5 out of 5 stars A smorgasboard of the unexplained.......2006-08-17

This listing of a wide variety of weird phenomenon with an index of places is very helpful for the field occultist. If you are interested in odd happenings that may have happened in YOUR HOME TOWN, you may find something in here that interests you!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-01-24

This book provided me with many hours and hours of fun. It has an extensive list of strange events and weird creatures that have been seen (and allegedly seen.) It isn't filled with nonsense talk like "One day the world may come to an end if we don't turn to our space brothers who enjoy probing our butts."

It is a historical record of events (which may or may not have happened) and neatly categorized. It is definitely worth buying if you can afford it.

5 out of 5 stars Let me tell you.......2005-11-18

Let me tell you, I ordered about 5 books at once. I skimmed through each, and found this one the worse. Then I read all 5, this one last, and this was the best one! It was done with only recorded incidents involving the criteria, and every subject was amazing. I definately recommend this one, if you're into anything paranormal.

4 out of 5 stars An Encyclopedia of the Weird.......2005-03-14

The Bords have produced an encyclopedia, desk reference type of book which chronicles as many sightings and encounters as possible.

The book is divided up into varied creatures, lake monsters, etc., and is a vast storehouse of reports, though whether or not many of these can be verified I don't know.

Nearly every nation in the world has had strange events, and some of these are familiar, while others border on the comical.

A good reference for the fan of the mysterious, the paranormal or the wannabe cryptozoologist.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of interesting information.......2004-05-27

Loved the extensive amount of information from UFO's and other mysterious happenings....good read

        Book Description

Like puzzles and paradoxes and unmarked graves, unsolved crimes exert a powerful pull on the human mind. In this tightly written narrative, Richard Wilson looks into fifteen enigmatic cases of death and disappearance. Here are the three lighthouse keepers who vanished without a trace, the ex-RAF pilot who disappeared on a routine Christmas Eve flight, the woman whose dismembered forearm set off an intensive-and ultimately fruitless-search by the Aberdeen police. Must reading for anyone interested in true crime stories. The son of a Scottish police detective, Richard Wilson comes naturally by his interest in true crime. He is assistant editor of the

This book is laden with pictures to engross you as well as conflicting theory on subjects such as the "Philadelphia Experiment" and ufo sightings.A perfect companion book to Berlitzs' "World of Strange Phenomena",it leaves you wanting to hear more about these subjects. A Great research book to illustrate the fact that we cannot assume that this is our only alternate world and that we can't always believe everything we see or hear.

3 out of 5 stars Not great, but not horrible either........2007-07-30

The Age of Conan series so far have been ok, and this one follows along in that vein of okness. Story goes along well, writing style is ok. The character is kinda iffy, a little emo for the Hyborian age. And there were a few glaring typos/issues. Like the name of the king Conan usuped the throne from was consistantly misspelled, and the Bossonian Marches weren't an independant country within Aquilonia in the Howard stories. And some math was a little off, in regards to number of soliders. None of these are huge flaws, just things that a Conan fanatic might grumble about. But, even with the flaws, the story is a good read, Conan acts like Conan in his small parts in the book, and it's generally fun. I'll probably read the other two when I happen to pick them up.

          3 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-04-06

I'm a fan of the original REH Conan books, not the later authors. Because this book was about someone other than Conan, I thought I'd give it a try, and it turned out to be pretty good overall. The author even does Conan justice, in my opinion, in his brief appearances. (minor spoiler warning)

It does have a few things that may knock down your suspension of disbelief, however. For example, there is an award introduced called the "Lion Cross." It has no cross, not to mention the fact that the story takes place about 10,000 years before the crucifixion of anyone of note.
He is arranged to wed a beautiful, rich noblewoman, whom he ends up turning down because he basically "doesn't like" her.
And, despite the character being a noble aspiring to be a knight and member of the royal guards, his personality rings of 20th century pacifism and post honor culture.
He turns out to disdain any honors awarded him for his own actions, and virtually falls into a quivering lump of moral confusion about combat and killing, even if forced to kill murderous flesh eating savages and traitors who are trying to kill him and his men by horrible means; a very odd thing for one groomed to be a professional warrior in a medieval/classicalesque honor culture of violence.

On the upside, it is a good read, and I think it won't dissapoint most REH fans. The story doesn't involve any fabulous unnatural monsters or powerful sorcerors. There isn't even any magic involved (well, maybe some subtle things, easily explained away), lending a fairly realistic environment, as opposed to most Hyborean pastiche authors. The main character gradually gets whipped into proper shape through his soldiery experience throughout the book as well, and becomes less dissapointing towards the very end of the book.
          I recommend it personally.

          4 out of 5 stars Good story.......2007-02-24

I've read this book and the second in the series. I'm impressed. I bought them on a whim, and what a good whim it was.

I think this auther knows conan and his world. I've been waiting a long time for it to come out, and when i got it I never wanted to put it down. Every chapter kept me on the edge of my feet. Trust me if you are a true conan fan this is one for the money.

            5 out of 5 stars Fibromyalgia/CMP review...great book!!!!.......2007-08-17

I was just diagnosed w/fibromyalgia and had borrowed this book from a relative. I liked it so much, I purchased one for my own reference guide to help with the pain. My new doctor prescribed Lyrica to help as well. Although this book has been out awhile, it's still VERY informative and useful. It is written in a way that non-medical folks can easily understand it. Kudos to Mrs. Devin Starlanyl...your dedication to this book has been a real blessing in the lives of both myself and my aunt. THANKS FOR YOUR SACRIFICE OF WRITING THIS SECOND EDITION!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The best book on fibromyalgia.......2007-08-09

This is my 3rd copy as I have loaned it twice and not gotten it back. With the second edition there is even more great information that is so helpfuling living my life with this very difficult disease.

5 out of 5 stars Fibromyalgia and Chronic Myofascial Pain.......2007-07-16

Few books actually change a person's life or way of thinking. Fibromyalgia & Chronic Myofascial Pain actually did that for me. Like many people with FM and/or CMP, I went through a long, painful (both physically and emotionally painful) period of diagnosis and an even longer period of denial. I felt that since everyone else seemed to question my invisible symptoms that it was in my best interests to try to ignore what was really going on in my body and in my mind. So I suffered in silence and isolation with only my family knowing the diagnosis and no one really knowing the extent of my situation.

Reading Fibromyalgia & Chronic Myofascial Pain was like having a truly meaningful conversation with someone in the same situation as me. Someone who had not only accepted that these conditions actually exist but also had developed real life strategies to deal with everyday life and unexpected flare ups. For the first time since this roller coaster ride started, I felt empowered.

4 out of 5 stars Great, if you have fibro.......2007-06-15

If you only have CMP (chronic myofascial pain), and if that CMP is of relatively recent onset and you have the slightest clue as to what set it off, you probably don't need all the information in Starlanyl's book and would do better, presuming limited $$, with a good trigger point manual and a couple of tennis balls.

Starlanyl is full of useful information that can help people who have found their conditions overwhelming, as is evidenced by all the ravingly 5-star positive reviews. OTOH, if you have a pretty good grasp of pain management, and maybe dietary adjustments, and possibly even various forms of bodywork, you may find yourself turning pages pretty fast. Then again, it's not that expensive (about the same as a generic pain prescription).

I won't be returning it, but I'll be in Clair Davies' book (Trigger Point Therapy Workbook) a whole lot more and I coulda bought half a Theracane with the cost of Starlanyl.

                    Book Description

CHILI MADNESS, now with over 324,000 copies in print, collects more than 35 authentic recipes from all across the country for a fiesta of treasured concoctions that combine meat, chili, and spices in wondrous permutation, some-yes-using pork instead of beef, some-yes-adding tomatoes, some-yes-prepared with beans.

Recipes range from easy First Love Chili to Navajo Green, Reno Red, and the "six-Rolaid-rating" pride of Cincinnati, Murray's Girlfriend's Chili. They come from all over-championship recipes, restaurant recipes, great pots of things named for H. Allen Smith, Carroll Shelby, the city of Santa Clara. There is Chasen's Chili, Texas/Two Fingers Chili. Mike Roy's Housebroken Chili.

CHILI MADNESS also explains how to join chili clubs, receive chili newsletters, develop personal chili recipes, and enter them in competition. A full-alarm call to chili and everything to do with chili, the book includes tips on the best garnishes, the best go-togethers, and the best cool-down drinks.

Selection of the Book-of-the-Month and Quality Paperback book clubs, and Better Homes & Gardens Family Book Service.

5 out of 5 stars If you like chili.......2007-05-13

I bought two of these books for me and my brother. He had one before but lost it. I have tried several of the recipes along with the suggestion to use fresh or dried chile pods for the chili. Some of the best chili I ever had. Also got rave reviews from my family. If you and your family really like chili, I highly recommend this book.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Chili Classic.......2006-12-06

CHILI MADNESS, A PASSIONATE COOKBOOK BY JANE BUTEL, is as hot as a bowl of her chili. CHILI MADNESS contains more than 35 of the recipes for chili that she has collected. Each recipe has a little story about the source of the recipe. The book is red-hot reading.

Even more interesting than the recipes is "The Irresistible Passion" at the beginning of the book. This section contains:
                    · Origins of the Bowl of Blessedness, a fascinating historical account of the birth of chili
                    · Chili Makings, a primer with pictures of types of chiles, an explanation of preparation of chiles, and a discussion of other common chili ingredients
                    · Basic Training - Methods to Chili Madness, a basic chili cooking lesson
                    · Chili Cookoffs, essential information about the social skills of chili cooking contests
CHILI MADNESS is a classic that every American cook needs.

5 out of 5 stars Chili Madness, a Chili Book You Can't Go Wrong With.......2006-10-12

Chili Madness is one of ten chili books I refer to when I want to make chili differently than the two recipes I usually use. We have chili a lot in our house and both my Dad and my Mama have their favorite ways of cooking it. I grew up with their recipes and I have documented them in one of my "Amazon So You'd Like to Guides" and I hope you take a look at it. Both recipes are delicious, but when you've had them as often as I've had 'em, you sort of yearn for something a bit different. So, once a week, usually on Saturdays, I break out these ten books and search for a chili recipe I either haven't tried, or one I haven't made in a long time. Of course, like all cooks, I fudge a bit with the ingredients, but not all that much. I like to stick pretty close to the recipes, at least the first few times I make it, so I can get an idea of what the writer/recipe maker had intended.

And let me tell you, you'd be surprised at the subtleties there are in a chili recipe. As they say, no two chile recipes were created equal, but the recipes in Chili Madness have never let me down. I've got a lot of chili books, have tried a lot of recipes over the years, but the recipes here, like the recipes in my other nine fave books, have been consistently good. You can't go wrong with Chili Madness.

5 out of 5 stars One of my most-used cook books.......2001-02-26

This book came out in 1980 at the start of the Chili Craze. Contests were being held all over the US for best chili. Every weekend you could find a Chili Cook-off or Chili Tasting anywhere from hot-pepper-hating New England to 12-alarm-fire-chili-loving Texas. Even the Simpsons ended up doing a chili cook-off spoof (The Guatemalan Insanity Pepper episode is really great animation and very funny, too.)

I have made many of the chilis in the book, going so far as to buy the required chili pequenos, chili colorado and other special chilis in the recipes. Yes, they make a difference. And the book even has Cincinnati 5-Way Chili, which purists will scorn as "not REALLY chili" but which is addictive and great for guests who hate hot spices. (5-way chili is a slighty sweet, cinnamon spiced chili probably influenced by Middle-East immigrants in Cincinnati. It is served 2-way, 3-way or 5-way with onions, beans, cheese, and spaghetti. It's fun for kids, who can make up their own garnished dish.) The Texas Style hot chilis are really gorgeous. This is one of my all-time favorite books and I don't think in 20 years, anyone has really written a better book on chili than Jane Butel.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent chili reference book.......1999-10-01

In addition to the great recipes, this book gives you some history of chili along with some great black and white pictures.
