4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 Stars -- A Slow Walk To Hell Is A Fast Read For Entertainment!.......2007-03-20

Do yourself a favor and get yourself a copy of A Slow Walk To Hell. This book adds to Patrick A. Davis's long list of fast-paced, suspenseful military thrillers. I don't understand why this author isn't a bigger "name" among thriller lovers. A Slow Walk To Hell involves an Air Force investigator assigned to the torture-slaying of an officer who becomes embroiled in a possible hate crime with high-ranking officers and the victim's uncle, the leading presidential candidate, as the chief suspects. Its plot is well-developed and filled with twists and turns, and its characters are multi-dimensional and interesting. If you decide to read A Slow Walk To Hell make sure you have a lot of spare tme because once you start it, I don't think you'll be able to put it down for any length of time. Without going into detail, the reason I'm not giving the book a 5-star rating pertains to its ending, which, while surprising, isn't explained clearly enough (at least for me). Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Complex Plot.......2006-06-11

Martin Collins is the chief of police in a small Virginia town not far from Washington,D.C. Also, he is a former Lt. Col. in the Air Force OSI and is subject to being called back to investigate special cases. He has a 13 year old daughter and has been involved in a romantic relationship with a fellow female officer which has not been fulfilled since he has had problems getting over the death of his wife. An military officer is brutally tortured and killed. The murders to wipe out witnesses to the blackmail plot continue.
A general who is a friend of his from college is a prime suspect.
A congressman who seems to be assured of election as the next president is a key figure as is his wife a beautiful former Olympic athlete. A number of high level officials are involved in homosexual situations. Plenty of excitement along the way.

5 out of 5 stars Loved It!.......2004-09-25

A thouroughly entertaining military police procedural. Marty, Amanda, and Simon once again do what they do best by solving a grippping, sad murder story with many twist and turns, and shocking revelations. Mr Davis fans will not be disappointed with this well written novel. As usual, I can't wait to see what comes next with these three.

4 out of 5 stars A neat surprise.......2004-08-04

Davis has foud niche with his military crime fiction. A terrific story with a neat surprise at end. He moves through the world of the Pentagon and joint chief of staff easily, and his characters have a lot of bite to them. The one problem he has fallen into, and why I gave this only 4 stars, is that he is becoming repetitve in his books with witnesses being shot just as they are being interviewed. It happens in nearly every book he has written.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Ask, Don't Tell.......2004-05-10

Air Force investigator Martin Collins and Major Amanda Gardner are called upon to investigate the torture-slaying of Major Franklin Talbot, the nephew of the next president of the United Sates. Major Talbot revealed that he was gay to Colonel Kelly, but after Colonel Kelly reported him and brought him up on charges, Talbot denied it. Talbot's powerful uncle, Congressman Harris, circumvented what could have been blown up into a full-blown scandal. Unable to prove his charges, Kelly was conveniently reassigned out of the country. Now Talbot is dead and Kelly is back in the country and a prime suspect. The further along in their investigation Martin and Amanda get,the more complicated it gets and the more people end up dead.

He and Major Gardner have many times worked investigations together, but this time proves awkward for them. Martin has lost his wife Nicole five years earlier and is raising his 13-year old daaugher. He and Amanda have had a romantic relationship, but Amanda decided to move on when Martin was not ready to let go of his deceased wife. Now Amanda is engaged and Martin realizes that he loves her. The dynamic in their relationship coupled with an interesting plot makes for a very good story.

Patrick Davis does know how to tell an interesting story. It was an intricately woven plot that examines the military "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy along with some religious/homosexual behavior/guilt issues. The one thing that annoyed me though, was a plot device that Mr. Davis used to keep the reader from knowing some pertinent details of the story. It was almost like the characters were whispering behind your back. Once or twice would have been okay, but it happened time and time again. There had to be a better way to move the story along with the obvious one character telling another character something, but leaving the reader in the dark.

1 out of 5 stars Ridiculous.......2007-09-07

There are a few characterizations in this fantasy piece that ring true, but those few that do exist are smothered by the absurdity of the rest of this novel. It might have helped if the author had taken 10 or 15 minutes to do a little research geography alone. Yes, there were covert missions aplenty into Laos and even southern China. Yes, many were FUBAR at the moment of conception. But the portrayals in "Slow Walk through the Gardens..." don't even reach the level of comic book. Prospective readers are encouraged to save their money. There are plenty of accounts, and even some fiction, available on Amazon regarding US intervention in Laos...all far better than this mess. Without a doubt, "Slow Walk...Gardens of Hell" one of the worst books written to date on the war in Southeast Asia. Too bad "zero" stars was not a rating option.

3 out of 5 stars Not sure if this non-fiction book is really fictional.......2007-07-29

I have read dozens (hundred, plus??) of first person accounts of their action in SE asia. SOme of this story is so radically different I am having a hard time believing it. THe basis is that he was a graduate student in guerilla warfare hired by the CIA to help them in Laos and Thailand. The guy that hires him gets fired so the author is shipped off to do combat patrols.
He appears to be a CIA contractor, but not a CIA actual employee. His willingness and ease with which he supposedly kills superior officers and other members of the US Army either makes him the most honest author of the war to date or not completely honest about his history. As a civilian contractor I don't understand if he was under any contract, and if not why not just leave if it was so bad for him. Also, as a civilian, why the hell was he taking ANY orders from Army personel. As a discharged veteran, any military person who tried to give me orders I would tell to get bent as I am a civilian now. I don't understand why he allowed himself to be ordered into situations when he was not official CIA and his directions weren't coming from the CIA.

That being said I am not a combat veteran so I will leave others to decide if it is true or not.

Other than that it is an interesting read if nothing else. If you can keep a skeptical outlook it is a quick read.

5 out of 5 stars A graphic look at the Vietnam War.......2006-10-10

This novel is an intense look at the realities of war from the perspective of a soldier who was just trying to make it out alive. The main character is an American intellectual who was hired by the CIA to conduct intelligence in Laos and vietnam. Unfortunately for him, the CIA dropped the program and didn't know what to do with him. He was sent to command a small patrol in Laos as an "equivalent" officer, which meant that he was never officially part of the military, but was treated like one. Through a combination of resourcefulness, craziness, booze, drugs, and just plain luck he survived in the enemy-infested jungles of Laos against remarkable odds only to have to fight for his own survival against the local military brass who wished he would just disappear. He made a few friends but even more enemies as he did everything in his power to come through it all alive.

3 out of 5 stars I don't know about you, but I'm all for Brownie Power!.......2002-10-19

This book was about as good as the first. Mainly the same characters, and, well, the same plot, because they have not yet reached the city of a thousand delights.
The one this that I really enjoyed about this book was Tap, the Brownie. I don't know why, but I loved that little guy. To me, he and the other Brownies were the best part of this series.
There were some funny moments, such as when the enchanted shoe took the floor at the monsters convention, but overall it was just okay.
I'm still hoping that the next book will have a bit more depth, and maybe a little more development in the characters.
And, as the city of delights seems to have disappeared, I think I can guess what the plot of the next novel will be. So, I hope that they come up with an interesting way to rescue the city from the foul clutches of the Netherhells.
So far, this series is not a favorite of mine (I like my humorous fantasy to be funnier than I found these to be) but I have hopes for the last book. It promises to be very....interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first.......2002-04-15

The first book of the Ebenezum trilogy, "Malady of Magicks," is one of the funniest works of fantasy ever written. The sequel, "Multitude of Monsters," is not quite up to the same level of excellence. It felt like Gardner (whose first book was originally a cluster of short stories) was still getting used to the whole "novel" way of writing.

This novel picks up where "Malady" left off, with the magic-allergic wizard Ebenezum, his hormone-addled apprentice Wuntvor, the relentlessly truthful demon Snarks, and the none-too-swift-but-has-a-big-club warrior Hendrek ("Doom!"). They're still heading for the City of Forbidden Delights (and Wuntvor still can't wait), but they encounter unexpected delays in the form of Brownies, Brax the Salesdemon ("Along with your hellishly small fine print!"), the beautiful witch Norei, and a collection of magical beasties who want equal recognition as unicorns. (There is a unicorn too, who appears a little obsessed with pointing out that Wuntvor is a virgin) Any problems? Well, the demons are invading, and Ebenezum seems to have gotten himself into a giant shoe...

This is quite different in its layout. While the first book was a series of interconnected vignettes, this is a single, longer story. As a result, there is a different feel to it. Gardner seems to get a little stuck on some continuing themes (like the monster organization) and they last a little longer and become a little more serious than they should.

That said, the characters are as delightful as ever. Poor Ebenezum still sneezes up a storm whenever he's near magic; Wuntvor falls instantly in love with any female characters nearby him. Hendrek is not as full-fleshed as the others; Snarks is still great fun, though a little less prominent. Other faves like the "Damsel and the Dragon" show up, as does the deliciously slimy salesdemon Brax and the fearsome Guxx Unfufadoo.

His humor is as fresh and witty as ever, full of lunatic situations and the crazy spells. The dialogue is just believable enough, without being too kooky. (There are some fantasy novels where you half-expect to hear a laugh track)

Oh, and "Bog Womblers." You'll know it when you see it. Good fun, and on to "Night in the Netherhells." (What say the publisher reprints the Wuntvor books, hmm?)

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious and Side-splitting.......2002-01-09

One of the funniest series of books I have ever read, it is also a contender for most often read/lent as well. Although I don't, as a rule, like 'funny fantasy', I am very glad I didn't turn my nose up at this. It is great to see this back in print. If you have even a tiny sense of humor and like fantasy, this book (and the rest in the series) will keep you in stitches. Especially the 'book excerpts' at the beginning of each chapter.

      5 out of 5 stars Brownie mania!!.......1998-10-18

This book was absolutely hilarious! I especially loved the part with the multitude of Brownies! I highly recommend this book to anybody who can find it. It's great for a laugh (make that a barrel of laughs)!

One of the dirty secrets of the fitness world is that for all the talk about the importance of stretching, many athletes and other fit people don't bother with it. It's hard to gauge the benefits, and it seems as if the time could be better spent running, lifting weights, or perfecting sports skills. This sentiment is expressed by Dr. Bob Arnot in the foreword to "The Whartons' Stretch Book," and he says that the Whartons changed his mind. He went to them with a stiffened hip that he thought needed surgery, but after a regimen using the active-isolated stretching technique, his flexibility in that hip had increased 40 percent.

Active-isolated stretching is very different from what your high-school gym teacher made you do. Rather than holding a stretch for a half-minute, you hold it for just two seconds. This prevents the muscle from activating an instinctual braking device to keep itself from overstretching. Traditional stretching forces that braking to occur, and the Whartons think that's not only counterproductive, but dangerous. If you force too deep a stretch while the muscle is doing all it can to keep itself from being stretched, something's got to give. And a torn muscle will repair itself with scar tissue, ultimately making that muscle less flexible.

The Whartons--a father-and-son personal-training team who've worked with many pro athletes and Olympic medalists--show you how to use their stretches to prepare for dozens of sports, from aerobics to wrestling. Nonathletes get an entire section of the book, which describes stretch routines to get your body feeling better after prolonged driving, sitting, standing, and word processing. The routines are a bit on the longish side--20 minutes or more--but it doesn't seem like much time when you think of how long you have to live in your body, and how much better it will feel if you keep it supple and flexible. --Lou Schuler

                    Book Description

Whether you're a serious competitor or weekend warrior, you know that proper stretching before and after your workout can improve your performance, increase your flexibility, help prevent injury, and make you feel better. But did you know that the traditional way of stretching -- lock your knees, bounce, hold, hurt, hold longer -- actually makes muscles tighter and more prone to injury?

There's a new and better way to stretch: Active-Isolated Stretching. And with The Whartons' Stretch Book,  the method used successfully by scores of professional, amateur, and Olympic athletes is now available to everyone.

This groundbreaking technique, developed by researchers, coaches, and trainers, and pioneered by Jim and Phil Wharton, is your new exercise prescription. The routine is simple: First, you prepare to stretch one isolated muscle at a time. Then you actively contract the muscle opposite the isolated muscle, which will then relax in preparation for its stretch. You stretch it gently and quickly -- for no more than two seconds -- and release it before it goes into its protective contraction. Then you repeat. Simple, but the results are outstanding. The Whartons' Stretch Book explains it all.

Part I contains the Active-Isolated Stretch Catalog, with fully illustrated, easy-to-follow stretches for each of five body zones, from neck and shoulders to trunk, arms, and legs -- over fifty stretches in all. Part II offers specific stretching prescriptions for over fifty-five sports and activities, from running, tennis, track, and aerobics to skiing, skating, and swimming. You'll also find advice on stretching for daily activities such as driving, working at a desk, lifting, and keyboarding. Part III discusses stretching for life, with specific recommendations for expectant mothers and older athletes. It also includes specific stretching exercises that could help you avoid unnecessary surgery.

Give Active-Isolated Stretching a try for three weeks. You'll never go back to your old stretching routines again.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a lifesaver.......2007-07-29

I bought this book after injuring my shoulder. My arm had locked to the point I could barely move it. Any attempt to move the arm resulted in extreme pain. I did the exercizes every day, and after a few weeks, the scar tissue began to break, motion returned and the pain eventually ceased. Other reviews say 20 minutes a day is "too much" time. Are they kidding? Twenty minutes out of 24 hours? Years later my bicycle was hit by a careless truck driver. My left shoulder, elbow, hip and hand/wrist were injured. The hand needed surgery to remove a bone. The wrist and hand developed arthritis. Because I keep doing the exercises, and have incorporated the strengthening exercises, I am not crippled. I still ride my bicycle, work in the yard, and do what I did before. If this book isn't "scientific" then why do physical therapists and doctors recommend it?

4 out of 5 stars Older folks need to stretch - Wharton shows us how........2007-07-16

I've been hearing about the increased role of stretching in a person's fitness routine as they age, but didn't know much more than a few basic stretches. The Wharton's provide scores of stretching routines, grouped by body area. More importantly, they teach the proper procedure so your body does not counteract the stretching, which would waste your time. Diagrams are provided, they may be a little tough to figure out. I use this book every week to lead my stretching routine.

2 out of 5 stars Poor illustrations make book almost unusable.......2007-07-03

The pencil drawings are terrible. In the pictures requiring you to bend your knees, it's almost impossible to tell whether to bend the knee toward the chest, at a right angle from the body, etc. The text doesn't help clarify matters in most cases, and besides, if I'm actually doing the stretches, I don't want to take the time to read the wordy descriptions.

The "sports-specific" section is anything but. For the most part, they instruct you do to all the stretches, maybe in varying order. Far too time consuming for most people.

Finally, I found it quite difficult in some cases to "contract the opposite muscle" to make the stretch effective. And in any case, I find that focusing on the opposite muscle contracting takes the enjoyment out of feeling the stretch.

3 out of 5 stars It helps to get the DVD.......2007-05-19

Gave the book 3 stars just because I too was having problems figuring out the exercises in the book and decided to get their DVD. The DVD takes out all of the guess work and gives you 48 mintues of great exercises. Book: 3 Stars. DVD: 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Good book but..........2006-11-05

I love the Whartons approach to the back and general physical health-but the "stretch book" does not have as good pictures as the "Back Book" It is unnecessary to have both. The Back Book is great. It is not just for back pain, but any minor aches and pains. I am a Family Practice Physcian and reccomend all my patients who have back problems or want to start a sensible exercise program to use this book. Highly reccomended program and it works!! Any one from skinny to obese from children to octogenarians can benefit from this program.
