Excellent book from an outstanding series. However, I already owned it by the original title. I would have bought it again if not from the warning in another review. Amazon and the publisher owe the customer better treatment than that.

My friend the enemy, part 2.......2006-04-13

After Toji's kiss Momo has mixed feelings. She wants to have enjoyed the moment, but her emotions are clouded by Sae's warnings that he is just a lecherous pervert, so she feels wrong about it all. But a surprise visit from Toji at Momo's home in the evening goes a long way to restore her faith in him...until Sae begins to unsettle everything again. She's pulling out every weapon in her arsenal to besmirch Momo's reputation, including telling Toji that a newly formed bruise on her cheek is from Momo hitting her after she saw Sae and Toji kissing one another.

The two want to make up, but with Sae's poisonous words entering both of their brains it becomes difficult to do. Suddenly, Toji is not coming to school and Momo is concerned that it might be because of their fight, though the rest of the class knows it's because he has appendicitis. When Kiley is the one to tell her the truth she rushes to Toji's side, to find Sae already there. Then things just go from bad to worse.

I am really starting to appreciate the subtle nuances of character development in this series. Momo is strong despite her self issues, and manages to stand up for herself often...just at the wrong times, usually when Sae has spent time blackening her name and Momo's reactions predictably follow the pattern of Sae's machinations. Sae is scheming, manipulative, conniving, and has no originality to her whatsoever... and yet she still manages to dominate a number of people in the story. Toji is hard to be sympathetic with at times, true he is being manipulated and doesn't know who to trust, however he is quick to believe the bad in people, so naturally he falls into Sae's scheming. And then there's Kiley, who though he is a lecher seems to be the one who legitimately cares about Momo... he is always there when she needs him, he is always worried about her feelings, but she is so quick to blow him off because of her "idealized" crush on Toji for too long... given the choice between the two I would have chosen Kiley long before this point...at least he is genuine and caring and accepts Momo with all her flaws that he never seems to see.

Overall, I am quickly getting addicted to this manga. This is high school angst at its juiciest, and I plan on reading the rest of the series as soon as is humanly possible.

The best yet.......2002-10-15

I gave this volume of the Peach Girl series five stars because it is the best of the first three. When the story starts, Sae has finally gotten what she wants; Momo and Toji have broken up. As if this is not enough, she enters Momo in the end of term swim meet... in every event. Not only will Momo be tanner than ever, but she will probably exhaust herself competing. To top it all off, Momo's classmates are crueler than ever. It's Kiley to the rescue, looking out for Momo no matter what... and all he wants in exchange is a ...hug?
The first part of this series comes to a grand climax in the last scene of this manga. For all Peach fans rooting for Momo, your heart will break and then you will cheer... buy the book if you want to know what I'm talking about. It will be well worth it.

Peach Girl #3.......2002-08-06

I'll try not to write a review with any spoilers in it, but you really do have to have read the first two novels in order to understand what's going on in this book. I buy the Peach Girl manga for two reasons: 1) the story is so close to highschool reality, that most of the time, it's hard not to understand what the characters are going through, and 2) Miwa Ueda's artwork is absolutely beautiful! Continuing from the last book, in part three, Sae is still working to make Momo's life a living hell, and there are few people who Momo can really trust anymore. Toji is beginning to smarten up, and Momo is being more friendly to Kiley. If you liked the previous two books, there's no reason why you shouldn't like this one.

And so the plot thickens..........2002-06-02

Great! Toji finally gets a clue, Kiley finally gets a hug, and Sae finally gets her comeuppance! It didn't quite satisfy my lust for vengeance, because Momo really does get terribly abused and I feel Sae should at least be hit by a truck, but there you have it. I also feel some crueler punishment for Toji is in order, as I harbor a deep grudge against him for his previous actions in books 1 and 2, but we'll see how it goes in book 4. Tantalizing and full of poignant moments, as well as some funny ones.

Impressive from start to end........2002-04-28

This was my favorite of the three published Peach Girl manga. The ending was satisfying, and they had a lot of good Kiley moments! If he's your favorite character, you'll love him more this time around.
In a way, this could be the end of the series, but there are a lot of unfinished questions, which you'll discover in the end of the book. If you thought that Momo ended up the underdog in the first two, you'll be satisfied with this one.

Exactly right.......2007-03-24

All self-help has the same message -- you can only make positive choices in your life if you can figure out what choices you are making without any thought and then changing course by adding understanding. Most processes expect you to figure out why you do what you do by yourself and then layer their method on top to solve your issues. This process has so many different ways to explore your old habits that you can not help but change and make better choices. My only caveat is that you read this book over a long period of time; perhaps one chapter a week to truly process all of the information.I also suggest reading that chapter before bed and letting your subconscious mull over its lessons overniight. Excellent!

Extremely insightful book.......2007-03-10

Here you will learn (among other things) the ABC method of raising your optimism (closely aligned with resiliency) which has the potential of curing what many people call "depression". This book is so important, that I selected it from among hundreds to use in a teleclass I am teaching to other coaches in the Professional Coaches Association of Michigan about Positive Psychology and Strengths-Based Organizations.

The book discusses the Resilience Factor index, a free online assessment that assesses your resilience along several factors. A very worthwhile book, to study as well as to simply read.

Extremely Practical Positive Psychology.......2007-03-09

This book does an excellent job of helping people to understand their thought processes, recognize when negative thought processes occur, and the tools to overcome these negative thoughts. The author describes how positive psychology helps individuals develop greater reserves of resilience to deal with life's inevitable obstacles. Reivich further provides wonderful advice on recognizing our core beliefs and how they often dictate our reactions in a variety of circumstances. Finally, I found the author's explanation of "catastophizing" and how to avoid it particularly helpful. This concept involves when we have an event occur, and we then start to develop stories in our minds of all of the horrible consequences that might happen as a result. We snowball the one event into dramatical, horrible consequences. Reivich explains how to avoid this from happening and regain control of our mental processes so that we may think clearly and find solutions. Very helpful and insightful book!

I was delighted when I discovered this jewel on Amazon. Now this book is is my kitchen, as a bible. I must admit that I am some sort of capsaicin addict and my oppinion is not objective.

Outstanding PHOTO/REFERENCE/GUIDE Book.......2005-06-26

I'll tell you what this great little book IS.....not what it isn't.

1.....This GUIDE BOOK rates each chili with a 1-10 temperature scale. Thank you, Mark Miller!!! Why didn't someone do this a long time ago? (In a neat, concise format, that is.) Did you know that bell peppers have a rating of zero? Poblanos rate a 3.....jalapenos a 5.5.....and those smokin' habaneros top the charts with a big fat 10!

2.....This PICTURE BOOK beautifully portrays every chili, both fresh and dried, with a bright, colorful, professional photo. I've taken this book grocery shopping to help identify the type of chile I'm buying because grocers don't always give us a name.

3.....This REFERENCE BOOK is an essential guide to identifying chilis...something every cook needs. At a glance the reader sees why Peruvian peppers aren't the best choice for filling with chorizo and rice. We must know what a habanero looks like (and why it doesn't belong in the tossed salad, or in the soup, or the casserole...or almost anything else). This book identifies all the choices that won't scald your tongue...and also those that might.

4.....This INFORMATIVE BOOK offers history, guidance, personal experience and opinion. Lay this on your coffee table to educate your friends and to inspire some "hot conversation." Everyone has a good pepper story to tell........"You think jalapenos are hot? Let me tell you about the time when..."

5.....As an ADDED BONUS...some great basic/authentic recipes are included. Mango-habanero sauce (So that's where those trouble-makers go!)..... guajillo salsa..... chipotles in adobe sauce..... mole amarillo..... spicy grilled shrimp and melon salad..... pipian rojo..... a total of seventeen wonderful recipes.

Mark Miller urges the cook to focus on the flavor and not the heat...ha ha ha. Well, he's probably not kidding, since he's worked with chiles for over 30 years. Maybe I can focus on the flavor of everything below a 7 on the heat scale, and there are many of those to choose from. Because of this book, I can now discuss the merits of poblanos versus those of anaheims, and I can identify any "capsicum" in the world if that need arises. I can definitely choose with confidence from the produce section. All in all, "The Great Chile Book" offers ACCESSIBLE and VALUABLE information that every cook needs to know.

Almost everything you wanted to know...........2004-07-04

Salsa anyone? THE GREAT SALSA BOOK by Mark Miller is all about salsa. If he wanted to be cute, he could have titled his book, "Everything you wanted to know..." and not have been far off the mark. Miller's book includes over one hundred pages of salsa recipes: Tomato and Tomatillo salsas; Chile salsas; Topical salsas (Tropical mango salsa and Mango mash); Fruit salsas (Apple Pasado Salsa, Moroccan Date Salsa; Corn and Bean salsas; Nut, seed and herb salsas; and plenty of other exotic salsas. So you see, salsa isn't just that stuff you get at the Taco bar.

As I am trying to eat more vegetables, I find the `Grilled Vegetable Salsa' with chiles, eggplants, shiake mushrooms, zucchini squash, and asparagus, most appealing. Or, if you want something sweet as well as colorful, try is the sweet potato and pecan salsa with maple syrup and cranberries. Miller includes color photos of all his prepared dishes. This is truly a great salsa book.

Plenty of recipes............2004-07-04

The GREAT CHILE BOOK by Mark Miller is not nearly as great as his SALSA BOOK. Miller includes many colorful photos of chiles, but this book is no encyclopedia. Furthermore, although I found the book interesting, I also found it difficult to use. He divides the text into `fresh chiles' and `dried chiles' followed by a few pages of recipes, but rather than see the same chile shown over and over on several different pages in it's green, red, fresh and dried stages, I would have preferred to have seen various peppers in the same family clustered together so that I could learn to distinguish among them. In his brief overview he explains the origins of the chile pepper -- that it is not in the family that produces the black peppercorn (piper nigrum) but rather all chiles are descended from a South American plant that was dispersed by birds and then cultivated and spread further by humans.

Miller's recipe section, which he describes as a good cross-section of various chile dishes, includes one for Jalepeno ketchup. Now that should wake up any hot dog!! Most interesting, however, is the recipe for Mole Roja, from the Oaxaca and Puebla area of Mexico known as the `Land of the Seven Moles.' Miller explains that some moles contain no chocolate (this one does, however, as well as dried plums or cherries to enhance the flavor of the ancho and mulatto chile peppers). Mole Roja is best served with fowl such as turkey. So, try this instead of cranberry sauce next Thanksgiving!

Essential kitchen equipment.......2001-03-01

The definitive guide to identifying chile peppers, this book is conveniently divided into sections on dried and fresh peppers. Beware - this is NOT a recipe book (although a few more recipes would be nice), nor does it contain more than brief instructions on preparing and using chile peppers. However, with bright colour photographs, taste descriptions, and a clear and accurate guide to hotness from bell pepper (0) to habanero (10), this book is essential kitchen equipment for those who like their cooking fiery.

Almost three decades after commencing his maritime epic with Master and Commander, Patrick O'Brian is still at it. The 20th episode, Blue at the Mizzen, is another swashbuckling adventure on the high seas, complete with romantic escapades from smoggy London to Sierra Leone, diplomacy, espionage, the intricacies of warfare, and imperial brinksmanship. As always, these events are bound up in the ongoing friendship between two officers of the Royal Navy. Jack Aubrey is the naval captain, bold yet compassionate, innovative yet cautious, as fearless in war as he is bumbling in affairs of the heart and household. His boon companion Stephen Maturin is the ship's surgeon--and additionally a spy for the British government, a wealthy Catalonian aristocrat, a doting Irish father, and an avid naturalist.

That may sound like a lot to keep track of. However, it's not necessary to carry around a scorecard or ship's roster while reading Blue at the Mizzen. The ostensible issue is whether Jack will finally be promoted to Admiral of the Blue. But long before he hears any word from the Napoleonic era's equivalent of Personnel, he loses half his crew to desertion, his ship undergoes a disastrous collision, and the entire company comes close to perishing in the ice-choked seas off Cape Horn. Meanwhile, the widowed Maturin issues a surprising proposal of marriage to a beautiful, mud-bespattered fellow naturalist while trekking through an African mangrove swamp. (The two lovebirds happen to be searching for a rare variant of Caprimulgus longipennis, the long-tailed nightjar, which they hope to surprise in full mating plumage.)

Still, this is hardly a plot-driven novel. O'Brian takes time to get anywhere, and invariably enjoys the journey more than the arrival. So even as we get constant hints of the climax to come--Jack's spectacular naval action on behalf of the infant Republic of Chile--we don't mind hearing about the nuances of shipboard existence or the secret life of the white-faced tree duck. We're treated, for example, to this snippet about managed care, circa 1816:

Poll, Maggie and a horse-leech from the starboard watch have been administering enemas to the many, many cases of gross surfeit that have now replaced the frostbites, torsions, and debility of the recent past, the very recent past. Strong, fresh, seal-meat has not its equal for upsetting the seaman's metabolism: he is much better kept on biscuits, Essex cheese, and a very little well-seethed salt pork--kept on short commons.

And we're grateful! We can only hope that the elderly author will favor us with at least one more novel, so that his avid followers can avoid their own form of short commons. Life without Aubrey and Maturin would be a deprivation indeed. --Andrew Himes

Asleep at the Watch.......2006-09-12

Immerse yourself once again in the seafaring adventures of Captain Jack Aubrey and his ship's surgeon Stephen Maturin as they roam the almost unexplored oceans of the early 17th century, and participate in the bittersweet "liberation" of Chile. The 85 year-old O'Brian's flawless dialogue and meticulous attention to detail makes this book -- like the rest of the series -- a historical tour de force. Unfortunately after 20 previous books, Aubrey and Maturin have few surprises left, and hundreds of pages filled with the impenetrable politics and minutia of daily naval life may be as stupefying as Dr. Maturin's regular doses of laudanum and hellebore for readers unaware that a great naval battle invariably lurks in the closing pages. O'Brian addicts will welcome another chance to visit their favorite characters, but people new to O'Brian should visit the earlier, fresher books of the series -- say "The Far Side Of The World."

Lucky Jack.......2006-07-25

Patrick O'Brians Royal Navy is alive and well in Blue At The Mizzen.I read it as a preface to his final partial novel. I have read all of the Jack Aubrey novels some twice and three times over the years and Blue At The Mizzen is one of the best.

A perfect final entry in the series.......2006-01-09

Having Jack Aubrey finally attain his long-desired goal, an admiral's commission with its blue flag, brought the series to a very satisfactory conclusion for me. I don't plan to read the unfinished, unedited Book 21, because I have deeply enjoyed the entire series of 20, and Book 21 seems gratuitous. If O'Brien had lived to finish it properly, I'd of course have bought Book 21. But "Blue at the Mizzen" as a conclusion is so satisfying that I'm happy with it--though I could wish for the series to have gone on forever.

But with "Blue at the Mizzen," I can close the books reluctantly for the second or third or fourth time..., and rest assured that in the universe of the imagination, Aubrey and Maturin forever sail the Napoleonic seas just beyond my view, while Killick fusses and Sophie frets. I shall even take the liberty of bringing Bonden back to life.

What a wonderful world of characters, high drama, action, and laughter O'Brien created, and what a fine ending "Blue at the Mizzen" is!

End of an Era.......2004-12-31

The final installment in O'Brian's smashing 20-volume nautical series has an unfinished feel. In the final pages we finally learn about Jack's career move --though the answer is given away by the book's title-- and this is something he has fretted over for several books now. But many other plot threads remain hanging, most notably that of Stephen's marital status. The previous book involved the sudden, unexpected and unmourned deaths of several key characters, and this one leaves a dozen or two other secondary characters wholly unfinished. It feels as though the elderly O'Brian had meant to write another book or two to bring Aubrey and Maturin back to England for the final denouement, but perhaps his energy failed him.

In any case, this is another excellent story. With Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo, the "Surprise" must refit after suffering damage in a collision before making her way on her long-delayed voyage to Chile. The action and intrigue in Portugal and Chile are wonderful. As always, Stephen Maturin's wry humor, brought out by the author's sublime prose, leaves the reader smiling. Another wonderful story, but it just doesn't feel like it was meant to be the last one.

Who knew that early 19th century Naval history could be so exciting?

Girls, don't be afraid to read these books--I was a little intimidated, and boy, was I ever WRONG. Those who have compared O'Brien to Jane Austen are right on target. He could have written about sailors, soldiers or salesmen---as long as they were named Aubrey and Maturin, you can bet the stories would have been pure gold. But take a lesson from a previous reviewer--READ THEM IN ORDER!! And, if you have trouble with the nautical terms, like I did, get a copy of Dean King's "A Sea of Words", which does an excellent job of explaining them.

Never have I been as chagrined as when I reached the final page of "Blue at the Mizzen". It was as perfect an ending as could have been, and although the fates of Aubrey and Maturin are now left to the imagination, thanks to O'Brien, we have a rich treasury with which to create their final outcomes.
