Book Description
Escaping the city and its violence, ex-cop Jeff "J. W." Jackson found solace in fishing, cooking, and simplyenjoying life on Martha's Vineyard -- and nothing, he figures, will ever entice him to leave. However, suddenly there's a very real possibility that his lady love Zee will be departing the idyllic island forever. And when a young student commits suicide, and a girlfriend-abusing thug starts spewing vicious threats, J. W. seriously considers a temporary escape from paradise. But it's a failed trio of attempts on his own life that ultimately propels him off-island -- and onto the trail of a stalker that's leading Jackson to the perilous peaks of the Colorado Rockies, where he quickly learns that, thorns and all, there's no place quite like his Vineyard home.

Another Keeper.......2005-08-30
As always, Philip Craig kept me enthralled. I have never been to the Vineyard but based on the author's descriptive writing I know I could find my way around the island. The ending is always a surprise. Craig's books never disappoint me. Definitely a keeper.
Title Change.......2004-08-24
I absolutely agree with Mr. Wells! Changing the title of the book is sneaky - if I hadn't read the reviews, I would never have known that this books is actually "Cliff Hanger" which I just finished reading. While the book is quite good, I am very annoyed that the published appears to be trying to pull a fast one!
Cliff Hanger.......2004-07-25
This book is also known as Cliff Hanger. it says what it was published as at the bottom of the book. Great book got me hooked on the series!!!
A great read!.......2004-06-03
I would like to say that this is an excellent book--as are all of Craig's books I've read so far. They make me feel as though I'm right there on the island with J.W. and Zee, and it gives me a glimpse of what life is like on the East Coast.
And this book is a RE-issue--the author is NOT merely trying to pass off a previous book as a new one. "Cliff Hanger"--the 4th book in Craig's Martha's Vineyard series--is out of print, and has been re-issued as "Vineyard Fear"--it says so right on the front cover of the book.
If you love a protagonist who's a bit of a wiseacre and a book that will keep you guessing AND make you chuckle, then Philip Craig is the guy for you.
Duplicate Titles.......2004-05-18
I have a real problem with the author changing the title of a book and then trying to pass it off as a new book!!! Show me any difference between the book called Vineyard Fear and the original book called Cliff Hanger. This is the third time he has done this. I really enjoy Philip Craig,s books but find this practice disgraceful.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Bedwyr, Arthur's last remaining knight, didn't do what he was asked.
Some time later he comes into contact with a younger man, a descendant of Arthur. Although aging, he is asked to help with the fight against the Saxons because of his skills and knowledge.
The Last Pendragon is a Superb Read!.......2003-03-24
King Arthur is dying and he commands Bedwyr to throw Excalibur into the lake as his last request. Bedwyr disobeys and hides the sword for another time thinking that Arthur may be healed of his wounds and have need of it again. Well, Arthur doesn't recover and eleven years later Bedwyr returns from fighting for Rome to right the wrong he committed. However, one thing leads to another and he finds himself being asked by Irion, Arthur's grandson to help fight against the Saxons. Irion is the son of Medraut, but is in no way like him. He resembles Arthur in both appearance and personality. Bedwyr refuses, saying that Britain's troubles are no longer his and continues to search for Excalibur. As Bedwyr continues on his quest to find Excalibur Irion tries to find a way for the Britains to reclaim Britain and Camelot. Will their two paths cross again?
The story is exciting and never lets up. The ending is climatic and engaging! It's just too bad it's only 209 pages long. I was sad to see it end! This was an excellent novel and didn't find any discrepancies concerning history because this was more an alternate historical fantasy novel and leaves the author much license to do with his story as he pleases. It is out-of-print but I had no trouble obtaining a copy and can't recommend this book highly enough!
A great book.......2001-04-21
I read a lot of books over the summer, and tis was one of the best. Rice uses ton of historical information to write a fiction story about a time clouded in mystery. The descriptions and battles are colorful and enthralling. Too bad it's out of print...
A worthy addition to the "Historical Arthur" genre........1999-08-03
Being a first-time author, Rice has wisely (I think) avoided trying to give another retelling of the whole Arthurian saga. Instead, he has written a tale set some ten years after Arthur's death, in which the main characters are Bedwyr, Guinevere and Medraut's son (Arthur's grandson) Irion. He tells how the warring Britons manage to hold off the Saxons for a little longer, and also gives the origin for the myth that Arthur is sleeping until needed by his people again. I found the climax both exciting and moving. There are a few historical howlers, but on the whole the times are created quite well, especially with Justinian's reconquest of Italy being brought to the fore at the beginning of the book. Its not the best book I've ever read, but if you collect good historical (not fantasy) novels about the Arthurian period then add this one to your collection.

The day of Camelot grows thin. The glory of King Arthur's realm fades as his body passes into the earth. The light dims, the shadows lengthen. A great rebellion is rising to tear down the God-breathed throne of Arthur Pendragon. A man consumed with darkness is coming to claim his vengeance at any cost. The ghosts of the past rise to haunt the present. A time of darkness is coming, when men will pray for the sun and beg for release from the night, and neither will be found. Death, betrayal, and sorrow ride from the abyss toward Castle Camelot while swords of good men are brought to bear against evil. To face the darkness, a leader must rise to unite the land of Camelot - a king from the line of Arthur, a man of strength in spirit and body...the Last Pendragon.

The best book I have ever read!!!.......2006-10-26
Wow this book was amazing. I am a huge fan of King Aurther and this book fulfilled all the exciment I was looking for and then some. This book is a must read for anyone who is into mid-evil literture.
The Last Pendragon-A Riveting Tale of Arthur II!.......2003-02-17
This book tells the tale of the continuation of the Pendragon line and of Arthur II named for his famous ancestor, the original Arthur.
Death and deceit await Arthur II at every turn. He never knows who he can trust and his reign begins even before he is crowned the new king of Camelot. Rebellions and hardship follow but the people of Arthur's realm continue to fight back for the last of the Pendragons.
This tale was an exciting read, a real page turner! Anyone who follows Arthurian Literature will quickly be enamored of this book written by the author when he was only 15 years old! I hope we hear more from him! Outstanding first effort! (However, the typos at times were very distracting and the book needs to be cleaned up in this regard).

If smoked salmon and cream cheese omelets, sautéed jumbo shrimp, and double-patty burgers suit your palate, belly up to the Protein Power diet: "Not a high protein diet" but "an adequate protein diet." Doctors Michael R. and Mary Dan Eades make a persuasive case in favor of "the diet we were meant to eat."
Similar to Dr. Robert Atkins's New Diet Revolution, the authors cite insulin as the main culprit in weight gain and expound the benefits of a diet extremely low in carbohydrates. Carbohydrates, which are changed into sugar during digestion, stimulate the body to store fat, making weight loss virtually impossible. The most revolutionary idea put forth in Protein Power is that the fat you eat has very little bearing on the fat you gain: in other words, we aren't what we eat after all. Researchers have found that eating larger portions of protein in conjunction with severely reduced portions of carbohydrates causes people to burn the excess fat stored in their bodies.
Protein Power is packed with helpful charts and formulas, so you can estimate your body-fat percentage and your ideal weight for your particular body composition. There are worksheets to calculate your protein need and carbohydrate and protein equivalency charts, as well as charts that allow you to track your fat and weight loss. But this book is not all grams and percentages: it also shows you what a day of eating on this diet would look like and includes sample menus and 70 pages of recipes. If you've been starving yourself for years and just can't seem to lose weight, this may be the diet for you. --Jhana Bach
Book Description
Lose weight, feel fitter, lower your cholesterol, and enjoy the foods you never thought you'd eat again! A rasher of bacon, a juicy steak, a wedge of cheese, a buttery omelet...Now, a team of pioneering doctors shows you how their groundbreaking, protein-rich eating plan succeeds where low-fat diets fail-- to help you take off the weight and achieve optimal health naturally, without counting fat grams, without worrying about fat percentages, and without going up the foods you love! Finally, a diet you can live with that works.
PROTEIN POWER
Based on cutting-edge research, this revolutionary, medically sound, deliciously satisfying plan has already helped thousands of patients lose weight and achieve other lifesaving health benefits, including lower cholesterol and blood pressure readings and an improvement or reversal of common disorders such as heart disease, adult-onset diabetes, and gout. Developed by Doctors Michael and Mary Dan Eades, the simple regimen calls for a new way of eating: a protein-rich, moderate-fat, low-carbohydrate diet that will have you feeling better and more energetic within a week, and correct blood sugar levels, high blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol within three weeks.
Here, the Eades show you why their plan is so potent: how it works with your body's metabolic biochemistry; how it brings powerful metabolic hormones, including insulin, into balance; and why this balance is necessary to achieve permanent weight loss and free you from reliance on costly and dangerous medications to control blood pressure and cholesterol.
Divided into two phases, one for those who need to lose 20 percent of their body weight or more, and the other for those closer to their ideal weight who simply wish to recompose their muscle-fat ratio and embark on a healthier lifestyle, the Eades' regimen relies on a tasty, filling, nutritionally complete diet that even allows for the consumption of alcohol-- in moderation. Their breakthrough system of counting carbohydrates gives you many more food options than other low-carbohydrate programs. And they accompany their diet with an invaluable program of strength-building exercises and tips for maintaining motivation. To help you put their plan into action, the Eades provide:
* complete, satisfying meal plans, suitable for family dinners or formalentertaining
* a Daily Meal Outline to keep track of your food selections
* tips on making the best selections at fine restaurants or fast food chains
* a minicookbook filled with nearly 100 easy-to-prepare and tasty recipes, from TexMex Cheese Flan with Chunky Salsa and Coconut Salmon to Irish Lace Cookie and Chocolate Chip Cheesecake
* ways to modify the foods you love the most to make them fit your diet plan
* recipes for snack foods that can actually improve your health
* supplements that will jump-start your metabolism to burn fat
* a rapid recovery program for planned celebrations or holiday overindulgence
If you've been living the low-fat, no-fat way and still haven't lost weight (or been able to maintain weight loss), still have elevated blood pressure and cholesterol still feel fatigued and bloated--stop blaming yourself! Instead, turn to the Eades' breakthrough eating plan and let them help you regain your health and vitality--and show you how to maintain these benefits for a lifetime.

A WONDERFUL BOOK WITH LOTS OF INFO ON PROTIEN DIETING, AND MUCH MORE!.......2007-09-13
This is an excellent book that has lots of information for the person that wants to cut carbs and go a high protien diet. It has a lot of information inside and I am still refering to it. I will say this, after reading this and the Dr. Atkins books, I realized that for me, I need at least 30 carbs a day or I feel like someone ran over me with a truck. However, that said, I will say that in my opinion, the High Protien diets work as I have lost 12 pounds in 3 weeks and I am just 10 pounds of being at my previously "skinny weight". The best thing I have found in addition to this book is after I reach my goal soon, I will continue this life-style change of eating high protien foods and also adding more green vegetables to my daily foods. So more eating for health as well as watching my weight! And, I do not intend to ever eat any white breads, white flour or white sugar. This book has opened up my eyes to proper eating!
The Protein and Dieting Revolution in the USA and the world.......2007-09-08

Lot Of Information Packed In a Little Book!.......2007-07-07
I was already a low carber for life before I bought this book. I started Atkins in 2001. I lost 86 pounds on it. I was looking for a new exercise regime. I found Slow Burn, which led me to Protein Power.
The Drs. Eades took the low carbohydrate lifestyle a step or two farther than Dr. Atkins, and came up with Protein Power. There is an unbelievable amount of science in this book. I brushed up on my low carb lifestyle, relearned some things, learned some new things (many new things).
If you have wondered about low carb, or maybe you heard Atkin's was bad (it's not), or you are just curious, this is a great book.
Ever wondered what all that sugar you are eating really does to you? So much, I couldn't even begin to paraphrase. That was just an example. This book will tell you EVERYTHING that sugar can do to you and why!
What vitamins and minerals are you probably deficient in? This book will tell you.
So much information in such a small package.
Great information on eating right........2007-05-15
Follow the advice on eating right in this book and you'll feel great all the time.
The authors leave no doubt: this is the healthiest way to eat!.......2007-04-06
And very fortunately, the best way to loose weight! As Voltaire said: "Every man is the creature of the age in which he lives; very few are able to raise themselves above the ideas of the time." One need only read the negative reviews of this book to see an illustration of this phenomenon. Most physicians, laymen, government groups and medical groups following the well worn path of least resistance, have parroted the accepted collective wisdom of the "establishment" mouthpieces: our diets should be based on a low fat paradigm. The only problem is they are wrong, dead wrong as it turns out. And in their bovine refusal to acknowledge the evidence demonstrating conclusively the failure of their approach they have done a grave disservice to the public. That's us folks!
I am a physician. All my professional life I was steeped in the disinformation regarding low fat diets. And I kept getting fatter and fatter and fatter. Then a friend told me about the low carbohydrate approach to loosing weight. At first I scoffed and rejected out of hand such an outlandish diet. But finally, desperation forced me to at least take a look at this "counterintuitive" approach.
And I was delighted that I did! I managed to loose a whopping 16 pounds the first two weeks of the diet. Needless to say I was and am flabbergasted! But my weight loss has slowed substantially since those first two weeks and I am reading the Eades book more carefully in an attempt to get back on track. In particular I've just started limiting my portion size and making sure I don't eat too much protein. This seems to have kick started my weight loss and I am merrily on my way. Remember, restricting portion sizes and protein levels is NOT difficult since fats have the effect of producing satiety and since you are no longer ingesting carbs your insulin levels are no longer whipsawing your glucose levels. In other words, your food is not longer sabotaging your diet! Your food is actually working FOR you instead of against you.
And how does the diet accomplish this miraculous feat? By harnessing the body's own physiology to work in concert with your objectives. Sort of like letting the body have YOUR own way! The objective of the Eades approach (and all low carb approaches) is to reign in the out of control insulin levels which can wreak havoc with your body and health causing hypertension, heart disease, hyperlipidemia (high blood cholesterol), and excessive fat storage (obesity!).
Many have stated that when they go off the diet they gain the weight back. Well DUH! This is a practical and lifelong approach to keeping the weight off. But you must restrict the amount of carbs in your diet for this approach to work. Otherwise you'll be back to your old addictive habits in no time with all the attendant health risks.
I ingest fewer carbs than are allowed by the Eades and find I am able to more easily stay on this dietary plan. By increasing my carb levels I am simply "playing with fire." I am VERY susceptible to the siren's song of carbohydrates. By reducing my portion size and amount of protein I seem to have accelerated the weight loss.
Now there are those naysayers who whine and bellyache that they can't stay on the diet or that they feel too deprived or that they are nauseous, or that they are weak or blah, blah, blah blah blah. THESE symptoms are due to WITHDRAWAL from carbohydrates and it is your body trying to sabotage your dietary changes. Hang in there! And then there are some (VERY few) on whom the diet does not work. Honestly we shouldn't be surprised since quite obviously not all physiologies are alike! But for the overwhelming majority, this diet works great. If you love to eat, hate to count calories, want to improve your overall health and want an approach that WILL work and more importantly that you CAN LIVE with - then this is the diet for you.
I've willingly accepted the benefits of this dietary approach and understand that in order to maintain my health and weight I must eat like this for the remainder of my life. The first step for you will be to accept the fact that you are a carboholic! But by going cold turkey, you will gain control of your cravings within 2 to 21 (only in rare cases) days.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention. I feel great. No more post meal energy crashes. And I feel 20 years younger. I honestly had forgotten how easily I used to move around. You owe it to yourself and your loved ones to at least read this book. And if you don't find the Eades approach to your liking there are plenty of other low carb approaches: Atkins, Neanderthin, South Beach, Carbohydrate Addict's Diet, and Sugar Busters. In my opinion, the best are Atkins and Protein Power.
Good luck, and keep an open mind. It may just set you free.

Customer Reviews:
My all-time favorite cookbook!.......2007-05-18
A friend of mine contributed one of the recipes to this book, and gave me a copy. Upon discovering it on Amazon, I ordered copies for many friends -- all of whom love it as much as I do.
This book is a collection of recipes from Neiman-Marcus's In Circle customers -- all of which were then carefully tested in Neiman-Marcus's renowned restaurant kitchens. As a result, everything is delectable and virtually fail-safe. I have tried many of the recipes, and have been unfailingly thrilled with the results.
Best of all, most of the contributors wrote brief descriptions of what makes their recipes so special and popular -- so the book is as much fun to read as to cook from, and virtually guarantees stellar results.
Although I own well over a thousand cookbooks, this remains my number one favorite. HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION!
Customer Reviews:
Loves to Cook.......2002-04-04
This has been my favorite cookbook for a long time! Every dish Ihave made from this book has been excellent and is easy to prepare. Party Steaks are the only way to cook fillets...it's a foolproof recipe and very impressive!! Party Ryes are a fav appetizer...everyone always asks for the recipe. I have so many cookbooks but this is always the one I go to. My sister has it too and we always compare notes.
One of my top favorite cookbooks; absolutely wonderful!.......2001-02-21
Although I have almost 2,000 cookbooks, this remains one of my all-time favorites, to which I turn again and again. I received a copy from a friend whose recipe was included in it -- and have since give copies to my own favorite people. Everything I have tried has been outstanding. The recipes were contributed by members of Neiman-Marcus's InCircle group of customers from all over the country, and almost all of the contributors included brief descriptions of the dishes, how they acquired the recipes, etc. They were then tested before publication. And all proceeds go to charity. I can't think of anything else I'd want in a cookbook -- delicious recipes, well-tested, described by the contributors, and all proceeds go to charity. And it ia a beautiful, professionally-printed book, to boot. VERY highly recommended.
The Best Cookbook Ever.......2001-02-14
This is far and away the best cookbook I have ever had the pleasure of cooking from. I am serious when I say that every recipe is wonderful and easy to assemble. There are some that have even become family staples and are made frequently. Anyone who loves to cook should have this on their shelves.
Chock full of wonderful recipes.......1999-04-06
Pure and Simple is full of great recipes. There are so many simple recipes in this book, as the title implies, yet many are also elegant dishes that are great for serving company. My shelves are full of cookbooks, but this one is the one I use the most!
Every recipe is a winner and I totally recommend it!.......1999-04-05
I received this book as a wedding gift 8 years ago from my little sister in my soroity. Unfortunately, it sat on my shelf for two years until I finally got around to trying one out. Well, the first recipe was easy (Lemon bars) and a hit. (which built my confidence as I wouldn't call myself The "Galloping Gournet") Anyway, every recipe I've made has been great and I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone...."seasoned or not" in the kitchen. I especially like the chicken recipes...and the Christmas Stew has become a family tradition each Christmas Eve. I think of my sorority sister Leslie, every time I use the book and consequently thank her again each year in my Christmas card for giving me such a wonderful gift that has lasted all these years. I'm only disappointed that Neiman Marcus never came out with another one! Cheers!
