Book Description
In the worlds of passion and politics, Ursula Blanchard knows to follow her heart -- if she is to keep her head....
Happily married and enjoying the life domestic, Ursula has her mind on family matters, not court treachery, as she begins to plan a betrothal for her young daughter Meg. When the powerful Duke of Norfolk extends an invitation for Ursula and her family to travel to London to meet Edmund Dean, a potential suitor, Ursula's hopes are quickly dashed: there is something in Dean's eyes that Ursula distrusts. Furthermore, she has also stumbled upon a rapidly accelerating plot closing in on her dear half-sister, Queen Elizabeth I, whom she is sworn to protect. When murder strikes the Duke's household, and a ciphered correspondence hints at the return of the deposed Mary, Queen of Scots, it's up to Ursula to keep the intrigue under wraps while racing to preserve the Queen's life. With Meg quickly falling in love with the wrong man, Ursula must walk a knife's edge to save her innocent daughter...and an unknowing throne.

Intrigue abounds.......2006-02-17
This is the 8th book in the Ursula Blanchard series, which I have been reading since it began.
In this story, Ursula begins to plan a betrothal for her daughter, Meg. The suitor in question is a secretary of the Duke of Norfolk's, and the Duke himself has proposed the match. Ursula and her husband accept the invitation to travel to London, so they can scout out their prospective son in law to see if he is right for Meg.
Together with Fran and Roger Brockley, Gladys Morgan, Sybil Jester, and of course, Meg, they arrive in London and soon meet Edmund Dean, the suitor in question. Ursula takes an immediate dislike to him, but is not quite able to put her finger on just why. Meg, on the other hand, is smitten and is eager for the betrothal to take place, even though she is only 13. Ursula tries to gently discourage her daughter from pursuing Dean, citing that as of yet, she is still too young to consider marriage and she would prefer that Meg wait until she was 17. Nonetheless, Meg's attachment to Dean grows, and she sneaks off to spend time with him whenever she can.
Amidst of all this, the Duke tells Ursula of a private correspondence he has been having with Mary, Queen of Scots, who is currently deposed. The Duke is obviously in love with Mary, although they have never met, and he harbors hope of one day marrying her and becoming her consort. Norfolk is very outspoken in regards to his feelings, not realizing that Ursula does espionage for Queen Elizabeth and Sir William Cecil.
Then, murder strikes the household, and a courier who had been carrying the Duke's correspondence is the victim. Along with the Duke's letter to Mary, there was also a letter from an Italian banker, Roberto Ridolphi, as well as a letter in cipher, which hints at a plot to bring the Scots queen back to her throne.
Despite wanting to stay out of such things as court intrigue, Ursula is inexorably drawn into the mix yet again. She feels honor bound to Elizabeth and Cecil and can't in good conscience let what news she has learned go unshared. Therefore, Ursula becomes embroiled in trying to unravel this latest caper, while at the same time, trying to control her headstrong daughter.
And so, Ursula ends up staying in London as a guest of Ridolphi's, under the pretext of helping his wife become better accustomed to England, while teaching her the language. Ridolphi is a friend of Norfolk's, and a fellow conspirator in the plot to reinstate Mary.
To make matters worse, Ursula's willful charge, Gladys Morgan, wreaks havoc everywhere she goes. Gladys gets into fights with other servants, the town vicar, a gardener; everyone. And when she gets angry, she curses whomever she is angry with and wishes them ill. This eventually catches up with Gladys in an unpleasant manner, when she is accused of witchcraft yet again and is in danger of losing her life.
This book was good, even though I could figure out parts of it. If you've read the series, you know of Ursula's 2nd marriage to Matthew De La Roche. In this book, you learn more about him, when Ursula unwittingly uncovers information that could drastically affect her life. Sorry to be cryptic, but I won't give everything away!
Also in this book, Gladys has a shot at romance, with the topiary gardener, who is as old and ugly as she. It seems he likes to clip the hedges into rather suggestive looking shapes, much to the ire of Ridolphi, one of his employers. But, Gladys and he strike up a pseudo-relationship and bicker like a pair of children.
Like all Fiona Buckley novels, this one is full of its red herrings, and will keep you interested as you try to solve the crime along with Ursula.
A Not So Historical Novel.......2005-06-16
Actually the tie-in to actual history is quite good, this period is something of a passion of mine and I haven't caught the author in a historical mistake yet. I particularly enjoy her characterization of Elizabeth I.
On the other hand however her period detail is simply awful. The Duke of Norfolk's household is Victorian rather than Elizabethan. A nobleman would not have a housekeeper but a Steward for example and the servants would not eat in the kitchen but in hall. The use of first names by all and sundry is irritating, in those days a lady would call even her husband 'Master Stannard', and a man-servant would not be called 'Master Brockley'.
Ursula herself is far too Nineties in her sensibility, especially in her attitude towards religion. Interesting as the mysteries are I simply cannot cope with the anachronisms.
Riveting Historical Fiction.......2004-12-31
Fiona Buckley has written another winning entry in the Ursula Blanchard series. The series takes place during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Ursula is the illegitimate half-sister of the Queen and has many times been in the middle of Court intrigue. At the start of the novel, Ursula is finally able to enjoy a more sedate life with her marriage to Hugh Stannard.. Her daughter, Meg, is soon fourteen and marriageable age. The Duke of Norfolk invite the Stannards to visit him and meet his secretary as a possible suitor for Meg. From almost the moment of arrival, Ursula's quiet life is over. Men are dying under mysterious circumstances, her host may be in on a plot to overthrow the Queen, and her old retainer is in jeopardy of being accused of witchcraft.
Both primary and secondary characters are vivid, compelling, and memorable. The plot is well paced and engrossing. It beautifully entwined historical fact with fiction. A must read if you like your detective fiction with a historical twist.
extraordinary historical mystery.......2004-11-01
The Duke of Norfolk is attempting to matchmake his secretary Edmund Dean with Ursula Blanchard's daughter Meg. While Ursula isn't crazy about the idea, but she, her husband and their servants head to London to get their servant Gladys away from the villagers before she is declared a witch. While at Norfolk's home Ursula realizes that the man wants to marry Mary, former queen of Scots both for love and political power if she can win back the Scottish throne.
Two men involved in Norfolk's home are murdered and Ursula believes it has something to do with putting Mary on the Scottish throne and making her Elizabeth's heir. Sir Cecil has Ursula go to the banker Roberto Rodolfo's house to act as a companion to his wife. Rodolfo is the middleman between Norfolk and the Spanish Ambassador. While Ursula is spying she comes across encrypted papers involving a plot to put Mary on Elizabeth's throne after Elizabeth is killed. Sir Cecil uses Ursula to defuse the situation before the lords in the north make war on their sovereign by taking Norfolk and Leicester out of the equation.
Fiona Buckley weaves historical facts so seamlessly into her storyline that readers will find they are reading an extraordinary historical mystery. It comes as no surprise that the heroine makes a very good spy and her loyalty is to Elizabeth I, her queen and her half-sister. Although Mary Queen of Scotts is not present in THE SIREN QUEEN, plots and counter plots revolve around her and influence the course of politics during Elizabeth's reign. Fans of Sharon Kay Perman and Roberta Gellis are going to be very happy reading this fine work.

One Of My Newest Favorite Books.......2005-07-18
I absolutely loved reading this book! From the very first page, I was hooked! S. William Foley is an amazing writer that knows how to draw in an audience and make them feel as though they are a part of the story. I am a huge fan of mystery and horror stories, but the nice mix of different story genres in this book was pleasing to read. Anyone that loves short stories or just wants to read something fresh that will keep you hooked, should read The Imagination's Provocation. I look forward to reading S. William Foley's new novel, Souls Triumphant! Keep up the good work!
Short Story Thriller.......2005-04-06
What a roller coaster ride! Each chapter held a different genre that pulled you in. Like a ride where you can't wait to get to the end, yet after you finished, you realize how much you enjoyed it!
It will be exciting to see what this author has in store for us in the future!
Short Story Sampler.......2005-03-17
This offering of short stories by a new author shows promise. Snippets of family relationships are explored, and glimpses of murder, mystery, sci-fi and the supernatural are visited in this eclectic collection. I look forward to a full-length novel that combines the author's keen sense of poetic justice in the form of an eerie tale. Will appeal to Y.A.'s and adults.
Enlightening and Intriguing.......2005-02-19
If this collection is an accurate indicator, S. William Foley is bound to become a household name. These stories will enlighten literature classes, book clubs, and fiction buffs alike. Foley's amazingly developed characters and sophisticated, realistic style will draw you in to his intriguing plots. I'm anxious to see what is next for S. William Foley.
Great collection!.......2005-02-11
If you are into sci-fi, humor, fantasy, or any genre then this is the book for you. Fresh, witty and thought provoking. Pick it up and give it a try.

Customer Reviews:
This program plus microdermx worked.......2007-03-10
I used to have acne scars, zits and skin that was showing signs of aging. I used the perricone program for a while and did like have some positive results. But then after hearing about Microdermx on beauty forums, I tried it and the Microdermx has completely changed my bad skin into skin that I looks beautiful to me. I have about 85% less acne scars, no acne, and my skin is firmer with a glow. The price is better too than say Dr. Brandts.
His skin products don't work. His diet isn't new (and imperfect).......2006-08-10
It hasn't been clinically proven that Perricone skin products work. My mom (age 46) tried them anyway, and they didn't work.
His advice to stay away from grains (and whatever comes from them, of course) is great, but not new. Yes, farm-raised salmon is screwed up, eat the wild one, but again, I knew that already.
And I disagree with his complicated "system" of taking supplements. If you just eat normal food, like vegetables and fruit, NOT grains and soda, you won't need supplements. The only supplement you need is fish oil, since farm-raised animals that we eat lack necessary fatty acids.
Great book! But get the supplements for less..........2006-04-17
I think the biggest complaint or criticism of Dr. Perricone's recommendations is the excessive cost of supplements and creams. With regard to the supplements, Dr. Perricone gives recommendations on the vitamins and supplements you should take. I spent some time looking at all the ingredients listed and realized that you can get those same supplements, vitamins, and minerals at your local health food / vitamin store (GNC carries a lot of them (get DMAE here) and so does Trader Joe's (you can get the Complete EFA (essential fatty acids), Alpha Lipoic Acid, but does not have DMAE), and Costco (good price for CoEnzyme Q10)! The prices are much more reasonable. (In fact, on the nvperricone website, the vitamin packets list all the ingredients and the amount of product included in the packets. In his book, he makes dosage recommendations too.) I hope this helps.
Ignore the weird-looking girl on the cover and read this book!.......2006-01-30
This book has some really sound advice in it. I followed most of the suggestions (only I just incorporated the advice into my current eating patterns, I did not follow the diet mentioned in the book), such as: eating good fats and protein with meals, taking a good multi-vitamin. I did not buy any of the expensive skin care products mentioned in the book, and I have seen good results.
Sound Advice, Good At-Home Prescriptions.......2005-10-07
Whether you are trying to maintain already great skin or wanting to improve the complexion you have now, this book offers terrific advice and some excellent dietary and supplemental programs. Dr. Perricone's opinion that aging is a disease like any other (and therefore treatable) is novel and not without some supporting evidence. His suggestions on starting young to keep your skin well-toned are invaluable. I read this book end to end and didn't find anything to really object to and there was a lot here that merits serious attention. This is a good program for maximizing what nature gave you and bettering it through all natural, non-cosmetic remedies. Whereas the typical American response to skin care has been "clean and cover" this shows it is possible to build a healthy foundation from within. The best book in this field on the market today.

"I have always considered desserts to be of equal importance to the savory food," Charlie Trotter writes in the opening pages of his lavish Charlie Trotter's Desserts. "My approach to desserts celebrates a fruit-driven style, where flash and visual pyrotechniques [sic] are shunned in favor of celebrating the glorious flavors of a perfectly ripe piece of fruit at the height of its season." The illustrations for this book (which won the James Beard award for Best Food Photography) don't quite square up with that statement. It's hard to imagine more pyrotechnics and more visual flash. It's also a little hard to imagine how many hands went into the creation of any single dish. These are not simple desserts for the everyday cook. Rather, this is a catalog of the kinds of desserts that can be created when fabulous food products and fantastic culinary talents all converge at a single kitchen. It's a coffee-table document of possibility.
Two Watermelon Soups with Frozen Yogurt Soufflé and Chocolate Seeds is certainly a "doable" recipe for the home cook, and the assembly makes no big demands. The real trick with this dessert, as with most of the desserts in this book, is finding the "perfectly ripe piece of fruit at the height of its season." If you are a cook with access to such fruit, have at it. If your grocery store or supermarket buys the usual picked green fruit found in the commercial fruit pipeline, then take a copy of this book to your produce manager and complain loudly.
Charlie Trotter's Desserts is divided into Soups and Sorbets, Citrus Fruits, Berries, Tropical Fruits, Tree Fruits, Vegetables and Grains, Custards, Nuts, Spices, Chocolate, and Chateau d'Yquem. Combinations are stunning. Surprises are endless. You'll discover such delights as Meyer Lemon Pudding Cakes with Persimmon and Tarragon Anglaise, Pineapple Tarte Tatin with Ginger-Hokkaido Squash Ice Cream, Rosewater Crème Caramel with Primrose Sauce and Black Pepper Tuiles, and Macadamia Nut Chocolate Cakes with Coconut Emulsion and Sugarcane Ice Cream. After living with this book you'll never look at a dessert menu in quite the same way. --Schuyler Ingle

Great photos--flawed recipes.......2007-09-10
My husband is a chef, I cook and bake often, and was even a personal chef. We've tried two of these recipes so far and neither have worked! One of them was completely off in the dough and couldn't possibly have worked and the other we are still working on. It's for a portion of a recipe that has toffee. We have resorted to finding another toffee recipe online and will try to make that and incorporate it in the recipe. It is very disappointing! I've tried this portion 3 times now with no luck. Thats just not right. Buy this book only for the photos and try to make them by using other recipes that you know and trust or use a reputable site with user reviews. We've ate at Trotters and it was good, but we've both had better meals for less money.
inspirational desserts.......2006-11-30
Some cookbooks are meant as much for inspiration as they are for actual cooking...moreover, some cookbooks aren't for the normal home cook. I was a pastry chef and made some of these recipes. In that context, it is an excellent book, and probably my favorite of the Trotter lineup. Really, these were his pastry chef's recipes, so perhaps that says something about my impressions of his food.
An experienced homecook could make these recipes as well, but please know going in, that if you are not somewhat skilled in the pastry arts, you might find the book frustrating (but beautiful).
Useful only for photos & inspiration.......2004-11-21
I can say that I am a reasonably competent home chef with an above-average knowledge of technique and most necessary equipment to get the job done. Having said that, I was impressed with the photos of nearly every featured recipe in this book and find the recipes to be admirably aggressive in their taste and texture contrasts. The recipes, however, are nearly all flawed in some significant manner in that following them verbatim will result in poor results. Even when this is not the case, I find these recipes to be "out of whack" from a taste perspective by any gastronome's standards and in need of serious tweaking. If you have good kitchen skills and seek to be inspired by the ideas in this book, then I would suggest it (USED!!) ... otherwise, there are much better cookbooks that will yield far superior results.
Really, what is the point here?.......2004-05-21
Get serious people, there is no way in a million years that most of us would ever successfully assemble one of these over-the-top recipes presented in this book. The extravagence displayed here is totally off the deep end, and is beyond the means or talents of most cooks, so why market this cookbook in the first place? Only other professional chefs would be capable of pulling it off, but they are also capable of making up their own fabulous recipes without Charlie Trotter's help.
Supposedly, we are to "draw inspiration" from these recipes. What a load of crap. I could take a second-year violin student, throw the sheet music for Paganini's 24 Caprices at him, and tell him to draw inspiration from the music, even if he couldn't hope ever to play it. What is the point of that, other than to frustrate a person?
This is nothing more than ridiculous self-indulgence on the part of another celebrity chef who apparently doesn't give a damn about we lesser beings who are simply trying to put a nice meal on the table.
excellent ideas and photos, but not for the practical chef.......2003-11-07
charlie trotter creates some of the finest courses i've ever seen. the only problem with this is, nothing contained within this series of books is even remotely practical or feasible from the home kitchen. the ingredients he uses are sometimes impossible to find (even when ordering through a professional kitchen), and the equiptment required for them aren't usually owned by the common cook. so, if you're serious about trying to create an award winning entree or desert, and have the time, patience, equiptment, and endless exotic produce, this book is perfect for you. the rest of us will just have to admire the pictures.

wild sweets.......2007-04-07
Very avant-garde in flavor combinations. Crossing the border on what ingredients are "sweet" and "savory", stunning photography, extremely useful wine pairings and general information on some raw basic ingredients. Nice layout/format and easily readable font. Useful base recipes are a nice addition to any professional's repetoire. Highly recommended.
Fantastic purchase.......2006-11-10
Wonderful book. Very interesting combinations of flavors on the desserts and great choices for the wines.
Try the grilled pear with polenta frites and orange-tarragon sauce. It's umbelievable.
I just don't know why they didn't use hardcover.

A Canadian chef-in-training.......2004-06-14
Excellent book. A good addition to any chef-in-training's repitior of cookbooks. I keep this book around as a reference for design plating inspirations and to expose my growing vocabulary of exotic ingredients.
Its also nice to see a Canadian authoring such books of high skill level amongst the more simpler books (ie Canadian Living). The Dubey's are masters in their fields, chocolate, and I had the honor of meeting them during a demonstrations.
This book comes highly recommended by a student of the arts.
