Book Description

The two sandstone monoliths towering over the southern Colorado landscape are wrapped in ancient mystery. To the local tribes, they are the Twin War Gods, sons of the moon goddess, White Shell Woman. Legends tell of strange happenings in their shadows, of lost treasure and Anasazi blood sacrifice. But it is a much more recent history that troubles former Ute policeman-turned-rancher Charlie Moon, specifically the fresh corpse of a young Native American woman unearthed at an archaeological dig.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Poor Man's Tony Hillerman.......2003-03-22

The dust jacket quotes the Denver Post: "Doss does for the Utes what Tony Hillerman has done for the Navajo [sic]." Well, not quite. I enjoyed reading "White Shell Woman," and look forward to reading other Charlie Moon Mysteries, but not quite as eagerly as I look forward to the next Tony Hillerman book. But who knows? Maybe some day Doss will equal or even surpass Hillerman. I hope he does. After all, there are never too many excellent writers, and James Doss shows promise of better things to come.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Carl Hiaasen, but..........2003-03-10

I bought this book because I read the reviews saying he was part Carl Hiaasen, part Tony Hillerman -- well, I find Mr. Doss a LOT closer to Hillerman than to Hiaasen. I laugh my way through Hiaasen's books, and that didn't happen here, although there were a few moments when I laughed out loud.

The first 100 pages were slow going, and I almost gave up, until the book started to get into stride. The second hundred pages have been pretty quick and the third hundred pages are racing by. So, the book is worth it if you can make it past the first 100 pages.

Daisy Perika, the Ute elder shamaness who is Charlie Moon's aunt (Charlie Moon is the central character in this series of books) is the best character in the book and worth the read altogether. I'd like to read more about her, so I'm probably going to buy more of this series.

Doss has an annoying habit of using half sentences that should be employed rarely for effect rather than all the time. Things like "Which was the idea." or "And that was the idea."

So, he's not Carl Hiaasen by any stretch of the imagination, but he's good and I'm glad I picked up the book. Entertaining, even if you have to go on the web and look up some Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico geographic locations. Doss assumes we know where or what the Columbine is (other than a flower or a high school).

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable mix of Indian shamanism and police procedure.......2002-05-02

Charlie Moon is retired from the Reservation Police but when murder strikes a beautiful Ute woman, he can't help being interested--especially when the tribal leaders ask him to return to work part time as a private investigator. Without the politics of the local police, he has an ideal situation--at least as far as work goes. As far as his ranch, his psychic aunt, and his love life go, things are not so great.

Legends of an ancient Anasazi treasure have haunted the Utes for years. Now someone is digging, disturbing the remains of buried Indians and the work of the archeologists trying to uncover the history of this region. Simply disturbing archeological sites is bad enough, but when one of the students is murdered, rumors start to spread about the ghosts of the Anasasi protecting their treasures and of a shape-shifter walking the ruins. Moon doesn't believe in shape-shifters--although his aunt certainly does. But when the uncle of the victim disappears leaving nothing but his clothes, his dentures, and a pile of ashes and bone chips, Moon is certain that the mystic forces his aunt can't leave alone are somehow involved.

Author James D. Doss (click here to see booksforabuck.com reviews of other novels by this author) combines a fine touch for characters (especially Moon's aunt), respect for the Native American heritage that makes up so critical an element in his stories, and pure adventure to deliver a fine light read. Charlie Moon is a sympathetic character now blessed with a ranch that can't make a nickle, a dog that steals anything he tries to eat, an aunt who can't help being cranky, and a girlfriend who seems to show up only at the worst possible moment.

Fans of the Charlie Moon series will definitely want to read this one. Tony Hillerman fans who haven't discovered Doss will be overjoyed by this addition to the short list of excellent authors writing Native American mystery.

      Book Description

There is a part of the Forest where it is always night, where the tall trees bow together to shut out the light. Men call it the Darkwood. The border fort on the edge of the Darkwood had been built to keep the peace. So far it had, but after delivery of a large consignment of gold it falls silent, answering neither natural nor supernatural communication. When the Forest King sends a small force, combining sorcerous and military skills, they find a deserted fortress soaked in blood. Magic reveals something malevolent and unreachable somewhere in the fort. But Duncan MacNeil and his company have human foes, greedy for gold, to deal with before they can take on the inhuman . . .

4 out of 5 stars Sets Pattern For Ghostworld and Hellworld.......2004-01-16

This is a sequel to Blue Moon Rising, but like Ghostworld and Hellworld, the character base has been trimmed from the epic to the contained.

The time is ten years after the Demon War (see Blue Moon Rising). A border fort was constructed to secure a border with Hillsdown. But now the fort has gone silent. A team of Rangers is sent to investigate.

Upon arrival at the fort it is obvious that there is something very wrong. Soon the Rangers must join with some bandits in order to survive a horror that threatens the whole world.

Dream sequences give a great personality profile for each character in a similar fashion to the flashbacks in Blue Moon Rising. While a direct sequel to the events of Blue Moon Rising, this is a tough and gritty tale that does not have the Rupert/Dragon/Julia/Unicorn brand of humor. But it is no less a good yarn.

If you like the Forest Kingdom books (or the Twilight of the Empire books), you should take quite well to this one.

      3 out of 5 stars a great book,.......2001-06-05

but not Green's best work; if you enjoyed Simon R. Green's Darkwood series, then I highly recommend that you read Shadows Fall, his best work to date.

3 out of 5 stars Reads like a movie novel..........2000-03-07

not the best Dark Wood story, in my opinion. But if you enjoyed Blue Moon Rising and Blood and Honor, you will still enjoy Down Among the Dead Men. Its just an interesting little side story in the Dark Wood series. be forewarned, its pretty gritty and gory...

5 out of 5 stars excellent surreal fiction.......1999-02-21

Though not as grand-scale and plot-involved as Green's other works, this book takes an interesting turn--Green focuses the plotline around the psychology of the main characters, the result being one of the most insightful and fascinating pieces of surreal fiction I've read. Green retains he dramatic talents and smooth writing, and the reader is hooked form the first chapter on an incredibly involving drama of the mind. And yet, throughout, none of the sword-and-sorcery classic fantasy element is lost.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderfully disgusting story of death and destruction.......1997-11-11

This was an extreamly well written story, however the subject matter can leave some people a little queasy. The plot is excellent and the story is a non-stop suspense filled adventure. Blood and horror fill every page and readers will be torn between dropping the book in horror and disgust, and turning the next page to read on. Simon Green reaches into man's nightmares and brings them to life in this novel!

5 out of 5 stars Mark Millar is a god among men.......2005-11-21

I don't want to toot this horn again but man, Mark Millar just blows me away every time. I read his Wanted earlier this year and his run on the Ultimates has been amazing. But this Marvel Knights Spiderman run is just fantastic. He breathes new life and new excitement into a character with too many titles. He is an amazing character writer and Peter just leaps off the page as the tragic hero that he is. Aunt May and the villans and hottie Mary Jane just crackle and sizzle with life.

All I can say is that if you are an adult Spiderman fan, then you've got to be reading this book and the rest of the first 12 issues. This is good writing, dark characters, violent action, and nitty-gritty goodness.

      'Nuff said!

5 out of 5 stars Just plain amazing (no pun intended).......2004-10-04

With Marvel pretty much letting loose on Spider-Man mania with a host of different Spidey-titles, this newly launched title, under the Marvel Knights banner, finds the web head getting the most brutal beatdown he's had in years, courtesy of Mark Millar. Next to J. Michael Straczynski's current unheralded reign on Amazing Spider-Man, Millar's Spidey title is one of Marvel's best top selling books. Beginning with Peter Parker finding the grave of his beloved Uncle Ben vandalized, and following with Aunt May getting kidnapped, it's become more than clear that somebody knows Peter's secret. Did the Green Goblin reveal to his fellow supervillains Pete's identity? What does the Owl have to gain? Why do Electro and Vulture have a rather large suitcase full of cash? And just who's side is the Black Cat really on? If there's one drawback to Down Among the Dead Men, it's that it leaves you on a heck of a cliffhanger after the wall crawler gets his keyster handed to him in a high voltage battle with Electro. Millar has taken villains like Electro and Vulture to heights the characters haven't been to in decades; we see them go to no limits to take out Spidey, even if that means taking out an innocent or two that gets in their way. The art by the same team Millar worked with on the Trouble mini-series (Terry and Rachel Dodson) is just gorgeous with Mary Jane looking like the knockout she's supposed to be. The book may be too short (this collects a four part storyarc) but it's definitely worth picking up, and by the time you get to the last page you'll be salivating for more.

        Book Description

This volume traces a season in the life of Manchester City. Not just any season, but 1998-99, when the club found itself down among the dead men of English football. This once-proud club, with two League Championships and four FA Cups to its name, was forced to battle with the likes of Macclesfield Town, Colchester United, and Wigan Athletic in English football's third flight. With the cooperation of the club itself, Mark Hodkinson was allowed to mingle with players, ex-players, directors, office staff, and fans, to conduct numerous interviews with the people who form the passionate community of Manchester City. Hodkinson was involved in every aspect of the club through a long, stirring season, constantly on the look-out for the unusual, the offbeat, the hopeful and the heartbreaking. Through it all, he sought to remain impartial, and resist the temptation of becoming another facet of the club's PR operation.

        5 out of 5 stars Really enjoyable.......2003-09-18

Chief Inspector Henry Tibbett and his wife Emmy are spending a couple of weeks vacationing with some friends on board their yacht Ariadne. This one, unlike some Dead Men Don't Ski and others, really does start about as a vacation, but before long, he's interested in the recent drowning of local sailor Pete Rawnsley. Something about the death just doesn't sound right to Henry. He's also interested in recent jewel robbery in the area. Before long, another murder convinces him that the two are related. Now the question is, can he save Emmy from being the next victim?

I enjoyed this book a lot. You don't have to be sailor to like it, but if you knew something about boats (I don't) you'd probably enjoy it more. I still really liked it. I like the whole series and I wish that more of Moyes books were still in print.

                    Book Description

In a book likely to transform how parents manage many of their child's daily struggles, Drs. Smith and Gouze explain the central and frequently unrecognized role that sensory processing problems play in a child's emotional and behavioral difficulties. Practicing child psychologists, and themselves parents of children with sensory integration problems, their message is innovative, practical, and, above all, full of hope.

A child with sensory processing problems overreacts or underreacts to sensory experiences most of us take in stride. A busy classroom, new clothes, food smells, sports activities, even hugs can send such a child spinning out of control. The result can be heartbreaking: battles over dressing, bathing, schoolwork, social functions, holidays, and countless other events. In addition, the authors say, many childhood psychiatric disorders may have an unidentified sensory component.

                    Readers Will Learn:

The result: a happier childhood, a more harmonious family, and a more cooperative classroom. This thoroughly researched, useful, and compassionate guide will help families start on a new path of empowerment and success.

It is very informative. It explains what is going on through the childs eyes as well as the frustrations that we as parents are going through with such a situation. It has made me better aware of the symtoms and how to deal with them. It also lets me know that my son is not alone in his struggles and it has been identified as a "real" issue, not just what a lot of people like to say is just an excuse as to why your child is misbehaving. I appreciated the input and am making a doctor's appointment next week in order to try and work on my son's sensory issues. I am extremely thankful that I found this book to purchase and read.

5 out of 5 stars The Sensory Sensitive Child.......2006-11-17

The Sensory Sensitive Child is one of the best books I have read on the subject. It truly helps explain what the child and families may be going through and gives practical solutions for dealing with sensory processing disorder. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars What EVERY parent should know about their special child!.......2006-11-04

As I started reading this book, a light bulb went off...either someone absolutely knew my granddaughter, from the inside out, or I wasn't alone anymore!! WOW! This book, is full of information, suggestions, and in general REALLY GOOD help for anyone who lives with a child with Sensory Integration Dysfunction. Key message...YOU'RE NOT ALONE...and HELP IS AVAILABLE!

This is a fantastic book. My second daughter (now aged 7) has global and verbal dyspraxia (motor planning). We have been to many specialists for diagnosis. We have been in speech therapy since she was 2 1/2. We have had some OT, but not as much as is discussed in this book. We have been searching for ideas and answers, reading books, etc for most of her life. This book is the absolute best I have read for describing "What is it like, being a sensory-sensitive child and also a parent of a sensory-sensitive child. A Child whose world is not near as easy as it is for ordinary children." This book offers insight, relief, excellent advice and reasonable hope that you, as a parent, can make a significant improvement in your child's life. It is also very readable (many of these types of books are hard to finish). Thank-you, Thank-you, Thank-you, Karen and Karen. Well Done.

4 out of 5 stars Mother of a Sensory Kid.......2006-08-03

This book is a good primer for parents of kids with sensory processing disorder. Book is organized well and is an easy read. The book describes the characteristics of this disorder in segments which makes it easy to use it as a reference guide. The book does not offer a lot of ideas to help with sensory diet (keeping your kid happy and meeting his/her needs)--for that I recommend, Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun.

                        Book Description

Mark F. Sohn's classic book, Mountain Country Cooking, was a James Beard Award nominee in 1997. In Appalachian Home Cooking, Sohn expands and improves upon his earlier work by using his extensive knowledge of cooking to uncover the romantic secrets of Appalachian food, both within and beyond the kitchen. The foods of Appalachia are the medium for the history of a creative culture and a proud people. This is the story of pigs and chickens, corn and beans, and apples and peaches as they reflect the culture that has grown from the region's topography, climate, and soil. Sohn unfolds the ways of a table that blends Native American, Eastern European, Scotch-Irish, black, and Hispanic influences to become something new—and uniquely American.

Sohn shows how food traditions in Appalachia have developed over two centuries from dinner on the grounds, church picnics, school lunches, and family reunions as he celebrates regional signatures such as dumplings, moonshine, and country ham. Food and folkways go hand in hand as he examines wild plants, cast-iron cookware, and the nature of the Appalachian homeplace.

Appalachian Home Cooking celebrates mountain food at its best. In addition to a thorough discussion of Appalachian food history and culture, Sohn offers over eighty classic recipes, as well as mail-order sources, information on Appalachian food festivals, photographs, poetry, a glossary of Appalachian and cooking terms, menus for holidays and seasons, and a list of the top 100 Appalachian foods.

                        5 out of 5 stars A great ethnic cookbook.......2007-03-04

Appalachia is one of the poorest areas of the country economically but one of the richest areas in terms of heritage, culture, scenery, and food. This cookbook is much more than a collection of old-timey recipes, it is a glimpse of the cuisine that nourishes the people of this unique American region.

4 out of 5 stars Appalachain Home Cooking.......2006-08-21

I have not been able to read the entire book yet, but what I have read is very interesting. Some of the foods I have never heard of or seen. The food that the mountaineers have prepared seem very comforting. Will review more when I finish the book.

5 out of 5 stars Contemporary Appalachian Cooking.......2006-01-23

Luckily for twenty-first century cooks, the trend in cookbooks is to contextualize. Where is the recipe from? How has it been adapted for the American cook? What is the history of this food? As a fan of Mark Sohn's food writing, I can attest to the fact that he's been doing this for fifteen years. His most recent book takes contextualization to a whole new level. By the end of the first section you feel like you've walked up the hollers of Central Appalachia and tasted the food made over the years.

In addition to the food culture and history, the book is packed with signature Sohn recipes-easy to follow and concise. There are no extra steps in the Chocolate Gravy recipe and you know just how long it is going to take from start to finish.

As an avid cookbook reader and lover of Appalachian culture, Appalachian Home Cooking adds a whole new layer to my understanding of the region.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Book with Delicious Recipes.......2006-01-20

Culinary histories like this one don't come along every day. I have read this book several times, and I never cease to enjoy it. It is well written and is both informative and entertaining.

My older sister, who is a very good Appalachian cook from eastern Kentucky, received a copy for Christmas and she said it has helped her reminisce about her childhood days. She still cooks many of the basics but she had forgotten about some of the foods we used to eat when we were growing up, so she is happy to have this collection of recipes on her shelf.

Mark doesn't leave out anything. He tells us everything we could possibly want to know about the foods he shares. If you have any connection to the Appalachian area, whether you were born here and have lived here all your life or you left early in life and have only a grandmother still residing here, this book is a must-have. It doesn't even matter whether you want to cook (though, believe me, you will want to try many of these recipes), you will want this book for the food descriptions themselves.

If you have no connection at all to Appalachia, then you will want to buy the book because you can learn a great deal about our foods and our culture--as well as enjoy the recipes. Vegetables, side dishes, school lunches, herbs and game, chicken, lamb, breakfast foods, sauces, salads and soups, and sweet treats--they're all here, waiting for you to get into the kitchen, alone or with your family and friends, and whip up something delightful.

The book is wonderfully indexed and has gorgeous pictures of tantalizing foods. You will find mail-order sources and a glossary of terms to help you understand anything that is new or different to you.

This book is a treasure. I would suggest you click on "Add to cart" now! And for further information about the book, click on Sohn's web page at www.marksohn.com .

5 out of 5 stars Culture and cuisine come together.......2006-01-14

This book is a treasure trove of authentic recipes, stories, music and folklore that celebrate the Appalachian region. The book makes the food and the people who cook it come alive. It's as though someone's grandmother opened her recipe box, her home and her heart to us. Anyone who appreciates a heartfelt study of how history, culture and cuisine come together to define a region will love Appalachian Home Cooking.
