Book Description

It's been two years since an on-the-job shooting forced ex-Santa Fe chief of detectives Kevin Kerney to retire. He is drawn back into action when Terry Yazzi, his former partner and the man responsible for his wounds, pleads for Kerney's help. Yazzi's son, a soldier, has disappeared in the barren desert surrounding the White Sands Missile Range.

Kerney's investigation resurrects the long-forgotten thrill of the hunt -- and other emotions surface after meeting the tough-but-beautiful Capt. Sara Brannon, the Army's investigating officer. Together, they uncover a crime far greater than an AWOL soldier: a conspiracy of death that snakes from the secretive world of military operations, to the cutthroat alleys of a Mexican border town, leading them to a final, shocking revelation that may cost them both their lives....

4 out of 5 stars A well written New Mexico mystery.......2007-04-20

I found this book at my local libary. I was searching for a mystery book and was surprised to find one that was about places I knew. I haven't heard about the magnanimous author, Michael McGarrity before, but I am intrigued to read it anyway, because it sounds like a good mystery book.

The book Tularosa is about a missing, silent soldier from White Sands Missile Range. Kevin Kerney, a former cop from Santa Fe is searching for his godson Sammy Yazzi, the son of his former partner, Terry Yazzi. Sammy has been reported as AWOL from White Sands Missile Range. The credence to find Sammy falls on Kerney, together with Sara Brannon, the capricious, blond, armi investigator. They embark a cryptic story about stolen, golden artifacts, murdered people, and a corrupt, white, high ranking officer from White Sands Missile Range.

Today Michael McGarrity lives with his wife and his son in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Before he turned to writing full time, he worked also as a deputy sheriff for Santa Fe County. Maybe this was what inspired him 1996 to write Tularosa, which was well nominated for an Antohny Award, a Dilys Award and a Spur Award from the Western Writers of America. I really want to read more from him, because this first novel combined the characters of mystery, a story involing unknown persons and facts, with a description of the sometimes green desert landscape of New Mexico.

4 out of 5 stars The pace never lets up in this book.......2006-04-17

McGarrity's books move right along -- lots of action and not a lot of conversation or things not strictly associated with the plot. His books are set in the southwest and draw on his experience in law enforcement. Kevin Kerney, his hero/detective, is the kind of character who would be played by a younger Clint Eastwood or Harrison Ford -- tough, honorable, capable, and a bit of a loner although well-liked. Think Lone Ranger, riding in to defeat the forces of evil and then riding off again leaving behind grateful people.

At the beginning of the book Kerney is living alone on a New Mexico ranch. He was seriously injured fighting badguys and is no longer in law enforcement but kind of retired, doing caretaking for an absentee landlord on a ranch. A truck arrives carrying a Navajo police officer, a former partner whom Kerney has a grudge against on account of the injuries, but the ex-partner hopes that he will take a paid assignment to track down his son Sammi, who has apparently gone AWOL from the army -- or at least he's missing, because no-one who knows Sammi believes he would desert. Kerney cares about Sammi so agrees to go looking for him. Sammi had been assigned to the White Sands Missile Testing Center (or whatever the base is called) and that's the land that Kerney was raised on -- he knows it well. So with the initially reluctant help of Sara, an army intelligence officer, he starts asking questions and trying to uncover what has happened to Sammi.

This is high adventure and quick paced. This isn't the first book in the series I've read, and it won't be the last. I think guys will particularly like the book, although as a woman I also enjoyed it. Some violence, but nothing too graphic, and a little sex but not too explicit, for those concerned about such things.

4 out of 5 stars Another Mystery (yawn?) Not So Fast.......2005-07-09

Michael McGarrity's TULAROSA begins predictably. An on-the-job shooting has forced Kevin Kearney to retire from police work. Now the officer that caused Kearney's injury, Terry Yazzie, appears and asks Kearney to find Sammy, Terry's son. Sammy has gone AWOL from White Sands Misstle Range in New Mexico. Though Kearney despises Yazzie, he takes the job. Yazzie offers him money, Kearney has respect for Terry's ex-wife, and Kearney is Sammy's God-father.
Kearney begins the hunt. The clues come. Then, suddenly, expected outcomes turn upside down. The reader discovers that McGarrity has cleverly set up enticing false leads to mask the the tale's true development. What is going on? Who's the bad guy/ Who's the good guy? What does which clue have to do with which part of the plot? The real fun of the book begins as the reader struggles to put together all that the author has presented in his tight, precise, action packed prose.
TULAROSA is a great weekend read.

5 out of 5 stars Desert suspense makes for fine debut.......2004-07-23

In McGarrity's first novel ex-Santa Fe cop Kevin Kerney, derailed by a shot-up knee, takes a break from retirement when Navajo cop Terry Yazzi, his former partner and the man responsible for his injury, asks him to find his son.

The younger Yazzi, Sammy, is listed as AWOL from the high-security White Sands Missile Range. But Sammy is conscientious and was content with his work ? not a likely candidate for running off.

Kerney's investigation leads him first to army investigator Sara Brannon, a sharp-eyed woman who doesn't miss a trick. After a rocky start, the two join forces on a trek which takes them into the regions' past ? from the recent days of struggle between ranchers like Kerney's family and the military who dispossessed them to more distant days of armies and Indians.

McGarrity's characters emerge as real people and the desert landscape is as beguiling as it is harsh while the tangled conspiracy unravels with nail biting, page turning excitement. A fine debut.

3 out of 5 stars I really wanted to love this book...........2004-07-05

Through out this book, I couldn't decide whether I liked it or not. There is good action and the description of the southwest was good. I just couldn't figure out where it was headed. There were too many characters to keep track of. And in some parts, you weren't sure where Kerney was or what he was doing.
I'm not giving up on this though, I'm going to read more. I'm sure he gets better.

Book Description

Tularosa—sun-scorched, sandblasted, merciless—the parched desert where everything, from cactus to cowman, carries a weapon of some sort, and the only creatures who sleep with both eyes closed are dead. Tularosa—the last frontier in the continental United States. C. L. Sonnichsen, an authority on the Southwest, writing from primary records and conversations with survivors of Tularosa's pioneer days, tells the stories of the great cattle ranchers pitted against daring rustlers, elite men against Apaches, desperados against law men. Here are Oliver Lee, Pat Garrett, and Bill McNew. And here is the feud between Col. A. J. Fountain and Albert Fall. Sonnichsen has updated his history for this new edition with a revised final chapter bringing the drama of Tularosa and the New Mexican frontier West into the Atomic Age.

The history of the Tularosa Basin--which includes White Sands Missile Range--from pioneer days through the atomic age.

Great read if you are interested in South Central New Mexico or have lived in Tularosa Basin! Many of the landmark names are named after people and this book demonstrates the significance of those people. Super choice for the history buff!

This is a magnificent work. I was born and raised in the Tularosa Basin and I feel Sonnichsen does a remarkable job capturing the very essence of this enchanted region. I hightly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the Southwest, especially those who have lived in the Basin. -Steve Gazzoli

    West of the Tularosas

Pelona was a strange town, and Ward McQueen was a stranger to it. The stalawart foreman of the Tumbling K had come to the high country to take possession of the Firebox range. But the sight that greeted him when he arrived was an ugly one: the battle-scarred cabin and bullet-ridden body of its former owner. It was clear that young Jimmy McCracken had gone out fighting: his killers left behind a trail of blood. In 30 years, Howard Waldrop will have the same authority as a speculative fiction writer that Philip K. Dick has now.

His stories are so insanely off the wall that no one else could have possibly even thought them up and so brilliant that only a master could have pulled them off. He manages to take familiar tropes and items that we know and put them in an entirely new context without the slightest hint of pastiche.

The title story is War of the Worlds set in Texas.

Why is Waldrop so ignored? His short stories are brilliant, but difficult to classify-- he heads off into a completely new direction every time. There isn't a genre he won't twist to his own ends, frequently with large dollops of genuinely witty humor thrown in. The miracle is that he succeeds each time with even the most improbable concepts and premises. So track this down along with his other collections (Strange Monsters of the Recent Past, Howard Who?, anything else you can get your hands on) and enjoy. You'll become a fan, I guarantee it.

5 out of 5 stars Why is this out of print?.......2000-08-22

I'm completely mystified why Howard Waldrop's books are out of print - they should be required reading for everyone! Although it's easy to assume this guy is seriously crazy, he possesses the most imaginative mind I've ever come across. His stories often take a historical event, and give it such a neat little twist, you end up wishing it had happened that way. Whatever the subject, you just find yourself thinking, "Hey! What if ....." and surely that can only broaden your mind. Isn't that what the art of short story writing is all about? To get us thinking?

Although I'm responding to this excellent collection (which I've owned for many years), my favourite of his short story collections, "Strange Things in Close Up" is not even listed here! Among 19 wonderful stories, it contains "The Ugly Chickens" which has to be one of the best short stories ever written (most of the rest of my personal top ten short stories are also by him). You'll really believe dodos were alive (in America, no less) into this century - after all, Paul Linberl saw the photo. This story also made me find out what on earth Pachelbel's "Canon in D" was and was instrumental in changing my taste in music forever!

From far-off Australia, I urge all Americans to rise up and demand Howard Waldrops books are reissued so they can rush to log on to Amazon and buy them! This guy should be revered as one of your greatest authors, not languishing among the "Out of Print"!

                  5 out of 5 stars This S.O.B. can WRITE!!!!.......1997-08-19

No matter what crazy or malign thingsHoward Waldrop may have done inhis life, these stories or his will pay for his entrance into Heaven! This is a short story collection which takes "What if..." ideas and twists them around until the reader says, "What the HELL?!?!" Waldrop's fiction is a smorgasboard of delightful details. It activates circuits in your brain you didn't realize you had. Waldrop's characters are so deftly rendered that you can SEE them in your imagination - the man would have made a great casting director. He knows old movies better than Connie Willis (who took an entire book to do something Waldrop did in a handful of pages). He knows comics and H.G. Wells and music and ... heck, if I ever meet the guy, the beers are on me. This sonuvagun can WRITE!!!

                  5 out of 5 stars WHAT A RIDE!.......1996-12-18

Two or three years ago I test-drove the latest Waldrop offering, a hot little number the manufacturer decided to call HOWARD WHO? for most obvious reasons: Waldrop writes some of the best sci-fi or imaginitive fiction I've seen today---award-winning---yet this superb author remains a relative unknown. Now if you're looking for great refinement in a 0-to-60 short-story, you'd best look elsewhere, but if you're looking for a vehicle that will A) knock you back in your seat with the sheer g-force of imaginitive acceleration; and B) make you wonder how or where a top-notch writing-engineer like Waldrop receives his divinely insane ideas, this is your ticket to unmitigated bliss.Waldrop is a mad-man, but one we can all understand, and he seeks to hurl each of us about the tight curves of his mind on the responsive yet friendly suspension of this latest collection, each short complete with a personal annotation from The Maestro himself. You want alternate history, this book's got it. You want pure fantasy, this book's got it. You want the plain old daily drive of weird, this book's got it. This has to be the best working-person's imaginitive drive for the money. I'd even be willing to pit it in a no-holds-barred road-race against any other collection of imaginitive fiction still in production. Collectors will want to order one copy to drive, and a second copy to garage, something to show the grandkids.

After experiencing a paralyzing stroke in 1995 and facing her own mortality, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross (author of the renowned On Death and Dying) realized she had some unfinished business to take care of. "I wanted to write one more book, not on death and dying, but on life and living," she explains. So she joined forces with coauthor David Kessler, a leader in the field of hospice care, and together they wrote about the lessons we can learn about living from those who are dying. As Kessler explains in his introduction, "The dying have always been teachers of great lessons, for it's when we are pushed to the edge of life that we see most clearly."

In days gone by, the community would have gathering places where children and adults listened to elders tell their stories of life's challenges and the meaning they found in life. In lieu of that kind of extended community, the authors offer this book, filled with stories from the edge. Then, like fireside elders, they weave these personal stories into themes, such as living authentically, the importance of play, finding one's power, loving relationships, and self-compassion. One cannot say enough about the lasting value of this beautifully written and carefully rendered book. This is your chance to see life from the 20/20 vision of hindsight. In the end what will we value most? Here are some hints: the days we surrendered and became calm, the times we healed that which was broken, and of course all the moments we opened ourselves to love. --Gail Hudson

                          Book Description

Is this really how I want to live my life?

Each one of us at some point asks this question. The tragedy is not that life is short but that we often see only in hindsight what really matters.

In this, her first book on life and living, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross joins with David Kessler to guide us through the practical and spiritual lessons we need to learn so that we can live life to its fullest in every moment. Many years of working with the dying have shown the authors that certain lessons come up over and over again. Some of these lessons are enormously difficult to master, but even the attempts to understand them can be deeply rewarding. Here, in fourteen accessible chapters, from the Lesson of Love to the Lesson of Happiness, the authors reveal the truth about our fears, our hopes, our relationships, and, above all, about the grandness of who we really are.

The quote from the book that stuck with me was from Ronnie Kaye author of Spinning Straw Into Gold. "In life when one door closes another door always opens, but the hallways are a bitch."

I read this book three years ago after my sister passed from cancer and really learned a lot from it. If you have had someone close to you die or know someone that has had the unpleasant experience of having to battle for their life every day, this book may be of some help to you in learning "how" to interact with them. Learning to cope with a disease is never easy for the patient or the family and friends. This book is a good attempt to help each of us do just that.

I recently picked the book up again after experiencing a missed opportunity that cost me five months salary. This book brought closure to the experience. The wisdom from this book has reinforced my decision not to seek a legal remedy through the court system as a solution to my difference of opinion with my former employer. It made me realize that in life, the reality is that some relationships just don't work out. It has saved me time, money and energy that otherwise may have been wasted. After finishing the book a second time, I walk away feeling like I have been given a gift. I have been given a second opportunity to change my life and move on.

4 out of 5 stars A good read to refer to now and again for reminding you what's important in life.......2007-05-09

This book has a lot of good advice and insight to it. There are some referecences here and there to god and whatnot, and I'm not a religious person at all, but this book is not what some people may think because the ideas still apply regardless of your POV of spirituality; it's about lessons in life and isn't telling people to follow this or that or morals of any certain religion (the authors don't try to press that onto the reader). So, if you are anti-religious...and you start reading, notice such mentionings, plus you're turned off by such things, I advise you still don't pass over this book (it's not as if every-other word is "god" or something like that anyway). I would recommend this read to anyone. I really enjoyed it and it helped to remind me what parts in life are trivial compared to what's really important.

                          Book Description

For thousands of years, Romania, the easternmost outpost of the Roman Empire, was traversed by a number of tribes in search of riches or land to claim. In much the same way that these people's language became absorbed, they left behind many traces of their own ways of preparing food for a lasting influence on Romanian cooking. This cookbook provides a solid introduction to a fascinating cuisine that blends Turkish, Hungarian, Greek, Slavic, and French influences into a cooking style that is at once earthy, complex, and satisfying, but is also easy to prepare. The Art of Romanian Cooking features recipes for appetizers for a wonderful light meal, such as papanasi prajiti (savory fried cheese patties) or croquette din salam (salami croquettes). There is a tremendous array of soups, ranging from a mouth-watering creamy potato soup to the six variations of borscht. Fish lovers will enjoy such delights as Russian-style trout, and the meat recipes include chicken (try fried chicken with garlic sauce), duck, veal, and the ubiquitous beef. And don't forget dessert! The Othello torte is not to be missed, and the fragrance of rose jam alone makes it worth preparing. Altogether, the over 200 recipes in this book represent traditional and family recipes for home and special-occasion dining collected by Romanian native Galia Sperber, with reflections on her family and her native land.

Personally I am a romanian and as you see from my reviews I only review what I am passionate about or different items regarding Romania. This item in particular is a good thing to buy if you are interested in learning more about Romanian cooking. Romania has several unique meals as well as different ways of cooking some common day things than the US. Any of you ever hear of pork gelatin/pork jello? Well, it's not what you think but actually a mix of pork, gelatin and other spices served during the holidays in Romania and quite tastefull. You might also be surprised about some Romanian appetizers and how good or different they taste. This book is also very good for those of you who have gone out to Romania tasted and liked the cooking but had a hard time getting original recipes for some of the things you tasted. Who better to show you this than someone who had actually lived there as this author.
Many people I have met personally were very pleasantly surprised at some of the tastes of Romanian food and its appearance while some have it at some special ocassion as.. well something different. If you ever wanted to try Romanian deviled eggs, the Romanian meatballs "mici" or other types of foods then buy this book. Hope you enjoy and I wish you a taste of Romania in every bite.

Romania is usually included in general cookbooks about the Baltic nations, so it's refreshing to see it earn its own acclaim in The Art Of Romanian Cooking, a specialty cookbook which covers everything from appetizers such as Fried Cheese Papanasi to Tongue with Olives. The historical commentary accompanying many of the dishes is also fascinating and inviting.

As an avid cook, I highly recommend this book, full of origical recipes based on Romania's history and traditions. There is a huge selection of recipes to choose from: meat, fish, soups. And the best things are in the desserts chapters. I especially liked the walnut budinca. And the ingredients are easy to find anywhere and the recipes easy to follow. The authors little stories are also very interesting.

This is a fantastic book. So many of the recipes I remember from my mother's and grandmother's cooking. It's also nice to get a little bit of a history lesson, along with Romanian poems and folktales. I purchased it for my daughter and sons. Since I left Romania at 15 (over 18 years ago), it's nice to remember some of the Romanian cooking I grew up with.
Now, if I could only get my American husband to try some of the recipes, that would be a victory indeed. :o)

I was so happy to find the book on amazon and I recommend it to anyone who wants to explore Romanian culture.

This book is an all-around great cookbook. To be honest, I had never heard of Romanian cuisine before and picked up the book on a whim. I'm glad I did because the book introduced me to a delicious culture that I had never sampled before. The recipes in the book are grouped into the following chapters: appetizers, salads, egg dishes, soups, polenta, fish dishes, meat dishes, poultry dishes, vegetable dishes, dumplings, sauces, desserts, wines, preserves, and Jewish dishes. I found good recipes in each chapter, some fancy, and some that can be whipped up in minutes. Interspersed throughout the book are short history lessons about Romania, fairy tales, and poetry, as well as Klepper's comments explaining the cooking culture. The book also includes a bibliography, a place and personal name index, and English recipe index, a Romanian recipe index, a brief pronunciation guide, an English-Romanian-French food dictionary, and even an American-British food dictionary (surprisingly useful!). If you're looking for a Romanian cookbook, this is a great one. And if you're just looking for some interesting and tasty new recipes, you'll find some here.

4 out of 5 stars Some fundamentals are still missing..........2001-09-05

Somehow, everyone in Romania seems to believe that their heaviest food is also the tastiest. In Romanian restaurants both in Romania and accross the US, in cookbooks -- all I'm finding are the stuffed grape or cabbage leaves, the pork products, the mamaliga. What happened to all those seasonal (in Romania) meals centered around the great vegetables that abound in Spring, stuff that a family would actually eat everyday at home? The light and flavorful zuchinni with yoghurt, the spinach puree, all the many ways to prepare mushrooms, celery roots, even the lowly potatoe? The great sour soups that wake one up with their taste? What about some of the staples, like bors (not to be confused with Russiona borscht), the sour grain vinegar that is so good in those soups? Or all the pickled vegetables that spice up ones winter meal? Also, there are all the holiday preparations, such as a stuffed goose, duck on sourkraut, and, for the kids, the "sweet bites", sort of like a gingerbread cracker, but thicker and with a soft, molasse-like consistency (turta dulce for those of you out there who know :-)...
I'm not a great Romanian cook myself and I bought this book hoping to fill in some of my childhood favorites. It does do a good job of the recipes it presents. I handed the stuffed grape leaves recipe to the chef in charge at my wedding and it ended up being a favorite with my (mostly non-Romanian) guests!
The other complain I have is that some of the ingredients have been "adapted" to suit most American supermarkets. I won't complain about getting some of the fat out (although most of it stayed...) but what about the tarragon, the lovage, dill --they're all available here, with a bit of effort. Why not do what many asian cookbooks do and require the original ingredient, with an easy-to-find alternative where in doubt? And what about those simple salads that "parsley-up" and liven up any Romanian family's dinner?
Maybe it depends on the region -- Transylvania does have its share of heavier food, and with no outlets to the Black Sea, people there don't really enjoy eating fish. But Romanian cuisine has so many other flavors that I constantly see neglected, yet they are the easiest to include in a balanced diet...
And a final word of praise: the romanian wine list at the end is worth the price of the book -- and brings the stars rating to 4. I've been looking for something similar for a while, and I was really glad to find it in this book.

                          5 out of 5 stars New Wife.......2001-06-08

I just married a Romanian while he was on tour in the U.S. for six months. Having only been here for a year he was terribly homesick. After ordering the book I was able to surprise him with a full Romanian meal, and it was so easy! Highly, highly recommended!
