1 out of 5 stars Horrid book.......2004-10-17

Having read some of his previous books featuring Dortmunder, I was disappointed with these stories which were not really well-Written. Some of the stories were pretty pointless. In all, this collection took me 1 1/2 hrs to read (and is not worth the money) I would suggest skipping this collection and instead read something better such as Money for Nothing which was excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Reprints of Dortmunder and His Doppelganger.......2004-09-01

Unless you have read every issue of Playboy, chances are that you haven't seen all of these stories before. Several were first published there. One story, Give Till It Hurts, was first published as a free pamphlet at The Mysterious Bookshop. Jumble Sale first appeared in The Armchair Detective. The Dortmunder Workout appeared in the health section of The New York Times Magazine. The one story you are sure to find novel and intriguing is Fugue for Felons in which Mr. Westlake plays with the idea of changing the names of all of his characters. So you will meet John Rumsey instead of John Dortmunder. Interestingly, the characters changed too . . . even though they are clearly doppelgangers of the originals.

Mr. Westlake has written a fine introduction to the volume and to Fugue for Felons to explain the genesis of the stories and their publishing histories. I enjoyed finding out what triggered the desire to write each story. If you are like me, you'll gain new perspective on the stories from those comments.

Somewhere in at least one of the stories, you will find a cherished element of the Dortmunder novels. I was assuming just the opposite . . . that there would be short stories that would omit some of the hilarious elements of the novels. I was wrong. I particularly enjoy the repartee at the bar in the O.J. Bar & Grill and was pleasantly surprised to see that The Dortmunder Workout is solely based on such a scene. I also look forward to his unpleasant meetings with Arnie Albright, and was delighted to find that Arnie plays big roles in two of the stories (Jumble Sale and Now What?).

Some of the stories involve Dortmunder being involuntarily pressed into duty (Ask a Silly Question, Too Many Crooks, and Party Animal). Several stories feature the usual Dortmunder bad timing that leads to hilarious consequences (Too Many Crooks, A Midsummer Daydream, Now What? and Fugue for Felons). Some are intellectual treats as the crooks find themselves faced with invisible threats (Jumble Sale and Art and Craft). A few of the stories feature lovely ironies (Ask a Silly Question, Horse Laugh, Too Many Crooks, A Midsummer Daydream, Party Animal, Give Till It Hurts, Now What? and Fugue for Felons).

The only story that I thought was below par was Horse Laugh.

Too Many Crooks, A Midsummer Daydream, Party Animal, Give Till It Hurts, and Now What? are as fine as any crime short stories you are every likely to read.

You will notice that I haven't described the plots of any of these stories. To do so would be to risk spoiling your pleasure. Avoid reviews that do describe these plots.

5 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Collection for Westlake and Dortmunder Fans.......2004-05-17

April 2004 was apparently designated, by those who do the designating of such things, as John Dortmunder Month. The reason for this surmise on my part is the publication of not only a wonderful new Dortmunder tale, THE ROAD TO RUIN, but also a collection of short Dortmunder stories titled THIEVES' DOZEN. We are, accordingly, doubly blessed.

Dortmunder, who is incredibly smart and proportionately unlucky, is the creation of Donald E. Westlake. It is interesting to note that the hilarious misfortune that plagues Dortmunder in his novels seems to be absent in any number of the stories in THIEVES' DOZEN. The hilarity, however, remains. There is at least one good belly laugh in each of these stories, and at least one wonderful turn of phrase per page. Practically any one of these stories, standing alone, is worth buying the entire book, so that with eleven of them --- a thieves' dozen, if you will --- the price of admission is a bargain.

Even the most loyal of Westlake's followers will not have all of the stories collected in THIEVES' DOZEN --- a good number of them previously appeared in Playboy. There is also a very short story --- "The Dortmunder Workout" --- that appeared in the New York Times Magazine and a wonderful tale entitled "Give Till It Hurts" that was published as a very limited edition pamphlet by the absolutely indispensable institution known as The Mysterious Bookshop. And "Jumble Sale" has appeared only in The Armchair Detective, a wonderful magazine of, alas, limited distribution. THIEVES' DOZEN also includes a Dortmunder tale that is not a Dortmunder tale. "Fugue for Felons" has never seen the light of day before now; the story behind it is somewhat complicated, and Westlake can, and does, tell the tale behind it much better than I ever could. While Dortmunder is not in "Fugue For Felons," he is certainly present, and its inclusion here is undoubtedly appropriate.

But enough of the story behind the stories. Let's get to the heart of the matter. In THIEVES' DOZEN Dortmunder tries his hand at stealing art in "Ask A Silly Question" when he is retained to steal a phony piece of sculpture and finds himself in the middle of an acrimonious domestic matter. "Hose Laugh" is a bit of a fish out of water story. Dortmunder, the quintessential city boy, finds himself in rural New York stealing a horse. There are several good laughs in this one --- you don't want to be drinking coffee while you read it --- even as you know that this is one caper who must be, by its very nature, doomed from the start.

"A Midsummer Daydream" also has a rural setting and is perhaps my personal favorite in THIEVES' DOZEN. Dortmunder and his associate Kelp are once again in upstate New York, forced to take an involuntary vacation from New York City until things cool down a bit. They find, while staying with Kelp's cousin, that there has been a robbery and that Dortmunder is the only suspect. The problem is that Dortmunder is innocent for once and is forced to play detective. The results are hilarious and, as one might expect, he is quite good at it. After all, who would be better at understanding the criminal mind?

As with any good collection of this sort, however, my favorite story keeps changing. It might be "A Midsummer Daydream" one minute, "Horse Laugh" the next, or "Fugue For Felons," with a train wreck that you can see coming but still wonder how Westlake is going to do it, with results that are at once spellbinding and mirthful. And let's not forget "Give Till It Hurts," wherein Dortmunder blunders, however briefly and brilliantly, into our world.

THIEVES' DOZEN is indispensable if you are a fan of Westlake, and Dortmunder. If you have acquaintances who are among the unenlightened, THIEVES' DOZEN is an inexpensive but addictive introduction to all things Dortmunder. Don't lend someone your copy, though. You'll never get it back. Dortmunder's sticky-fingered proclivity is contagious.

    2 out of 5 stars "You Mean We're at Least 50th Cousins?".......2005-06-29

Lois Horowitz wrote a delightful, little book that had me both chuckling, and duly impressed, with the amazing connections between people. She motivated me to want to try this myself: tracking down my own collection of relatives, and leaving my children with a more developed sense of family - their family, our family.
Her personal trials, errors, and successes, in the quest of family history, helped me believe I also could try my hand at this, and maybe it really is a do-able venture. Lois shows it can be as time-consuming and elaborate as I wish to make it. But, happily, it also can be as simple, direct, and informative as reality allows. It's all up to me.
I look forward to providing my children, and other family members, with the information that gets discovered, and hope that they all will be blessed by the outcome. I'll let you know how it goes, after all, we're family; we're at least 50th cousins - maybe closer!

5 out of 5 stars Very well written and very informative.......2002-07-23

The author begins by noting her skepticism when she first read of the claimed kinship between Princess Diana and some twenty or thirty million Americans, via common ancestors. And, since heavy inbreeding usually causes aristocrats to have fewer individual ancestors than we commoners, perhaps the author had even more theoretical kin than that. From this preliminary hook, she leads the reader to consider the nature of family ties, the doubling effect, pedigree collapse, "sibling exchange" marriage, the side effects of inbreding and outbreeding, the nature of race, why so many great artists and musicians died without progeny, the practical limits to pushing your lineage into the past, interpreting the accuracy of family stories, family research in the Electronic Age, and -- squeezed into the final chapter -- a research check-list. And scattered throughout are scores of fascinating quotations and tidbits about the subject at hand, from such experts as Milton Rubincam and Eugene Stratton to Mark Twain and Kirk Douglas. This is not a methodological treatise or a how-to manual but a well-written presentation of the sort of information we probably all know but should periodically think about again.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for beginning genealogists.......2000-05-01

What Lois Horowitz does in this book is explain the kinds of complex relationships with one's ancestors and relatives. She explains what exactly a "3rd cousin, thrice removed" is, how many ancestors one can have, and what inbreeding can do to your family tree. Along with her simple explanations, she uses easy-to-understand charts. She also gives tips on interviewing relatives and what (not) to believe in public records. Lois briefly describes what to expect at genealogical "paradises" such as the National Archives or the Latter-Day Saints' Family History Centers. Although they're very interesting, the trivia on the margins of the pages are rather distracting All in all, I'd say that this book is decent in providing tips and background info to beginners.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting as well as helpful when doing relationships.......1999-11-03

Ms. Horowitz did a good job explaining how one generation is related to another within a family tree. The information helps the reader understand direct (and not so direct) realtionships within families. You begin to see how we are all related the more we go back in time and history. You can see why we all make up the "family of man".

3 out of 5 stars A valuable addition to the genealogy literature........1999-10-04

Lois Horowitz has written an entertaining and highly informative tome showing how nearly all of us are distantly related to one another. In my experience as both a genealogist and as a reference librarian, most family history researchers understandably limit their searches to one or two ancestral lines, usually those bearing their own parents' surnames. But if they were to embark on an exhaustive search for all of their ancestors, they'd probably need an additional lifetime. Mathematically, in each generation the number of unrelated direct ancestors doubles. Each of us has two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents, etc. If we follow this geometric progression far enough back, we'll eventually have more ancestors than the world had people! Horowitz shows how the actual number of ancestors is considerably smaller, yet remains a significantly large number, because of the presence of related ancestors (e.g., cousins, multiple marriages, in-law marriages). In addition, she provides an excellent introduction to family history research, including the use of electronic sources.

Perhaps that is a universal axiom that all of us should not ignore. For example, I never think to consider exploring within the fantasy/thriller genre. I don't know why this is. I read other things; so many books, so little time, I guess.

After reading Apocalypse Door, I feel somewhat foolish, as though I've wasted time being so narrow in my previous reading choices. All I can say is, it was a fun ride, full of twists and turns and dotted with intriguing references that immediately made me desire to dig further.

Right off the bat, the premise of a Priest/Knight Templar/Covert Agent knocked me off axis. Throw in a Nun/Hit Person and I felt as though I'd been cast off into unknown territory without familiar signposts to guide me home. Although a working knowledge of the Book of Revelation gave me at least a leg up. From the first page I admit I felt a certain discomfort and yet I couldn't stop reading it. Consumed almost entirely in one lazy Sunday afternoon, I was forced, by circumstances, to stop just short of the last chapter. A week later, freed to resume, I finished up with absolutely no clue how the author would clean up the mess and satisfy my need for a clean wrap. By the last page I was not only no longer uncomfortable but I was compelled to do some research about the references to the Knights Templar so cleverly used by the author to weave his intricate story.

I have a good track record for visualizing certain works of fiction as screenplays. I've done it before, casually thinking to myself, "I'll see this one on the big screen one day."
This is one of those works. I've already cast the characters. I see Pierce Brosnan possibly Bruce Willis as the protag Peter Crossman and possibly Angelina Jolie as Sister Mary Magdalene.

Read it for yourself and tell me I'm wrong.

    4 out of 5 stars Good thing I persisted.......2003-05-15

After reading the first dozen pages, I was rather disappointed. I kept telling myself, "Oh, well, at least I bought it used," but even so I was tempted to bawl out the reviewer from "Analog", I think, who'd gushed about the book. And then it clicked. And after that I was almost wholly happy. The gags, the one-liners, the action scenes - they all work nicely, even if the mushroom men make strangely low-powered enemies (I mean, falling apart because of shotgun recoil? Hardly brilliant...).
All in all, a nice fast read with a good premise and decent writing. Hopefully, if there are sequels, they would improve on this.

    5 out of 5 stars Superlative Adventure.......2003-05-03

When I first saw this book on the shelves and saw that the hero was a monk, and he was teamed with a pretty nun, I put it back. It's become such a cliche in the last thirty years to throw together people who have a religious calling, have them lose faith (and their brains) before the unsurmountable power of sex.

Several friends told me I was dead wrong about this one--that the characters, and the story, are impossible to predict. I am so glad I listened!

This is a very well written story, the heroes are intelligent, funny, complex (Peter Crossman is especially complex, as you find out through the snips of his backstory)--and their religion is real. In these days when bashing Christianity scores easy PC points, this book was particularly refreshing, especially as there was no hint of moralizing or preaching. Yet the deep, very deep, moral underpinnings are there, glimmering hints of the numinous amid the splendid adventure.

If you like action, CIA skulduggery, aliens, supernatural lightning strikes into the mundane world of spies and thugs and heroes and heroines, told with style and humor--there were times I laughed out loud--then try this book.

I hope Mr. Macdonald intends to write more. The ending seemed open enough for Peter Crossman and Maggie, the nun with a gun, to strike once again against evil!

3 out of 5 stars Innovative but confusing.......2003-03-17

Peter Crossman is one of the thirty and three holy knights for the Knights Templar, and he and his apprentice/partner, Simon, are trying to track down a missing U.N. team in a Newark warehouse. Instead of men, he finds mushrooms, and not just ordinary mushrooms. These little fungi flinch at his cross. Then a nun from Peter's past shows up behind his table in a bar, confessing she has come to kill him. Because he's a priest, he must accept her confession and he can tell no one afterward -- not even when he finds his contact dead outside, his face sliced off. And if that isn't enough trouble, soon he's got the CIA, some Teutonic Knights, more mushrooms, and a talking brass head to contend with. Even a holy knight might have some trouble with all that.

Although THE APOCALYPSE DOOR is supposed to be a fast paced thriller/fantasy combo, I found it only a skimpily plotted thriller/fantasy confusion. The chapters alternate between Peter Crossman in his present day role as a Knight and Peter Crossman back when he was Michael on a mission for the CIA. While the story from the past (set in a jungle with Michael looking for a missing man, only to be captured himself and tortured) moves along quickly and grabbed my interest, the present day action often lost me with twists and turns too poorly explained, characters with motivations I could not understand, and an immature writing style littered with cliches. The religious aspect is interesting (even to someone who knows little about Catholicism), but at times Peter's faith seemed more like something he used than actually believed. And as for the satire -- I am sure the author's intention was to poke fun of the CIA and kin, but he did so in a fashion I totally missed.

While THE APOCALYPSE DOOR is refreshingly different -- I can't help but want to like a book that throws the CIA and holy knights into the same mix -- it unfortunately doesn't deliver what it promises. Fantasy/thriller, yes. An intriguing story, no.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but illogical.......2003-01-01

Knight Templar Peter Crossman's task should be easy. Infiltrate a New Jersey warehouse, discover if missing U.N. peacekeepers are being held there, and report back to the Temple. Instead of peacekeepers, though, Crossman finds mushrooms that recoil from the cross, a beautiful assassin/nun, and hints that the end of time is at hand.

Author James D. Macdonald keeps the action moving, as Crossman and his sidekicks try to stay ahead of the CIA, the Teutonic Knights, and an alien race from another dimension. In a secondary story, Crossman's earlier, pre-priest, history is recalled. Macdonald's writing is slick and keeps the pages turning. I am concerned, however, about logic problems. Crossman's opponents are, presumably, not stupid. Yet they fail to take advantage of numerous opportunities to simply kill him and have him out of the way. Then there's the matter of the brass statue. Why did it call itself to Crossman's attention?

A story that postulates the continued secret existance of the long-banned Knights Templar, of the Teutonic Knights, and of assassin nuns can't be all bad and THE APOCALYPSE DOOR isn't. The character of Peter Crossman is nicely drawn and his faith feels genuine. I found his dilemma while taking an assassin/nun's confession to be especially moving.

1 out of 5 stars Seen better horror B movies.......2003-10-07

[EDIT] I now quite belatedly found out that are indeed two books with the exact same title and remotely related themes. Apparently the one I wanted is "The Apocalypse Door" by James D. MacDonald, as opposed to this inferior mess.

I got this book based on a review in the SciFi Weekly website, some time ago. Those recommendation have certainly been hit-and-miss. From fantastic newcomers, such as Ken MacLeod and "Cosmonaut Keep" to ... well, this stinker.

Horror isn't normally my favorite genre anyway, but with above review I expected/hoped for a nice dash of fantasy or even scifi influence. Alas, what I got was a book that read as predictable as a horror B movie.

Not yet even halfway through the book I uttered The Eight Deadly Words of storytelling: "I don't care what happens to these characters!"

They are cardboard stereotypes, one from column A (the Catholic priest with a taint in his past but Faith Deep Down); one from column B, the good-hearted and decent university prof, a wonderful father to his even more wonderful children, with the career-driven, sleep-her-way-to-the-top, evil TV journalist wife; and column C, the poor abused love-interest-to-be-once-the-divorce-is-through-and-that-pesky-demon-sent-back-to-hell former classmate of column B.

Add a variety of characters whose only purpose is to be gruesomly possessed and murdered by a Demon From Hell. Most of these appeared and died too quickly to be fleshed out to any extent.

There are plotholes big enough to fly all the infernal hosts through. How did the priest make it from Scotland to America, but then end up broke near Boston? If he flew and also thought that his destination was near NY, why didn't he arrive days before the demon, which had to rely on a lumbering freighter crossing the Atlantic? Where the hell was the police? People were being horribly killed, houses blown up in raging infernos and in the 12 or so hours covered by the story, we don't see one cop inquiring whether there might be a slight problem (except One Evil Because Atheist Pig, on one paragraph, rearly on).

Oh yeah, God Himself actually interferes a few times, but it could have just been the author's God From The Machine.

The end was predictable from about halfway through the book. I'd brought the book along on a vacation and hadn't exactly expected Mary Shelley, so my expectations were low, but I struggled to finish this dog.

Just to round it off, the author or his editor need: a spellchecker, an intro to proper grammar (getting your and you're mixed up is an abomination), a Thesaurus (author's 2 favorite words: "macabre" and "golem", over and over), and a Webster's (the author always uses golem as an adjective, which it isn't in my issue of the dictionary).

Yet another "I wish I could give zero stars on Amazon" case.

5 out of 5 stars THE APOCALYPSE DOOR.......2002-12-11

THE BOOK WAS GREAT. ALTHOUGH THERE WERE SOME EDITING ERRORS, IT DIDN'T DETRACT FROM THE STORY OR THE PACE IT SET. IT HAD MORE THAN THE TYPICAL HORROR ELEMENTS IN IT; IT HAD SOME HUMOR, SOME SADNESS, AND SOME LOVE ASPECTS. IT'S THE FIRST BOOK I'VE READ IN A LONG TIME THAT COULD MAKE ME LAUGH AND SCARE THE WITS OUT OF ME WITHIN A TWO PAGE SPAN. I THINK IT'S A MUST READ.

When someone you love dies, Earl Grollman writes, "there is no way to predict how you will feel. The reactions of grief are not like recipes, with given ingredients, and certain results. . . . Grief is universal. At the same time it is extremely personal. Heal in your own way." If someone you know is grieving, Living When a Loved One Has Died can help. Earl Grollman explains what emotions to expect when mourning, what pitfalls to avoid, and how to work through feelings of loss. Suitable for pocket or bedside, this gentle book guides the lonely and suffering as they move through the many facets of grief, begin to heal, and slowly build new lives. "If you're far away when someone you care about is in mourning, send this book--it's the next best thing to being there. And if you doubt whether your being there will do any good, read this book, and you will learn how to become the wise, reassuring, and understanding person a good friend is when a loved one has died." -Minneapolis Star

      5 out of 5 stars Death of a friend..........2007-10-10

It has been almost a year since my wife died suddenly and unexpectedly. Since then I've spent much time reading and pondering, trying to come to terms with my new reality. This is one of two books I found which provided enough comfort that I've given copies to other newly berieved widows and widowers.

5 out of 5 stars What a book of comfort.......2007-08-16

Those of us grieving will find great comfort here. Please take the time to read this book that can be read in one sitting.
God Bless those of you grieving. This book will help you work thru the process and maybe shed a few tears as I did.

5 out of 5 stars I want to share with all who need........2007-06-10

This little book was recommended to me by a friend. I treasure her sharing with me. I purchased several to hand out to any who may need for this is very uplifting and to the point of how to continue on when"loved One Has Died".....

      5 out of 5 stars Share With a Friend.......2007-01-03

This book was recommended from someone who had shared it with a friend who had recently lost his wife. This book made such a difference in this person's attitude toward life that I purchased several copies to share with people I care about who lose loved ones.

This is a quick, easy read.

5 out of 5 stars Help in time of great loss...................2003-12-17

This is not for those who are in the first weeks of loss. The honesty of the text can be hard to deal with while the loss is still new. However, when I needed to finally let go after the death of my grandmother in 1996, this book was a trememdous help to me. It was the catalyst that finally got my emotions flowing and helped me to process the grief. I had been walking around in the "grief bubble" for weeks and wanted to cut through the blackness surrounding me. The passages inside were the catalyst I needed to finally get my emotions flowing and process the grief when I lost my grandmother and, later, my father. This is the gift I give to friends when they are ready to move on and step out of the shadow of loss.

5 out of 5 stars Sound advice in sorrow.............2001-01-31

I found this book in the library shortly after my husband died. For me it was a God-send. It offered a frank perspective of how I was feeling and that I was, and would be okay. There was something in this book for everyone...relatives, friends. It let me know that I was not the only one who was grieving. It explained how others felt and shared in my loss. Whenever I know someone has lost a loved one, it's the first thing I share...telling all how it helped me. I've given copies of the book to friends....suggest that churches, bereavevement groups provide to those in need. This book was a life-saver!

      5 out of 5 stars Gentle Guidance.......2000-02-03

I recommend this book highly. The advice is gentle and sound. No preaching. Those who are non-religious and those who are will find it helpful. Each stage of grief is explained. It would be excellent for anyone helping a friend or family member through this process.

5 out of 5 stars Another great book in the Hot Books series.......2004-12-05

The cookbooks from the hot books series all get the most use of any of the cookbooks in our household because the recipes are excellent. Of the hot books series (we have them all), this one gets the most use. I have given this book as a gift several times and highly recommend it. The photos are beautiful and the ingredients used (which are almost always fresh ingredients) offer wonderful and complex flavors that our family loves. Buy this book if you don't mind prepping fresh ingredients (such as using fresh tomatoes for tomato sauce and stripping fresh cilantro for pasta chinese). This book isn't for the kitchen that relies heavily on can openers!

4 out of 5 stars An adventurous approach to pasta.......2004-08-13

Following 1995's "Hot Chicken," the authors breathe new life into pasta with boldly flavored (not, despite the title, necessarily fiery) fusion techniques and stunning photos (by Sandison).

Each recipe is organized from advance preparation through final cooking steps and suggested accompaniments. Because of this timed approach, it's best to read carefully all the way through.

Dishes include Pasta with Olives, Tomatoes and Artichokes; Southwest Pasta With Grilled Vegetables; California Lo Mein; Thai Primavera with Coconut chiles and Lime; Panfried Pasta with Clams; Southwest Lamb Lasagna; Mediterranean Pasta with Seared Tuna.

There are chapters on vegetarian pastas, Asian dishes, cream sauces, and seafood. And tips on pasta cooking, buying, and reheating. Spaghetti night may never be the same!

                  5 out of 5 stars Great !.......2001-05-22

This book, and the others by Carpenter- Fusion, Hot Wok and Hot Chicken, are the most underrated cookbooks in the field. These are creative, innovative, workable recipes, and nearly everyone is great. He is much better than some of the star chefs.

5 out of 5 stars excellent quick meals.......1999-10-16

This book is great even if you don't love pasta. It really focuses on quick meals that are cheap and full of flavor. You may have to stock up on a few things at first, but after that this is one of the best books I've seen for those "I just got home from work, I'm starving, and I can't afford to go out" nights.

5 out of 5 stars TAKES PASTA DISHES TO A NEW LEVEL.......1999-05-18

If you are a pasta lover, this book is a must! As with other Hugh Carpenter books, it is the unique and unusual combination of flavors which set it apart. Also the food photos by Teri Sandison are beautiful and give new meaning to the idea of presentation. This is one of a series of "HOT" books and they are all great.
