taxol (the best-selling cancer drug in history), and the blockbuster allergy drug Claritin, Dr. Angell demonstrates exactly how new products are brought to market. Drug companies, she shows, routinely rely on publicly funded institutions for their basic research; they rig clinical trials to make their products look better than they are; and they use their legions of lawyers to stretch out government-granted exclusive marketing rights for years. They also flood the market with copycat drugs that cost a lot more than the drugs they mimic but are no more effective.

The American pharmaceutical industry needs to be saved, mainly from itself, and Dr. Angell proposes a program of vital reforms, which includes restoring impartiality to clinical research and severing the ties between drug companies and medical education. Written with fierce passion and substantiated with in-depth research, The Truth About the Drug Companies is a searing indictment of an industry that has spun out of control.

The media in general and the medical industry in particular do not want you (patient) to read and be informed about what you are being prescribed and the consequences. They also are dealing with symptoms instead of causes. Prevention is not in the medical dictionary terminology. Drugs do not heal! Drugs should be a short term interrupter and not a progression from one prescription to another and another. Pharmaceutical companies are gaining more political power through Federal legislation of Congress, which results show in company coffers. Read and be informed.

At the same time people are dying from this disease, and that, Big Pharma maintains it's strangle hold on research in our Medical Schools, and the treatment of diseases. Why the Diabetes industry alone worldwide is a 4 billion dollar a day industry. Not to mention herpes, asthma, AIDS, cancer, and the like. The afore mentioned diorders are said to be incureable. Why? Well when research is geared to profit, and not a cure, one begins to understand why. No cures unless there is a profit to be made. So what if people die, it controls the population.

It has been more than 100 years or more since a real cure for a specific disease was discovered. There is more of a profit in making a crutch, than an actual cure. Because once that disease is cured there is then very little money to be made. We have diseases hanging around forever, and when they say there is no cure, they mean we have not made enough money from this disease. In short there is no profit in a cure. Profit is of main concern here. Not you or your family.

Ms. Angell has a blueprint or an inside look at the process of the how and why things are the way they are. Money, money, money. The Love of money is the root of all evil. Money before people. This book is an eye opener, and like the people who rang the bell before 9/11, if no one listens, no good can come from this book. Ms. Angell is giving us a look from the point of view of a former insider, and very well bares listening to. Read this book and become pro-active about the healthcare of you and your family.

If your party planning has you paralyzed by visions of serving pimiento loaf paired with the Pi˜a Coladas, fear not. Sophisticated help is on the way with Cocktail Food, a collection of 50 intriguing, anything-but-ordinary hors d'oeuvres compiled and tested by sisters Mary Corpening Barber and Sara Corpening Whiteford, with collaborator Lori Lyn Narlock. In an easy-to-follow, uncluttered format perfect for the moderately accomplished kitchen hand, the authors present globally influenced recipes to pair with a wide range of libations.

Suggested snacks to serve with "travel agents"--those brolly-festooned tropical drinks that instantly transport you to de eye-lind, mahn--include Figs in a Blanket, a gorgeous canvas of fresh fig and Gorgonzola brushed with balsamic and walnut oil, then wrapped in prosciutto; and 'ZA!, mini-English-muffin pizzas with Cambozola and sun-dried tomatoes.

Some recipes require minimal prep or cook time. Spear Ecstasy, asparagus with a lemon-tarragon dip, and the Caprese Skewers--made with cherry tomato, mozzarella, and basil--are simplicity itself. But working with phyllo dough, a key ingredient in Mary's Little Lambs, has driven more than one talented amateur chef to swill down the cooking sherry. And a couple of the recipes could get spendy for your little clambake: the authors launch a preemptive strike at anyone intending to substitute lumpfish in their Eggstravaganza! by calling for high-quality caviar. But perhaps a question posed on the back of the book's dust jacket says it best: "Would Holly Golightly settle for chips and dip?" Maybe Tiffany's is no longer serving breakfast, but armed with Cocktail Food, they'd lay on one heck of a happy hour. --Tony Mason

5 out of 5 stars Best cocktail food cookbook ever.......2007-01-11

I bought 5 copies to give as gifts at parties because everytime i make something from this, everyone asks for the recipe. It's the best & the recipes are easy.

4 out of 5 stars The Corpening Sisters Do It Again.......2004-05-06

"Cocktail Food: 50 Finger Foods with Attitude" is my third cookbook by the Corpening sisters. The other two are "Wraps" and "Smoothies," and they're every bit as good. These women have a knack for often unusual, very flavorful food with very strange names. This book includes a number of good hints for any occasion at which you wish to serve finger food. They even give figures for how many hors d'oeuvres and drinks to serve. Then you'll find directions for pairing hors d'eouvres with drinks, and a couple of "themes" for possible parties.

Weird recipe names is one way in which this cookbook stands out. How could you forget a cookbook with recipes like "oink!" and "steaked and thai-ed?" Mind you, when someone asks me what those marvelous little delicacies are over there on the table, you can bet I'll be saying "oh, that's skewered thai-style steak with lime, jalapeno, and mint." Unless, of course, the questioner is either a very good friend or someone I'd like to irritate.

"Bold flavors" has become a cliche. When I think of bold in relation to cooking I think of bland A-1 steak sauce ads. But when the Corpening sisters get together, bold is the most appropriate adjective I can think of. Bayou Biscuits give you the distinctive flavor of Andouille sausage. Delhi Blues is a combination of blue cheese and walnut shortbread with chutney! The Smoked Salmon Bonbons are exquisite. We like to use the tahini-ginger dipping sauce that's meant to go with shrimp and serve it with shrimp chips instead.

You'll find more recipes like this throughout the book--bold, exquisite symphonies of flavor that bowl you over. However, because the flavors are so strong, a few of them are almost bound to be ones you find unpleasant. No matter how they dress it up, I'll never do more than shrug over shrimp, and no one will ever convince me to eat a dish with onion as a main ingredient. For you it might be the radishes, or maybe the aforementioned blue cheese. This book is certainly worth a buy, though, regardless of whether you like cocktail parties. It may only contain 50 recipes, but they're recipes that pack a lot of punch!

5 out of 5 stars Best Ever Party Food.......2004-01-29

I have used the recipes from this book about a dozen times and am asked for the recipe for at least one dish every time. I currenlty use about 15 of the recipes and have found no need to modify any. As with any cookbook many of the recipes did not meet my need, but this book is my primary resource when planning a appetizers for a party.

2 out of 5 stars Some recipes aren't quite there yet.......2003-05-02

I've owned this book for over a year and have used it when planning for a few parties. Some of the recipes are excellent, but others just don't taste good. I am an avid cook, and have had to improvise a number of times when the finished recipe was completed because the appetizer was close to tasteless (example: the dipping sauce for the Rockin Rubens as well as the Rockin Ruben breadsticks themselves; Dab a Crab was dab-a-boring).

I have found that I use Cocktail Food now more for inspiration than to follow the actual recipes. I too found the recipe names a little too cute, so most of the time my appetizers go incognito when people ask about the actual names.

                                5 out of 5 stars Excellent handbook.......2003-01-18

Bought this book on a whim at the UCLA book fair. Have used recipes from it for two parties and received rave reviews! Love the mushroom in puff pastry, pepperoni pinwheels, and the shrimp with sesame seed recipes in particular. (Keep in mind that I also believe that puff pastry should be made a food group...so I may be biased.) I do agree that the recipe names are a little cutsie and annoying, but do NOT let that get in your way. It's chock full of great recipes that are easy to make and very good tasting. The fact that my very picky gourmet cook of an aunt liked what I made from here validated the purchase in a heartbeat.
